Use our rumours form to send us liverpool transfer rumours.

17 Aug 2016 23:15:04
I'd like to get something off my chest if I may, why do our players come out with stupid ridiculous unnecessary comments?
Latest one I've read in the echo is along the lines of Coutinho isn't far from being mentioned in the same breath as messi or ronaldo. What's the point of making comments like that?
How about the player making these comments concentrates on getting his game up coutinhos standard instead of these types of comments.
It's very tiring hearing our players say what they're going to do but then doing nothing. Shut up talking and just do it!
Thank you, rant over lol.

17 Aug 2016 23:31:01
Oh god, it's starting. Fans completely over-reacting to generic sound bites from a Liverpool player. Looks like Hendo's next in line for the 'this player is awful' spotlight.

17 Aug 2016 23:36:21
They're pointless sound bites is the issue.

18 Aug 2016 00:03:14
So what is our Captian meant to say when asked about the best player in our squad? "He may think he's good but I'm better" imagine the comments then!

18 Aug 2016 00:13:33
My rule: always ignore what managers and players 'say' to the press 😎.

18 Aug 2016 00:34:52
He has media responsibilities like every Liverpool player, he's going to be asked about his team Mates, would you have preferred it if he'd said 'Coutinho? He's alright but he's hardly world class is he'?

18 Aug 2016 03:39:40
Hendo should try something along the lines of "for any scouts that are listening, I just want to let you know that Coutinho is crap". Would get a laugh and avoid hype.

18 Aug 2016 06:33:21
No no. U got the wrong guy. Likely the question is framed like this or similr- Do you think Coutinho has the potential to reach level of messi or Ronaldo?

Then of course Hendo got sucked in and say good things about his team mate. Next moment u know the ridiculous headlines. C'mon that's british journalist for u. Seems u guys got hoodwink again and again.

18 Aug 2016 07:34:12
Ron, you nearly got it right, I say always ignore the press and their spin!

18 Aug 2016 08:20:01
O gosh, player says something nice about his talented teammate, somebody call the cops.

18 Aug 2016 08:38:23
I think what the OP was getting at is, maybe players should play down there chances and the abilities of themselves and others, because it raises expectations of some fans while gives the press ammunition to have a pop at us at a later date should things go pear shaped.

If your asked a question like the one asked to henderson then a simple " couthinho is a top class player and were lucky to have him " would have sufficed instead of pigeon holing players or making unrealistic comparisons which heap more pressure on the player and the team.

18 Aug 2016 12:26:11
Way too much over reaction to what is a nothing comment. They play, train, spend time together every day - do you honestly think Coutinho goes home to read the Echo to find out what Hendo thinks of him?

Come on now this is just stupid: players have obligations to speak to the press - sometimes they say things that are a little exaggerated, or incorrect - but they do it because they have to and that's it. Reading into these sorts of comments is profoundly stupid.

18 Aug 2016 14:45:40
A nothing comment that the OP has allowed himself to get wound up for no reason over. Hendo is trying to motivate his team mate to perform and give him confidence. Players and managers do that all the time so no problem there. If you don`t understand that them there`s not much that can be done.

18 Aug 2016 07:51:50
Yes Bazaaa that's why I put the ' ' around the word 'say'.
It's usually not what has been said, just what's been reported.

17 Aug 2016 22:13:29
Henderson to left back with Can/ Grujic/ GW playing midfield?

Believable2 Unbelievable17

17 Aug 2016 22:20:40
Oh no I hate it playing there please please please I'm begging ya Istanbul don't let Jurgen see this I can't go back there, it's awful anywhere but there please or I might have to up my dosage to 6 mg per day.

17 Aug 2016 22:25:59
Aww poor hendo haha.

18 Aug 2016 08:21:03
Would rather have Can there as he has past experience of playing there.

17 Aug 2016 21:48:12
I wish Henderson would stop talking about Coutinho like that to the media, unecessary expectation being placed on him.

Believable5 Unbelievable15

17 Aug 2016 22:12:07
oh come on lad I was only trying to boost Phil's (Phillipe Coutinho or Philippe Coutinho who made his Brazil debut in 2010, the same year The Chadian Civil War ended) confidence, he really is a maestro and I just thought that all media sources but one deserved to know as much.

I'm sorry if I placed any unnecessary pressure on the 24-year-old thunderbolt, really I am, please, pretty please with a glazed cherry on top forgive me, I love him with all my heart and would never try to make the boy blue.

It seems I can't do anything right in the eyes of the majority of the fans god I wish there was some way I could be loved because it's just making me sad as a tow truck.

Sorry, sorry I'm rambling but I need to take my daily dosage of Zimelidine.

17 Aug 2016 22:22:57
So it's alright for neymer and 2 other players saying things but one are players who knews how good and we need him this season to step up not to make the lad feel good about himself.

17 Aug 2016 19:40:36
Eds001 can I ask please what you think we can achieve this season in terms of league position? Also who are you expecting big things from in terms of players?

Thanks in advance.

