We need to cool all the pessimism on these pages let's just all imagine we get taken over by the Qatari royal family next week and they gave you director of football position. "you have £60million to spend in these next 2 weeks" they tell you, who do you buy? I'd get lamela for £28m, sakho for £10m, and give Madrid £20m + the moaner (total worth £75m) for coentrao (£20m), Di Maria (£20m), alonso (£10m) and ozil (£25m), and strike a deal to bring David Ngog back to the club so we can all piss ourselves watching his first touch.
So our starting line up come September:
Mignolet; Johnson, sakho, agger, coentrao; gerrard, alonso; Lamela, coutinho, Di Maria/ ozil; sturridge
And a bish-bash-Bosh-kaboom! Where's the pessimism now?

Remember all this is very, very unlikely to happen, just trying to show you we can't bemoan fsg for resources they don't have! It's like slagging off Jones for not scoring any last year, but its not his job as a goalkeeper to score, in the same way fsg aren't trying to spend all this money on players who won't care about who they play for as long as they get a pay day, they're looking for hungry young players who won't cost too much but will return lots of money in the long run by securing us champions league money under their wizard BR, meaning we can live by means of our own resources like Dortmund

Post of the month . I'm pressing the like button toddythered!

Agree0 Disagree0

I can accept that Jones didn't score, but to not even have one shot on goal? He obviously doesn't suit our system.

I think that Spurs are in with a fantastic shout this year if they keep Bale on top of their signings, although I think with the £60 million they've spent already, I imagine these signings are to replace Bale. I'm very happy with our summer signings although we still need that left player and defender. Personally, I'm fed up with Suarez but there's 2 weeks or so left of the window, it is far too late to replace him.

I'm not convinced we will sign Willian, but could you imagine if we brought in Willian and Sakho and kept Suarez. Jesus, that would launch us into top 4! Currently, top 6 will be City, Chelsea, United, Spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal. I cannot wait for the season to start! let's get a win against Stoke and start as we mean to go on!

the scouting of players supposed to be have done a long time ago. we are now scrapping for whatever is available . we seem to have fallen way down the order as far as player preferance is concerned . the once mighty Liverpool have fallen from grace. once again reality has hit us . FOREVER RED

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Do us a favour mate and wind ya neck right in. Even arsenal and utd are struggling to get players in and they have CL football to offer. So chill out and keep the faith.

Ynwa

Agree0 Disagree0

You are only just realising this now? It has been this way for a few years mate. No champions league football instantly reduces the number of players who would come. But would you want said players? Look what Suarez has done to the club. We are building our way forward with the best players available who are willing to join. That is enough for me.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2013 14:27:19
Christian Eriksen agent confirms he will only leave for a club that has qualified for the champions league and is fighting for titles every year.that rules us out boys, just read Brendan Rodgers recent interview again he confirms that no transfer is imminent the season starts on sat and with all the players that have left this summer I think we are in serious danger of being a bit short in defence and on the wings.the same thing happened last summer when left our business too late why don't we ever learn? do you honestly think we will sign any more players? we must have money too spend.

I understand why a lot of people on here are nervous to see if we do sign any other players before the end of the transfer window. After what happened last year, I am the same. But we are not in the same position as last year, that we had one out and out striker till January now we have 4 (including Suarez).

But I do agree that we do ideally need an out and out winger or 2 and a LB and I would also like to see another CB, but we'll see. I for one am happy with the signings that we have made so far, ok they may not be of the media impact of Soldado or Paulinho but I believe they are solid signings.

Also I've seen posts saying that we haven't spent any money this year due to sales, that FSG don't want to spend money. The Eds have said it time and again, you can't just take the sale or purchase price into account. There's signing on fee's, agent fee's, etc. Where do you think that comes from?

Here's hoping for a great season.

