Great to hear we've had a bid accepted for Stewart Downing, he is a very good player who can give us natural width on the left hand side - something we have missed since the early days of Albert Riera. The reported £20m is a lot of money, but I'm sure he will prove he is worth such a fee.

The owners have yet again proved they're willing to back the manager in order to get us back into the top 4, and they must be commended.

eds do you think we will sign another winger? i think we need at least one more winger as downing will be our first and dirk will be used as striker next season, i think adam johnson would be perfect and with either cissokho or enrique and another striker(roux looks worth a punt) would make us a real force next season YNWA

the freshmaker {Ed009's Note - I think there is a chance. Left back and centre back are probably more of a priority and thats why its impossible to know, they seem to be addressing one or two positions at a time.}

heard a rumor that we have scouts watching uraguayn left wing back alvaro pereria. 17.5 mil being the price.
in my opinion is a very good player
i would have him or cissokho for left back

For all the Downing doubters ...

(Ripped from the BBC site)

DID YOU KNOW?
Continue reading the main story
Downing completed more crosses in open play - 135 - than any other player in the Premier League last season. No other player has beaten that amount for any of the last three campaigns.

Lu Lin...what a player ha That little fella could solve our left back problem haha....ah only tongue n' cheek but he actually was quite lively against our lads today On another note, i thought it was great to see the enthusiasm and excitement etched on Kenny's face today He just inspires confidence in everyone, love the guy The future's bright...

Cheers,
Red Pedro.

Alot of money is being spent which is nice to see the owners sticking to their words But are these players going to win us the league? We need to be bringing in top class 4 me.

13 Jul 2011 23:06:43
Now that we've got Downing, we should buy another winger, after we get an LB. If Stewart gets a serious injury, we are back to square 1.

Blair Mayne YNWA

Ps. Welcome to LFC, Stewart.

is it just me who thinks Pacheco will never be a top class player for us? you might think i'm mad but i have never really rated him, Dont get me wrong i think he is a good player but some people think he is the dogs and the games i have seen him in he has never really got going

What a great 24 hours for the Reds:

Konchesky sold

Coady and Flanagan give us a taste of our bright future with a couple of spot on shows in the heat in China.

Downing finally signs to provide the expert service he can for Carroll.

Next stop Enrique at LB.
Dann at CB.

And if we can shift a bit more deadwood then watch out for a new striker too.

The future is bright

I know the downing deal was by far the worlds worst kept secret but I honestly beleieve kk n dc have a lot more tricks up their sleeves and can expect some shock deals, YNWA roll on sunderland, cannot wait for the new season most optimistic and promising summer for years what do u think eds? {Ed009's Note - I can't wait for next season.}

13 Jul 2011 22:57:32
Hi Eds, how does downing fit into our policy of age? Hes 27. Also what do you make of the player? Thanks {Ed009's Note - He is a very good player. It is easy to go overboard with the youth thing - take a look at Arsenal.}

13 Jul 2011 22:54:17
Evening eds and reds . Once again kenny gets his man another big thank you to j henry and nesv cheers psv, an out and out winger 10 years in the waiting.

Hey ed(s),

Do you guys know when the medical will be taking place and if also he will be joining the squad or staying back?

Thanks
Kindest Regards {Ed009's Note - I imagine it will happen tomorrow, but thats simply because I can't see why not. I don't know if he will join up with the squad. I see no reason why not again. More will come out in the next few days no doubt.}

13 Jul 2011 22:48:08
ed been out allday didnt watch the game.did adam play well.what bout pacheco.did anyone stand out.thanks.DORSET RED {Ed009's Note - Adam played very well in the half he played. Pacheco demonstrated his undeniable ability, but also his questionable temperament at times. Coady showed his promise.}

13 Jul 2011 22:47:48
ed what will downing bring to the team in ur opinion? and r we better off with him than if we had got young?

red blood {Ed009's Note - he will beat his man and whip in a cross. He is better than Young and will play for the team far more to boot.}

13 Jul 2011 22:45:52
gettt in thereee downing is here fee agreed i genuinly believe we are a decent left back away from being a serious threat next year and possibly another winger. also it looks like we are going to keep aquilani which im actually pleased about, i really think he deserves a second chance. ed just a quick question, in terms of center midfield next season with all these players we have in the position who do you think will start there. or if you have time let me know about the whole formation. for me lucas had a great season last year so the signing of henderson confused me, adam didnt because we have been in need of a player like him since alonso departed, but if gerrard is gunna play center midfield then that leaves one more place? unless you play gerrard behind the front men which then means you have to sacrifice a striker or play 3 at the back, sorry if i rambled on but your thoughts please ed.

13 Jul 2011 22:45:29
fair play , the new owners are deffo willing to spend.....happy days ahead

ive been using this site for a while now and ive noticed most of the eds are ladys if not all. funny (not in a bad way) is there any male eds? {Ed009's Note - I'm the only male here and the monthly meetings are my personal slice of heaven.}

13 Jul 2011 22:29:30

Still no doni thought you said its been wrapped up. Also why was aqualani number 99 is it sign that he is definitely going {Ed009's Note - nobody said it had been wrapped up. Just that it will probably happen. There are still a few wage details to iron out - he isn't really that keen on the wages on offer.}

13 Jul 2011 22:17:12
Currently on a Defence Road Safety Course, was in the middle of lectures during the game. Will anyone put up some ratings out of 10 for performance of the players? Would be appreciated.

I know its early days but I would like to know who is on form. Cant watch in on LFC.TV due to pants tinternet signal.

Much obliged.

