The beginning of the season I had a discussion with my dad about Spanish full backs we'd just acquired 2 and we thought that Spanish full back weren't of a high standard after arbeloa who was at best a steady Eddie has been probably top Spanish full back at real if that was the standard we was getting 2 off Seville and athletico well I think our concerns were correct we also had mr selfie himself at the club Jose selfrique

Im stumped! What is this poster trying to say?

19 Jul 2015 01:34:49
Is Spanish full backs were so bad how is it the Spain team won every international trophy available. Maybe a young kid like Moreno needs a little time to adapt to a new country, language, style and team mates before you start writing them off.

Carvajal and Juan fran are decent, people were crying out to sign Montoya on here, and Jordi alba is good going forward for a full back. Azpilacueta (or Dave as they call him) is as good as any out there for his age.

Hi Ed's,
Is the delay in finalising the Benteke transfer just down to the terms of payments to villa and do you think he will join the tour before it ends?
TIA

{Ed002's Note - No and no.}

18 Jul 2015 23:51:05
Many thanks for the answer Ed, it really is appreciated.
In your view what do you think the delay is down to?
Do you think he is holding out for other offers possibly from CL teams?
TIA

Ed002 liverpool triggered his release clause Thursday and are still no closer to signing him now! There must be some sort of delay?

{Ed002's Note - Why? He has to have a medical and agree terms with the club and then the transfer can be processed.}

Eds did I read that we had signed a young Brazilian lad a few weeks back for the under 21s?
I'm not sure if I misread something or what. Can't remember his name for the life of me.
Maybe I made it up lol

I really can't wait for the new season to start.
It's amazing what a few weeks and a few new additions can do to give a new sense of hope.
I'm a typical Liverpool fan, and go into every new season with the belief that we have a shot at the league.
I've no idea how things will pan out, but that's the same for everyone.
Here's to the unknown.😎

Never normally post, sorry to have have upset a few. but it is not championship manager syndrome, failure to support or any other of the popular challenges to any criticism of a player.

My view is based on 48 years a season ticket holder, lower centenary (and before that kemlyn road for the old un's), and fair time watching away from home as well over the years. With regards to left-back I have seen them from from peter wall, ellyn when he arrived (similar age to mereno) alec lindsay, even rol evans (whom I had the pleasure of spending an evening with talking about the modern day 'defender'). moreno is one of the worst defenders I have seen in the red shirt. Of course all aspects of a game can be taught and but fundamentally he does not give a monkey's about his defensive responsibilities (and its not just playing as a wing back). For all those of you who don't like it, are you prepared to have another half dozen games when his errors directly lead to defeats. sorry in my book LFC comes before any player for me. If someone is letting the team and supporters down through repeatedly making the same mistake than is not on. Supporting does not mean being unable to see weakness when it is staring you in the face. Potential is worth working with, irresponsibility and lack of care is another thing all together. All I can say is Moreno is lucky he did not pay alongside a few of the old un' the likes of Tommy Smith and Ray kennedy would have had him by then throat at half time, for some of the thing he does (or does not do).8 million from Roma, I hope to goodness its true.

48 years. That's good enough for me. Thanks for sharing the benefit of your experience.

I can remember some pretty shocking defenders. If Moreno is near the top of this mans list then we should all listen.

Why do so many of the rest of you insist on being "patient"? Would Chelsea be patient with Moreno? Man U under Fergie? Any successful side?

Keeping doing the same things and expecting a different outcome is the definition of insanity.

Well I am the great Steven Gerrard and I say he is great. Really it is amazing what the internet brings out of people. Last summer we were linked with Bertrand and Mereno and everyone on here was saying how shirt Bertrand was and how good Mereno is. No Mereno is another scape goat. He is a kid with talent who needs to learn English and learn his trade. If fans like you had their way Lucas would be gone, and Henderson would be gone. When I started supporting this team we had the best fans in the world now we have a bunch of cry babies who hate every player on the team and moan about anything. To many signings, to few signings, not buying expensive " marquee players, buying expensive shit players. I have no idea how the eds read this crap all day. Phi and the fact you think Mereno is worse than koncheski tells it all.

Not sure you can lay 6 defeats at the door of a single player - it is a team game and, like it or not, Moreno is not solely responsible for a defeat in any game. I've already made reference to his defensive ability in a previous post so don't need to get into it with you but I think you are being overly critical. He is a young player, in a new country with a different approach and, on top of that, a poorly managed team (last season at least). I think he was very underwhelming last season but I certainly do not think he should be sold or that we should not give him a chance to make amends and improve. He needs more time to see if he can correct the flaws in his game - he was poor last season but he is not hopeless. It is also impractical to give players a single season then sell them on for a loss - players need time, especially young players, and Moreno is no different. I think, if the team is cohesive, it will make a significant difference to his performances. Whether it will alter his attitude? Time will tell - but let's give him that time first.

It really annoys me seeing players getting slaughtered by fellow reds when they have had one season in the EPL. He is still a kid and still learning. Maybe you should be asking questions of the coaching set up last season because when it comes to player performance last year he wasn't the exception,he was part of the rule.

I don't get this biased view at all. Moreno is a bad defender and Lovren is a great defender but poor tactics.
Moreno had as many faults as Lovren had last season.

18 Jul 2015 21:14:26
I agree, Moreno is a liability as he consitantly left far to much space in beihind him. Yes, he's quick but often goes missing and forgets his defensive resposibilities. Considering we spent 18 million, I would have expected a better return. BR lost faith in him last season and couldn't rely on Enrique to step in. I think he will depart and a replacement bought in. Having said that Gomez has the potential to step in. YNWA

"He's only had one season"
"He's in a foreign country"
"It's not him it's the coaching"
"He's underwhelming but we should give him another chance"
"You all said He was better than Bertrand"
"We shouldn't sell for a loss"
"We should back our players no matter how they play"
"Moreno is bad but Lovren is too"

Not one of these points makes an argument for Moreno being good enough.

