Hey guys, first ever post but been a religious reader of the column for years now! Almost feels like I've known EMS, AG, Ken etc for ages, haha (Special shoutout to Reet, who is from my part of the world).

So diverging from transfer talk, kudos to you lot for filling Anfield even during the harder times, reds. Being a fan based nowhere near the city, really look forward to being in the Kop one day!

Also, great site Eds! Definitely the best place to try to make sense of silly season. Appreciate the hours y'all must put in!

Whilst awaiting Bail the other morning I notced that one of the people in the holding cell with me was none other than the great Ken Aguero himself (according to him he was being held over a misunderstanding concerning 3 litres of White Lightning and the injured Police horse was nothing to do with him). Anyway, he informed me that he was aware of the striker problem at the club and had scribbled some contact details for himself on the back of a fag packet and left them with security at Melwood. Could a return be on the cards?

Sounds like a sky sports ticker tape cert to me buddy. 😂

Hi eds just reporting that a deal for Mateo kovacic has been agreed in principal. Around 16 million is reported to be the fee, also hearing that Raheem sterling will definately go. I'm not concerned as I believe Jordan ibe can be a better player. He is also much more disciplined and manageable. Would be interested to hear the take from any of the eds on any of the above. Thanks Chris the red

{Ed001's Note - not sure what you are asking? Ed002 told everyone it was done over 36 hours ago now.}

I'm struggling to get excited about potential arrival of Kovacic, not because he isn't a quality player but it looks like that will spell the end of Lucas. I will be gutted if he leaves because he is a great professional and also a very good player. If Kovacic arrives then surely a midfielder will move on and the only person that could leave is Allen or Lucas. We all know how much BR loves "the welsh Xavi", Hendo is obviously staying as is Can and when you add milner to the mix I just don't think Lucas will be first choice in Rodgers eyes and understandably Lucas will want to go. Again i'm not slating Kovacic at all but I think we take it for granted how good we have it with Lucas. I can only name 2 DM's better than Lucas in the PL and that's Matic and Schneiderlin.

I could be wrong and maybe Lucas won't leave but Rodgers doesn't to realise his huge impact on our team and yet apparently Joe Allen is "outstanding". Whatever happens I am hugely grateful for the service Lucas has given us and I just hope it's for a little longer yet.

He's a better player of he's type than any of our midfield . Aggression with and without the ball . Has a pass and can run past players!! I find it hard to not be positive about him .

Agree11 Disagree1

13 Jun 2015 22:08:46
I think kovacic is a more forward player, so possibly not a direct replacement for lucas.
If anything,my guess is that milner or can might play the more defensive role next season.
I've always avoided personal attacks on br, if only because its a cheap tactic, and he is trying hard to do the right thing and get us winning.
But letting lucas go shows clearly what a damn fool the man is.
That blinkered refusal to see the value of a specialised dm- despite all the evidence- will be one of the keys to his downfall.

Agree9 Disagree0

13 Jun 2015 23:24:03
I fully agree with you. However I am excited about the arrival of kovacic, he is very highly rated and I've seen some inter games and recently Croatia games and he looks like a step up from what we have already. But I agree that I would be devastated to see Lucas go without a proper DM replacement, I would love for the transfer committee to make a call and move Allen on. If they have a say on who comes in they should have a say on who goes, and sorry but Allen has provided absolutely nothing but ball contention.

Having said that I think a midfield trio of Milner Henderson and kovacic could be a dominant force. Something we haven't seen since masch Gerrard and alonso.

Agree5 Disagree0

14 Jun 2015 02:21:09
Kman, the only way Allen will leave is if BR gets fired. He has bigger him up so much that he is almost obligated to play him even if it means he gets shot of Lucas who is not even close to being in his class. BR will continue to play him because in theory, if he's playing that much then he must be good enuff, right? As for Kovacic, he is not a DM and neither is Milner so playing them there will result in the same failures we have seen from BR for two seasons now. In the end, Kovacic is a player we don't need ATM and will not fill the main need we have at the top striker and DM positions.

Agree1 Disagree0

14 Jun 2015 07:16:54
I must have missed Allen being a regular starter for us the last 2 seasons.
Secondly, I don't think Kovacic or Milner will be assigned the DM role, isn't Can the replacement for Lucas?
Thirdly, I think we are trying to assemble a squad which doesn't rely on one default formation and is much more versatile in it's structure. Liverpool lost the league in 2014 because their setup was predictable and allowed Mourinho to select the perfect counter attack. The better teams will do that to you, the trick is to be unpredictable.

Agree2 Disagree4

14 Jun 2015 07:40:04
I sincerely hope we don't move lucas on, my wife will kill me for one and we'll need to change 2 of our children's names lol. Difficult to understand the thinking behind overloading a team with attacking middle and letting dm's go, especially considering how weak we seem to be defensively. Oh well another 50 goals conceded next season. Here's hoping ings and milner can score more goals than suarez and gerrard did

Has anyone actually confirmed that we are in talks with Falcoa and taking a pay cut?

Are we actually his preferred destination due to playing time? It all seems to fit for me, but it's annoying not knowing whether this is just paper tripe or real.

13 Jun 2015 21:23:49
I think it would be a massive gamble to be honest. Yes he could hit the groung running but going on last season I doubt it. don't get me wrong he was a deadly player before he got injured but I suspect he tried to hard to get back for the world cup in Brazil and has caused himself more problems, when he should have taken his time and come back properly. To be honest I don't see why Chelsea are in for him unless he is dropping his wage demands drastically also will he be happy on the bench there? I would doubt it

Clearly, some of us have not learnt from the Balo debacle I mean, gamble.

