Any chance we might be interested in Weimann if/when Villa go down at the end of the season? Still just 21, loads of potential, low center of gravity, pacy, good passing, good finishing, great work rate, and excellent movement. I know you said there was interest from Young Boys earlier, but any you aware of any other links to the player since? Thanks!

Please tell me is assiadi leaving in the summer or will he get a chance?
I hope he gets a chance

I think those youtube clips got the best of everyone. I have watched him severally at the afcon and the few games he played for Liverpool. the skill is there, but he tends to drift out of games too quickly and he still lacks end product after the fancy stepovers. maybe he is struggling to adapt in england but iit looks like rodgers doesn't rate him

Of course rodgers rates him otherwise he wouldn't have signed him doh

I'm sure some of the people on here will say Kenny signed him if he flops.

dont worry there are enough names already on KK list who flopped.
assaidi will be added in BR list.

For 20 years all Everton have wanted is to overtake Liverpool. We've often been occupied by bigger ambitious achievements. Now Liverpool fans just want to finish above the Blue noses. Aim higher lads FFS they'll be fighting for relegation again in a couple of years, and we will be back in Europe amongst the elite. We are Liverpool incase you forgot it

Moyes is tipped to moving in the Summer, that might reset Everton but they've done well. They seem to make a real combative effort every three years and struggle for a season or two before the next respectable charge. A bit like Newcastle towards the end of last season and being completely inconsistent the season later.

Where as we've been struggling since Benitez's last season, Kenny looked like he had the answers and added silverware but FSG weren't happy and wanted to go in a different direction. Now Rodgers (the 4th manager in as many seasons) looks like he's getting the players on the same page, we've got some players in form and some out of form, but one season is too soon to expect everything to be red and rosy. Top 4 I think was always a step too far this season. As long as we keep showing signs of individual and overall improvement then I think we've got things to be positive about.

BCDI.

We've completely lost our way.

In years gone by, the focus was always on winning the next game.

Now we play weakened teams, lose to league 1 clubs and end up wondering why we're short on confidence.

What Liverpool fan only wants to finish above the small team from across the park? I for one want to finish as high as possible and the bitters are only an after thought for a fleeting second. We should be aiming for European qualification at the very least. We are heading in the right direction and six points from our next 2 games could rejuvenate our squad. Especially after dropping 4 points against in our last 2 games. Remember that who you support and finishing ahead of the bitters is not a cup final.

I know there have been a lot of tributes to Carra over the last few days. I wanted to make one more point having read a lot in the papers.
For me Carra goes down as the best defender we've ever had. He's not played in the best of Liverpool sides (Emlyn, Hansen, Lawro all played in great sides), yet at one point he was one of the best in Europe. He's also the only one out of all these players who never played for another club. He made his league debut in a red shirt, and will play his last game in red. Other better players (McManaman and Owen) were lured by other clubs as they did not maybe get the success they craved. However, staying with your club through the good times and the bad speaks massive volumes. He is the last of the mohicans (SG too), what an era to produce 2 all time greats for the club.
G

I have to agree. I really didn't think of it that way.
Imagine where we'd be had Stevie and Carra not been Liverpool players at all.

Wake up!!

We have no chance of 4th! And we will soon be out of Europa lg soon!

Stop talking about 4th for at least 5yrs!

I don't think we'll get 4th. But I don't think it will be 5 years before we're in top 4. And nor should we accept that

I don't think that we'll quite make top 4 this season, to be honest I didn't really expect it this season but I fully believe that we will be back right up there as from next season, probably higher than 4th.

J

In all likelyhood, looking at the matches teams have left, we'll finish 6th this season. Which is 2 up on last year.

But this is football and everything is not so black and white. The team is playing very well at the moment and we must support them to finish as high as possible. The reality is we are 12 points behind with 39 points to play for and a game in hand. The reality is it is possible. Very difficult but definitely possible. No expectation but there is hope. Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal will drop points but we will need to get 33/34 out of those 39 points I reckon to clinch the spot and that is a tough ask but not impossible.

also your opinion is not fact. You could have posted on the Southhampton page to wake up, you won't beat City 3 1 before Saturdays game. Doesn't make it fact.

Bottom line is the team is playing very well. If we cut out the mistakes, we could do very well indeed. There is a lot still to be dertimined this season and I for one, along with many others on here, will not give up on that fourth spot just yet.