Come on guys. We are in this to win stuff not to be a donkey sanctuary.

if moreno had proper cover then his mistakes would not be so bad , for me the good thing is he is a young player and he can get better , i saved the match of the days show from last season and we played arsenal and you should see how many time kolo made mistakes and a favourite on here lucas he made so many mistakes i don't know what fans see in him , but last season a lot of the older players made mistakes game after game and you never mentioned them as i say lucas made that many mistakes i don't know how he got games after the arsenal games really also the same goes for kolo , but lucas was played again and afian and in the last 2 games of the season his mistakes ked to 3 goals , now this is a player who is at his best and can not learn new things has he has the experience , so to try and lay the blame at morenos feet then you are wrong , i'm not saying he never made mistakes what i am saying is he made mistakes along with more experienced players who should be playing better , last season was a season of mistakes by the players and let's just hope they cut the mistakes out and play to their best then we will see the real liverpool , but give the kid a chance you never know he might get more goals this season

48 years - still a new boy then, first stood on the boys pen in 1959 - and in my humble opinion, Moreno is nowhere near as bad a defender as you say. We have been lucky since my first days to have a work ethos in the majority of sides in my time, where everybody worked for the team irrespective of their position - Chris Lawler, without doubt the best attacking full back I have ever seen, but by no means the greatest defending full back, but when he went forward different class - worse defenders than Moreno that I have witnessed - Jan Kromkamp, Torben Piechnik, Glynn Hysen, Avi Cohen, Fabio Aurelio, Julian Ducks - all of the above have had great games for Liverpool, but by god, they have all had there fair share of shockers - it's sad to read an LFC fan of so many years slagging off our modern contingent. They lad Moreno is not that bad, modern football dictates full backs are not just defenders anymore.

None of our defenders or goalkeepers are of a high standard. Which is why we leak goals and can't assemble a decent back 4

Well written John B, Moreno is young but had just one season and played in an unsettled sidde with lots if different tactics. A more settled year and good coaching and hopefully will improve.

The biggest issue so far as I can see was the lack of a cohesive 3 man partnership at CB and DM. I still think that's our potential achilles heel this season I'm afraid. We need a really top DM and to play Lovren/Sakho together IMO, should have bough Schneiderlin.

Haha. My season ticket has bigger nuts that yours 😂 give it up ladies. Love the fact that people assume they have a better understanding of football and players and transfers because they have sat in the stadium for a few decades. all that proves is your loyal to your club. I think Moreno being made the scape goat here is laughable considering all the "scapegoats" we have been reading on here since the season ended. Can we all not agree that 95% of our team were rubbish last year and get over it. New season starts soon I'm sure we will have a few more soon

meh. I like Moreno. Plus, on the list of "Liverpool players that made me shout at the TV due to their mistakes" last year, Moreno was way way way below many others. In fact, I can't remember how many times I saw Moreno absolutely bust a gut to get back into defense and cover or make a tackle. He puts in a shift. I remember a time when working your ass off for the shirt earned respect from the fans if nothing else. When did that change?

19 Jul 2015 08:37:50
There was a guy who used to sit next to me in the main stand every week. Season ticket holder for decades. Went to every away game. And yet you would not believe some of the absolute crap that came of his mouth. Loyalty does not always equate to knowledge or understanding.

Moreno is a young lad who has been dropped into a team which has defensively been poor for three seasons. Yes he has made mistakes. Sometimes he dithers far too much in the ball (his mistake at the ethiad being a good example) and he has some terrible habits (see performance at the emirates). But I do not believe they are anything that cannot be coached out of him. The lad has got ability and we need to stand by him. Not crucify him for one season when nobody in our defence came out with any credit whatsoever.

Christian Ziege: a world class player for Germany but just could not adapt to the premier league. Went from class act to rabbit in the headlights.
I would not be ready to dump Moreno yet, it also depends on what he's being asked to do. I believe Rodgers asked the full backs to bomb forward last season.

Sterlings first season we were so short he had to play, now we have an abundance of players, and seem intent on buying more, I know it has been discussed but I don't seeing hope for most of the youth setup. I've has a shot, and Gomez although he was obviously bought it, I just can't help but feel if players like teixera and rossiter were given some high class game time they could bloom. No one thought flanagan was ready and now is say he's our best defensive full back. There's nothing like premier league experience and like I said, some could raise there game more than expected, but I doubt we will ever know. You can't leave 2/3 first team players like markovic and lallana on the bench because someone might turn out well.

Believable8 Unbelievable2

18 Jul 2015 20:18:12
Fencey, which is why our inability to bring through our youth will be the end of us. Watching Tex and Rossiter vs Thai All Stars showed me that although a friendly, these boys can do a job for the team especially in league Cup games where the starters don't have to play. Tex plays like Coutinhoatimes and has vision for a pass. Rossitershows great composure and scored in his debut. What else do player like these need to do to get first team chances? You mentioned Flanno who showed he can cope. Wisdom and Ibe have shown they can cope as well so if these players can do a job and we have seen good debuts from Tex and Ross, that means there are more in our academy who can also do a job. All they need is a chance. But I guess we will hear the normal excuses like of them not being given chances with typical "they must be poor because if they were that good, BR would be playing them" or "all of them won't make it so why bother" nonsense I've read on this forum

Agree5 Disagree2

19 Jul 2015 08:09:29
Not all "kids" can be thrust into the limelight at 17 and flourish. Some take time to bring through. We are only just now at the stage when they can start coming through more and more, and they will, again, if they are good enough.