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Jun 2015 19:44:33
This is my opinion and you can slate me for this al you want. ed 001 i respect you as it is clear you have great football knowledge but to say we are strongest in midfield and we should not buy midfielder is not fine with me. maybe we have NUMBERS but quality of our midfielders is dreadful. they don't create or defend. seriously:joe allen, emre can(who is good player to have but he is not yet a midfielder, lucas(who is decent but injuries kept him away from fine form),henderson who is decent player but i have feeling that he is afraid to take responsibility and sometimes do the hard work(also he can't tackle to save his life although he runs and is everywhere). if you could just know how good kovacic already is you would be so happy and if you know how good he could became you would be jumping. he is the next croatian great midfielder(prosinecki, boban, modric then rakitic and then kovacic who is said to be the best of all of them by every coach in croatia). joe allen or kovacic? good midfielders make everyone good. just like stevie made everyone good. sorry for the long post but midfield wins you games-first rule here in croatia

cheers

Believable5 Unbelievable2

{Ed001's Note - I have already said I really like Kovacic, why are you having a go at me? My issue isn't with Kovacic, nor his ability, as I pointed out he is an improvement on what we have, it is that midfield is not the most pressing issue. We have a keeper barely good enough for the Championship and we signed another one to back him up who is nowhere near good enough. We need to fix the defence first and foremost, that should be the priority as that is what is costing us.}

13 Jun 2015 20:11:42
But ed1 don't you think the way to fix the defence would be to bring in a defensive coach. I know your opinion on skrtel isn't the best but I don't think he is as bad as everyone suggests he is although he is prone to error, he does better defending in the box than all our other centre backs. I think communication wise all of them are terrible not least skrtel. We have a decent back four on paper (better than utds that's for sure) we just need to translate that into reality and I think a new manager or defensive coach would do the trick. Instead of paying ridiculous amounts of cash again.

Agree0 Disagree2

{Ed001's Note - but we aren't doing that so why even bring it into the conversation? This is about what we are doing and why it is wrong.}

13 Jun 2015 20:24:16
ed sorry if you found me offensive i have all the best opinion on you. we should get rid of some midfielders that are not liverpool standard. i agree on mignolet not being good enough. some really good goalies are avaiable. our defence on paper looks really good. even our attack but look at our midfield. apart from coutinho and maybe henderson anyone is near standard of liverpool footbal club.
thank you for your answer ed and i agree with you brendan is not the man for us. i hope to be proven wrong

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I wasn't offended, just confused as I am not against the Kovacic signing per se, just think we have other issues that needed to be fixed first. I personally think Lucas is excellent and would like to see the likes of Teixeira, Rossiter and Branagan given a chance.}

13 Jun 2015 20:35:54
Mandzo I think your post is a typical negative way of thinking - let's think of a starting 4 across the middle - Coutinho is a class act, Henderson is a far more assured and confident player when Gerrard isn't playing, Lallana ( if he can stay fit ) another quality player, Lucas, gives away the odd silly free kick, but a very very good player, Emre Can , hasn't been given a chance in the position he was bought, but a young player with bags of skill, and even more potential, Milner ( not a fan really ) but you'll get a 100% effort, and probably at least 8 to 10 goals, and even more assists, to back that up, Markovic young international still to be given a proper run in the side, Ibe, been watching him for years in Academy, and I was surprised Sterling was given a chance before him, Joe Allen , I admit could do better, but maybe he, like the others were stifled when Gerrard was there, now we're talking of Kovacic, another very very good player, whether we need him is another matter. What the club really needs is continuity with some players, oh yes, and a new manager/head coach who knows where to play the talent we have. A 25 goal a season striker would be nice as well.

Agree3 Disagree0

13 Jun 2015 20:41:58
Ed1 why do u think the more reliable journalists, barret, Pearce, boscombe, and sly are saying there's no interest from Liverpool in kovacic?
Think this is the first time I've seen the eds say we've got a deal in place and not have it backed up by anybody.

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - it is because they are out of the loop, and it is not the first time.}

13 Jun 2015 20:51:30
You can't polish a turd, Kman. No defensive couch is going to improve Skrtel, God knows why we keep him, but then I could say that for the manager as well.

Agree7 Disagree2

13 Jun 2015 21:08:24
Skittles is awful. And have to agree ed001 is talking lots of sense here. Kovoacic isn't required but El Noseo wants to get rid of Lucas for some reason. I'm worried about Can too under the Nose, can't imagine he'll want to stick around for long being played at RB.

Agree2 Disagree0

13 Jun 2015 21:40:17
I would very much like to know how you get in the loop.
U don't have to post this on the site u can email me with pointers if u have time.

Agree0 Disagree2

{Ed001's Note - why on earth would I want to tell you how to get the information? That would negate the whole point in the sites if I just passed over the contact details of everyone we talk to.}

13 Jun 2015 23:00:37
I surprised no journos have picked this up in UK yet as information is pretty easy to come by in UK. If you check the posts from April 2014 you'll see I hinted at the kovacevic transfer more than a year ago.

The eds are right, ignore the journos they don't report the news, they try to create it.

Agree3 Disagree0

13 Jun 2015 23:30:19
I think I'm a bit confused, is defensive coach a completely separate job to, for example, assistant manager. Say we brought in a defensive minded assistant, would this not play the same role as a defensive coach. And if so, it is then a possibility because there are effectively two of those positions vacant. Unless ed1 you know that it's just not going to happen, then fair enough. I just thought it is an area that can be fixed if an assistant came in that was more focused for that area.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jun 2015 02:41:46
Mandzo, you are not asking the right questions. Why are we buying Kovacic, a mid for a position we are already very deep in while we have issues in the attack that has not been addressed as in a top striker who can bang in the twenty goals we need to be competitive? We have goalie issues and if Lucas leaves, we have no DM to replace him because neither Kovacic nor Milner can play there. This has nothing to do with the player or his quality but has to do with the strategy or vision behind wanting him here. BR likes to collect mids a lot which to me, proves he has no idea what he is doing because he is repeating the same mistakes like last season as in, wasting money on players we don't need.

