UEFA have announced that as of next year, 12 substitutions are allowed in the match day squad for the champions league and a 4th substitute is allowed if the games go to extra time! Got to admit I’m happy with this I’ve thought a 4th sub in extra time has been needed for a while since the game is played so much faster these days and so much more ground is covered!

Most importantly, players will no longer be cup-tied despite having played for other teams in the UCL or EL in the same season.

Certain players may now be viable for us in the January transfer window.

I'd also say that having a smaller number of possible subs does nothing for the game anyway. Sort of strange in a way, you have players, they play for the club, you pay their wages, they are fit and ready. but when it comes to the game they can't play. Klopp recently said he has no explanation why Solanke isn't in the squad. Wants him in it but unfortunately can only pick so many, and has to cover most positions in case of injuries.
It's a wonder this hasn't come up before. Take Gaelic football.5 subs allowed to be made but no real restrictions on who they are. If they are registered to the club they can be used.

Isnt the 12 subs only in the final?

The only issue with this is that it further pushes teams with smaller budgets into an area where they cannot possible compete with the likes of PSG and City because even if they manage to keep hold of a few world class players that they raise, there is basically no restriction on what some opposition can prepare for with double sized benches and more subs if people get tired. It's a double edged sword - hopefully it will improve the quality of the bigger ties as people are a bit more willing to go for it, and it could also help get young players on the field - when we go 5-0 vs Moscow and our bench options are all senior pro's it's a shame, because that's a risk free 20 minutes for Woodburn and Wilson. But it will definitely make it even more rare to have those shock results where Celtic hold Barcelona because Barcelona couldn't have a replacement to slot into their front 3 and a 6ft5 battering ram on the bench.

{Ed001's Note - the bench size only applies to the finals. The extra sub is something already in use in English football.}
