Stewart Downing was a personal low in my opinion - at the time I was watching a fair bit of football so had seen Downing a number of times and had been completely underwhelmed every single time. My heart sank when I found out we were paying 20million for an average (at best) winger - it was a position we were desperately lacking in at the time and that signing just confirmed, in my eyes, that we were not addressing it properly.

In terms of money wasted Carroll's is surely the worst though - Mike Ashley must have been pishing himself when that 35million offer came in.

Not the same thing but would also say Houllier not signing Anelka (after he had been immense for us on loan) was a dreadful error as well - chose El Hadji Diouff instead, shocking decision making.

In terms of a vile person would Suarez not be worse than diouf?
I can't remember a player bringing as much trouble to the club as Suarez.
In terms of player I would go for ballotelli, again a massive disruptive influence but did naff all on the pitch unlike Suarez and didn't come cheap either.