Agree1 Disagree0

14 Jun 2015 05:15:30
Kman92, how can you suggest our defence is better than United's? i'm sure they conceded 11 goals less than we did. Which suggests to me they have the better defence.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jun 2015 10:45:51
I understand that the midfield isn't a priority but I think with kovacic it's a case of now being the only time to get him. If he develops into a world class player then he'd have his pick of top clubs to go to from inter. Obviously Liverpool have been aware of him for a while and know they need to get in there now before the opportunity passes them by.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - LOts of clubs were interested in him before he moved to IM. Now they are struggling to find someone else to bid.}

14 Jun 2015 13:32:27
red ohio i agree but this is a chance to get highly rated midfielder. and is large improvement. another coutinho and not that expansive. we will now clear some players and if we manage to find buyers for balo, lambo, and borini add a striker

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Jun 2015 18:51:57
Fencey, how can you even ask if Milner will start for us? Do You honestly think he'd come to us to sit on the bench when he could sit on the bench for city and double his money. He is going to be one of the first names on the team sheet and is a candidate for the captains armband. Just because he didn't cost 40 million people don't appreciate the signing, I think he will be a great signing and become one of our leaders. We will have great legs in mid now with him and hendo, people talk of him playing as a RWB. He will be through the middle all day long where he's most effective. It's nice to see a player move for footballing reasons not financial gains he could have stayed with citeh and played half the games and kept the bench warm but won the league nearly every year but he's swapped that to play every week (take note sterling) he has the honesty we need at times like this. YNWA

Believable9 Unbelievable2

13 Jun 2015 19:38:19
Just because he is on high wages shouldn't mean he automatically command a starting berth. Hopefully he is in the team because he deserves his place? Obviously he chose Liverpool because he thinks his chances are greater at playing for Liverpool than his other options but it should not be a given by any means.

Agree6 Disagree0

13 Jun 2015 20:33:32
His class warrants a start for us. He's better than what we already have except coutinho and I think if we can add kovacic too we will have a really good midfield. Maybe offload joe Allen who although shares my nationality, just isn't quite good enough. Great lad though

Agree4 Disagree2

14 Jun 2015 02:51:05
Welsh, what class? Is he better than Couts? Is he more skillful than Lallana? Is he a game changer? Is he world class like SG? If all these questions come with a big fat NO as an answer then you must have a diff idea of the word "class" which has no basis in reality

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jun 2015 05:20:53
Kovacic, when his signing is completed should be first the first one picked in our midfield, he is easily the best of all our CM's. For me, Milner and Henderson should be fighting for the one spot, they are much to similar in style. Assuming Lucas leaves, as he has offers on the table, I would like to see Can given the DM spot. In a midfield diamond, its Can, Kovacic, one of Milner or Henderson, and Coutinho at the tip for mine.

Hey Eds, respect to your awesome work.
May I ask, why is liverpool interested(as alleged by the papers) more in midfielders than in forwards who can cope with our pacy, attacking play?
Are these midfielders genuinely under interest from Liverpool or are they just paper bluffs?
Because I feel strikers are the immediate need.

Fingers crossed skrtel moves on this summer. i'd love us to go for howedes or bartra. The former is rumoured to be available for €12m and the latter has said his release clause is now €10m. Ed001, with all the changes that have taken place, particularly BR losing Marsh and Pascoe, is there any indication as to when replacement coaches will be appointed? Eds I know the owners have spent money already, but am I right in thinking we need to sell to accumulate funds (and reduce squad size of course )or is there a transfer budget already In place so basically do we need to sell sterling?we got Suarez to sign a new contract even though he knew he'd be leaving the season after, hope we can do that with sterling get him to stay one more season and cash in with him signing a new contract, or maybe I'm just hoping. Sorry about the long post.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it doesn't work like that. You don't receive funds the minute a player is sold anyway. There are payment terms which have to be worked out, usually the up front payment is much less than people realise. Just forget talking about finances it is far too complicated to get into. Even the best football finances blog, swissramble, is only a quick overview in reality as the subject is extremely complex and convoluted.}

I don't understand the people who are desperate for us to sell Sterling before City regret it. Him going is another huge indication for the demise of our club.

Beyond the very negative message this sends to the world that another great star of ours is desperate to leave, as I said several times we will miss him badly on the pitch. He may have still a lot to improve and is not consistent but he was one of our 2-3 best players in the last two seasons and contributed a lot in terms of goals and assists.

The suggestion that Ibe can replace him at this stage of his career is a joke. Neither will Kovachich.

I wouldn't mind him staying another season even if we get less cash later. Christiano Ronaldo also didn;t want to stay in United after coming back from the world Cup and this incident with Rooney - didn't stop him from being a formidable force next season.

The thing with cashing in is that as last summer showed we don't use the money wisely. Our problem is not that we don't have money to bring big names but that no one of the big names want to come to us.

Let's say we get 40 or even millions who can we bring then that we cannot bring now? Benteke maybe? Even he may prefer to stay in Villa until one of the bigger teams make him an offer next year.

If I am the owners and I feel I have to let him go, I first try to sell him to a non PL team (Rafa said he was interested) and then say he is going only if we get a player for him plus cash. Yaya Toure if it is City, Benzema if Real Madrid. If they don't want to come or the team don't want to release them I keep him for another season. Though to be honest if I had been the owners I would have sacked BR and bring Klopp and then Sterling would have stayed (so he said).

i think we should cash in as the ed has stated numerous times he is toxic and to cal him a great star is ludicrous i'm not saying he wouldn't become a great star but the lad lacks attitude and consistency, personally i think him and his agent have burned their bridges at anfield even if jurgen klopp did come in sterling has lost the fans admiration and playing with them getting on his case would be unbearable therefore for him its probably better to get out. imo.