Out of all the top clubs in our league, we are one of the better ones for bringing the kids through.

Agree0 Disagree1

19 Jul 2015 09:25:09
Agree with slow dog, you can't just play them because they need a chance, how many of the top 4 do that?
Chelsea played Loftus Cheek AFTER they had won the league.
The stakes are too high these days for the managers and they can't afford a season where they finish 10th because their youngsters need a chance to gain first team experience.
Chelsea do it the best of all the top 4 because they manage to get good loans for their players. They don't pick the first team to show willing, they get a club who will play the player in the right position with the right system.

The reason I still believe Moreno is going to be a hit, is that he has so much pace. When we play with a high line, he is probably the best defender we have at tracing back and stopping counter attacks. So much pace!! I agree He still has to learn a lot, but many of his mistakes in defence was because Lovren is to far away.

Jamie Carragher on Dejan Lovren
https://youtube.com/watch?v=cZiYeQcaQXY

other mistakes I think is easy to improve on like not holding your hands behind your back, and clearing the ball straight away. What I have heard he is a smart lad, and well liked in the dressing room. Also remember that we played a 3 back system. He was a wing back much of the season, and it did not suit him at all.

He does not have the trickery, and we had no one to aim the crosses at. Therefore it is hard to know if he is good at it. If we play with a standard four at the back system, with a winger who he can combine with, and a striker in the box he can aim at, I am sure he is going to look much better.

Why shouldn't t we sell every player that is young, new to the league, new to the country, new to the language, new to the team mates. New to the system, new to the manager.??? Bizarre. It seems some people think we can replace our team every season without giving anyone an opportunity to develop or grow unless they are a local lad when they are at least given a tiny amount of grace.

I agree with you completely, Jackoo! I wonder where the so called "patient" fans are, ATM because that word seems to be extinct. Firmino hasn't kicked a ball yet and they want Lallana already gone after a difficult first season where the whole team was poor. I wonder what they will say about Firmino if heavens forbid, he has an average season. I guess the same fans will be saying that we should have kept Lallana.

18 Jul 2015 18:52:50
It's down to the players acquired last season to show what they can do. Llalana was very unlucky with injuries last season, but I think he showed enough ability to get our full backing.
It's difficult to tell an awful lot about a player during pre season where the test is nowhere near adequate to show what they will do in the premier league.
Personally, I really like Llalana and I like the fact that he wants to be here and fight for his place.
As for Moreno, I think he needs at least another season to prove his worth.
It's time that we got a settled team, as that's so important going forward. Saying that, competition for places is also a very good thing.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how every player evolves this season.

{Ed001's Note - to be honest I think it is more important to improve the teamwork, and focus less on the tactics. I think part of the problem was that Rodgers believed he was a tactical genius following the 2013/14 season and kept twiddling with them too intricately. The best teams have always had one simple system that the players on the pitch know well and are used to working with. Once you have that, then little tweaks, such as attacking the weak points of an opponent as they present themselves, become obvious to the players on the pitch, without the manager needing to constantly interfere.

For me, I would like to see him settle on one system, one way of playing and just get the players playing that way to the best of their ability. When a centre back gets the ball in his own half, he should know that what the midfield are doing and what the attack will be doing. He might not know exactly where they will be on the pitch, but he shouldn't need to look up to see if anyone is presenting themselves for a pass, he should know whether the midfield are doing so or not immediately. Unlike last season when the defenders would get it, look for a pass into midfield and all the midfielders have their backs to them not expecting a pass. If the defenders had known the midfield are not going to present themselves, then they could stop looking for the short pass and look further up field and reduced the dithering time. Each time a player dithers, it gives the opponent time to position themselves to block passing lanes and mark men.

We need that sharpness, especially if opponents put us under pressure, that quick pass from man to man, if we are going to break a press without resorting to long ball tactics. To do so, players have to know where each other is, they have to know who is making what run, without needing to think about it. Each time a player has to take a moment to think, it gives the opposition time. Teamwork is more important than any particular tactic, that is why a well drilled team like Southampton could do so well, despite having lost so many players before the start of last season. Each player knew what they were doing and what their job was. Rather than our team, particularly at the end of the season, spent far too much time trying to figure out their role.}

{Ed002's Note - As I explained over the early summer - Liverpool take advice from third party advisors and I am aware of one name being suggested to MG as an option to BR (and I explained he was never going to be a viable option). I was also aware of the efforts of a "super agent" to try and foist someone else on the club - but by then Rodgers was clearly secure in his job. I am also aware of another name or two that will lurk in the background throughout the coming season.

But for now the manager deserves some support.}

A lot of people have commented that we're making the same mistakes as last summer signing so many players but the circumstances are completely different.

2 summers ago we had a very limited transfer window. We added Migs to the first team and added a couple of squad players, Sakho and Aspas. We then went on an amazing run where we came second in the league and qualified for the CL.

This meant a couple of things, one we wanted to capitalise on our success and two we wanted to add to our threadbare squad to compete in the CL. We know what happened, we spent £120m bringing in 9 players, built a squad but then failed to push on.

This year is completely different. We are not trying to build a squad but fine tune it. Bogdan, Milner, Clyne, Firmino, Benteke and Ings are all direct replacements for players who have either retired, been deemed not good enough or forced a move. The only luxury buy was Gomez who's one for the future (although he may play sooner if he's as good as his pre-season suggests).

