Big news. Xabi Alonso staying at current club. Clearly waiting for Real Madrid when Carlo leaves. Liverpool now looking at another manager.

No point anyone posting about it anymore. He's not coming.

Uli Hoeness saying it's "probably impossible" for Bayern to get him too.

 1

28 Mar 2024 22:22:45
Happy with that especially if that’s what he wants.
Totally ok with Amorim. Personally think he is at least the equal of Alonso but preferred Alonso because of the connection to us.
Well, nothing is confirmed so just looking forward to whoever really.

I'm here for the Victor meltdown!

28 Mar 2024 22:43:37
First i've heard of it, but if true, is anyone really surprised? He's a Spaniard, and most Spanish managers would dream to manage Real Madrid. You would think one would buck the trend and move to a "peoples" team in Spain, and not one bankrolled by the Spanish elite. But hey ho. His loss, as Liverpool is still the greatest club in the world.

 0

28 Mar 2024 22:51:34
Madrid is the club he’s waiting for 100%.

 0

28 Mar 2024 22:52:17
Has this actually been confirmed or is it just from what Hoeness has said? The bbc are leading with an LFC headline but literally the only quote is from Hoeness, which isn't exactly reliable.

28 Mar 2024 21:31:41
Joyce saying that Xabi is a no-go.
His knowledge of and love for L4 and the reds would have made the transition smoother.

This feels like quite a big blow.

 1

28 Mar 2024 22:23:29
I’m sure people are going to feel hurt by this if it’s true. But people do need to move on from this idea that there is one saviour.

 0

28 Mar 2024 21:21:45
As I understand Paul Joyce isn't so close to the club anymore, but he's just posted this.

Liverpool latest: Xabi Alonso now unlikely to feature on final shortlist to replace Jurgen Klopp.

ED2.sorry if you have answered it already but which positions Liverpool will be looking to strengthen in summer. Thanks.

 0

{Ed002's Note - A GK, perhaps 2, perhaps a LB, a CB, a versatile DM/CM, a RW and perhaps a versatile F depending on departures.}

28 Mar 2024 10:11:11
Hi Mr Ed002

Are there any goalkeepers we are tracking or you think would be a good option for the number 2/ 3? Assuming Allison is staying :)

Perhaps Vitezslav Jaros can replace Caoimhin Kelleher, if he leaves.

Also, I saw mention of Maximilian Beier a while ago. Looks like a good player. Is he on the list for the versatile forward?

Much thanks as ever!

 0

{Ed002's Note - The situation with the goalkeepers is perhaps something like this:
Marcelo Pitaluga (G) Needs to consider his future or bide his time at Liverpool.
CaoimhĂn Kelleher (G) Decision time for the player and Wolves may try to tempt him after some scouting. Celtic have spoken with his representative.
Vitezslav Jaros (G) Having a good loan at Sturm Graz and perhaps an option to take over as number two but he may want more game time.
Adrian (G) Out of contract in the summer and will depart.

Maximilian Beier (S/F) Opted for a contract extension at Hoffenheim over a move to Brentford after a loan at Hannover. Seen as a potential Hlozek replacement for Bayer Leverkusen or a Sesko Replacement for RBL. Everton, Liverpool and Luton have sent scouts to watch the player. May be available in the summer.

 4

28 Mar 2024 11:21:46
I can't believe there are not more of the 'top tier' clubs sniffing around Kelleher. In Alissons absence, he has been excellent and whilst certainly not the best in the world, he would be an excellent No 1 for most top clubs.

 9

28 Mar 2024 11:23:55
Potentially a lot more activity than we expect it seems, especially given the team is doing well and the kids are doing a brilliant job of providing quality depth. Of those positions Ed mentions, a Matip replacement has to be the priority.

We have essentially replaced Thiago already with MacAllister imo. Endo is doing remarkably well and the question there is whether he can physically deliver another season to give Bajcetic time to build himself up for the rigours of the Premier League.

The rest depends on the players who have decisions to make ie Kelleher, Tsimikas, Salah (yikes) and Diaz (if the constant rumours are anything to go by) .

Ugh, a summer window I am the least excited by regardless of the incomings because it will be without a certain German fella at the helm. Not ready!