13 Jun 2015 12:44:29
Sterling hasn´t played well for some time now. If a player doesn´t want to play for his club, then he should move on as it affects the other players. Question is, do we want to cash in now and get £30-40M or should we wait to january where he can buy himself free of his contract for approx. £8M?

Yes I would have wanted him to stay, because he has the potential to be even better, but I see no reason to keep a player who has no interest in playing for LFC and if he keeps on playing like he has the last part of the season, then I would suggest that Ibe, Markovic and Milner are better options than he is.

Agree12 Disagree1

13 Jun 2015 13:02:34
Sterlings star has rose as high as it's going to get, his attitude is wrong, he is easily led, he won't be starter for city. Too many off field distractions. Get rid I suggest

Agree4 Disagree0

13 Jun 2015 13:12:04
There are two different issues here. One is to say if he doesn't want us we don't him to stay. Fair enough - I don't think he is toxic and will have had any bad impact on the team if stayed but it is true that some of the fans can boo him etc although I am sure it will disapear after his first goal but never mind. But all that I can understand.

what I cannot understand is how once he decided to go so many people here suddenly started to say how poor a player he is. RedFuzz your suggestion that Ibe, Markovich and Milner are better than him, every person in the world who is not an LFC fan and know anything about football will find himself laughing on the floor by this suggestion.A bit like after Suarez left some people here tried to suggest he is not such a great talent or that we shouldn't miss him that badly (and no, of course I don't compare, Suarez is 100 times better player, but so is Sterling compared to Milner and Markovich). I am willing to bet that if Sterling is not injured he will have more assists in City (albeit partly thanks to Aguero) than all of the above three plus Kovachich for us combined. At least if we sell him, we should have got another decent player for him instead for burning the cash on second rate players as we always do.

Agree8 Disagree5

{Ed001's Note - actually you will find a large number of us thought Ibe was better all along. It is nothing to do with him going in some case, Ibe just is better.}

40 million for a slightly better than the average player, sounds good to me. When was the last time you remember sterling terrorising an opposition defence, smashing in 2/3 goals, creating chance after chance. That's right it doesn't happen.
I went to 30 plus matches last Season and in not one match did sterling set the world on fire, some good contributions up and down the pitch but there were a couple of abysmal performances from the boy who could be great but that will not be with us. Bolasie at Palace to me seems a bette Player, not that I'd want him mind

Sterlings first touch, decision making, and the ability to score sitters has been incredibly poor since the start of this year. Yes he is better than what we have seen for the last 6 months, but what does it matter if he can´t get back to his best (If he really doesn´t want to stay at LFC, then you can´t expect him apply himself a 100%)? At the moment Ibe is better than him, and I think he is on par with Markovic and Milner.

Even Andros Townsend looked better than Sterling the other day.

I'm one of those who- even in the season we came second- never rated sterling that highly.
For months I've watched most of his dribbles go nowhere, his endless pauses on the ball slow down an attack, and his weak shots get parried easily by a goalie.
He looks really great at times running down the wing or beating his man for pace, but he seldom delivers any end product.
Most fans think I'm nuts when i've said I think his lack of end product makes him a waste of a red shirt most of the time, but my prediction is that he will flatter to deceive but will eventually get found out at city, and be a bench player.
I've never rated him as anything other than average in the PL, if that.

Where is this negative image we are giving off to the rest of the world coming from?? The fact is that sterling will probably get sold for a fee which liverpool haven't payed for a player in history. does this also give off a negative image of the club? I don't think so. Following on from Ron's point which is a good one Paul pogba a example of a player who man u sold/got rid of that Alex ferguson to this day still says was the right decision. the exact same applies to suarez torres sterling and whoever will leave that doesn't want to be here in the future. If you can get big money for a player who has disrepected the club especially in sterling's case without ever actually deserving to have an ego like he does (bar maybe 6-7 games end of last season maybe) then it's the smart thing to do.

What image would we have if we turned down a huge offer this summer and sterling gets 2 goals and 3 assists next season??

fanobip i thin you miss the point that most here are trying to make, the kid is still learning his trade, he has the potential to be great for the club and have the admiration of all the liverpool fans but its not enough for him, his statements through his agent which he hasn't tried to say are wrong or misquotes are rubbish with the most stupidest one, imo being that the club s ambitions don't match his own, that's rubbish because every club has the ambition to be successful in all competitions. ambitions are dreams and when he asked the club(if he ever did) what re your future ambitions do you think they said oh mid table no trophies and group of unhappy fans, come on the kid wants out and is just peddling rubbish he thinks will make him look a good guy and its back fired on him. We use these rooms/forums for the eds whom i think we all assume have more contacts with the clubs than us we respect them and look for their opinion, so when one of them say the lad is toxic ill accept it we always heard how the kid had loads of off field distractions and baggage, so m8 you may want him to stay but he ain't all he thinks he is and he's far from a great player come back in 5 years see what's he's done or achieved or for that matter behaved.

I think ibe was meant to come in instead of sterling when Brendan first took ove as he was rated better but it was an injury or age thing if I remember.

I might of just made that all up but I am sure I heard something along them lines

Sterling is a good player but like all who went before him he is just over hyoed because he is British and under 21.

Walcott, oxlade, Barkley, Jeffers, wright-Phillips, a.johnson, downling. There good players but they get this big horrible reputation banged on them they there world class and I don't know wether that plays apart in there development or if they just wernt all that good in the first place.

