I’m not saying the szoboszlai transfer won’t happen but if it was going to happen, surely we would be paying the release clause before it expires tomorrow! Why would Leipzig accept anything less once it expires? Unless I’m missing something.

It's not "cheaping out" - it's called negotiating. You try to avoid paying huge amounts up front if you can, because it's better for cash flow, FFP purposes and just general business. I can guarantee Newcastle would be trying to do the same.

We've paid £35m up front for MacA, very few clubs have £100m in petty cash lying around to pay fees in one go. Nearly all clubs pay in instalments of some kind. Even Barcelona did for Coutinho.

FSG don't want us to take on debt, hence not wanting to pay the fee in one go. They're been so strict on this that they even funded our stadium expansion with short term debt, which significantly hurt our cash flow and limited our spending on the market, just to be able to get rid of our debt as soon as possible.

So I'll be surprised to see us fund a transfer this way. If they were this aggressive with real estate, they'll be even more frugal when it comes to funding depreciating assets such as players.
One potential reason that they're so insanely strict is merely to keep us in "perfect condition" for a sale.

If the deal is right RBL might as well lose all these players at once. Ok they’ll have a tough time next season, but what difference will keeping one star player make? Will he be happy propping up a team that has sold so many? Will he be trying to engineer a move?

Essentially it’s a business decision, they will know they’re in for a tough season come what may, so if the money works they will do a deal. If the money doesn’t work they won’t.
I don’t think they’ll turn down a deal because of their ambitions next season.

I don't know intimately, but I imagine a club like RBL would be well placed to replace their stars through their current scouting and acamdey and be back competing in the next 1 - 2 seasons.
