Ok, ok, I know transfer fees are a thing of the past but Southampton apparently have slapped an asking price of £70m for Van Dijk.

It really is becoming a complete joke. So let's sign him and hope for the best aka Lovren. And don't give me this crap that VVD is better than Lovren. Lovren was probably the best CB in the League the season before we signed him.

I would rather pay a bit extra for Salah than make VVD the most expensive defender ever.

Money has ruined the beautiful game.

{Ed025's Note - money has ruined the game max..

And fans will complain why there are increases in ticket prices. It would lead to making VVD the most expensive CB ever along with polishing his brand new supercar and wages which hardly any fan will see in 20 life times.

Lets sign him anyway and let's then have the daggers out for FSG when they decide to raise ticket prices after signing Keita, VVD, Lacazette, Mendy, Mbappe and every other fan driven fantasy signing.

Maybe FSG are not that bad after all.

Money's made the league more exciting fact. Can't believe anyone will be paying £70mil for vvd though, saints are deluded if that's what they're asking for. Lovren to Everton Ed025 :) . you can have Clyne as well. Swaps with Coleman happy days.

{Ed025's Note - i hope you mean our local solid fuel merchant rather than seamus in that swap reaper....i will give you the number for fred carno mate...hes always looking for clowns mate.. :)

Very greedy indeed. Nobody should not sign him out of principle and set an example! You could get Sanchez for £70m 😉.

Ed25.

Football was ruined as soon as Murdoch got his grubby hands on the game, 1992/ 93 was the death of our fantastic game.

United fans would beg to differ though.

{Ed025's Note - your probably right nicky, i know im a bit of an old codger but i was listening to lee dixon saying how when he walks into the emirates he gets totally ignored by the young gunners who walk past him and dont even acknowledge him even though he is as arsenal stalwart, young kids on loads of dosh who think they are better than having to show respect to him, thats what money has done and its a shame as these are probably the future of the game, sad really mate..

I am too ed25, turned 45 this year!

I'd like to think it's not the same at Anfield. Even though I have a season ticket on the Kop, I quite often get to go to the Carlsberg lounge ( cooperate ) and have sat and had dinner with the likes of Jimmy Case, Fairclough, Phil Neal, Aldo and Alan Kennedy. They are always in and around the club and they often talk about the youngsters etc.

I'm totally old skool mate, grew up watching Merseyside dominating the league.

At least our two teams can say we did it without having to float on the stock exchange ( the red Mancs) or have a sheik pump loads of money into the club in order to achieve success.

If it truly is 70m then we have to walk away.
Only a wage cap and a transfer fee cap could ever stop this escalating madness of spending in football, and we all know that won't happen.
But there are defenders available in europe for around half that fee, who can perform to 80-90% of VVDs level.
The problem is that the super rich clubs like City will simply pay the 70m, or 150m- or whatever it takes to get a player they realy want. And clubs who can't or won't join the mad spending spree will always be second best- barring the odd miracle like Leicester's title win.
If this sport is so money driven that a cb sells for 70m, you do start to ask yourself what it is that we as fans are actually supporting.
Are we supporting a team or filling the pockets of agents and obsecenely overpaid players?
It makes me wonder.