Would anyone take Walcott and cash for Suarez? I would personally I think he would fit right in with our style of play and if you look at his stats from last season he got over 10 goals and over 10 assists from mainly playin out wide. I think him coutinho and sturridge would be unbelievable as a front 3. I would offer them Suarez for Walcott and say 20mil? Walcott cost arsenal if i'm correct around 12mil all them years ago. He has obviously improved and I would now value him as around a 25mil player. This means we are getting a combined total of around £45mil. Any chance in this happening Eds?

Reading lots of posts about how spurs are signing great players and they are, but they will have to gel don;t forget.

Personally I have always though this season Spurs will finish top 4 (if Bale stays) but as far as I am concerned if he goes let them buy who they want because a actually think it will do them no good to sign anymore players then they have now.

They are not players who will want to sit on the bench. They are players who if they do not get top 4 will possibly want out for less than was paid for them. Levy can play hard ball of course but then he may be stuck with a team of players who do not want to be there.

I do not disagree at all they have purchased well, but I do think we can get wrapped up in all this and forget teams do not just gel overnight

What u talking mate. your post means, a team should only have 11 memebers, who plays week in week out.?
Spurs would finihs above us,, No matter where we finish, They are a solid side with top 4 quality playerss

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2013 13:32:57
I am not sure. But, If spurs pull of willian, lamela and errikson for Bale. Then I would personally go and meet Levy and Give a high five.
Jesus, what a team that is. Better than city and cheslea.
negrado. navas, silva aguerao. who?
That would a bad news for UTD and Arsenal

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think Eriksen's agent has stipulated again that his client won't be joining a non Champions League club. In terms of Lamela and Willian that would be two more players on fairly high end wages. They would be taking a huge punt on attaining Champions League football this year and maybe rightly so? I think location substantially helps Spurs in attracting players also, let's hope we haven't seen the end of our business as we currently do not possess a squad capable of reaching that top four. 1 or 2 quality signings then maybe.

Agree0 Disagree0

Youd give him a high 5 after he'd pulled all them off!

Dirty Harry!!

Agree0 Disagree0

Hmm I'm kinda wondering are you a Spurs fan Harry because you posted the same on the Arsenal page with the opening line, Liverpool fan in peace lol.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd rather have navas, silva and definitely aguero.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'll give you one thing Harry, while some may say you're clueless, at least you're consistent.

Agree0 Disagree0

The name's "Aguero" ; Ken Aguero.

Agree0 Disagree0

They simple will not be able to pull off all 3 of them, high profile players are being linked with them as everyone knows that they will have a very healthy sum of money when Bale leaves and i'm sure the players they go after will have there prices infatuated so the selling team gets the best possible deal.

Agree0 Disagree0

It would be the final nail in Liverpool's coffin of EVER getting in the top four.

Agree0 Disagree0

Got to agree with you there harry if spurs bring them in with only the loss of bale there no longer a 1 man team they will have weapons all over the pitch they threw away top 4 last year can't see it happening again if and its a huge IF they could get them 3 in but can't see them getting all 3 in maybe 1 but they still look good with there recent additions interesting season ahead I think with all the signing pressure has to be on avb to deliver this year

Agree0 Disagree0

Buying loads of boss players is sound but if they cannot gel properly or work as a team or have ego clashes then it counts for very little. United won the title last year with the weakest squad of the teams who finished top 3.

Agree0 Disagree0

Spurs can try.

They should remember that Real tried this approach with their "Galacticos". Barca subsequently wiped the floor with them with a team built from their academy.

This is a very expensive, and not necessarily successful, approach.

I see Fergie lite is complaining about the opening fixtures, didn't take him long to raise the question of a conspiracy!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He's getting his excuses in early.
It's usually our job to moan about fixture lists and united fans jobs to rip us for suggesting a conspiracy.
Let's hope they don't ride their luck over the first 5 games and they suffer.

Agree0 Disagree0

Fergie always moaned about fixtures along with every other excuse in the book.

