2nd half was a very clever professional job. Bellamy was knackered! Had to come off... Downing was doing nothing... Carroll was there to defend set pieces... we have no pace in the team so only option was to put Enrique on and defend the goal.

It was a professional job and it worked.

p.s. if you read any posts about our desperate need for pace upfront and on the wings it's probably me!

On the 2nd half performance, I think we can agree that it wasn't pretty.

Having said that, I think it was a reflection of the game 8 days ago. Kenny has looked at it and thought they are particularly clinical infront of goal and with us being open in attack it was not going to go well.

Many have criticised Kenny's tactics recently, but here he had a game plan and executed it. It was about not losing. It was about playing it like a European game. He did just that.

Fair enough, we are Liverpool we expect this and expect that. Let's not forget how we had 65% of the ball and were camped in their half for practically all of the last game we played. You can't say you were feeling better than now after losing 3-0.

Also, it was only 45mins. The way I see it, with the three games we have played them now it's been first 25mins at our place and the second 45mins here that they have dominated. That leaves 170mins that we've had most the ball and held our own.

Be proud. Be LFC.

D-Day(1892)

Tactically Kenny had won before half time. It was the 'great' Mancini that had to change the shape of his team.
Liverpools shape never changed throughout the game whatever subs were used.

I thought we were superb. A real Italian performance against an Italian manager. Go at them from the off, get an away goal then get bodies behind the ball and tell them to try to break you down. Reminded me of our win at Chelsea last season. It's not pretty, but it sure is effective

After all the talk over the past few months about Glen's contractual stipulations etc. I think it's fair to say the lad played everywhere today. Perhaps even he will think that versatility is what is going to get him into the Euro squad.

Well done lads. Special mention to Glen too.
Left back, centre back (left) (central) and (right), and right back. Occasionally right midfield too.
D-Day (1892)

I'm sure he was in CDM for a bit too lol

He still didn't play on the RW. He seemingly refused to budge from the LB area.

Bizarre.

Maybe he really won't play RW. Was he instructed to go there and refused? I don't know.

It didn't clear it up for me. I know he played LB last season - I've always argued against this contrct thing - but until I see him on the RW I still can't say for sure.

coutinho is not exactly what we need!!he is a good player and will add flair to the tem but i think we need a proven goal scorer
ps
great result v city

Coutinho looks a real tidy player. A little like Djalminha and Leonardo mould. Very exciting if it's true. We played against him in the champions league and he displayed a good temperament.

you are absolutely loving this aren't you Macca! But if you really have done it yet again then you deserve all the fun you can get.

I personally think that it will be coutinho signing. I've come to this conclusion, as I believe zarate is too old for how unproven he is, and that Macca stated that he did not know whether we would loan or buy ruling out the dutch kid. I highly doubt that inter would sell a player they only signed 6 months ago for the future, he is 19 after all. And I don't remember Ricky alvares being mentioned in the press.

On another note, we really need to come together as a fan base behind Andy Carroll. he looked bereft of confidence tonight, and part if this is down to us. The lad has talent, so let him know it, and he should start to show it. And the paper story about his agent cannot be helping.

Just out of interest why does it rule out Dutch kid? Did they say he wont be loaned i no ed002 said its possible he could go to greece.I hope it's coutinho too

I know where are moving forward from the dark days of Woy.
But are we not getting carried away with the micky mouse cup. Champs leauge and the title is where we should be. Not playing for a cup where most teams but there 2nd team out for.

Work in progress we are very much i think.
Yorkshire Red {Ed001's Note - it is a cup with the prize of a European place at the end, if you are too arrogant to see that it is a prize worth winning, then that is your problem. We should be winning trophies, not worrying about finishing 4th.}

A cup is a cup, its silverware at the end of the day. It'd be a great boost for the players if we got to the final and ended up winning it but the game isn't over yet, we could still lose the second leg

Winning cups is what Liverpool FC is all about, no matter what the competition! I want this cup, the FA Cup and dammit, even the Premier League Cup this season, but two out of three won't be too bad, so let someone else win the FA Cup this year!;)

Keith

Some of our players really need game time to adapt so every moment that they have the opportunity to play, why wouldn't they? Maybe next season we'd play a younger team but if we are in the Semis why not give it your all to try and win? Otherwise every game up until now has been a huge waste of time

Ed001. Finishing 4th is more important than the league cup if we want to grow as a club and/or compete for the best players in the transfer market, which we need to do if we want to get closer to the title.

We also need the financial and commercial benefits - they are essential to our future. Also if we want to keep our best players happy in the long-term, players like Reina and Suarez for example- this is essential.

But I agree with you that winning a cup is of huge importance and like you, it disappoints me that people don't value a trophy these days.

It's unreal. This squad (and the fans) needs a taste of success. People like Ferguson say that success breeds a hunger for more, i'd agree with that.

No-one cares how many times you came 4th, there is no place in history for the 4th placed side - but it is important these days, it's just a sad reality of the modern game (It gave us Istanbul though eh!). If you asked the board to vote - 4th or the league cup - I'm afraid it's a no-brainer. CL football every time.

But people always remember winning a cup - I have great memories of 94-95 v Bolton - It was the highlight of my young life!

What happened to ambition. 4th and a cup (or two!) I say. 4th would be a very good season. But 4th and a cup and i'd be delighted.

I recall Arsenal fans had this - 'we don't care about the league cup' attitude last year - until they lost in the final. Then the media (and the fans) used it as a stick to beat Wenger with. Another example of trophyless failure they said.

I'd love Dalglish to show those in the media who said he was "out of touch" with the modern game (as if if it really is so 'complex' now.... yawn) to add yet another trophy to his CV.

There are only 3 a year given out domestically. Not many managers ever win trophies.

Thats what it's all about! Bulking up the trophy cabinet, but getting 4th makes us more able to compete. One hand feeds the other in many ways.

Every pundit of great experience-said Carrol aint and probably wont do it at LFC.Shearer kinder,few excuses.Hansen,and Lawro more direct>It aint hateing lad,its fact! {Ed016's Note - Because the best minds of football are in front of a camera as apposed to on a bench managing/coaching.}

People said Lucas wouldn't make it! Unfortunately for Andy he has to score goals to prove himself but its up to Downing, Enrique, Bellamy and Johnson mostly to supply him with quality service, they haven't provided that for him which doesn't help. If people think he wont come good they are foolish, before we signed him everyone was saying he'll be Englands top striker! Now people turn their backs on him. The way i see it, we paid over the odds for him (not Andy's fault), he's still only 23 and still in my view has bags of potential.

Think you need think about that again. Shearer and hansen were top notch players who know the game inside and out

Liverpool should stop playing carol the more we see him his price goes down we should keep the mystery alive and let people think that he might come good so they can make a fair offer for him , if he is going to be a lfc player he needs a radical change to his game etc.

So ed players with world of experience,dont know as much as you,oh ok

Very disciplined performance - fantastic 1st half and excellent 1st 15 mins where we went for the jugular. 2nd half I think credit goes to a brilliant defensive display though I thought we lacked an outlet.

But really, really happy and without Toure's and Kompany think we can finish job at Anfield.

Oh and 1st touch still poor, passing needs work but for workrate first class from Carroll. He wasn't helped with poor service but seeing him bust a gut just to get a foot in or shield back four when headers came out to edge of our box - spot on. Hopefully when we attack more he can get the goals to improve his confidence.

if it is true what macca said and we looking at a player from inter ...castaignos....would make sense as he fits in with our younger player policy...
i would imagine if inters interest in tevez is correct ...then i guess they gotta make room for him somewhere

also as coutinho is listed as a midfilder on the offical inter site...castaignos would seem most likely

but thats just my thoughts

11 Jan 2012 22:48:40
great result but it could have been better. to take a lead to their ground is good, oh, hang on a mo, we were at their ground. could,nt tell from the support. our away fans were again brilliant. takes me back a bit does that. On a more serious note i thought some of the players who have been getting a bit of stick recently showed up tonight. Jordan Hendo played well and Andy tried the whole game. Johnson played superbly and young Kelly did,nt look out of place at all again. 1 f**k up but he put it behind him. The taem as a whole did a job on City tonight. It was like a throwback to the great teams that we had when they were performing in Europe. Silence the crowd, steal a goal and defend it manfully. Did,nt like that italian at the end complaining about Johnson,s tackle. Ah well, lets wait for the F.A. to fine us for playing too defensively at times. not joking either.
Robbie

I do support Carrll but commending him for simply trying all game shows somethings wrong! {Ed016's Note - no patience, he needs a run of games, he is young}

GREAT Result, let us all be happy, make no mistake AC still going to be a great buy, only one concern i really thought that [please look at replays before screaming] our top man shrinked a couple of tackles tonight,god i hope injuries are not playing in his head.

Just finding his way back mate, needs more game time. You can understand why he's cautious, he was out for a long time.

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

If Gerrard shrinks from a couple of tackles in order to not be injured, I will be delighted. Without Gerrard, we are just about a top 6/7 team. With him, we can win trophies.

To be fair he probably isn't near 100% fit and looked tired around the 65th minute. But still I'd prefer a tired Gerrard than no Gerrard at all and proved why he is the best midfielder in the premier league (Hopefully he stays for a season or two more so we can get the league title he deserves!)

Does anyone else think we couldve won tie tonight,with tad more positivity?Still wouldve took result before game

I agree. We should have gone for the kill in the first half when we were on top. 2-0 would have put it to bed, in my opinion.

Um....we did win tonight

11 Jan 2012 22:42:31
Ild backed Adam before,but dissappointed tonight.Starting to see why others criticising him.Spearo is loss,lad doing well.Made up with win,but not there yet

11 Jan 2012 22:42:17
Carrol really put ina shift tonight. Fair play to him he worked really hard with no service and no support. Looked a lot fitter and happier than I had seen him in ages. Won every ball lumped his way, just needed that some one bombing on like Nolan did for Newcaste. Although I imagine this would have be Steven if Jay hadn't gone off. (Hope he's ok). Slow pace of the game suited Gerrard tonight, seemed to pullout of a lot of 50/50 tackles though. All in all a good work man like performance. A wins a win!

SuperRedTed

IF you think Gerrard is slow, have a re-think!

He slows down the whole pace of the game, it suited him today. Not a criticism, just a fact.
SuperRedTed {Ed016's Note - It is hard to play upfront on your own with an attacking team all behind you. The defensive style of play ringed a bit like rafa's old tune}

Carroll is largely useless if we play with everyone else behind the ball. If we are going to play deep with a lone striker, that striker needs to be a sprinter. Our lack of pace up front needs to addressed badly.

11 Jan 2012 22:40:55
Lad in Chester i know(neutral really)texted me-Chester have a 35 year old striker-Matty mcneil,who has better control,touch and movement than Carrol.

Carroll, 23, hammer left foot, give him time, we have him for 5 years, he'll get better... He had 2 chances today, 1 was saved by Hart, the other (even though the cross into the box was behind him) was headed just a yard wide with Hard scrambling across his goal. Give the lad a break, he was playing up front alone with hardly any service, he has hardly played 90 minutes for us this season, he scored in his last game aswell, give it a rest, some people just need to calm down and give the lad some support instead of bitching about him all the time. He didn't ask to be bought for £35m! Get behind the team, if he scores the winner in the next game people will still moan about him

11 Jan 2012 22:39:35
Firstly great result tonight and a good first half apart from Johnson and pass back Adam.
Now second half we were ABYSMAL i've been watching the reds for 40 years and I have NEVER seen a performance like it,we were COMPLETELY DEFENSIVE WITHOUT A SINGLE SHOT OR HEADER ON TARGET and ended up playing 1-9-1,for god's sake we are NOT a blackburn or a wba we are LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB and we played in the 2nd half like a typical 2nd or 3rd division team would do playing against a premier side in the F.A.Cup sitting back and holding on with EVERYONE BEHIND THE BALL, ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL and what makes it worse is seeing the smiles on Kenny's face at the end,ok we won but that performance was WOEFUL.
Out's in Jan for me would be ADAM,JOHNSON,DOWNING,KUYT,and DALGLISH

Alan50

We were playing Man City away for goodness' sake. What's wrong with playing defensive?

