Great article Ed.

I remember watching those two together and you are right, I didn't realise just how short the partnership was.

They were brilliant though.

Cheers.

{Ed001's Note - in my head before I started my research, those two had been the Liverpool pairing throughout my childhood. I was shocked when I found that it was completely false. And thank you, glad you enjoyed.}

Great piece, Ed. Thanks for that. Lawrenson scored our 5th goal against Everton, but no one remembers as somebody scored 4!

{Ed001's Note - he was a great player, he is unlucky to have played next to an even greater one so he tends to get a bit forgotten about in general. Even things like Heysel he picked up a bad injury in the game but no one remembers for obvious reasons. He often talks about how he remembers little except waking up the next day still in his kit and there being armed police at the foot of his bed. Roy Evans had to smuggle him out of the hospital in the end!

And thank you Rome, really glad you liked it.}

How spoilt was we back then? I always remember Lawro being so quick. Great piece btw ed1.

{Ed001's Note - thank you so.}

Just missed out on seeing him. Great article as usual Ed. Much appreciated- and keep them coming.

{Ed001's Note - thank you mate, always appreciated from yourself, a proper author!}

Thanks Ed. The backline we had back then must have been the most versatile ever. Nicol could play anywhere in the outfield and would exel in any position he was played in. Gillespie and Lawro could play anywhere along the back 4. Hansen I really believe could make a top class midfielder and even Brucie was thought talented enough to play outfield. Even Jim Beglin could play centre back or full back. Great players. My dad often credits Lawrenson catching Kevin Keegan after giving him about a 15 yard head start as the reason Keegan decided to hang up his boots. I don't know if this is the case tho but his pace was unbelievable. When I look back to the 86 cup final Hansen looks nervous but Nicol running up and down the line all game and Lawrp being so calm at the back where phenomenal.

{Ed001's Note - Lawro played midfield a lot as well mate.}

Of course yeah sorry ed.

{Ed001's Note - great players can do that, look at Szobo, I reckon you could play him anywhere and he would do you a job.}

Best centre-back pairing i have ever seen, bar none.

Jocky is quite rightly held up as an all-time great, but Lawro belongs in that bracket as well imo. His versatility counted against him in that regard, but what a player.

Stick him in midfield alongside John Wark in 84/ 85 and we win the title instead of the bitters.

Versatility seems to be gone now almost. So many rigid players who just get stuck with one position. I wonder if its due to lack of game intelligence or if they have been coached to within an inch of losing all their independent thoughts. I remember a game where even Barnsie was played as a marauding full back. I think it was against Aston Villa and they where so surprised they couldn't get to grips with them. Now everyone seems to just have a specialised position.

I’ve never seen a team as versatile as this one. With the exception of Alison virg and probably konate every other player seems to be able to play multiple positions.