Agree0 Disagree0

Look at our last seasons fixtures the 1st 6 or 7 games were against the top teams

Agree0 Disagree0

Look at the fixture list they got last year, is it any wonder they won the league with such an easy start. LFC had a real difficult one but Brendan didn't moan about it.

Must be the first time in the last 20 years United have had a difficult start.

Irrespective, Moyes is definitely sending out the wrong message to his team. Fergie would have welcomed the hard start and fired his team up, whereas Fergies poodle has immediately got the team worrying before the first balls been kicked.

Who comes up with all these reports that turn out to be nothing?
According to reports (they don't say who, just reports) Liverpool have made this and that offer or eyeing up the situation or have scouts watching. TOTAL RUBBISH

I wish FSG come out and say that our days of £20M+ transfers are over. We will buy players (some very good) from Swansea, Celta vigo etc and BR will mould them into a team, how good a team we will have to see. Suarez needs convincing, probably 3/4th best player in world, he does not want to battle to get top4, he wants to challenge and I do not blame him. We can't expect him to stay because we love him! Willan? Come on, guys, let's not get ahead of ourselves. I, as much as the next fan, would love to see class signed and oppositions torn apart. but only FSG know what their budget is. I'm getting frustrated by not knowing and seeing other teams sign quality. BR is to football what Tony Blaire was to politics. Great talker, media savvy, good PR and. good at his job!
I can't judge him until the window is closed because he made statements and I can't make any comment before that time is reached. It's a long wait for a football fan (2 weeks!) and the more frustrating when there is rumours about teams making offers for our best players!1
Sorry about the long rant, living in London I have to put up with Totts, Gooners and Chelski supporters!
Come on FSG. give me something to shut them up with. YNWA

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Tony Blair good at his job? Funniest thing I have heard in a long time!

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with you, we need to get our business done quickly or someone needs to come out and say we're not going to do anything. we don't need another situations like Dempsey from last year.

However so far this window Liverpool has not splashed any cash as they are a net positive with the latest downing sale.

We definetly need a quality attacking midfielder and a left back. atleast, and this too if suarez doesn't leave. let's hope we get someone in soon

Agree0 Disagree0

Tony Blair WAS good at his job. ok then after him I give you Brown. and Cameron.enuf said I think!
As for our club well yes I agree with the original post 100%.BUT again same question I always ask. why take us out of the hands of the 2 cowboys and then think hhhmmm hang on. maybeeee we can't compete with the big boys money wise.should have sold to Rich Arabs!

Spot on everyone.

Great point made out. By this time, we should have fixed our first team positions, and looking out to add squad players, Instead we did reverse.
I am happy with Asaps, seems an interesting signing.
Toure and Mingolet are readymade replacement. U must have a keeper, if one leaves.
17 days to go, and we are still short of 3 most important position, and it would increase on suarez situation.
People believes we did a great job in handling suarez situation.
HOW?
Has he left?
Is he going?
do we have repalcement?
Whats the money we got?
how many days left?

superb work eds. you guys have been fantastic. you would have a very crucial 17 days left.

Agree0 Disagree0

Any of you thought about the possibility that we are trying to get our business done, but we don't want to pay over the odds, which is quite hard to do considering our last 2 managers paid waaay over the odds for average players. And add to that that we don't have European football to offer to our targets. FSG has got the money and are willing to back Rodgers if and when he finds value for money (i.e. Sturridge & Coutinho)
It's going to be a very long 2 weeks, but luckily the season starts on saturday!

Agree0 Disagree0

Dalglish Loyalist:

Tony Blair was good at his job, if you believe that his job was to be the public face of the Labour Party and be able to "sell" to the general public whatever the policy makers were coming up with.

I think, I may be wrong, that was where the orginal poster may have been coming from with the comparison to BR?

Agree0 Disagree0

Wow, a prime minister who took us into an illegal war which in turn led to the unlawful deaths of Iraq civilians and British troops was good at his job?

Well, we are entitled to an opinion I suppose, but the blood on the hands of a liar does nothing for me.