Keith YNWA {Ed016's Note - completely agreed, and how many teams have come away with a clean sheet from the Etihad?! atleast we shut them out thanks Keith}

A simply Idiotic post {Ed016's Note - agreed, cup games are very different to league games}

Al,agree with ya 100%, great result but s**t performance, not good enough. Simple...Has Kenny been out of the game for too long? He revitalised us but I dont think he is the man to take us forward in the long run..Who can manage us though? {Ed016's Note - obviously you!! you are full of football knowledge, to win IS good enough}

I'd rather win 1 0 than lose 3 1 and be able to say "we really played well" quite frankly... {Ed016's Note - good point}

Totally disagree. Kenny used same tactics Rafa used to use in these games on the road (against a top team). We scored one early, pressed a bit, then defended deep when we knew City would be pressing hard. Excellent strategy. United got up on City quick in FA cup match few days ago, then in second half almost blew it. Kenny surely watched that game and didn't make same mistakes. Job only half done though...

Another disgruntled man city fan.

MIKEY

You 'Alan50' are an embarrassment to Liverpool supporters.

Jatt YNWA

For goodness sake last week we dominate possession and loose 3nil

This week we get the goal learn from last week and don't play into cities hands, what would you rather outplay them and loose 3nil and be out of the tie or perform as we did and show city to be the one trick pony they are.

Chris, red in exile

I'd be very supprised if Alan, was an LFC fan. If so, not a very bright one.

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

We've had more defensive games

2nd leg of champions league vs chelsea, after luis garcias phantom goal ring any bells?
90 minutes of nothing but hoofing upfield, defence, and row Z.

A win is a win.

If we had focused on attacking, we could have conceded after losing possession in their third.

as long as it's out name on that cup, I don't care if we have 11 men on the goal line preventing them from scoring all game.

Mr Controversy

Alan50... We won the game mate, what's your problem? Man-City dont lose alot of games these days but we beat them, we worked hard and got our rewards, we got our goal and held onto it... Did you want us to pile forward so Man-City could get a goal on a counter attack or something, seriously after watching the game for 40 years you'd think you'd learn a thing or two. We play them again at Anfield and we'll set out the same way, try get a goal and if not defend our lead. You have to remember, this is to play at Wembley and a chance to get some silverware this season. And another thing, nobody ever includes a goalkeeper when showing a formation! Are these people for real, giving out about our football when we won 1-0 against the league leaders, jesus, i'll be avoiding this site when we lose for definite. Its a tough job Eds but unfortunitely, you have to put up with this bull on a daily basis.

Rocky {Ed001's Note - I just despair at times, you would think people would enjoy a victory.}

I understand the complaints about the 2nd half, but as i've mentioned on many comments like this and as the Ed's have repeatedly said. We won 1-0 at the Ethiad (which most teams cant/dont do) We came away with a clean sheet, we have an away goal and an away advantage and now Citeh have to come to Anfield, which most teams hate, regardless of how we won, would you have rather us go all out attack and Citeh bang 1 or 2 in and leave us with everythin to do at Anfield, or would you rather us win 1-0 with a defensive display and leave with the advantage? It makes sense to me to leave with the advantage rather than to entertain the crowd, plus, you should be entertained by the fact that we won, for cryin out loud we won, we have away advantage and home advantage next game, christ, no pleasin some people.

Carb

To all who disagree with my post, I would ask you to watch any of citeh's remaining home games and I will 100% guarantee that they will produce a better performance than we did last night,and you will NOT see them with a 1-9-1 formation in the 2nd half.

Also I would like to add if I'm being honest Glenn Johnson could have quite easily got a straight red last night just like Kompany did against the scum,and I can understand Mancini's reaction,but I was very dissapointed with Kenny when he said he didn't see it when we all know by his reaction he DID.

1-0 vs City away... Personally I don't see the problem. Instead of complaining of our lack of attack, instead praise there lack of goals. Praise our defensive organisation and work ethic. Sure at times reina was the most furthest liverpool player up the feild but it's a win, now lets go to anfeild and give them a good battering

Shankley said " If you can't support us when we lose or draw , don't support us when we win " now if you can't even support the team when we win God knows what he would say.

For those moaning about the second half performance - let's not forget that City dominated the second half with 10-men against United and scored two goals.

We got the result, that is all that is important.

JRG

Another result at home and a trip to Wembly, would be sweet JRG mate. Stevie and Jamie have never played in the new Wembley (for LFC). It would be nice to see them play there, before they hang their boots up. With Luis back leading the line, it could be a good day.

Need to get there 1st, I don't think it's gauranteed. City are a good team with fantastic players. But we've gave ourselves, a great chance.

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

Good point JRG...

Myk ('slick as a brick')

I think Kenny got it spot on, he knew Mancinis tatics were to throw everything they've got at us and keep the ball so instead of going for a second he allowed them to try and break us down (Which they couldn't). No doubt if it had gone to 2-1 or 1-1 we would of attacked but there was no need to

11 Jan 2012 22:27:17
Good win but not attractive football but to name a few players that aint up to scratch n already half way through the season.

1.JORDAN HENDERSON - what is his role at all? I have no doubt he will b good one day bt at the min hes a frustrating player to watch. Gets the ball runs a couple of yards then plays it back,scared of tackling. For me jonjo shelvey should of played theres more about him at the min.
2. STUART DOWNING - Dont know if he was phased with everything thats gone on this week, but its no excuse hes a professional,And getting mega wages he should be able perform at a high level.
3. ANDY CARROLL - To behonest i cant really complain about him i will admit ive been slating him all season but i could actually see some sort of improvement in his performance tonight. His first touch looked better,he put his self about and bwt 95% of the balls that was in the air he won and was unlucky not to score early in the game. But im starting to feel sorry for him hes knocking all these balls on that hes winning n theres just no one there running on to them.

But on a positive note we won thats the main thing! Bit gutted to see jay spearing to pull up in the first half with a slight injury i though he played rather well id start him instead of adam.

And glen johnson played good tonight did a really good jod in the left back position. But for me the tackle he did on lescott he should of been sent off for that, I know alot of people aint goin to agree but if he got that wrong its a career ending tackle! I admit he did win the ball but he left the ground with both feet with studs showing to me thats dangerous play.

ACHILLES.

Shut up moaning. some people are never happy and it,s seems that we have found one. no doubt you will be begging for a ticket to the final if we get there. look forward to your damning comments on the players who won the final, again if we get there and win it. robbie

To be fair he isnt really moaning..he takes in to consideration the tough week downing must of had and was positive about Carrol, johnson and spearing...Pretty balanced anlysis good job achilles

Orite so your happy with the money liverpool payed for average players and to be frankly aint performing like they should.
So everything i said is a load of lies open your eyes mate they were crap!

ACHILLES.

Why does Henderson still get slated? The lads doin well for me. Up and down, good engine, works his socks off, good passer of the ball and puts a good shift in. He's still young.

Disagree on Henderson, one of our best players tonight! Don't forget the lad still plays for England under 21s!!

Carroll - I just don't know... think we should offer him as much support until the day Kenny decides it ain't going to work.

We won

Great result tnight against a very good side.Not one to moan about players but struggling to see what carroll brings.Hope i am wrong but dont think its going to happen for him with us.I know confidence plays a massive part in performance but he really does look miles away from being the player we saw at newcastle.

100% agree mate, I know players are supposed to be fit but Carroll is way off the pace at present, av seen faster Sunday league players with a skinfull of beer look fitter....

The Grand wizard...

Did you see him get any service after the first half hour? He reminds me a bit of Torres when he was asked to play lone striker and had 2 defenders on him all the time.

Yes, but Torres could get the ball go past the two defenders and nip it in the bottom corner. Carroll has never shown any of that and he's not that kind of player.

Carroll got back and defended well at times. Of course his only role was to head the ball on and waste time at the end, of course he's not always gonna turn Savic but by stopping them winning the header it allows our defence to push up a bit and stops them from breaking us down.

At least it looked like he (Carroll) was trying. He got a couple of efforts on goal too despite the lack of service (or a midfield!). Won some knock-downs also, but there was little support from the midfield to feed off him. He did okay.

But we did great. A 1-0 away to the league leaders. A fine win.

HOWEVER -

I must admit that it is slightly worrying that the players seemed as if they didn't know where they were meant to be playing in the last half hour or so.

Some of them looked confused and/or downright pissed off about it.

Only a fool would ignore this - that was borderline Maradona management. A player should ALWAYS know his role in the side. We were surviving on instinct towards the end.

Crazy game. Great result. But sort out the problems we clearly had in getting information to the players.

I do remember seeing Clarke giving instructions to one of the senior players (Gerrard, or was it Carra? I can't remember who...).

From what I see, those instructions were not relayed properly. This is not amateur football - whatever went wrong - sort it out.

Lawrenson heard Johnson shouting that he didn't know where he was supposed to be playing. Embarrassing at this level.

It wouldn't happen with Mourinho - even with 10 at the back they'd know their roles. They are professionals.

It was slack. What can I say. I'm a perfectionist. Sort it out. Improve our organisation in this respect please.

Before you start, I'm aware our defence is good btw, and that we hung on to our lead. But I never saw madness like that until last night. It can't become a habit - hopefully it's just a one-off communication breakdown, I felt like sharing my concerns.

BJH YNWA. (Again - a fine result).

Good post 1st time said that to you lo

Before the game mate you had concerns about Lee mason but i think its one of the best ref performances i have seen for ages. He let the game flow and didnt blow every niggley foul.

I understood your concerns mate but if everybody refereed like tonight the games would be better and a faster flow to them.

Anyway got to be happy tonight. I just hope we can finish it off.

Mighty reds

He didn't really have anything to do Mighty Reds mate. He got the penalty right (for a change) when i've seen him before, he's been rubbish. The game was played in good spirit, I'm still in shock he got to ref a semi-final?

He must be retiring soon or the FA defo have it in for us. lol

Great result for us tonight against a weakened but still more than capable City side, at the Etihad!

Solid performance throughout the game, was a little concerned when Jay went off for Charlie, due to no natural DM being on the pitch for us, but bar the foul just outside the area from Adam he had a pretty good game. Lucas managed to cut that out of his game I'd imagine Adam can too.

Carroll, his knockdowns and aerial battles for me were pretty much spot on tonight, lets hope he continues to improve game by game and then starts producing performances aerially like tonight against tougher opponents than Savic. Burst of pace and strength for the first opportunity was good to see too, workrate was decent and his first touch was not brilliant but I'm not knocking the guy, he did pretty well tonight.

Props to Reina too, shot stopper supremo and distribution king.

We defended efficiently and as a unit, understandable we wanted to close the game out in a cup semi final against top opposition.

Advantage Anfield.

I know a lot of fans are frustrated with tonight's performance. But this reminded me of a great European first leg away match. Well done King Kenny & Well played Boys. I do wish we had a front man in the mould of Torres!! Carroll has a lot of work to do, first touch awful, needs to get his head right!!

What a snooze fest - 2 poor teams - but I guess if you're used to it then you guys wouldn't notice

Well we're better than 'insert your team here' they're really rubbish.

Is your team beating City in the semi final of the Carling cup? No. I lot of people think its mancs or spuds but I have a feeling this could be an arse.