Davey Sulls

To the original poster I hope that you are a troll. If not you need to contemplate the definition of supporter as you are too negative to be a Liverpool fan. 5 years is a very long time in football, take our last 5 years we have came runner up in both the league and FA cup, won the league cup and lost to the Europa league winners in the semi's as well as changed our manager several times and nearly went into administration. I believe that as long as we don't change our manager then you are going to be proved wrong with your pessimistic prediction. We are losing Carra in the summer and Stevie will go within the next few seasons but what we have proved is that our academy is providing players that can go straight into our squad as they are taught to play the same way as BR wants our 1st team playing. Wisdom, Sterling, Suso, Yesil, Texiera, Nacho, McLaughlin are all under twenty and should all be full internationals within 5 years. So within 5 years my prediction is Rodgers will win his first trophy at the helm of our great club.

I don't know why fans are saying we have been in transition for 20 years, infact we have won more trophys in 20 years then anyother club except Man united. Big mistake was when Benitez left we appointed hodgson instead of top coach if at that time we had appointed top coach then today situation might have been different.

Its easy to say such things but how would it have mattered

With Rafa we still thought we were a chance of a league title. Hopes faded.
We then tried to consolidate, almost like damage control. Hence Roy and even Kenny.
Not until we signed B. Rodgers, did the club show any real intent on rebuilding from the ground up.

Red7.

11 Feb 2013 09:07:24
Red7 we didn't need any rebuilding when Rafa left because he left a very healthy team only Alonso was missing we just needed to bring 1-2 players to continue pushing for 19th league title instead appointing Hodgson showed massive lack of ambition and our players started leaving one by one if at that time we would have appointed top coach then we would not only retain our best players but add 1-2 and we would have been back on track.

Just been on the city site and I was half expecting to see tumble weeds float across my screen, the sites dominated by other clubs fans and there are hardly any city fans there. We here sometimes call some fans here fickle but at least they care about the club. The city fans don't seem to defend their team at all.

Lil Red

They are loyal fans. They attended week-in-week-out when they dropped two divisions. Its just they haven't as many glory hunters as Liverpool but they're catching-on.

DaveyBootle

Why on earth would there be glory hunter Liverpool fans, for a mid-table yet city but the league? Got it wrong there mate

Liverpools so called glory hunters have been around a very long time don't you know we have not won the premiership title, so much for the title glory hunter. ynwa

I'd feel very sorry for any 'new' glory hunters choosing Liverpool, or at least get their head's tested.

If we had a bunch of sado-masochists suddenly join us who enjoy brief highs and miserable lows then that may be more like it ;)

But joking aside, I know a handful of City fans, and all of them have supported their team prior to the millions. Afterwards they didn't get all big time charlie, they were humble, almost embarassed by the money they were throwing around. Endearing almost.

And for anyone bothered I lived in Salford Quays for a few years, overwhelming majority of Manchester born footy fans were city fans, and that was in the shadow of OT!

misterdrumz

P. S. Used to enjoy giving the home (not local by any stretch) fans the wrong directions on my walk back from work, always wished the visiting CL teams luck, haha. bitter? me?

It's a pivotal summer ahead, despite the league position hopefully we'll show some real ambition to kick us onto the next level.

It seems like the likely departure's will be Reina, Coates, Assaidi, Carroll and Carra retiring. I think we'll fetch around £40 mil for those players, but we'll need some funds from the owners if we're to replace with top quality.

I still think we'll look at a typical number 10, as I feel Coutinho will be used in rotation with Sterling/Ince/Downing out wide. Ideally we'll target somebody like Eriksen, negotiate a good fee then convince the player to join. It'll be a tough ask, without champions league, which is very unlikely now. But certainly not out of the question. That would leave Henderson without a place, but we all know its a squad game and a long season. Gerrard has been epic this head, but can be injury prone so he can cover there.

I think Ince will sign, as it's obvious we're still keen. There will be interest elsewhere, which will drive the price up. He is however down to 12 months on his contract and we do have a clause, don't think it's 35% but definitely 20% or so. He'll be a great signing in my view, with impact from the start or bench, which we have been lacking.

