Not really big news but big news for me!

After years of knowing a young girl (as friends), she's from Portugal with strong Brazilian links! I mentioned I'd love to go to Brazil '14, so she said her dad has to be there as he is a football agent. I asked how come, she said 'oh he played for some Brazilian club, maybe Santos, Flamengo etc.) Those are major clubs, girl! what the hell! Then she casually added 'he also played for Brazil! At this I jump a mile and asked his name which turns out to be Jorge Baidek, who actually played for Brazil, once! But still, he was good enough to play for Brazil! Anyway, she's promised that if I get myself to Brazil she will put us up (my son and me!) and her dad might even be able to get us tickets to some matches. and get us backstage in some stadiums! What!
I know it's not Liverpool related but if I'm there I'll take photos of hopefully Phillipe and Lucas and share it with my fellow reds. let's hope this happens!

Clint Dempsey on loan in January?

Thoughts?

You obviously haven't got any!
DM2013

Agree0 Disagree0

I have thoughts on this but they are probably too harsh to print

Agree0 Disagree0

Competition for Joe Allen's place on the bench?

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think he is the type of player we need at the moment.

Agree0 Disagree0

Don't get me wrong if we can bring in a top attacking midfielder that would be the preference. However, if we don't manage to bring in our desired targets in January then Dempsey would be a decent attacking option on loan.

Red Rum {Ed002's Note - There is zero chance of Dempsey happening - move on.}

Gerrard is getting on now (33 and counting). He has been fantastic for the club, the best player I have seen grace Anfield's hallowed turf, but my question is who should replace him. He isn't getting younger and such an important, central figure at the heart of the club will inevitably leave a big void once he hangs his boots up. Should we look for replacements now or wait a season or two more? More importantly, and I am really hearing peoples opinions on, is who do you think we should buy (or is there anyone from the U18's or reserves?) to replace him?

No disrespect to Gerrard here, he is phenomenal, I just worry about the day he is no longer playing for us!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We should bring in Cabaye. Not as a direct replacement, but as someone who can cope in the more physical games where Gerrard seems to struggle.

He has similar attributes to Gerrard as he is a set piece specialist, he has excellent vision and pass execution. He also has a goals in him.

I don't think Gerrard is ready to be replaced just yet, but if I had to choose a young player to come in as his long term "replacement" it would be Aaron Ramsey. Which will never happen.

Red Rum

Agree0 Disagree0

There will never be another Gerrard. What we could do to replace him eventually, is to bring in modern day midfielders, who are comfortable on the ball and are good in a team with passing and keeping possession a priority.

Tonny Vilhena, Max Meyer or a more experienced player like Miralem Pjanic or Ivan Rakitic. We could also change the shape of our midfield into a diamond, which would make use of all the skills of our current crop of players.

Rossiter from the under 21's looks good only 16 and doesn't look out of place. Bosses the midfield.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think we need to directly replace him with a like for like, as somone pointed out, but with a young confortable ball playing midfielder. Suso will be in the team very soon but we can also look at other midfield options. I would love Cabaye but he is still injury prone. I still have hope that allen and henderson can press on and form a good partnership there.
I haven't watched enough of the academy this season but that boy Chirivella (spelling) looks a great talent.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree we can just change our shape
have lucas and henderson hold, with countinho in front, then have a front 3. I am hoping luis alberto comes good and can play along the front three with suarez and sturridge

Spoke to Joe Allen in St David's Hotel in Cardiff Bay earlier. What a really polite down to earth bloke. Hope he rediscover's his best form soon.

Good to hear. I think he will get chances now as the games come thick and fast.

No connected but I see that Steve Clarke is asking the F.A. to review penalty decisions. He should have of this after the first match last season when his side were awarded TWO against Liverpool and a player was red-carded. Once again a case of a blinkered manager!
Dutchmal

Agree0 Disagree0

Less of the Clark bashing. He has every right to call for that, and why can't a video referee overrule the officials in the case of penalties. Obviously awarding them is a different matter altogether. As I recall I didn't have huge complaints over the penalties and it was embarrassing the one given to chelsea.

