Not seen anyone say it do I'm going to. Danny murphy retired, good little player and some good memories to go with it. Super Danny murphy

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Capable of excellence. Scored in some big games too. I really liked him as a player. Thanks Danny.

He is a genuine club legend. So many Manchester Utd game goals! Plus he had a 100% penalty record, regardless of whether or not he only took 7. Retires from the game as one of the most under rated greats of our recent history. Scored a few screamers as well!

Agree0 Disagree0

I was thinking that Adam. Would be great in our current system. Great technique, intelligent movement and use of the ball and carried a genuine goal threat from midfield. Pace may have been an issue but he played premier league well into his thirties so wasn't really a major problem for him as the other areas of his game more than made up for it.
Very much enjoyed watching him play and wish him all the best. Another success story for the Crewe academy that was mentioned recently, a player not only making a premier league appearance but a long career in the top tier domestically at a few good clubs, overlooked a little at international level perhaps but very well regarded everywhere he has been.

Agree0 Disagree0

Quality player. in fact when we signed Joe Allen I kinda hoped he would become another Danny Murphy type midfielder. I'm still hopeful that he will

Agree0 Disagree0

Danny Murphy the English xavi

Agree0 Disagree0

Very underrated, definitely sold him too early

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree we got rid of him far to early, considering some of the rubbish we had after he left. A really nice man and a credit to the club, surprisingly small in real life

Agree0 Disagree0

Murphy = English Pirlo.

I wouldn't worry about players coming through right now. Think we have the youngest average age in the premier league don't we? Suso will do very well for us next season I believe, Sterling is 18! He has undoubted talent, Ibe and then a few other promising lads coming through. I think Coutinho, Suso, Suarez, Sturridge sounds pretty amazing! Potentially, who knows!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No. We have the 2nd youngest squad in the PL. 1st is Aston Villa. I do see your point and we should look up at any youngsters coming through as a bonus.

In reply to Praveen LFC,

I do think Liverpools academy is up there. However it's only just starting to churn out the odd decent player after falling behind for the last decade and a half. If you look at purely the U21's there are maybe a handful of Players who have a strong chance of making it. However look deeper in and at the lower age groups and we have some serious talent coming through. It may be another 5 years before that talent is coming through on a regular basis, but my god it will be worth the wait. When you consider that our U21's is mainly 16-21 year olds, our U18's is mainly 14-17 year olds and our U16's even stretch as low as 13 years old, a lot has to be said for the rate at which players are developing. I agree with Ed001 about Crewe though. We got a decent lad from them, Trickett-Smith. Could be excellent one day.

As for your second question with regards to who could replace Suarez; well it needs to be a versatile forward. I personally think that Muriel is a good player, but could not and will never be able to replace Suarez. He is a victim of hype. A few players who could become as good are Ibe, Bruma and Vilhena. They are all versatile attackers who can play through the middle whilst dropping deeper or wider when required. They are all 2 or 3 years away from regular Premier League football though. In terms of who could instantly replace him (and the most realistic, albeit Iit still unlikely), Diego Costa, El Shawaray and Alexis Sanchez are the best options. Sanchez would be the biggest gamble, but he is seriously talented and very poorly managed at Barca. I hope we don't sign someone like Traore though. That would be an awful decision. Suarez is not just a striker, and cannot be replaced with just goals. Muriel is ridiculously over rated though. He's a good player, but I doubt he'll ever hit 20 goals in a single season.

YNWAdam

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Nico Lopez, on loan at Udinese from Roma is very similar to Suarez, in more ways than one, though how he develops is to be seen.

I agree about Muriel. Just what has he done? He has potential, but with weight issues and injury issues so early in his career, will he develop as expected?

If we make CL, Sanchez would be a good shout. There is no chance of Costa moving now I think.

I think Benteke or Jackson Martinez would be good additions.

Agree0 Disagree0

El Sharaawy will just never happen sadly. He'd be the player I'd love to see but, if he did ever consider leaving Milan, every top club in Europe would be on alert. Even with CL football I'd find it doubtful that we would be able to bring him to the club based purely on the financial side of things. Sanchez would be very interesting but would cost a lot and, in fairness, is difficult to imagine him leaving Barca to join us. The obvious answer is: don't sell Suarez. We do not have the financial lure or the footballing lure to attract a player anywhere near his footballing ability at this moment in time - so why let him go?

Muriel at the right price would be worth a punt but his valuation far exceeds his ability.

Agree0 Disagree0

Adam, In regards to Muriel could the same not of been said of Costa in the summer? You just never know, I'm not saying I would want him however.
For me there's very few players that could replace Suarez and even fewer attainable ones for LFC.
I doubt any of the ones mentioned are realistic unless we finish top 2.