Its a UTD fan can't you just sniff them out!

Great result everyone worked hard everyone even Carroll We didn't get a player close enough to him to help him out, a clear thing is we really lack pace outside and uptop even the bench lacked anyone with genuine pace well done though redmen

Adam is a liability, his ego, lack of pace,giving frekicks away anddoesnt track back in disrupting the flow of play 4 liverpool. as adam replaced fantastic spearing, the system broke down due to 1 bad cog.

His ego? What are you on?

Gotta say thankyou to the lads for a great result to this perfect result for a 1st half of a league cup semi..... All I can say is how GLAD I am to have Stevie's class, steel, composure and experience back for such a massive game..... The Main MAN has been missing almost all year and what a pleasure to have him back. Can I also mention a big mention to tonights ref whom completely stayed anonymous ( which I think is best ) and refereed the semi-final perfectly. King Kenny you ARE the man, we love and truly adore you. Village

Great win tonight a perfect away performance. It was like an away european game. I thought kennys tactics were superb.

I thought the whole team played as a team and thats why we take the advantage back to anfield.

I also liked gerrards interview at the end and talking mancini hypocrisy.

You really need to learn what exactly it is to be a Liverpool fan. I do not even have to put forward arguments I am sure people will agree this is ridiculous to hear after beating the title leaders at their stadium playing with these players that are "not good enough" well they were sure good enough to win today.}

If anyone needs to get a grip its you; we've just left the Etihad Stadium with an advantage leading into the second-leg at Anfield. We played well and controlled the first half. We then in 2nd half made sure we held onto our lead and carried it onto the second-leg. If your whining when we've just won, I wonder what you would be like if we lost! Hopefully we can buy someone in the following weeks to strengthen our attack and not leave Carroll as isolated upfront. We should definetly have the game for the taking at Anfield.

Listen we eaked a result n fair play but we outlayed 61million on adam handerson n carrol and we are 6th in the league and have a slender lead in a 2 legged game , they were missing proper players also, city aint been gr8 the last few games , do u reckon we will get that last spot for champs lge . ?? im not trying to bash them after a good win but cmon we lack pace n creativity big time , champions league is the minimum . nice to have a final to play but i know what id rather, a group game(s)) against bayern mlan etc n not a final against crystal palace, its not a grammer r spelling site either

glad with the win lads but really peed with the second half kenny wat you thinking city were there for the taking we could of got another goal at least and were through to the final just didnt get it. and edds bang goes your point on gj only playing rb so get off his back he is miles better at the moment then kelly at rb so give it a rest now and get behind johnson because he was one of are best players tonight! and just to point out were was the crosses for ac no were! i no yes we won but could of been so much better just hope it doesnt haunt us in thr second leg. {Ed001's Note - I hope it does prove it was wrong, but the person who told me is still adamant it is there and he should know better than us. it is really good to be able to watch a game without any referee talking points. hats off to lee mason. he let the game flow and there could have been a few bookings handed out if someone else was officiating. he resisted and the game benefited due to that. hats off to lee mason.

we defended really well tonight (even when jonno played centre defensive holding back for a bit) and deserved the win.
i also think city were very very poor. they look lost without their big boys. slighty worrying as united now have the edge in the title race and we never want that.

great win redmen.

Great result tonight - very happy taking a 1 - 0 lead back to Anfield.

However, if I was a neutral I would have switched off along time ago. Not much quality on show, weak and inconsistent refereeing, players going over easily and a severe lack of atmosphere. Very poor entertainment.

FT

Sorry but I think the ref had a fantastic game

We usually create 112 chances in a game FT mate, but still only come away with a draw. We set out to get a result tonight (win or draw) we done that with ease.

What a difference a year makes. Last year at this point we were out of both cups and bottom half of the league, on the Europa league to look forward. Now we may not have Europe but we are leading in the semi-final of the league cup, awaiting a home tie in round 4 of the F.A. cup and 3 points off 3rd in the league. Two questions for anyone:

(1) What was Liverpool formation
last 10 minutes?

(2) What did Carrager get booked for?

Good win lads, but did not enjoy last 10 mins.

Formation easy 1 . 9 . 1 IT WORKS EVERY TIME Steve clarke quality defencive mind

9-1-0 andy played the lone midfielder role

Formation was all hands on deck mate!

The formation looked something like 6-3-1, and Carragher got booked apparently for kickin out at nasri while fightin for the ball, i didnt see it myself but im sure thats what Lawro said it was for

Carb

Carra, according to the commentary, took a little dig at Nasri. I didn't see it, but that's supposedly what happened.

Great win very negative second half though surprised he never through doni on in goal with reina

Looked like we played 9-0-1 for the last 10 mins.

Watched the game,it looks like we have gone all the way back all those years under houllier when we take a lead and defend,I mean 6 defendersin pitch,what would happened if city scored did we had any attacking players?I'm sure city will attack at anfield and if liverpool don't score we will get punished,I remember watching barcelona v liverpool at nou camp in 2001 one sided game which we drew,liverpool need quick and pacey players,like of adam,hendo,downing,carrol are not performing...

I know were playing away to the top of the league, 1 defeat in 31 at home, lets go gung ho and attack them for 90 minutes and blow are chance of a cup final appearance..........idiot!! what does it take to make some people satisfied with a LFC performance. That was an excellant "european" away performance, silence the crowd control the ball, get an away goal and defend! by the way AC put in a great stint, well done son! - TMac

You must have been watching a different game if you think Henderson wasn't good in that match.

Just enjoy the win tit.

I dislike seeing us playing negative tactics but sometimes you don't have a choice. Away to Man City is somewhere you've got to do that, and park the bus. It well and truly worked.

Fantastic result all the same.

Finally, someone who see's sense, it might have been different at Anfield, but we're goin away with an away win and Anfield to come, tactics will be different at Anfield, but finally, someone not complainin about tryin to take the win

Spot on MIKEY mate, especially the tactics bit. Only for Joe Hart we would have been 2-3 up, in the 1st 15-20 mins. Go 1-0 up, then park the bus. The tactics were spot on imo. City never really looked like scoring. We've been playing nice football all season, it's nice to see we can grind out results too.

If anyone would have offered me a 1-0 win tonight. I would have bitten their arm off for it.

Thing is with Rafa we would have been in the semis of the Champs league not the micky mouse cup. I understand that we are moving forward from under woy, but think we are getting acrried away with a micky mouse cup.

For me it is the Champs leauge and the title where we should be. Since Rafa has gone we have been nowehere near them, and i still feel we are no wher near them.

Would have rafa back any day. {Ed016's Note - Who's fault is it we are not in champions league? sure as hell isn't Kenny's. How can you expect to be rivaling city at the top of the league in the very FIRST season of a rebuilding process. How do you know if we were in the champions league we wouldn't be doing well? We are also 3 points off of 4th which will allow us to buy better players, still in the FA cup, half way to Wembely and we did that without Suarez. I think you need to re-asses}

Im just watching the match and as far as I can see Andy Carroll is brutal. No pace no touch. Looks like he would rather be elsewhere. Heskey was twice the player and that's saying something. Can we not find a striker anywhere that would put as much effort in as a rush or fowler. We should play dirk up front. At least he tries.

And your name is? Moaner? Whinger?

Disgraceful by Dalglish. Worst City team for months and we've got 6 defenders on. Why didn't we use our little pace that we've got and get at them, pathetic.
Finisher

You kidding? We won the game at Eithad stadium (and shutout I might add). I don't care if they have a few players out, the team on the pitch was still worth a couple hundred million and we put them to bed.

Pathetic that we won.

Give up!

City are extremely dangerous which ever team they put out. The second half was always going to be tough, we were under pressure and did what we needed to get the result away ready for the second let at Anfield so to call it disgraceful mate is ridiculous.

Didn't we just beat the team who beat us 3-0 last week away from home?

Because City were all ovr us 2nd half and what would you rather do, have Pool park the bus and go away with a 1-0 away win/advantage and have to go to anfield, or have City score one of their chances and maybe more, and then have Pool do all the work at home, we won, thats the big picture, now City have to come to Anfield

Watching this game tonight looking at andy carroll he is getting there his touches are still off but his strength is there tonight form is temporary class is class no doubting he has the potential to be an assett. Surely it cant be luc c from earlier posts he aint going to give us that extra for the top4 where as coutinho is creative same with zarate but is he not just on loan from lazio so it would be from lazio. Some of that is down to City upping their game on the ball. While they're keeping possession better, we are not. Also, they're closing down much better, though our defending had by no means gone to the dogs.

IMO I don't think any of these young kids from Inter are what we need. We need a proven premiership striker for while Suarez is out, so I think that Bent would be an excellent option at the right price. It maybe Gary Hooper, I've heard his name thrown round a bit on here and else where. However I'm all for buying for the future so don't bite my head off...

Rob

Hooper, the proven premier league striker?

If and only if a prem striker was to be bought...iin my opinion Fletcher at Wolves would be the best option....

Yeah sorry, I know Hooper isn't a PL striker. But living in Scotland I've seen him play for Celtic many times and he is excellent up here.

Not difficult to be excellent in Scotland for a decent player though.

Andy Carroll is awful. Slow as hell, can't control or head a ball. He is a joke. He's knackered already

I agree, he's having a shocker. Can't even hold the ball up to give us a chance. Twice Bellamy has come infield during this half even though the ball on to Carroll has been available.

-Shane.

Something just isn't right with Andy, there is having a lack of confidence and then not being able to control the ball or complete a pass. I really want him to succeed at the club but i fear it just wont happen with Caroll. I dont know if the way he trains now takes too much out of him or what. Get him back on the beer and fags kenny so he can return to the form we saw at newcastle.

macca, dont you find that a striker should not be the main target but surely 2 decent wingers who can cross a ball after beating a man...there may be issues with the fitness/work ethics of Carroll in training but the lad looks promising infact (i love Carroll)...unfortunately theres only me and Mrs Vordermans stalker who seem to be saying this..
If you watch Rooney he does well on and off but if Valencia plays wing and Valencia is a basic byline and good cross player..then Rooney bags a plenty especially with his head (hair or not)..SMF

The LOAN deal would be similar to the type of deal we have setup for Dani Pacheco.

We loaned him to Atletico. Then they loaned him to Rayo. {Ed002's Note - I am pretty sure you cannot do that in England.}

Hi Ed

Have you ever thought of scoring each individuals rumours at the end of each transfer window and posting a rating score next to their user name. It may stop bu** sh** rumours and promote the genuine posters like Macca.

Evered {Ed002's Note - No.}

This is a good idea, but i think the Ed's give up enough of there time as it is to run the site, unpaid i believe, and doing that would be extremely time consuming.

Instead of rating them, you could just show how many times people were correct or incorrect. I'd be quite happy to post my own stats, but I dont think people are interested. They rarely seem to believe or take notice to the info I give.

Enrique on the bench? ENRIQUE ON THE BENCH!? Don't get me wrong, I love Kelly, but why put Enrique on the bench? His crosses are the ones we need on the left hand side.

The only logic I see in Kenny's decision is that Downing can run up more without getting squeezed by Enrique. But I'm still shocked at the decision.

Thoughts Ed?

RenegadeRed {Ed002's Note - Hot tea is good for shocks.}

RenegadeRed {Ed002's Note - At present gin. But I am not in any pre-match phse. I am not even in England today.}

Do you not think he might need a rest?
Johnson is good on the left, he doesn't wonder off as much, plus gives Kelly a badly needed game.

MIKEY

I think Johnson is playing on the left mate, is because Adam Johnson will probably play RW, for City. A.Johnson likes to recieve the ball on the touch line, then he very rarely gets to the by-line and cross the ball, with his right. He will cut inside and when/if he does Glen will be better equiped to deal with him, as he is naturally right-footed.

