Thanks Ed001.

This preseason was a chance for a reset and I have spent the last two months feeling positive about the coming season. Over the last few weeks that positivity has evaporated and I am now not confident of a top 4 finish. Klopp was excellent in the first part of his tenure, but I am starting to loss faith. I can’t believe I’m saying this but am starting to question whether he is the right man for the job?.

{Ed001's Note - it is a worry, he does seem to have lost his way tactically.}

Thanks for the review Ed. Was waiting for it and it is a quality review.

As for the system, I completely agree with you. Initially, I thought that we were completely imbalanced when playing it towards the end of last season but was adopting a 'wait and see' approach to see if we can iron out the issues. But it is safe to say that the system just isn't working and would not work. I can see the theoretical framework of it but it is impossible to translate that fully onto the pitch.

I'm with you and we should just go back to our tried and tested 4-3-3 with TAA in the deep play-making role.

{Ed001's Note - thank you. It took a lot longer than I intended sorry.}

Great article ED01. Thanks. What's so odd about this hybrid role for Trent, is how it stops the moment he goes off. That tells you how limiting this system is. The back up players (Gomez, Matip) can't play it, so we're 1 injury to Trent away from abandoning this approach.

It's very frustrating because i genuinely think we have the best strikeforce in the league.

{Ed001's Note - our attack is excellent, but they need to be given a chance. If you keep conceding silly goals, heads drop and then things get worse.}

Brilliant review again, Ed001 - thanks again.

I guess there is some solace in the fact that Big Virg is looking a lot better than last season. I get the feeling we're really going to need him back at his best!

{Ed001's Note - we certainly are going to need him, no matter what system we play the defence does rely heavily on him.}

From what I’ve seen in pre-season we play the hybrid role no matter who is playing RB. I’m sure I’ve seen Tsimi and robbo play centrally in that friendly we had Trent start as the CDM. Seems to be more about flooding the midfield.

Anyways I’ve done this topic to death now. I’m shifting my mindset to how we can perfect it. If we can dominate the hall well enough and close the spaces in transition then I can see the reward. It is so high risk tho, but the reward could suffocate teams.

Do you think klopp just used it against bayern because Bradley was unavailable and he still wanted trent in midfield and wouldve put trent in the 6 like the previous 3 games otherwise?

I didn't have the opportunity to watch the game. You have me worried now ed. This system, when it works, trent will have 2-3 assists a game. But if it doesn't work we will be conceding 2-3 goals a game. At our best a couple of years ago, teams would try and overload trent but, our mids covered well for him, for the most part. And it worked. Well!
What fo you make of our efforts to try and bring in a DM and new CB?

{Ed001's Note - I don't think it matters about transfers while we play this way. It simply won't work.}

ed1 - you're right about personnel. It grates me a little that there is so much noise about a CDM and a CB as if there is a player in the world who is going to cover the 30-40 yard gaping holes we have all over the pitch.

{Ed001's Note - exactly.}