Anyway, back to football.

Agree0 Disagree0

They are obviously chasing players of that caliber and have bid for HM earlier in the window.
So, you are wrong there, and further weakened your arguement by using a Tony Blair comparison.

Agree0 Disagree0

T Blair: Led uk into an illegal war and cost the UK hundreds of lives and billions of pounds. Then he jumped ship just before the global recession.

Can't wait to see how Brendan will match that.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with you 100 % . players of quality is what we need and they should have been brought in a long time ago . red forever

Agree0 Disagree0

Liverpool have bid for Costa at 22m and Mkhitaryan at 20m. They are now willing to spend on Willian so your whole post is nonsense!

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm sorry, but the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom's job is not just electioneering. That ridiculous assertion says everything about the modern voter.

Their job is to lead the country.

I can't say I agreed with his foreign policy or his statement that Iraq could pose a threat to the UK in 45 minutes!

Good job? You guys have LOW standards!

Agree0 Disagree0

Your right AggerDo. His job was to smile big and be media savvy. Which he did.

It was that rubbish eating grin along with great marketing that got Labour back in power.

Pretty cringey when you look back now to see how the population went for it.

Politics on the forum hey!

hey eds,
hypothetically were we to sign willian, would he play on the left side of our attack or in central midfield?

thanks a lot

ynwa {ed002's note - he would play to the left of darren bent who also hypothetically joined, and just ahead of paul konchesky who hypothetically returned. after 68 minutes he will be replaced by a hypothetical paul furlong as rodgers looks for a more direct and less hypothetical approach for the last 20 minutes.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

15 Aug 2013 10:59:36
yeah they r signing good players but they know they r getting 80m in the coffers imo just before deadline, nobody seems that interested in r troubled star player except the non trophy winning bigger club arsenal with their crap 40m and 1pound bid isay put it to arsenal 60m and 1 pound to all the rest away from english football 55m and reinvest quick, before deal is officially reported like spurs r doing.

Agree0 Disagree0

They are a good side without doubt. But not great. I think that they are still weak in defense, have loads of central midfielders who all do the same job and if bale leaves then they will be severely weakened. I am also still not convinced about AVB either.

Agree0 Disagree0

Add Coutinho and Sturridge to the Liverpool signings. Add Holtby to Totenham as well. I think it's Arsenal that are in trouble! If Liverpool sign Willian and Papa they will be competing with the top teams in the country.

Agree0 Disagree0

Looks to me as if they are replacing bale mate.
We will still be bringing in up to 3 more players so let's focus on ourselves, but to be fair it will be ibtresting watching spurs this season with all these new signings.

Agree0 Disagree0

That would have been our side. had the Spuds not nicked all of our transfer targets. ok maybe not ALL of them were out targets but you know what I mean. LOL

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2013 13:08:21
jesus.
How is Spurs have a weak defence than us?
jay and Lloris are pretty solid player at back. Walker is way better than Johnosn.
They just need a solid LB and probably another CB, so as we need.
They have strong midfield, better than us. dembele, and sandro with huddlestone, dempsy, siggurdson, and paulinho.
They have speedstars in the wings, lenon and bale,

Agree0 Disagree0

If spurs hold onto bale with their additions I see them really pushing for 3rd or 4th. That is a stacked midfield

Agree0 Disagree0

Personally, I don't care about Spurs.

Agree0 Disagree0

Cabrio if spurs got all those players (which they will not) they would have loads of individually great players but collectively I think they would struggle massively

You can't buy 7-8 players like that and sit them on the bench and there is no way they would gel in 1 season, so they would miss out on top 4 and then lose them again

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2013 14:19:46
regardlees to press reports spurs are in a very good position! they have money to burn! and are looking at lamela & eriksen to join as well as another centre half such as otamendi, alderweirald or chiriches! they have demanded a world record fee for the welshman! and they are asking for what madrid cannot do? a lump sum!, madrid are asking for instlments and spurs are saying no! bale, who the press would have you believe wants out. not the case! he would be equally happy to stay (new baby & partner wanting to stay in london), the pending arrival of coentrao has nothing to do with the bale possible departure, spaeking with my work colleague who is a spurs fan thinks the return of kaboul will would strengthen their team? so I think they may do well?

