Watched highlights today of our 4-1 win against manutd in 2009, and then coincidentally have not long read that sir david moyes thinks that team is better than our current team now. Ed001 I highly respect your opinion on all things liverpool and was wondering if there was any chance you could compare, player by player the both teams please.

{Ed001's Note - I will do that tomorrow mate.}

That’ll be really interesting Ed! Look forward to that!

{Ed001's Note - I am looking forward to doing it to be honest. Be interesting to see if there is anything in what Moyes said.}

Yeah it will actually. Could be a case of more “star names” in the Benitez side (Alonso, Gerrard, Torres) but the current crop being more of a tight-knit team. Will be really interested in your views mate.

Yeah I third that, will be very interesting indeed!

Maybe Liverpool aren't playing at the level of 2009, maybe not even the level of last season but it is obvious to most that we are barely out of 2nd gear atm. There is much more to come from this squad and I think that's plain. The impressive thing is we are still winning. We have won every game and we didn't do that in 2009.its not as black and white as it seems.

We drew too many 0-0s that year, because that is what we are like, until now!

Pointless really to compare then with now, completely different managers and styles. Don't forget that damn Macheda coming out of nowhere and winning 4 extra points to give Man U the title anyway.

We got 86 that year and 86 in 2014, which has been enough to win titles plenty of times, that's just how the cookie crumbles. Last year the champions got 100 and they still look like a team hungry for success.

If we can get 87, which I have no doubt we will, that would prove this is the best premership team we ever have.

Reina/ Alisson, Van Dijk/ Agger, Firmino/ Torres are the interesting debates.

To be fair.

The only comparison needed is klopp vs rafa.

Could rafa be doing what klopp is doing now with our team and what could klopp of achieved with the disgustingly talented team rafa had.

Did rafa miss serve them or did they achieve everything they were capable of.

Or did both managers do their best but klopp has better owners and environment than rafa or does klopp just act better than rafa did.

That's where I think the comparison lies anyway.

Both are insanely talented.

Carra for Gomez, Alonso for wijnaldum, hendo for gerrard -although in a midfield two i think jordan would work better with xabi - then switch firmino to the ten with Fernando Torres up to.

Alison
Trent carra van dijk robbo
Gerrard Alonso
Salah firmino mane
Fernando

Still mad to think a team of reina, carra, agger, Alonso, mash, Gerrard (pomp), Fernando. Didn't win the league.

With a bench consisting of Cavalieri, Insua, Ngog, Arbeloa, El Zhar, Babel. I am surprised we weren't relegated. Not to mention Riera and Skrtel who started that day.

I think it's a very tough one. In terms of back 5, it's definitely a draw in terms of quality except the 2008/ 09 version couldn't stay fit (Agger, Aurelio especially) . Midfield, 2008/ 09 is better, as much as I love Hendo and Milner, Gerrard and Alonso in their pomp would walk into our current midfield easily. Forwards, 2018/ 19 is way better, with the way we play, the way they interact, the pace, power and electric counterattacking. So first 11 would be quite equal imo, but over a season, I think current squad would triumph as we've just got a lot more squad depth now. Lovren, Sturridge, Shaqiri, Keita and Fabinho have yet to play any significant minutes and they're all very useful weapons that the likes of N'gog can't compete with.

We are just comparing the first 11. What everyone forgetting is the bench strength. I will go with this team. We have someone to come from bench to make a difference now but not during that season. But both first 11 are too good though.

Team maybe better ( disagree) current squad is miles better. Then take into consideration about the other teams set up. Different pressures etc.

I think our strike force today blows that one out the water. Peak Torres was equal to anyone but Kuyt, Babel, Benayoun etc are just not Mane and Salah level.

Our midfield then was the best in the world and this one doesn't compare. Not at all a slight on this current teams midfield, I'm not 100% convinced you could pick three players in the world to build a midfield as good as that one was right now.

The defense was about equal - Robertson and VVD with Carragher/ Agger and Arbeloa. Early indications are that the keepers are equal too but you might give it Reina on the basis of the years he had spent proving his ability compared to Alisson's season and a bit at the top.

Klopp vs Rafa - very different to each other but both excellent with what's happening on the field, excellent with the fans and flawed behind the scenes and cameras with Klopp giving players unrealistic expectations of playing time and progression and Rafa far too involved with management politics.

So maybe the 09 team is better than today's, maybe not. But it won't be by far either way.

As good as our team was I think people forgot how absurdly good United’s team was. Ronaldo, tevez and Rooney upfront with Neville vidic Ferdinand Evra and van Dee sar at the back. Probably the best defence I’ve ever seen and a front three that were all capable of scoring a goal from nothing, midfield wasn’t bad as well!

Agree with stg and Swish, winning the league is about your squad (obvious exception - Leicester)

That’s going to be an interesting one, looking forward to the ed. Would be interested to get your opinion on the comparison of the team spirits and characters in the dressing room. Having such strong characters as Gerrard or Carragher can be both a blessing and a curse. I think in our team right now you can see the difference of not having them, both good and bad.
I personally thought Moyes was wrong but could see his point. Our team now has far more depth to it, our bench was dire back then and we have more quality all over the pitch I think. I would agree that there were better players in some positions though I mean who wouldn’t put Alonso straight into our team now?

18.) 24 Sep 2018

I think today's team would beat 09 team. It's about putting the ball in the back of the net and we are better at that now than we were then. Alonso was a classy midfielder but milner gets more assists. Torres oozed class but salah almost doubled nando's best lfc goal tally.

The team is better balanced I think.

I read his comments and my first thought was his two assertions of the team not being as good as previous and winning the league are not necessarily correlated.

A team may not be as good a previous years but can still win the league, united being case in point for many years.

His only real argument for us not winning this year was he felt we were not ready. But who thought Leicester were?

Tbh i take all these comments with a pinch of salt, the proof in the pudding will be seen at the end of the season and i will be on the m62 to watch the trophy parade.