I remember Rafa doing the exact same thing, when we played Barca away in the CL. Rafa played Arbeloa LB, to stop Messi cutting inside and it worked a treat.

Zarate is on loan anyway?

According to macca's views it seems that theres only two players he could be talking about

Luc Castaignos
Aleb Hernandez

Agreed?

Panda {Ed002's Note - Why limit it?}

I have just been on Inter's website and there are 6 players who could be classed as young talent i am using the latest year of birth as 1989

MJ

Abel Hernandez plays for Palermo, so I don't expect it to happen, after all Macca did say from Inter Milan

AG

Hernandez plays for Palermo doesn't he?

Coutinho has been linked in the past, whilst Castaignos has been linked recently, as has Zarate who has had an unhappy time there (great player though imo - he would suit a good footballing side).

Either a loan-to-buy deal or permanent transfer must be in place for one of these IF what Macca says is reliable.

A loan without an agreed price would seem silly to me at a club of our standing.

Any of them would be interesting signings for sure. Unexpected targets.

The Tevez to Inter deal could mean a non-EU player may have to leave to make room. Here's some food for thought.

Castaignos arrived there recently didn't he? Unlikely.

Whilst Coutinho has been getting some first team games recently too, big things are expected of him. Unlikely.

Zarate perhaps?! He has a glimmer of 'the genius' about him. I'd love it, but I'm unsure - particularly as he's on loan from Lazio! Which throws it all up in the air.

BUT

Perhaps Lazio can agree a fee with LFC, where they can take over the loan to buy arrangement - or outright buy him now.

He can then leave Inter and free a spot for Tevez to arrive.....

Am I Sherlock Holmes?

Or am I losing it?

BJH YNWA.

Ed002,Macca did mention Inter specifically did he? If not,does a certain Luuk DeJong fit that category-criteria? Maybe we've heard a teams readying acbid and were gonna make a surpise move. All speculation i know but exciting times ahead,starting with getting a big result tonight.

Culligan {Ed002's Note - It seems it is an Inter player and folks seem to have narrowed it dow. I am surprised there has been no reaction to all of those expecting Cavani, Hazard, Higuain all to arrive.}

11 Jan 2012 18:07:47
Luc Castaignos (Inter) on his way soon to the mighty Reds..

Lets hope so, at 18yrs old he scored 15 league goals albeit in Holland. The best thing about him is his passion, he loves to play and loves scoring goals. {Ed002's Note - I hear talk this evening that Castaignos may be sent on loan to grease the wheels prior to a move for Ramirez from Bologna. If nothing else, it demonstrates that a loan may be possible.}

11 Jan 2012 18:18:55
With the FA actions of late and the treatment towards our great club...I think the club should go alone in forming this European super-league with independent TV rights. I also believe they should go hand-in-hand with the Salford lot to add a little extra muscle! My, how the premier league would sweat then. By the way, I am very anti Utd but I sense they are getting itchy feet too with all this shabite that has been going on in this country...Bernstein has issues with both clubs and wants his little City right up there.

Everybody stop speculating about the fact wel not sign anybody we have had a below average and frankly poor start for where we want to be and what we have spent any other manager with what kennys spent would be under pressure hel be desperate to prove the worth of the signings but he will use all the funds he can get to get us top4 as fenway said 4th place was MINIMUM so expect some sort of goalscorer. The general word around anfield is that a striker is a stick on we dont need cover for lucas expect movement! {Ed016's Note - Im sorry where do you expect to be? Not only unbelievable but completely UNGRATEFUL for what the club has achieved over the past 12 months. Would hate to think what you think if Hodgson was still in charge, how is it a poor start? you realise today is a semifinal cup tie. but whatever}

Just can't believe the mentality of some so called "fans".

Like Ed said mate. A semi-final tonight, a fantastic home tie against the Mancs, to look forward to. And only 3 points off a CL spot. And the added bonus of seeing who/when the club will bring someone in. Instead of worrying about keeping our best players, instead of refinancing debt.

Ed, check this guys IP address mate. If it's from Texas, I fear that Hicks is on the prowl again.

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

So were all happy being 6th behind all of our rivals were all happy about that? i am very grateful for what has happened what i am trying to get at is the money that has been spent is completly crazy for what downing hendo and andy that is nearly 100m! thats ronaldo and modric come on i am appreciative for kenny though i wish he was more sensible. he is using the same tactics he used in his previous reign football has changed. semifinal cup tie is excellent i mean the start could have been better look at spurs were a bigger club than spurs. we have drew with norwich, blackburn all sorts.

To OP, why do you think you don't hear anything about Kenny being under pressure in the press? It's because, despite the press's love for a story (especially about Liverpool recently), even they know no-one's gonna believe it if they said Kenny was under pressure. They know, as every other sane person out there knows, that Kenny has done a tremendous job since taking over the absolute shambles of last January. We're a team with a future again, and for that i'm eternally grateful to the Liverpool owners and The King himself.

Hi guys great website. I am nervous about the match tonight. We must go out there and win the match. With the disadvantages that man city have, surely we can get the result tonight. Also we must get top 4 and hopefully win this weekend against stoke as that will be a hard game as well. I'm just worried about the formation that Kenny will use. We beat stoke, Chelsea, exeter and Brighton away in this tournament, surely we can win tonight. What do u guys think?. Thank u and YNWA

If we get an early chance like last week, we need to put it away.
If they score first it makes it a lot harder with our set up in these type of away games.
But if we get the first one, we can get come away with a result.
The Real KB

I agree with you, Real KB, mate! If the lads get an early chance like Downing's last week, it's got to be put it away. I do expect Pepe to be up for this game, I think it's good that he's got an opportunity for a bounce back game, and at the same venue, after last week's bad performance. YNWA!

City still have a great team no matter who they are missing but we will give them a run for there money.

Have we signed marco bueno yet, who is tipped to be the new javier hernandez?

I think i read a while back that when he turns 18 (i think) he will join LFC

We let Andy Polo get away!

12 Jan 2012 17:18:03
From reading about Bueno's style and performances, he's not really much like Hernandez - that was just a lazy tabloid comparison because he's Mexican.

He's more of a creative player, a traditional S.American No.10 (I know that Mexico is in N.America btw, before the smartarses jump on me). I gather he's not exactly a prolific goalscorer either.

We have first option on him this summer. He has not moved here yet. That was the situation in Oct - I don't think it has changed. He must be 18 before he can move under FIFA law but we may bid for him.

Here's a link to some (pretty recent) info. Check for more yourself!

He's played his first game for Pachuca and will be 18 in March according to his club. We may move for him in the summer.

WHOPPER TRANSFER ALERT

This one really is a corker, my mate Steve Sausage works for Liverpool FC, that not his real name but its similar enough, I'm trying to hide his identity, any way Saus was doing his very important job the other day when he was called to reception for something to do with food orders for some high profile box, when he got back to his desk King Kenny was using his computer, "Howaya Kenny" Stevie Sausage said, Kenny turned with a look of shock on his face and quickly closed the page he was on and said "Just checking my hotmail Mr.Sausage" then walked off rather quickly. Now apparently it's not unknown for Kenny to use other peoples computers because he has very sensitive ears and he likes to have his own computer turned off because the noise it makes can cause him some discomfort, so Sausage thought little of it and went back to his very important job, ordering the food. This really was a fancy box he was getting the grub in for and the very first thing on the list was caviare. He started to type it in to his computer, c-a-v then all of a sudden Cavani pops up in front of him, now he's not really into football and he's never even heard of Cavani so out of curiosity he opened the file, well it only turned out to be a contract fully drawn up and arrival times for a medical with flight details saying Cavani will be in Melwood on Thursday. This is all 100% true he sent me a picture of everything straight away, I would put the picture up but unfortunately on my home my phone was plucked from my hand by a periguin falcon.

Ed001,your gut told us yesterday that if we were to sign a forward in this window it would be Sow.
Just wondering has it not changed its mind to Podolski or Saldado today mate. Can't say I've ever seen Soy play ED,what type of forward is he? Or is their someone in the Premier league who's a similar style?

Culligan {Ed001's Note - I don't really know a lot about Sow, he just seems the most likely to join.}

Ed why do you think sow is most likely to join then ,what do you know {Ed001's Note - Lille are willing to sell, he is looking to move on and he fits in with our needs, plus we have been closely watching him. His price is also likely to be a good one, not the ridiculously high figures that are quoted for some players.}

Cheers ed {Ed001's Note - you're welcome.}

Just like to give my penny's worth on Andy Carroll and the possibility of Podolski joining us. Regarding Big Andy we've not seen the best of him for how can I describe,the service to him has been gash.
To get the best out of a player like him we've got to get better quality balls into the box for him to thrive. Not just lumped upto him,the centre half has a running jump on him and he gets accused of not being,or should I say that the perception of some fan's is that his aerial ability is overrated which is horse Man Utd in my opinion. When that balls hung up like of a Reina goal kick,he wins most of them aerial duels like against Newcastle where he won 100% of em.
He needs players to start getting the ball in with more quality,especially off Downing who needs to get back to the form he showed he could play at Villa last season. Shown glimpses for us but just as he scores his first goal,he celebrates by allegedly chinnin his ex.
Can't just leave it to the fullbacks to be the sole crosses because the angle they cross at isn't as good as where the Igenuine wide players cross from which should be as parallel with the 18 yard box,the closer to the by line the better.
Seems only Enrique is the only guy who gets their on a regular which ain't good enough.
Podolski would be a massive coup for the club. I feel he's never shown his full potential at club level,particularly his ill decided faited stint at Bayern. I think he's tho type of player who needs to feel wanted and who better then K.K and the Liverpool faithful to make that happen. Versatile,a bit of fire in his belly with out being controversial. DC,give the whole Liverpool football club a lift and make it happen. I'd go for Hoillet in this window,cause mark my words he'll be a top echelon player soon enough,especially surrounded by all the great players we've already got he'd be training with everyday.

Culligan

Regarding Andy Carroll his movement is awful, you can't always be expected to play the perfect ball into him. A Great Centre forward can make something out of nothing with instant control and great movement which I'm afraid he hasn't got.
kidmillions

Didn't say he was a great centre forward,but has all the attributes to become one given the right service that players like himself and Llorente need. Now i'm not saying he's in Llorente's league yet but i would have love to have seen him at 22 and i bet he looked a bit ungainly and not the most pleasing on the eye. His movement and touch can aand will improve,although i do think its improved slowly but surely since he's joine us.
I think the movement issue's stem from the way Newcastle played and how they used him,which was look,aim and fire in his vicinity and he flicked it on or knocked it down,he rarely had to move with their style. I'm sure we've a monster in the making if we show a little patience,get behind himso he feels like a Liverpool player. Just my opinion though mate.

Culligan

Well, see if Carroll can 'up the tempo' while Suarez is out. I've always had a funny feeling he'll end up producing though.

Cuchulainn's Hounds

Do respect your opinion Culligan, I just think playing upfront you've either got or you havn't. In football terms age 22 you should be right on your game.

We all seem to be getting carried away with the mickey mouse cup. None of the other big teams care about it so why are we. It's not as prestigious as the FA CUP and certainly not as important as the league. Our priority should be the game against Stoke on the weekend and the likes of Bellamy should be on the bench so he can play Saturday. We need to get back in the top 4 to attract better players and increase our revenues.
Yes it would be great to win the cup but let's not get carried away with it.
Focus on the stoke game as that will be a tough game.

They're not screaming about it coz they got knocked out mate. Get a grip

The cup i believe guarentees European football, if at the end of the season we have to take risks to win games to get into the top 4 and it all goes wrong for us we could end up with no euro football at all again. Winning the cup would at least take that risk away.