Agree0 Disagree0

Looking at the buys you would place Spurs before us and Arsenal for fourth place.
In fact before Man U, I think if Man U do not buy big this summer, they might not make top four
Still over two week to go for LFC, Arsenal and Man U to strengthen.
Looks like this might be the most competition EPL for some time

Agree0 Disagree0

You honestly think they are great signings? I think a lot of spending for spendings sake. If Bale goes they are screwed. End of. I'm not saying we are better or worse but there is a reason they don't finish top 4 and never win anything.

My take on that is they spend poorly and don't bring any youth through which is the heart beat of a team. Also they do not know how to win. They have no winners in the team. When the going gets tough the Spurs get running. Not a dig just reality

Agree0 Disagree0

They are only adding as they a losing a lot of midfield players: huddlestone, parker, dempsey etc and their attack is getting old: defoe and adebayor both over thirty. we are adding and not losing first team players(except carra)

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2013 09:46:01
Got a strong feeling we might sign michu who thinks he will be good for us

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Decent but is he an improvement on what we have now? I don't think so.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2013 09:53:42
he is off to Arsneal If suarez deal is off.
He is not what we wanted, We have Asaps.
we need pae on the flanks, with dribbling skills, technical players. sanchez, muriel, willian etc.

Agree0 Disagree0

I used to get feelings like that, but strong tablets soon cured them

Agree0 Disagree0

Rather we stay clear don't want to get stung again on price by Swansea who will no doubt be looking at around £20M+ I think for the price they would want there are better options out there.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2013 10:06:38
i honestly can't see it, why would he? they have a very good team, won a trophy and are in europe! so why leave?

Agree0 Disagree0

Probably turn out to be another 20 odd million mistake on a one season wonder.

Agree0 Disagree0

Really hope not believe he is a one season wonder like Carroll.

Agree0 Disagree0

Come on. I understand fully the price issue of Michu and I agree it would be too risky but he is no Fluke!

His manager was absolutely world class and I am sure knows a good player when he see's one. I understand his scouts see players but I am fairly sure he would have seen and admired this player many times, and for very good reason.

He is no one hit wonder and I also think the manager will go on to be one of the best in next 10 years

Excellent news for the latest LFC musical offering. The next version of the Anfield Wrap will be featuring our new signings Will-I-am and Shakira. On the footballing side we are hoping shakira brings along her boyfriend. Now that WOULD strengthen our back four.

Look out too for the Luis Suarez version of You Spin Me Right Round Baby.

Tip of the day:

Never trust a man who refers to himself in third person.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No sure we have taken a £35M "hit" at all. My understanding was that, for Carroll at least, we paid in cash, so actually we will have a cash benefit. In accounting terms, my understanding again is that players' transfer fees are depreciated over the term of their contract; Carroll was about halfway through his contract, so his "book value" will actually have been pretty close to his sale price.

Agree0 Disagree0

Carroll went for 15m more than his value at that time. Torres went for 20-25m more than his value at the time. Neither Liverpool nor Chelsea got their money's worth. Newcastle did very well out of it.

For all the people calling for us to sign players can we please have a reality check.
1. We are not in europe so it is difficult to get the right players .
2.We have tried to sign some players but it has not worked out.
3. Most important we have just taken a £34 mil hit to west ham for carroll & Downing, I think we should be cautious who we buy and get the right people at the right price, the club cannot afford losses like this so keep the faith and be patient

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Well said that man.

we can't go out and buy the Higuain's, Cavani's. clever buys that fit with the team is what it's about at the moment.

Agree0 Disagree0

If I could like/agree to this post I would, well said mate

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with OP.

