I purposely did not post anything after the Leceister game, because I wanted to be sure. And now I pretty much, am. Jurgen Klopp has put one hell of an attack and midfield together.

Firmino's not playing? We score and we win. Coutinho's not playing? We still score and we still win. And even if Sturridge is not scoring now, he is enough of a threat to bring others into play and score.

Everyone's already praised the others in the team for today's performance, so I won't repeat the same things. I noticed, though, that there's still debate about Lallana and Wijnaldum, and why they're starting. To me there can only be one reasonable answer, and that's workrate.

Both are pressing constantly, both are pressuring passes and both are putting the miles in. Did anyone notice much of Oscar, Kante and Matic (aside from his one moment of goal assist) with the ball today? Klopp clearly likes his strikers to defend high up, his midfielders to run, run, run and his defenders to attack once in a while (did you see that Matip run, wow! ) .

My one concern remains the defense. I think the Matip-Lovren pairing is the best we have at hand, but we've let in 8 goals in 5 games already. That's as high as some of the teams in the relegation zone. Time for some clean sheets, or change the chemistry in defense by bringing Karius in.

Believable5 Unbelievable1

16 Sep 2016 23:34:35
5 games maybe, but we've had lovren matip, matip Lucas, klavan and lovren. Give matip and lovren a few more together and they'll be fine! They've conceded 2 agaisnt Chelsea and Spurs, not the worst!

16 Sep 2016 23:39:37
I don't think there is any doubt in why Lallana is a starter! hahaa.

16 Sep 2016 23:45:06
Matip has only started since the Burton game, and we have conceded 3 goals in the 4 games he's played (3 in 3 league games), which is a massive improvement on the 5 conceded in 2 games before he started.
Obviously, this isn't all down to him, but it's a positive sign that the defence is improving.

17 Sep 2016 00:17:28
Carra is right, They look promising but need 15 games to build a proper relationship.

I think Mingolet causes panic which unsettles the whole defensive nature of the team.

17 Sep 2016 06:26:50
communication has improved especially with the midfield and defence. Matip's run did give me cause for concern as it should because I knew GW and Hendo had his back.

17 Sep 2016 09:12:37
Back to the original point, the attack is so good at the moment we have great back ups as well, imagine when Sturridge is scoring as well as we al know he can, he seems to be physically good but perhaps 5% missing sharpness and in his head holding back a little at the mo. Get him firing and all the others joining in and the ain't no reason we can push on an challenge this year, everybody saying its a perfect year as kloppo's tactics take a lot out the players over a season with Europe they will tire and faid but one game a week/ mix of youth in the cups could spell a big year.

16 Sep 2016 22:59:13
Adam Lallana cannot be a human being, he has the lungs of 2 Dirk Kuyts' and the legs of Mo Farah. He covered every blade of grass and chased down everything in blue that moved. He's improved massively this season, finally adding goals to his game and was absolutely magnificent today.

Believable8 Unbelievable0

16 Sep 2016 23:33:00
Didn't have the legs to run with Ivanovic for the goal conceded.

17 Sep 2016 01:03:22
He was pushed over after the tackle attempt and stumbled.

17 Sep 2016 06:29:26
He's human Big Al. You can'take expect perfection.

17 Sep 2016 22:28:58
And it was Matic.

16 Sep 2016 22:42:47
Just regarding Sturridge tonight, he just doesn't look fit, he hardly got out of 1st gear, just has not been the same since those injuries last season.

Believable6 Unbelievable4

16 Sep 2016 23:00:46
Reminds me of Torres. After so many injuries he's just not as fast as he was.

17 Sep 2016 00:18:38
When he came off he went down the tunnel. Is he injured?

17 Sep 2016 02:58:21
Goals are missing at the mo. Makes everything else seem like a problem.

16 Sep 2016 22:36:24
Wijnaldum man of the match apart from Hendo's goal.

Matip immense at the back alongside Lovren.

2-1 win against Chelsea and all this with an ineffectual Mane a quiet Lallana.