 4

28 Mar 2024 13:39:56
Maybe kelleher doesn’t want to leave so that’s why no one trying for him?

 0

28 Mar 2024 14:10:28
Agree with Stuie. Kelleher has taken a step up this year and I think LFC would be foolish to let him move on. Alisson is obviously incredible and one of the best, but will be 32 next year and has had a couple longer stretches being out with injury in recent years. If LFC didn't have Kelleher, they would likely be looking for someone like Kelleher to support Alisson. I guess my concern is that the timing isn't right by about a year or two. Kelleher obviously wants to be first choice somewhere right now and his minutes at LFC are dependent on Alisson's health. I don't really see a good situation where they could share minutes because I think that isn't great for either keeper's form. Form is dependent on regular minutes. It will be interesting to see how/ if this develops more.

 1

28 Mar 2024 14:59:50
If Kelleher is happy to stay then we are golden.

Alternatively, if he leaves and Pitaluga continues to live up to the earlier hype about him, I would move him to No2 behind Alisson and look to an experienced goalkeeper in the Adrian mould to come in as No2/ 3 (when Pitaluga is ready for No2 he takes that spot) .

Ed002, is Ron Robert Zieler a possibility still? I know he was mooted last year when Kelleher may have left, and he has the advantage of being HG given the time he spent at Man Utd in his early years.

 2

{Ed002's Note - Kelleher is at a decision point - move and play or stay on the bench at Liverpool. Marcelo Pitaluga needs to consider his future or bide his time at Liverpool. Struggling in the League of Ireland.

Ron Robert Zieler (G) 35 and out of contract in the summer - Home Grown is likely now the only advantage for English sides.}

 1

28 Mar 2024 15:23:08
I remember when Ron Robert Zieler was a supposed “wonder kid”. Gosh this makes me feel old.

 2

28 Mar 2024 15:29:05
I think somewhere like Wolves (or that level) would be perfect for Kelleher.
A top tier club might just be out of reach for him considering he was only 2nd choice here and would probably be seen as slightly under tested to be number 1 at another top club. He’s stepped up when needed and we rate him but it’s still a bit of a risk id say.
It would be nice if he does well at wolves or somewhere for a season or two before going to a top tier club to be number 1, maybe even back here? Who knows.
I do think he needs to move on though for his career.

 0

28 Mar 2024 16:05:59
Ed, is there no possibility of the club doing a long term loan, similar to what happened with Courtois? It gets him the first choice minutes and also allows time for the changeover when alisson moves on or retires.

 1

{Ed002's Note - I don’t see that being considered at all.}

 0

28 Mar 2024 16:27:24
What about Harvey Davies Ed002? Seems to be doing alright at Crewe.

 0

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any interest from Liverpool.}

 0

28 Mar 2024 17:11:32
I thought we might go for Grabara since hed be home grown and club developed but he's moving to Wolfsburg. Would that potentially make Casteels available? Backup keeper probably the hardest position to convince someone half decent to sign as.

 0

{Ed002's Note - Tge club has no interest in all of these random players.}

 0

28 Mar 2024 20:58:57
The top tier clubs already have top keepers.

 0

27 Mar 2024 09:00:06
Morning Ed’s and fellow reds
 with potentially another injury to Robbo. Do we think it’s time to move on one if not two left backs and freshen up the area. And have we been looking or scouting anyone in particular? Obv if Xabi comes in Grimaldo would be first choice but is there anyone else we’ve been putting through the tests? Ta.

 2

{Ed002's Note - There has not been serious interest shown in LBs but Grimaldo will not be joining.}

 4

27 Mar 2024 10:28:33
I expect Luke Chambers will get the opportunity to impress in pre-season. He seems to be doing well on loan at Wigan.

Do people think he has Conor Bradley potential?

 0

{Ed001's Note - no. Bradley is special.}

 13

27 Mar 2024 10:47:14
Agree Ed001. His goal for NI yesterday was terrific.

I don't want to put pressure on the lad but there's a Stevie G vib about him. He too started out at RB from what I remember.

 1

{Ed001's Note - totally different thing, Gerrard was always a midfielder who just filled in at right-back.}

 8

27 Mar 2024 13:07:43
Bradley played further forward for NI yesterday. Took his goal really well, he doesn’t shirk out of challenges. this boy. He certainly isn’t Gerrard but there are similarities in his size, his body shape with a young Gerrard, he’s not afraid to shoot as we have seen already for LFC. I could certainly see him playing in midfield as long as he progresses on the right lines.

