Given the boredom of the winter break, here is a question to ponder.

Which would you prefer

A) Neco Williams takes the RB position and becomes one of best RB in the country whilst Trent moves to midfield and becomes a great but not the best midfielder in the world.

B) Trent becomes the undisputed best RB in the world but Neco becomes a lovable squad player but never quite makes it to the top.

of the 2 options then B.

Option B is already a reality. So I suppose option A. That said I really think trent will be a great player wherever he plays.

I think trent is going to stay at RB though. I remember Gerrard playing at rb when he first burst onto the scene. He only played there for a few games then took the step to MF. It seems to me that trent is getting very used to (and very good at) playing as a full back. I think we'll know the truth of it when we get a change of manager and a change of system. He plays so far up the pitch, he's almost a rw atm.

Williams looks good but let's see him against some big teams before we lose the plot over him.

Everyone needs to just wait it out on Williams. Looks promising but that’s as far as it goes for now.

Trent is a sensational talent and has shown it for 2 years at the very top level of the game.

Jones and Williams could be another trent, but could just as easily be another woodburn too.

Our system is built around attacking threat from the fullbacks, and Trent is off the charts at creating scoring opportunities in our current team, so option B. We have enough good midfielders to need him there.

There is not need to get so hung up on what will happen in the future.

Right now Trent is the perfect right wing back for our system and Neco is an 18 year old kid.

Who knows what will happen. There could be a serious injury to either player? Or maybe Klopp leaves in 2024 and the new manager decides he wants to play a 4-4-2 with Trent as a right midfielder. You can't even hope to predict the future in a sport of so many variables.

We've got the best right back in the world, and we've got an understudy with a good attitude and a lot of potential. Don't worry so much about the future that you forget to enjoy the present.

Shaq? You're already writing Woodburn off?

He has time on his side is clearly gifted with some natural talent.

On the original question: I don't think that if Trent moved to midfield and was just "good" that he'd stay there. He would only be considered for a midfield slot if he was absolutely amazing there, otherwise, what is the point? As he is already absolutely amazing where he is playing now.

I think a lot will depend on when Henderson starts to slow down as he gets older. No decision needs to be made for a long while. Both Fabinho and Philip Lahm only made the change to become midfielders in their mid twenties - I think Lahm was even later.

I’m not writing Woodburn off but he was hyped to similar levels and has struggled badly since. Part of the problem is how much pressure we put on youngsters by constantly labelling them the next big thing.

It's definitely not over for Woodburn. I reckon he'll make it in the Premier league. He's a full international already.

I can only see that transition happening when or if our team has to change our style of play and we no longer get the best of his quality on offer at FB. Fabinho made the move into midfield in his very early 20s while lahm did only towards the end of his career. There aren't many examples of players getting dramatically improved going from FB to CM that I can instantly think of but I might be wrong. Gareth Barry I can think off top of my head, alaba, guerreiro, kimmich recently in bundesliga too but none have really shown much more to offer than they did at FB. I'd love to hear other examples.