Believable4 Unbelievable3

{Ed001's Note - I expect there to be a major scrap for the top 6 places, I also expect (hope?) for us to be top four, with some kind of title challenge.

I think Grujic will be the one, from the new boys, and Coutinho, that stand out.}

17 Aug 2016 20:00:05
Personally I think there's 3 main contenders this season and after that at the end of the season there will be a 6-10 pt gap.

Man city
Chelsea
Liverpool

Not in that order as I think it's too close to call, Utd will falter they have a non existent midfield and time will show that and I don't think Spurs have enough backup on the subs/ reserves end of things to push like they did last season. As for Arsnel they don't have the depth so I'm very fearful for them to even manage top 4.

My surprise tip for the 4th spot this season would be West Ham.

Just my personal view I'm sure many will disagree.

{Ed001's Note - West Ham? They are in disarray, they will be this season's Chelsea and struggle badly.}

17 Aug 2016 20:07:14
United will do well not in a pretty fashion but they will pick up points.

17 Aug 2016 20:30:17
Still think people re writing off Spurs too early. I can't see a better trio in the league than Eriksen, Alli and Lamela. Except maybe Mane, Coutinho and Firmino of course ;)

17 Aug 2016 20:37:32
I think Man City are going to struggle too.
I don't see why they're everyone's favourite.
I think it's going to be similar to last year.
There'll be loads of shocks.
It's whoever is involved in the least will win.
None of the top teams can defend.

17 Aug 2016 20:38:42
My surprise team would be Everton . But I do think we can challenge for the leauge if are players can turn up each weak and play like they can.

17 Aug 2016 20:47:22
Ed001 thanks very much, at last someone who agrees with me regarding Grujic. I've said on numerous occasions that Grujic has it all in his locker to really stand out and have been told he's either too young or he needs time to adapt or he won't get enough game time. Personally I think he will get plenty of game time to prove himself and I think he has the talent and the youthfull confidence, almost arrogant in his self belief to really stand out.

{Ed001's Note - he has to get game time or he will lose his work permit. Having spoken to a few people about him recently, he has been highlighted as a top talent that we are lucky to have. So I am trusting in their opinions, as much as my own.}

17 Aug 2016 20:56:44
Haha Utd have a non existent midfield? They've just spent 100m on Pogba. Plus they have Mhkytarian, Mata, Schneiderlen, Lingaard, Herrera, with Carrick to come back too. They will be challenging no doubt for me. I think it's between them and City with ourselves, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs scrapping for 3rd and 4th.

I rate Billic as a manager so I think they may do okay again. The squad needs improving however.

17 Aug 2016 20:59:03
Yeah Grujic looks quality.
I was sat right in line with his header against Barcelona.
Awesome goal.

17 Aug 2016 21:15:35
Can't see us making a decent title challenge without a decent left back, our defence looks shaky and other teams will always think they can nick something from us down that flank, and half the time they will.
I can see us making top 4 though.

17 Aug 2016 21:35:43
One horse race this year, no challengers only champions! 😎.

17 Aug 2016 22:29:27
Whats so bad at the hammers edd1?Bilic looks like he knows what he's doing . I know its a bit off topic.

{Ed001's Note - their best winger playing right back, even though he bought a right back, costing them badly. The desperate need for full backs but instead buying attacking midfielders (sounds familiar!) and no striker arriving. Bilic got away with it last season, now he has to sort out a player revolt.}

17 Aug 2016 22:45:32
Antonio is good but not better than payet for them.

They started like we did on the weekend last season, all these new players but not ryhtem. Wont be ling before there sussed out.

Bought a lot of good players no great ones to elevate them like payet did.

Fancy mouthing off about a 25 mil striker and then loaning one.

They have bought all similar players. They needed to be buying one or two great players.

{Ed001's Note - Payet is not a winger, he plays best centrally.}

17 Aug 2016 22:49:07
Thanks for the quick response better than the AA. lol.

{Ed001's Note - hahaha you are welcome, just don't ask me to fix your car!}

18 Aug 2016 02:48:03
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Leicester, they're certainly not my pick even for top six. I'm curious as to how people think they're season will go.

18 Aug 2016 04:09:12
Ed001

I wasn't aware there's issues within West ham like you mentioned hence why I mentioned them. going on their performance last year and in fairness having a decent coach in Bilic so I suppose I'll withdraw that one and maybe just maybe throw Everton in there instead on the back of what Koeman has done elsewhere in the past, he seems to really get the best from very average players. But as for Leicester I really can't see them finishing any higher than 6th at the very most and having a battle with Everton Spurs and Westhampnett for the respective positions.

I really do think though it's too early for Manchester city to get things totally right this season but they will be there or there aboutshould as will Chelsea and Liverpool in my opinion, but and this isn't my heart talking, but I really think our squad has immense sept in 99% of the pitch this season and between that and concentrating and commuting I think we could surprise a lot of teams this season.