 2

{Ed025's Note - i dont get the obsession with wanting to change players into different positions Irish, Trent and now Bradley are doing well where they are mate and there is nothing wrong with the midfield so i just dont get it myself..

 19

27 Mar 2024 14:12:31
Ed025 if we find a terrific right back they suddenly have to play midfield instead of keeping brilliant players in alternative positions.

 2

{Ed025's Note - it seems that way MIZER, i just hope Alisson doesn,t start spraying balls around in training mate.. :)

 5

27 Mar 2024 14:14:47
Why was Robbo playing in a friendly knowing what is at stake with LFC or why did he just play 20 mins.

 2

27 Mar 2024 17:43:24
Strangely enough Mizer most people would say we have had a great RB in Trent who you seem to criticise on every given occasion.

 3

27 Mar 2024 19:09:52
Big summer for Chambers though, might not be a bradley but is a very good young player in his own right.

 1

27 Mar 2024 20:41:56
@Iwill because the Scottish manager wanted hi to play, because Robbo wanted to captain / play for his country and because neither of them, or you, or me couldn’t know that he was going to be injured. Unlike us not everybody thinks that LFC is the be all or end all.

 3

27 Mar 2024 20:58:54
Chambers looked a mile off it from what I seen of him this season in his few games for 1st team.
That's not to say he won't improve and make it with us, by all accounts he v highly rated but he will definitely need to show a massive improvement.

 2

27 Mar 2024 21:20:15
Trent was also always a midfielder. Only difference is he's been filling in at RB for a few years now.

 2

27 Mar 2024 22:17:12
Nearly 8 years West, and he only played midfield up to u18's. a huge ask to even expect him to get a game for us. Whos place woUld he take in our side? and that's before we buy any more midfielders this summer.

 0

28 Mar 2024 00:00:54
Owen Beck might be ahead of Luke Chambers. Did well on loan at Dundee!

Actually, it is quite possible the LB role will change with a new coach preferring a LCB/ LWB combination.

Inacio/ Hincapie for LCB and Ait-Nouri for LWB have been mentioned a few times as options.

 0

28 Mar 2024 00:02:29
Given we employ an inverted RB, whoever plays there needs to be comfortable in midfield as well. Not too many players have the skillset for the position.

Trent's such a good passer. Personally I would unshackle him from RB duties and concentrate on being a play maker.

 1

28 Mar 2024 01:10:18
That's why I think we have to many midfielders Nkunku. TBH I'm not sure I would drop Bradley for Trent purely with the RB position in mind. Not saying he's not a good RB, he's proven he is. But in my humble opinion, even with how good he's been, he could do so much better in midfield. His talent is such that I think it would be a travesty to not try. I'v said it hundreds of times but I think he should be on the right of the midfield 3. He can dictate the game more, still get wide and cross the ball, let Connor go wide past him and Trent can cover etc. Whether it happens or not I'm dying on this hill.

 3

28 Mar 2024 06:41:43
Agree with nearly all that West, i love trent and he is supremely talented. but the reality is that all we've seen of trent in the middle so far is as a FREE man, how would he do without that luxury? would teams target him? would he be better than dom, curtis or harvey? id love him to be brilliant there i just have my doubts.

 0

28 Mar 2024 08:45:04
West derby if you run on to a football pitch, fella there is a 50/ 50 chance you will get injured and who pays robbos wages, scotland or Liverpool. listen i am of scots decent, but i would still of wanted robbo on the bench and only come on if needed mate.

Ed002,
Just wondering if you know of any updates on the manager search over the last few weeks?
Thanks!

 1

{Ed002's Note - The situation remains largely the same as I understand. Alonso remains first choice but there is interest from Bayern Munich which might be more attractive and asuming he wins the league, then I think it will be tough for him to lead som he has the option to stay and wait for the Real Madrid job. Manchester United may offer Amorin an option - another option may be Liverpool, but not first choice - but I think they will move for him if Alonso does not join. If needs force the situation and given the likely link between the club and Sporting, Chelsea may start pushing. Then of course Roberto de Zerbi. Brighton would fight to keep him but another who will certainly be discussed by Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester United with Jim Ratcliffe having an interest in him. A significant issue exists in the cost of Brighton releasing him. Deco has de Zerbi as his preferred option which he has shared with Yuste and Laporte but it will not be Deco's decision. Not top of Chelsea's list, but on the list.}

Top class knowledge Ed, as always, thanks!

