Soccer is basically a battle between scoring goals and preventing goals being scored.
So ideally, if an outfield player (forward or midfield) has the right technic and temperament, he should score every time.
But, if the defender and or keeper has the right technic and temperament, they should prevent the goal from being scored every time.
So there has to be human error or lack of concentration or just a plain simply, I player doing a better job at that point.
Sometimes the error or lack of concentration seems worse.
Keepers will make mistakes. Defenders will make mistakes. That's how we end up with goals.
Strikers do make mistakes. That's how we don't end up with games with ridiculous scores at times.
When our players score, we feel they were brilliant. When the other team scores, we feel our defense or Kepler messed up.
My point is, yes Karius messed up in the biggest way at the wrong time. But how many times have the oppositions keeper messed up to allow us to score?

Top Goalkeepers win leagues.
They prevent certain goals and rarely give away soft goals.
Karius gives away too many sift goals.
Btw
Goals change games.

Even more evidence of fans outlook being off sometimes was the England match. Some England fans are slating Henderson for missing a penalty and in the same breath praising Pickford for Saving there pen. So our keeper is amazing for saving there penalty but our player is rubbish when there keeper saves a pen?

Langland, a top keeper may go towards winning the league.

However it is not a guarantee, look at De Gea, arguably the best in the world but didn't take Utd to the title.

What you need from a keeper is someone who minimises mistakes, they will always make one or two just depends on luck if they cost points of not.

IMO Karius went along way To improving our fortunes in defence in the back end of last season, unfortunately he made mistakes in the biggest game of his career, it happens.

Leicester proved it’s a squad game that wins titles, yes a new keeper may help but there is also 10 other positions on the pitch.

I think Ederson is an ok keeper but he rarely gets tested because everyone was petrified of what their outfield can do. Next season we will have a team that will frighten defences.

You are correct though goals win games, and we should score a bucket load!

With De Gea United got 2nd without him they would be 4th or 5th and with a top keeper we could have been 1st or 2nd instead of 4th.

{Ed002's Note - You need rid of Klopp then - he is making these decisions and costing the club points.}

The only thing I can't seem to work out is why all of a sudden we realise the prices being asked for these keepers are too much?

The prices floating around (for months) have always been ridiculously high, why now all of a sudden bulk at it?

It's not as if we were going to get Oblak or Alisson for cheap. Maybe the club were waiting for the storm of the Champions League to pass over. I don't know.

Spot on, WYRed. This idea that "a top GK wins you trophies" is not full proof and never has been and people banging on and on about it will still not make it full proof.

Pepe is regarded at the club as a top GK in his time. How many PL's did we win with him? NADA! In fact had SG not saved his bacon in the 2006 FA Cup, he would have been responsible for us losing that final. Also, Oblak replaced Courtois who won la Liga at Atleti. Have they won the league ye with him in goal? Same with DDG. He is arguably the best in the world YET Utd ain't won the PL since 2013. And like you said, LC has shown that winning the PL is a squad game and had BR not bottled it in 2014, we would have won the PL with the worst defence in the top 5 that season and with the legendary Lev Yashin I mean, Simon Mignolet in goal. Yeah, exactly.

Bottom line is that winning the league or any trophy is a team game where everyone contributes to the cause. It is only in England that I hear this nonsense that a GK wins you x amount of points. IMO, that has NEVER been true. The GK needs to perform just like everyone else, end of story.

Conceding goals is not always a case of making a mistake. Football is not a science or a mathematic equation. Look at bales 1st goal in Kiev.

No one really made a mistake, Bale just scored a phenomenal goal. Having better players gives you a better chance but nothing is guaranteed. We lost to west brom and Swansea last season. Signing oblak is no guarantee of winning the league but it would increase our chance.

Brilliant post, Prince. I fully agree. Football is a very nuanced sport where 2+2 almost always equals 5. It is the people who consider 2+2 must always equal 4 in football, that come up with these wild claims and guarantees whereas any one with a functioning brain and capable of using nuance to analyse football, knows that is not how it works.