Vinnie LFC {Ed009's Note - check banter - someone has already done an in depth analysis of all the players. I'm not so sure you can relate performances to numbers with any real accuracy.}

13 Jul 2011 22:13:42
ed009 i was just wondering is it only u in there? :P u imo are one of the funniest eds and put your opinion into your posts aswell... just wanted to say thanks to u and the other eds aswell... btw unless my macca page isnt working properly he must be on holiday i have nothing since the 2/7/11 {Ed009's Note - you've scared everyone else away buddy. Thanks a lot for the kind words.}

13 Jul 2011 22:03:53
Since we're planning to sign another CB, which current centre back is most likely to leave? {Ed009's Note - Kyriagkos.}

13 Jul 2011 21:59:07
Hi guys i have a good feeling that kk will be going for ardan turan; this is not heard from the grapevine rumour, it is just my spider sense tingling.

1. he can do the job of suarez (mesmerizing defenders) and do it well. ( he can complement suarez or filling in for him)

2. he comes with load bag of tricks

3. he has a good balance and is creative

4. he runs and moves well with the ball and exciting

5. great techniques and exceptional skills

6. he is a fan of the institution called lfc

7. value for money

8. and he is fan friendly.

on a lighter note, the real reason why torres did not play well for chelsea last season was because they failed to collect torres 'how to use' manual from liverpool. i heard they will be coming for it soon. i will say don't give it to them.

jokes over

I am a fan of an institution called lfc not of the manager /players.

Nigerian fan (tooblac)

Have also heard about forest wiz kid mcgugan, don't no much about the lad but looks a real talent. Definitly looks more promising than shelvey Lucas aquialiani and all the other wasters we have

13 Jul 2011 21:48:20
Ed I saw you said earlier that you expect 4 signings including doni and downing, other being lb and cb. So you think we won't buy another striker (even though we are selling ngog) and another winger ( when we know that henderson is predomanantly a rw and we have no other proper rw) Just wondering what you thought on those positions {Ed009's Note - once we have secured the positions I mentioned, perhaps we will press on and sign a few more players. I am not so sure that we will sign another striker, Kuyt can ably deputise for Carroll and Suarez when needed. Another winger is more likely and I believe our pursuit of Bastos highlights this.}

I understand it was a friendly today but it was a good game barring the late lapses. For anyone who didn't see it here's a round up of how I saw it.

Humidity, match fitness and opposition worth mentioning as factors.

Hansen - Looked composed and had no chance for 2nd and 3rd goals.

Jones - Same for Brad, looked compsed, largely untested and even did some skill to wrongfoot an incoming player.

Gulacsi - Should have commanded coming out for the ball for the 1st goal, but made a good save with inside of his ankle.

Kelly - Fairly solid performance, but a bit rusty and couldn't get back for one of the goals.

Carragher - Solid and vocal as usual

Wilson - Looked a lot better in his natural position as a centre half as opposed to left back.

Flanaghan - Great steely performance again.

Poulsen - Played surprisingly well, scored the opener.

Shelvey - Did well, but gave away ball high up the pitch which allowed counter for a goal.

J Cole - Looked trimmer and leaner, a good performance from Joe, crossed for one of the goals.

Pacheco - Looked lively when on the ball, created a great chance for himself but put it wide, albeit his right foot.

N Gog - Worked hard up front and scored well although he looked as though he had miscontrolled the ball whllst coming through.

2nd Half

Wisdom - Nerves obviously played a part and drifted in centrally when back four were pinned back, showing his CB instinct, leaving wide men unmarked. But did his best defending and getting forward and still a talent for sure.

Agger - Captain for the second half, played well shielding and providing cover when needed, same as Kyriagos for the end, to a lesser extent.

Coady - Mature performance and scored a good goal, very composed did not look out of place at all.

Kyriagos - Fairly solid until the shambles at the end, lazyness/tiredness crept in.

Robinson - Played well again, good pace and desire, strong and consistent in the tackle.

Aquilani - Played ok, looked fit and sharp, good vision throughout the half, would shirk a standing challenge one instance and go in for a hefty aerial challenge the next.

Adam - Didn't look out of place from the moment he came on, great passing intent, good desire and movement, though I will expect a lot better from corners, which I'm sure will happen.

Rodriguez - Largely uninvolved but made the most of the ball when he had it. Missed an opportunity on his right from a tight angle.

Kuyt - Highlighted why he shouldn't play on the right, tries to beat a man instead of getting half a yard and putting the ball in, beating a man is not his game, but did ok and contributed.

Carroll - Grew into the game but was largely unimpressive in front of goal, goal and assist granted. Linkup and hold up play was decent.

Don't mean to over analyse just my opinion of the performances as I'm missing the football haha They all did well in fairness and it was only our first game back, but good to start with a winning mentality even now which we have lacked in previous years.

The A man

13 Jul 2011 21:44:00
hey ed r v looking 2 sign 1 winger only coz there r only downing talks everywherevivek {Ed009's Note - One is the priority at the minute without a doubt. Once we secure all the positions we are deemed to need we may well look at another.}

13 Jul 2011 21:31:28
Evening eds & fellow reds , you should ask all the people who hav supposedly spotted cissoko at john lennon airport today to post what time they saw him to c if they r telling the truth , great site as always ......Steve jft96 {Ed009's Note - I'm almost certain he isn't in liverpool.}

13 Jul 2011 21:25:15
idiots saying cissokho is in liverpool, if he really was dont you think sky sports news would be all over it by now suggesting hes there for medical and stuff lol so nope he isnt in liverpool

Ed pls advice on why is Liverpool not buying this guy Lewis mcgugan. D crazy1 {Ed009's Note - maybe because we can't buy every decent youngster.}

To ed9 on the post about aquilani to napoli. Lazio are romas arch rivals not napoli so mayb aqua could go to them {Ed009's Note - Napoli are also one of Roma's biggest, and its important to remember the volatility of Roma's fanbase.}

13 Jul 2011 20:27:39
Ed, why aren't Amoo and Eccelstone on the tour of Asia? Surely they should be there along with the other youngsters? {Ed009's Note - I think they may well both be on their way. Amoo certainly needs to move on.}

13 Jul 2011 20:27:19
not many rumours tonight is the site down? {Ed009's Note - no, the other Ed's are just lazy ;).}

13 Jul 2011 20:21:23
Well for a start, we will obviously going for someone to support Carroll and I would rather have Lennon than downing so we can have Mata for the RW.
I dont actually rate spearing tbh (but that is my personnal opinion).
And Yes I would have suarez all day over Gerrard. Gerrard should be used more sparingly like Giggs for UTD.
I still love him just not as good any more and injury prone.
I also think Aqua should be used he is great and wasn't given a full/fair run and has bags of potential.