I'm reading that Stevie G is carrying an injury and will take an injection to play in next weeks friendly against Germany.
I hope this is not true Ed because if I was BR I'd drag his ass back to Melwood so he can get fit for our next league game. He does not need to play in a friendly when he is unfit even when it's against high profile opponents like Germany.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Rogers should drop him if he does the seriously its a friendly

Agree0 Disagree0

It seems a pointless thing to do, but I guess he wants to lay against Germany as the Captain of England.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with AG, for an English player, Eng v Ger are big matches and to do it as captain must be hard to turn down, even if only as a friendly! Just hope he doesn't get further injured that's all!

Agree0 Disagree0

I no but he is always slow and sloppy after the international break I was delighted to hear he was sitting it out with Everton on the return would be nice

Agree0 Disagree0

Good memories of Liverpool 5 Germany 1 back in 2001 in Munich. From memory, Owen hit a hat-trick and Gerrard and Heskey got the others. Wonder what odds you'd get on that result now, 5000-1 maybe?

Agree0 Disagree0

If he plays the full 90 against Germany I think he will be poor in the derby especially given its a Saturday 12.45 kick off. I'm surprised and disappointed that he's putting himself at risk in a friendly when LFC have a massive game coming up. Hope he proves me wrong on Saturday!

Ed01 how are you rating Glen Johnson so far this season. Do you think we play better with him in the side. I know he is on high wages but who do you reckon we could replace him that would improve us. Cheers {Ed001's Note - I have to say that it is mixed for me. He is looking more solid than usual defensively, but I don't think, surprisingly, that he is suited to play the wing back role. His habit of constantly cutting inside, either with or without the ball, reduces his effectiveness in that role. As a full back it is not so bad, as there are more options from the midfield able to get wide. For me I would say McLaughlin is the future right back and we already have him. I don't see a need to replace Johnson, just slowly integrate the youngster and fade Johnson out over the next year or two.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You seem to really rate McLaughlin ed1. Is this because you know the lad or have some sort of connection? Or do you really think he is a great prospect? I ask because I honesty don't watch much of the u21/18s. What makes him so highly rated? {Ed001's Note - it is because he is an outstanding prospect. He has all the attributes required for the right full/wing back role and stands out every time I watch him at youth level. It is time he had a shot at first team football to see if he really is good enough.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks for your opinion Ed01. Yeah I kind of agree, i'd not want to replace him with just another new expensive signing. i'd want him to stay a few more years while he is in such good form and it will give the younger lads something to aim for.

Agree0 Disagree0

McLaughlin is young, but he has all the tools to become a successful modern-day fullback. He is fast, agile, very attack-minded and can run all game! He needs to work on his positioning, but that will improve as he gets experience.

I think he is ready for first team football. I am sorry to say, but it looks increasingly like Kelly might just not make it with us and I hope, BR gives young Ryan Mac a chance instead of pushing Henderson or Toure out wide if/when Johnson is unavailable.

Agree0 Disagree0

Fair enough ed. Maybe leave a note here the next time he will be playing on lftv ( I read this more than watch tv ) and I'll have a watch. Always good to have our own prospects, however if you get your wish and he plays a game in the first team, and isn't motm, posters here wi soon shoot him down

Agree0 Disagree0

I too rate McLaughlin highly. He's excellent on the attack which is a plus for any modern day full back. He just needs some experience and a loan in January would be excellent. And @AG, Kelly has just returned from injury and not playing his best football, so some time will help him. He has shown potential before but his injuries are a real concern I have to admit. I feel we have too many youngsters trying to break in to first team, and I think some players who almost surely will not have a future with Liverpool, Flanno, for instance must be let go. Like what we did to Spearo. I know its a bit harsh but definitely the club and its future comes first, right?