I think Ibe and Suso will be very much first team players next year and give any 20m-30m signing a serious run for there money. However if we do lose Suarez I would say we can only replace him with 2 players and would imagine we'd switch back to a 433 or similar.
In an ideal world I'd like costa and turan to replace Suarez but I'd settle for a more realistic turan and pastore (I think BR would get him back to his best). And with Suso and Ibe a year better off in their development the future is definitely bright with or without Suarez!

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Oct 2013 10:10:23
If I'm honest AG I cannot remember seeing Nico Lopez play. If he is a Roma player I'm sure I will have, but I cannot picture him or his style of play. I'm guessing he can be a heas case though? Glad you agree on Muriel. With regards to Benteke and Martinez, although I think they are excellent strikers, I don't know if they are versatile enough. Sometimes our 3-4-1-2 will become a 4-3-3 and in that scenario, neither could play without forcing Sturridge wide. Even in the 3-4-1-2 either playing with Sturridge would make us very narrow up the field. The beauty of Suarez and Sturridge is they are both not afraid of dropping deep or drifting wide to pick up the ball and become a creator. Benteke and Martinez wouldn't do this, but they are brilliant goal scorers.

In reaponse to Seano, I also struggle to see us signing Costa or Shawaray now. They have become well known and key components in their respective teams. However Sanchez is apparently very unhappy with his time at Barca, feels terribly misused and has apparently been subject to bullying from Messi in the same way Messi drove David Villa into the ground. I think if we offered him first team football and a good package, he would come and Barca would sell. He should be played up front where his pace and link up play can do damage, and Barca waste him out wide. He would cost a bit though and I doubt his wages would be cheap. We might be better off letting Aspas have a go and relying on Ibe, Morgan and Yesil for back up. Although Yesil will not drop deeper or drift wider very often, unlike Morgan and Ibe. At the end of the day, all 3 of those players have undoubted talent, but will all fade into Championship players unless we give them a chance to develop further in the first team. You are right though, we'd struggle to sign anyone who could replace Suarez instantly unless Rodgers pulls another Diamond like Sturridge from the rocks.

In reply to Extra Bacon, I think Costa has been showing potential for a while and like Sturridge just needed his manager to show the confidence in him by playing him centrally. Muriel, like AG said is over weight and very injury prone. He is also not as great as the media and FIFA make out. He lacks intelligence with his runs, doesn't get his head up and is a bit bulllish rather than technically astute. He's more Carlos Tevez than Luis Suarez. I agree with you on Suso and Ibe though. I think Coutinho is in for a shock when Suso gets back. Can't think of anything better than those two rotating in that position though and the competition to be first choice will spur them both into becoming world class talents. Don't be suprised if Rodgers is forced to adapt his formation again to accommodate for the both of them. Ibe will likely be more a regular the following season, but he is going to be some player for us. I really do see him partnering Sturridge up front. I think his directness is wasted out wide. He'll be just like Sturridge as a player. Powerful, fast, clinical, creative. I haven't been this excited since Owen!

YNWAdam

Agree0 Disagree0

El shaarawy would be perfect. A goalscorer with pace and creativity to play on that left wing would in effect win us the title I believe- imagine a front four of suarez/coutinho/el shaarawy//sturridge. That's about 2.5 goals a game just through those four players! The equivalent to about 95 premier league goals per season.
Now I mention this front four when the question was 'with suarez leaving'.
I believe wed have more chance of signing el shaarawy with suarez than without despite financial restrictions.
As things stand we are looking a reasonable shout for top 4: united are In a not too pleasant position to say the least, chelsea are lacking a top striker, city's inconsistency has been obvious, only Eriksen has really stood out of tottenhams signings and, admittedly, arsenal look top class at the moment.
If things continue in this manner I can see arsenal winning the league with us second or third, yet sturridge and suarez anylhating the scoring charts and all the world looking upon our attack as one of the best In Europe.
We now have the champions league football and money to attract and invest, and if things continue for AC Milan as they started (eight points from seven games I believe), they won't.
El shaarawy would then look for a champions league club where a) he would be played, b) the football would suit him, c) he could add something, d) they would pay him a fair amount and e) the league was big and exciting.
We would check all these boxes as we are in desperate need of a top left winger to really take us to that next level, would be willing to invest with the new champions league money, are currently playing the counter attacking football that he thrives upon, we would be serious title contenders looking to hold our own in Europe and of course, in the premier league.

For that reason, I believe el shaarawy could be our next 'marquee' signing and would play with suarez.

At present we are doing pretty well in the league.
But we are yet to play, Arsenal, spurs, Chelsea, CIty and Everton. and even the next two games, Against Newcastle and Westbrom.
we will see where we are end of decemeber.

