Next season

LFC win the FA Cup
quarter final League Cup
Semi final CL
Second in the league 90 points - 5 points behind City.

Success or failure?

{Ed025's Note - failure mark, winning the league is the holy grail for liverpool and if it were any other team it would be success mate, its been far too long im afraid and even the CL win last season only cushioned the blow...but you are close i believe..

You’d have to say failure I think. Although a successful season by any standard there wouldn’t have been any improvements on last season and a step back if anything.

Only 1 team can win each trophy. And the league is the most contested and competitive league in world football for me. Winning it would be the holy grail but not winning it would not necessarily be a failure to me. A failure in the league is not actually competing for it. In the last 10-15 years we’ve only actually competed for the title 2-3 times so the other league seasons can be deemed a failure.

Anything less than winning either the League or European Cup is failure. Reality is that it’s very hard to look past City for the league as they’re consistent, they win when teams park the bus because they have invention and players who can turn a game in midfield with a moment of brilliance. That is the difference, we’re hard to beat, but also teams have worked out a way to stop us. And managed to do it on eight occasions last year.

Would of course be a success, We only just won our first trophy since a 2012 league cup! Klopp hasn't even been here 4 years and the team he took over was atrocious. Another trophy would be a success, if Man City get 95 then they deserve it again.

I can see us having a major wobble at the beginning because of this bad Pre Season. Then January panic buying, finishing strongly and possibly Anfield winning us the UCL again. No prem for me without spending big again.

I think 6 times is correct. There are plenty on here that wax lyrical about how unlucky we were last season and also how we were actually going to win the league, also that winning the CL was the stepping stone required for future big trophies. So now that the season is about to start, surely not winning either Zthe CL or League Trophy must be deemed as failure. Surely if we don't sign anyone then we must be good enough already to challenge on all fronts?

I think winning the club world cup will justify missing out on the league by few points. Its our busiest season since 2005/ 2006.

I don’t think that will happen, but if it does that’s fine. Silverware is the measure of success in most fans eyes and the more we obtain the better. Overall I just want to see the players improve e. g. Keita adapt, Ox find his game again, Brewster make the step up etc.

That said, I’m of the opinion that we’ll win the league next year or retain the champions league. Let’s see how it plays out.

Most other seasons it would be success but now it would be failure. If that was City's season it would be classed as failure so we have to be juged the same now.

We are very close Ed and to me it will come down to small details. If Firmino of 2 seasons ago turns up or Keita/ Ox get back to their best I think we win the league.

{Ed025's Note - i think you have a good chance mark, but it may just come down to how lucky you are with injuries, city have a far better squad and can cope with losing a couple of big players whereas liverpool dont have that luxury mate..

That would be a failure!
Winning a domestic cup is not a success when your goal is the PL trophy.
Winning the PL would be a successful season, anything else is consolation for us now. The CL was brilliant and I love European nights but still, the PL is the holy grail. I really enjoyed last season and the boys were brilliant, gave everything, but just fell short. Bettering last season is a success in my eyes and the only way to do that is to win the PL title.

28 Jul 2019 13:22:44
Winning the CL again, winning the FA cup, and finishing 1st or 2nd in the PL will be success. I'd love the league over everything else but when the competition is as strong as City sometimes you have to settle for less.

19.) 28 Jul 2019
28 Jul 2019 13:32:11
It’s a decent season where you’d expect us to be in a regular year. Winning silverware and fighting on all fronts. We’re all desperate for the Premier league but not winning it cannot be deemed a failure.

Ed025 honest and fair as always, City squad is superior to Liverpool. Injuries to the front 3 and we are stuffed, City had plenty of goals and assists from 8 different players last season.
Our midfield is fine but I would like a top attacker who actually competes with the front 3 for a starting spot, but I understand those players cost silly money.
Lets hope Brewster and Origi can make a difference and give the front 3 a rest occasionally, as they need it, especially Sane.

{Ed025's Note - i agree greenflash, it would be a shame if you got an injury or 2 and it scuppered your chances, but maybe you will bring someone in as there is still plenty of time mate..

Winning the trophy every major side in Europe wants can in no way be deemed a failure. I'd have rathered the league myself, like most Lfc fans but failure? no way.

You get nowhere unless you define success and failure. It seems most posters think in terms of absolutes, so success is winning the league, and consequently failure is ending up last or at least relegated. If those are the yardsticks, than LFC improving every year on the field, improving revenues every year on the commercial side, and improving every year in terms of viewership, popularity and recognition, can hardly be called a failure. Veering clearly more towards success, if anything. I don't buy defining success as just achieving the goal that the club had set for itself. Of course every damned club wants to win the league. Even John Henry was ecstatic that we won the UCL, while admitting at the same time, that the fans would have preferred winning the EPL. All this is nothing even close to failure, in my opinion.