Believable4 Unbelievable6

16 Sep 2016 22:59:40
Can't agree there mate, Lallana quiet? GW mom?

16 Sep 2016 23:01:11
Thankfully someone else noticed how good wijnaldum was today. All 3 midfielders were class.

16 Sep 2016 23:04:16
But quiet Lallana. Really?

16 Sep 2016 23:49:59
Sorry didn't finish my original post. Yes Lallana was quiet compared to the way he has been playing of late.

But yeah Wijnaldum was immense, watch it back, he will only get better as the season goes on and I for one can't wait to see him progress.

And we beat these without our main player in Firmino and without Mane playing his best. Ynwa.

16 Sep 2016 23:09:13
Finally someone who appreciates what Wiji does. Thought I was on my own!

16 Sep 2016 22:33:36
Both champions of the last two years beaten. Shame we didn't beat the championship winners but may be a early lesson learned.
Reasons to be cheery: good squad with potential, team spirit, great stadium, planet full of believing fans, money if needed, Klopp. Loved how Klopp hugged every player with guinuine enthusiasm.
Enjoy the weekend.

Great performance overall. other than matip wasteful challenge for the goal but done good all game otherwise. but brilliant energy, link up play, possession. amazing 3pts away from home in London. buzzing lads. YNWA.

Believable5 Unbelievable2

16 Sep 2016 23:07:53
Have a second look. Right after Matip missed, Lallana came in with a slide too and missed the ball just like Matip. Why is everyone just blaming Matip?

17 Sep 2016 00:20:31
Henderson should have tracked back. Went to sleep.

17 Sep 2016 03:51:38
I knew someone would slate Hendo for something in spite of the monumental game he had. That definitely didn't take long. Dermot, Hendo was nowhere near the play and both Matip and Lallana dove into the tackle instead of standing their ground and blocking the space for the cross. Stop blaming Hendo for the things he didn't do because it's becoming stale and stupid.

{Ed001's Note - to be fair Hendo should have either tracked back or got one of his midfield partners to do so. It was a mistake by the trio as they all left him for each other to track. It was clear in that moment that the 3 of them are still learning to work together as a unit. Hopefully that will be sorted in time.}

16 Sep 2016 22:19:26
Great win and well done to the lads!

Is it just me or has something changed - for the first time in a long time, when we conceded that goal I didn't have that sense of dread that we were going to collapse. I was 100% confident we would see it through, if anything I fancied us for another goal, and Origi almost got it.

Yes we could have prevented their goal, but I wasn't too worried we would concede another - have to give credit to the defence and the whole team because their effort and getting stuck in is really paying dividends.

Things are on the up lads, a well deserved victory.

Believable12 Unbelievable2

16 Sep 2016 22:18:04
Nail biting finish, but apart from their goal and one Costa chance we looked comfortable enough, matip helps us defend set pieces better. Hendo what a goal. Wow. Solid performance from him, and gini was unspectacular but more reliable today. I think it is a hard role for lallana and gini as they are expected to do everything, but I'd like see can and coutinho there, good balance for me, and allows firmino and mane to play behind a striker, they are too good to drop one. Quick bit on Milner, it's so nice watching someone at left back get forward put in good crosses and not be useless going backwards. 7 points away to Arsenal Spurs and Chelsea is great but we need to pick up or performances need to get better against the burnleys if we want to really push for top 4!

Believable4 Unbelievable3

16 Sep 2016 22:46:04
I felt Gini and Lallana were joint mom. They were and have been immense. Great game tonight. Imagine the possibilities. And keep in mind one loss won't kill the season and we will lose another game or 2.

16 Sep 2016 23:36:48
Yes of course they won't, but we will lose some games to the big teams so will need to beat the ones down the bottom!

16 Sep 2016 22:17:25
Ok so it was only 2-1. But I suppose most of us would have took that before the match ;)

Believable9 Unbelievable1

16 Sep 2016 22:28:19
What do you mean ONLY 2-1. It was 3 points that is all that matters plus a very good performance.

16 Sep 2016 22:17:23
Matip looks tidy as hell on the ball bravo he was bad for the goal but other then that he was immense!