In general ibe is a better player is all departments, sterling really is a player that if that pace goes hw goes. If ibe losng his pace yes he won't be as gold but he can still finish, better reading of the game, well balanced. Could play the ten role well!

lets talk at the end of the season and compare the statistics of both. I will be very happy to proved wrong. I try not only regarding Sterling but also Suarez and LFC more generally to judge objectively contribution on the pitch regardless of my feelings about what the player said, his agent or my hopes as a fan. I said and argued with few here last summer that suarez is irreplaceble and that Sanchez choosing Arsenal will put them in top 4 and us out of it. I don't compare sterling to them. There are players like Tevez or others that can replace him. Milner, Ibe and Markovich are not the answer IMO. Hope I am wrong.

Coutinho, Milner and Henderson, probably in that order. Hopefully Coutinho has that in his mind this summer, even though it's unlikely he'll get that opportunity for Brazil.

As for Milner's role in the team, I would play a diamond with him on the right side to help cover our RB (preferably Montoya or Clyne). Henderson on the left, Coutinho at the top, Lucas/Can at defensive mid (or Kovacic).

Quietly optimistic about our chances if Ings and Milner can acclimate quickly, Sterling goes and the money is spent on Kovacic and a right back. Things can change very swiftly, and I think this summer has a lot of surprises left (good ones, hopefully!).

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Jun 2015 11:10:25
Good morning,

Was thinking about our potential back 4 for next season. I have seen links with Clyne, Trippier & Montoya so that indicates we are in the market for a RB, which I am happy about so long as Manquillo is sent back to Atleti.

I would then like to see Wisdom given a chance as a CB, I believe that is his natural position, but will stand corrected if wrong. His athleticism and build, as well as being decent with the ball could see him and Sakho form quite a partnership given the chance. I would rather him play there than Skrtel or Lovren at present!! With Moreno and a new RB as full backs.

The right back I would like us to get would be Montoya. He has looked very good when I've seen him play, defensively and going forward with the ball. Being kept of out a side by Dani Alves doesn't make you a bad player by any means. Training with/up against the likes of Messi, Suarez, Neymar, Sanchez, Pedro etc. in recent years will have sharpened his thoughts and awareness defensively, you would think. As well as being around a squad of winners which will only be beneficial to him. He is at an age where he needs to be playing week in week out, if we give him that platform he could flourish and prove to be a shrewd signing. We could probably get him in and Manquillo out for the cost of Clyne's transfer fee, too.

What do you guys think?

Believable1 Unbelievable1

13 Jun 2015 11:28:20
Completely agree with everything mate.

Montoya is far superior to Clyne defensively and Wisdom deserves his shot in his proper position. Even if he doesn't cut it, we can just play Toure or Lovren.

Excellent post.

Agree3 Disagree3

13 Jun 2015 11:34:10
Montoya for me and can play both RB and LB when needed.

Agree1 Disagree1

13 Jun 2015 11:44:06
I agree that a right back would be coming in based on interest in Clyne, Trippier, Byram and possibly even Montoya. Markovic, Ibe, Henderson, Johnson, Sterling, Emre Can are all players who were used ahead of Manquilio in a position which more suits him which suggests that Manqulio is not needed and will be send back. I also don't think Wisdom wouldn't have got a new contract if Flanagan was fit.

Whenever I have seen Montoya play, he looked average. IMO, there is no chance of Wisdom being played at CB; Lovren, Sakho, Toure and Skrtel all have seniority and LFC spend big on Sakho and Lovren; they will probably be the ones starting, and definitely, Lovren needs to step up in a big way. He has had the worst season I can remember of a LFC CB in recent times, even Kyrgiakos and Coates had half decent games when they played.

Agree2 Disagree1

13 Jun 2015 11:57:10
For me clyne and montoya are both on a similar level. Neither is world class but both The potential. But I'd prefer Montoya as he would be a cheaper option as compared to clyne as him being English and all. But i think we may be signing Clyne.

Rather we just give Wisdom the chance to nail the RB spot down. Good defensively and good with the ball at his feet. But i'm sure we will make another signing we don't really need to.

Agree2 Disagree1

13 Jun 2015 13:42:10
I don't think Wisdom is the answer at right back and i definately don't think Moreno is the answer at left back. I understand that in the modern game that the full backs are required to get forward and help the attack but i want my defenders to defend first and foremost. Especially with our defensive woes.

Agree2 Disagree2

13 Jun 2015 14:28:28
Irish, which kind of makes Wisdom a good choice as a RB. He is good defensively. More so than Moreno IMO. I would much rather have left and right backs who are more defensive than attacking, sure push forward and help out with our attacks, but first and foremost being good defensively is more important.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Jun 2015 15:46:45
One thing though brisbane is that full backs end up with a lot of space usually when they do push up and it is sooo frustrating to see a ball crossed straight out of play which wisdom did do often at right back but he could have of course improved. but overall I think I would like to see him given the chance at cb ! Gets up very well for someone who I thought was much taller!

To anyone that would know what has happened to mcclaughlin ? I kept hearing rave reviews (admittedly had only see him play a handful of times without standing out for anything really) but I kep high hopes based on what others said then I think I read the other day that he had sealed his fate or somethinglike this so what happened? Is he still an option

Agree1 Disagree0

13 Jun 2015 16:51:25
Montoya? Seriously? because he comes from Barca doesn't mean he can play and in fact, he's no upgrade on Wisdom or Flanno because they have played consistently for the past two years especially Flanno who has proved himself and he hasn't. Montoya spent most of last season in street clothes than on the pitch so how is he suddenly better than Wisdom who played consistently before the clueless Pulis took over at WB? He and Clyne aren't good enuff for diff reasons so IMO, give Wisdom his shot and see what he can do instead of wasting funds on a poor defender and another who is a good attacker and not a good one one one defender in Clyne.

I hope Wisdom is given a chance as I think he could be a beast of a central defender!!

