Going back a bit in time here but does anyone remember or can they please tell me the feeling or general comments on the forum around the time we bought Henderson Downing and Charlie Adams
I remember being Abroad and just feeling so underwhelmed with these three big signings but convincing myself it was King Kenny and everything would turn out ok
was I the only one thinking this way?

I remember everyone being baffled by Henderson and Downing. People wanted Juan Mata and Arda Turan if I remember correctly.

Charlie Adam had quite a buzz though. Some crap about his corners alone being worth £10m. Wonder what person said that? 😉.

{Ed025's Note - mrs adam i suspect.. :)

I was the same as you Johncrow. Trusted in the King, and defended our ‘British grit and spine’ with my non-Liverpool supporting friends, but was secretly thinking “WTF?!? ”

Oh how times have changed!

Still the last Liverpool manager to win a trophy tho!

I distinctly remember thinking Joe Cole on a free, Milan jovanovic, and Danny Wilson was a really decent summer.

I always thought Henderson would turn out to be an excellent footballer, wasn’t necessarily sure if it would be while playing with us though but delighted he has.

Henderson I thought was a good buy. Worst feeling was Balotelli though I don't like to bash our players I thought that was insane. Carroll was the one I thought would be a world-beater with us. Salah wasn't all that well received but I thought we had a strong squad last season, but nowhere near a champions league final. There is a lot of optimism at the moment but three teams finished above us in the league. Our business also far has been above and beyond my wildest wishes. Still pinch myself when I think we are getting Alisson.

I personally expected more from Joe Cole when we signed him. I ended up underwhelmed.

My recollection:

Reaction to Henderson was a mixed bag. I don't think anyone thought he was particularly good or bad, per se. Some fans thought he was way overpriced, others thought it was good for us to be investing in young English talent.

I remember a lot of statistical justification with Downing. "He has X number of assists so he'll be a great signing" and so on. But I don't think anyone was really excited by him. Tbf to Downing, I think he played a lot better than a first season with no goals and no assists would suggest (let's not forget our frankly stunning ability to hit the woodwork that season, something like 33 by Christmas, wasn't it? ), but he was the one thing a winger can never be in the eyes of fans: boring. He wasn't one for dribbling past players, just get the ball, make a yard and put in a cross. Too bad the guy he was supposed to be hitting with the crosses didn't play half the time and looked distinctly off the pace until about April.

Adam was divisive. I can't remember anyone having a neutral opinion on him. He was either a left-footed Scottish Alonso, or an overweight journeyman who thought he was 10x the player he actually was. I fell into the latter camp. Undoubtedly technically gifted, but an absolute non-entity defensively and would tend to waste the ball by trying long passes when they weren't really on. Could've been a very good player if he'd gotten the right coaching in his early career.

I remembered that I didn't like Henderson when they announced the signing, but was excited with Downing. The latter probably because of my soft spot towards left-footers😁.

When Hendo signed I didn't think it was a good move at all, I didn't necessarily not like him as a player I just didn't think he'd fit into Liverpool at the time. How wrong was I? he's quality, I can't wait to see more of him next season with some better players around him, he'll just impress further.

{Ed025's Note - i dont think he will get as much playing time as you seem to think salah..

That whole transfer window drove me bonkers! I couldn't believe the money we were spending for 1. And 2, the players we were buying with said money. In the end Henderson turned out pretty good, so you can almost say we spent 100 million to get our next captain after Gerrard I guess.

I sarcastically messaged my mate that we would win the title when Mane signed for c£30m. How wrong was I (what a player) though still havne't won title - yet!

I think after Adam impressed with Blackpool the season before we bought him, I thought he'd go on and be a really good player for us. After a reasonable start it became clear he was out of his depth at Liverpool. I was never a huge fan of Downing, but thought Carroll would go on and be a world beater for us. I believe his lifestyle and injury issues put paid to that, but from time to time you see glimpses at West Ham on the few games he is available for them that he does possess natural talent.

Since 2010 I think our best buys have been Suarez, Firmino and Salah (not including this summer's signings) and worst were Konchesky, Poulsen and Jovanovich. Close behind those you could easily drop in Joe Cole, Balotelli, Adam, Downing, Moreno etc.

If I remember rightly there was a lot of hype about the players coming in. Adams was the player of the year at Blackpool and Henderson was player of the year at Sunderland and we all knew knew about Downings crossing ability. Bit None were great that year. Downing was bought for Carrol so he could put in decent crosses but Kenny never played the two of them together. He took off carrol for downing or visa versa. Adams was suppose to be an expert on set pieces ( he's worth £10m or more so Ferguson says on his corners alone) but didn't turn out that way. That leaves us with Jordan, he took over the mantle from Gerard and isn't doing too bad a job in my oppion. He runs, tackles, drives the team forward at every opportunity I don't think he was too bad a purchase.

I was not happy with Henderson or downing personally. I was really hoping for Mata. But I’m happy to be wrong about Henderson.