I kind of agree with you,
the league cup and FA cup
are not as important 4th spot
for me either. We really need
to get back into the CL.
In particular, after the Suarez incident,
we should tell the FA they can stick
their shiny cup up their asps.
However, having been drawn against
man-city I have to hope we play
our stongest side and win,
in a game billed as passion (LFC)
vs money (MCFC).
And same goes really for draw against
man united, in the FA cup,
let's f*****g beam the scum
for Luis Suarez.

I just want to go to Wembley to see us win a trophy....you may call it worthless, I call us the team to have won the trophy more than any others....

besides success breeds success... just ask Arsenal!

Richards

Winner's medal vs "we finished 4th one year". Hmmm, see what you mean.....

City won the Fa cup last year and it's done wonders for the whole clubs confidence besides the money that is -)

Hi folks, I think we are missing a trick here and not giving Camoli the credit he deserves when we look at his track record. When at spurs he was succesful in signing future talent and also existing experienced pro's who had the potential to improve. Lets look at his record and then start a debate on possible targets that may not be already top players?

This is subjective of course, but here's my classification of those signings:

Unsuccessful:
Adel Taarabt, Cesar Sanchez, Chris Gunter, Dorian Dervitte, Gilberto, Hossam Ghaly, Jonathan Woodgate, Mido and Ricardo Rocha.

(I've added Jonathan Woodgate to this list because let's face it, the guy had an injury record that made Aquilani look like Superman. Maybe his signing was merely to placate the physio who had become lonely after Darren Anderton left.)

Successful players for Tottenham – Suited to their mid-table status:
Alan Hutton, Ben Alnwick, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Danny Murphy, David Bentley, Didier Zokora, Giovani dos Santos, John Bostock, Pascal Chimbonda, Steed Malbranque, Verdun Corluka

Successful players who could have a role in a top-six side:
Aaron Lennon, Darren Bent, Heurelho Gomes, Kevin Prince Boateng, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Younes Kaboul

The crème de la crème:
Gareth Bale, Dimitar Berbatov, Luca Modric

Camoli got lennon off Leeds for £1 million, Bale from Southampton for £5 million, Kevin Prince Boateng for £5.4 million.

You got ya players groups in a muddle there mate, woody was very succesfull only injury ruled him from being a spurs great, as for comoli himself he actally had nothing to do with the lennons bales @ modrics of this world, he did oversee the signings but finding them then no

Trouble with Charlie Comolli was when he goes out to find a defender he came back with Darren Bent.

Hi Eds, not a rumour more a dis-rumour!

Do my fellow reds think we bought Carroll after tossing a coin? On a whim? No!

He had been looked at a few times and made impressive impressions with everyone. Now, the pressure is on the young man and when (when not if) he begins to deliver (which could be tonight!) my fellow reds, please take a moment to think back!

No we bought him after tossing through £50million notes

afternoon ed and felloe reds ,question for you's,do u think kenny is missing something reguards gerrard and our best route to goal,for me gerrards best position isnt centre mid any more its roaming behind the striker att mid, he is at a stage in his career where we have to protect him and let him play in a position where he can play through the killer ball and also get in position himself to score cause we all know hes one of the best finishers in the game ,i think raffa changed gerrards game for the best and i dont think he should be played in centre mid having to jump into crunching tackles ,he should be given the zidane role and protected the best way he can so he can still get another 5 years out of him,only thing is at the moment we dont have a player in centre mid who can feed gerrard the ball in dangerous areas like alonso ,do u guys think we need a xabi type player ?
thanks -jeff {Ed001's Note - I would prefer Gerrard on the right myself, his crossing is the best in the game.}

Have you read Gerrard's book? The things he loves and therefore excels at are the central midfield players roles, and I quote "tackle, tackle, pass".... irrespective of how good he is, behind the stirker, on the right wing, even at right back he should play centre mid where he can influence games the most. He also scores goals running from deep. He is without doubt the complete footballer and often pays the price for being too verstile. i will day once again read the guys book. YNWA - Keiran LFC fan

Gerrard always dangerous playing behind striker,scores and creates more from this position
thanks jeff {Ed001's Note - scored a lot from the right and created tons too. I just think he is the only player we have capable of playing on the right at the level we need.}

I got to agree with ed001 i think hes played some off his best football on the right
wildwelshman

Gerrard will play where kenny tells him to play, not where he wants to play.
Im with the ed on this one, right mid is where he should be playing right now.
We have plenty of central mids who can do a job but nobody comfortable on the right.

MIKEY

I know we all say centre mid is Stevens best position but Benitez want to adapt his versatility and stuck in numerous roles, most favourably right mid or up front.

He was critized for this but Gerrard was scoring loads and assisting loads.

I prefer Gerrard up front in a supporting role as he had world class vision and a cool head for goals.
He also tracs the ball and is a nightmare for defences.
On the Gerrard Torres partnership, how many assists did Gerrard give Torres?

I believe Gerrard Suarez partnership will be lethal and think he would be ideal to get Carroll firing while Suarez is away.

To me it's a no brainer, Gerrard should play the Rooney role

Just watched his goals against west ham in and olympiakos. Still blows my mind. I really hope he picks up a league medal before he retires, he deserves it.

Change of subject - anyone else out there think an updated 'LFC Match & News Centre' App for the iPhone is way, way overdue?
The official LFC site has stated for months now that a new version will soon be released. The App is a joke and really not up to LFC standards compared with other clubs. It's embarrassing.
If anyone has any news or contacts within the club (half sisters, mother's brother etc) who can shed light on when this long overdue release will be out, I'd be very grateful. Ta.

If Johnson is to go then if, IF we buy a replacement then id like to see N.Clyne of C.Palace as he plays similar to Johnson but can defend better, however if we don't buy a replacement then id be happy with Kelly as 1st choice and Flanagan as back up, but i see Kelly as a center back in the long term so we might need to replace Johnson. Eds what you think?

BigD

You Muppet, johnson is infinately better than that donkey you mentioned. Glen Johnson gets slated for being defensively weak but it is simply not true, we have the best defence on the PL of which he is an integral part. He gets slated for bad defending because he is world class going forward. Still a world class footballer and quality defender - I wish "LFC Fans" would notice that, but then half of you guys know nothing about fottbal and have probably never played at a decent level. I'll say the same of the under-rated and ever dependable Dan Agger who is head and shoulders above any other CB in the PL.

"ever dependable Danny Agger" ??

Big Bill

Every Liverpool fan I know loves Agger...and we're all fans of Johnson but wouldn't say no if we were offered around 15 million for him, because that could fund a move for a striker and we have Kelly waiting in the wings. There's only one muppet around here mate

Red Ollie

I remember saying when we signed Glen 'what we needed was a full back not a right winger'. I was right then regarding needing a full back-though Kelly has appeared now and we STILL need the right winger.
Afraid GJ's days are numbered

Puzzled

Your the Muppet m8, if you read the post properly then you would notice that i haven't slated Johnson i just mentioned that Clyne is a better defender in my view(everyones got a different view), Johnson is very similar to S.Ramos of Madrid as he is brilliant going forward but not much good defending, regarding Agger i totally agree with you he is the best CB in the league, he can play, is very comfortable on the ball and scores only problem is he injury prone.

ED anyone can Please confirm that Carroll £90,000-a-week wages is true or not ?

R-R {Ed001's Note - not.}

Around 70,000 or so I think.

It's £60k a week + 10k + 5K for image rights etc...so it's basically £75k overall {Ed001's Note - I believe it is 50K + bonuses.}

Hi ed, just thinking. You think the club might have a charity friendly match in the summer? All gate receipts go a charity for Brad Jones' son? I think it would be a nice touch.. {Ed001's Note - that would be a good idea, might be worth emailing the club about it.}

The matter has been mentioned a few times now but things are still a little sensitive for the Jones'...club officials are sure it will happen but it is a question of who and when.

11 Jan 2012 11:58:07
Ed001 you mentioned we have scouted right wingers as a priority but who do you think is a realistic option for our right wing ? {Ed001's Note - I would have said Ramirez, but he looks unlike to move in Jan, so I don't know now.}

11 Jan 2012 13:52:43
Think we can all agree we face a massive game for our season tonight, yes I know we have the second leg coming up, but we really need to leave there tonight with a positive result. Obviously no one, except KK & SC, know our team at the moment but I hope they set up a 4-5-1 formation with Stevie breaking from midfield to support big Andy. Having watched city a couple of time they like to send teams down the middle were they are strong so I would like to see our 5 in midfield as , SG, CA, JS/JH, SD and Bellers and would ask CB & SD to stay wide and open up the pitch, Stevie, plus the other two should be more than capable of dealing with City's midfield trio......It's good to see us back involved in big games and this should prove a good test of how far we have come in the last 12 months. Just remember thou boys, losing doesn't mean we are miles away, as City, even without 3 first teamers, have still had 3 years of building a team compared to our 1! By the same token lets not get carried away if we do progress, small steps, people, small steps.........c'mon you red men! - TMac

Instead of using their contacts in Fleet Street to make up stories about Andy Carroll, Mike Ashley(owners of Newcastle and Sports Direct) should be more concerned with the news that Sports Direct broke bidding rules according to market sources of the Daily Mail City and Finance section in the battle with JD Sports to take control of Blacks Leisure. What a Dodgepot.

This is from the Newcastle page. And I thought some of our fans were a bit deluded!

"Newcastle will not be paying Liverpool anything for Andy Carroll. But.....Liverpool are about to fork out between 10-15million + Carroll for Tiote who they want to replace the injured Lucas and push for that 4th champs league spot. Newcastle are planning on using the majority of the money to win the race to sign Samba and a replacement midfielder from abroad (Not sure who) although Liverpool have also offered Coates on loan for the remainder of the season as a good will gesture if we don't land Samba."

Made me laugh.

At last! The only decent presenters on Talks**te Hawksbee and Jacobs ridicule the report about Carroll in this morning newspapers. This after the station (Irani, the Moose and Saggers) has spent all morning reporting the story as a fact.
As H&J said John Henry has been in successful business far to long to lose £25m in less than 1 year on one player.
Maybe it could happen but not for any less than £20m +.

You know it isn't true when there isn't any quotes. And because there isn't any quotes, the newspapers start making things up.

The reports in this morning newspapers about Carroll and Newcastle apparently keen to offer £10m to take him back to Tyneside are simply ridiculous and made up by the Cockney mafia owners and there contacts in the London press (and at that paper no Liverpool supporter should read) in an attempt to unsettle Carroll. From what I see there is absolutely no input into the story by anyone connected to Liverpool and Ashley, Lambias at el seem to be leaking stories to their Fleet street contacts (Rob Beasley) in the same way they did last January when they sold Carroll by leaking the story of Spurs offering £27m for Carroll in the final week of last January in the hope that it would flush out other new bidders and push up the price, which it eventually did.

We should offer them £1M for Tiote

Just read this classic on the Newcastle page.

Newcastle will not be paying Liverpool anything for Andy Carroll. But.....Liverpool are about to fork out between 10-15million + Carroll for Tiote who they want to replace the injured Lucas and push for that 4th champs league spot. Newcastle are planning on using the majority of the money to win the race to sign Samba and a replacement midfielder from abroad (Not sure who) although Liverpool have also offered Coates on loan for the remainder of the season as a good will gesture if we don't land Samba.
Spurs have agreed with Newcastle to sign Tim Krul in the summer to replace Friedel for around 18million.
Also Danny Simpson will sign a new deal by the weekend as Newcastle have agreed to match his terms following his recent form.
Believe what you will.