Agree0 Disagree0

Actually Adam, what I meant was that Lopez looks physically similar to Suarez! He is highly rated and many drew comparisons with Suarez and Totti.

Was speaking to a united fan the other day who was unsurprisingly moaning about moyes and he couldn't understand why kagawa wasn't getting a proper run in an attacking midfield role. Although any chance of a transfer between united and us is pretty much nil I think he would be an excellent addition to our attacking options. Shame he is where he is as his current situation seems to fit that of many Rodgers targets ie sturridge, coutinho and sakho. Players who have talent but appear to be at a bit of a crossroads.

On a slightly different note, if we had continued success with the 3-5-2 formation would this have a significant bearing on our transfer targets?

Cheers

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Lol Liverpool - United transfers. these never go anywhere, chances are nil.

Interesting second question, would suspect that regardless of formation the centre of midfield is an area that still needs another addition. In order to be able to switch and adapt to different formations and teams we have to sign at least one quality winger. I'd say our transfer targets will be these whatever formation Rodgers prefers. Also Suarez potentially leaving in January leaves a big gap up front to fill - but by who?

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Oct 2013 08:15:03
Khagawa is a very good player. But no chance a direct transfer from UTD to Liverpool. He may have to move back to Dortumand and then U-turn to Liverpool. hhe.
I still want a quality LW, because 3-5-2 will struggle, If johnosn or Sissokho gets Injured.

ED. do you think Aspas would be off next summer?, Either a Loan or a permanent deal.
6 games. no goals and 2 shots. Suarez is back and I don't see him playing anytime,
Even If one gets injured, we would play just one up front. We have FA cup to come and that's it.
7.5 mill on a player, who isn't playing at all.
I do believe we need squad depth, But If we loose sturridge or Suarez, we would go down.

{Ed002's Note - I really don't know what will happen next summer. He had a good pre-season, is well thought of in Spain and by Rodgers and the folks at Liverpool. I pretty sick of the posters constantly trashing the Liverpool players - particularly given the club has been doing very well. I would much rather see you supporting the players - like the fans of other clubs do.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree Ed002, we should be supportive like fans of other football club, especially Chelsea in my opinion. Come on lads we should not let the few ruin it for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said ed 2 how about getting behind the players. Aspas just needs a bit of time to get use to them prem. Harry don't tell me you was one of those one of those slagging off Hendo and Lucas. You are not happy unless you are digging away.

Agree0 Disagree0

Whats going on wiv you Harry, your posts have a little substance to them at times. Poor form that lad

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said ed

Agree0 Disagree0

Aspas needs to be played up front, that's his best position. he'll never displace suarez or sturridge but he's a good back up

Agree0 Disagree0

Getting kinda sick of these posts, it's embarrassing and not needed. Every time I see the user Harry scouser I begin to wince as I read the dross. It's getting pretty damn boring now.

Alex

Agree0 Disagree0

Squad depth is important- Premier League is a different beast to La Liga, don't do to Aspas what has already been done to Borini which is laden him with unfair and unrealistic expectations and then rip into him as soon as he fails to deliver them.

Aspas will need time to settle into and adapt to the pace and physicality of the Premier League - because he hasn't been able to do that in 6 games doesn't make him a bad player, a waste of money or someone we should sell - give the lad a chance, jesus.

Agree0 Disagree0

Fair play ed genuine class

Agree0 Disagree0

Its not trashing players ed, aspas is 27 years old had 1 good season in spain.
buying aspas was a mistake an back up striker is essential in a long season.
the gap between suarez/sturridge and aspas is way to big.
we sent borini on loan in the system we are playing now borini would make goals and run for the team.
we are playing like roma, 2 up front borini knows this system.
alberto has real talent and is only 20 that makes sence.
i watch spanish football aspas is simple not good enough.
we should have kept borini and saved aspas fee.
malta

{Ed002's Note - You should get along to the ground, perhaps daub some hate messages on the outside listing the players that are no good and demanding that Rodgers and the scouting staff resign as they are clearly doing such a poor job. Some sort of campaign on Twitter and Facebook to let Aspas know that you think he is trash should help force him out as well. It is essential that so called "fans" such as you let everyone know how you feel.}

since borini's not getting game time at sunderland is there a chance that we call him back and loan him elsewhere?
thanks. {Ed002's Note - No, he is gone for the season.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He will earn his chance don't worry new manager fresh start

Agree0 Disagree0

Why would we? We're joint top of the table because we got rid of all the carp players, and Borini was the worst . Enjoy the strikers we have, on form, probably the best pair in Europe

Agree0 Disagree0

No we bought good players thus we are doing well. Borini was never given a chance, dopes like you are the reason and is Suarez and/or Sturridge are injured who will come in? Aspas in his debut premier league season? Borini would have given us extra bite in terms of the squad, can't believe how harsh our own fans are on him.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Best way is become an official member for you and your boy! It cost £30 quid but you get a fan card! With that you kinda get 2nd choice on tickets! Before they go on general sale! I've been a few games doing it that way even the united game last year!