May I Ask,
Where do you get all your reliable info and contacts. Were you a scout?

 5

{Ed002's Note - No I was never a scout Joey.}

 5

25 Mar 2024 17:38:36
Dib dib.

25 Mar 2024 17:02:32
Hi Ed02. Just come back to this site. Are you able to say who would likely cost us the most to sign one of 3 managers suggested? I'm reading all of them have high release clauses?

 1

{Ed002's Note - Alonso would cost the most but there is no termination clause that is relevant this summer - Leverkusen will ask for €30M and accept €25M.}

 3

26 Mar 2024 00:01:42
Thanks for the post, Ed. Sorry to bother you, but one question: when you say "another option may be Liverpool, but not first choice, " do you mean that Liverpool isn't Amorim's first choice or he isn't ours? I'd hate to see any promising manager go to United, let alone one I'd like to have here!

Also, who in their right mind would want to manage Chelsea in their current shape?

 0

{Ed002's Note - Alonso is first choice for Liverpool. There is plenty of interest in Amorim.}

 3

26 Mar 2024 09:49:10
Curious to know why Bayern would be more attractive than Liverpool to Alonso, or any other ambitious young coach? The club, the stadium, the current playing squad, the training facilities and the academy are all in great shape for any new coaching team to inherit. Other than being enamoured with Bavarian lifestyle, is there really much difference between the two?

 1

{Ed002's Note - Bayern Munich have an astonishing stadium and a junior and youth set up which has been hugely successful. They have a scouting network in Bavaria that is exceptional and a world-wide scouting network that only perhaps three sides have bettered. They have a work ethic that runs through the club. Their recruitment process is far better than most. Liverpool's summer recruitment may be over-influenced by the departing manager which will be a concern to any new manager.}

 14

26 Mar 2024 10:51:58
Thanks, Ed. Interesting perspective. Out of interest, where do you think Liverpool ranks in the world-wide scouting network league?

I am surprised to hear that Klopp may have influence on this summer's business. I had naively thought with Edwards plugging back into the existing Spearman/ Fallows/ Hunter machinery, it would be able to operate without too much of Klopp's input, other than gathering his feedback on existing playing staff.

 2

{Ed002's Note - OKish but they focus on England and Wales with perhaps 10 in place then one for Ireland and Scotland. In Europe there are four perhaps and I think now three covering Argentina and Brazil. They have taken back Sven Dworaczek recently to cover just Germany - which is a good thing. Some are ex-players and Liverpool, like many clubs use specialist scouts as needed. All of this comes under Dave Fallows and Barry Hunter.

In terms of Klopp, Hunter and Fallows will have been involved in all of the discussions about players with Klopp and the scouts - so that list remains valid. Edwards will not be in a position to change that. An early decision on a new manager/coach may be one thing that will change that - but right now the likes of Leroy Sane are still on the list of potential targets - and Sane will be available with a bit of a clear out coming in Munich.}

26 Mar 2024 12:54:26
Cheers Ed. Very interesting.

26 Mar 2024 13:44:53
Great questions Former flypelican and unreal info in the answers from Ed002. That was very very interesting reading.

Thanks to you both.

26 Mar 2024 16:31:48
Whilst Bayern might have a good stadium ( and I have been to the Alliance to watch Liverpool v Bayern ) the redevelopment at Anfield isn’t far off, especially when it comes to hospitality in the main stand. And whilst they may have a decent scouting network,
Bayern Munich has been known to pilfer top, in-prime talent from Borussia Dortmund over the years
.

For me, a big influence for Alonso would be how settled the family is in Germany, schools etc etc.

 1

26 Mar 2024 17:10:29
Personally I don't see the purpose of conquering Germany with a smaller club in Bayer Leverkusen and then jumping ship to Bayern just to do it all over again. It's like completing a video game on hard mode and then playing again on easy mode.