This summer is very different to last, every player improves the squad (Milner is better than today's Gerrard, I'm hoping Firmino is at least as good as Sterling). Do not think we haven't learnt from last summer's mistakes.

While players have been bought in who were not needed, I think it is very clear that players are not the main problem at LFC.

Agree5 Disagree1

18 Jul 2015 13:09:20
Parts of your posts are true however, I disagree globally. For example, Ings was not needed because Origi was already here. We needed a GK to compete with Mingo yet we go get a no. 2 from the championship. The replacements are for player who are still here like Lambo, Balo and Fab and until they're gone, it is what it is. All in all, we don't need to fine tune the squad. We need to impromptu the first XI and a couple of holes still remain even with some of the good signings we've made.

Agree6 Disagree1

18 Jul 2015 13:47:29
I think we now have a plethora of options for the front 6 players and, without doubt we are top 4 in that area.

But we still haven't fixed the back 5. And if we don't all that excellent attacking talent will be wasted.

We have Sakho and Clyne that, I would say are top quality players. Gomez and Llori have potential. Flanno is a great asset when fit. So, two quality and some potential. After that you're into players that might or might not be regulars in bottom third sides.

I still believe very firmly that we need a solid left back and a keeper if we are going to push.

That's not me being ungrateful to the owners or bleating that we've signed the wrong players. I think we've done well so far. I'm simply saying that a top quality side should be stronger at the back than we are.

Agree2 Disagree2

18 Jul 2015 14:17:39
Redohio, we want to get rid of three strikers so we've got three replacements (Origi, Ings and Benteke for Ballotelli, Borini and Lambert).

Bogdan was the replacement for Jones, he was never meant to be competition for Migs.

Liverpool aren't doing what you (or we) want, they haven't identified replacing the GK and CBs as a priority, they're replacing what they think is important.

Agree2 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 16:34:25
Which is exactly the prob, Muscat. Our holes are still there yet we are replacing players who either haven't left or need replacing. Chelsea had holes in their first XI and fixed them, no questions asked. They did not replace players who either haven't gone or aren't good enough or whatever. David Luis was an accident at CB. They got rid. Eto, Ba and Torres were poor. They got rid. They needed a true DM, a playmaker and a top strike. They went and got Fabregas, Matic and Costa. Job done! Football is not rocket science and what Chelsea do proves that. Is that too much to ask that people use their brains instead of complicating things for no reason which is what we do in the TW

Agree3 Disagree1

18 Jul 2015 17:59:38
I think the priorities were to replace the leavers and sort or our forward line.

GK and CBs are less of an issue this window.

Here's what his former Belgian manager had to say about Benteke and his attitude etc. Might help dispel some worries.
Georges Leekens believes the 24-year-old striker will flourish at Anfield under manager Brendan Rodgers.
Leekens was a mentor to Benteke after handing him his international debut in 2010 and managed him at international level for two years. He also managed him for a season at Belgian club side Kortrijk in 2009-10, where Benteke scored 15 goals in 34 games.

They have retained a close relationship. The Belgium press dubbed Benteke ‘the son of Leekens’ in the past and the pair have remained in touch.

Leekens : “Liverpool is definitely the right club for him. He is going to improve further over the next two years – he will be formidable. I’m sure he can fire Liverpool back into the Champions League and to lift major silverware.

“He works hard and will bring a lot to Liverpool’s play. I’m sure the Liverpool fans will warm to him. He has big qualities.

“He can play with his back to goal, has great control and he’s very fast. He’s good in the air but is actually better suited to having the ball played on the floor.

“He is big and tall and holds up the ball well, he is a tremendous player. But there is much more to his game than just being a goal scorer. He can turn and go and will draw in two or three defenders to give more space and freedom to players such as Coutinho and Fiminho.”
Leekens also rubbished fears that his fellow countryman was injury-prone, despite him being sidelined for six months after rupturing his Achilles last year.

“He is not injury prone. He looks after himself off the pitch and works hard to keep fit.”

Leekens also revealed:

Critics thought he was ‘crazy’ to give Benteke his international debut so young
As a teenager Benteke was perhaps too nice on the pitch, but has since become more aggressive in his play
Benteke works hard in training and behaves properly off the pitch – we won’t find him in the city’s clubs or pubs
Benteke is not the new Drogba, Carroll or Heskey; “He is a different kind of player”
He is a family man
He is good mates with international team-mate Eden Hazard at Chelsea

Believable5 Unbelievable1

18 Jul 2015 13:16:37
That's right, Simon. But Leekens as a manager, did not move that many trees either but his op is well received. Look, Benteke is very talented, scores goals and has great ability. That is not in doubt. The issues are that he is lazy, plays when he feels like it and doesn't show enuff desire and even his current Belgian coach Marc Wilmots, said the exact same thing two months ago. That is where his issues lie and if he can clean those up and we support him, he can flourish. In the end, it's all down to him.

Agree2 Disagree4

18 Jul 2015 12:04:28
So, with the imminent arrival of Benteke, I thought it wise to do a bit of research - have a look at how he gets most of his goals etc.

You would think that for a big lad he would rely on crosses and lay-offs to tap in, but he actually creates a lot for himself!

* His first touch and hold up play are really good
* Quick
*Strong
*Really good feet (for a big lad)
* Aware of what / who's around him
* Scores different types of goals

The only question marks, imo;

1. Will he work his socks off - every game?
2. Will he be a positive influence on the squad?
3. We we play to HIS strenghts?

If we get him playing at his best, consistently, I think he could be very, very good!

Consistency is key with him I think!

Just my thoughts.

