Hey team.

Not bitter about the result. I'm in the fine margins camp and on that display in singularity, city deserved the points.

I've a question which is a genuine rule question and before ed 2 blasts me, it's not a we were robbed question.

When mane hit the post, he was clattered by the keeper. Had the ball gone out of play I wouldn't of thought any thing of it, however, the ball stayed in play and the keepers physical contact with mane prevented him following up.

Completely objective and non whining,
Why was it not a penalty?
Why is no one talking about it?
From a rules perspective where does it stand?

Cheers in advance. Genuine rule / media coverage question.

Good question honestly. I don’t think it was ever a penalty but I’m curious about the rule of law.

Benny!? My best guess if the advantage played was the shot on goal. Have wondered that in the past tho.

Also I think it's sad that some posters feel they need to preface their comments so as not to raise the ire of ed2.!

I agree Faithworks, for me this site wouldn’t be the same without Ed002’s Exocet replies. I’ve been shot down but it’s all part of the banter and what we love about the site.

I’m more worried about 25, I’m sure he’s a secret Kopite!

{Ed025's Note - not on your nellie drogie, in fact i take that as an insult mate.. :)

Tbh I haven't looked back at it. From my memory mane was on his feet trying to reach the rebound. I was (like dejan lovren) watching the ball though, so I can't say. Good point although I don't remember any body calling for a penalty.

I don't think it should have been a penalty cos to me, Mane's collision with Ederson was incidental contact as neither player could have stopped their momentum and prevented the collision esp. since Mane clearly tried to score.

Now, had Mane touched it past Ederson and the collision happened then penalty all day. The fact that no one called for it tells you all you need to know. Just my opinion.

Great question and I’ve just watched it back and it’s definitely a foul by Ederson. i just don’t know the rules regarding the fact he got his shot off. the thing is If mane had managed to evade Ederson he would of had a great chance of being first to the rebound.

{Ed002's Note - Maybe Ederson tripped in the long grass?}

Hi Buddy from the referee perspective these are often fouls and very rarely given. I gave one in exactly the same circumstances about 12 years ago however the thing that sold it for me was that the ball hit the near post and bounced almost directly back to where the striker lay poleaxed. The keeper turned away sheepish and didn’t say a word but the defenders and management team went mad.

The striker needed lengthy treatment so whilst the defenders with me I simply explained what happened and pointed at the injured player. The defenders then tried to argue that because the striker got his shot away it shouldn’t be a foul, trying to suggested he effectively had “advantage”. I shot that down by stating it’s a clear foul for a late challenge anywhere else on the pitch so in the box it’s a pen.
Long winded answer buddy but technically “ yes “ it’s a pen, will many referees give them, no, only if the striker is cleaned out and really injured with the ball still in the vicinity.

It’s a good one to ask BB if he has ever given a pen for it, he’s level 4 so is currently active whereas I’m an old git who rarely referees nowadays. Hope that gives some insight that your instinct is correct, most people follow the ball and will have missed it completely, I only got onto it after the replay tbh. Cheers.
