Pinkman if you want top 4 you have to win your home games. The problem is I don't see Everton loosing many games then utd can't get any worse so they will start picking up more points and spurs have improved lately who's being dramatic I'm being realistic. If we get injuries to key players then it's going to be hard I never said we are not in the race so you must be on the blue stuff again.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Good point Red Raj, home form is key. And only Citeh have a better record than us so its looking good.

Hi quick question. What did you you make of Bertrand's performance today. I've personally only seen him play a few times (squad player at Chelsea) He surprised me today, quicker than I thought and considering he's only just joined Villa he was very vocal and seems to have the appetite to make it in this league. Not asking if we're going to sign him just your opinion. Very impressive debut IMO. Thanks

i have previously been a lucas hater. he did make some sort of impact today, but to be honest the change of formation helped. although really moving coutinho and henderson really shouldn't make as much difference as it did. anyhow, lucas injured again, hopefully not for too long. wasn't a penalty for me and I think today showed, at least for now, gerrard is better further forward.

read in the media Liverpool will view this as 2 points dropped. personally, I think it's a fair result. really bad start.

also, it hasn't been mentioned here yet, but say we did get champions league.with our defence. can't see us doing very well, let's just hope the defence just 'clicks' and all is well.

besides, youth can get better and we have the rest of this window and the summer yet.

Not good enough. god lads we are lfc. Top 4 will be hard on that display.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Why is it, that unless we win 6-0 every game, there is always "cause for concern"? I didn't see the match as I got my days mixed up(I thought we played tomorrow!) but to come back from 0-2 down shows good character.

It's not the end of the world guys, it was obvious that we were going to drop points some time as most teams do.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah because teams that get top 4 never have draws from 2-0 down! Every team has dropped points. It's why they play the game.

Agree0 Disagree0

This is actually the first game Lfc have have not played well played since the Hull game where we were poor from start to finish. We have to improve immediately. The DM position is not for Gerrard BUT for specialists of the position (Lucas). Let`s take heart from this point because in the past, we could have lost. Sometimes if you can`t win a game that`s slipping from you, damn we don`t lose it. Try to get a point and live to fight another day. This point might become important come May.

Agree0 Disagree0

Think Liverpool have been playing gr8 stuff under brenden but we are letting in to many goals prob 2 every game we are not a hard team to beat you have to keep clean sheets it could cost us top four

Agree0 Disagree0

Good fight back today but all our failing were of our own making. Mignolet should be more commanding, it's his area, he should RULE! Nice to see we can come back from 2-0 But what we found out today was:

Gerrard is NOT a DM, he probably will need time to bed in; time which we do not have.
Without Lucas we are all over the place. Our defence is too exposed and every time the opposition attacks they seem to nearly score, scary!
I love Stevie Gerrard, he is a king amongst men, my hero for all eternity but he does slow things down. Our midfield of Allen, Lucas and Henderson seem to give any team a hard time. What happened in the first half?

BR has to work this out. his job. Let's hope Everton don't win so we can stay in top4.
Glass is not half empty it's half FULL! John Henry will bankroll who we need and the rest of the season is to play for.hard match to watch.
YNWA

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I understand the worry for Gerrard. I think the only way we can accommodate him is in a 3-5-2 BUT where does that leave Hendo and coutinho? We play good without him BUT his long range passing (as seen for the penalty) and his ability to start attacks from deep is very essential. Take heart, fellow red men. 17 games to go and a lot can still happen.

I don't understand the people still criticising Skrtel. He seems to be a 'liability', 'slow' and 'average' in some people's eyes. His game today underlined his credentials: athleticism, strength, and aerial ability. He seemed to easily contain Benteke; I only recall him losing out once in an aerial duel against the striker, and the goal was Mignolet's fault. Perhaps he is not the best ball playing centre back, but defensive play has to come first. He was very solid today, and has been all season. And yes, he has been pulling shirts, but that happens in EVERY game with almost all centre backs. I don't know why Rodgers dropped him last season, perhaps a falling out? Honestly, people should be more concerned about Johnson and especially Cissokho; the latter seems a clumsy player devoid of any ideas and ability.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Thought he had an outstanding game with crucial tackles at crucial times.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah but he doesn't play this way every week I think that's people's point.

Agree0 Disagree0

He was good today and kept Benteke in check for the most time. BUT he always has a mistake, rash tackle or own goal in him which is what scares some of us.