If anyone cares to highlight GW for me as a overall LFC player so far please do he seems the be out of sync at times.

Believable5 Unbelievable11

16 Sep 2016 22:29:46
I thought GW was really good today. Tidy in possession looked good under pressure also carried the ball a lot to turn defence in to attack, ran all day. him and hendo were brilliant.

16 Sep 2016 22:33:37
Yes dezy, it's easy to forget he's playing st times.

16 Sep 2016 22:39:52
So we have just beaten one of our contenders for a top 4 finish. The boys played superbly for most of the game, we scored 2 fantastic goals and we dug in 2nd half to see out the game but still you find the need to complain about Gini. For me he had his best game for us tonight. He picked up players well, closed down brilliantly and intercepted numerous passes. He gives us more power and strength in the middle of the park. If you watched the game properly and looked out for these things then you might appreciate these small details that make such a big difference to a game. How many games has he played? 4? 5? he's has played better with each game. Give the guy a chance!

16 Sep 2016 22:42:08
Goni is a class player, keeps the ball moving.

16 Sep 2016 22:23:16
I thought GW was brilliant today. Very efficient and hard working. He's not as good on the eye as others but he's done his work well.

16 Sep 2016 22:58:07
Anyone who tells me Wijnaldum was not effective tonight knows zip about football. He was superb. One misplaced pass and he was all over the pitch. Pace, power, skill. He will only get better too. Great performance by the lads and lots to look forward to!

16 Sep 2016 22:17:19
Great to see Henderson and Milners post match celebrations together, magic moment, get in there!

16 Sep 2016 22:31:45

Brilliant win, brilliant performance led by our brilliant Captain Hendo. who scored a brilliant goal

Well done lads. 😀👍🏼.

16 Sep 2016 22:06:27
What a great way to start the weekend. Great win that will do us a world of good. let's just hope we can consolidate with a win aginst Hull. Brilliant.

16 Sep 2016 22:01:30
I have critisised Henderson and lallana in the past, but tonight I thought they were both immense. Great result and now all of a sudden our start looks very very good. Also great to see ejaria on the bench he's a real talent.

Believable7 Unbelievable0

16 Sep 2016 22:30:34
I have done as well, both were awesome tonight.

16 Sep 2016 22:00:09
Brilliant first half nervy second once they scored. First half great going forward without mane or Coutinho being anywhere near their best offensively, just shows we have plenty of attacking options up front and in midfield. Matip very good apart from going to ground too early when closing down matic forctheir goal, hard to pick mom, Lovren, Matip, Lallana, Milner, Henderson, I could go on, let's just say great team performance. Well done reds.

16 Sep 2016 21:57:31
Watching Klopp after the match and the rest of the players it would seem not only is there a team spirit but a belief they can win as well. I understand the need to sometimes point out the wrongs and if done in a constructive way all is good. It would seem we are heading towards some fun times ahead. Brilliant performance and what a goal for the captain.

Believable14 Unbelievable1

16 Sep 2016 21:56:43
Jordan Henderson Silenced his critics with that long-range beauty. Quality player who doesn't get the respect he deserves. I'm sure he will build on this important goal and put the Henderson is quality or crap debate to bed for good.

Him and Lallana were superb tonight, absolutely everywhere. Thought winij had his best game for us too.

16 Sep 2016 21:56:38
Well gentlemen, 10 points from Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicster. Not bad chaps 😎.

Believable16 Unbelievable2

16 Sep 2016 22:23:26
Ironically we do well against the good and bad against the lower teams

If ya can't get up for those 4 there's something wrong but on the other hand Hull might be harder (shouldn't be but has in recent years)

17 Sep 2016 06:44:08
We have everything to prove against teams like Chelsea, in contrast Hull will be looking to exceed expectations against us. It's a mini test after the disappointment of Burnley.
But hey, so pleased with last night's result. Missed the game due to travel, can't wait to catch up with it.

