A german friend of mine who supports Leverkusen was telling me about how Julian Brandt's move into midfield was finding a lot of success not unlike the Ox's move last year. Got me thinking, any former or current Liverpool players you would think would have done well in a different position?

I'm always curious how defenders like Hansen or Van Dijk would do in a midfield considering their technical quality.

Id like to see trent at cm, although i doubt that will be this season.

I'm sure I'll get hammered for this but I actually think Henderson could have a future in defence. Most probably at right back. He's quick, reads the game well, makes powerful runs off the ball, defends well o e on one, and can whip in great balls from wide.

If Trent ever moved into midfield as is expected, I can see Hendo moving back in his place.

People need to get over this Trent to midfield nonsense. It’s never going to happen. Just spent over 100m on two midfielders, and will replace lallana and Milner with other actual midfielders in the summer.
Everyone who says they want to see him in cm, has never actually watched a game with him in midfield.
The lad is now a right back, and will see his career there.

To the op. I think gerrard could of gone and played in any position, in any team in the world, and put a shift in.

No chance mk he has no pace, it wouldn't surprise me if this or next could be his last season with us due to fitness concerns and his age

And benny i really don't think trent is a right back myself, he's played his whole youth at cm. I know that's meaningless but i think he would excel at cm once his positioning has come on. I also don't think he would be happy to stay at rb as in many interviews he has stated cm is his position

Have a good day as well lads.

Lol Trent is 20 years old and already being ruled out for a new position? come on, he has plenty of time to prove he's good enough for CM which I believe he's capable of. I'd understand if he was 27 and people were talking about him moving to midfield but he's 20! give the lad time.

{Ed001's Note - how old was Milner when he moved into central midfield? Most players change position throughout their career.}

consider Liverpool’s 1977 European Cup Final lineup; Neal played both full back roles in his career, Tommy Smith and Emlyn Hughes started out in midfield and also played across the back four, Callaghan was a right winger and converted to a centre midfielder after knee troubles, Ray Kennedy from target man to left side midfield, Heighway from left winger to a more central role, Keegan from midfield to striker etc etc.
It was always a trait of Liverpool teams, good footballers who were able to adapt.

I like to think that this present set up continues in that vein. Perhaps not to the same wide extent but the front three can interchange, midfielders too, both full backs could probably play as wing backs and, as you say, Trent might eventually evolve into a Wijnaldum-type midfielder. Both Gomez and VVD are quick enough to cover wide positions if absolutely required.
I hope that this theme will continue in the Summer signing/ s, perhaps a full back or two who can also play further forward and a pacey front man like Werner who can be used in the three forward positions.
It adds value to the squad, allows rotation and cuts down on waste.

Very true Ed, Trent being ruled out at 20 years old is just nonsense talk. He could change position in a year or two and then again in 5 years.

I can’t see Hendo being a right back sorry, he’s not quick enough especially as in our system our full backs need to be able to get up and down the entire pitch all game. I remember him playing on the right of midfield when he first joined us and he wasn’t particularly good there, midfield is where he is best.

I actually kissed the screen when he scored that 40 yard screamer to take the hammers to extra time in FA Cup final.

To the OP, one of the most successful changes of position I can remember is Thierry Henry.

Tell you what; the day TAA plays cm 3 games in a row, I’ll play the following charity match in my pants.
With the constant pressure managers are under, you think anyone would risk playing him out of position?
Not to mention his international career; with Southgate looking to play walker in the back 3, and trippier being pony, TAA could be the rwb for the next decade.
We aren’t even looking for a right back.

I must be watching a different Henderson. He doesn't lack pace at all. Klopp apparently wanted to play him at centre back in the FA cup against Wolves, and he played right back against Leicester and ran Gray off the ball every time they faced up 1 vs 1 (who by the way, is no slouch) .

I knew I'd get hammered for it, but I still think we'll see him covering in defence much more often. He's twice as fast as Milner and he has played right/ left back increasingly as he's got older. The main difference is Hendo has the reading of the game and the height to also cover centre back.

The most obvious recent (and I would say successful) position change is Milner. From a right winger at ManC he has come in and changed his game to one that is based on playing central midfield and doing either the offensive or defensive duties (or both), depending on the team being played and team tactics decided by Klopp. And his ability to adapt and play various positions has been a Godsend for the team, that people do not talk about much, unfortunately.

The only way I would move TAA into midfield is after asking myself (and answering) which player/ position is he better than, and how much better is he? Right now, my answer is that he isn't better than any midfielder playing in our starting team. He's perfect staying where he is.

I know it’s not the same level by any means but I don’t think many people know that Trent played 10 games for the England u19’s as a right winger and got 7 goals. I’m not saying he’ll end up a winger or a cm or a right back, I just think that the lad is clearly talented enough in multiple positions and that it’s definitely conceivable that he won’t spend his career at right back.