--------------------------------------------------

Lennon doesn't give in crosses, he just makes speedy runs and rarely gets past players. A lesser version of Walcott. Downing is a player who can deliver GOOD crosses, hence one of the reasonw e bought Henderson.

Giggs is 37, Gerrard is 31. That is why he is used as a substitute. When Gerrard, Suarez and Carroll all played, we beat City 3-0. One of the goals came from a cross from Meireles, who will probably leave this window.

Watch the match today? Who would you rather play in his position? He didn't fit in, Gerrard would have played his poition much better. Not that I don't want him, he just doesn't fit in.

The winger we are after sin't after the ones who can make those speedy runs and versatile playmaker, who can also be used as an attacking mid, we are looking for someone who can deliver crosses consistently, which is why I suspect we ahve not bid for Mata and why I believe Adam Johnson would be an extremely good buy.

Just my story, feel free to comment.

EDs, with the downing transfer on ice until villa sign a replacement, do you think we will look to solve the LB problem in the mean time? Thanks {Ed009's Note - we may well do. We know there is interest in Cissokho and he is available. If the club see it fit I see no reason why we won't press on with the deal.}

13 Jul 2011 19:50:06
There's a report on Givemefootball.com that we've been told that Downing will cost £25m. It's a pretty spot on website.

13 Jul 2011 19:44:34
ed001 this isnt a rumour i was wondering if you come back to the rumour page as i think ur a brillant ed cheers {Ed009's Note - she is a bit busy getting her pedicure done at the moment - it takes her a while - but I want her back too.}

13 Jul 2011 19:41:02
All these people who say they have seen Cissokho...leave it out, up until recently you never heard of him and now you would recognise him in a packed airport?????? Why would he be here when we probably havent even agreed a fee yet?

13 Jul 2011 19:29:23
anyone know where i can watch the full highlights of todays friendly for free?

Marco Marin cud up for Liverpool move and werder bremen are willing to sell.... Get in there DC.... what do u recken Ed's? {Ed001's Note - to be honest I haven't seen a lot of recent German football, last time I saw him he looked a good prospect though.}

13 Jul 2011 19:09:22
There's been a few 'comments' from Liverpool fans at arsenal recently...not sure why ?
I've always had time for Liverpool, a true great club- with great history and tradition, success build on tradition and being a well run club- not like the 'nouveau riche' al sheikh ci-ty £ and chelski $ - who are suddenly 'big' clubs- in the future someone looking at the premier league (or old div 1) would be like, 'wow they hadn't won the league for like 40-50 years'- what changed ? oh yeah this rich guy came a long...
Hope to see the pool do a double on man u this season.

Hi Eds /Reds

Can anyone explain why Arsene Wenger is causing such a fuss over Man Citys sponsorship deal? Is it just sour grapes, haven't heard any other football people whinge about it?

Thanks all

Rebel_Red {Ed001's Note - I am not sure what he was thinking, it does smack of jealousy just because Arsenal can't do that. Though he also does have a point that it is a little excessive and no one else would pay that kind of money for it.}

13 Jul 2011 19:01:07
Ed i saw that graeme bailey from sky sports said on twitter that villa's stance on downing is 20m or nothing. Well i would be suprised if we pay 20m considering we were relectant to pay 22m for suarez. If that is correct do you think we may walk away if villa don't lower the asking price? {Ed001's Note - I don't believe the price is the problem right now, it is their refusal to sanction a deal until they have a replacement.}

13 Jul 2011 18:53:56
Why are people so adamant on getting rid of mierieles?some people dont understand we are building a team that Will Always be full strengh not relaying on the likes of ngog, cole and poulsen.looks like drenthe is going to benfica and madrid are looking to offload 3 or 4 more players wouldnt mind going for albiol as he isnt in mourinhos plans so word has it

anyone who doesn't rate downing get on you tube and have a look at a video when he smashes 5 crosses one after the other into 5 wheelie bins one after the other, the guy has got pin point accuracy it is awesome. also aly sissokho that guy is fast, strong, great crosser and great defender we have got to get him an absolute bargain

13 Jul 2011 17:46:38
Come on fellow reds. No one should have disagreed with Red Indian over bomb blasts. f*** me the guy's in bits, footy and Liverpool might be his only joy in life, it might not but who knows.What i do know is that it sounds like something terrible has happened to him and his people and we all should support a fellow red when something as tragic as this happens.Re of him being a red, that dont really matter at times like this, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your people Red Indian as i'm sure most of the fans on here think the same. 13 Jul 2011 18:06:01
so glad to see all the positive posts about charlie adam after a solid debut, all the haters who were saying he wasnt good enough before he had even kicked a ball not saying much now. its early days an we were'nt exactly playing a good team but early signs look good, his first touch was a 45 yard pass straight onto carrolls left foot where he was unfairly given offside, hope to see lots more from him now

ed there alot of people here saying there seen cissoko at john lennon airport ed can u check their ip and see if the same person keeps posting it or not. {Ed009's Note - it has been posted by a few different people.}

13 Jul 2011 17:57:26
Eds do you know why Aurelio isn't on tour with the 1st team? {Ed009's Note - I presume he is injured, or being protected from injury in case of a sale. He certainly isn't at the Copa America.}

13 Jul 2011 17:56:29
So in your team you'd want aaron lennon, someone who cant cross.
You'd want either gerrard or suarez to be playing. not at the same time.
And finally, you'd want aquaman insted of spearing or shelvey, two players who actually want to be at liverpool