No seriously ed001 what is he like as a player {Ed001's Note - from what I have seen of him, he is a completely left-footed wide attacker/winger, who is being used on the right by us. I am sure he could play as a left winger just as easily though, he looks very technically gifted and smooth on the ball.}

Who would you say is the best player from your home nation to ever play for Liverpool.

I would have to say Ronney Whelan from Ireland

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Craig Johnston!
Good thread Irish.

Agree0 Disagree0

Born in my hometown of St Asaph it has to be Ian Rush

Anfield Apple

{Ed002's Note - I don't think there have been any Liverpool players from my homeland. Maybe someone knows?}

irish red that's a good question to put out there i'm undecided on heighway and aldo prob just shade it with aldo as he is more my age group as a child growing up. but ronnie is a good shout and he was captain of the 89 cup final team which was a difficult time for everyone we really needed to win that match to give everyone a bit of a lift.

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh. and his his mother (my wife) is Romanian

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm originally from Kingston Jamaica so it would have to be John Barnes

Agree0 Disagree0

Harry Scousser will say "Joe Allen" for sure

Agree0 Disagree0

From the country that brought you Harry Kewell I would have to say Brad Jones ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

Where's home for you Ed002? {Ed002's Note - By birth I am American.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Heh. Nikolay Mihaylov, though "playing" and "good" are rather. relative terms

Agree0 Disagree0

Would have to be Cisse for his goal vs west ham in the final of the fa cup and his penalty in the final of the Champions League.

Agree0 Disagree0

Brad Friedl ed002? {Ed002's Note - Good point, thanks. I had forgotten that Friedel was at Liverpool for a while. A couple of years ago he was interviewed as part of a round up of how American players were getting on in Europe and I do recall it being mentioned that he was a little frustrated with his time at Liverpool due to the lack of opportunity.}

Agree0 Disagree0

For Ed002 it will be Brad Friedel!

Agree0 Disagree0

Maybe Marc Pelosi in the future Ed002?

The only player of an Indian origin to play for LFC, albeit for the kids, is Yan Dhanda. {Ed002's Note - Pelosi was born in Germany, I imagine an Air Force brat but he has been hedging his bets by retaining duel-nationality and was playing for the US pups side who have been rather up and down recently. I understand that he might be one to make it through one day. Bijev falls in to the same category but I am less sure that he will make it at Liverpool. As an aside, the US kids have a couple of lads on the books of European sides of which much is expected - Rubio Rubin who is on the books of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and Luca De La Torre who has ties that will see an eventual move to Fulham. Typically I avoid anything to do with the kids game, but I am told they are the two "picks" right now.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Zak Whitbread easy Ed002. {Ed002's Note - I didn't know he had been at the club.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree0 Disagree0

Bruce Grobelaar! The one and only from my country.

No one from my country can play football let alone playing for a top club like Liverpool but the first team doctor who imo is doing a great job doc zaf iqbal comes from pakistan that makes me feel proud.

Sean Dundee, South African born, if I'm not mistaken his the only south african to almost never play for Liverpool.

From my home nation is too broad as even my home town is difficult but at the end of the day there is only one God!

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed002 - Brad Friedel!!

Agree0 Disagree0

Steven Gerrard, went the same school as him.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ah OK Ed002. I agree that Bijev will have to move elsewhere to kick start his career, but I certainly think Pelosi is talented enough to make it. One advantage Pelosi has is that he is versatile, being able to play LB, LM and in the centre. The injury he suffered was unfortunate as I expected him to be pushing for the first team before it.

Agree0 Disagree0

Can Australia claim Johnston? I think he was South African born. Harry? Jones? Probably Kewell although his best form was at Leeds and some of the Socceroos games.

Ed01 - I know your not overly bothered but what's your thoughts on Dario being appointed in this new FA role?
Also just to give you all an update I went to the Sheff Utd game on Friday & Conor came on 25 mins into the first half, neither Sheff Utd or Crawley were anything to talk about but Conor looked the most comfortable on the ball. He misplaced a couple of passes but was still the only player that looked like he wanted the ball & didn't shy away from anything. He even managed to get a chance on goal but the keeper made a good save. Not a bad performance at all but it does make me wonder why he isn't getting a regular game when there didn't look like there was anyone any better on the night!