OK some day we gave away 3 soft goals against arsenal but it's the 1st game of the season and some have not gelled yet for example wijnaldum playing in a position he is not used to but the potential is there and if klopp can make it all click the sky's the limit this season.

Jeez I think I'm sounding like Ron now

Pmsl.

{Ed001's Note - is Bilic a decent coach? There is little evidence of that prior to joining West Ham. Same with Koeman, what he did with Southampton was completely out of character for him. Both are very similar to LVG's past. Both had success based on what was given to them by others, using a set up and system not of their creation. Koeman will need time to implement his way on the club, but he is not the important man there anyway, Steve Walsh is the one who will make the difference. Bilic I am totally unconvinced by, his management is bizarre and it always seems to go to pieces after initial success.}

18 Aug 2016 04:25:46
I get yours points ed001 so can I ask, if you had to pick potential winner of the league this season going on potential within squads management etc between all clubs mentioned, who would you say has the best chance if taking the title this year, I know you said it will be tight for the top 6 places but out of them all who do you think can go all the way?
I know it's very early days but would be nice to get your opinion and I won't ask you to wear undies if your pick comes out on top.

Promise

😂😂.

{Ed001's Note - probably City, though it is still too early to pick as there is a lot of transfer business to be done.}

18 Aug 2016 04:36:29
So a mf of pogba hererra schneiderlin carrick and felliani is non existent, what next de gea is an average keeper not fit to lace the great mignolet's boots. I suppose the greatest mf the world has ever seen grujic or is it henderson will show us how average and over rated pogba is.

18 Aug 2016 20:21:27
Bilic might not be a top manager but he's certainly a top pundit.

17 Aug 2016 19:40:36

18 Aug 2016 04:10:12
Also agree with ed001 Grujic will be a star performer this season along with Stewart, couthino, mane and Klavan.

17 Aug 2016 19:24:35
S Sports saying according to their sources it's just a muscle injury and not a dislocation for Mane. Might not be too bad fingers crossed.

Believable9 Unbelievable5

18 Aug 2016 12:30:14
Klopp has confirmed this in todays news conference so that's a plus.

17 Aug 2016 19:24:31
Going to Burnley on Sat, any tips for away pubs guys?

Believable3 Unbelievable4

17 Aug 2016 20:59:49
The Cricket Club or The Queen Vic near the ground for away fans according to Burnley web site.

17 Aug 2016 22:46:19
Cheers mate.

17 Aug 2016 19:20:52
Mane a doubt for Burnley nothing beyond, good news guys.

Believable6 Unbelievable4

17 Aug 2016 18:32:51
Mane out for 4 months. Now we definitely need a LB. :P.

Believable0 Unbelievable17

17 Aug 2016 19:25:10
No he's not, he's going to miss the Burnley game that's all.

17 Aug 2016 20:00:45
There's plenty of cover available so I wouldn't really worry.

18 Aug 2016 02:54:02
I think Gini should take Mane's place for the Burnley game. He'd be able to have a bigger impact on the game, from the Arsenal game it looks as if he prefers to play more attacking, he gets into the box any opportunity he can.

17 Aug 2016 18:11:45
According to james pearce mane broken his collar bone 4-6 months out at best.

Gutted.

Believable0 Unbelievable18

17 Aug 2016 18:25:13
Oh god, no! He's been dynamite.

17 Aug 2016 18:26:45
It's a false account mate. Not the real James Pearce. Probably some Manc or Arsenal fan trying to cause distress.

17 Aug 2016 18:39:12
No he hasn't and i can't see a player been allowed to drive home with a broken collar bone. How about waiting for something offical before you start talking rubbish.

17 Aug 2016 18:44:39
Oh dear if true. That long out really?

17 Aug 2016 18:48:38
"Gutted" doesn't cover it.

We have plenty of options, but Mane has that extra bit in terms of pace and the ability to run at people all day that Couts, Lallana, Firmino etc. don't have, and I was really looking forward to seeing him settle in and deliver on his ability consistently.

We need Sturridge to have a good run in terms of fitness for this not to hurt a lot, imo.

17 Aug 2016 18:49:51
Mango, I hope to god that your right .

17 Aug 2016 18:53:09
Ahh nice one Mango.

17 Aug 2016 18:55:09
He's down with a shoulder injury on Fantasy League, so the injury is real but perhaps not the extent.

17 Aug 2016 20:06:13
Twitter is bad enough, but fake Twitter accounts are pretty poor sources by definition. Takes about 5 seconds to thumb through Pearce's tweets and see he said no such thing.

17 Aug 2016 20:11:14
He'll miss one game James Pearce that tweeted that has 40 followers it's a fake account. It's confirmed a muscle injury nothing serious.

17 Aug 2016 17:43:06
Ed 001, Sky Sports saying that Joe Hart will either move to us or Everton. Er, no thanks overrated in my humble opinion.