13 Jul 2011 17:41:54
ed i would much prefer adam johnson than downing
because
1 better cross
2 more skillful
3 younger
4 cheaper
5 better shot and finish

which player do u think will play for liverpool if downing doesnt sign???
also do u think we will sign a cb if yes who are the most likely????? {Ed009's Note - If Downing doesn't sign then I suppose we are back to Mata or perhaps Johnson. Dann is the most likely centre back.}

13 Jul 2011 17:32:19
Wud like to ask a question to the eds and fellow fans. If the owners just cancelled contracts of players such as degan, el zhar, poulson, ngog, brad jones, insua, jovanic, kyarikos amongst the rest of the dead wood reserves who are never going to make it at Liverpool, and ther all on wages between 20,000 and 50,000 a week thanks to rafa and purslow, would we accept the loss of 30 million in pay offs instead of a marquee signing, so we can be stable for January and next transfer window and buy better and great players
Pleas post on rumours would really like Yo hear opinions about it.

13 Jul 2011 17:24:30
I think doni and downing are formalities and desperately hope the sightings of aly cissokho are true as unbelievable they seem as in my opinion he is better and younger than Enrique he wud be great addition , especially for the rumoured 10 mil Lyon would settle for. Personally I don't think we need any more cm and my sources tell me that cb is an unimportant position to strengthen however if we complete deals soon then Scott Dann is possible but still unlikely

doni is not a bad keeper a couple of seasons ago he was on fire, so as a back up it's a good choice god forbid anything happens to pepe, and this cissocho chap i think he's class, but this is funny as, two yrs ago or last summer milan wouldn't sign him cos his teeth caused him back problems, he was all set to sign, it made me laugh at the time an seeing he's being linked to us i just thhought i'd mention it, by the way he's class with teeth as crooked as berlusconis bank accounts or not, lets get him.kyb

Ed we have 11 midfielders, who do you think will start out of if they all stay (not saying they will):
Gerrard
Meireles
Adam
Aquilani
Lucas
Shelvey
Spearing
Downing ( likely anyway)
Henderson
J.Cole
Maxi

Also who do you expect to leave {Ed009's Note - I think the three main central midfielders will be Gerrard, Adam and Lucas when all are fit. Others, such as Spearing will get lots of game time too though I am sure.}

Was just on the Villa page to see what Villa fans where saying about the downing move, They seem to have a completely different view of whats going on .. I saw things like "Downing to Liverpool with Joe Cole coming the other way plus 12 mil" and " Downing to Liverpool - 8 - 10 mil + Poulson, N'gog (If Bent hands in transfer request) and Cole .. So now im not sure weather we are going to be payin such bigs sums of money for Downing with the Villa fans quite possibly knowing more about their players than we do .. Hope their right

Hi ed. Who will b our nxt signing after downing. Any idea where touran is going {Ed009's Note - Probably Doni.}

13 Jul 2011 16:33:09
Aston Villa and Liverpool have agreed that the Downing done can be done once Villa find a replacement. Villa have time until our Asian tour ends, so hopefully, when our Asian tour ends Downing should be able to join us. DC and KK are in China, so have agreed to wait over Downing. He can't sign right now as he'll need to meet DC anyway for the contract negotiations and everything.

Patience, patience, and patience.

The Media have been linking us to players all across Europe since the end of the season, then if anyone linked in this way moves to somewhere other than Liverpool, they then report we have Missed Out .
If all these links had made it to Liverpool we would have a squad of 150 by.

Guys I did not watch the game. had a family emergency.Can some one tell me how youngsters like Pacheco, Coady, Nggog and other did?

Regards
Red Indian
PS: ED it will be helpful if you could chip in. Also how was Aqua man {Ed009's Note - Pacheco was decent, showed signs of his clear ability, but also his questionable temperament. N'Gog was awful, as per usual. Coady scored a great goal and showed why he'll be a future regular, but it was a quiet performance all round. Aquilani is a good player but I just don't think he fits Liverpool, which is a real shame. There was one slide tackle which he completely pulled out of.}

13 Jul 2011 15:48:21
Ed009, i agreed with everything you said mate, but Agger got skinned for the last goal, we cant blame everything on the Greek, although i'm not tryin to put words in your mouth, i know you never said Agger got skinned i'm just saying. The Greek is defo not upto scratch, but it didn't need this game to tell us all that. Only being a bit pedantic mate, getting restless till Downing sign's and get some real quality whipped in for the Monster Andy Carroll.Centre halves will be s**ttin them selves playing against him and Suarez.I think he should defo keep the beard, what do you think.Personally although Aqualani played well enough it really looked like he didn't want to be their at all, always frowning and talking to himself everytime the camera showed a close up shot. for leave a left back, if Robinson carrys on playing like that thats 10mil saved at least to put towards Mata or Adam Jonson , by the way Your a true gent Ed009. Jonson6 {Ed009's Note - to be honest my judgement was probably clouded by the fact Agger is up there with my favourite players. Aquilani is a good player but i just don't think he matches the club, which is a real shame. Robinson is a fantastic player. I still think we'll buy a left back, and with good reason, but Flano, Robbo and Kelly can all be regular starters for Liverpool in the future. Thanks for the kind words Jonson, its much appreciated.}

You need a left back at the Krap, I mean Kop? Celtic have got the best in the country, Emilio izzaguire but you mankies canny afford him. He's too good for you. C'mon the Hoops, C, mon the Red Devils {Ed009's Note - The best in the country? Not got too much competition in the SPL has he.}

Ed - just watched the first season game and was impressed with Cole, Flanagan, Robinson and Adam.
I thought they played like they wanted to wear the shirt. Robinson could start at Left back as he was that good. Both him and Flano tackled like the game meant something. Very disappointed with Aqualani and his body language looks like he wants to go.
Very rare we say this but Kuyt looked fatigued and gave away the ball a lot of times. Appreciate it is the first game and looking to get the fitness back but i think the competition for places will do the team no harm. Cheers P