Agree0 Disagree0

Redohio, I don't really agree. An own goal is hardly ever from poor play, it's just bad luck. Yes, you get a few like Phil Bardsley's against Chelsea where it is their fault, but Skrtel's haven't been like that. I think he don't make many rash tackles actually, I think he's a very good tackler, great at sliding in last minute and superb aerially. I don't think 'good' gives him justice for his performance today; if Kompany played like that, the plaudits would be pouring in from fans and pundits alike.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - sorry but you are talking nonsense. He was beaten repeatedly by Benteke in the air. If Kompany played like him, City would never have bought him! Oh and all Skrtel's own goals came from poor play, he was caught out of position, far too deep, and so ended up diverting a shot.}

Wow.Sorry guys but I have to agree with the ED on this one.
My beef with Skrtel is that when he has a header which is unchallenged he can't even find one of our players to head the ball to. That is basic. We did not have enough of the ball yesterday because we kept heading it back to Villa.
We bought 2 cb's in the summer and we are over halfway through the season and they still have not been paired together. Sahko and Toure need to be played so we can see whether or not they are any good together.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed001, we'll just have to agree to disagree, and hopefully respect each other's opinions.

WOW BR has some tough decisions to make.
I hope I am safe in thinking he understands now that every time lucus doesn't play we are wide open to counter attacks, I knew we would struggle today as no one can fill his position, and with his injury FSG may be forced to dig a little deeper this window.

Defensively we are a shambles even though we have about 15 defenders on our books.

I think he also need to make a decision on SG future, for me he slows our play down and we need to look forward and not to what a great player he was. and oops he clearly is no DM as BR found out in first half.

good recovery from the boys though hendo good second half was high point, sturridge moody and did not work hard enough today. cissoko OMG, coutinho what's happened? were going to need to beat the big boys at home now to keep 4 th place.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I didn't want to be negative tonight but the only negatives I can see tonight is cissoko anfsome of the so ccalled fans on ere

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I love his work ethic and effort BUT he is just too limited to play the position our system requires. Enrique`ll be back very soon. He`s no world beater but is much better than what we have atm.

Gutted we didn't take the 3 points but have to be pleased with a point after the shocking 1st half, could be a big point at the end of the season. Shows today how important Lucas is, he's a master at that role and can't expect Gerrard to be as comfortable in it. Gerrard needs to be further up the park, still the first name on the team sheet in my opinion. Hopefully Enrique will be back soon as I think he's a massive miss. Not sure if the defensive weakness is the players or the system leaving the defence exposed, to often I felt today that one ball down the sides was turning the defence and causing us reel problems. Two big games coming up and I think if we can go into the Arsenal game with 2 victories we'll be sitting in a good position in the table.

Agree0 Disagree0

Good point, Bilverstone. Our attacking style makes us unbalanced atimes which leads to us scoring 5 and the opposition scoring 2, sometimes 3. BR has to find the right mix. I`d rather we score more goals than not score enough because we`re scared to push people forward. (which was my main beef against Rafa and Roy). This is because good and goals scored could prove massive at the end of the day. City won the league on the last day on good so we cannot neglect that. Comparing our good to everton`s, we a 10 goal advantage and a 19 goal advantage on goals scored. That`s almost like an extra point. Villa play that counter attacking style w/ pace and power upfront which explains why the have a better away record than at home. I knew we would have probs w/ them BUT not to the point of going two down due to good play from them and poor tactics from us. They always get beat at home because they are incapable of dictating the play like say, we do at home or on the road. Anyway, take heart, fellow redmen. 17 games to go and a lot can still happen.

Agree0 Disagree0

To be fair, bobatron, all of those things are true. We're pretty well the definition of inconsistent- sometimes brilliant, sometimes good, occasionally (like today, particularly in the 1st half) poor.

Agree0 Disagree0

RDL, I completely agree. I wish BR would shut up about winning the league, it just makes him look stupid when he says stuff like 'We can't compete with the financial firepower of City and Chelsea' after performances like yesterday.

Simon Mingloet has plenty to learn and he would. But Not in the middle of a break out season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Migs is having a rough time and needs support and not slating. I shudder to think what our season might have been like if he hadn`t saved that penalty vs Stoke. That set the tone for our season thus far. He`s rescued us a lot this season and we need to stand by him and the whole team.

Can see Stevie ending up in the MLS personally.