Believable2 Unbelievable7

{Ed001's Note - let me guess, are they offering odds on it through Slybet?}

17 Aug 2016 17:47:09
Indeed they are Ed 001! Hart can stay away!

{Ed001's Note - amazing how all these rumours come connected with betting odds.}

17 Aug 2016 18:18:40
So betting against hart to Liverpool is a £ cert? Ha.

17 Aug 2016 22:42:30
I really don't know how they get away with it in such a highly regulated industry, surely it's effectively insider trading I. E. Releasing information to affect the market.

17 Aug 2016 17:21:56
Ed001, do you think we are finished with incomings for this window? Thanks!

Believable2 Unbelievable6

{Ed001's Note - probably yes.}

17 Aug 2016 19:23:42
Ed1 are you happy mate, I know a left back would of been nice but as you say time and again best to keep the money on someone Klopp wants.

{Ed001's Note - I am happy to have Klopp as manager, but we did really need a left back and the one he wanted was available and keen to join us. So I am disappointed in the club for failing him. Still, I do think Klopp is good enough to see us through.}

18 Aug 2016 01:00:57
Thanks for the reply Ed. I'm still holding out hope that Klopp has someone in mind to bring in before the window closes. But I have faith in Klopp whatever he decides. Maybe he sees something in Moreno that a lot of us fail to see?

{Ed001's Note - he wants to replace him, so clearly not.}

18 Aug 2016 07:12:22
Who did Klopp want?

{Ed001's Note - have you been asleep for the last few months?? Chilwell.}

18 Aug 2016 12:33:06
LoL Ed. I knew about Chilwell. But that chapter closed some time back. Thought there was another one.

17 Aug 2016 17:20:18
Hi lads, rumours of official bid/ bids made for Gary Medel. Any truth at all in these?

Thanks.

Believable0 Unbelievable6

{Ed002's Note - RTP.}

17 Aug 2016 16:34:50
One for Ed01. Several extracts from Torres recent book doing the rounds with him quoting that Liverpool made him out to be a traitor when he left for Chelsea.

Just curious how if you know the real motivation behind the move?

He is quoted at saying the club showed a lack of ambition in future signings, but surely signing suarez was a promising sign?

I assume there was more Going on?

Believable1 Unbelievable4

{Ed001's Note - Suarez was signed with the money from Torres, he would never have joined if Torres had stayed. There were issues behind the scenes, with a few fallings out as Torres was not one for taking part in team bonding sessions and that caused friction between him and Gerrard. He was not happy.}

17 Aug 2016 17:09:43
I'm pretty sure Suarez was on his way well before Torres decided to, leave? Andy Carrol was signed with the Torres money? As for his relationship with Gerrard, I thought those problems were early on and both Torres and Gerrard said they were quite close before he left. Obviously Ed01, you'll know a lot more than me about this.

17 Aug 2016 17:13:28
I always liked to look at it as we got Andy Carroll + £15m for Torres in that deal. made much more sense in that context.

17 Aug 2016 17:34:20
Eds reds how close were we to bankruptcy before the takeover and tge new owners wanted to build a team from youth and so Torres frlt betrayed that the owners wanted build an empire to last years. If i'm right they bought the club in october 2011 torres left 3 months later didn't give them a chance and to be fair suarez is a better player not to take away Torres first season but don't slap the club again.

{Ed002's Note - The club were not going to go bankrupt.}

17 Aug 2016 17:37:28
I did some filming with Torres about a month after he left Anfield.
I told him that I was a LIverpool fan and he said
"So am I".

17 Aug 2016 17:47:15
I heard Torres preferred to be at home, with family, over the team bonding exercises. He was a fairly good chap, better than Gerrard, in terms of attitude.

17 Aug 2016 18:26:27
Muscat - I like to look at it as : Torres + Babel for Carroll and Suarez. 😎.

17 Aug 2016 18:51:20
Can't deny I'm glad his Chelsea move was a failure. Hope he likes all the medals that Drogba won for him.
Great player, but no Suarez.

17 Aug 2016 19:19:00
Wow, I always thought he and Gerrard had a great relationship.

17 Aug 2016 19:35:58
Ed1 do you think players should be forced to go to these team bonding sessions which let's be frank now probably involve getting absolutely drunk given the Drinking culture over here especially with a local lad at the top? I doubt they were falling into each other's arms blind folded!

{Ed001's Note - you are spot on, they were about drinking and Torres wanted to be at home with his family instead. No one should be forced to go on them, unless it an event set up by the club itself. Personally I would prefer the players to be resting and recovering ready for the next game, rather than going out on the lash. They have plenty of time to do that when they retire or in the off season.}

17 Aug 2016 19:35:58

18 Aug 2016 06:51:52
Watch Torres- all the goals on LFCTV. You can almost pick the moment he thought he was bigger than the club. The goals reel goes from 4-6 a month, to 1 a month, to 1 every 4 months. But we did stick by him up until he broke our hearts.

