Who is/ was the best Goalkeeper you've ever seen?

Dasayev for me in the 80's was incredible - Schmeichel of course was excellent but there was something that stood out about Dasayev for me, I can't quite put my finger on it.

Incredible agility and shot stopper, his kicking - well that was not so good but the back pass rule only came in around 1991/ 92 and he was on the way out at that stage, luckily for him.

Cheers.

Hate to say it but Schmeichel whilst at Man U was best keeper I have ever seen in my time watching football
the closest thing I have to seen to him was Cech before the head injury
Again pains me to say it but De gea is top top class nowadays
but overall I would say Buffon for his length of time at the top.

Good choices John.

Buffon was and still is top class.
Some saves he made defied physics almost at times.

I'd have added Seaman to that list too only for his weakness with lobs.
His positioning was questionable on a few occasions which led to long range lobs beating him in a few big games, not least against Zaragoza I think it was with Nayim lobbing him in the last seconds of a European final to win the game.

Iker Casillas or Gianlugi Buffon for me, I grew up watching them play. I was only 4 years old when Schmeichel left United so I can't say I seen much of him other than clips on TV so I couldn't call him the best. I remember admiring Dida at Ac Milan as well.

Has to be Schmichael and Buffon because I can't choose between them. And a special mention to Packie Bonner for Euro 88 and Italia 90😁.

Pat Jennings off course! 😆.

Casillas is a terrible keeper, Buffon on the other hand is one of the greatest ever.

Casillas is the most overrated goal keeper ever.

Buffon ze best.

Schmeichael and Buffon are the two standouts in my mind. Both very different styles, Buffon more flamboyant whereas Schmeichael probably an archetypical 'old school' keeper. if I had to choose I would say Schmeichael probably just edges it as, despite his large frame, he was very agile and able to make some truly gravity-defying saves. I'd also say he commanded his area slightly more. Be happy with either in my team though, both absolutely world class.

Buffon for me was/ is the best I’ve ever seen. Two out of left field that I always rated were Angelo peruzzi and Gregory coupet. That’s my top 3. If Schmeichel wasn’t a manc he probably would have made it in 😀.

Seen is Buffon but a game changer was Neuer as he has redefined goalkeeping with the rushing out sweeper keeper role, albeit goalkeepers have to be excellent with their feet also.

All time however -

Lev Yashin!

Easy, gigi Buffon. Around 2 decades of utter class. Shame he never won the champions league though.

What about Neville Shouthall? Thought he was pretty reliable in his day. And I know it's the Liverpool page so please don't go to town on me lol.

{Ed001's Note - he would get my vote mate.}

Now how did I forget about Neville Southall excellent keeper. Good cause I can get rid of Schmichael.

I think Zubizarretta was very good, he made goalkeeping look easy, he read the game well so he rarely made flashy saves, I miss that kind of goalkeeper.

Buffon, hands down. I watched his debut in 1996 vs the Milan team and the legendary George Weah in his prime. He kept a clean sheet and the first choice, the injured Lucca Bucci, never got his place back. The rest is history.

{Ed001's Note - the reason I would never opt for Buffon is because he never got to improve after his early days due to the back problem that has plagued his career. It is a miracle he has managed to play at the top level, let alone so long. I just don't see him being able to perform the miracles Southall did for many years. Some of his Wales' performances were just out of this world. Buffon has always played in a team that protected him and made it easier for him, Southall spent most of his career having to singlehandedly keep scores down. And any keeper that can win the man of the match award despite his team losing 7-1 deserves respect.}

Spot on, ED01. I remember Southall singled handedly winning Everton the FA Cup in 1995. Now that was a performance. I just liked Buffon cos I followed his career from jump and he grew a lot faster than many thought even tho, I agree with you that he played in very good teams. Even that Parma team he played on had the likes of Chiesa, Crespo, Fuser, Boghossian and the excellent Fabio Carnavaro as well as the solid Lillian Thuram.