Andy K

Agree0 Disagree0

I am all for a reality check but I also trust Rodgers and have supported him since the moment he arrived .

He has said clearly on a number of occasions that he will do everything he can to add quality to the squad before the window closes . That will do for me .

Agree0 Disagree0

Its a 25mil hit on those two players, not 34mil. Downing did not cost us 20m and we got from Carroll approximately 20m back.
Willian has a better option play

Willian
Siquira
Sahko

That is some football manager shizzle right there.

Coates, Skrtel and Suarez in exchange for Willian, Siquira and Sahko? I would take it personally. No idea if it is realistic, probably fanciful, but sounds like a plan for all of our direct needs. And I don't mean as a straight swap, to clarify.

Hi to everyone. Can I say what a great job y'all do on this site - not just the eds but everyone. My name is Alex. I live in Florida. In 'nutters beach'. I used to manage a soccer team in England when I was younger. We won lots of trophies. And I had some excellent players in my team. But I would like to say that I haven't seen anyone quite like the lads now playing at Liverpool. I mean you have guys of the quality of Jordan Henderson and Stewart downing. Jeeziz you'll go far. Anyway I'm off fer a scotch and a laugh at the beach here with with the man that took over from me - young David. Good luck to you all for the new season.

Where are these players that we supposed to be signing, the season starts Saturday and we are way short these players should have been in. What are the scouts actually doing I could have done better from my living room, we were prob 3 players short from last season and the players should have been boxed off by now, the way we are going and the slowness nobody will be left. The scouts and manager should have a, b, c options for the positions but middle of August nothing, prob end up with crumbs that's left, hope I'm wrong but we need to move swiftly or another bad campaign.

Lee stop being a tool. The season may start this weekend but the wjndow does not shut this weekend. Teams that may be interested in Suarez, for example, havnt bothered moving because they will wait right until the end of the window to test our resolve and try to get a deal done on the cheap, because he can't play until the end of august anyway.
This is a tactic a lot of clubs use and i'm sure Liverpool are no different trying to get deals done cheaply towards the end of the window. I much prefer moving early but it just doesn't always happen, that does not mean I slate our transfer activity before the window is even closed. let's wait until the window closes until we judge the clubs transfers.

It is not the scouts who sign players mate. They do their bit it is up to the manager and the negotiation team to get the players signed.

Anfield Andy.

Yeah, But were you the one who insisted, we need a proper preseason. and the players earlier they bought in would gel with each other?.
I don't care If the players are bought on 31 st night, But they shouldn't take 3-6 months to get settle in our system. that's total rubbish

Exactly mate, I laugh when someone says. we are working Hard behind the scenes?
jesus are they farming?. an 8 hours work in the field, do they actually sweat?
whats this hard work behind the scenes, Every club, would indentify their problems and positions to be fixed during the season, and we knew this prior to summer. they also would have an indication about the budgets set for the summer.
If you want a player, It just takes matter of days to get a reasult, If the player is coming or not.
It was real shame we took weeks to finalise the deal for HM, were we not knowing the tussle in the transfer (3rd oparty ownership, transfer release clause etc).
Now let's ake the willian. a 40 mill offer has been rejected as per eds.
we would then bid 32 mill, what a joke that would be?

Hard work behind the scenes constitutes a couple of phone calls and the odd fax. Then on the odd occasion Ian Ayre is called into action via his chopper to be told that he can't have a player on loan and to stop scrounging.

Agree0 Disagree0

Exactly mate these players should have well been identified and were going into the last couple of weeks still not sure, Suarez wants to play in a good side can we offer him that. Apparently squad players bought just waiting for first teAm players now to come in.

Agree0 Disagree0

I feel indifferent about Ian Ayre.

He's not great at transfer deals from looking at history.

I think he's in his role because of his working experience in Asia. He was chief exec of Total Sports Asia, amongst others.

He must have some great contacts to promote the Liverpool brand there.
