Feel very humbled (again) today, I explained to one my step-sons who is aged 16 and a Toffee! That it could easily have happened to a different team on that fateful, we had got Nottingham Forest and it could easily have been Everton that year, he was interested and wanted to understand. I remember that terrible day playing for Prescot Cables and the horror that unravelled, and on reflection knowing that if we hadn't been playing that day then I would have gone the match with my mates. Respect to all who remember, survivors, the 96 families and their lost loved ones and those whose still grieve.

Thoughts are with your city today for those who lost their lives.

Silence now on the green grass
Where songs were sung
Some quite daft
For eleven
As the ball was kicked
For eleven
Our souls were ripped.

How many of us have lost sleep?

Thank you Liverpool Fc for making me look this bad!

I am a Manchester United fan but am not one who frequents your page. However today I feel that football rivalries have no meaning and I wanted to say that my thoughts and prayers are with every one of the 96 and their families. I stood on those very terraces with United several months before the tragic event and then remember watching the TV in utter horror 25 years ago today. We all stand together today in the wish there is true justice after all this time, may they rest in peace.

May they continue to rest in peace.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

There has been a lot of love shared these last few days by fans of all clubs. Roberto Martinez summed it up nicely. We are all fans of football, and no one should ever go out on a Saturday to follow the club they love, and not come home. We are united in our love of football, and are like a bunch of brothers scrapping over our individual loyalties. All our thoughts are with the families of the 96. And it means more than you will ever know that the football family stand with us. Thank you.

It boggles the mind to think we could quite conceivably win the league with pretty much the exact same squad we had last season

JFT 96

Believable0 Unbelievable0

To be fair, since around the introduction of Sturridge/Coutinho in the winter window last season, we've played pretty well. It was really only the first half of BR's first season where things were not going super-well.

Agree0 Disagree0

To add to your mind boggling in reverse man united could finish 7th with the same squad that won the league!

Hello Eds,
First off I'd just like to give a mention to the wonderful memorial service today at Anfield. Great tributes to the 96, and lovely readings from both Rodgers and Martinez. I just had a quick question regarding transfers. Having lived in Bilbao I follow a lot of Athletics games and have been really impressed with there forward play. I was wondering seeing as they are playing some great free flowing counter attacking football (ie the second goal this weekend) is there any interest from Liverpool in there players or even English club interest in general? Thanks for your time!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - There is no interest in any of their players from Liverpool at this time, although a couple of clubs maintain an interest in Muniain.}

15 Apr 2014 17:09:41
Question if I may on the loan system in the Premier League. I know the Championship sides put in place restrictions on foreign loans after the Watford debacle, but do you see the Premier League taking a similar stance moving forward? I notice there has been increased criticism of Everton in particular from other clubs and was curious if there were any expectations of changes to the rules for the PL moving forward?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - It is something that has been discussed by the FA and one day may change. The Dutch FA have had similar discussions.}

Given the skewed nature of football finances (i.e. a lot of the wealth concentrated in few hands) surely those sort of loan deals of which Everton have benefitted from are the only way that so called "lesser" clubs can hope to compete and change the dominant hierarchy? Everton could not have bought the players they loaned and, without them, surely would not be as high as they are in the table. The Premier League is focusing on the wrong thing if they think loan deals are somehow ruinous to PL competition.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not sure what I think about it Seano, really, as I can see merits to both sides of the argument. I do think if the likes of Arsenal (and perhaps others) were to finish below Everton then there will be some noise made about it though.

I just wanted to point out, that myself and many others this season called on Rodgers to sign another CDM, as Lucas was pretty much unchallenged.

Since dropping Gerrard to that role, the team has played better and Gerrards form has also gone up.
Whether that's down to the position change, the little rest he had beforehand or simply Rodgers tactical nous, IMO it's made a massive difference to our title bid.

We are flying, Gerrards playing better football than he has for a few seasons and thanks to his position change, we now get Gerrard playing top level for another few years. Great move.
We also don't need to sign another CDM now, saving money for other areas. Awesome.

Also, just a quick note on Alberto, Aspas and co.