Been an avid reader of this site for a short while and its about ime Ijoined the family and posted. Truly think Luis will not only stay,but class his permanent form is temporary,and I think he lost a little bit of confidence in front of goal. Don't care what league your playing in,to score 49 goals in a single season in no mean feat at all. Add that to his 3 goals in a World Cup and 4 in the Copa to go along with his international record in general shows he can score goals,and plenty of them at the very highest level. Coupled with a pure lack of break which was bound to catch up with him. I believe he'll be so hungry and ruthless in front of goal,we'll see the best Luis Suarez ever,thanks for reading.

Culligan

Smashing post my friend totally agree with you. He will fire us to the top 4 once he returns refreshed from his ban.

Good afternoon all,

My friend has just pointed out an interesting bit of info, Gerrard, Suarez and Carroll have only played around 78 minutes of football together. Think it's time we all got behind the team instead critising a certain ponytailed geordie. Also hope the Podolski story is true, think we could do some damage with him.

Hi everyone again second post today,

So glad that my post this morning about giving some of the reserves / youth team a chance instead of spending money on new players got so many replies and agrees and disagrees.

Thank you to anyone that replied as your views are always welcome.

But i thought it made a nice change to hear people on this site talking the current squad and ways of making it better. And are the youth team players ready to move up to the first team?

Better then the usual fantasy football that gets posted on this site ie "breaking news" messi seen walking out of melwood stories.

Basil

Basil,

Don't just visit this site during transfer window times but stick around for the whole year through. There are many, many posters on here who you can have a damn good debate with, disagreeing with many without abuse or stupid comments flying around.

If you're lucky you may even get taken under the wing of the illustrious Ed002, who will however attempt to convert you to plastic blue.

Trying to avoid his 'pagan' like attempts are good fun. Every day always seems like we dodged the blue plastic bullet.

And here's a tip. If you want to brown nose the main man (Ed001) just wax lyrically about one Steven Gerrard and how without him we wouldn't have won a thing over the last 11 years! :)

Bob the Red *running for cover* {Ed001's Note - you really are a troublemaker Robert!! Old people really shouldn't be allowed access to the internet.}

An unnamed poster was asking for opinions on Kelly v Johnson for RB. 'agree' for MK disagree for GJ so-on.

I responded but ended up with this rambling post about our full-backs, Gj's contract etc. so I thought i'd post it here for some feed-back. Hopefully someone can clear up the contract questions too.

Humour me if you will.

I hit 'agree' on the post. Meaning I prefer Kelly, but's it was not a critisism of Johnson. Like Red Ollie said - it's great having two good right-backs. Spot on.

Johnson has improved greatly defensively under Dalglish too. People should give him some credit, under Hodgson he was a disaster area of Djimi Traore proportions.

I feel he has become a scapegoat/target again recently. If he had been positioned where Enrique was standing when we conceded against Man City (standing behind the goal line - in the net! - not even on the pitch!) then he (GJ) would have been massacred for it. Enrique got off scot-free.

Enrique has done well, very well (I'm not slating him either) as has Johnson - both are prone to an odd defensive lapse/error, but show me a full-back who isn't (and don't say Paolo Maldini - thats cheating) and chances are you will be lying.

HOWEVER

IF (big 'if' see..) its true that Johnson dictates that he plays as a RB (which I doubt, seeing how he spent a lot of last year at LB) then sell him, as I said though, I don't believe it.

but

'IF' the contract claims are true though, sell him (if someone would buy that is - high wages/high price) as quickly as possible.

We are Liverpool. He is Glen Johnson. I wouldn't even humour a debate on this. If the club are really humouring this nonsense ('IF' true, again, hypothetically speaking here of course...) I would be very disappointed in them.

I Hope the contract stuff is not true (can someone clear this up? Any proof anywhere? I'd love to know!) and if its not, here's hailing imo our finest collection of fullbacks since I started supporting us in '94. Johnson, Kelly, Flanno, Enrique, Robinson. I think the young England LB - (Smith is it?) we have looks good to step in for Aurelio's place at the season's end too, with Robinson moving up as 2nd choice LB.

We won't need a new FB for years!! Fine work.

BJH YNWA. (sticking to the football ed002/eds. Keep up the good work)

ps. I'm addicted to the site this month - and get me my Junior Hoilett!! I'd forgive another £10m of the Carroll fee if we got him for £8m, he'll be worth £20-30m in 2-3 years easily!

I've already forgiven £10m for getting Adam and Enrique for so cheap! Then onto the Downing (I want £10m back! hope he hits some form again - he started brightly) and Henderson fees (I want £5m back. he has potential).

Then we can all be happy.

lol. Long post. Sorry. I just type as I think when in a rambling mood- sorry. Gonna listen to some Led Zepellin now - and just - ramble on! nu nu - nu nu nu nu nu and sing my song! nunu nu nu nu nu nu nu!

Great stuff. Give it a try - brighten your day. Pesky kids and their 'Jay-Zed'.....

rambling again. Sorry.

pps (post-post signature) BJH YNWA.

I prefer Johnson to Kelly at right back as i think he offers more going forward then kelly. But i feel Kelly is a future Liverpool captain but at centre back not right back. But i totally agree with you about the quailty the club has at full back for years to come with Flanno, Robinson, Smith.

No idea about Johnson's contract thou.

Basil

Kelly is better at RB position as at CB(hardly seen him as a CB anyway). I don't understand why people keep on seeing him as a central defender.

BooDaBooze

Kelly must play right back. His pace n crossing ability wud be a waste at cb.

People have you considered the possibility that the club started this (Carroll) rumour? On the day of a big match, maybe they wanted to create pressure for a great performance.

I think the same happened with Rooney and United last week. The Independant, usually a credible newspaper, claims Fergie's had enough of Rooney and prepared to sell. The club and player deny this. The next game (also against city) he gets two goals and helps United win.

I'm not saying either are true, but always a possibility.

Also, i think we can win tonight.
Kompany, Yaya and possibly Silva and/or Balotelli are out. Dzeko and Silva ( if he plays) have seen their performances drop, especially in the case of the former. I expect Nasri (if silva doesn't), Johnson, Aguero and Dzeko (if Balotelli doesn't) to start for City. We can contain them so long ad there aren't any freaks - like last weeks - i suspect Reina will be trying ever so much to prevent.

Peace out,
James

On Carra's last ever game for the club, I think at the end of the game he should take a penalty in front of the kop with Dudek in goal.

Dudek will save it :D

P.s. Hopefully he's already had his last game for the club!

Morning eds and fellow reds,

Think about it, this Carroll story is utter crap, Liverpool and NESV are not going to sign a player for £35 million and 12 months down the line make a £20/25 million loss on him. Carroll will come good he is gonna get a good run of games with stevie, you'll see. Get behind him! And if even one or two of the rumoured players to sign are true it's potentially competition and he needs that, all players do! Think how bad it was 12/13 months ago, we are still in contention for champions league football!

Why arent the sharks circling VILLAREAL like they did SCHALKE & DEPORTIVO at the end of the past season. VILLAREAL are in total disarray and if they have disgruntled players looking to exit now is the time to nab them. I realise Rossi's buy out figure (30m?) is too much but they have plenty of quality players who may be wanting out.

Ok so first of all great site,

second I'd like to say how disappointed I am by reading all the posts about saurez. 1 there is no chance of him leaving 2 very disappointing to read that people would be happy with a 30 mil bid for saurez! He has been our best player this season and you would be happy with 30 mil?

Who would you buy for 30 mil that has played so well and gives any defense in the premier league nightmares? I wouldn't sell saurez for any money!

Carroll - it's pretty funny the stuff the press come out with, no chance of him going anywhere!

We are building a fantastic team for the future and expect more smart signings! YNWA

I notice that Kenny has not given a press conference on the Man City game. Im pleased because the press have been using this forum to reinvent some new stories about LFC.

Its time to take a breather, and for LFC and Kenny to get on with 'business as usual' for a while.

Personally I would not allow newspapers into our press conferences that have been disrespectful to the club over the preceding few weeks, Fergie has been doing this for years.

Any papers or individual reporters who castigate the club for sensationalist headlines will soon learn than we are a proud and honest club, and that we will not tolerate disrespect towards our great club from anyone ...... and this includes players, fans OR THE PRESS

I hope LFC NEVER allow the Daily Mirror and The Mail near the club, their reports about the Suarez affair at times were both untrue and in my view libellous, but they got away with it.

They stepped over the line of neutral journalism when it suited them and have put themselves in the same category as the S** as far as Im concerned.

Tel 1949

Totally agree Tel mate. I would also put The Times in with the rags you've mentioned.

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

Put the Express in that group with that pompous person Mick Dennis in his column practicall on a daily basis almost insinuating that senior members (including Kenny) at Liverpool must be racist. A disgrace.

Tel,
Whilst I agree that The Mirror and some of the other rags have been out of order lately, don't put them in the same low-life category as The S*n mate. Cos they are the lowest of the low for Liverpool fans.
The Real KB

Im sure the Mirror was already banned before the Suarez ordeal. So you see why they were eager to stick the boot in.

Id personally give young Raheem Sterling a chance ahead of Stuart Downing at the moment.

The young lad will know no fear and have a real go, and benefit greatly from playing alongside Stevie G.

Downing never takes responsibility and always looks for an easy ball. His and Adam's delivery quality has been dissapointing so far.

------------ Reina --------------
Johnson - Agger - Skrtel - Enrique
----- Henderson - Adam ---------
--- Sterling - Gerrard - Bellamy ---
----------- Carroll ---------------

I'd also love to see Morgan, Suso, Wisdom and Coady get more involvement within the first team squad. All these young lads are absolute quality.

Red G

Have you them play this season? - no were near first team quality!

Totally agree with you on the younger players to be given more of a chance, as the only way they will improve is by playing in the first team. Young players don't develop fully in the reserves, and never reach there full potensal. Owen, Fowler and Gerrard all got there breaks young. Look at fergie at untied with becks, giggs, scholes etc.

Basil

Downing eventually scored his first goal which will relive so much pressure of him, hes a quality player who will turn out to be one of our better players in the future in my opinion.
Paul the red

"have you seen them play - no were near 1st team qaulity" - obviously whoever posted this hasnt seen them play otherwise he would know they are very close to first team qaulity especially Sterling.
Big Red Ed

Big Red ED.... i have seen them play alot this season and the likes of morgan and sterling have been dissapointing - if they were near first team quality then they would be at least on the bench. they need to go out on loan i feel before they get there proper chance. the only one i think is close to be ready is coady - just my opinion though!

gettin a bit annoyed, what happened to elongated transfer sagas that annoyed everyone during the entirety of the transfer window, nothin goin on at all, think we need a winger badly, downing is a stocking and another forward would be gud, still ament sure about the targets we're bein linked with

"Bob I work at sea so unable to see the reserves often, in your opinion then how long before they are likely to be ready for the first team?
RNred"

To RNred - The majority of the U18 class from last year have really progressed a lot, to the extent they are flooding the reserves this season. I may have been a little harsh on the current crop of U18's as i haven't watched them half as much as i did last season, however on the 2 or 3 times i have seen this year, they are not a patch on the side we had last year with the odd exception.

Looking at the game on Monday night, it's great to see the likes of Coady, Sama, Sterling, Adorjan continuing their progression in partilcuar. When you think we have Wisdom, Robinson and Flanagan to come back in, as well as Shelvey already there (first team squad), then in perhaps in another 12 months time these players will be knocking on the door of the first team squad.

The issue is what to do with them now? The reserve set up as a whole isn't conducive to their complete development, however loaning them out too early and having little input to their development which, at this particular time is crucial.

Where do you decide to pitch their standard for loaning out? If you take Shelvey, who to be fair, is/was further advanced in terms of development than most, the loaning to Blackpool was the making of him, even though it was for a short period.