{Ed001's Note - that is not true, he did get a sulk on, but that was caused by a lot of factors, including injury problems and poor treatment by the club. It was not all down to him, in fact Gerrard and Carragher can take as much of the blame as he can, sadly.}

17 Aug 2016 16:30:25
Any truth in the rumour we are in for mustafi with Alberto thrown into the deal?

Believable3 Unbelievable7

17 Aug 2016 16:45:28
James Pearce has said that the Mustafi rumour isn't true.

He's also said that Medel rumours should be put "in the same rumour mill bin" as Mustafi. Sorry Ed01.

17 Aug 2016 16:52:27
I can't believe we are not actually going for a left back anymore.

17 Aug 2016 16:07:50
Seen online Mane is bk at training ground strapped up! Hope its not too bad.

Believable4 Unbelievable1

17 Aug 2016 18:04:22
He was pictured driving out of the hospital and signing autographs. Good to see he's okay and good to see he's stopping for the fans.

17 Aug 2016 15:07:18
Apparently Mane has had to go for a scan on his shoulder after being involved in a collision in training. Hope he's okay!

17 Aug 2016 15:33:12
Is right hoping precaution!

17 Aug 2016 15:39:02
2 weeks rest I am told.

17 Aug 2016 15:50:16
When will this end! Out for a month!

17 Aug 2016 16:00:36
Game of thrones. How do you no that?

17 Aug 2016 16:04:33
Whilst the injury is a blow, I think it's pretty good that even with the likes of Mane and Sturridge out injured, we still have the depth to put out an excellent front 4. Origi, Firminho, Coutinho and Lallana is pretty decent. A good squad in the attacking-half of the side. A left-back and defensive-minded midfielder and we'll be looking a lot better defensively too. Though I'm happy to keep Lucas for the immediate future if the right Def Mid isn't available atm.

17 Aug 2016 17:00:20
We could play Milner out wide, and keep Moreno at Left Back . okay, it was just a passing thought .

17 Aug 2016 16:15:39
LFC,

A friend of mine passed this info. I am not 100% sure. He returned to the training ground strapped up.

17 Aug 2016 14:55:34
Any news on mane?

Believable0 Unbelievable4

17 Aug 2016 15:09:24
I hope it comes back clear he's going to be big for us this season.

17 Aug 2016 15:20:17
Seriously hope its just a precaution and he is fine for the weekend!

17 Aug 2016 16:53:08
There's a picture somewhere of him driving home from Melwood, with some form of sling on his arm (although it doesn't appear to be pinning his wrist up to his other shoulder) . Could be precautionary, because I wouldn't expect him to be allowed to drive otherwise.

17 Aug 2016 16:59:03
You can drive as long as you are able to hold the steering wheel with 2 hands.

17 Aug 2016 14:37:49
Express and Star reporting Balo to Wolves, I'm just getting the wheel barrow out the shed I'll take him myself.

17 Aug 2016 15:26:38
Put in a bit of straw mate, because I have heard that there is def a chance this will go thru .

17 Aug 2016 13:27:39
Eds your probably going to laugh at this question, but was hoping you could give an insight into how the club was run under hicks and gillet.

Was also hoping you'd comment on the downfall of Rafa during this period and if possible if either hicks or gillet are currently paying in one way or another for the manner in which they ran our club.

Regards

(Sorry in advance for long question)

{Ed001's Note - there is no way of answering that question, as it would require a huge answer about Rafa and his politics and how can you give an insight into the running of the club? I mean which part of it? There is so much it would take a huge long article to answer it. Simplest thing is they ran out of money, but did a lot to move the club forward commercially. They were not as bad as they are made out to be, certainly a step up from the *censored* who sold it to them.}

Does anyone know what the 7m add on clauses were in the palace bid? Echo podcast mentioned winning the british gp, wimbledon and winning master chef. All very plausiible and achievable targets i think. 😅.

Apparently it was 80% games played, 20 goals scored and a Champions League place. Not sure of if it was true or not, or the percentage breakdown. But that was what i remember reading in an article.

17 Aug 2016 14:00:26
Champions leauge football 20goals in a season . So the often was a joke and glad the club are playing hard ball like other clubs do us.

I don't know them but i'm assuming by stupid clauses they were thing such as if he scores in a champions league final or is the top scorer in the league very ridiculous clauses basicaly!

What James Milner said about his conversation with Klopp about playing Left Back.

"I don't like playing there but I will give you the best that I can and if that's needed I will play there".

Got to admire the guys attitude.

Believable13 Unbelievable1

17 Aug 2016 13:04:53
That's what you get with players like Milner - 100% commitment. It's a shame other players don't have the same attitude.
He may not be the most talented, but he will carry out a job to the best of his ability. I think he'll do alright there, certainly better than Moreno.

17 Aug 2016 13:21:27
Sorry people, but professional or not you want to play in a position you feel comfortable with.

He needs to play where Henderson is as he's much more effective.

I can understand shifting his position left - right etc, but from a midfielder to a defender is a massive difference.

If the manager doesn't sign a left back then he's made a massive mistake, but I think that he will.

