Hey guys, what do you think of charlie austin as a squad striker for next season? I know he probably doesn't fit klopps style of play and is another soton player but he knows where the back of the net is.

{Ed001's Note - no, I know the lad and I would not want him anywhere near Liverpool at all. He has a crap lifestyle off the pitch, which is almost certainly responsible for his repeated injury problems. Steer well clear.}

Have you met him mate?

{Ed001's Note - yes, at Swindon, he hung around with some people I knew and were not the kind of people you want a professional footballer to be around, shall we say.}

He hung around with your wife and daughter?

{Ed001's Note - whose wife? I have never been married. And any man hanging round my daughter then would have been in no condition to play any sport that did not involve a wheelchair.}

Never been married either Ed! I credit that as the main reason I've not got fat, wrinkled or gone grey yet. I am engaged though, so Fowler help me!

On the Wheelchair comment, Austin spends most of his time in one anyway from what I can gather, so did you guys have a run in? 😂.

{Ed001's Note - no, to be honest he was just a lad, the kind of dick you wouldn't have round your daughter but just a lad getting into the kind of scrapes lads get into. The problem was he is a professional sportsman who is living the life of a lad and hanging round with other lads. If you can't keep your nose clean you are not going to keep your body in good enough shape for regular football.....}

Cheers Ed. Great insight. Sounds like Austin is a bit like Gerrard was, rather than a genuinely bad person like Barton or Bowyer. Gerrard was never as fit as he should have been either and had a few minor court scrapes, probably because of the drinking culture he led.

Difference is, Austin isn't world class so it can't be as easily forgiven as it was with Stevie!

{Ed001's Note - Austin is a bit more of a lad. I did give you a clue as to what I meant in the previous reply....}

Yeah, at least Gerrard stuck to one women I guess!

{Ed001's Note - I wasn't meaning women.}

Ahh, just spotted the nose comment Ed! Naughty boy!

PakRed I'm not really getting involved in debates, but i'll quickly explain myself. Gerrard missed a lot of football out with muscle injuries. From 2009-2012 I was forever worrying he wouldn't be fit for important games. First thing Rodgers did was change his role to include less running, because his fitness was lacking from about 29 years old and onwards.

We have Solanke/ ings/ Origi/ Sturridge there and none will replace bobby any time soon. So why would we need to sign another striker when we have so many, even if one or two leave? Granted if ings Sturridge and Origi leave and maybe Solanke on a loan but while there’s so many at the club why worry about signing a squad player when we have so many.

When you know he doesn't fit in with klopp’s style, why buy him mate? What did you learn with the purchase of Solanke and Ings?

To be really competitive across 4 competitions next year, LFC has to move away from relying on a starting 11 to produce results. There must be less and less differences in quality between the starting 11 and the rest of the squad. Otherwise we see the slide in performance when 2-3 key players are out due to injury. Sure, you have to pay the bench players their value, but if the other top teams are doing it and players are accepting it, then we have to do it too. A player like Austin adds nothing that Solanke or Ings are not already giving us.

We should be looking to sign someone who will aim to put Mane, Salah or Firminho on the bench, why on earth do we want to sign a "squad player" just to sit on the bench and play one or two cup games?
