Anyone think Firmino could be our captain or vice captain within the next 6 to 18 months?

Not me, Olirish. He is a forward and needs to focus on what's in front of him and not bother about anything else going on behind him. CM's and CB's should be capt. IMO. Hendo is capt. now and by all accounts, that won't change and I'm cool with it. We have bigger fish to fry.

I really think it depends on what the future holds for Henderson. But at det moment we have a couple of potential caps I think. We have seen VVD got potential and Can if he stays. Ox is proper captain material, but I don't know how vocal he is and the same goes for Firmino. If we should be so lucky to land Alisson i the summer, he would be an option too.

A captain needs to be able to control the situation on the field and if needed, calm things down. Firmino has the most bookings in Europe for excessive goal celebrations over the past couple of years. Great player but let him get on with what he does best.

None of our front 3 should be captain or vice captain. Let them be free to do what they do best without additional responsibility or pressure being heaped on to them. Hendo is unlikely to be a first tema player next season if Can extends his contract with us so the likely options would be VVD, OX or Can.

Firmino is also the closest we have in the team to being a born winner. I don't think it matters what position the captain plays. As long as they lead by example, talk to their team mates etc.

I actually disagree partially with the whole notion about a Keeper or centre back being captain. Whilst they are in the best position to see the game, i would be really concerned if a player in a position which requires the most concentration was trying to analyse the whole team.

I was captain as a striker and i could see everything, because i was high up the pitch near to the half way line, and it didn't matter if i was watching my team mates and not the ball.

Ultimately, i don't think it matters. The best teams have leaders all over the pitch, and fir me the captain should be the player who everyone respects, and who sets the right example on and off the pitch. If you need a player to shout at you and tell you where to stand, the captain isn't the problem, the positionally inept player who needs baby sitting is!

Just an alternate viewpoint though. There is no right or wrong here.

If Can stays I reckon the next captain might be him. I know it’s a long shot but I haven’t given up hope that he might stay still.

there should be 11 captains on the pitch. Its shouldn't matter who the captain is, any players on the pitch can and should have the same impactresponsibilities.

There needs to be a distinction between field general and leader. If it's someone you want to notice trends in the game, kind of like a middle line backer where he stands in a good position to view the whole field, gives tactical instructions and orders. But if it someone you want who when the chips are down and you want to hear someone support, you wanna hear a red voice then does that person need to be analysing the game to say come on lads let's get stuck in. Vocal support can come from anyone, the right back, the physio, the fans. But field generals and tactics only come from special/ certain players, so what do we want?

The captain is hugely important, both on and off the pitch. You only have to look at the most successful teams to have graced the premier league and you'll see each of them have real leaders at the helm (Keane, Adams, Viera, Terry, Gerrard) .

It's even more vitally important I feel in the modern game with the influx of foreign players and the turnover of players. It's not just on the pitch, but a big part of it is off the pitch, ensuring the players understand the ethos of the club and what it means to represent the club and it's city (in our case) .

All them Premier League titles we won with the great Steven Gerrard. All hail!

I’d say you need leaders al across the pitch and we’re slowly getting that, henderson, VVD, chambo, Firmino, even Lovren at times, acting like they do for the team, on the pitch, off the pitch.

If we are serious about winning the league or any of the other competitions we participate in each and every player who crosses that white line to represent Liverpool football club should be a General.

It’s obvious isn’t it? Karius for captain. I’m surprised any of his disciples on here haven’t thought of it first.

More inclined to believe this post is about him captaining the club a few times before we sell him rather than a genuine question - hard to discern what's a joke by text.

The way Klopp has been rotating captains and winning recently would imply its less about the captain so long as the team has a clear style of play and everyone is committed and plays for each other. While I’m happy with Hendo remaining captain though, in the long term if he continues to struggle with his injuries we may need to rethink things. Personally I think in time Ox may develop into a leader in time, but not yet. I would reckon perhaps VVD after he’s been here a while if he can prove himself.

Got two good laughs there, Gerrards inclusion and the MKS wonderful retort.

Interesting view points from all.
Who is Barcelona captain these days?
Messi.
Ronaldo for Portugal.
Maradonna in the past for Argentina.
Gullitt for The Netherlands when playing in a more forward position.
The list goes on and they were all quite successful.
Surely it only matters if the captain has the respect of the players in the dressing room, regardless of playing position.
I agree about Van Dijk being a strong candidate potentially.
Of course Henderson might not go anywhere but if he does, then I genuinely think Firmino would be in with a shout.
He covers every blade of grass and has done that from day one here which other players would respect 100%, maybe he's not the most vocal sure but anyway I thought it might be an interesting debate, thanks!

From the way he conducts himself both on the pitch and in interviews, don't rule out Chamberlin for the role in the future.

Yeah, you may have a point hjikle.
He has proven the "experts" on here wrong, so happy to see them quiet for a while, who will they pick on next before he even kicks a ball in anger for us?!
Fickle Liverpool "fans" at their finest.

Easy McGoveb, Liverpool were one of the most successful Premier League teams with Gerrard as captain. 0 league title, 1 Champions League, 1 FA Cup and 1 League Cup in about 12 years.

Just to add that at times in our past, our captains have included Liddell, Dalglish, Rush, Barnes etc. I personally think too much emphasis is placed on the armband now. If it wasn't a requirement, I'd do away with it and say to the team "you are all supposed to be leaders".

21.) 17 Jan 2018

I think Carra would've done a better job at captain then Gerrard personally.

Agreed Spooked, if there wasn't the risk of him being even more pumped up and getting sent off far more often, then yeah I think you could well be correct.
I think they played good cop, bad cop pretty well regardless though.

I wouldn't want to add captaincy to Bobby's list of responsibilities, I want him to continue to become the all action hero he is well on the way to being.

For those of you of a certain age, remember what captaincy did to Ian Terrence Botham 36 years ago?

My picks, if Hendo sadly has to move on/ play less because of his injury, would be VVD or the Ox. Both have a certain something about them that screams command and demands respect.

I don't think Carragher cared. He was a leader regardless of whether he had an elastic band on his arm.

Ian Botham?!
Ah stop now, really?!

Just because one person failed at something, doesn't mean it'll happen to another.

26.) 17 Jan 2018
17 Jan 2018 18:20:20
Carra did not need an arm band to tell everyone why he thought!

Don't care. Didn't even realise Lovren was captain 'til half time on Sunday. Too much is made of it nowadays. They all should be responsible for eachother. The captain's job is now to flip the coin and liase with the ref, if necessary.