If we were to sign Montoya, Kovacic(pretty much done) and Higuain/Aubameyang I will be a lot happier than I was a few weeks ago! I hope we spend all the money from any deal for sterling on a top drawer striker, just not Benteke!!! Signing a direct replacement for RS seems a bit of a waste to me. I would give Ibe/Markovic/Origi/Ojo game time in the wide areas, all of whom could do better than Sterling did in the last few months of the season just gone.

FSG are paying just as much on transfer fees as the Manchester clubs and Chelsea. It is not their fault that on the field, we are not doing well enough to keep a hold of our 'star' players such as Suarez, Sterling etc. These players are then sold and we have money to spend every summer, made available by the owners. However, their organisation of the club is a bit more questionable at the moment.

Agree1 Disagree3

13 Jun 2015 14:35:19

In fact, we have spent almost 400m on players since the owners took over and have nothing to show for it. That is way more than Chelsea and the rest of the top teams have spent in that span so don't blame the others for us being poor at what they have been doing.

Hey ed01, another question for you - do you know which other clubs had interest in Millner and Ings this summer, and were there any offers on the table for them? I get it that a lot of people are critical towards the lever there two players represent, but I actually could see both of them establishing their credential in the first team, on a rotational basis in the very least. It would mean a lot if they have chosen us over other teams courting them.
ANd Milner's deal - is it too disastrous in terms of wages, Joe Cole style? I think what is important with Milner is whether he came here for the money, or to truly seek to prove himself.
I am not asking for exact ammounts, only if you consider his wages too high a figure, and how it compares to the salary offered by Manchester City?
Joe Cole and Milan Jovanovic will always be remembered as huge disappointments that put a great doubt on the merits of signing players on a free, but I have a feeling that both Milner and Ings have the necessary desire to succeed here.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - Milner had mild interest from Arsenal and Spurs, his wages ruled out much more interest. Ings had Spurs, Real Sociedad, Stoke, Palace, Newcastle and Sunderland all interested. Milner is being paid a lot more than Cole was. It really depends on how he performs for us as to whether he is overpaid or not. Ings could have earnt more elsewhere, as his deal with us was agreed in January, when he wasn't a free signing, before Burnley pulled the plug on the deal.}

If the rumours of City now willing to offer £40M are correct then it is definitely time to take the money and run. With this money and the sale of other players we will hopefully bring in a decent striker and RB. Also if Lucas does go which i hope is wrong then a DM or use Can and Rossiter to cover that position. Even with the amount of player's possibly leaving the club we still have quantity and i just hope they see this and add quality, this also gives our younger prospects the chance they deserve. I'm still finding the coaching staff being axed and no word in regards to supporting Rodgers or giving him the boot a bit odd as surely if he was staying the owners would have publicly given him their backing and given reassurances regarding the new coaching set up. I suppose time will tell.

Marx, the decision only shows they don't trust him and never have especially with money hence, the TC. You only seem interested in him being retained instead of looking at the parameters behind that decision. They keep him but axe his assistants, the TC is a failure yet they keep it in place and are now bringing in new assistants that he will be forced to work with prolly against his will. If you think isolating him is a good idea then you need to wake up. They had a chance to clear the decks and go again but they did not and are now making the same mistakes as last season and buying players in areas we don't need like Milner and Kovacic. As for Sterling, a 40m pound offer is a good offer provided we spend it on a DM and a top striker. Without those and spending it on collect mids like a diva collects shoes, then it will be a waste, just like the Suarez money was wasted

Agree0 Disagree1

13 Jun 2015 09:43:24
Hey ed01, I have a lengthly question for you, if you have the time. With quite a lot of transfers conforiemd already, could you share if you know what the club's opinion and plans are for the following players:
- Emre Can
- Lazar Markovic
- Alberto Moreno
- Joe Allen
- Rossiter
- Ibe
- Origi
- Sinclair
- Wisdom

WIth the exception of Joe Allen, I like the potential of all those players, and would like to see them developed and claiming a role in the side - but with so many players coming in will this happen?
Kovacic should be commanding a place in the side, Milner due to his experience will probably push Emre and Lazar down the pecking order, Ings to me seems better developed than Origi - does the club have a plan how to develop all these players?
If you do not have any inside information - your personal opinion and analysis will also be greatly appreciated!
PS Another question - Adam Lallana. I think this will be either an immense season for him, where he establishes his credentials, or a fade-away season, where either injuries or lack of class turn him into a bit-part player for us (not a flop, he has class - but for the fee paid he should be one of the leaders of the side.). What is your prediction of Lallana's season, where do you expect to see him play, and what is his best position in your opinion? (of course, BR clearly sees him as a left back, but that's another topic alltogether).

Believable3 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - Can: staying.
Markovic: unsettled might well leave.
Moreno: staying.
Allen: staying right now.
Rossiter: will be assessed when fully fit.
Ibe: staying.
Origi: staying right now.
Sinclair: assessed in preseason but likely to go out on loan.
Wisdom: staying right now.
The plan could change, though I do not expect Can, Moreno nor Ibe to go anywhere. Markovic is struggling to fit in and the club will speak with him more over the next few weeks to make a final decision. Allen, Origi and Wisdom it would depend on what happens, there is a chance Allen will get sold if interest is there, but so far there has been none and he is not pushing to go nor being pushed out. It is just that we would not dismiss offers out of hand, if there were to be any. Origi will get preseason and then a decision will be made as to whether he is ready or needs another loan. Wisdom is going to be given a chance to prove he is ready.}

13 Jun 2015 10:46:59
Once again this proves that the transfer commitee/Rodgers is out of their depth. Spending £20M on Markovic and then a year later, they are willing to let him go. I wouldn´t be surprised if Origi is loaned out, and will share the same faith as Aspas and Alberto.

I´m baffled that they can´t see that they are about to make the same mistakes as they have made the previous years.

Ed001, do you know if Rodgers has the full support of FSG? Heard that Marsh and Pascoe was sacked without Brendan knew it, but the signings seems like Rodgers choices.

