That is quite a sum of money considering the time period. I mean most clubs even in the premiership probably had record transfer less than 10mill i bet. Except united of course I mean say what you want about the genius of fergie but United definitely had the advantage over the majority of the PL at the time.

Stoneage, you have to compare the money paid at the time for Zidane to the other transfers that happened that year.
It was an extraordinary amount for probably the best player in the world at the time.