Raul Meireles not involved in today's pre season game even though we fielded 2 different teams in each half. Wondering if that is to do with an imminent transfer of Meireles. {Ed009's Note - apparently he has a slight heel injury.}

13 Jul 2011 15:07:29
Jack Robinson seriously looks and plays older for a 17 year old.So much pace and coolness on the ball, timed every tackle to perfection. I suggest dat Kelly wid Flanaghan back up right back, Robinson with Aurilio back up and Glenn Johnson utility depending on formation, rb rwb, lb lwb, rm.lm. And thought Adam showed us a nice early glimpe of his creative ability and passing range and Carroll and was sharp looked as fit as i've seen him since he signed and one scary guy with that Beard.Wonder if it'll be on his face on Fifa 12 ha ha. 13 Jul 2011 15:00:50
Hey Ed, hows it going?

I was wondering if I could ask you how the youngsters played in the first half and how the other in the second.

I personally thought Adam had a good debut, Carroll played well as well. Aquilani was alright, but Gerrrard would play the position much better, Maxi was absoulutely terrible to be honest. I hope we get a new winger soon. Kuyt was a little bit rusty, but he wasn't getting many good passes. Agger and Kgriakos could've played better. Wisdom can get better and Robinson could probably be our new LB, he was amazing. {Ed009's Note - Neither of the wingers were brilliant. Robinson and Flano were brilliant, Kelly is a great player and Shelvey was promising, earning an assist.}

13 Jul 2011 14:59:36
ED,

I was following the thread, saw the Chinese team score two goals within 2mins.
How badly did we play?

Anfield Red {Ed009's Note - not that badly. In an attacking sense we were very good. Adam looked fantastic. It was just two defensive lapses. The Greek isn't good enough and Wisdom is a little naive and inexperienced.}

At work and can't watch the game. Know the score and seen a few posts on how some individuals are playing but can anyone tell me if we look to be playing to a certain formation / style different to last season? even tho the personnel may be different when the seaon starts.

Any of the youngsters playing well? I assume that lfc tv will show a repeat of the game later? Cheers {Ed009's Note - Jonjo played pretty well in the first half, got himself an assist. Coady has just scored a fine goal too. Flano best of the bunch though, showed real hunger and energy. We're playing pass and move football similar to what Kenny was instilling at the end of last season.}

Skrtel is the one I am unsure of, we haven't brought in any replacements yet, so I doubt he is going, but I have also not heard of any injury, it might be just a precaution though. Ed, I may be clutching at straws here but do you think that the recent growth of Meireles's hairstyle has anything to do with the fact that he is definetly leaving. It may sound bizarre but in a previous interview I read that he shaved his hair off when he joined Liverpool as he believedthe wet weather was not good for it. Do you think there's a link? {Ed009's Note - Carroll grew up in Newcastle and look at his hair... I don't think we should read too much into his hairstyle, personally.}

13 Jul 2011 14:03:21
ED please post and reply in rumours section. With the formation Kennys using in todays game, fair to suggest a 4-3-3 formation (or similar) will be the main choice for coming season? This would explain the high number of CM on our books right? (2 capable players in each position etc). This would mean Kuyt, Suarez, Carroll would mainly be in the attacking third. So if we DO get Downing, it would rule out a move for Mata? Also any need for a LB realistically? Johnson on the left, Kelly right, Flanno and Robinson as back up would do me nicely. Carra, Agger, Skrtel, Wilson and possibly Kyrgiakos for CB, unless we buy another CB to replace Agger/Skrtel. Leaving Stevie, Adam, Lucas, Raul/Aqua (I expect one to leave), Jay, Hendo and Jonjo to fight for the CM places. Based on this I wouldnt expect more than 2 more signings (Doni included). Any views??
INeverWalkAlone {Ed009's Note - I'm not sure that we will be playing 4-3-3 most of the time, I think it will change a fair amount. We are looking to sign a left back.}

I am watching game too. Joe cole looks a bit fitter and better than he has in a red shirt. I still feel he needs to shed a bit of weight. My biggest concern of the first half is dr evil he's given it away twice leading to chances and one leading to the goal he hasn't shown any willingness to win it back I know its only a friendly but I don't want him getting in to bad habits that could follow into the season looking forward to second half

13 Jul 2011 13:39:59

Hello ed, thanks for the reply. U were suggesting that skrtel could be sold and he was not still because we did not bought a replacement. i thought he would be staying whoever we bought and same applies to agger. he would be a very decent backup CB and he on the back of a personal good season. I thought he will def stay. Or could he be sold if a right offer comes and we bought a good CB. I think we should sell the greek. Or is it just my misunderstanding of ur statement. Thanks {Ed001's Note - he has not traveled due to injury, I would only expect Skittles to leave if we get a replacement, he is not just going.}

13 Jul 2011 13:55:35
Eds I posted a question on here a few weeks ago suggesting that Kelly will be used as a centre half this year.. I got slated for this, but today I have noticed he's starting at centre back for our first friendly does this now change anyone's way of thinking?

Somerset red {Ed009's Note - he is playing at right back? Wilson and Carra centre back and Flano at left back.}

13 Jul 2011 13:53:17
The Guangzhou goal is the exact reason we can't play wing backs, Kelly chases a crap pass from shelvey and we are beaten for pace no one back to cover and they score. I don't know how many times it happened last season but it happens too often for us. Play proper fullbacks and leave the wings to the midfielders. jmho.

