So much for a computer making random fixtures. It's remarkably similar to last year's!

It's entirely random. There are a few articles about that explain how it's actually done. Worth a read if you can be bothered.

Can't be entirely random as you have other concerns involved, e. g. can't have a team playing all their home games first and you can only play each team twice, they set rules around not playing all Xmas and New Year fixtures at home or away, before you get to police input on which home fixtures can be at same time, for example Met don't want to be policing every London PL club at same time.

The fixtures are randomly generated with some exceptions which can be included in the algorithm.

And it's obviously not random because they make certain derbies fall on the same day. usually the Manchester, the Liverpool and the north London Derby.