Obviously you don't need to be a genius to see it's not worked out for them this season, whilst disapointing on a practical level, it's also disapointing on a financial level, BUT.
I was under the impression that our policy on signing young players with a sell on value etc was for this reason. We can probably recoup 70% of our transfer fees on them this summer, so whilst disapointing, it shouldn't be as damaging financially as say the losses felt on the Carroll/Downing transfers.
I suppose you can take this anyway you like, transfer blunder or inevitable error, but being the glass half full kinda guy I am, I'll say this is proof the long term plan is viable.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I don't think you can say any of them are blunders.
Rodgers is a magician.
Look at what he has done with every member of our squad. I can't think of one player who hasn't improved since he joined.
Skrtel looked odds on to leave. Look at him now.
Henderson was definitely in the waste of money pile along with Carroll and Downing.
Now we're all worried that he's not going to be available for three of the most crucial games in Liverpool Football Club's history.
That's what I love about Rodgers, he gives the players a chance and they know if they take it, they'll be rewarded with his loyalty.
The reason Aspas and Alberto haven't kicked on is because they haven't taken their chances. Everyone else has.
It must be so tough playing in that squad as you but also, professionally, what a challenge!
They must love it as look at the results!
I did not like Rodgers and I can't believe I'm admitting to this but I wanted AVB to replace Dalglish.
Thank God I have nothing to do with the hiring process at Anfield.
No matter what he does from now on he has transformed our team and our club.
He has made our team the most exciting, vibrant, skillful, quick and competitive in the premiership.
I just can't wait for the next four games.
And not only that, the next 4 years, the next 8, 12, 16 under Rodger's guidance.

Agree0 Disagree0

Flidby, What chances have they had? Rodgers doesn't change a winning team more often than not (why should he?)

But both Alberto and Aspas have come from foreign leagues so a bedding in period was expected (Alberto has hardly ever played senior football at any club).

Aspas started some games early in the season and again there is a bedding in period expected and he has hardly had a look in since, not saying he deserved one (maybe more minutes when we have games tied up would be nice) but there's no way you play Aspas when Suarez and Sturridge play the way they are.

But to say they haven't kicked because they haven't taken chances is silly, they haven't had any chances Alberto has never started for the club! The longest period he has had is 30 minutes in one game! The only game Aspas started as a striker he scored.

They will be good players but probably at another club (arguably Aspas proved he is a good player at Celta already)

Agree0 Disagree0

Hey Imred that was the point I was trying to make. The chances they've had have barely practically nil because of other players taking theirs.

Question for the eds regarding goalkeepers if I may.

Is it financially better to be a number 2 in the BPL than a number 1 in the championship or other supposedly inferior European leagues?

Thanks guys.

Justice for the 96.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Players want to play.}

Thanks for the swift reply 02.

Maybe I didn't word the question very well, I'll try again.

I understand that players want to play, but will they earn more money as a number 2 in the prem rather than a number 1 in another league. I don't see any other reason why you would want to be a number 2. If it was me I would rather be a number 1 and earn less than a number 2.

Lets be honest most number 2's only play a handful of times a season. Brad Jones is never going to be number 1 at LFC, he must know this, so why stay?

Thanks again. We all appreciate the great work you and all the eds do.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It will vary depending on the clubs.}

Him and his family is a lfc supporter if i'm not mistaken. yes its true i'd rather earn less and play, but to not play as much but be part of a group I supported since I was kid? I would gladly be in Aspas's place tbh.

Agree0 Disagree0

Suppose if someone is happy to never play, he must be earning more money than he would be getting playing first team football elsewhere.

Brothers in arms be it red or be it blue,
We've known all along that these lies were not true,
Nothing we can do will bring the dead back to life,
Not many many can imagine the loss of a child, a husband or a wife,
But we must go on and be strong for those who fell,
Make sure it's the truth that the history books will tell.

Liverpool is more than just a footballing city,
Liverpool is a footballing family,
And 96 of our children were taken,
So we must make sure that they are never forsaken.

The 15th of April, 13:06,
What happened in that moment has no quick fix,
The fight is a journey that we cannot make alone,
We deserve to see Justice and the truth carved in Stone.