17 Aug 2016 14:01:34
The only problem I see with Milner playing left beck is his pace agaist faster wingers.

17 Aug 2016 14:17:29
Milner playing where Hendo does has been proven to severely weaken the side - witness most of last season

Milner is also > Moreno defensively simply because he can stay on his feet and read the play, I'm a lot more comfortable with him there (although I would have preferred to keep Flanno there instead), but we need to sign a specialist as soon as one becomes available.

17 Aug 2016 15:12:34
Milner is nowhere near being more effective than Hendo which is why he was sent out wide mostly under Klopp last season. That is simply not true. Of course, he doesn`t like playing there and he should say that as it is the truth however, I know that if you aren`t a defender by trade and you are playing there right now, you will automatically focus on the defensive side first and think of the rest later. by that alone, he`s much better than Moreno.

17 Aug 2016 16:54:55
Whereas Milner isn't and will never ne a cebtre midfielder, he can't do as much damage as Moreno and at least he'll follow instructions and play with some discipline.

17 Aug 2016 12:25:44
Hope Milner does well at LB. He did well for us last season, there is no place for him in midfield imo and he does give 100%.
Not exciting but dependable and he's on a fair whack so rather he played an important part.
Am keen to know if anyone has inside info though, what if Mikner gets a lengthy injury (hope not) or has a nightmare against Burnley, assuming he plays. Is anything lined up as a LB purchase if this happens?

Believable7 Unbelievable3

17 Aug 2016 12:38:40
i know this means playing to people out of position but would it not be better to play milner right back clyne left back he looked ok there last year.

17 Aug 2016 13:00:01
Or keeping Flanno and playing him there?

17 Aug 2016 13:42:10
I watched Milner at Wembley. He needs to learn the position as he did get caught ball watching a couple of times. But he is smart and capable. The thing about Milner is Klopp can give him instructions and learn from inevitable mistakes.

I think this can give him a lifeline of another 2-3 seasons with Liverpool. I'm in the minority but I didn't want Milner to leave and this ensures we keep an old experienced head which can only benefit the squad.

17 Aug 2016 14:57:04
All I want is a defender to defend correctly for once and stay on his feet.

17 Aug 2016 15:13:58
Or get a true left back in and stop the constant dithering and playing games.

Morning Eds and Reds. Having had a bit of time to calm down after the Arsenal game I just wanted to pass on some of my thoughts and see what abuse/ comments I could get back.

Firstly what an adrenalin emotional roller coaster ride of a game with the right result. Some fantastic goals and attacking football with some of the same old defensive frailties.

My question is this, over the last couple of seasons we have seen Liverpool turn on the style and produce electric performances against the likes of Ars, City, Chelski, Spurs and Barca. It's the teams that turn up with two banks of defenders that we struggle against. Do you think we can turn these games around and get a result against them?

We had the preseason game against Chelsea who played that way against us and again we seemed to struggle. Or do you think with the extra movement of the likes of Mane and Couts will make the difference?

Believable5 Unbelievable1

17 Aug 2016 12:02:06
Completely agree we are able to produce against the big teams but can't do it against smaller once in the other half of table our players just don't look bothered. To me that has been an issue for 20 years now we always try in big games and if we did even half of that in other ones we would win, their needs to be a change of mentality.

17 Aug 2016 12:02:49
Klopp not fixing those deadball situations we conceding since rogers years.

17 Aug 2016 12:13:16
Nothing to do with big names of big clubs. Teams who come and play their natural game ( City and Arsenal ), Liverpool play beautiful football. Mainly because we gets space to play behind and run through, teams who sit back and maintain a shape we struggle. Largely because we have no cou to pick those small pockets behind. Not we are good in the air to nick one in from corners of Set pieces. Instead we commit everyone forward ( especially our midfield ) and leave acres of space left wide open for players like hazard to run at us.

I saw Chelsea and UTD play. Both will cause us trouble. Chelsea maintain excellent shape ( just fantastic off the ball ) while we know how jose operates.

We play narrow and excels in small instructive passing and not very direct or hoofing the balls. Mane will be the key difference to unlock such teams.

17 Aug 2016 12:35:08
Agree it's been an issue for a while but I also feel our Creative spark has been very reliant on Coutinho in the past whereas vs. we now have Firmino, Mane and more goals from midfield in Wijnaldum.

Also we've historically lacked decent width, with limited quality deliveries from out wide and limited height amongst the forwards, hopefully Origi upfront and Clyne, Mane, Milner at LB we can improve our odds.

Finally we finally a bit more height from Can, Hendo, Grujic, Matip etc. on set pieces and I think we shouldn't underestimate the importance of height improving our odds against certain sides who previous could sit deep and invite crosses into the box with confidence.

In short, I think we have far more avenues in Attack now vs history and while never easy to break down a stubborn and well drilled Defence, we should do far better this season.

17 Aug 2016 12:39:02
I agree with most of that Harry but not sure how you think man utd look like they would give us problems. They looked awful for most of the game and one of the most unfortunate pieces of defending basically gifted them the game.