 15

26 Mar 2024 19:27:25
Xabi Alonso could end up anywhere. Us, Munich or staying at Bayer Leverkusen.

But to me what does he gain exactly by winning the league with Munich. And that’s me removing myself as Liverpool supporter from the equation. I would find it a bizarre career choice, whereas others might see it differently. Each to their own I guess đŸ€·â€â™‚ïž.

 5

26 Mar 2024 19:41:08
If Xabi wins the league this year then the next step for him is Champions League. Id reckon his chances of winning that at Bayern are much better than at Bayer. And he would know German league pretty well by now so that would make the job easier.

 2

26 Mar 2024 20:00:50
It’s why Ed02 is priceless because the information they kindly give us we would never get anywhere else. Thanks Ed02 and your comments are always read with interest by this poster anyway.

 5

26 Mar 2024 23:28:40
I’m surprised Bayern would be seen as more attractive if he wins the league. I would have thought winning it with Leverkusen would be job done in Germany.

 4

27 Mar 2024 03:45:42
read an article today that reckoned that RM are very much front runners. When they extended Ancelotti's contract, it "coincidentally" lined up with when Xabis new contract at Bayer expires. And apparently Bayer renewed Xabis contract when it looked like ancellotti was going to leave RM last year.

 1

27 Mar 2024 18:08:17
I personally think Xabi is going to stay at BL for another season. Play, and experience, Champions league football with them, then see who us available (Real Madrid? ) in the summer. I also think that would be best for him as well. (Not Madrid, but to gain experience)

 3

24 Mar 2024 19:19:57
Edd002 Evan ferguson, have Liverpool any interest atm or any other clubs? Big fan of the lad.

 1

{Ed002's Note - There is no interest from Liverpool but there is from elsewhere but largely dependent on clubs losing preferred options.}

 6

25 Mar 2024 08:46:07
Everyone's waxing lyrical about this chap but I genuinely don't know what they are watching, because every time I watch Brighton he starts on the bench and has 6 goals in 35 appearances.

 5

25 Mar 2024 08:59:51
Didn’t he score a hat trick at the start of the season that had some of the ‘less grounded’ on social media putting him in the £100m bracket?

 3

25 Mar 2024 09:21:25
He's 19 and has all thr right attributes. He's going to be top drawer if he can avoid injuries.

 1

25 Mar 2024 10:27:57
He's 19 and is playing in an average team that's constantly being chopped and changed by someone who, imo, is an average manager. Half his 36 appearances have been off the bench.

That being said, I suspect he won't end up as good as Nunez, so what's the point?

 2

25 Mar 2024 11:30:20
Harry Kane wasn’t tearing up trees at 19 or 20 either and should’ve become the all time prem top scorer. As an isolated stat, 6 in 35 for a mid table team at 19 years old isn’t eye watering, but then isolated stats never give any context either.

 3

25 Mar 2024 19:36:45
I think he is another player that I hear how good he is jet every time I see him he looks bang average like Timo Werner and Caicedo I believed the hype and hope we signed both and am so glad we didn’t.
I really hope we go nowhere near him I would rather have Danns in the squad rather than blowing ÂŁ100+m on another vastly overrated player.

 0

25 Mar 2024 23:43:41
@QV what’s Kane got to do with Ferguson?

On a separate note - “all time” started in August 1992 did it?

 2

26 Mar 2024 11:21:15
West Derby Wanderer - He did say all time Prem, so yeah that did start in 1992. He didn't say all time top flight did he?

 1

26 Mar 2024 11:23:05
Lack of pace could be a problem he is a bit of a lump who would rely on being in the right place at the right time and long distance shooting. Not Liverpool standard just yet but if he can master his movement and build up play ya never know. We currently have the second best striker in the world but a suitable understudy should be looked for. Gakpo is a midfielder end of.

 0

26 Mar 2024 16:19:56
WDW, I mean sure, I was thinking of using the example of a young Gandhi, but then I thought using another striker may be more relevant.

I was pointing out that you don't have to look world class at 19 to become world class a few short years later. I don't think anyone predicted Kane was destined to become the player he has become and therefore, the relevance of Ferguson’s goal record now on what he may or may not become is virtually nil. It’s called a comparison.

As Gunn10 pointed out, I did say all time PREM top scorer so obviously although not 100 percent fool proof, id say its a long enough length of time with a large enough player pool to judge a player’s ability against.