Agree0 Disagree0

KrishnaYNWA,

I have no doubts that Kelly is a good player, but he is a CB and needs to be played there in my opinion. This will also help with his injury issues but at LFC, I can't see him breaking into the side, . He just seems very fragile and at his age, if he doesn't play regularly and improve, I don't see him making it.

Agree0 Disagree0

He is beyond good when he is playing but he is injured far too much to continue being no1. He needs individual attention. if we are winning games by two goals with 20-15mins remaining then take him off. And also when training don't make him go to hard because 95% of the time his injuries come on the training pitch not during games.

And I truly think that McLaughlin is our Second best RB why BR plays Kelly or Flano ahead of him I do not know. for me Flanagan needs a January loan or a January sale to add funds for beefing up the attack.

Hi all.

Just wondering what everyone's take is on Stevie G having pain killer injections to enable him to play for England against Germany next Tuesday?
I think he could of sat out these meaningless games, he will be guaranteed his place on the plane to Brazil.
I think with the tough run of games we have now until New year, our captain should of thought about the club first.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Pointless in my opinion as there is a chance he might aggravate the injury and could be out for longer.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't know he must not know that we have a derby, tottenham, chelsea and man city yet to play.

Ed, I have seen you mention we are still interested in Costa, who if I am right has signed a new contract since the summer?
Also, we have seen that even if we had interest in Lallana he probably wouldn't be available as he is so dedicated to Southampton and they're doing well etc.
Now would that not also be true of Costa? The fella has swapped international allegiance ahead of a World Cup in Brazil, his home nation, because Spain have given him everything, more importantly Atletico, who are going extremely well, consistently, so would he too therefore be unattainable for similar reasons to Lallana?

{Ed002's Note - You will have to find which Ed told you this - it certainly wasn't me.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The end of Ed001 reply to Adrian Lopez post on the rumours page.

though we do still want Diego Costa for definite, so maybe the monitoring of him is being either misread or packaged with a watch on Adrian.}

Anfield Apple {Ed001's Note - yes but we are only monitoring him just in case. It is not a case of 'we are about to move for him', it is a case of 'keep an eye on him in case his circumstances change as Spain is in financial meltdown and his club could be hit and need to sell'. I was not suggesting we were going to sign him, nor do I feel it is in any way likely, unless they do end up in financial difficulties. My point was merely that we are still interested if he becomes available and so the talk of Adrian could be simply someone getting their forwards mixed up. Often a journalist will only know that Liverpool reps have been speaking to a particular club or scouts have been seen watching that club. They will then often make (un)educated guesses as to which player(s) it will be regarding. I was suggesting that could be the case here, possibly, as I don't have anything definite regarding us after Adrian and what I have seen of him doesn't suggest a player we would be chasing.}

Ed001 mentioned our sustained interest in Costa in a reply to a post on the rumours page from Dezyboy at 22:31 on 13th Nov? {Ed002's Note - Ed001 has provided an answer now. I would not hold out any hopes whatsoever of Diego Costa moving to Liverpool in January.}

Thanks for clarification eds. Financial situation in Spain probably makes almost any transfer even minutely possible at the minute I guess, and therefore worth keeping tabs on. {Ed001's Note - exactly, and you can't just move for a player you have scouted in the past without keeping regular tabs on them, in case something changes. Scouts will be used to monitor the progress of every player we have even minor interest in, sometimes it may only be a couple of times a year, sometimes it will be a lot more. Each scout will check out probably a hundred players for each player we make any attempt to sign. I seem to remember it being estimated that a club will attempt to sign roughly a hundred players for every one that actually does join.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Apart from Moyes of course - he can't even sign the one :) {Ed001's Note - Moyes was never going to sign anyone other than Fellaini and, if possible, Baines during the summer. It takes him months to do all the background checks he requires on signings. They didn't call him 'Dithering Dave' for nothing at Everton!}