And that's not me having one go. Club legend but father time is catching up and does n't make the best business sense.

Sorry

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Didn't really think of it that way Taffy. Stevie's legendary status is well and truly stamped on the liver bird. We will tell our grandchildren stories of the man who scored that screamer against Galatasary to keep scouse dreams alive. Then showed unquestionable passion and belief in Istanbul after being 3-0 down scored a header and rallied to crowd to believe this tie isn't over. Both him and Carra felt the crowds pain that night and decided I am Liverpool I will not go down without a fight. I am so proud to have been brought up in the city of Liverpool as our never say die attitude, humour and ability not to take ourselves too seriously red or blue is why Merseyside has the best fans and sports personalities in the world. Gerrards best days are behind him and like Carra we will miss him when he's gone but a new scouser will emerge with talent and fire in his belly. Step up Jordan Rossiter, Jack Dunn, John Flannagan and co the stage is yours. TAKE IT!

I think Suffolk Red has it right with putting Johnson left back and kells right, I also think gerrard chould be playing Am
with Lucas and Hendo In Cm, for me Coutinho is yet the finished article and would be better covering for gerrard atm.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

But our best performances have been when Lucas, Allen and Henderson have been our midfield.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jan 2014 22:28:46
I agree with you mighty red henderson, allen, lucas is are best midfield proof was against tottenham complete midfield display.

Agree0 Disagree0

All valid points. But SG`s ability to start attacks from deep with his long-range, bending passes is also crucial because they do not allow the defs to settle after we win the ball back. Br has to find a way to get his best players on the field and so far, he`s done that. I do think he might have underestimated AV a little because that formation with no natural DM is aking for touble regardless of who you play. That attitude needs to change and fast.

Agree0 Disagree0

You could bring in darren for Sissokho

Agree0 Disagree0

Teapot I asked the same question as soon I hearted West Brom had sacked Steve and was met with questions of why would he want to be a defensive coach when he's been a manager. For me we should offer him the the job under the circumstances where if he's offered another managerial role we will let him go with our best wishes. Let's face it our defence is disjointed, something he could resolve. If and when he does receive a good offer to manage again we could also give him first refusal to loan our youngsters. Win win for me. Opinions from Eds or fellow reds much appreciated. YNWA

Two points dropped, even if we came back from two down. BR had wrong formation in first half, which was quite obvious. Second half we did great but lacked that killer pass. Cissokho is a black hole. Anything goes to him, goes out of bounds or to the opponent. Never seen a left back so useless at left back. I would prefer someone starting in a wheelchair next time over him. A little harsh, but he is truly useless. I realize we are short on LBs but why can't we put Johnson there and start Kelly at RB?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Whilst I agree Cisssoko is not the best, he is by far not the worst. The rest of the defence had a shocker. let's not make him the scape goat for all the problems. At least he had effort.

Also, now Gerrard has admitted he had a shocker and can maybe see he is better second half, can Brenda have the guts to use him as an impact player.

And as for the Lucas haters. ha ha

Talk about players changing games

Agree0 Disagree0

I have to disagree there, definitely a point gained. We didn't play well but still got something from the game. A draw was more than fair in the end.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry Taffy but nobody is making a scapegoat of Cissokho. He's useless.

Agree0 Disagree0

I was going to say the same thing, Juicer. That is DEFO a point gained. Coming back from 2 down to tie a game we lost in similar circumstances last year shows the mental strength of this team. However, we have to b more proactive instead of being reactive while going about our business. AV played well and gave us our biggest challenge yet at home so props to them. In these situations, if you can`t win a game, damn well don`t lose it. Take what you can get and keep moving.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we were all happy to get to half time with something to play for. Apart from an awful miss and the width of the post it could have been 4-1. It wouldn't have been undeserved either.

