Hi Eds,

Can anyone explain what has happened to FFP please? Does it actually exist?

{Ed002's Note - Yes, what is your concern?}

I honk he might be wondering why Man City are allowed to be spending £200m this window without selling a single player, am I right in saying FFP in done over 3 years and a club needs to be with in -£30m profit after the 3 year period? Giving City time to earn this money back?

{Ed002's Note - I can think off the top of my head of five players they have sold and others are to be sold. I suspect you want to drop thoughts about how FFP works and what it relates to - it is not just transfers.}

Hey Ed02,

Yeah, pretty much what the poster above said. Was wondering why teams like Man City are spending money like water and hardly recouping anything like that? I think Pep has blasted about 400 mil over the last 2 summers.

I don't know the ins and outs of the legislation, but hardly seems like 'Fair Play' to me. I don't know. I know you've posted some stuff on it before, but hardly ever hear it in the mdeia these days so thought the silence was an indicator that there's loopholes around it.

Thanks.

{Ed002's Note - They are currently in compliance with FFP. I suspect you think it simply relates to transfer fees or siomething like that?

Doesn't literally any income (except put in by the owners themself) "balance" it out regarding ffp?
So sponsors, TV licence, ad revenue, marketing, competition (cups/ leagues) rewards, Match Day Tickets and every other form on club related income - Not just selling players? And it’s based over 3 years anyway isn’t it?
So spend big for 2 years then let the books balance out xD.

{Ed002's Note - It is a rolling three years and you need to remember players are not always paid for in one go.}

Hi ed002, my knowledge of fair play is very limited, but what is to stop a rich owner paying say £200m to have his picture (or company name etc) to go up at a foreign rich clubs ground somewhere only for them to return the favour? Both clubs would be £200m up with the money going through the books etc so complying with fair play. I know this is probably very illegal but there must be lots of gray areas that clubs do exploit.

{Ed002's Note - No, that is not allowed and would be stamped on right away.

Manchester City (a) have a larger income than most, and (b) whilst working within the rules are making use of some pretty extreme sponsorship that comes via their owner's business interests. So the figures are skewed.

This is seen as an issue by UEFA and the reason there have been efforts over the past three years or so to agree a sponsorship cap. UEFA are happy for those European clubs that meet (now twice a year) to come up with a proposal, but so far they have failed to agree a figure. UEFA are aware that taking the matter to the European Club Association will not help them. Eventually they will come up with a cap themselves and that will be it. A similar issue is being discussed about capping TV and media income for FFP. With a UEFA senior official moved on it might be easier to push something through as the resistance was related to the three clubs that would be most impacted by a change include Manchester City and two clubs that play in the French league.

Effectively the cap would say something like, "regardless of the amount of sponsorship a club obtains, only the forst €115M will be allowable for the purposes of the FFP calculation". The same could be done with the media income - obviously that would hit the English sides and a few others only. It is contraversial nut there is a swell of effort from other sides to make it happen. One side who were leading the push pulled out of the group of "elite" sides earlier this year so it will take others to pick up the ball on that one. There is a meetingon August 24 and these issues will likely be touched on.}

"A similar issue is being discussed about capping TV and media income for FFP. "

This. This is something that seriously needs to be addressed. English clubs are massively influencing the market and inflation because of the amount of money they get from domestic and oversees TV and media income.

{Ed002's Note - It won't change the income, only the amount that can be taken in to account for FFP, but you are right it is distorted.}