Fellow reds last January we signed two gems who were forgotten men the next big thing that it never happened for it think Rogers may try sign similar players just wondering about anyone think of the new forgotten man we could sign the next big thing who never was any ideas

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Well i'm currently sitting in a freezing cold shop eating a tuna butty and a bag of doritos, add to this i'm about three stones heavier than any player we've got and 36 years old do I class as a forgotten man? Please say yes. i'm sure i'm quite normal thinking that Brendan is going to walk in and say "jesus, I thought we may have struggled in the January transfer market but I think I've just found an ageing 5'10" fifteen stone immobile colossus who can fill a (large) hole in midfield."
Need a cup of tea and a biccy now, all that typpings tired me out.

{Ed002's Note - Do you find sandwiches taste better when cut diagonally?}

Agree0 Disagree0

Lloriente is not getting on at juventus imo he would do a good job at premiership football, pastore would prob be the player we need for midfield.capel could be the back up on the wings we need for certain games r impact sub. {Ed002's Note - Juventus were considering loaning Llorente out but right now he is in the side (albeit due to injuries) so I don't see a January transfer.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Diagonal is king. End of. Two boss corners and then a full middle. Its the only way.

Agree0 Disagree0

A triangle has 3 corners!

Agree0 Disagree0

I am aware of the third corner of a triangle AG but youve got to hold it by the third corner, eat the two sharp corners then get stuck into the middle working towards the final corner. In fact I might not get as far as the last corner, it may just be a discarded crust. I hope I have made myself clear.

Was told by a derby fan yesterday that sterling is on is way to derby on loan and Hughes to Liverpool for 7mil + add ons any truth in this. {Ed002's Note - Not that I am aware.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The chase for Hughes will go a long way and finally we'll lose out to another club. If we want him that much we must snap him up quick.

If Suarez carries on in the same form, and if he stays free of trouble, how much will he be worth by next Summer?
Or is there a clause in his contract that may influence this? {Ed002's Note - You need to ignore contractual issues.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If he stays out of trouble, finishes close to top scorer and has a good World Cup then it has got to be mega bucks. A good international tournament esp the World Cup usually sees a players price rocket. I suspect that if he is to go then his new employers would look to get business done at the start of the window if possible. Ill stick my neck out and predict that if he does go it will be for at least £10 million more than we sold Torres for.

Agree0 Disagree0

1 gazillion and 1 pound

Agree0 Disagree0

For every goal he scores, his fee will be higher. He`s going nowhere in jan or if he goes, someone will have some serious explaining to do because selling your best player is NOT the way to succeed (atm, see spurs). BR and the owners played a blinder in the summer and to see them laying an egg on the issue especially now that we are FINALLY competing is unfathomable at best. He`s going nowhere in jan like I had predicted in the summer because BR and Henry will NOT stand for that.

Hi eds and fellow reds

Not posted in a long time but I'm a daily visitor to this site and being so far away Australia it gives me great pleasure to be able to keep up to date with all the info that is provided on this site. A big thank you to the eds who give up a lot of their free time to keep this site going.

Firstly eds if I can direct a question to you. I read a couple of weeks ago that Addidas were prepared to stump up half of Messi's buy out clause for him to go to Chelsea. Now I'm not privy to how the transfer system exactly works over there but surely it must be illegal.

Now onto our season so far and I must admit to being extremely happy with the progress being made this year Under Brendan Rodgers, who I think has done a very good job so far and is constantly evolving as time goes on.
Also I have read numerous posts about the pros and cons of Lucas and is he really any good. All I can say is anybody remember Makelele. He to was not a standout player who didn't score many goals, but Real Madrid never recovered in my opinion when they let him go to Chelsea who benefited from this so don't knock anyone who is not your stereotypical superstar for we would be a less of a team without him.