Saying that scoring early in the second half you would hope we would go on and nick it. Following Lucas going off injured the tempo dropped again and we allowed av a bit more freedom.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jan 2014 20:07:13
Well from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against Aston Villa is a tough point eanred but we should not be going 2-0 to the likes of Villa in the first place. We were at home and we did nothing until Sturridge scored except allow Villa to dictate the flow of the play and score twice. I wasn't expecting much else as we should have known everything goes through Benteke but still we never marked him tight enough. We are unbeaten in 2014 but have conceded 5 league goals in our last 2 games against alledgedly lesser teams, Rodgers says we have the easier run in out of all top 4 teams but on our latest form I beg to differ. Not even a month on from Christmas Day but we have fallen from top of the league to 8 points behind the leaders and our defence is suffering lapse in concentration constatntly. We are still in the hunt for CL contention but only if we sort out our defence and we need to start getting regular clean sheets again. I would happily take a 1-0 wins in the remaining 16 league games. On the positive we could make a late push for the title still as long as we overcome Arsenal, City, Chelsea & Everton at home.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The lack of clean sheets is a worry because they breathe confidence in the team. However, we are still on schedule. The title was a big ask BUT who knows what could happen in the future. Villa will because problems for teams on the road this year because of their counter attacking style. Last year against Villa and Stoke, no points. This year, 4 points. An ounce of progress is better than none.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jan 2014 20:06:43
I am fairly naive to formations and tactics. But to my eyes why did BR try to play 4-4-2 when all season we have had our main success with 4-3-3? Was it purely to accommodated Sturridge? I am sure we have played a 4-3-3 with Suarez off Sturridge. Gerrard is a fine player but do we Liverpool fans get caught up in what he has done for the club, as opposed to what he can now offer? I love stevie but we seem to feel the need to play through him when he plays, like posted earlier it am uneasy with him given the responsibility of a holding role. Again I claim to know nothing about tactics I am just a general fan of 32 years, gutted with the first half today.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

PM I personally couldn't understand taking Coutinio off. For me he had to take either Ally or Glen off. Take Ally off put Glen left back move Sterling right back. Take Glen off again Raheem right back. Couts passing today wasn't great but he showed me more than both full backs put together and young Stering can play RB he may make mistakes but he shows passion which Glen and Ally are sadly missing. YNWA.

Agree0 Disagree0

BR got the changes right because they mad the impact required. That is a sign of a coach who knows he made a mistake and fixed it w/ immediate effect. Couts wasn`t having a good game and needed to regroup. He`s a wonderful talent and our future so don`t fret on that front. Couts wasn`t the problem today. Tactics and attitude were.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agreed with taking Coutinho off tbh. I don't think we have the personnel to carry four attackers and for me it was either between him or Sterling, with Sterling being in much better form.

18 Jan 2014 19:57:52
A minor setback today, credit to Villa, they took the game to us in the first half and punished us for our slow start. We should have won but it just goes to show you cannot take anything for granted in this league. I think Brendan made a mistake with his team selection, Coutinho needs a break and as many of you have said, Gerrard looked unconvincing as the holding midfielder.
I knew Beneteke would trouble us but the ease with which he won long ball after long ball was concerning - our defenders just drop off him. Everton next week and they have real quality up front and Lukaku like Benteke seems to have the edge on our defenders.
In the end it is two points dropped at home, the top four race will be extremely tight which makes next week's game extremely important!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

That will be a point gained to you sir because we were 2 down staring at defeat. We didn`t start fast and allowed Villa to take the game to us which shouldn`t happen. Our energy and intensity wasn`t there in the first half and that is down to BR. We rectified the situation in the second half BUT the damage had been done. We can`t win every game even though we try to going into every game.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jan 2014 19:52:39

Agree0 Disagree0

Harry has now outted himself as a blue nose. Bu seriously, Everton are good enough to get a point here because they are a good team as we SHOULD have gotten all three at goodison if the ref and Allen had done their jobs (not criticising Allen who had a good game today but stating a fact). We will have o earn the right to play and win so we`ll see. And even if we beat them, NOTHING would be settled yet.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Blaming everything on Gerrard is stupid, the whole team didn't play well, what about our defenders? When Gerrard was injured how many clean sheets did we manage? Despite spending lots of money in this area! Shifting Suarez from CF to LF isn't helping us neither playing Sterling every game? Today Gerrard passed some brilliant passes to sterling but he cocked up everything! Truth is we are not as good as people thiking but Suarez goals parpered the cracks now shifting him from CF to LF his less effective, we massively missed his goals today! BR has really done good compare to other mamagers in previous years but wasting some of our money isn't helping him neither our owners have got lots of money to cover BR mistakes, he needs to be extra careful when buying players/spending owners money!

Agree0 Disagree0

BR learns from his mistakes very quickly (good job w/ the changes at half time). He`s still learning. And those who think we will win every game are deluded. Even Real Madrid don`t win every game.