Thanks in advance

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Markovic is unsettled and considering his future, the club would prefer to keep him, but you can't hold him hostage. If Rodgers had full support his coaching staff would still be in place.}

13 Jun 2015 11:00:30
Great reply. Does anyone else think Markovic should be given a full run out as Sterlings replacement? I'd like Ibe and Markovic to wing either side of a striker. Lallana and Coutinho rotating (as neither last full 90 minutes or two great games in a row) as the free role behind.
Bit or rotation and alternate formations would cover injury, suspension.

That's unfortunate about Markovic, would that be down to Liverpool handling their new players poorly in terms of settling?

Haven't posted in a while. thanks Eds, for putting up with the lot of us!

in all this discussion on the players we're bringing in (good enough, not good enough, waste of money etc.), I'm actually more concerned by the number of new players. We've already brought in 3, with a 4th imminent and possibly another 2, maybe 3, on the way? Some of last year's additions haven't fully bedded in yet (Lazar, Dejan as a start). And then we are going to be missing the constant starters (Sturridge, Sterling, Gerrard). How on earth are we going to get into any kind of rhythm in any reasonable timeframe??

Does anyone else share my concern?

Believable4 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - I know that always worries me, there should be no need to make this many changes every season. Understandable in the first window or two, maybe even a third, but this is what the 7th? Surely by now we should have a settled side and only need to replace a couple of players.}

13 Jun 2015 11:02:26
In all honesty Ed if you look at the squad seven windows back (summer 2013 if I'm right).

The squad had

J. Cole.
J. Carragher.
S. Gerrard.
G. Johnson.
B. Jones.
L Suarez.
J. Reina.
D. Agger.

To name a few all have needed replacing or upgrading with time. The team was t that great when he took over. Adam, Carroll, Downing all spring to mind ( am I right in thinking we still had Poulsen and Konchesky on the books too?

We've lost over the course of this period our two stalwarts in Carragher and Gerarrd, and then generally upgraded on what we had. Admittedly players such as Allen and Borini haven't been upgrades.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - you have named 13 players there, in 7 windows. So that is 2 a window. Why have we bought so many in the last two summers?}

13 Jun 2015 11:18:45
Agree with Ed. feels like it's another clean slate, start again due to Gerrard and Sterling going. We never prepared properly for the loss of Suarez, if we had then possibly the unforeseen loss of Sturridge wouldn't Impact so much. But that's the all eggs in one basket management.

All we can hope for is firstly, last summers ins will have settled and this summers are already quite prepared and adapted to LFC. Both are possible, maybe less so with Rodgers?

Bogdan is a no.2, it's a big step up to LFC but not going into 1st team action (bar injury) should give him time. He is an international no.1 so not like he doesn't know pressure.

Milner is seasoned and well aware of LFC and the expectation.

Ings is young, but hopefully confident after a great first top flight season.

Origi is unknown to comment, but he has played in world cups and done well. No reason to totally flop. Unknown though.

I think the main factor this season, which may help us is that although we are a huge name in football, we are no longer a huge force or expected to challenge. Most fans will be intune with this imo. Also the players. This may then give all the players both new and last seasons a break from pressure.
Don't get me wrong our team will expect and want to do well, I just think there is a good group there, maybe new recruits are the right ones this time and without last seasons pressure of bettering 2nd, we could be the ones who surprise for a change. Players like Ings, Origi are not coming to a mega club expected to win the league. They're now coming to a well known club, with a good set of quality international who, without that expectancy could be challengers. There isn't this massive step up.

Agree0 Disagree1

13 Jun 2015 11:48:54
A number of factors may have came into play finances, availability. The season before last we definitely had one of the smaller squads. I do feel we needed quite a few to cope with four tournaments as the youngsters weren't getting a look in.

I do think in terms of quality we are going right direction. But the number of changes this late on will mean a lack of cohesion again early on in the campaign. Hopefully last years signings will be able to take the mantle in the early stages, with the help of a Ojo maybe breaking through.

13 Jun 2015 17:15:05
That is why the academy players matter because that way, you don't have to spend money for no reason in the TW. That is why we have too many players in the squad with no idea how and where to play them hence, BR has no idea who his best eleven is even after, three years in charge. Having a DOF in place would have solved some of this but the owners choked on that. Now, we are back in transition again for another three years. Shambles!!

Hi Eds

First time poster here. I love this site you do an exellent job here. Do u think we have an opportunity to get a player in return for sterling. I personally would love to see fernandinho included as part of any deal to give us a box to box defender. I went to the Wales game last night and Roma Naigollan(pardon the spelling) ran their midfield could he be an option. I know we are overrun by mids but if we sell allen and lucas we will need another cm/dm. Looking forward to hearing your views!!

Believable1 Unbelievable2

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool have agreed the move for one midfield player this summer and are close to agreeing another. They have no interest in Fernandinho and Nainggolan, who the club also have no interest in, has his future already resolved.}

13 Jun 2015 08:58:52
U want Fernandinho who is 30 and will want big wages right after we have signed 2 mids in Kovacic and Milner? Asking for Fernandinho as art of the Sterling deal would take LFC's transfer dealings to a whole new level of stupidity. The club should take the money from City and make a proper offer for Aubameyang who would fit into the team seamlessly. I do not want to see the club waste another mammoth proceeds from a player sale on average or unnecessary signings. Sterling out, new top striker in.