He has all the attributes Mr T ,but he is a bit lacking in movement of the ball which is really important for the striker.
Former Belgian coach mentioned he prefers to play with the ball on the ground, which is a good thing and i am optimistic that our new coaching setup will help him.He did try to force move and was sulking but for past 3 seasons he was instrumental in his team's survival and bagged 16 MOM awards in the process.

Just wondered if people agreed with my thoughts that although we seem to have over paid for players this summer (Benteke, firmino, clyne, miners wages and fees) wouldn't you rather we did this and actually got our first choices instead of getting second, third or fourth choices like in recent windows. At least this way the responsibility lies with the manager and there's no excuses about recruitment. Let's just hope he got it right this time.

Agree0 Disagree1

18 Jul 2015 12:41:02
A 20 goal a season player costs around £30m nowadays. If Benteke succeeds he's worth the money. Firmino is similar, if he's as good as we hope he is then that's the going rate.

A player of Milner's quality would cost at least £15m, even with his higher wages we've got a good deal. Clyne was cheaper than both Chambers and Shaw and is arguably the best of the three, we got him for a great price.

Moreno. young, scored a good goal at tottenham, quick. on the other hand, can't tackle, can't kick with his right foot, positional play is shocking, for all his so-called the forward movement how many quality crosses and assists did he offer. Above all else he and is one of the most irresponsible defenders I have ever seen in a red shirt. Take whatever money is on offer and get rid. if he can take enrique with him even better, but that is probably asking too much

Believable5 Unbelievable8

18 Jul 2015 11:41:50
How many goals did Liverpool get in total.Doesn't help when you play a 20 year old winger as a forward for half your games and the other half an immobile petulant striker. I wouldn't bother crossing either. There was never any one in the box, might as well keep psoession.

Agree2 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 11:55:01
Is it too much to ask to give him a proper chance?
Last year he was barely out of his teens when he moved clubs and country, his English isn't great, he's a bit shy.
He was then played out of position nearly the whole season in a style of play that will do him no favours whatsoever.
This season I'm guessing we will go back to a normal back 4 so let's judge him after the coming season.

Agree2 Disagree1

18 Jul 2015 12:08:32
His crossing was noticeably poor but no way should we sell him. He's young and has potential, his season may not have been great, but he has the physical qualities like doped and stamina and a few of the ingredients to make a great full back, we can't just discard him now because he wasn't that great last season, his first season in a foreign country I may add. He played in a poor back 4, or as a lwb in a five, with very little constancy as who was next to him, probably sakho mostly.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 12:13:14
I bit of coaching and another shot wouldn't go amiss. defensively he made some mistakes but it's a new league and a step up, going forward he looked dangerous at times but crossing the ball into Sterling is pretty much a waste of time.

I can see if someone where to argue a new LB coming in and Moreno playing backup but letting him go now seems foolish.

Whatever happened to giving players second chances? Had Hendo left after a similar situation, would he be as important to us as he is now? Think, people!

Hello Ed. just wanted to ask your opinion on James Milner playing as central midfielder. with his experience and energy and his range of passing he could be the difference to us possibly challenging for top four along with Firmino and Coutinho's creativity with Benteke as the main striker.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I like Milner, but I don't think he has the quality to make a difference in central midfield. He is no step up over Henderson for me.}

18 Jul 2015 10:43:56
I like both Milner and Henderson, but I think it creates more problems elsewhere in the team than it solves, if we are playing them both as CM's. I can't see them both fitting personally.

Agree0 Disagree3

18 Jul 2015 10:49:04
Milner might not be the most creative player out there
But i think his endless energy and good engine will play a big part in our midfield. same as henderson he will harras others and keep them busy all the time and let the creativity part to coutinho and firminho to create and score.
I believe he will play a major role. hope so

Why drop Coutinho or Firmino? This Lallana loving needs to stop. He's scored 2 goals in friendlies against (with all due respect) much lesser teams. Balance is more important than shoe horning people into the team. I thought Gerrard taught all of us that?

Coutinho and Firmino should be played behind Benteke with a solid midfield behind them; Milner, Lucas and Henderson.

Don't get me wrong, I love Lallana as a player but the fact is Coutinho and Firmino are better players and we shouldn't weaken the entire team just to get all 3 of them on the pitch.

Oh and Harry, I'll just say this in advance; Kovacic isn't happening.

Agree2 Disagree1

18 Jul 2015 12:11:29

Whose getting drop once Sturridge comes back? Benteke is not coming to liverpool to play second fiddle to Sturridge and we aren't paying 35 mill for someone to come off the bench in the last 20 mts.
Provided you play three in the middle and two up top, one of Firmino / countinho is on the bench.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 12:44:15

18 Jul 2015 13:29:25
I noticed that too Indian scouser, and his goal in the first game was lucky as well in my opinion. Meant to take the ball in his stride and ended up cutting it back. That being said, two good finishes. Just always feel he's not quite athletic or strong enough for the modern game.

Agree1 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 13:34:49
Stop the Lallana bashing already because it's getting old. Milner is not better than him in skill and sheer ability. He's the most skillful English player there is and we have seen what he can do when fit so bashing him for having an injury hit first season in an underachieving team defo won't help his confidence and neither would the paranoid slating he's getting here help. The goal he scored was class, slotting it in the top corner. Whether the skill was meant or not is irrelevant because even if he meant to, he still had a lot to do and he executed perfectly. Give the guy a chance to redeem himself before getting shot of him.