The defence is due to change dramatically. A fit Kelly may be thrust straight into centre half duty, with Wisdom operating as back up in both CB/RB positions. We'll look to sign a strong centre half to replace Carra and if Skrtel stays it'll be ideally someone who can slot into midfield, as cover/rotation for Lucas at times. We need an experienced left back to support Enrique and then address the goalkeeping situation.

I honestly have no idea how much he'll fetch or where he'll go, but it's fairly clear than Reina is off. I don't think anyone has an accurate idea of who we'll target. But as repeated a lot on this site, it's a good time to be shopping for a keeper. Lots of talent out there, waiting for a move to a bigger club/stronger league. It's a vital position in any team (perhaps excluding Barca), so we must get it right.

I hope it's 4 in and 4/5 excluding fringe players out in the summer. No massive overhaul, just money spent wisely on players we've been scouting extensively and will hopefully come in as first choices during the window.

Papa G

Who's gunna pay 40 m for all those players. Your deluded. Any carra's retiring

40 Million what is that Roubles?

Get Real

If ever there was a time for quality and not quantity, the summer is it!

Raoul

Isn't Carroll agreed at £17 mil? Coates and Reina will likely fetch £13 mil and Assaidi a multipack of monster munch. Alright I mis-calculated and though I'd added Downing, although that wouldn't help my cause.

Papa G

10 Feb 2013 22:08:53
Carrol - £17-ish million to West Ham (loan-to-buy), Reina could easily fetch around £10 million, Coates about £9 million (Napoli are interested) and Assaidi for under £5 million.

That is around £40 million. I don't want to speculate about outgoings, but to say those four can't go for that price is madness from fickle fans and Wind-up merchants.

Jolly Red

Being as we play 4-3-3, where would you play a traditional playmaker? Because the central mid in a 4-3-3 has to support the front three.

Just because west ham have an "option" to buy Carrol for £17 mil does'nt mean that they will take that option. let's be realistic here, he is not worth that amount, and the form he has been in, why would they pay that?

11 Feb 2013 01:54:11
My understanding is that it isn't so much an option as a pre-determined course for Carroll. West Ham stay up (if) and the exchange happens. I believe some sort of payment would be payed to Liverpool if West Ham don't hold their part of the bargain at the end.

Jolly Red

If suarez is sold in the summer. then forget TOP 4.
no ways we going to get that.
we will buy another 2-3 players. and they will take another 2-3 years to settle in and by the time they hit the peak. bayern, real, barca, will coming calling and they will go.
average players will remain with us.
and good talent will eventually go.

if we need top 4. next season.
we need our best players with us. and add some more quality players.
never ever. under 21 players have won the CL for any club. or else you must be messi or xavi type.

Didn't balotelli win the CL at 19/20? He ant no messi.

Evening all/Ed's, just watched the " be careful what you wish for " video about Reina on the Liverpool Videos page, I would like to think that maybe it made a few people who have criticised Reina lately think! But i'm pretty sure his detractors will still ignore it and wait to pounce on any slight errors he may well make somewhere along the line, shame really because a Reina playing at 70% of his level is still better than most and people will see that when he leaves.

As I have stated many times before, it took us 5 keepers and around 8 years to find a top one, let's hope we don't have to wait that long next time around.

Love the site but can't help thinking maybe a weekly or daily report/roundup would really help the site as it wld make life a lot easier 4 readers but I appreciate it wld mean more work from you guys so its just an idea
Thanks a lot for the site {Ed002's Note - It has been tried and does not work.}

I used to love when yous did it ed. You hear all the news then you could discuss it {Ed002's Note - We didn't do it - others did. It stopped due to the abuse they got.}

10 Feb 2013 19:15:04
Eds, do you reckon Coutinho will start tomorrow night and if not do you think he'll come on as a sub? {Ed002's Note - We were given an opportunity by WonderDogSparky (On Twitter) earlier today to learn about the team selection process at Liverpool - that is the best guide we have seen so far as to what will happen tomorrow.}

Gary Neville correct stop Evertons left side functioning and you got real chance of stopping them

Surely if it was that easy everybody would do it.

I don't suppose he mentioned how to stop utd?
ThePoint

Its obvious how to stop United, go watch United vs Southampton from the other week.

Its true though stop Everyon's left and Sideshow Bob and they don't have anything else.

