I'm 31 so I only managed to see parts of Robbie Fowler, and appreciate how talented he was. Two questions why did he only get 12 starts for England and do you think Alan Shearer was a better striker than Fowler? My Newcastle supporting brother worships Shearer but says Fowler was better.

{Ed025's Note - i do like robbie zeppelin hes the local cheeky chappy from toxteth who made it good, but lets not be silly and compare him to shearer, he only got a dozen caps for a reason mate..he never produced it at international level, great goalscorer though and a very nice guy..

Different players, difficult to compare.

Fowler had far more talent, Shearer has more graft and more craft. Shearer was more focussed on success.
Players don’t get caps for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes the team doesn’t play to their strengths. Look at John Barnes for England or Ian Wright.

That's a bit harsh on him, didn't he have a lot of injuries that held him back? as I say I didn't see much of him in his Prime so I can't argue with you. I saw a lot of Shearer and I've always said he was the most natural finisher I've seen. I'm more of a Bergkamp fan though. Who do think was the best striker in the English game in your time.

{Ed025's Note - thierry henry was amazing zeppelin and hes the best of the premiership era for me, as an evertonian even im a bit young to have seen dixie dean so bob latchford was the best blue i have seen, big fan of kevin keegan and named my first son after him as he was not only good but gave 100% every time, no doubt some will say roger hunt or kenny were better but we all have our own opinions mate..

Fair shout for Henry it's hard to find a more complete striker he could play off the left, run from deep, play on the shoulder or with his back to goal. That Arsenal side was also the most exciting team to watch in the EPL era i don't even think this City team is as exciting to watch as old Gunners.

{Ed025's Note - i would agree with that mate, bergkamp and henry were fantastic and with viera and adams and seaman in goal what a spine that was, a total joy to watch..

I never had you down as a fellow Keeganite Ed025, wonders never cease.

{Ed025's Note - i even had the curly perm juicer, i was working by lime st years ago doing road repairs and kevin came past going to wembley to face ireland, one of our gang asked him if he wanted a cuppa and sure enough he sat with us in the caravan and insisted he had a cup without a handle and chatted for about 15 minutes about football, true story mate....minutes later steve highway passed and was made the same offer but sadly refused, lovely down to earth guy kevin and from that day on he was a bit of a hero for me..reluctantly.. :)

Yeah Thierry Henry for me too in the PL era, he was just unbelievable.

{Ed025's Note - great player mate..

My all time favourite player. Injuries and the emerging owen mucked up his career.
I firmly belive be would be in top 5 England goalscorers if it not for those factors.

Ha, a Scouser with a perm working on the black stuff. Love it Ed.
To be fair to Keegan, he was a feather cut man whilst at the Reds, far cooler.
Agree with the Henry sentiments too, fastest footballer I’ve ever seen. Frightening.

{Ed025's Note - i remember him giving carra a 10 yard start over 15 yards in one run juicer...and still beat him by 4 yards, also played with a smile on his face and i like that mate..

I'm only 24 so the best Prem striker I've ever seen regularly in their prime was probably Torres, Drogba or Aguero. Torres as the complete number 9, Drogba as the target man, and Aguero as the dynamic trickster. I can't really split them because they were all different players.

Suarez could have been up there with Aguero if he hadn't been such a POS and give it 3 more seasons and I reckon Salah will be right up there (in his new role) .

My favourite strikers to watch on highlight are Henry, Fowler, Bergkamp and Andy Cole but I barely remember any of them actually playing live.

In terms of technique, Fowler at his peak was on par with Suarez. He mightn't have been as overtly flashy in terms of dribbling and speed, but his touch, movement and hold up play were just as good, and his striking was arguably better.

If he'd had a manager who was willing to work him and Owen into a proper partnership (which would've been easily do-able) when he was at his peak instead of Houllier, and maybe took slightly better care of himself when injured, I'd say he'd have gotten a lot more than the 26 caps he did.

Better than Shearer? It's kinda hard to argue with Shearers numbers, so I can't go that far. And they're not really the same type of player anyway. It's a little like asking who's better out of Dalglish and Rush.

If only George best was able too play in the premiership cos he was so so so good his close control dribbling was unreal on some of the worst pitches u have ever seen, I know he was a man United player but hand on heart he up there with maradonna pele and the likes, check him out on YouTube if u haven't seen how good he is . Also his vulnerabilities make me love the guy even more he was a party animal but played like a man possessed.

That's correct. The full afro size perm came in only when he moved to Hamburg. But Keegan is still my favorite all time LFC player. Got me hooked onto Liverpool.

I'm surprised no one else has called the OP on this so I will.

What "parts of Robbie Fowler" did you see, Zeppelin, and was a responsible adult in the room at all times?

Agree with MK. For me the most complete striker I have seen in the PL era is Drogba. He had the lot and proved people wrong after a slow start with Chelsea. Movement, pace, power, two footed, good in the air, was quick and could hold the ball up. I hated that Chelsea bought him the summer after he bullied the LFC in europe when he was still playing for that french team, was it Marseilles? I can't remember.

Drogba was a great player but he done a fair share of diving. Robbie Fowler was a fantastic player totally relying on his natural ability, by that I mean he did not put hours of extra training to improve. He demonstrated his fairness to against David Seaman asking the ref not to award him a penalty. I loved him.
