Official statement from lfc so yeh.

Rumour is lfc dropped interest in vvd due to now knowing who Southampton would sign as a replacement and will buy him instead.

The statement makes it pretty clear there was interest in Van Dijk and also that the club have acted inappropriately. Absolute farce. While I've no doubt that tapping up goes on all the time to get caught is pathetic and shameful. A chance to get a player who would have improved our squad blown. Whoever has been involved should hang their heads in shame and consider where they stand. And that includes the manager and I'm his biggest fan.

How many more times are we going to mess up transfer dealings? Our club is becoming a laughing stock by not being able to abide by the rules. We have lost a quality player in VVD, exactly what we needed! Even more inexcusable as we beat off Chelsea and City for him due to the lad wanting to play for us.

What a bunch of idiots if there really was a breach of regulations. Looks like they'll never learn.

Ha ha, if that is the case then Liverpool are run like a circus.

I think it is fair to say that we are and never were in a position financially to make the VVD deal happen.

Yet fans seem to think spending that kind of money does not matter. It does because it will drown Liverpool financially even further.

Will be extremely disappointed if the tapping up news is true and we will deserve what comes our way from the EPL.

{Ed025's Note - thats very masochistic of you max, ok so they cocked up, they wont be the first or the last mate.. lets move on..

Ffs. What a shambles. We'll go and waste a fortune on rubbish like Keane now. Typical of the shambolic way we conduct our business.

{Ed025's Note - its poor but not the end of the world FMS..

Spot on Kimos.
This continual tapping up of players is making us a complete laughing stock and heads should role. If we are unable to make the marquee signings Klopp wants our transfer window becomes diluted and worst still we end up paying even more for players down our pecking list and diluting our squads quality.
Klopp surely will only be speaking to players on advice from others. If he has done it on his own back then we have to seriously consider those consequences and like you I love te guy! let's wait to see how this plays out.

Got to laugh haven't you.

Get everyone's frustration but there's probably a 100 ways to cross wires and it's probably a misunderstanding somewhere along the lines.

Reset move on and try to repair some reputation by 1. Dealing correctly 2.wrap up deal quietly 3. Hire Southampton scout lol.

There's no need or excuse for it. Someone or some people have seriously f**ked up. It's an embarrassment and you can see other clubs rubbing their hands. Why do it? See how it pans out like you say patemondo but what looked like a promising start to the summer looks like turning into a desperate race to spunk money.

Ed025, we would have never even be willing to pay up even if Soton were willing to listen. We did not even approach them.

We went behind their backs to get the player on our side and then screw Southampton over.

Disgrace.

{Ed025's Note - your guessing there max, it was done to jump the queue and yes it was naive but lets have a bit of perspective..

This isn't simply a case of 'crossed wires' this is somewhere between malpractice and utter incompetence. Don't know about the rest of you but I'm furious at the way we've conducted this, shambles and and we're a joke of a club at the moment. This is right up there with the Suarez nonsense. Btw collective apologies to the Eds too as you will probably be dealing with a lot of really annoyed fans.

For me personally i am gutted if we did do something a bit shady, if we knew we were, rather than a genuine misunderstanding. but i am glad to be honest we are not going to spend that money on a player i don't think is good enough to match the price, even in today's crazy football market costs.

07 Jun 2017 21:13:47
So is this another case of tapping up or genuine crossed wires and club thought by speaking to agent that Southampton were aware. If this is tapping up then anyone involved in this and previous incidents has to go, including Klopp otherwise the club will be incapable if ever signing anyone in future.

Its a real shame to miss out on VVD, but the club's reputation must be damaged by these sorts of blunders.
I can't help wondering whether potential future signings that we approach will tend to doubt the club's credibility in the transfer market.
That said, with a rumoured price tag of over 70m, I wonder which clubs will make offers?
