Away from any conspiracy theories regarding penalties, I honestly believe the standard of refereeing in the premier league is at an all time low.
I would be interested to hear other people's views. I have often heard comments about how refs are abused and threatened at every level from junior football and through to senior levels. I can imagine this must deter many who want to reach the professional game level.

Haven’t refs always got some decisions wrong? I think you have to factor in such things as every game is now filmed and available to view as it happens or on you tube within minutes, then there is social media going into a weekly meltdown, you only have to go on the live chat here when we aren’t 3-0 up in 30 mins,
Don’t get me wrong there are some terrible refs out there but every decision is scrutinised now where that was not the case in the past.

I completely agreee, it’s been getting worse year on year but this season has completely taken the piss. Every single week there’s at least a few shocking, unforgivable decisions. Mane getting sent off for trying to bring the ball down against city? Calvert Lewis’s penalty? The spurs debacle? Ederson basically assaulting mane and mane then being given the yellow card for falling into another player? It’s an actual joke, I’d go as far to say it’s at crisis point.

VAR is such a contentious issue because of the delays it causes. It always bugs me that I can watch a game in Pompey, hundreds of miles from Liverpool, but know within seconds on replays that the ref made a cock up. Wouldn’t VAR be better watched by a 2nd ref who can overrule the match ref via his earpiece in those obvious cock up situations? That way the delays are minimised but you still get the accuracy from the tech.

Or the match ref could stop the game and ask for the 2nd refs decision if he honestly didn’t see it. Gets the decision via earpiece within seconds and the game continues. It’s not that hard to make the tech improve the game. Serious lack of common sense with how to use the tech.