13 Jul 2011 13:52:29
Ed is it me or is Joe cole looking like he, s lost alot ov weight since last season ( suarez's left ball ) {Ed009's Note - I've been impressed with the player so far today. A few good balls and one great turn. Important to remember we're not up against the best team though.}

hey eds,

watching Liverpool's friendly match, and have to say very impressed by Cole, he looks like the joe cole of old (whilst at chelsea). What is his situation atm ?

are we looking for any offer?, or will only sell for the right price? if so what is liverpool's valuation of him (seen reports between 2m and 12m ).

as always great site.

buster

P.S hope downing signs soon , his crossing will be a constant threat to the opposition :D {Ed009's Note - I'm not sure on the valuation of the player, perhaps 5 million. I'm not entirely sure we're desperate to get rid of the player though, and he has proved himself to an extent with a fine performance so far, albeit against a slightly weak team.}

What do most people think the formation will be today with the players we've put out? LFCTV showed it as a 4-2-3-1, but it could easily be a 4-3-3 (Cole, Pacheco and N'Gog upfront) or a 4-4-2 with Shelvey on the right.

RedSG {Ed009's Note - I immediately thought it was definitely a 4-3-3.}

{Ed009's Note - Chopper Read, I am afraid I am not going to post what you have written as it is simply too contentious. I am sure no harm was intended to your mother, and Ross' apology was, I believe, sincere. I am sorry if any offence was caused, and hope you can move on.}

Just seen the starting lineup for todays friendly and it full of guys on their way out. I think Kenny is giving a exibition to prospective buyers and displaying the players for them.
Shelvey, spearing, ngog, pachecho, poulsen and cole all starting. Aquilani on the bench.

Hey Ed

Line up for todays match: Gulacsi Keeper

Shelvey Poulsen Spearing Cole
Pacheco N'Gog

Substitutes: Agger Kuyt Aquilani Hansen Robinson Kyrgiakos Jones Wisdom Carroll Coady Adam

Any news on why Meireles and Maxi are not in the squad, ed? {Ed009's Note - Sky Sports says that Meireles has a "small injury" on his ankle, but I am not so sure, and Maxi isn't injured, which suggests something a little dubious about their absence.}

I know that liverpool really need a reliable left back who will be threatening ion attack mode.
But I don't understant why we are linked with Aly Cissokho from Lyon.
He made an awful season with a mistakes in almost every game.
It's true that Lyon really want to drop him and replace him with someone from the young team.
They still looking for Beno t Tr moulinas who is better then A.Cissokho
Ti n from PSG is good don't think he will change with the new investors (Qatar) coming in.
If we can : N n (PSG) et Ti n on the left will be very good

13 Jul 2011 12:18:17
Just been on the official liverpool website to look at the team playing today, and there is no sign of meireles in the squad. Does anyone know if he is injured? Aquilani makes the bench but not meireles, wondered whether this may have anything to do with an imminent departure if there is no injury?

Greggers {Ed009's Note - I am not aware of any injury and he certainly travelled with the squad initially. It is most curious.}

13 Jul 2011 12:17:31
The team is:

Although McLeish has come out and said he 'expects professionalism from Stewart Downing' regarding interest from Liverpool and that its similar to when he didn't sign for utd he also said "I don't doubt that Stewart has the character to be able to get through this IF he stays at the club"

The if kinda confirms it for me that he will be coming to us but only if Stewart forces the move a bit. Does anyone know if intends to hand in a transfer request ? I suppose if Villa are just awaiting a replacement to come in then he shouldn't have to.

Cheers,

ack at this time could be Cissokho There is definite interest there but in order to purchase the player - who s undeniably available - we will have to overcome, and likely outbid Roma.}
---------

Can't see us outbidding roma for two reasons, their owners are willing to invest heavily and 2 everytime we have bid against someone they have taken the player eg
marveaux
Wickham
Jones
young {Ed009's Note - Marveaux - we decided he wasn't worth the extra wages, a good thing to stand strong. Wickham - is the player worth 8, rising to 13 million? Jones and Young both had the undeniable allure of United, Champions and real players in the Champions League. Roma are in the same position as us. If we went for the player, I believe we could well get him.}

Eds can you shine any light on this, If we are interested in the likes of Dann and cissokho or whoever and these players are obviously available why do we wait to get into a bidding war? I understand Downing is our priority but these are other positions that we need so surely more than one transfer can be done at a time We haven't even bid on these other so called interests {Ed001's Note - what makes you think we are waiting to get involved in a bidding war? Who has told you that nonsense?}
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Even if Liverpool don't necessarily wait for transfer wars, that is what keeps on happening. for instance Clichy said he had offers from roma and Liverpool and said he wanted to stay in the premier league. also he said that City came at the last minute and he had a change of heart. The way our officials make deals is as if only the two clubs exist in this world. eventually we end up paying high amount for certain X player. whats the need for the hold up? I know we are pushing the Downing deal well, but we all know the problem we have for left back and we are definitely buying one whether we sell players or not. we should know who we prefer between Cissokho, Enrique, Baines, now bridge linked. we should know who we are after. we made a bid for Enrique before a month or more, and when is 2nd one coming. if we want cissokho, this is the right time to go for him, the player and Lyon using the media to make that happen, so if liverpool made a bid, we would know from their side. Angel and contrao another excellent two left backs gone. winger's like Payet sealed a move

miccmak {Ed009's Note - Perhaps the second bid for Enrique has not been forthcoming because we are no longer interested in a player whom the are demanding a ridiculous amount for. We could well see a move for Cissokho, but if we do it will be up against clubs such as Roma. It is a simple fact that if you strive for good players, other clubs will be doing the same.}