16 Sep 2016 21:56:06
Great 3 points, superb 1st half performance, just would like us not to sit back so much in the 2nd and invite teams to come at us.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

16 Sep 2016 21:54:25
Can we play in london every week? 3 away games against tottenham arsenal and chelsea and 7 points? Amazing this is going to be a great season!

16 Sep 2016 20:43:38
Someone said they hoped Hendo would prove them wrong. Was that enough proof?

Believable17 Unbelievable0

16 Sep 2016 20:56:00
He has been excelent all around. But he can not shoot ha ha.

16 Sep 2016 20:59:11
I had a tenner on him to score always believed in the lad.

16 Sep 2016 21:56:38
great goal and i think the best first half i have seen from us. Great win. My only tiny suggestion (not that its worth much) would be when we start to look in trouble Grujic for me would perhaps be a great one to bring on. Well done Reds. So happy!

Ed01 - what was your take? Best performance this year or not? I thought lallana was also very good.

16 Sep 2016 20:19:58
Dejan Lovren!

Former villain turned hero. Well, he turned hero after Dortmund, but this is awesome.

Most significant event at game so far is Moreno's hair. What's he thinking? Messi goes blond, and looks bad btw, and now Moreno follows suit.

I am a long time reader but very occasional poster. Love all the banter, especially Ron, Waro and Harry :)
LKY brings in the funny element with his outrageous posts quite often as well.
Special mention of course to the eds, especially ed001 who invests time, knowledge, and a very strong point of view (which I mostly agree with but not always) .
We tend to do well against the big teams, so hope we can unravel Conte's Chelsea. My big fear is that they park the bus today, which is why I hope Coutinho plays to bring in that spark of brilliance.

All the best to the team today. Let's paint London red!
Onwards and upwards. YNWA.

Believable3 Unbelievable2

16 Sep 2016 18:01:34
I personally wouldn't change it in an attacking sense, we won 4-1 against the current champs. I would be pissed if I was dropped after that.
However long term I would move coutinho in for GW, get him central where he can do damage.

16 Sep 2016 18:49:16
Firmino is carrying a knock and wouldn't start. Terrible news.

16 Sep 2016 18:50:05
Good lad w0rdsmith, another believer 😎

We are going to SMASH Chelsea tonight, I'm 100% confident. It's going to be an awesome atmosphere at the game. The away fans are in for a treat, but they bloomin deserve it!
I just love the way Kloppo is setting us up. There is no compromise with this team, we are just going to go out, hell for leather and blow teams away. We will keep trying to score if we're 5-0 up. This is what football is all about, goals, excitement, unpredictability. He's really bringing the feel good factor back and some teams this season will get battered.
We'll concede a lot this season, but we'll have thrilling games, lots of goals and lots of success. By Christmas every team will be petrified of our attacking intent.

16 Sep 2016 19:05:16
You should bottle whatever it is you've got Ron 😎.

16 Sep 2016 19:07:02
We'll win 3-1 tonight. Couts for Firmino is not a bad replacement 😁
Glad Sturridge kept his place although I think he'd have been sacrificed had Firmino been fit. Come on, let's have it!

16 Sep 2016 19:10:12
Hey Ron got to say I hope you are right but totally disagree. Klopp only plays one way and teams should be able to come up with a plan to stop this style of play.
I think we will Finnish between 8th and 13th this season.

{Ed001's Note - Klopp does not play only one way, utter nonsense.}

16 Sep 2016 19:22:58
You definitely live upto your name 8th to 13th ppffff.

16 Sep 2016 19:29:42
not even negative united fans would have us 8th-13th.

16 Sep 2016 19:55:58
Come on negativeredwalter! What's the point in watching us this season if you've already got us doomed to failure? It's early doors. Up the Reds.

16 Sep 2016 22:34:50
I like to be proved wrong and I am desperate for lfc to have success. Just not 100% sure this will be our season personally think next year bigger year with top 4 a definite.

16 Sep 2016 15:45:20
We have created a bad pattern that I hope ends tonight,
Whenever we score big against a team we either lose or draw the next match.
Mainz loss after barce 4:0 win,
Burnley loss after arsenal 4:3 win,
Spurs draw after Burton 5:0 win.
We just won 4:1 against leicester so tonight needs to be nothing other than a win or else we are continuing that hit and miss pattern.