United v Southampton the other week? They didn't stop then did they as united still won. If every team stops us like that & we win I would be happy.

Gary Neville should change his name to Ron Obvious.

With Carragher retiring, lots of people have spoken about the need to replace him with another CB. Some people have obviously forgotten we are also losing an inspirational vice-captain. Not only do we have to replace him as a player but as a leader. BR has spoken about the need for players to be more vocal and take ownership and leadership but who will it be? Reina has captained us regularly in SG's and JC's absences, but he looks as if he's on his way out. Suarez, for me, is not ideal. His spoken English is still lacking and communication may be difficult. Lucas did it under Dalglish too but I also think he's too quiet in terms of being vocal on the pitch. Agger is probably the most ideal choice but he's not the most vocal either. Could BR give the responsibility to a new signing? I think this announcement when it's made in pre-season will be interesting.

Swifty

VC will be Reina if he stays and Suarez if he doesn't, but there is a real problem in terms of leadership qualities in the sqaud

Red Ollie

Agger no doubt

Definitely going to be a problem. None of BRs signings look like leaders, he doesn't seem to go for strong players who are very vocal. Hopefully players like Agger, Glen and Lucas can step up to the mark and help Stevie

I can't see us getting 4th (sincerely hope I'm wrong!) However if we don't, next target in Leauge has to be to overtake Blues

Blaz {Ed002's Note - So the abuse of the Editors has started again - quite frankly I would expect fewer and fewer posts to make it through for a while thanks to this poster - today called "Blaz", but previously trolling the site under other names. And it is unfortunately the decent Liverpool supporters who yet again suffer because of some of the brain-dead rubbish like "Blaz". Whilst it is obvious to everyone that he is a w*nker - it's remains a great pity his father wasn't.}

What results people want with man united and everton? going to hurt me to say but aUnited win would be perfect for any chance we have of catching fourth place :-) John a

Everton winning doesn't change how many point we are from 4th

Id go with an everton win or atleast a draw

But if we concentrated on just winning oyr games from the beginning of theseason it wouldn't matter

I would have rather had Spurs getting beat yesterday. Everton are not in 4th spot.

Watching games at various grounds I'm so glad anfield has none of the claptrap slogans plastered around it. 'Holt End 12th man' is laughable as are all the cringeworthy offerings around the country. FSG just say no when tempted by this shameless trend.

Joe Hart to Liverpool in the summer. get your money on it.

I'd sell my house and sleep in a cardborard box for it. But that would not pay for the deal and unfortunately I can't see it happening. We may be in for Swansea's keeper.

Joe hart is David James mk2.

To M

We haven't been in transition for 24 years like you say

We at a point was finishing 2nd in the league and winning the CHampions league etc so I would say we peaked again around that period

Since his last season in charge we have had to try overcome all the stuff our club has been through inc players on high wages etc

We didn't win the league when we peaked but we shouldve

Our transitional period has been since FSG took over but we finally now have the stability, plan and healthier financial footing than we did a few years ago

Hope that answers your question

10 Feb 2013 15:51:37
Liverpool is no better then last year and this all talk of transition is b*******! Look at chelsea they changed their old guard and still haven't slip to Liverpool level or look at Man united in 25 years they have change and chop players but yet haven't dropped Liverpool standard the truth is neither kenny or Rodgers spent FSG money wisely.

Allen or Borini or Assaidi or Sahin (loan) these players have coast Liverpool more then 35M and haven't contributed anything this season I repeat anything its totaly waste of our owners money. The days of transition is over in modern footy wake up excuses after excuses don't win you matches our owners have provided enough money to achieve top4 but our managers have let them down first kenny now Rodgers can anybody tell Rodgers has spent money properly. Since Rodgers has become our manager he has spent more then 60M and we are no where near top teams infact teams above us have dropped their standards and still we are struggling to catch them next year all these teams will massively improve and our story won't be different the fans like you will find other excuses. If football matches could be won by excuses then we would be sitting top of the table.

Wow! Do not read the first reply. Comparing our situation to chelsea's is pointless. They can pay double the wages we do and nearly attract any player they want. United's transition occurred when it was just the good old top 4, now the league is much more competitive. It's just muppets like you who keep us in transition. let's sack him, let's sack him, let's sell him.
derryred

Young players take time to bed into a team, the foreign ones even more so because they are used to a different style of play. Give them a chance to show what they can do instead of writing them off, sick off all the p***ks that don't give any backing to the players or manager!