Well said RedSG. Dont think Carra's passing has been his strongest suit by any stretch but because of his the defensive ability, reading of the game and commitment to the cause he' a ledgened. I'm not saying Dawson is as good as Carra but he's Englands 3rd choice centre half that plays most of the recent games due to the ex captain from scum being so injury prone and is past it. He plays before, Jagielka, Cahill and the Flying Forehead from City. A lot more dominant in the air then any of the centre halves above puts his body on the line and as Ed001 said a Liverpool fan but doesn't rate him, i respectfully disagree with over his opinion which everyone is entitled to. He'd be bought to defend not for his passing ability. Suppose if we did bid for him peoples perceptions would change like with Downing who was mostly slated on this very site till it became apparent we we're gonna sign him and now it seems everyone wants him when that was clearly not the case when he was first linked. great site eds would just like to give my opinion on who i think will arrive thiss summer... im fully sure doiwning will arive and in my opinion its not a bad signing but its n a great sigining either for 18 million i think we could buy a better player maybe adam johsnon from city or a sneaky bid for walcott maybe... also doni looks nailed on and a left back oviously i have a feeling once them 3 are done liverpools spending will stop maybe our "marguee" signing will be downing or perhaps a top quality left back i dont think mata will join and definately not aguero and i know fans get excited but u have to be realistic aswel.. if u could give me any info on who is top of kennys list for left back would be much appreciated i know it was clichy but we obviously cant offer as much money as city... cheers ed, ps plz post in rumours easier to find

mornin eds i get the feelin were in for a busy end to the week, apart from doni n downin can you see anythin else happenin this week?? {Ed009's Note - I doubt there are any other deals in a position to be completed this week. The next position will be left back, and I would suggest that at this time Cissokho is the most likely, although we will have to overcome very real interest from Roma first.}

Ed, I just want to say that I hope we don't get a load of 'good riddance to rubbish' messages about Konchesky.

It's not his fault he didnt quite have the level of ability to compete in a side aiming for top 4 place and more. He was brought in by Roy based on a tiny budget, and as far as I could see he always tried to give his best.

I don't have any connection with him, but I do think its sad when a dedicated pro gets a nasty farewell when all he did was try his best to do the job he was hired for. Especially from LFC fans.

Like Roy, it didn't work out at LFC, but let's appreciate his efforts and wish him the best for the future, as LFC fans ought to do.

Good morning Eds. Thanks for the site

I'm 16 and I live in Switzerland, so my mates and I have been to see Lyon a couple of times. In my opinion Cissokho is their stand out player, and at £10m (as they are reporting on CaughtOffside) is simply the bargain of the summer. After speaking with a few Lyon fans they seem to love him as a player but do have some reservations concerning his character. I'm pretty sure Cissokho is not a 100% happy at Lyon, and I think we'll see this deal go through.

Thanks.

What do you make of the deal Eds? {Ed001's Note - he is an excellent player, probably the best currently available left back around. But I do have some misgivings about him personally, but he only has to cover a couple of years and then Robinson will be first choice anyway.}

Not really a rumour ed(s) but more of a strange thing to have noticed. Took my mate out for lunch at the Dorchester in London yesterday, and a very old style Rolls Royce (same type the queen uses) was being chauffer driven around Park Lane in Mayfair, with the Registration... KOP 1 ..... and accross the road, the official England football team coach. make of it what you like, but we got kinda excited going in for lunch....but didn't spot anyone.

Great site guy's love all the rumours....even the bad ones, keep up the hard work.

) Cole first out the door myself, he Cole first out the door myself, he has never been good enough and will never be fit enough to challenge for a start.} for a start
-------

Personally I would say that if he can slim down and improve his fitness then give him another season. His problems seem to have stemmed a few years ago when he was told to bulk up as he was too lightweight, since then he has been plagued with injuries.

Mr E {Ed001's Note - his problems stem from the fact that he has a knee problem which caused the injuries, nothing to do with him bulking up. He bulked up because he wasn't training while injured. He is one of those who needs to train to keep his weight down. He has no pace, no intelligence and is simply not good enough, shame because he does try extremely hard and is clearly desperate to make a success of his time at the club.}

Hi Eds,

Just a quick question re: N Zogbia and his wage demands.

How can he justify that amount as he must be only on 20k a week a Wigan(only I know) so this would quadruple at 80k?

Unless I am mistaken and he is on more than this at Wigan, but I doubt much more

John Wigan {Ed001's Note - he is on more at Wigan but not much more, and I have no idea how he is justifying such an obscene jump in wages. He thinks he is better than he actually is.}

There isn't going to be a marquee signing and it's certainly not going to be aguero We have to be realistic Maybe next year when we're back in the champions league. Downing and a left back and that'll be it. And to be honest we have to be more than happy with that

Jul 2011 00:35:40 It is clear, especially within the belief of Liverpool fans that a decent third striker is necessary for LFC to push for trophies this season. Honda could potentially fill this requirement. He has all the atributes to be a success, especially with the appeal he carries amongst Asian fans Hon
--------
any of you watched honda play? For both club and country he plays att mid, same role as gerrard, sometimes bit further forward as a trequartista but he's not a striker. Signing him as a third striker would be silly since he isn't one.

There's also strong rumours that he much prefers italy not england.

Mr E {Ed001's Note - he played as a loan striker for Japan in the 2010 World Cup and everyone has assumed that is his main role. He has also publicly stated that he wants to play in Italy or Spain as he feels that his game would be suited to those leagues.}

One minute you're all criticising comolli and fsg for their supposed interest in stats when looking at transfers the next you're all saying how downing is perfect because of his stats. Which is it?

I think the best way to appreciate a players merits and drawbacks is to watch them play at different levels over the space of a few months. Also take into account their statistics but as mark twain once said "there are lies, there are damned lies and then there are statistics" don't be fooled by stats, looking at darren bents goals scored and goals per game ratio you would think he is three times the player carroll and suarez are.

Scouting is not as easy as just read yhe stats and buy them. You sit in the stands making notes for the full 90mins, watching when they move, how they move, how fast they move, how long they move for, how long they are still for after moving, what space they move into, what space they choose not to move into. That's just movement. Believe me its a an ardous task which rarely results in an instant decision.

'we will sign an asian player' stuff has to stop, you dont just pick a demagraphic and sign a player from it. also just because carroll scored afew goals from barton crosses doesnt mean his the only player can put in a cross for him, not needed and far better opions out there.