A very close call - draw was probably a fair result. Villa was never easy. We were absolutely dire in the first half, better in the 2nd half when the extra man in midfield (Lucas, then Allen) was brought on. Sterling was my MotM, followed closely by Sturridge. Central pairing of Skrtel and Toure? it simply doesn't work - we need Sakho back urgently!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think when you go 2 goals down then you might be happy with a draw but we did get an equaliser early in the second half. Disappointed if i'm honest.

Agree0 Disagree0

That`s the frustrating part of it. But we take the point and live to fight another day. Even if West Brom beat Everton, NOTHING would be settled yet until May.

If ever a game evidences how much we need a physical, mobile, Alex Song type of player in our midfield it was tonight .

If one positive to take hopefully John Henry sees this for himself .

Once Sakho and Kelly come in we Will be a lot tighter at the back .

We'll never have a better chance to get top 4.

Do above and we'll do it I've no doubt.

Keep the heads up fellow Reds

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We don`t need Alex Song. We need Lucas or a reserve player who can do the EXACT same thing he does so well. This is because when he doesn`t play, we struggle immensely.

Matt/Dyseny

You are an Emotional Gerard Fan. Open your eyes watch the game.

Agree0 Disagree0

I did watch the game Harry/Attitude. Yes Gerrard didn't play well in that role. I was disagreeing with the fact that you said he has been "shocking from years" (it would be "for" years by the way.)

Learn to read.

I know that you have to have the last word, so be my guest.

Agree0 Disagree0

Harry, Gerrard is wasted and risky as a DM but used as an AM he's still the best we've got.

Agree0 Disagree0

To Matt.

Year's means Plural. It can be 2 to Infinity. Gerard has been shocking from at-least last 2 years.

But Mate. why did you say I haven't got a clue?.

Harry Scousser

Agree0 Disagree0

Bang! Game, set and match, Harry Scousser. Side note - will you address the attitude name, mate? I find it rather amusing but some Liverpool fans may find it confusing that someone with scousser (note the plural s ;-)) in their name also actively supports United.

Look forward to your next return of serve buddy

Agree0 Disagree0

I think that's obvious Harry. At least to me it is.

Agree0 Disagree0

Harry, I think he said you haven't got a clue because, you clearly don't seem to have one. Your views contradict themselves on a regular basis and you do talk a lot of rubbish.

Agree0 Disagree0

Spot on Adam.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ozone, you have NO credibility whatsoever to criticise anyone because you ONLY show up here when we don`t win. When we beat Everton and Arsenal, you will crawl back into your cave and back to sleep alongside the bears who are hybernating during this awful winter season. LOL!

Agree0 Disagree0

I have to agree with Chris in Tamworth. Gerrard was too good to be just a defensive midfielder when he was in his prime and those attributes which are on the wane mean he can't be a good defensive midfielder now.
If he is to play it has to be in an attacking position for me, either that or as part of a 3 man midfield with Lucas and another.

well 1st 15 mins shows stevie is not a holding player 3 times now a player has ran off him terrible an just as I write he gives it away an villa nearly score.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

And the next 15 shows we need a whole new back four

Agree0 Disagree0

Yea dead ryt mate not one of them starting today would be in my first choice back 4 whole team have been shocking only player that is actually taking anything from the game in is henderson seeing that benteke is bossing toure an doubling up on him.

Eds, random question if you could answer it. Why are Liverpool changing there home and away kits every season now? Just that I've just seen the supposedly new kits for next season.
Many thanks in advance

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Kit manufacturers (in the case of Liverpool, Warrior) will look to obtain as much income as possible and the best way to do this is to introduce new kits each year.}

Thanks ed.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - just resting, it is a squad game these days.}

18 Jan 2014 16:43:55
Have to say lads I'm looking forward to the game but I'm very nervous. Two reasons for that. One is Villa have a very technical team. They can counter attack us with pace or we can defend deep and invite pressure which is very risky. The second reason is Skrtel. He is undoubtedly a brilliant no nonsense centre back, but he has to stop this shirt pulling in the box. So many times this season he has been guilty of shirt pulling, and I believe if it happens in this game Villa will get a penalty. It's just been pointed out by too many people, and now the referees are no doubt fully aware of what goes on. He's a huge figure and has a good jump and header on him, so I don't see why he feels the need to do it. He could cost us the game today if he doesn't cut it out of his game, so may as well stop it before it hurts us.