10 Feb 2013 19:37:34
nonsense. just give half of the money KK or Br spend to any other side. or everton. they would have won the league.
lets be honest

At least we didn't get relegated during are hard times picking up the odd trophy on the way. Tommy Irish Red

Sturridge

10 Feb 2013 14:02:15
Watching any caroll in this game he looks so poor the worst thing is his lack of urgency he looks like he don't wanna be there most of the time. I'm not a Carroll hater because I thought he started doing well for us last season late on but playing like that you would never get into the Liverpool side

London red

He was actually busting a gut;-)

kidmillions

He's quite simply, rubbish. How we ever paid £35 million for him is a mystery!?

10 Feb 2013 13:50:13
Just read an article saying Newcastle would like to resign Carroll, they screwed us once the ain't screwing us twice. Much rather he went to West Ham for the said agreement.
If those magpies really want him we should take Krul and Tiote.
Si

I agree but if we were to say resign Torres for between 10-20 million which is all he's worth then it's sort of the same thing, they both got sold for way too much so that would make any resale value way below what was paid.
We will never get our money back no matter where he goes unless from now till the end of the season he scores a hatrick in every game and gets back in the England squad!
Paul the red

My take on the Carroll situation, is that he is a young lad and LFC have a responsibility to him as a footballer with a future. We baught him, we payed over the odds, he did not work out and that's as mush Liverpool's fault as his. let's get him back to Newcastle if they want him, let's loose money, let's move on and let's thank AC and wish him all the best for his career. We are a football club before we are a buisness.

Now it was the change in manager that killed him unfortunately. In the end he was a big money mistake. Hope he proves me wrong but even the runs he makes are poor.
derryred

I think Carroll was a panic buy IMO - nothing against him; he can be unplayable but that's not his normal performance (he played v well when he beat us whilst playing for Newcastle).

I believe we wanted Gomez (from Batern) or Lorente (Bilbao) but the teams would not sell. So we bought caroll.

I hope Newcastle don't get him on the cheap; especially when they told us to accept the loss (well Pardew did).

I do hope Andy stays injury free and comes good for someone (as long as its not in direct competition against us).

Afternoon Ed's

Just a quick one on Michael Ngoo, I watched him a lot with the kids the last couple of years and always thought he looked very awkward and a bit of a donkey in truth posing the question what the hell did we see in him but I have to say I could be wrong, seen the goals he's scored for Hearts since we sent him on loan go's to show he wants it.

I was impressed by the different types of goals from the sheer strength to his classy finishes during the 2-2 draw. smacked the crossbar twice as well and the technique was'nt bad on either effort, considering he's getting actual game time and gaining a bag full of actual experience against men instead of boy football do you think we'd offer him a chance next year or cash in? I only say this becuase of Rodgers preferred style of player although the lad looks intelligent enough to mix it up.
Cheers for your thoughts.
Neil

I think no matter how good you are you need to play in pressurised situations (histile or big crowds etc. ) 1st team football gives you that and can make or break a player.

He seems to be the type that needed this; here's hoping he does well (either from he comes back to us or we sell him for lots of cash) :o)

Hoola

Crouch was an awkward 'lanky' rather than donkey type player and he didn't do too badly for us, did he?
Hope Michael does make it, if not for us, for a good side.

Hi eds. Top site as always. A question: do you have any idea what sort of minimum target was set to Brendan Rodgers when he took over, league position, cup runs and so on? With us going out of FA and League Cup, and an uphill task for fourth I, for one, think BR's position is not as secure as it looks (though Europa Cup is still going). let's not forget King Kenny got the boot last year for a lot less. When, realistically, would his position be under threat?
Or is this year a write-off and regardless how well/bad we do in terms of football on the pitch, the real football test will start come next season?
Thanks a lot.
GALF {Ed002's Note - The target is the same as it was - Champions League football. Failing to do that is not something Dalglish got the "boot" for.}

What were the main reasons dalgish was sacked for then ed? {Ed002's Note - Performances were one issue, but Suarez and dumb actions of December 21 was what pushed it over the edge..}

