So Stuart Downing goes around telling people that the day he was asked to play left back for us was the worst day of his career (apparently it wasn't the moment he captained his childhood club to relegation, or when he failed to help them get promoted, or when he lost his place from a year of bad form to an 18 year old). Markovic is to all intents and purposes a RWB and seems to just want to be on the field and wouldn't care if he was put in goal. It's amazing to see the difference in attitude and mentality - especially when one is essentially a failed winger having a late burst of form and one is a rising star who was a star player for two title winning teams in the first 2 seasons of his career!

It does make you wonder what's happening in some players head to get paid what they are paid, fail at what they are meant to be doing and get offered a second chance to do something else. Fair enough if you're being awesome at your best position and suddenly get shunted for the foreseeable future, but why would you just throw away an opportunity to reinvent yourself and prove yourself when you've been a consistent failure?

Never take what people in football say seriously.

Downing is a bit of a tool for saying this but I don't think any Liverpool fans are in a position to mock people over ridiculous interviews lol.

Just ignore it mate, i'm sure he realised how foolish it was as soon as he'd said it. Footballers are like gold fish; very short memories!

never liked downing. i was more upset signing him for 20 million than carroll for 35million. downing is rubbish no matter how many goals he scores for west ham

I don't get what you are saying at all in the last paragraph? Are you saying Downings entrire career was a failure? and he hasn't ever ''reinvented himself'' or just at Liverpool

He has been played with great success by Martin, Houllier/mcallister, and Allardyce.
I think heaping the blame on the cpatain for boroughs abject performances under Southgate is harsh, Southgate, was horrendous from what I recall in that season.

If memory serves correct Southgate wasn't the best manager and he hedged his seasons success by blowing his whole transfer fund on dutch striking sensation Alfonso Alvez. who scored like 2 or 3 goals all season (2 against united which made it all the better).

Is Downing obssessed with BR/LFC? He keeps talking crap about what BR may or may not have done to him hoping those of us with short memories forget how poor he was for majority of the two years he was here. He is just trying to blame everybody else for his abject failure to hack it at a big club like Carroll BUT at least credit to Carroll who never talks about LFC nor BR and is having a decent season and God bless him. There`s a reason Downing hasn`t gotten any better since his Villa days because he blames everybody else but himself for his own failures. He couldn`t hack it under KK nor BR so IMO, it`s not the coaches. It`s HIM and having a good season at a perrenial midtable club will not change that. I think he should shot his gob and enjoy his time at a smaller club with less pressure like WHU and move on because LFC/BR and the fans have moved on from him.

BTW, I am not talking about his time at Boro because I don`t care neither does it matter what he did b4 he came here hence, should have no basis on how his time here should be judged so for those who keep talking about his Boro or Villa days, should stay on topic and stop referring to his pre-LFC days to prove their points.

You think downing hasn't improved but Carroll has? at West Ham.seems odd to me that view.