Agree2 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 14:04:32
To Start i do like Adam L, he missed a few sitters in big games last season, but has been injured didn't make the impact everyone wanted and i don't think he will get too much of a chance this season as couts and robbie f will be up there. Problem i have with milner yes a good signing but Can and Hendo in CM for me for sure. I wouldn't put milner above either of those tbh. I know can is young but you see the quality in him, i don't see slowing his progression down for milner as i don't think he offers more than can personally.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 16:39:49
Agree with alistair! Milner for me, was not needed because he offers everything Hendo and Can already do. I do think Lallana will get his chances and I agree, he will need to take them because the window for his step is closing fast. As for missing sitters, Balo, Sterling and Studge missed sitters as well so do we want them bar Sterling, sold as well?

Is he a good influence to have in the squad or has he shown signs of temperament in the past?

I know Ed001 has said he would not be his first choice as an addition to the squad but i was wondering if he is likely to disrupt (ala Suarez and Sterling) what looks like a tight nit unit?

Hey lfc fans.
Now I have a question for any of the eds today and all the fans .

Now in my opinion I don't think Man City are a bigger club than liverpool! In many ways!

So after hearing sterling . 20 years old who is 15 years younger than me and hasn't fully grown up on watching liverpool and those memories in the 80,s + 90,s, and the fact that we took him from qpr so he may not be a lfc fan and most young players seem to only follow what's in the limelight/glamour/billionaire owners. I guess I understand why he said the second city were interested . he was interested and the direction they were going ( I hate that direction part as if lfc are not going in the same-way
So the question is . Are man city a bigger club than liverpool ?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I am not sure why you want to use the word "bigger". If you asked "who will he stand more chance of winning trophies with" then that would be a different matter. I think you should move on - players transfer between clubs all of the time.}

There is nothing shame in accepting facts. City has more chance to win the titles than Liverpool for the next 5 years.a player only cares about his next 5 years than what a club achieved 20 years ago.
We need to keep winning things and should challenge for the title than bringing up excuses how good we were compared to last season.
As supporters our attitude has been poor over the years as there is no urgency for the title at all.

Hi Ed001,

I was wondering what your opinion of Origi was, if you have time to answer?

I can see you've said that buying Benteke is a bit like buying a replacement for him (or words to that effect).

Thanks in advance

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I think he is a very similar player to Benteke, power and pace, but much more mobile and willing to use the power and pace rather than sulking because he didn't get his big move.}

18 Jul 2015 09:28:17
Couple of things:

Do not put anything major into the preseason matches and here is why:

a. The players are probably suffering from jetlag.

b. Weather conditions are terrible (not so much in Australia).

c. Preseason are about getting fit, and adjusting the new players to the managers tactics - it will take some time before it´s proper implementet.

Second point, do we have a Suarez in disguise in Milner (in terms of nutmegs)

Believable1 Unbelievable1

18 Jul 2015 09:54:34
I think Milner is more a combination of Messi and Roanldo.

Seriously, he is a decent player but the hype around him here is way over the top. Re the preseason, the main reason we shouldn't judge the team on its preseason is that the level of the opposition is nothing similar to the PL. If you look at both goals we scored yesterday I doubt if our players will have the freedom with the balls to do what they did yesteday before they scored. Back to my first point, I really doubt if we will see Milner score this kind of goal against PL defenders even once.

Ed002, if you are around. I noticed how you mentioned during conversations about Lacazette, that the Lyon President, Aulas has "mocked" LFC. In the past, LFC have been accused of behaving in an inappropriate manner towards some other clubs (example, JWH's comments about Wenger). Does this sort of behavior, for example from Lyon, arouse animosity between the clubs? I understand Lyon is a difficult club to deal with, and someone I know associated with french football tells me that they are not well liked at all by others in Europe.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - As a club you can lose respect and many mainland European sides, particularly at the highest level, have little respect for a couple of English clubs - including Liverpool. As for Lyon, they have always been difficult to deal with but have on a number of occasions exploited the fact that English clubs are wealthier than most and that has led to players being available for sale with one price for continental sides and another, higher price, for English sides. Aulas mocked Liverpool when asked by an English journalist about Lacazette - and it is true that if there were a bid now by an English side he has a higher price in mind. Up to now the discussions with an English team has met with the "we do not sell our best players" barrier. Liverpool should perhaps also have been a little embarrassed by the words of Piero Ausilio, Inter's Sporting Director, when told a Spanish journalist that Liverpool had made a "funny little joke" with their original €10M offer for Kovacic.

It is also true that the stupid Twitter comment made by JWH regarding an offer from Arsenal did get the shrug of non-surprise when it was discussed in Monaco the following month. It was interesting that there are a couple of other sides also seen to be lacking a certain decorum within the business, there is no point going in to detail, one is Russian and one English.

To compound this, Liverpool has suffered with very poor media communication over several years. The whole Runt situation was mismanaged, Sterling made a joke of himself and the club, Balotelli was always going to be an accident waiting to happen and Rodgers has put his foot in his mouth every time he has opened it. Added to that there was the complete disaster of FSG's choice of Jen Chang. I should not say this (although have alluded to it before), but within factions of the press, the current incumbent, Susan Black is seen as way out her depth.

So, in summary, it doesn't help within the business to act in a manner which is seen as disrespectful.}

18 Jul 2015 09:42:29
Very briefly mentioned but I read something like 'Adam is a decent keeper but Simon is the number one and that's nit changing'
I can't tell if he's giving mignolet confidence or releasing the pressure of him to inprove? I know bogdan was never top class, but surely if you even make mignolet believe there is some competition it is better?

