{Ed001's Note - cheers mate, glad you think so.}

THANK YOU, ED on the Lovren tip. I saw near the exact thing you saw when I watched the game again hence, I posted this earlier:

"The press was being done by some and not by others hence, caught in two minds. This allowed Roma more time on the ball in midfield as seen when Nainngolan had all the time and space to float that peach to Dzeko to score. He had had NO such time for all the second half as Hendo was in his face. "

People should watch the first goal again and all Ed said, is exactly what happened. Naingolaan had all the space and time to drop that dime on Dzeko. Lovren saw that play WAY before it happened and tried to stop it and missed the header by a whisker. That is NOT a mistake, IMO. That is a guy who saw danger and tried to stop it and failed. It's called DOING YOUR JOB. It's not his fault that the others hung him out to dry, as Ed said. I hope many of us here will change their minds about slating Lovren and even tho sometimes he is prone to make a mistake, sometimes he is let down by his team mates and that happened here. Great read, Ed. God bless, my friend.

Just want to say when a lot of people blame lovren for so much this year . But then no says anything when gini misses an open goal.
My son plays CB and got knocked out of a cup final last week. I could see on the fasces of he’s team mate parents that we lost because of 2 late goals but no one said anything about the 5 missed chances we had.
Sorry bit of a rant there.
(Oh and the ref missed my lad getting pulled back at the wrong time which corse the goal)

Always good to read your reviews Ed. For me Salah was man of the match. His performance last night was the best I've ever witnessed of any player in a red shirt. I honestly believe he could have got another 2 had he stayed on.

{Ed001's Note - I was torn between him, Firmino and Henderson, but chose Hendo because he changed the game when stepped up.}

thanks for the perspective. because of how the game ended, conceding 2 late goals, the general atmosphere among fans was dampened.

but to put things in perspective, i would not have expected us to put 5 pass Roma; 2, maybe 3 goals, but 5, that was out of this world!

also, because of how Roma overturned a 3-goal deficit previously, the sense is we have allowed them to have a sniff of hope. nonetheless, thinking back, i don't think the supporters were feeling very confident either when we held a 3 goal lead against city in the previous round. i also know a few who felt the 5-0 away lead to Porto wasn't secure either! point is, this is the CL, you show up for every single game regardless of aggregate score, because if you don't, there's enough quality to put you to the sword.

i'm looking forward to the next game because Roma has to attack, and that means space for our front 3. and the more desperate they get, the more open the game gets, the more opportunities we'll get. and the last thing Roma want is a game where the 2 teams try to outscore each other.

also, in spite of their experience, this Roma team's mentality can be broken. afterall, they did give up during the game, only to come alive after Dezko scored.

all in all, they have a greater tactical headache to resolve while what Liverpool needs is a clear and ruthless game plan, players turning up to do their jobs and with a front 3 that lethal and on-form, a manager and captain who hates complacency, and players who've shown they do turn up for the big games, i believe we just might have too much for Roma.

Good read that ed.

I understand the view point on the Dzeko goal but to misjudge the flight of the ball like that wasn't great. Think if the three defenders are holding there line possibly trying to play players offside and one doesn't it's going to cause problems. But players will make mistakes now and then, bound to happen.

I think that first goal came from not having midfielders to bring on to replace the energy levels that where falling after such a incredible 70 mins. More reasons we need to bolster that midfield in the summer. If we had a ceballos or keita available too I think they'd provide the fresh legs we needed on that 75th min onwards.

{Ed001's Note - I did say he made an error.}

Great write up. I was happy to see you gave Mane that praise. I've seen some sites downplay his contributions due to some missed finishes, but he seemed to be everywhere and very involved from the get go.

{Ed001's Note - I think he has come on in leaps and bounds over the last few weeks.}

yes, Hendo and Salah were both brilliant, we are going to the 2nd leg with a 3 goal lead, one away goal and we should be into the final,
as for their 1st goal, I thought that when Dzeko peeled off Loren, who didn't respond, also TAA, could have been a couple of yards deeper, cos at that moment, Dzeko was on his own,
yes, great dink of a pass, but Lovren, had he been closer, would have got that header easy .

Happy, don'gt know if you read ehat Ed said re: Lovren BUT Lovren DID respond and dropped deep to cut out the the whereas all the midfield (left Naingolaan with acres of space to get the right accuracy on the chip) and fellow defenders did not recognize the danger. He saw the danger, dropped deep and tried to do his job and missed by a whisker which happens at this level cos we are playing with very fine margins here. You say "had he been closer". Sorry but that is nitpicking, IMO. We are talking fine margins here, my friend.

He was where he was supposed to be as the others had switched off including TAA who just stood there instead coming across (which he had done some times before that in the game) on the cover. The fact of the matter is that the whole team was responsible for that goal cos you cannot blame the only guy who spotted the danger and tried to stop it w/ o blaming everyone else who did not do their jobs hence, make him look like an arse for no reason. That's to simple of a conclusion to make.

Longthing, I feel for your son, man. I played CF in my amateur days in France and there were a couple of games where I missed chances (once, including a penalty) and we lost and frankly, I felt I was to blame cos had I finished 2/ 3 of those chances, the defenders get an easier game and we win. This is why as players, it is everyone's job to protect each other. I hope your son recovers from this setback and hey, if he played in one Cup final, he can definitely play in another one and hopefully, he will learn from this and put things right when that time comes. YNWA, man!

Completely agree with Hendo being MoM - he was everywhere and rarely put a foot wrong. Salah was class and deserved the plaudits but Henderson looked like Stevie G at his best in midfield.
Lets also remember that, as well as scoring 5 goals, Lovren + Wiji + Mane missed absolute sitters. Roma got off lightly imo.