As much as I love Kenny and defend him here

He has one obvious problem which can be both a blessing and a curse

He defends his players to the end as he did with Suarez and that was a big mistake

Would love to still see Kenny manage the squad but alas those days are unfortunately over

The summer will be very busy for Liverpool in regards to the transfer market. My source doesn't get much wrong as has ties very close to Liverpool. Andy carrol will be rejoining newcastle, but on the cheap, not the figures quoted. The deals that brendan rodgers will try to get are as follows:-

Hatem Ben Arfa plus £5 = Andy Carrol
Thomas Ince = £7m
Mario Gomez + £25 = Luis Suarez
Julian Lescott = £9m
Ricky Lambert = £12m

Lescott god help us

Far too much to drink last night I reckon :-
Ben Arfa - WHY
Ince - will cost far more than 7m in the summer.
Lescott - too old and not good enough
Gomez - good player, but not worth the 25m you have estimated him at.
Lambert - Average 31 year old - may as well keep AC, who is only just turned 24 and still a got to fulfil his full potential.

Come up with believable alleged targets when the alcohol has worn off.

Hi Eds,
What do you all think about how Ngoo is doing at Hearts currently? Three goals in four games isn't a bad result but is that really more an indication of the weakness of Scottish football rather than how good young Michael is? Just wanted to see your opinions if you have a chance. {Ed052's Note - He is doing far far better than I expected. The two worries I always had for him were: a)whether he could actually score goals consistently becuase he missed simple chances for the reserves, and, b) whether he could bully top older players like he does reserves. He is doing both things at the minute, and, should he continue to do that then he will no doubt get a chance at Liverpool, or perhaps a loan to a better team - a lower Prem team etc}

PL reserves is more competitive than SPL he was better off going birmingham or something

I'd just like to say ill be very surprised if we do get top four this season, I've said all along that we shouldn't expect to much this season, my prediction for us this season was top 8 in league, we should be higher but silly mistakes have cost us too much unfortunately! I did expect more in the cup competitions but it wasn't meant to be after two horror shows against Oldham and Swansea! Europa league is going to be difficult for us! It's next season when I do expect to be in the top 4 and to maybe win a cup! Hopefully! Rodgers has made signings which I'm happy with! All that's needed now is in the summer we need to strengthen our squad depth and hopefully Rodgers will get the right players for us! It's a big summer that could make or brake us I think!

James e cornett

As long as you're happy, lad, that's all that matters.

Hope for the best prepare for the worst

Just hope that Rodgers makes signings Your Happy! with; as I don't know what we'll do, if we lose you :- (

Two players I believe can turn into stars in the premier leugue are Christian Beneteke (21) and Jordan Spence (21). i'd like to see us have a look at spence next season. The boy is from west hams academy, a centre back and 6 foot 3. I believe he will be better than john terry.
Edd001 have you seen jordan spence, he is a real gem?

Big Al {Ed001's Note - I have seen him, he didn't play well in the games I saw, but a lot of that was down to his defensive partner, I thought. I would like to see him alongside a decent partner. As for Terry, I have never been a fan of Terry, if he wasn't getting away with shirt pulls, and other niggly fouls, constantly, he would be shown up. Nothing special for me, just gives his all for his club, which endears him to fans.}

Agree with ed001 on terry committed organiser at best it was the combination of carvalho/gallas & makele/essien & the system played under mourinho that made terry look good.

Ed001, I saw that you made some comments about Arsenal's academy a while back and talking about the media hype surrounding Arsenal's current youth crop being unjustified or words to that effect. I was just wondering what your take on Liverpool's current youth crop? Are there certain players that are being held in high regard by the club? {Ed001's Note - yes there are, a number I would not really count as being produced by our academy (similar to Sterling) as they were brought in from elsewhere virtually ready. But we do have the likes of Dunn, Coady and Rossiter breaking through. Our academy has taken huge strides in recent years, in the next four or five years, we will really start getting the benefits of it.}

10 Feb 2013 11:35:04
Surely we are already seeing the benefit of it Ed?
Or do you expect the quality of the youngsters we bring through to improve year on year?
Cheers mate!
WelshBoyDave {Ed001's Note - I was meaning when the likes of Rossiter come through into the team, but yes I do expect the quality to improve.}

In your opinion ed, how does it compare to the likes of Arsenal, United, Southampton, La Masia and Madrid?