Believable4 Unbelievable8

16 Sep 2016 15:43:02
Phil Thompson in the Echo today saying he would love to have Diego Costa on our team. I said this about six months ago on here and got a torrent of abuse, "how could a Liverpool fan think that etc. " well I feel justified today!
Bring on the abuse.

Believable4 Unbelievable9

16 Sep 2016 15:59:32
No doubt he's a great player . he's just a massive tool!

{Ed001's Note - why is it justified now Thommo has said it anyway?}

16 Sep 2016 16:33:53
Thommo saying it does the opposite of proving you correct! This is the guy who told us Sanchez was nailed on to sign!

16 Sep 2016 17:12:56
I saw a few Liverpool fans choosing Costa or Hazard as the player they would take from Chelsea. I can't see why everyone's answer wouldn't be Kante. Regardless of how many CM's we have, he is the best in the holding position in the league by a mile.

16 Sep 2016 17:28:30
I would take Kante over any of Chelsea`s other players.

16 Sep 2016 17:29:53
The same Thompson who helped get rid of fowler? Good drivers Don't always make good mechanics.

16 Sep 2016 17:45:02
MK how is that relevant?

16 Sep 2016 18:36:35
I wouldn't really use Thompson as any kind of validation as his opinion has been let's say suspect over the years. A nation might vote in donald trump into presidency in a few months time, however it does not mean their decision would have been a good one. So by voting in a massive tool would that validate that he is right for the job or that a lot of people had a suspect opinion or notion? Just a poser.

16 Sep 2016 18:54:51
I remember we wanted him to replace Suarez and approached him. Everyone thought it would be a great signing.
He's a good player, he's no Suarez but he's dangerous.
He has an edge which opposition fans like to hate him for, that's natural, but there's no denying when he's up for it he's a dangerous player.

16 Sep 2016 19:37:00
The same Phil Thompson who allegedly wasn't convinced that Ronaldo was worth half a million signing on fee, regardless of that is 100% correct or not I don't rate Thompson as a coach or judge of player.

16 Sep 2016 20:47:10
Hazard.

16 Sep 2016 14:04:41
I hope we start well tonight and attack them from the get go. Our attacking players are capable of destroying Chelsea. We're also capable of conceding early goals if there's a lack of concentration and we aren't mentally ready especially regarding Costa and hazard.
My biggest concern is midfield when we don't have the ball. Henderson cannot be isolated. He has to be helped In the middle of the park.
Milner and especially Clyne need to positionallly aware. Clyne can't be half way up the field when Chelsea are attacking especially if it turns into an open game.

Just been asked this cracker of a question:

Which current active player has scored in the: Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A?

Believable4 Unbelievable2

16 Sep 2016 12:59:17
Kevin-Prince Boateng.

And I didn't google it either.

Although I admit did haev to wiki to make sure he has played in la liga which he has this year. :)

16 Sep 2016 13:09:40
Kp boateng?

16 Sep 2016 13:12:27
Obafemi martins?

16 Sep 2016 13:17:40
I would have guessed at coutinho but don't think he played in Germany.

16 Sep 2016 13:23:57
Pierre Womé.

16 Sep 2016 13:27:26
Shaqiri?

16 Sep 2016 13:42:11
Andre Voronin.

16 Sep 2016 13:49:28
Unfortunately Lord Bendtner is only one league off, but he obviously dropped down to the Championship so as to not outshine Lio or Cristiano #Leg end.

16 Sep 2016 13:55:44
KP Boateng and Obafemi Martins are both correct

Pierre Wome was a cracking shout but unfortunately Wikipedia is lying, he never scored for Espanyol.

16 Sep 2016 14:07:29
Didn't even think of martins to be honest.

Great question though.

16 Sep 2016 14:58:19
Here's another 1. What former liverpool player has scored in the Merseyside, Munich, Milan, Manchester and London derby.