He went to a club, with a good manager who has a definite theory on playing good football. What would happen if say for example Coady was loaned out to Accrington Stanley for the rest of the season. I've seen this standard a fair few times this season and not many like to play through the midfield. So would Coady's development be stunted or enhanced?

Certainly with Rodolfo overseeing him, you cannot ask for anyone better. But if he goes elsewhere to a lower league team, you get what you pay for. Lower league, lower quality of coaches etc.

Without adding to the hype. The player who has progressed the most has been Raheem Sterling. Just turned 17, whilst he may have started the off field issues that affect fame and fortune to one so young, the club need to ensure they do their utmost to keep him on the right track. However he is getting physically stronger all the time. Still very green and with lots to learn but shoving him into the first team too soon would have a detrimental effect in my opinion. I'm sure the club have a plan set up already for next year.

I still agree in principle with Rafa's theory that our reserves should be in the football league pyramid system, however fully aware of the practical issues. Reserve football nowadays still regionalised makes no sense. We need to up the standard.

Bob the Red

Bob cheers for the info mate. Do you think there would be any value in loaning them out to clubs abroard? Teams like Ajax, Porto, Barca have great youth set ups maybe a 6 month loan to these could be a solution? Although the club may want to keep them playing as a team? I think they must agree with you though about playing at a higher level as is that not the thinking behind the Next Gen series?
RNred

The player that has really stood out for me this season Sir Bob, is Silva. He has been our best player in the NextGen competition and progressed more than any other player this season imo. He looks quicker, stronger, more skillful and more confident, in taking players on. I really like this kid, he's a sweet left peg and bags of skill.

Blair Mayne YNWA JFT96

Ps. For anyone who didn't know, we play Spurs in the QF's of the NextGen competition.

Absolutely agree with regard to the reserve system and the idea that it should be included (obviously opt in) in the regular league system, a la Spain.

Agree with you Blair mate. He's one of those players who gets you off your plastic seat whenever he's on the ball.

The Next Gen series shout by RNred and Blair are great shouts. We have got to stiffen up competition drastically in the reserves. It would save us having to go elsewhere to get them the experience needed. Spurs away is very shortly if i'm not mistaken?

Bob the Red

Agree with both Bob and Blair to some degree about Silva and Sterling... although personal shout for Wisdom, he is a monster of a player and for me a not-to-distant future star and leader.... no CB concerns over next few years!

Demba ba failed a medical at Stuttgart he the failed a medical at stoke he then failed a medical at west ham who signed him only on a pay as you play deal
He then failed a medical at Newcastle hence why he has such a low get out Claus so either party can easily get out of the contract.

Totally agree m8, we should be trying to push our youngsters for the 1st team.

I think it is David Amoo and Michael Ngoo .

I look at some of the players like Sterling , Morgan and Suso and see they must have a big future however , I just can't see them making an impact anytime soon .

They are like 17 years old and I reckon they are still some way off the first team . I look forward to seeing them anyway .

eds/macca do we not have any quality young talent coming through the acadamy at the mo? everyone is banding names about but arent there strikers at the club already who could be given a chance like suso? dont get me wrong would love to see world class coming in soldado would be my choice but we also need people to create the chances javi martinez of athletic would be quality in the prem. cheers {Ed001's Note - Morgan and Adorjan would be the two possible forwards for me, Adorjan seemed to make massive strides last year.}

Adorjan has something of Bergkamp about him, I really hope he, Morgan and Sterling get a chance soon. However, they are all still 17-18 years olds and I'm sure that the club is going to go for experience in the short term.

I think suso is a better player then adorjan, they play in the same mould and I think suso is more technically gifted. He's delivery from dead balls is quality! Him and sterling excite me the most as I think that they stand out above the others and are a abit special. St. Helens Red

What was the score with Andy Carrolls departure from Newcastle. The Toon hate him because they think he put in a transfer request, But I thought Ashley had asked him to leave in Newcastles best interests as he thought the offer was too good to turn down?

Any one know which one is correct.

Cheers

I heard Newcastle got offered 30 million but turnt it down and was offered 35 then, so my guess is Ashley made him leave for the money, seems to be the kind of person Ashley is. Not to mention that Toon only valued Carrol at 1.5 million the season before

Please people get a grip and understand rumours are runours for a reason.

In the past few days although Liverpool quite obviously need a striker are now going to be sellog Suarez to Real, Carroll to Newcaste and Kuyt to Galatassary (although I expect him to be gone either Jan or Summer). Well that will leave us with. Bellamy who himself can only play once a week.

Yes of course the usual arguments will come back to me of yeah but we could buy, but let's be honest we are chasing the top 4 and we aren't goin to make that mch disruption to our team.

Enjoy tonight, let's get to Wembley!

Sisco

I completely agree m8, i'd also like to ask that we stop asking about Demba Ba, who clearly isnt coming to Liverpool, Rhodes fellow from Huddersfield or wherever he plays as he's had 1 good game against a lower league team and everyone thinks he's premier league quality and the same with Wilfred Zaha, who had 1 good game and everyone thinks he's premier league quality, i understand the last 2 are young, but they've had 1 good game or have a good goal ratio against lower league teams, doesnt mean Liverpool are guna put them in the front line against Prem teams, especially as replacements for Suarez, Carroll and Kuyt

See Xabi made the Fifa world 11. Wonder what Gary Gillespie makes of that. 2 or 3 times on LFC tv I've heard him say he thinks Charlie Adam is a better player. At Gary's height the air must be pretty thin. Its the only sane explanation.

Xabi alonso is the best holding midfielder/passer in world football. shame on rafa for driving him out !!!!!gillespie errrm just........ no
5gold stars

There's a lot of snobbery towards the English game from FIFA. Xabi didn't have a better 2011 than players like De Jong, Barry and Fletcher

Red Ollie

Lol. I love Gary Gillespie's comments.

I love how he still can't understand that you can't put in tackles like in his day - I always have a chuckle as he gets outraged (again) at what he sees as 'clean' two footed lunges for a 50-50 ball.

I love it as he gets frustrated with Dirk - continually asking his co-commentator why Dirk won't let the ball run across his body to adopt an attacking stance and go on the attack, but rather turns to collect the ball and go backwards.

"Why man? why?" Gary would ask his bewildered co-presenter angrily, almost as if he had the answers and was keeping them to himself.

"Someone really needs to have a word with him".

You could almost hear his head shaking in disbelief every time.

Most of all - when we we have been beaten by a rubbish side - and all that is good and just in the world seems lost to a chasm of darkness.... I love it when Gary goes silent, just for a few moments.... and then growls.......

'Sometimes you've just gotta take one on the chin'.

I always feel better for some reason.

Makes me 'man up' - or something like that.

Gary Gillespie. He's kinda silly yes, he's old school, but I think he's just great. He makes me laugh - even under Hodgson, he got me through some hard times back then.

He really doesn't have much time for fancy foreign-types who don't hack people down though, as you point out. Alonso was always a bit 'fancy' for his tastes.

Which reminds me.

I also like how Gary chuckles at every mistimed tackle/hack from Charlie Adam.

"Oh dearie me, hehe, heheheh".

"Charlie might need te watch himself a wee bit now, heheh"

He loves it. lol.

BJH YNWA.

Xavi is definitely not a holding midfielder. I'm taking the point about de Jong, Barry and Fletcher as tongue-in-cheek - it had beeter hve been!

Xabi alonso was the heart beat of our team when he left we fell apart

Hi everyone,

I only ever come on this site during the transfer windows, so i've been on here quite a bit over the last few weeks. Seen nothing concrete about jan signings.

But last time i was on here during the summer, everybody was saying Liverpool were building a team for the future around Carroll, Henderson, Coates, with players like Kelly, Wilson, Spearing and Shelvey already at the club and having played for the first team. And an academy the envy of the premiership with Sterling, Coady, Flanno, Robinson, Suso, Morgan, Silva, Ngoo, Adoran.

With Gerrard, Carra, to guide these youngsters the furture was going to be amazing!

Now everybody is screaming out for some new blood to be brought in, shouldn't we be blooding these youngsters? Before they become another lost generation playing reserve team football behind closed doors, at a big club! While fans scream out for big money quick fix buys!

I would rather these hungry young players were finally given a chance to shine.

Basil

They are being given a chance. But our defence is superb so Kelly and Wilson aren't getting a look in, and Shelvey/Coady are no improvement on Henderson and Adam right now. We are lacking players in 2 positions: right-wing and up front. Sterling and Morgan maybe should be given a chance, but they're 17, that's very young. Far better to get a couple of players in, particularly on the wings where we only have 1 recognised player (Downing)

Red Ollie

I agree that some of these youngsters will make the grade Basil, but at the minute I jut don't think they're developed enough physically. They definitely have the talent, but I don't think we'll see the likes of Sterling/Suso regularly until at least 2014. I think we may see a few cameos but nothing solid for a while.

Curtiss

I agree with you to a certain extent Basil. But I think alot of these kids are still not ready for full first team duty.
I do however think some i.e Coady and Sterling should be on the bench for certain games as they do deserve a chance.

But for the rest of this season and next season I think we need to buy to stay with the other top clubs.

Gaelic Red.

Thank you to the people that agree with me.

I think i missed part of my rant out by forgetting to saying if liverpool sign 2 new players this jan and 3 or 4 next summer. Then when will these young players ever get a chance?

Of all the players Liverpool have been linked with this winter i like the look of Hoilet from blackburn. 21 years old has 2 good feet, and can play on either side or through the middle, has an eye for goal, has premier league experanice and his best years still in front of him. Could be a steal for about the 5 to 8 million mark, as his contract runs out this summer.

But by buying Hoilet it could block the way for Sterling, Suso or Sliva to make their way into the team.

Basil

I agree, would love to see the youngsters given a chance. Cant see why we cant put 1 or 2 on the bench each game and if were winning bring them on for the last 20-30mins.

WB

I think the problem is that the kids are still a bit to young especially in the positions we are short in. In an ideal world we would carry on with what we have and get into the top 4 whilst scouting the world for great young talent to add to our kids, but it looks like we are going to have to bring in one or two now to give us a chance at top 4 as the team seems to be very left side biased and short of goals.
I think Marveaux failing his medical forced our hand a bit with the Downing signing and that we might have been looking at a right winger at the time (Young went to united?). And if I remember rightly we were looking at Connor Wickham before Sunderland spent big, so I think KK knew before the season started where we were lacking and hopefully we will put that right in the next three weeks. That's just my thoughts, the Ed's will have more insight and may see it all differently.

We need 3 players who can play wide on either side. We need Hoilett. It won't halt the progress of the young players in the future as many of our current options for the LW/RW slots will be gone in 1-2 seasons.

Options currently for the LW/RW pos include -

Downing, Maxi, Bellamy, Kuyt - also, due to the lack of depth in wide areas, the likes of Henderson and Shelvey have been shoed in there at times, as may Gerrard now he has returned.

Of these - I would imagine that Maxi, Bellamy and Kuyt will be here at LFC beyond 1-2 years. I also reckon that Henderson and Shelvey are seen as part of the future in more central midfield roles.

That just leaves Downing really who is being wasted on the right atm.

Hoilett and Downing would represent a good start on re-building this ageing area of the side and injecting some badly needed pace.

Suso and Sterling are the perfect age to be long term competition for these two. Both are (just recently turned) 17 as I understand it. I wouldn't begrudge another signing too, the two lads aren't ready immediately, they need a gradual introduction to the side. Bellamy has a 2 year deal. He may well see it out. Kuyt and Maxi will be gone by the summer.

Hoilett is essential.

Academy the envy of the premiership? Who was the last good player to come out your youth team? Hmm?

I will get replies of Kelly or Spearing yes? THEY ARE SH1T!