Ed001 and fellow reds, I was thinking about the players we have loaned out:
Borini: Is doing well for Sunderland, will be good for us as a back up striker. We should keep him.
Robinson: He's not living up to his potential/hype. Maybe another loan?
Suso: We need to keep hold of him. Extremely talented and doing well in La Liga.
Assaidi: On his day, he's great; on any other day, he's worse than mediocre. Probably will be better at Stoke.
Coady: Doing quite well at League 1, maybe another loan to a possible PL relegation contender next season will tell us if he's ready or not.
Ilori: I have high hopes from this lad. Hopefully he doesn't turn out to be another Wilson or Coates. I daresay he might be better than Toure.
Reina: No chance of him coming back
McLaughlin: Another guy with tremendous potential. A loan to a high flying Championship team will be optimum.
Wisdom: Like Ilori, I've got high hopes from him. I think he should fight for the first team next season. Maybe, he'll prosper like Flanno.
Ibe: Hard to say about him. He's a great talent but is very very young. Maybe a loan to a championship side again? Or shall we keep him? Tough decision.
Ngoo: I don't see a future for him at LFC
Adorjan: Same as Ngoo
Sokolik: Same as Adorjan and Ngoo

Also, I think we should send Alberto on loan.
You comments welcome (both eds and fellow reds).

Cheers

Believable0 Unbelievable0

My thoughts:

Borini - better back up than Aspas. Probably one more season for the Italian to make his mark. Great attitude - squad place
Robinson - probably time to sell.
Suso - extended contract and squad place next season.
Assaidi - sell
Coady - Championship loan
Ilori - first team squad
Reina - sell
McLaughlin - Championship loan
Wisdom - Tricky. Prem loan or squad player.
Ibe - Championship loan
Others - sold or released

Today is a most poignant day; I was 15 years old when the tradegy unfolded; as a Life long Liverpool fan, what should have been an epic semi-final between 2 masters in Clough and Dalglish turned into a day that is still etched in my memory. The day my fellow Reds from my beloved Liverpool family lost 96 of our own in such a horrendous manner; the aftermath, the cover ups, the smear campaigns were disgraceful and the fight for justice by the families and LFC is a credit to us all and an inspiration to us all to never give up, to always fight until the truth sees the light of day, no matter the hardship, hurdles or bureacracy that are placed in our way; LFC and the families of the 96 are a credit to us all. My tears ran that day, and many times since; I pray that justice is finally served to those culpable for this tragedy; I want this so we can all get some semblance of justice for the 96; I want Stevie to cry the same tears he did on Sunday, on the last day of the season holding aloft the Premier League trophy and dedicating the title to the 96.
The angelic 96, gone in body, never in spirit; may you never walk alone and rest in peace.

eds. can you please explain to me why we are still looking at unproven players from lower level teams even though we are the probable premier league champions, instead of experienced, high quality players that have made a name for themselves?.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea who you are referring to, sorry.}

Probable premier league winners? I think you are getting a bit ahead of yourself jordz. There are still 4 games to go with everything to play for and like every Liverpool fan we will take one game at a time. Maybe if we win our next 3 games and are 2-0 up at half time against Newcastle then we can start saying we will probably win the league. Until then I will bite every nail on my body and pull every last strand of hair on my head out. As for looking at lower league players I am not aware who you may be refering too, but I trust BR so if its a player he likes then we will support his decision. YNWA

Rex

Agree0 Disagree0

Why are we potentially champions?

Because rogers found underated players and turned them into diamonds.

We could buy Nickolas Bentner and as long as it was rogers descision I would be ok with it.

Agree0 Disagree0

He's referring to Ross Barkley; Everton's best player this season & one who would likely get into most of the teams in the top 4. However if we were to spend 38m on a CM I'd prefer Matic (although there is more chance of me going to the moon.)

Although I believe that Mignolet is doing a good job so far, I do think we should look to give him more competition and maybe bring another keeper to the club.

Now, I was thinking of McCarthy at Reading. Looks to be a bit of a talent and we all know that Rodgers rates him. Could he be a possibility? - what would his potential value be?

Of course, there doesn't look to be any particular worries in that department, so does this mean we have any keepers in the youth squads that could make the step-up?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ed, is Brad Friedel out of contract in the summer?

Wouldn't mind him back at Liverpool as back-up to Migs.

Red Rum

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - He is out of contract in the summer.}

There are very few clubs across Europe that actually have a competitive back-up 'keeper. There is an established 'keeper and a solid number 2 usually. It is the same for us IMO. Also, GK is not an area where you want to see chopping and changing. If we stick to Mignolet and just let him improve, he will be fine IMO.