Ed002, thanks very much for sharing that information and insight.
For the club to repeatedly recruit poorly in such key areas seems to indicate poor judgement in the people who are calling the shots on recruitment issues.
Would it be fair to lay a significant part of the responsibility for not fixing these mistakes with Ayres?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - No, I wouldn't say that at all. I can think of only one serious error of judgement from Mr Ayre, so I would certainly not hold him responsible.}

18 Jul 2015 11:30:22
Thanks for the reply Ed002.

Ron, where did I say I was worrying about Lyon? I was interested in knowing if issues such as the ones Ed002 discussed would be a major issue when it comes to clubs dealing with each other. We already Rodgers has caused transfer deals from happening with his biggest weakness, talking, which you have in the past said, is not a major issue with BR.

Though the price is a wee bit high. But i guess we can't have it both ways selling our players for crazy money and them buying others on cheap.

It's about the best deal. Rodgers wanted Benteke and has seemingly got his man. There are no more excuses for the manager, it is time to deliver.

18 Jul 2015 09:04:45
I agree Reet, I really do not know if he will be a success or not; I believe this is because I do not trust the manager and his ability to play to people's strengths / become a bit of a maverick and try something way out there (which is only a problem when he continues with it when it is not working).

AG is right as well - Rodgers can't say the club haven't backed him in the transfer market - although again why we have another 7 players after 9 last year seems ridiculous!

Agree1 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 09:18:05
AG, I'm a bit confused with the "Rodgers wanted Benteke. " There was strong feeling here that, with the way we've gone about business, it is assumed BR is sidelined on transfers, especially after the Firmino signing. So if Benteke doesn't deliver, then BR is at fault, if Firmino turns out to be a star, then "thank God BR was over-ruled"?

Agree3 Disagree3

18 Jul 2015 10:35:14
samp, there are many "fans" who have burnt their bridges with Rodgers this summer. They have to save face, therefore, if we are successful the response is "thank FSG for taking power away from Rodgers as bringing new coaches in". If we fail the response is "it's Rodgers fault for sacking his mate Pascoe".
If signings are successful the response is "well done transfer committee for over ruling Rodgers". If they fail "Rodgers is clueless and has signed too many players".

Agree3 Disagree1

18 Jul 2015 12:15:22
Brendan, the fault lies with you and the fact you're completely out of your depth. Why are you still picking Skittles? You even gave him a new contract for crying out loud!

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 12:32:09
samp: Which part of "Rodgers wanted Benteke" didn't you understand? Are you saying he didn't want Benteke? Apart from Henderson (who he tried to sell to Fulham at first), Lucas (who he has been trying to sell), and Skrtel (who he sees as LFC's best defender), every other LFC player in the current squad and more, was bought in with Rodgers' approval. Would you like to hear their names? I will list them anyway in case your memory is feeling sluggish.

Borini, Allen, Assaidi, Yesil , Sahin, Coutinho, Sturridge, Mignolet, Toure, Ilori, Sakho, Cissokho, Moses, Alberto, Aspas, Moreno, Manquilio, Lovren, Can, Lambert, Lallana, Markovic, Balotelli, Origi, Milner, Ings, Gomez, Bogdan, Firmino and Benteke.

The transfer fee alone for these players, in over 3 years, will amount over £300 million. Are you suggesting after this much money and time, if a player doesn't deliver, who are to blame then? FSG, Rordgers or the fans?

Ron: At no point have a used any of the nonsensical arguments you have used, but I am sure you will find a reason to have digs at other posters and conveniently ignore Rodgers' obvious faults.

Agree1 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 12:33:30
Essex

Stop fooling yourself, once Skrtel is dropped this team ll never concede goals. We did play both Sakho and lovren together and was a disaster.
Moreover Lovren was BR fav pick which he payed double to get him over the line, y would he drop his fav player?

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 13:55:20
EG and BR sorry, Ron, if Lovren is that poor which I disagree with, whose fault is it that such a poor player is at the club? That would be BR so your comment makes no sense. Your attempt to absorb BR of blame when his signings don't pan out is laughable. When many of Rafa's signings failed, Rafa got the blame. When KK's signings failed, he got the blame. So when BR's signings fail, shouldn't he get the blame as well or do diff rules apply to him now?

Found this post written by a villa fan on Benteke,it definitely has given me food for thought after being hesitant about the signing.

