Thanks Ed001.
A younger Brian Clough once described him as the best centre back in Europe at one time, I believe.
He scored a lot of goals too, Wiki has 70 listed which is startling, even accounting for his longevity.

{Ed001's Note - he played up front for a while mate, as I mentioned, and he had a very good goal ration as a forward. 12 goals in 21 appearances up front I believe. He should have had far more caps for England, but he was not focused on his game enough. Fantastic player though.}

He was very good, I agree.
There's a lot of footage available and his reading of the game was top notch, as you say.
Leeds were the best footballing side of the day, every one of them could play.
Jackie Charlton played with some legends, for Leeds and England, and definitely deserves that accolade himself.

Have you done one of these on Alan Ball, Ed?
If not, get your head together with Ed025, and let us have your thoughts please?
I'm tempted to think that fella may have been as good as anything going at his peak - Everton and early Arsenal. Thorn in the side of Liverpool too.
Ta.

Great read, as always, Ed. Thank you. I love the quote by Raich Carter (another great player, by all accounts) who was Charlton's first manager at Leeds. When playing at the back for the first time, Jack asked him what he had to do, to which Carter replied "see how fast the centre forward can limp! " Classic quote! Up there with Bob Paisley's, when at half time of Barney's debut said "I think they shot the wrong Kennedy! " Whatever happened to managers humour?!

{Ed001's Note - yep that I was saving for his Legends of the Game article that accompanies this, but I haven't written that yet.}

Look forward to it, Ed. All the best, mate.

{Ed001's Note - cheers mate.

And Juicer I have added him to the Legends list, somehow he was missing, I thought I had him as he was the white boots guy and it is his fault no one wear black boots any more.}

Too right, Ed. Him and Alan Hinton have a lot to answer for!

{Ed001's Note - but at least he got to play near a good team....}

Ha ha, perfectly true, Ed, perfectly true!

Reminds me of a cloughey quote, when one of his players was concussed - doctor said he can’t play on boss, he doesn’t know who he is! To which he replied, well tell him he’s Pele and let him carry on!

{Ed001's Note - that is apocryphal, it has been attributed to about 40 different managers.}

Apocryphal - fantastic vocabulary sir!

Just as a matter of interest, Ed, what was your attitude towards Nigel Clough, when we signed him, given what his vile father had said about us a few years earlier. Perhaps doesn't belong on the banter page, or any other page come to that.

{Ed001's Note - it wasn't his fault what his dad said and Nigel was with us when it happened to his great embarrassment.}

Thanks Ed.
Just looking at lfchistory. net and Wor Jackie played against Liverpool 24 times but never scored.
Biggest loss was a 5-0 thumping in Nov 1966 when Don Revie was impressed to say that ". Liverpool looked the best team in Europe, let alone England".
Also in the crowd was Rinus Michels who thought that his Ajax team would give Liverpool a better game than Leeds.
We all know what happened after that!
Your mate Johan is what.

{Ed001's Note - Jack always said Anfield was his favourite away ground.}

I didn’t know that, my dad told me it, assumed it was true!

{Ed001's Note - it is very possible he did something similar as well, but he certainly wasn't the first.}

I think Nigel was signed by Souness, Ed, in 93.

{Ed001's Note - I think we might be talking about different comments mate. He made a set of comments after Nigel was playing for us for a while which caused a lot of distress and embarrassment for Nigel. Nigel fell out with him for a while over it because of the comments.}

I'm sorry, Ed. It's my age! I could have swore his comments were made at the time, but they were made later, as you rightly say. I will go back to the Sudoku to improve my memory!

{Ed001's Note - no worries mate, he might well have made comments at the time as well, I don't remember whether he did or not. I just know that Nigel was very upset when he made some while the poor lad was playing for us.}