Also, please spare a thought for Brad Jones. He has done nothing wrong whenever given an opportunity, and has been fully professional.

Agree0 Disagree0

I disagree AG, I think if available and willing friedel is exactly what we need. A solid back up keeper to put pressure on mingnolet.

Brad jones is good and a very likable person but we need a better no.2

Agree0 Disagree0

Friedel is older than Migs. & Jones combined (almost). Why waste money on players who will never, er, play. If Jones had been throwing them in fine. He hasn't so what's the beef with him?

Agree0 Disagree0

Agreed, Anfieldboy. I'm not quite sure what Jones has done wrong to have so many eager to replace him. He's willing to be a backup, never complains about it, isn't asking for or taking massive wages, by all accounts is an incredibly nice guy, is a pretty decent keeper or has performed well enough in the few games he has played, on top of which the guy has absolutely fabulous hair for which I am immensely jealous.

I agree boys. I've been really happy with Jones performances.
Eds, I know a player needs 10 appearances to get a winners medal, does this apply with Goalkeepers too? Although having said that, I'm not sure Jones has a single PL appearance to his name this season.

Pity we didn't get a longer cup run to let Jones get a few more games!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Clubs can make an application for additional medals to be provided. Cup games don't count.}

Such exciting times for Liverpool. Over the past few weeks I have been trying to keep myself content and not think about the prospect of the league title but in a season where we've already done so much, broken almost every record it would be a shame and if we don't win the league. Best chance we've had since prem league was created. Saying that, however the season finishes we have done extremely well.

I just hope gerrard can rally the troops for what's necessary in the last 4 games. We have an excellent record against norwich but the game still scares me.

And what about raheem sterling and couthino?

What individually brilliant goals from both in such a high pressure game and when our sas were a bit of there game. These boys stepped up big time. The future is so bright

Eds and reds,
If we take away Roberto Firmino then that leaves us with two players for each position.
Marcos Rojo and Ryan Bertrand for left back. Competition for Jose Enrique.
Dani Parejo and Ivan Rakitic for centre midfield. Competition for Henderson.
Viktor Fischer and Yevhen Konoplyanka for winger/forward. Competition for Sterling.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - These are simply players the club have looked at.}

We definitely are NOT going to buy 2 LB, 2 Cm and 2 LM. I won't be surprised if we end up buying none of these players either.

Ed02,
Am I right in thinking the left back is a replacement for Aly Cissokho?
The centre midfielder is competition for Jordan Henderson?
The winger/forward is a replacement for Victor Moses?

So as well as the young loan players returning, this provides more squad depth which we need next season.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It is simply a case of strengthening the squad.}

You want to end up with 24-25 in your squad with a few kids on the edge getting used to being on bench etc. Squad depth isn't numbers - it's having a deeper pool of talent.

Agree0 Disagree0

Eds and reds,
I did not mean we would buy two players for each position, I meant these are the most recent players linked and they are two players for each position we need to strengthen in.
A left back to replace Aly Cissokho, a centre midfielder to compete with Jordan Henderson and a winger/forward to replace Victor Moses.

Agree0 Disagree0

Wouldn't say its completion for hendo, but a chance to bring in a player who will slot straight in. As Chelsea do! Whoever they pick in cm out of lamps matic luiz Ramires they all bring something

Agree0 Disagree0

Conbicks. What about Piazon, Romeu, Atsu, Marin, Hazard etc. Not all Chelsea's millions are spent on players "going straight in". It's a balance of for now and for the future and it's never a precise science. Our equivalent of the list above is Alberto, Texeira & Suso. Ilori is a much cheaper (and less ready) Kurt Zouma. When you compare apples with apples we are doing badly here.

Morning all.

Am told we have scouted Divock Origi of Lille on a few occasions this season and have had favourable reports about the player.
Do you see him as a signing for us in the summer?
Looks like the type of player that would improve under BR guidance.

Ed02, if you are around, can I take this opportunity to ask whether LFC, like many other teams across Europe, looks at youngsters when they break into other teams. The young winger at Leverkusen, Digne when he was at Lille, Shaw an obvious choice, a number of youngsters at Barca and Real, Alberto Moreno etc.

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool will be looking at players of all ages.}

Good morning friends. I am ashok. I live in India and I am die hard LFC fan. I was reading an extract from an interview with Bruce grobbelaar and I was so emotional and touched I literally cried. I wish we can win the title and devote it to families and the 96 fans who lost their life's. Rip the legends.

