Definitely open to being educated but I’m not sure I’d be very offended if I was Origi!

{Ed001's Note - then you do need to be educated. The reason it is so offensive is that the origin of the stereotype actually came from the slave era, when slavers would attach weights to the penis of the slaves who had tried to escape.}

After what's gone on recently with Bernard silva, and the other crap what dumb f£&k thought that would be OK,? And if identified will probably lose their season ticket.

That might be a perceived origin of that particular stereotype but every black man I know (and I know lots) actively promotes it. I see it more as a scouser is depicted with a curly wig or a Frenchman with a beret and garlic around his neck. All racial stereotyping but hardly offensive.
But then I suppose someone will have a different view and could be offended by all of those things.

I’m 5ft 7 and have been called short all of my life. I get banter from mates about how I can’t reach shelves in supermarkets etc. I also come from Liverpool and live in London so get the ‘watch your hubcaps’ jokes all the time. Should I be offended? Is that not racial stereotyping?

Don’t get me wrong I think racial abuse is abhorrent and has no place in society I’m just not sure in this case anyone has been racially abused. In fact as I said every black man I know would smile and happily agree with that banner.

I did find it a problem with the amount of defence Bernardo Silva got for not one but two incidents. Yes he was trying to joke with his friend but he used a harmful stereotype. People really look up to footballers and its not the best thing for society if you think you can make offensive jokes just because they do. I don't think it was Bernardos intention to harm anyone but the fact he and Pep kept defending it shows that they both need to be educated.

Is a racial stereotype still offensive if no one is actually offended by it?

Yes Virgil. A whole industry has grown around being offended on behalf of others even when no offence is intended or taken.

it’s unquestionably still offensive to have a banner with a mocked up photo of a player with his cock out.

I have genuinely no idea what those morons where thinking.

I can't believe people are actually trying to pass off these kind of stereotypes as 'harmless'. All stereotypes need to be eradicated, and that includes 'positive' stereotypes. The thing with stereotypes is that they are often reductive. A prominent example in sport would be black athletes being faster and stronger than their counterparts of different racial backgrounds.

It's considered positive because, well, we're saying that black athletes are better than non-black athletes in terms of physical strength, aren't we? However, this often means that people would then view those black athletes as merely strong and fast, rather than actually taking into account their entire game, like how great their technique is, or how intelligent their positioning and runs are.

So yes, maybe no one would be 'offended' by that stereotype, but it's often just as harmful as stereotypes that carry negative connotations, except that it works in a more insidious way.

I am sure the person that did it thought "every black man I know would smile and happily agree with that banner. " but didn't think of the many more that may find it offensive because its stereotyping . Stereotyping mean racist! full stop .

I do agree with Wassa on this. A banner of anyone with their cock out at a football match is offensive I’m just not sure it’s racially aggravated.
Was Gazza being racist because he pulled on Les Ferdinand’s penis for luck before every England game because he was impressed with how big it is? Was Les Ferdinand being racist for allowing him to?

Perhaps some black posters will correct me but I just don’t see the Origi banner as being racially aggravated. Offensive yes because a poster of any penis at a football match is one too many.

As for the Bernado Silva thing would anyone be up in arms if it had been a picture of De Bruyne and the milkybar kid? I’m not excusing what he did it was ill judged but if we are truly going to treat everyone equally then let’s get offended by any comparison of anyone of any race to any stereotype.

Everything is offensive and racist now. It's all sexist and stereotyping. Nobody mentions the football anymore, if it's not that it's VAR. We won 4-1 away in Europe and all the attention has gone on some idiot with a banner.

Didn’t Man Utd have a song about Lukaku on a similar subject and were told in no uncertain terms to stop it?
Even more stupid really that the Origi flag should have been made.

Becker’s pecker, I don’t think you can class scousers as a race nor short people. And neither have endured suffering and pain because of it. Just because your mates take the piss out of you, it doesn’t justify casual racism. If short people were kept as slaves and basically classed as second class citizens in recent history (and still today in some places), do you think the jokes would be that funny? It’s actually wound me up a bit that your mates calling you short is compatible to racism.

If you start making light of one issue, no matter how trivial it seems to you, the next time the boundaries may get pushed further and further.