16 Sep 2016 15:50:37
Wome scored from a deflected free kick against Real Sociedad ;)

16 Sep 2016 15:52:59
Christian Ziege.

16 Sep 2016 17:30:03
Kevin Pince Boateng.

16 Sep 2016 19:44:28
Andre Voronin.

16 Sep 2016 22:15:06
Ye ziege.

16 Sep 2016 23:35:05
I'm sure Wome scored whilst playing for Espanyol in the Primera Division (aka La Liga) as he scored with a deflected free kick against Real Sociedad.

Hi Ed1 what's your thoughts on how Mane is fitting in at liverpool? i know you had reservations about his attitude before, has he decided to finally knuckle down etc? as he seems to be performing on the pitch and if he continues the way he is i'd say we got a bargain!

Believable2 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - too early to tell yet, he was excellent for Saints at first, then began to pick and choose games. The hope is that the competition for places at Liverpool will ensure he doesn't take it easy once he has his feet under the table. So far so good though.}

16 Sep 2016 10:48:23
cool yeah i think he's started really well, hopefully klopp can keep him on the straight and narrow too, seems he's pretty ruthless when he has to be which is nice to see!

{Ed001's Note - we do still need some competition for him, hopefully someone will come through from the youth team to push him for the spot.}

16 Sep 2016 13:32:18
Edd001 mane is playing at a level that would require a real top player to be pushing him. I can't imagine such a player sitting on the bench and ibes now elsewhere . There's noone from the youth set up ready. I think manes attitude more than competition will ensure this level of performance continues. We have origi etc who can come in if he's injured and change formation. Though I still would like origi to come in regardless. Thankfully it's a great dilemma to have with our front players especially firminho. playing soo well.

{Ed001's Note - you are missing the point, you don't need someone to push him when he is playing well. You just need an option who can come in if his level drops.}

16 Sep 2016 14:01:40
Original can push him if klopp decide to play 2 up. Or Ojo.

16 Sep 2016 14:03:42
Ojo could maybe be that player, Ed.

16 Sep 2016 14:38:32
I could judge him right away. A winger with pace, technique and goals. When did even have one of that kind? Liverpool need one more Mane.

16 Sep 2016 14:42:27
Ed wouldn't ojo be the likely candidate for that role provided he keeps developing.

{Ed001's Note - right now he would be.}

16 Sep 2016 15:49:50
If he starts to fall of I could see Firmino playing out wide and Sturridge or Origi through the middle but I personally don't think that will be required (apart from the inevitable blips in form every player will have)

16 Sep 2016 17:32:35
And to that point of mane picking his games, he often picked games vs Chelsea to play well and he has destroyed them in all the games he played against them Hopefully, that will be the case today.

I can't remember who asked for a match preview, but it is up on the teams page now. Not sure if that was what you wanted or not though? So feel free to let me know if that was the kind of thing you are looking for or, if not, what changes you would like me to make. I might not make the changes like, but still it is nice to get other viewpoints to work with.

Lovely article ED1!

{Ed001's Note - cheers mate. It was a bit rushed like, but that is probably a good thing or I would not know when to stop.}

16 Sep 2016 11:47:39
Great read Ed001!
I appreciate you are a busy man having to run the site, but if this could become a regular feature, I believe it would be a great addition to the site.

I still miss the podcasts and hope you and Mr Baller can get something sorted.

{Ed001's Note - if people like it then I will try and make it a regular feature.}

16 Sep 2016 12:16:58
That is a nice preview with in-depth tactical view of the opposition and weaknesses. that is just exactly what i was asking for. thanks for your time. wish you can do it for all games.

{Ed001's Note - cheers mate, I will try and get one done for each game.}

16 Sep 2016 13:51:35
That was rushed? Ed1 you mind if I contact you a day before my diss is due and you can rush on that and get me top marks? Pretty please?

{Ed001's Note - if it is on footie, you would be more than welcome!}

16 Sep 2016 15:43:05

Nice article, have to agree with the conclusion. Really glad Spurs haven't utilised this window as they could have.