Looking forward to the rest of the season and hoping for top4 and beyond.
Love the site
Aussie Jim {Ed001's Note - it is not illegal for a sponsor to agree to pay money towards a transfer, but it is not true that Adidas were prepared to do so. It would be a pointless thing for them to do, not sure who dreamt that lunacy up!}

Ed002 said there may be a possibility benzema could be used in the offer for Suarez. So a simple questionto everyone, would you accept 20m and benzema for suarez? {Ed002's Note - A good question Benny. Let me put it in to context first. Benzema, has been struggling in Spain and there is a clear need for him to move on. In the first instance Real Madrid will look to sell Benzema with Arsenal and PSG the two destinations which might provide a home for him. After that, if they cannot sell, he will become part of the offer for Suarez if his club has their way - but I have no feeling for how that would interest the player. It is also possible that Real Madrid will divert attention away from Suarez toward another English based player, but I doubt his club will want to sell nor want Benzema.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

This would surely depend on your valuation of both players. On current form, which is all we can go on, Benzema would be worth what, 20? On current form Suarez must be worth 60?
It's hard to know what goes on inside Suarez's head. At times he acts like he would be happy to stay with us if we were in the CL and challenging for the title. Other times it appears he can't wait to leave regardless of where we finish.
He's surely a bit of a nutter, but at the moment, he's our nutter and for that we must be happy. Just think, if he did stay a few more years, he would be talked about in the same breath as Dalglish, SG and Keegan.

Agree0 Disagree0

I hope they do divert there attention elsewhere! Not that Suarez would be short of admirers, am I right in assuming this player that you refer to is 1 of Hazard or Mata?
Cheers {Ed002's Note - No, but it is unimportant.}

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Nov 2013 10:11:38
do you personally feel benzema, if offered into the deal, would just reject Liverpool straight off the bat?
I remember someone here said real's cash offer was actually less than arsenals? at around 36m. So what is their own valuation of karim? what will they look for from arsenal and co. {Ed002's Note - I personally expect Benzema to be sold and the money used to fund a bid for a new forward. I would think he will want a Champions League side. I would not get wrapped up in any offer values. I explained the situation over the summer but posters tend to not always be rational about the values of Liverpool players.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Id always be rational of valuations. Too a club like real that could pay through the noses, and suarez current form, you have to be looking high. however he is quite old, which plays down his valuation, not to mention his antics. I can see real bidding 50m, if they're serious about wanting to be on top of la liga and the champions league. Much will depend on whether they can off load benzema for more cash, than what his worth would be in a swap deal.

Agree0 Disagree0

No I wouldn't.

I wouldn't sell Suarez to anyone for any price in January. It would totally disrupt our promising start to the season. We have a good chance of top 4 if Suarez and Sturridge stay fit and on form.

Real can wait until the Summer. {Ed002's Note - I would think that Liverpool will want to keep Suarez through the January window, but his "people" are concerned that Real Madrid will turn their attentions elsewhere and have re-approached (to my knowledge) three clubs about him.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Benzema will not be joining Liverpool. His work ethic is terrible, rarely crosses the halfway line defensively. Runs head down and often picks the wrong pass. This is always highlighted in his APPAULING international performances. It's no surprise France are banging in goals no Giroud's playing rather than Benzema, one's a team player with a cool head.The other a headless rabbit who's selfish without the ability to back it up.

Agree0 Disagree0

If I am correct, Suarez is 26. How on earth is that old. You got it spot on with the antics though, Benny

Agree0 Disagree0

Liverpool should stay VERY far away from Benzema. He`s lazy, ineffective, selfish and thinks he`s better than he actually is. We`ve had enough of those and we are done with them.

Agree0 Disagree0

It is important that Liverpool do everything possible to keep Suarez at the club for the rest of the season.

The main thing is that the Suarez and Sturridge partnership WORKS! So why change it?

As the saying goes "Why try to fix something that isn't broken?"

How do we know that Benzema or whoever comes in will have an instant impact? We don't! It is a risk NOT worth taking.

At least with Suarez we know that even if he wants to leave Liverpool, it will not affect his on-field performance and if we do qualify for Champions League he may even decide to stay.