17 Aug 2016 15:22:03
The OP is spot on. Smaller teams come to Anfield and park two buses and that will be dificault for any team. We have to find a way to break them down without sending men forward recklessly, leaving gaps behind for counter attacks. We should also be better at attacking set pieces however, that will only happen if the delivery is spot on which for the last two seasons, have been rubbish as that is another way to break teams down. Players like Lovren, Matip and maybe Can and Grujic can be lethal from dead balls but we really have to work on punishing teams with them as well as defending against them which we have been struggling to do for a few years as well.

17 Aug 2016 10:55:19

I think he gets hyped up because he's England's number1 and traditionally England have always had someone world class in goal.
Shows how far standards have slipped in the England team.

17 Aug 2016 13:13:28
But he is certainly better then Ming Will Let.

He is not excellent or very good but he can do the job and the defenders can trust.

Cheers.

17 Aug 2016 14:00:19
Must be really historically! In my lifetime England's keepers have been Paul Robinson, David James, Chris Kirkland, Ben Foster, Rob Green and now Hart! I cannot remember England having a good keeper. But then I've only been watching Football since Euro 2004!

17 Aug 2016 10:46:05
Can someone please pass me a headache tablet? . The last few weeks on Twitter have given me countless migraines and the words 'Left Back' are two words I'm absolutely fed up of hearing. I think it would be easier to mention the players we haven't been linked with, every left back in world footballs name has been associated one way or another with LFC. Anyway, I'm going to have my say on what's become a rather mundane, over swelling but yet un-resolved subject for the LFC faithful and hopefully shed some light on the real issues we face at the left back berth.

So what's the problem?

The problem is simple, we don't have a solution and whilst many will back our 'first choice' left back, I'm personally at my wits end with the same old recklessness, lack of awareness and ineffectiveness from our little Spaniard. Alberto Moreno came to Liverpool in the summer of 2014, a deal worth £12 million. A signing by previous manager Brendan Rodgers, with a reputation of getting forward, creating chances and scoring the odd goal Moreno drew comparisons from English analysts to Barcelona's Jordi Alba and looked to be a real coup for LFC at the time although many Sevilla fans were glad to see the back of him. When you sum it up Moreno should be Klopps ideal fullback due to the fact he's always encouraging himself to get in advanced positions so, where's it all going wrong and what's the issue?

Well, when you get forward as much as Moreno does, you're going to leave gaps but this is normal and shouldn't be a massive surprise to any of us. It's all the other things he seems to get totally wrong, that is the problem so I'll explain the main causes for concern/ room for improvement.

The first issue is communication. When Moreno gets forward it's usually a deep midfielders responsibility to monitor that gap and cover it. Let's say the holding player (In this instance we will use Can) has moved up the field into an offensive position, the fullback should stay deep as there's too much exposure for a counter. Moreno unfortunately can't help himself and instead of holding off waiting for Can to get back into position he will burst forward leaving gaps for the opposition to pounce. You could say if we had a holding midfielder who just sits there like the old fashioned sweeper then Moreno would be safe to go forward and attack at will but when your player offers little going forward what's the point? Back to breakdowns in communication, it happens far too often between Moreno and Clyne. They both shouldn't be pushing forward at the same time as it means both fullbacks end high up leaving us short on numbers at the back. I will say, Clyne is just as much at fault in this situation.

The second issue is what I touched up on above, what does Moreno provide in advanced positions? Well, pretty little if i'm being honest. The amount of time he spends up the field I think it's fair to say you'd certainly expect more from him. Rarely is a good ball played into the box, rarely is he seen having a clear crack on goal and the lad can't pass 5 yards let alone 20 yards giving the opposition advantage to counter us down the left hand side when retaining a loose ball or a bad pass.

The third thing is his rashness. There is no excuse when an opposition player has his back to goal in the box for Moreno to dive in. Time and time again we see him make these un-necessary lunges and not looking like learning from it. He will get caught out positionaly from time to time due to the nature of his game and I'd forgive that if he gave something back to the game offensively. He offers nothing at both ends which is what worries me and I'd go as far as saying he's a total liability.

The only other available option we have is James Milner playing left back and whilst it's an odd decision I have to say there is some sense to it. When Wijnaldum plays, lots will be expected from Gini to break deep and join up with the attack. When this happens there will be space in the midfield and having Milner left back means he can drop in there and cover. Also, his second ball into the box is very good so when he is in advanced positions he has it in his locker to put dangerous in-swinging balls into the box.

But for me the perfect formula is a Finnan and Riise combination where one goes forward at will and the other remains firmly defensive. I'd have personally broke the bank for Hector he would've provided the defensive stability which we so desperately need. Failing that we should've got Chilwell a young aspiring fullback with a good reputation and recommended to Klopp via good friend and Huddersfield boss David Wagner. The thing is who will join? Nobody stands out in the academy and long term options are now running thin, fingers crossed Klopp has a backup plan as I feel we can't run into the season without a recognized defensive left back.