I don't mean to be negative but I have a bad feeling about today. Then again I had a bad feeling about the Stoke game and that worked out well. But it's just something about Villa that makes me weary. Hopefully we can out score them though.
Cheers,

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - undoubtedly? I doubt it, he is extremely average and rash, lacks pace but I would say you were harsh on him being no nonsense. He has come on in leaps and bounds in his play on the ball.}

Yes Ed but I'd still class him as more of a no nonsense defender than a ball playing centre back. I wouldn't call him average, rash yes but not average. I mean quite a few times he has saved us this season with his last ditch challenges. He's a good strong defender and as you say he is rash, but he has saved us a few times this season.
ROI.

Agree0 Disagree0

ROI most of those last ditch challenges came about because of his poor positioning in the first place. When Sakho/ Agger are fit I believe he wil loose his place much like last season.

A bit quiet on here recently.

Whats everyones predictions for todays game?

We have a good home record this season and with SAS both fit I can only see a Liverpool win. However, due to our sloppy defending I can see Villa getting a goal too.

I'll say 3-1, Suarez to score first.

5--0 Sturridge 2 goals and Toure, Suarez and Henderson

Don't know if I'm the only one, but not gutted if we don't sign anyone this transfer window.

The way I see it is you don't buy for the next 6 month, you buy hopefully for next 6 yrs. I worry that buy buying more attacking midfielders it will stiffle the likes of Suso when he returns in the summer.

We need a left back and a left sided midfielder. Unless someone of real quality comes up I'd rather we keep our money and wait until the summer for that RIGHT player to become available. We have enough to see us through to the end of the season in the Squad already.

johnson is reported to be a doubt for today, if there's any time for a player to grab his chance on RB (if johnson isn't playing) its today. rodgers seems to be inclined to give a replacement player chances providing they perform. hoping someone does that today, put pressure to johnson to keep his place.

A query for Ed001 if I may, just wandering what your views are on Glen Johnson (apologies if you've already given!).

It seems to me that over the last few weeks he's becoe more and more careless with the ball bordering on some kind of lackadaisical foggy funk. He moves the ball slowly taking two or more touches each time, when he does get forward he almost inevitably misplaces a pass then looks virtually uninterested in getting back to help out meaning that the center backs are being drawn out of position. His defending has never been great but that side of his game also seems to be in decline.

Would you agree? Do you think it is an age thing, or just already one eye on a future move?

Your views would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I don't think it is his age, it is an attitude that has often come to the fore with him. He is just very laidback, it shows in his play, when he will often slow it down and dither, usually when we were attacking with pace. I remember when he had long hair and would constantly be fiddling with it, everyone used to complain he was too busy messing with his hair to play the game. In my view, that was just a symptom of an underlying issue, he needs to be pushed to perform at his best, and with us he is not being pushed. He waltzes back into the team the moment he is fit, no matter how well any replacement is playing.}

Thanks Ed.

Personally I think Kelly offers far more in defence and is not too shabby moving forward either. When fit, I think he should be ahead of Johnson.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree, Kelly should be in ahead of Johnson, I think Johnson has a problem with his contract negotiations and it's affecting his attitude! the amount of times he has played poorly and still gets in ahead of Kelly is a mystery, it would not bother me if we sold him while we can still get some money back.

Hi all. Question for Ed001.

What is exactly Gerrard's new role? Is it a Pirlo-like role? and what is your opinion on this?

Thanks Ed001.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - that is exactly what it is. Hold position to be in place to cover the defence, but mainly to be there to create from deep. It is often referred to as a quarterback role, because they are intended to pass from deep. It is most useful when you have pace up front and on the wings, which we do with Sterling and Sturridge there, as it forces the opposition to drop deep or spend the game chasing back towards its own goal. So you either give up space or chances as an opponent. Either is good for us.}

Thanks Ed001 for your quick answer.

Do you believe Gerrard fits the role well? Surely he has got all the qualities. And what would be the other two midfielders role? We know that Rodgers like to play 3 midfielders. So the other two midfield slot should be Henderson and Lucas/Allen/Coutinho?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Gerrard has the physical and technical attributes, it is the mental ones that worry me. He doesn't have a defensive mindset, he is always looking to go forward. If he can adjust, then he will be excellent. As for the other two, it would be useful to have Hendo in there to do the running for Stevie. Lucas would be my choice, he is less wasteful in possession than Coutinho and can score goals, unlike Allen, when given the chance to get forward.}

On what planet will Lucas ever score more goals than Coutinho or Allen Ed? Just curious! He has 1 goal and 4 assists in the last 4 season combined.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jan 2014 00:59:43
Moving away from the finance and the transfers, what are your opinions on Gerrard playing the holding role?