It has been an interesting few days, and nothing but moaning on this site surprise surprise. Have a little patience ladies and gents, the transfer window hasn't even started yet. Bogdan is a very good signing, mignolet had a decent season last year and probably saved us countless points, we were never going to spend 10 mil on a keepeer to challenge mignolet. Milner gives you one thing we majorly lack, a bit of heart and is extremely versatile - can be nothing but a good signing and would love to see him take the captaincy. Danny Ings, no brainer isn't it- young, pacey English striker who is very decent.
Kovacic coming in is a massive plus, have u watched this guy play- also have any of you actually thought that we may even sell some players this summer?
I could go on forever about who I would like to sign, however unfortunately I don't make them decisions. The club will sign those who they see as suitable and may surprise us.
I will agree with the majority in saying I'm horrified that Rodgers is staying, However extremely pleased the backroom staff is under reconstruction- here's hoping for 4/5 very good coaches who get utilised and have a voice

Welsh, the assistants were never the prob because they, contrary to what everybody else wants to willfully ignore, are the sacrificial lambs who were made to pay for other people's failures. Ever cared to ask why they are getting the blame for our failures because if that is the case, shouldn't all the credit for our progress last season go to them as well if we follow that logic? And if that is the case, what is BR's actual job, then? Or is he a manager in name only? Pertinent questions, my friend.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Jun 2015 08:27:28
I think there's an outside chance we actually may get the 50 million the club is demanding.

If so it's great business by the club and gives us a substantial amount. In addition to Sterling I'd say all of Enrique, Coates, Skrtle, Alberto, Lucas, Allen, Aspas, Borini, Lambert and Balotelli will also be sold.

We have already signed Bogdan, Milner, Ings and now Kovacic so I'd say we only needed a striker, right back and wide/attacking player and would be enough.

Hello Ladies, Gentlemen and Ed's. Long time reader first time poster. For many years I have been reading with great interest. I could go into so many topics within these pages but will refrain from doing so as I will post more later. First of all expect to be treated how you treat others, my Mother and Father taught me that from an early age and yes I know frustration and the love for LFC makes it hard. And yes that includes the Ed's although there are some very idiotic questions and reply's. So I will start off by putting this out there. Brenda inherited a Swans side that retained possession that scored very few goals due to the fact they were packed of midfielders and infact the striker was a converted midfielder. (Ring any bells?) Certainly no surprise to me since Brenda is a fan of the Spanish national team that sets up that way also. Did anyone really expect anything different from an inexperienced manager that hadn't proved himself and can't attract top players. Top managers attract top players.

Believable4 Unbelievable1

13 Jun 2015 17:27:10
The funny thing is that BR keeps rambling about the Barca possession philosophy which have no basis in reality. Barca keep possession yes but they do it in a way to control the tempo of the game and as a means to an end which is to win. They score goals for fun and they have done so for years with forwards like Romario, Stoichkov, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho even way before the Messi, Eto, Suarez, and Neymar era. the Spanish team only plays without a striker because they don't really have one and there are goals all over their midfield, unlike Swansea and LFC. BR's idea of possession has no relation to that of Barca or La Roja and mashing it over and over again doesn't make it so.

How many of you have actually seen Kovacic play? He is truly an unbelievable talent, and if he does come to Liverpool we will be very lucky. Yes, we need a top striker. but getting in Kovacic would be amazing. Mark my words.

Believable9 Unbelievable4

13 Jun 2015 06:36:37
Exactly. I was just looking over at a few inter forums and most people on there were devastated that kovacic may leave. And in a poll on how important was he majority gave him an 8-Top player and one of the best in the league. If we can get in a defensive midfielder to teach him some defensive aspects of the game then therw i say it he may come close to alonso.
And all of them unanimously agreed that he was their best player.

P.s Going over to that inter site where people have to rely on the papers just made me realize how valuable info eds give us. Thanks guys

While its another signing we didn't really need to make considering we have other areas that need fixing, i'm not disappointed that he seems to be on the way. If he does come in, for me he is an improvement over all our other CM's. Easily first choice CM for mine.

He scored 5 goals and gave two assists last year in 35 league games. Dephay, the midfielder United signed scored 22 and I don't know how many more assists. Even Sterling who leaves us and played most season as a striker had 7 assists - more than 3 times more.

Oh for gods sake i don't want anymore 'young talents'.

We need either, proven, established quality, shrewd signings or just give the academy kids the chance instead, not blowing 20 million on more youngsters from other clubs again.

It appears that nothing has changed and its the same old same old lfc business, signing players for the sake of it who will end up being sold in a years time before another mass spending spree and another year of 'transition', because spending money is always the answer.

Kovacic may be good but do we really need him? It seems worrying that the fans, and even the people employed by the club, still buy players like kids in a sweet shop, without looking at the bigger picture.

Agree1 Disagree0

14 Jun 2015 21:47:48
Spot on, Wooley! Only LFC would spend 20m on a raw talent like Marko while already having an
Ibe, Ojo or Texeira in its academy raring to go. The so called review did nothing but confirm to us the depth of incompetence and ineptitude that continues to dog this club because we continue to make the same mistake every year and yet we are surprised at how much we underachieve every season.

If the club get £40m then once Ward/Sterling have theirs (no written request) and QPR get theirs you are looking at half or £25m probably. Also Sterling was/is on £35k pw isn't he? You are then talking about a player we'd have to pay around triple that.

Just saying don't expect £40m to be £40m to spend.

If true Utd got Firmino for £18m and decent wage, that's the kind of deal we need to get. Lacazette for £40m and £150k pw or whatever is dreamland.

Nonsense! BR has not met a microphone he didn't like. Last offseason, he was running his mouth with every opportunity he had and even during the pressers during the season, he talks a whole lot of rubbish. The fact that he has been quiet simply means he has been told to go on holiday and shut his gob while the club does its business. We have signed two players yet BR hasn't said a word about either player in the media and how world class they are. If you think he is being quiet of his own volition then, you are fooling yourself because no one believes you, Red. If the review did anything, it stopped this failure from embarrassing the club in the media because God knows many of us can no longer deal with the motor in his mouth.