Believable5 Unbelievable8

17 Aug 2016 11:30:11
Sorry my paracetamol are left back in the house ;)

17 Aug 2016 11:30:32
So what you are saying is the holding midfielder might as well play left back all game then? Good, I repeat good footballers know when to utilise space going forward without compromising the team, Moreno has no positional sense whatsoever and is hopeless at defending in all areas, either play him left midfield or get shut, as for Milner at left back, would it not be better to play clynne at left back and Milner right back as he has played there from time to time.

17 Aug 2016 12:14:55
Moreno is no worse than some of the following

1. Marcelo
2. Danny rose
3. Alves
4. Walker
5. Korolov

They all have a speciality holding player BTW.

17 Aug 2016 12:20:16
Clyne doesn't get constantly get caught up the pitch when we're being attacked, it's called football intelligence, knowing when to get up the pitch, an positional sense, Moreno lacks both of these. If you full backs have them you don't need a holding midfielder.

17 Aug 2016 12:27:14
Another issue for me is he can't tackle. That's really worrying.

Humans have the ability to learn but it does seem a very slow process with Moreno. From match performances at least, I have not seen any.

Confidence is a hard thing to judge. I'm sure it is low and that is not helping the situation.

Ultimately, he needs a recongized first teamer in front of him to take the pressure off and allow himself to grow pressure free.

17 Aug 2016 13:16:21
What team does korolov play for?

17 Aug 2016 10:37:08
HAHAHAHA

I have just seen on sky sports (OK please do not shoot me) that Balotelly may move to MAN U.

Aside from the fact that Mourinho did not want to waste his time with him at Inter, and that he is the laziest player in the premier league, I would like to put on record that i would approve of a free transfer to Utd for this player. I would drive him to carrington and shake his hand before he signed.

Oh how i wish this were true.

Sadly, it won't be.

Hello Ed01,
Thanks for this forum, it has helped me tremendously to be able to express my passion for football in general and Liverpool in particular and avoid unnecessary confrontations with family/ friends/ foes that support other teams, seeing that here when i express my opinion or comment and the other is being confrontational, i can easily just keep scrolling .
Quick question, who do you see as an appropriate candidate for Captain, Henderson is okay, but he was chosen by BR, and i believe JK would need to choose his own to further stamp his authority on the team. Personally, i am liking what i see in Klavan, he appears solid, mature, composed with a level head, so won't be prone to rash decisions that may further incite his team members.

Believable1 Unbelievable7

{Ed001's Note - Henderson is the captain for me.}

17 Aug 2016 10:16:03
Agree with Ed - Henderson by far the standout candidate. Dedicated professional, fearless and tough on the pitch and a high quality player. He is not captian because Rodgers made him captain - he is captain because he is the best player for the honor: Klopp clearly thinks so too.

17 Aug 2016 10:31:50
Hendo for me absolutely.
Can't think of anyone else who comes close right now.

17 Aug 2016 11:39:21
A few decent friendlies does not mean that Klavan should be vying for captain. He has looked promising but as ed1 has eluded to, friendlies are not an indication of how a player or the team will consistently perform, and in a game which we won thanks to a gung-ho second half attacking performance in which we conceded two late goals, where Arsenal could of quite easily snatched a draw, I would not be recommending any of our back four for captaincy anytime soon. Not being negative but definitely work to be done.

17 Aug 2016 12:49:17
Just because Klavan and Lovren aren't captain that doesn't mean that they can't be vocal leaders on the pitch still. In fact they definitely should be anyway regardless of who wears the armband.

Henderson is a fine captain.

17 Aug 2016 13:06:37
We still go on about "captains" too much in this country IMO.

17 Aug 2016 13:31:37
He might not get that many games.

17 Aug 2016 09:27:16

Another day, another stupid post about a left back!

17 Aug 2016 10:14:41
I thought it was a reasonable question.
We read everyday 'Klopp IS looking. ' Or from some other source 'klopp isn't looking'.
Clarification on Kloops position regarding the left back position would be nice.

17 Aug 2016 10:37:05
Short of asking Klopp directly I don't think your going to get an answer.
I imagine Klopp wants a new left back, it's if there is anybody attainable right now, we messed up the chance to sign chilwell, and hector has signed a new contract.
Can't remember what happened to the villa lad top of my head, amavi?
We have signed that young left back, he's not ready but you never know he might get games, klaven can cover there as can Gomez.
Left back is going to be our Achilles heel this season though.

17 Aug 2016 10:48:41
james milner is going to be playing there, like it or not that is the situation we have ended up with.

17 Aug 2016 11:09:31
It's all about the right player being available for the right fee, long term solutions instead of expensive short term solutions.

17 Aug 2016 11:27:27
The eds have told us over an over again the same answers to these questions so why keep asking.

17 Aug 2016 12:43:00
It's Milner unless something of a surprise comes up.

I think he'll do a decent job there myself, even if not ideal because
1) it's not his natural position and
2) he's not the best crosser of the ball with his left foot
However If he stays conservative in his positioning, and occasionally breaks forward when there's a massive overlap, then I think we'll be fine until Jan.

17 Aug 2016 08:40:09