ChrisMiz {Ed001's Note - Arsenal's is not in the same league, theirs has faltered. United's is also losing in that respect, they need to make changes to improve the quality coming through. Madrid's just struggles due to the lack of opportunity given to youngsters to get in their first team. To me, I would have to say that currently Southampton and La Masia are slightly ahead of us, but over the next couple of years I would expect us to catch those two up. Villa deserve a mention as well, theirs is a fantastic academy.}

Really interesting post; thanks all and Ed's for your input.

We draw with City and everyone thinks Rodgers is the messiah, well Southampton just thrashed City! We will finish below 8th, Kenny had a terrible season but he was still better in the league and got to 2 domestic cup finals and won one!

Rodgers is not the messiah he is a very poor manager!

I wonder why you haven't signed your post. If we all compare one result against another then football would be a simple game. If I was you I would have a glass or two of wine with your lunch just then we may get a little sense.

Mighty reds

No one has called Rodgers the Messiah - he is a young man that has been in football a long time and appears to want to play football the way it was meant to be played - he may be successful, he may not - but he will be in football for another 20 years, and I personally hope a lot of it is at Anfield.

John B

People actually agree with this? City have beaten a lot of teams considering they are second in the league so to compare the two is ludicrous especially as if not for a stupid mistake we would have also won. Your saying were going to finish below 8th based on what?also no one claimed he wa the messiah although he's done well so far and he's obviously still learning. We should be top 4 if it wernt for our silly mistakes

Londonred

Arguing that Brendan is a poor manager simply because Southampton beat Manchester City borders on lunacy.

Red Owl

If you watched the game then you can see how well we played.
Nothing more needs to be said.
Paul the red

Well in that case phil parkinson of bradford city is the real footballing messia as they beat villa and villa stuffed us so obviously we should be getting brendan out and phil parkinson in but seriously how can you compare games what the hell

Different day, different game, City are very strong at home.

Some fans on this site keep talking from both sides of their mouth and it makes you wonder.

In one breadth, you say our remaining fixtures are winnable, therefore we can make top four. Yet, when others complain that we aren't there now, you turn around and say "well we all knew this will take time".

I beleive we know in all honesty what our problems are at this time but it seems some people want to turn a blind eye and instead go with their gut feelings, rather than being logical and apllying common sense.

Now I want to know what will take time to acheive; is it spending Ferari money on average youngsters with potential and hope they turn good or going out there to sign quality players who are good to compete now and who can hold forth till our academy graduates are ready?

With the impending FFP rule around the corner, we cannot continue to throw away some good money on unproven players and say well they have potential. If any player is not good enough to play for LFC now in the EPL, then he should not be signed in the first place as this will only handicapp our playing squad and cost us top 4. We are not gamblers.

Abroad Red.

Actually I think your own thinking in light of the FFP regulations are a little problematic. You want FSG to spend money 'willy-nilly' on players (a bit like QPR) that have established reputations for delivering regardless of potential and selling-on value. What happens when this fails as it has done for QPR?

It would be no good to say that we'd get better players than QPR because as much as our history plays a role in signing players so does the fact that QPR is a London club for them. Effectively we are in the market for the same players and consequently should not under-estimate how fast we are actually progressing and how much better our foundations are now. Also, one major advantage we currently have over most clubs in the EPL is that younger players must believe coming to LFC will not mean they'll become benchwarmers but that they'll actually get a chance to play and shine.

Don't get me wrong, I often feel frustrated and annoyed at some of our performances or our lack of focus but that does not mean I will give the typical knee-jerk reaction and say we should buy our way to immediate success. not only do I think that is no longer feasible for us I also believe that the modern game finds that unfeasible. The contract nomadic mercenaries of football are fast becoming unpopular figures of the past and the new modern footballing powers will be those that breed good young talent from within and pass on an understanding of club loyalty.

Gaz {Ed002's Note - You are absolutely right with that Gaz. You have a nifty weekend.}

10 Feb 2013 09:07:32
It makes me laugh that some fans have give up on top four when we haven't even played this weekend. We can't do anything what other teams do. We need to look after ourselves and win our games. The gap could be down to 6 points next Sunday if we get wins from West brom and Swansea. let's just put the pressure on all the teams above and see where we end up.

