Love these kind of posts and I know they're very subjective but I can't believe Gerrard doesn't even get a mention, maybe partner Viera with Gerrard but put him ahead of the Scouser, no way.

I'd take Henry instead of Shearer and pick one of Vidic or Hyypia over Terry. I'm not convinced by the Kelly pick but I'll give it a pass. What I have to argue is WTH are Duff and Speed doing being name checked in this article?

Based purely on how good they were at their best and ignoring longevity mine is:

Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Mohammed Sissoko, John Barnes
Robbie Fowler, Luis Suarez

Probably a bit bosses, but oh well ;)

From things he's said in the past, I don't think Gerrard would even get in Ed1's all time Liverpool XI.

I know you could only pick eleven players, but am slightly surprised you didn't mention Cech, Van Der Sar, Vidic, Carvalho, Gerrard, Lampard, Cantona and Drogba in your reasoning for choosing certain players.

Reading the list reminds me of how good the Premier League was growing up. Personally I would have tried to fit Zola in that 11 somehow!

Don't always agree with the Eds but 001 is quite correct that Souness was a better player than Gerrard. If there was one difference, Souness had a finely tuned machine of a team around him, Gerrard most of the time did not. We have been fortunate to have some of the greatest players wear our shirts and it's great occasionally to savour their contributions.

{Ed001's Note - I think that was Gerrard's biggest problem, because he didn't have that team of greats around him to keep him on the ground as one of the team, rather than the saviour. When he did have quality around him, he was a much better player.}

But seriously- I agree with Putney about Henry. He'd be my first attacker on this kind of team, even ahead of Shearer. Absolute joy to watch him drift out on the left side, skip past a couple of defenders and curl one in at the far post. Seems like he did that 50 times, everyone knew about it but no one could do anything about it.

{Ed001's Note - I loved him as a player, but as I had decided to go on consistent quality, rather than just giving it to flash in the pans who had an outstanding season, to reduce the number of strikers, I cut it down to just players who had 300 appearances or more in the Prem. Otherwise I would have been unable to pick.}

Have to agree with ed01 over souness. The complete midfielder. Outatanding . Re gerrard afain eds right in rafas best team gerrard was at his best.
