We have a solid defence, a wealth of talent and variety in midfield, and are struggling for goals. We should convert to 4-4-2. Please discuss.

Your reasoning for going to 4 4 2?

Danny sturridge should be given a shot I think. I think obviously klopp spent a lot of money this year and with that comes pressure so Liverpool are playing a more measured style. Making sure not to lose and relying on our talented forwards to win games. I don't care, if we win the league winning 1 0 and 2 0 then we are happy.

Sturridge scored some big goals and was bang on form before being frozen out. I think him Salah shaqiri and mane work well together. I love Firmino but we have more than one striker and Danny is World class at his best. I think he should get a shot.

{Ed001's Note - Sturridge scored goals coming off the bench against tiring legs. Every time he starts he is slow, greedy and dreadful. He should stay on the bench for a late cameo.}

Read one of the Eds' reply long ago, how formation changes throughout a game. Talked to my father once long ago about this as well, and he told me the exact same thing. It's how the manager adapt and make changes during the game, instructing the players to change positions or applying certain tactics, or making substitutions.

What I'm saying is, it's more than just formations.

Tactics and formations change by the game, they also change during a game, there are a number of factors why Liverpool are not scoring as many goals.
The front 3 are not playing that well together yet, but I am certain that will change in time. The midfield would have ideally included Keita, who is going to massively improve us, but again it's going to take time as he's been injured and likely needs time to adjust.
Also Ed01 has highlighted the fact it was the World Cup in the Summer, many of our players have not had a good break at the end of last season and very little pre season training for this season.
Our forward 3 were all involved in the world cup, so maybe it is about conserving energy rather than going high energy press like last season.
I know the Euro game was terrible but we are unbeaten in the league, have far more points than we did at this time last season. Even our recent draws, are arguably good results, Arsenal away, Chelsea away, Man City home. At some point those teams will play each other so we get the chance to gain points on them.
Lets see where we are in the new year, could well be top of the league.

Couldn’t agree more Ed. Sturridge should be kept on the bench until 75.2mins 😉.

Absolutely agree with ed. I was saying to my uncle, as soon as teams came out for red star game. Sturridge will be bullied and float around doing nothing, and jumping out of tackles tonight. Unfortunately he is an impact sub in my eyes now. If you watch him press its half hearted. And the thing that's even more disappointing is if you think about it. His best asset was his lethal finishing, but like red star game and various others in last year or so he's missed a lot of guilt edged chances. And before am called a poor fan etc i hate fact am saying the above. As I've always liked Sturridge, but have to be honest and admit he's nowhere near the player of 3 years ago. Which is such a shame as so talented and brilliant to watch back then.

Agree w coco. Shame isn’t it. At one time, his pace, movement, quick feet and lethal finishing was a joy to watch. Just having him on the team sheet have you assurance that there’ll be goals or at the very least, threat to the opposition defence. He still has goals in him but will never be the player that he was again sadly.

Seems like he has to reinvent himself to become a starter at a big club again.

Unless we have Hendo at the base of midfield control the game, and preferably also Keita to give some drive to midfield, I would really like us to play 4-2-3-1 and give either Firmino or Shaqiri the responsibility to create at no.10.

Gini, Milner and Lallana playing together is just three link players IMO and none of which are truly a solid no.6, and none of which are really dangerous driving forward either. We were awful the other night with no-one really having clear roles and taking responsibility for anything.

Fabinho and Keita/ Gini behind Mane, Firmino and Salah with Sturridge or even Origi up top would have been a lot more dangerous IMO.

Above all though we need to rediscover our mojo quick. Midfield is looking pedestrian and our forwards are jaded and not on form. We need to bring back the aggressive pressing game and smash someone.

Greenflash, I disagree. First off, I don't think Studge was frozen out. He is simply not first choice and he clearly has accepted that as his role coming of the bench this season so you accusing Klopp of "Freezing him out" is unwarranted, IMO. Also, you say we should give him a shot. Studge has started 5/ 6 games this season out of the 16 we have played and lately in the Hudd and Red Star games, he has been poor so what shot does he deserve at this point apart from coming off the bench where he is more effective as Ed has said?

As for formations, they change all the time during games. In fact if you watch us play, you will find that we switch to a back 4 or a back 3 depending on what we are trying to do when in possession. We also switch to a 4-4-2 at times during games as well so dwelling on formations is futile esp. with a team like us where versatiltiy is key.

Regarding Tuesday's starting lineup I actually think it was a big mistake to leave Shaqiri at home, he should've started instead. Football is supposed to be separate from politics but I also think any controversy would've been more of a 'distraction' to the Belgrade players than ours. Shaq on the right with Salah up front. Or even better, the aforementioned 4-2-3-1 with Fabinho also replacing Lallana. I really hope to dog that we never ever see both Lallana and Sturridge start another game together.

Jurgen, Klopp was right to protect Shaq and btw, the team we put out on paper was good enuff to get a result on the night. They did not for the reasons we all know and IMO, has nothing to do with Shaq not playing. There are things more important than football and that includes protecting your players from atmospheres that could be hostile to them, esp. one that has NOTHING to do with football.