Mighty reds

I agree with you but realistically we need a number of clubs to slip up. However, there is still a lot of football to be played and I feel we have to win the majority of our game and especially the ones against those above us. We are fortunate as these are all at home.

Our rivals will take points of each other and there will be some shock results against lower opposition. At times it can be harder to playing a team fighting relegation. Then there may be injuries to key opposition players e. g. Bale, Mata etc.

There is so much left to happen. Imagine being in the Champions League final and losing 3-0 at halftime. There is no way back and winning is impossible. Unless you have 'hope in your heart'.

Crazy Horse

Agree crazy Horse we need 3/4 clubs to slip up consistently. And then WE MUST win when they do. Or at least keep winning anyhow-maybe not impossible but going to need almost faultless run of results

It will be difficult? It will only be possible if we believe? And until it's mathmatically impossible I want our players to believe and give it everything!
I still believe! We can do it.

Hey eds and fans what is happened with ngoo 3 goals in 4 games? He is banging goals for hearts. It seems that he is performing well in spl and level there is very low than epl. Eds Is he loaned to get expereince or increase his selling value?
Sorry for being to much optimistic.
Indian Red {Ed002's Note - He will be there to get experience.}

With that sort of form he will be in the first team next year. If he isn't he has at least earned himself a move somewhere else

Hey eds, NOT MOTD fever, but evrytime I've seen mignolet this season he's been in great form, is he a good keeper or just having a good season? And do you see him moving on in summer? (not necessarily to us)
Thanks in advance {Ed002's Note - I really don't know what will happen with him in the summer.}

been away travelling for a bit but Guaranga some things never change. Positive posts after the citeh game last Sunday and we haven't played since. Teams around us had wins this weekend and we haven't played yet but if I didn't know any better I'd have sworn we got beat 5-0 by Wigan or QPR. Lay off the sauce lads and look at how we have been recently in football terms. I read somewhere last week that if you threw out the first 5 games of the season we'd be in the top 4. New manager, new system, youth injection, new signings, over-earners shipped out and some delightful football being played. that's the positives.

Negatives: Lucas injury, Kelly injury, Borini injury, moaning fans, fickle keyboard warriors and a lack of patience.

Stevie will be around for 2-3 more seasons and his form of late has been outstanding. A center-half will be needed if Coates is let go but i'd love to see young kelly get a shot. He has all the tools to be successful there. Cover for Lucas in the form of a Diame type. Not an every game starter but someone who can spell him or play alongside him for the final 30 mins to help shut the shop.

Chi-Paul

The consensus around most of the football fans in general is that Liverpool are steadily moving forward. We will be a force soon.

Chelsea had 2 strikers, and we took the better one off them.

To those who said of the other striker, "I'll have him back in a heartbeat", well he just can't, can't score! HAHA!

Some of the stick the lfc players get in here is a ****in farce!

Yh so what if they finish med table season in season out!

Is the med table the league with majorca, menorca and ibiza in? I would quite like us to finish there. Especially for away games.

What a load of Balearics!
Kos the med table is a lot bigger than that

Not a rumour as such, just discussion point. Do people think we need another midfielder, and if so, in what role? I really feel we need someone to dictate play (like Stevie is doing this year) who isn't Steven Gerrard, but rather his replacement. Obviously Stevie is talented enough to play any role on the squad save keeper, so I don't mean replace him. My top 3 in mind are Goetze, Eriksen, or Wilshere. I rate our chances as 1/10, 2/10, 0/10.

Cheers

CHEERS

Lucas needs quality competition, Gerrard needs a top quality replacement and should only play 50% of matches next season and we need a top quality player for hendo's role

So 3 new players

Dear oh dear, it must be stupid hour again. When match of the day finishes, they all come on here, like the undead seeking salvation.

ND

Henderson already has competition for the CAM role from suso and coutinho. All we need in midfield is a tough tackling cdm. btw eds, has Yesil torn his ACL? Some websites reporting he could miss upto 9 months of action.

Hang on a minute. where the hell haas all the negativity come from, we haven't even lost to west brom yet?

Its bad enough being negative because we lost, but it seems as though people are almost assuming we are going to lose and get their negativity ijn early. The all knowledgeable armchair fans of Liverpool fc have taken idiocyto the next level.
