Just for fun, which ex-players do you think for underrated for us in their time?

For example, Lucas was criminally underrated but we all know that haha.

Another one that stuck out for me was Ragnar Klavan. Like he was not a world beater but he did a decent job for us.

Klavan is the perfect fourth choice centre back.

I thought Arbeloa was underrated.

I would say Benayoun was fairly underrated as well.

We a few players in the mould of Klavan or Lucas would do us the world of good at the moment. Then again, we have Phillips knocking round and we refuse to play him, no matter how badly Matip or Gomez play.

Steve Finnan for me, he was a genuine class above. The most consistent and balanced right back I'd ever seen. Admittedly I was born in 1992, so I have a small list of right backs to consider. But, Finnan was always Mr consistent, yet no one really talks about him.

I wouldn’t say Finnan was underrated though. Everyone liked Finnan.

I’m going to go outside the box here and say Hypia and Alonso.

I think both are highly thought of but in different LFC eras they would potentially be remembered in the world class brackets.

Finnan was the best left back we had since Steve nicol
Pitty injuries got to him I lost count the amount of rbs Benitez brought in to displace him.

Aurelio and Bellamy in his second stint too. I also thought Meireles was really good. I can't believe we sold him after buying Charlie Adam.

Arbeloa was ridiculously underrated. Finnan and Lucas too.

Aurelio, Dirk "ethic" Kuyt, Benayoun and Maxi Rodriguez were pretty good.

John Arne Riise never got the plaudits he deserved for his volleying technique from cleared corners. His defending might have been average though.

Ragnar just for his name!

Ronnie whelan. Super player, had a bit of everything. Score a goal (and would invariably score important goals) good passer, good defensively and aggressive.
In fact everything we could do with today!

Litmanen for me. Classy player.

Aurelio. What a player he was and it's sad his career was dogged by injuries. He was an actual genius.

I could be remembering it wrong but didn't Meireles force his way out of the club to go to Chelsea?

{Ed002's Note - He asked for a transfer - that is not forcing his way out.}

Dirk Kuyt, not the most technical player in the world but a true workhorse and he could score. Imagine him with Trent on the right?

Ahh, got it. Thanks for the clarification Ed002.

Mascerano (? )

Transformed into a world class player under Rafa.
Not spoken about enough.

Kuyt, absolute work horse, never gave up

Aurelio, classy player - real shame with injury

Finnan - absolutely a solid player, hardly ever put a foot wrong

Arbeloa - again a very solid player for us

Rob Jones - class rb, real shame about his injuries, was easily England's best rb in his time.

Agree about Rob Jones. Gary Neville wouldn't have won half of his caps if Jones hadn't have picked up his injuries. Now owns children's nurseries, by all accounts.

I agree finnan was an excellent player and very underrated. I really liked litmanen but injuries obviously didn't help him out at all.

Erik meijer.

Jay dub, did you ever watch Finnan play? Or is it you just can’t tell the difference between your left and your right?

To be fair, Rob Jones was really valued by fans at the time he was playing - he had massive, massive potential but his career was stuffed through no fault of his own.

Agree with Aurelio, Kuyt, Bennayoun and particularly Lucas who showed remarkable strength of character to stick with it.

My addition is Hendo. Underrated for about 80% of his time with us. The only time he has really been appreciated was the PL winning season and everybody who played for us was ‘bigger up’ that season.

All great choices. Yossi Benayoun for me. Brilliant player.