I've been a Villa fan for a long time. Benteke is one of the most exciting players I've ever seen here. Having watched every single minute of his Villa career so far, either in person or on screen, I feel many of the comments on here misrepresent him. I'll keep it short. This will either deter you further or help you see what kind of player he is. It's a little difficult to find video samples that exemplify my case, but I gave it my best shot with the limited amount of Villa footage that exists online.
Let's settle a few things first:
Benteke has made 101 appearances in 3 seasons, scoring 49 goals. That's a ratio of 0.485, or just about 1 goal every 2 games. That's fantastic for a team as devoid of creativity and guile as Lambert's Villa were. We have no flair players or playmakers.
Benteke is not injury prone. He sustained a hip flexor injury during the first half of the 13/14 season and an achilles injury from a bad tackle in training just before the World Cup. He struggled to build momentum during that season. Other than that, he has remained injury-free.
Guzan, Vlaar and Delph certainly played their parts, but Benteke was the driving force behind Villa for 3 straight years. In a team of dross and low quality imports, Benteke elevated us to the status of competitors at least.
His agent, Eris Kismet, is pulling the strings. He and Benteke forced the move from Genk to Villa in 2012 and tried to force a transfer to Spurs in summer 2013. Ultimately he agreed to stay, got a big pay rise and all was forgiven but Kismet, as agents do, is always looking for the next big move. You guys know what I'm talking about, considering recent events with Sterling.
Under Lambert, Villa flirted with progressively less exciting playstyles as time went on. At first we were a counter-attacking team. Then we persevered with a rugged long-ball game which limited Benteke. Finally, we settled on a possession-based style with no end product which rendered Benteke useless. Lambert was sacked, Sherwood arrived and Benteke thrived once again.
Now I'll try to dispel a few misconceptions:
"Benteke does not press": This conclusion is drawn from the fact that Villa, under Lambert, never pressed the opposition in their own half. It wasn't our gameplan. In 12/13, for example, we were a primarily a counter-attacking team in a 4-3-3 formation. We sat back with 8 players and lured the opposition to our box, allowing them to commit players forward and thus leaving their defence isolated with the pacey trio of Benteke, Agbonlahor and Weimann to deal with once we broke. The front 3 were never really expected to press. It's not that Benteke doesn't press, it's that he wasn't supposed to. He's not as ferociously fast or tenacious as Suarez, but he's is not a lazy person either. He will press and harry as much as he can, if that's what you ask of him.
"Benteke cannot pass the ball": This assumption must come from his passing completion stats, which are inevitably woeful because he was used as a target man in the 13/14 season by Lambert. I believe, at one point, Guzan to Benteke was the most attempted pass in the league. He invariably wins the aerial duel, but successfully knocking the ball down to a team-mate is far more difficult and could easily skew his stats. In reality, Benteke is a perfectly adequate passer and often makes the kind of incisive forward passes that he himself would benefit from. With better players around him, he would excel.
"Benteke is just a target man": This is an idea again borne out of Lambert's limited tactics. Lambert never used a playmaker or #10. He preferred to bypass the midfield entirely when attacking. Our makeshift wingers - Agbonlahor and Weimann - were industrious and pacey, but not creative. He's a big lanky bastard (I use that term endearingly) and his aerial prowess encourages neutrals to relegate him to the Crouch/Carroll archetype. He is capable of playing that role but, for a big guy, he also shows remarkable close control, ball retention, dribbling skills and in general is pretty good with the ball at his feet.
I don't know how your club intends on playing this season but Benteke is one of the best forwards available right now. £32.5m sounds extortionate but any Villa fan would tell you he's worth it. I wouldn't bother considering any potential "chemistry" with Origi because this isn't FIFA, after all, but Benteke will thrive with good players around him and he's good enough to lead the charge at the top end of the table. My fellow Villa fans will know what I mean when I say it always feels like something is about to happen when Benteke gets on the ball, because it usually does.

my problem with thoughts like that mate is even before he has joined your asking him to adapt his style of play? you start asking players to do things different and they lose what they do best. its a £33 million pound gamble that I think will cost BR his job. and for that reason alone I think its £33 million well spent.

Agree1 Disagree7

18 Jul 2015 08:43:50
I think most fans are quite happy with this signing. And if there are few doubters there is very simple way to shot them up and that is with goals. And not too much time to wait for goals. Only three weeks from today before the premier leage starts - ubeliveable how close it is (does it start particularly early this year?)

I am sure if he has a decent scoring record no one will complain. If he doesn't score or if he gets injured the pressure will mount up, no way around it. I just really hope BR will work a lot with the team on how to produce good service for him and how to adjust our stye accordingly. I guess that in that sense his price and the fact he is almost officialy our talisman going forward will help in communicating the message that the team has to work for him (and of course he has to work for the team espeically in puting pressure on opposition when defending) and be more assists prone.

One area we really have to work on in training is free kicks and corners. We were unbeliveably poor from those last year, our conversion rate from corners and free kicks was imo the lower I remember from many years in Liverpool. And now Gerrad is gone this will not be improved if we don't work on it. We do have Benteke to head coreners and free kicks but we have to practice that.

Agree3 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 09:01:01
And throw-ins, both in opposition half and our half. We easily gave back the ball from throw-ins in our half and didn't win it back up the field.

The main issue will remain the defense IMO. Brendan Rodgers has spend large amounts of his time flippantly dismissing the poor defending.

He'll probably be the best player over there. Robbie Keane scores about a million goals a season in MLS and every time I look at his latest wonderful LA Galaxy goal, it just looks like they're not able mark him.

It's like the defenders are thinking like this:

"He ran in, but stopped, and then dropped into a pocket of space to get the ball. What the hell man? Strikers can do that? What do I do?"

I fully expect Stevie to regularly be given all the time and space he needs to pick off 40-60 yard wonder balls and probably won't be taxed defensively if he's put in a deep area. And if he's up top with Keane, then they probably won't be able to deal with his movement either.

I know everybody has issues with Rodgers, but the reason he was left out last season was not to do with talent, or lack of it in my mindset.

He needs to go.

{Ed001's Note - I don't know mate, I hope he will stay and get regular games, but we seem to be buying a replacement for him already in Benteke. So that suggests he will be going on loan.}

i thought we were looking to sell balotelli, borini and lambert ed? leaving us with origi, ings, sturridge and balotelli then?

{Ed001's Note - we are but they are still there and yet we are still buying another striker.}

I think Sturridge/Benteke as first choice with Ings/Origi backups is a perfect 4 striker setup - sell the rest if we can and let Origi/Ings play as sub in PL and lead in some of the cup/European games. I think Origi might also be useful as a winger too.

Considering sturridge is made of glass I think Origi might get some decent game time, not sure him and benteke will work great together but him and studge should be pretty good.

With Sturridge injured both Origi and Ings will bear a huge burden to replicate Sturridge's goalscoring prowess.Origi struggled last season when put in a similar situation due to lack of strikers and creativity in team.In the latter stages he started performing well when a new player took complete responsiblity of creativity in team.So with Benteke as our main striker it will allow both Origi and Ings to adjust and develop their game. But as Ed said

But as Ed said Origi was an unnecessary signing when we have Jerome Sinclair.

Origi has huge huge potential. Give him a proper run of games and he will be unstoppable.