Now players like Pogba, Morrison, Tunnicliffe, McEachran, Barkley etc are better examples than anything you have got.

Just posted a post under construction by mistake there. bugger.

Thats annoying. If it was posted - I'm sure you get the general idea. When it comes to widemen - the more the merrier.

If the eds spot it and keep it out.

Imo Hoilett, Downing, and even 1 more signing (to replace Bellamy at the end of his 2 year deal) together with the kids (Suso and Sterling) who should emerge from the youth team (maybe even Silva?) would give us a strong squad, well stacked in the wide areas - which we will need in the future.

Our chance at the top 4 would be boosted greatly by Hoilett signing - he is better than anything we have currently out wide.

BJH YNWA.

Hoilett isnt good enough for us imo. A more accomplished winger like adam johnson wud be a better signing to fire us into the top4.
Indian Buzzer

Cheers Indian Buzzer, Adam Johnson is a good player, but didn't he just sign a new contract? Mancini repeadedly says how important he is to his plans too.

Mancini blasted him on his workrate recently - but if Johnson improves this, he'll be fine.

Johnson would cost a lot more than Hoilett too (if it was actually possible).

I hope we sign Hoilett and he wins you over though. I'd take Johnson too though, and i'd be ecstatic! I just can't realistically see it happening.

BJH YNWA.

i know this is not a rumour but i seriously think people should stop bashing carrol. When we start providing him with some good service and use the width of the field a little better im sure he will start to shine. he may not be world class but i do expect him to score a shed load of goals throughout a season once he is settled, getting regular games and is high on confidence. he's a big guy and players like Carrol often do cause defenders a lot of stress. I really feel a lot of you so called LFC supporters will eat humble pie...just not this year perhaps. He is still young don't forget and id actually say he will turn out to be a lot more of a natural goal scorer than Suarez

Gareth

The reason we dont like him is because his workrate is poor, and at the moment he is not scoring and this is not helping him. Whats worse is that when he plays he stifles Liverpools free flowing football

S

Have you watched him play. His movement is awful.

I think more people have got a problem with kenny buying him for 35 million then Carrol's ability.

Ed, what's going on with Charlie Adam? First 10 games of the season I hadn't a problem with him but after that he's been playing very average football, giving away posession and being caught in posession on numerous occasions. He also seems to only last around 60 minutes in games. Charlies fitness levels dont seem to be anywhere near close to the rest of the squads.

Rocky {Ed016's Note - Blackpool probably did not have as good a training program as other top clubs. Well as you write it out seems pretty obvious what has happened. How many seasons has Adam played fully? It is a tough physical challenge, like a marathon, it still takes practice, people are human.
A contributing factor would be his over-eagerness at the start of the season, pushing himself hard. He will be on a good fitness program and I think next season we will see the best of Adam. Remember players in his position gets better when they learn to not run around but can read the play so they know the where the ball will end up rather than rushing because they mistimed or it. A long with most of the other new players he was more cautious first half of the season and got more comfortable and took more chances. I think he is a fantastic player, he will be similar to Alonso but not better. My only personal problem with Adam is that he has not been able to be a leader, in the beginning of the season there was a real time to step up while Gerrard was out and stake a claim as a leader in the team, but I just think he was a little starry eyed still.}

Alonsos last season ed was his best by far, his first was good as well in the middle of his liverpool career it was ok, poor at times, midfield players peak 29-30 alonsos age at his last season, i agree about charlie adam he will learn not to run as much but read the game more,lucas is injured and covered a lot for his wondering forward it will all come good. Im pleased with what ive seen so far this season we just need to be more clinical, good times are not far away fine lines rocky and ed

gee man

I also think adam has greatly missed lucas. The two were developing a good understanding and complimented each other pretty well. Lucas was effectively adams' legs and allowed adam more freedom to do what he was best at. It is due to his lack of mobility though, that i believe adam is better suited to a three man midfield where he has more licence to play his own game. I think he has the potential to be an important player for us but doubt he will ever be the dominant figure and lead a midfield.

Cheers
Greggers

I fully agree with everything you say Ed016 and thanks for the reply. I like him aswell as a footballer, i think one of the things aswell is he must demand taking the free kicks and corners, he was excellent at Blackpool when he stood over the ball for set plays, I understand he's still only 25 and has plenty of time to improve on things, but Henderson is starting to impress now and Gerrard and Spearing also starting to get back in the side i just fear he'll be left out if he doesn't step it up. Love the site and great work from all the Eds in giving their opinion and answering all people questions. Keep up the good work.

i know you cant tell much about a player from a youtube video but when i was watching one on podolski he reminded me of robbie fowler a bit and i thought hes just what we need...
what do people think? in the transfer windows i get sum kind of mad bullsh*t disease where i think that the players we're linked with are the answer so feedback would be welcome...

peter

Podolski and villa are the two players who finish ALMOST as good as Robbie IMO.

He good in air and run fast. saw him score few match with germany.

Cheers Sam O {Ed005's Note - Over three weeks left of the window actually. And if you wish to know our views on anything please use the search function or scroll down through the pages. Also if you are unhappy with anything in regards to the eds or the website simply do no read nor post here.}

It is a rumours site you know....... not a concrete evidence site.............lol {Ed005's Note - Thank goodness, there is hope out there.}

Barry Silkman has history with Mike Ashely. He bought Demba Ba to Newcastle and He is also Yakubu Agent.

A piece of trivia completely unrelated to LFC. But thanks. Here's another: if you catch a sturgeon off the coast of the British Isles you must by law present it to the Prince of Wales

cozinoz {Ed016's Note - If you are on the Walls of Chester at Midnight you can shoot a Welshman below the walls. with a bow and arrow and it will not be murder (Random note for a random post)}

If a pregnant lady needs to pee and there is no bathroom then a policeman must offer his helmet by law

Wtf are youse guys smoking

gee man

It is illegal to die infront of the Queen of England at Buckingham palace.

Ed 016, does the arrow have to hit him at midnight or just after? just wondering

Ed's just out of curiosity what is the basis upon you make your comments? This isn't an attack it's just for some background so I can make an opinion of my own as to the credibility of your statements?
Great site, I spend hours on here and I hope the Podolski interest becomes a bid in the near future!

RichTheRed91. {Ed005's Note - That's perhaps a question for Ed001 or Ed002 however they are not under any obligation to to prove their credibility to anyone with all due respect. People can choose if and when they read or post on the site and whether they see it as credible or not matters not to any of the eds, all they have to do is stop reading/posting here.}

Does anyone else think that Rafael Benítez would make for a better director of football than Damien Comolli. I really havn't been impressed with his scouting of players.

Rafeal Benitez always knew how to find players.

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit mate...

I don't think comolli has been in his job long enough for us to fully judge him, plus rafa had many horrendous buys
Hibsylfc

Raffa back as manager under the new owners when kennys work is done ,on one condition - paco ayerstyn, is his no 2
jeff

I agree but Rafa would never take that role. I would love Rafa to take over from The King in three years or however long Dalglish wants to stay.

Rafa wanted to buy some great players, but was never allowed for what ever reason.

I must say it would be useful having someone with such a deep knowledge of the Spanish market. Spain's footballers are the best in the world. Rafa bought Arbeloa, Alonso, Riera, Torres and Aurelio from Spain when they weren't the best, imagine who he could find now they're the best in the world!

Red Ollie

Exactly..david silva was his first choice...would have beena dream wtih him and gerrard in the mid...torres would have never moved..so we would have never bought downing, adam and cole....

If Rafa had been backed financially we would be rivaling Barca right now, with a fantastic academy and some brilliant players. However he wasn't given any money and lied to about being given funds in the sense the owners would let them go all the way to the end of the deal and pull out

ed016

Nunez, Morientes, Degen, Babel, Gonzalez, Kroncamp, Dossena.............

cozinoz

Villa, silva and dani alves enough said we would have been unreal. Just thinking about it makes me hate them two cowbos even more

KopEndDannyLFC

When u want cheap buy u have to accept there is a gamble. Rafa want Silva and Villa. but not support by money. owner tell him sale to buy option and he have to go for cheap player.

Cozinoz, even barca have made some bad buys like maxwell, ibrahimovic, affelay(very injury prone). If rafa had brought silva n aguero had tom n jerry provided the funds, we wud be one of the top teams in europe.
Indian Buzzer

I honestly love KK to bits but I would absolutely love for Rafa to return. I wasn't born in the KK era so I'm much more bias in Rafa's favour though.

Vorro

Indian Buzzer he spent 9m on Babel, he won zero for 5 years, his teams played dull football and his ego was bigger than the club. We have a lot better chance of being one of the top Euro teams under KK.

cozinoz

KK will have to do better than carrol, downing n adam if we wnt to be a top team in europe. There is a reason why british players except gerrard n shrek underperform in europe.

Hey eds

Just a question.
How has the best shot among the players today?
I mean,hardest - fastest shot/foot?

Thanks. {Ed005's Note - Among the players in the LFC team or in the world? In the world I couldn't say lol. In the LFC we have a few who have nice foots. Gerrard obviously, Adam, Carroll seems to have a bullet left foot. Would say Gerrard.}

My money would be on Dan Agger since Riise left.

Red7.

Riise way back when...

Roberto Carlos also...

What about outside lfc? I dont mean you should know all football players in the worls,but amongst the players you know about and have some info about?

Thanks again.. {Ed005's Note - I have never made any claims of the sort that you mention above. So clarify that before posting such dribble and making a fool of yourself. Better yet, if you are unhappy about the site and wish to use sarcasm to display this then simply don't post here, you would be doing other posters who wish to discuss and interact a favour, as well as the eds.}

Ibrahimovic anyone?

What was wrong about that post,that made you so defensive?
I just wanted to know among all the other players outside LFC. And by that I mean among players you know,I wrote that to avoid the answer like I don't know all players,so I tried to simplify it. Sorry if my English isn't good enough,but I don't have English as a language nor second language.

So would be nice to get an answer instead bs statements about something else. So please don't take that tone with me aslong as I am not taking it with you. {Ed005's Note - Don't backtrack. You were being a sarcastic little get. And your English, all of a sudden, seems perfectly ok. I stand by my statement.}

That's called IPhone autocorrect!

But fine,be an angry defensive kind a guy. I know what I ment and will sleep just fine.

So if there's anyone else that know about a football player that is at the top regarding hardest shot/foot,please post it here. Thanks!

What happened there...am I missing something?

dmedly {Ed005's Note - A misunderstanding. That'll be the last on the topic.}

I'd say Carragher, you would almost miss him in the games now, if he was playing in the team our possession in games would be alot lower, he hacks the ball up field with some power in that right foot of his, mostly with his toe to be fair

Rocky

Daniel van Buyten recently burst a ball from a free-kick. Either he has a hard shot or the ball was duff. Also, hasn't Hitzlsperger got the record for the hardest hit free-kick? Check out You Tube, blink and you'll miss it!

I'd say Danny Agger.

What about jimmy floyd hasselbaink?!

Jimmy floyd hasslebank could hit 'em!
Craig

Hi craig.

You know if Nigel Hasselbaink has the same foot as his nephew jimmy F H?

Never seen this Nigel fella play,but his young and playes in a scottish team i think.

Dejan Stankovic? When he catches them, he really does. Or Hitzlesberger (spelling?).

After January
Reina
Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique
Gerrard Adam
Downing Hoilett
Suarez Carroll

Subs: Doni, Kelly, Carragher, Henderson, Maxi, Bellamy, Shelvey

Just sign Hoilett for cheap in jan to give us a bit extra in final push for a top 4 spot, if we sell Kuyt/Maxi then maybe look at Luuk De Jong or Poldolski in Jan too otherwise leave major transfers until the summer.