Konchesky's gone to Leicester. Do you think we already have a new left back lined up that we know we can get eds? {Ed001's Note - Konchesky going is nothing to do with incomings, it was just getting him off the wage bill as he was nowhere near getting in the team.}

13 Jul 2011 08:07:38
First of all I have to tell u all this is not a rumour its just my opinion . I think liverpool should really have a look at Edinson Cavani he is quality , he is young and at the moment there is not much interest in him from other clubs . Also I heard that him and Suarez were born in the same city and they are big mates so you never know Suarez could convince him to come to us . Also I heard that napoli are interested in aquilani so we could use him as part of the deal as well . What do u think ed ? {Ed001's Note - not for me, he would cost a ridiculous amount of money for a player that is going to be on the bench.}

13 Jul 2011 07:56:47
Morning Eds.Just stuck tv on Sly Sports news, and its reporting Michael Dawson is unhappy with his desiresy pay rise he's been offered. Think how Spurs seem to be in bit of a flux at minute with Modric having his head turned by Chelsea and now this. Why not put a bid in for him.?Much better then Cahill and should cost around the same mark if not a little bit more. I'm not sure how long he's got left on his contract so that would have an effect on his price but but he'd be the best centre half we could hope to sign from the EPL were it looks certain thats where we'll end up buying one from. Jonson6 {Ed001's Note - personally I do not rate Dawson at all, he can't pass the ball 5 yards, but he is a Liverpool fan.}

Hi eds love the site and cant get enough right now. I know Cissokho has been getting a lot of attention here and rightly so as I think he can be a world class LB and just what we need, but what about his teeth? seems like an odd hold up for a deal but thats what stopped him from signing with milan in summer 09. should we be concerned? {Ed001's Note - that would depend on whether he had been the dentist inbetween then and had them fixed. They are very important, Smicer's injury problems were supposedly down to dental problems. That is why so many teams now do dental checks in a medical.}

13 Jul 2011 05:53:07
Hey ed, has merieles said that he is staying after all coz i believe that we could really benefit from another season with him in the team. He was superb at times last season and would hate to see him go. However, if he is asking for ludicrous wages then i can understand Dalglish letting him leave. Anyways, just curious as to whether or not you think he will stay or go.
Cheers,
KiwiRed. {Ed001's Note - he was asked if he was staying and gave a two word answer 'of course'. Though that became spun into him pledging his future to the club by SSN and the papers.}

Hi eds, I just would like to know your take on the Mereiles rumours.

Personally I simply cannot understand why we are looking to sell him, he was one of our best and most consistent performers last season and i can't see where these transfer rumours have come from, especially at a price of £12-13M which is barely a profit on what we paid for him.

Do you know why we are looking to sell him or why hes looking to move?
Cheers

Will {Ed001's Note - a number of reasons, he wants a big pay rise, he lacks physicality and he is not happy being played anywhere other than attacking central midfield.}

ed you get that he's a holding player right? he played there for porto and he plays there for portugal {Ed001's Note - do you get that a holding midfielder in England needs to be able to challenge for the ball? Rather than Raul who, for all his undoubted ability on the ball, pulls out of challenges.}

LFC have been linked with a move for highly rated Sierra Leonean duo Teteh Bangura and Mohamed Bangura.

The AIK pair have been getting rave reviews and have had a host of top European clubs monitor their progress closely.

The pair are not related but are both 21 year old and play as strikers with 25 goals between them this season.

LFC had the duo watched in AIK s 4-0 victory against Halmstad BK, a game in which Teteh Bangura scored all 4 goals and Mohamed Bangura claimed 2 assists.

Their agent, Patrick Mork said I expect that at least one of them will leave.

I don t know if that s just me being optimistic or realistic but all players want to move on, and it s my job to help term.

Liverpool FC are preparing to step up their interest in Werder Bremen centre-back Per Mertsacker after the Germany international revealed he would consider moving to the Premiership.

The 26 year old has been linked on numerous occasions with Liverpool s Premiership rivals Arsenal however as yet nothing looks to have been set up with Liverpool now ready to show their hand in the situation. A center-back is also on Dalglish s list as he looks to add more quality to his new look Anfield side, and although he may prefer British, Mertesacker s quality is something he would be very happy to add.

people moaning about downing, , , , on stats like goals, shots, assists, , , downing did better than giggs, valencia, modric, bale, lennon, wilshire, was equal with walcott was better slightly on goals and shots tho, , , downing may not be fancy with skills and not as pacy as lennon and walcott but he gets the job done more often than most wingers in the league, , , downing imo will be a good signing.

Liverpool hope to start clearing their deadwood this week with Paul Konchesky considering a move to Leicester City and Lille keen on signing Milan Jovanovic.

Konchesky followed Roy Hodgson to Anfield from Fulham for £4m last summer and, like his former manager, has endured a dreadful time on Merseyside. He spent the end of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, and Liverpool are prepared to accept £1.5m for the left-back, providing he agrees to join Sven-Goran Eriksson's team in the Championship. The 30-year-old has been granted permission to join Leicester at a pre-season training camp in Sweden where he will undergo a medical.

Jovanovic, who earned £120,000 a week during the first year of his contract with Liverpool, is also surplus to requirements and has attracted offers from Olympiakos, Anderlecht and Lille. The Serbia international said: "Lille, like Anderlecht, is a strong option. This is a good club, which plays at the top of French football, a high-level competition, and who will also play in the group stage of the Champions League. For me, that's interesting.

For some reason I think that Dirk Kuyt will have a massive season for LFC this year.

13 Jul 2011 00:35:40
It is clear, especially within the belief of Liverpool fans that a decent third striker is necessary for LFC to push for trophies this season.

Honda could potentially fill this requirement. He has all the atributes to be a success, especially with the appeal he carries amongst Asian fans.
Honda, Suarez, Kuyt and Carroll would give LFC real cutting edge in attack.