I'm just off the night shift. Spent my time trawling the Internet (hope my boss isn't a Liverpool fan or I'm sacked!). Anyway, been reading quite a few articles about yer man Eriksen plays for Spurs. Apparently he's looking out. He only just signed. and sure, he's strung a couple of good games together. But now he wants out! Some loyalty. What did them bad Spurs do to him? Only bring him from Ajax to the best league in the world. Stuff loads of money into his pocket and give him a great stage to play football. Glad we didn't get that clown!

Anyone else catch the video of Coutinho's son singing his Coutinho-o-o after he scored the winner? Thought it was quite funny. Hard to believe that guy has a kid; just mind boggling.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hard to believe but according to rumours sterling has 5!

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm fairly sure he doesn't have a kid. His wife, Aine, regularly posts videos of her nephew I think it is, so I assumed he was the wee boy in the video? I could well be wrong though. Either way, it's a funny video, and if he ends up being half as good as Philippe then BR should sign him up right now!

Is every team effected by the ffp rules or is it just teams that are in the Champions and Europa leagues?

If so then are we trying to curb our spending in an attempt to abide by those rules for next season when we are back in it?

Say for example a rich oil baron decides to buy Crystal Palace, could they spend whatever they like on players or would they be restricted like everyone else?

Just trying to get my head around what ffp accomplishes.

As far as I am aware - and I'm sure someone may correct me, or be a little more specific - but, I think it's really about being able to spend what you bring in through revenue. So, that could be player sales, shirt sales, gate receipts or sponsorship. Ultimately, if you are running at a loss, you'd need to make up that shortfall.

Again, that is a very basic explanation - I'm sure others will know more about it's exact ruling, certainly Ed02 knows a lot about it and has detailed it in the past, so you may want to try the search function

{Ed002's Note - There will be UEFA FFP rules and Premier League FFP rules.}

I realise this is a bit of a general question so it may prove difficult to fully answer. But I read recently that Konopalyenko can't wait to come to us. I also read that several other top players are interested in moving to Liverpool.
In the past it seemed difficult to recruit/attract the top, top players. However is there some kind of change in how we are now perceived among the better players? Can we realistically expect to sign some of the cream of Europe again?
(This is not to take anything away from the excellent players we already have). It is merely to ask weather Liverpool are now attractive to the likes of Mkhtaryan etc.

How much will Liverpool win if they are to lift the Premier League trophy? Heard it was around £100m

Believable0 Unbelievable0

95 mill I think, to be noted that there is not a lot of difference in the winnings amounts teams top 4 all get above 90

Agree0 Disagree0

Asked this earlier in the season, the new TV deal kicks in next season so the winners next season get 100M.

I think the winners get around 60M this year.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not a huge difference between positions actually. I think the 20th placed team gets £60 million.

Agree0 Disagree0

Prize money for first place is £99 million
the top table goes like this
1.99
2.94
3.92
4.90
5.88
It then goes down roughly 2 mil per place till 13th, then 1 mill per place till 20th

Not sure if anyone's posted this but I was just checking on Suso and here's a report on his performance v Valencia:

Two minutes later, Almeria refused to take the foot off the gas, with Suso pulling the strings, Corono scored the equalising goal in the 54th minute.

"The remaining 30 minutes was a Suso highlight reel, as the Liverpool loanee continued to attack the Valencia defence, forcing Vicente Guaita to make save after save and prove he’s capable of being Valencia’s keeper."

From insidespanishfootball, don't know it myself but they don't seem to have a reason to talk him up if he didn't play well.

And, more importantly, RIP and JFT 96. Today's a day when the Liverpool family is more important than ever. YNWA takes on a new meaning on this day.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Welcome back Suso!

JFT 96

Agree0 Disagree0

He's not even been starting every game for them

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Suso has learned a lot in his time at Almeria, not just on footballing terms either.

"fanantic viewer", Suso has been involved in 32 of Almeria's 33 La Liga games this season, and has started 26/32 games. For a 20 year old, playing in a relegation threatened team, scoring 2 and assisting 9 goals, on the way gaining many plaudits is commendable IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

He has started a lot of games the manager has to play different now as its about staying up maybe some1 more defensive