I personally can't see Gerrard being able to successfully perform the holding role. If he doesn't have the legs to play higher up the pitch he certainly doesn't have the legs to play as a defensive midfielder. I can see why Rodgers wants him in the side as his range of passing and vision are second to none, however Gerrard wants a static role where he can receive the ball and spray passes all over the pitch.

If he were playing in Spain, Italy or France he would be well suited as the game is much slower, but here in the Premier League he will get overrun in midfield. The team will have to play much more defensive as attacking midfielders will have to drop deep to help him out with his defensive duties, thus causing opposing teams to inflict needless pressure onto our defence. If you think we are conceding too many goals now it would be suicidal to continue playing Gerrard in this role.

Would Lucas have any effect playing in an advanced role?

I can't see Lucas having an effect further up the pitch. He has been a defensive midfielder for several years now and his game has evolved in a different direction. The only thing I can see Lucas doing from an advanced position is running back to assist Gerrard with the defending.

The only role available for Gerrard is continuing the partnership he has with Lucas in central midfield. I see no need for Gerrard to play deeper than Lucas. It is like playing Suarez out wide and Coutinho up front. It is not necessary to change anything as drastic especially when we are in a fight for Champions League qualification.

KISS! There is no need to complicate things.

I would like to hear your opinions, especially Ed001.

Red Rum

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it all comes down to him, if he can switch his brain over to a defensive way of thinking, then there is little need for him to have to do much running. He should be able to position himself correctly to cut down on that, the way Pirlo has been doing all his career. As for Lucas, he was bought as an attacking midfielder, I don't see the issue with finally giving him a chance to play as one!}

I know it was a tall order and only his first time in an advanced role last week, but Lucas was completely lost in the game against Stoke.

I am a Lucas fan and vs the Bigger teams as a DM he is exceptional at breaking up attacks.

Not convinced that he can play in an attacking position.

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers for the reply Ed.

Do you think Rodgers should continue with that experiment today? Or will it leave us too vulnerable at the back? Especially with Villa playing counter attacking football.

Personally, I would play safe and stick to what we have been doing all season. After all, we are sitting in 4th, why take an unnecessary risk?

Red Rum

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I would stick with it, very few teams are as poor as Villa are playing, it is a good time to get him used to it.}

Ha ha ha.
That Jamie fella on Liverpool kop site, is a right person!
He has just posted that Liverpool are to buy Southampton's Rodriguez for £7m to be Suarez's replacement!
He uses The Mirror as an authentic source!
What an absolute tool!

He must of linked us to every player in Europe this transfer window.
His scattergun approach to tipping who we will buy is pathetic.
How many correct? Many more wrong I would assume.
I just find it amusing that someone would post such drivel.

Agree0 Disagree0

All he does is gather together all Liverpool related rumours from different sources, and gives his opinion. Nothing wrong with that, so there's no need to get abusive

No donkey king-all he does is pull Liverpool and the players to pieces at every oppertunity he gets! abit like some posters on here really. he's a parasite.

Now Sturridge is back I think we should go with a front three of him Suarez and Sterling. If you had asked me weeks ago there was no way I would have said play Sterling, but at the moment he is on fire.
I think even though we played better without Gerrard he is going to put in this sitting role now, so here is the dilemma. Who do you drop? Even thought Coutinho has not been to his usual standards. I think now is the time to give him a run in the number 10 role behind the front three. So this would mean dropping Henderson as the holding two will be Lucas and Gerrard. But Henderson has been great aswell so here is my idea for the time being.

Why not try Henderson at right back. His energy can get up and down the pitch and seen as Kelly is still not ready I think this would solve the problem for the time being. Also today I think we should give Smith a go at Left back with Sakho and Toure in the middle.

Ohhh yes. Legends always starts.
Pls watch Liverpool Vs Spurs and check how good we are without Gerrard.

I agree Harry but I said above I think we played better without him. I just know he is guaranteed a starting place now he is back as I do not think Brendan will drop captain fantastic even though we look better without him these days. I agree with Adam that he should now be used as an impact sub.
