If a player signs only for a club that guarantees first team football and isn't up for a fight for his place Liverpool is not the place for him.

Is anyone watching the Tottenham game?

I'd drop Johnson for Yedlin from what I've seen.

Believable5 Unbelievable2

It's a preseason friendly, really not much of an indicator at all.

Agree2 Disagree1

Big Fan of Yedlin - Him and Moreno next year as our full backs would offer so much pace up the flanks

Hi Eds i'm a bit worried about some of the transfers, I think we need at least on big signing 30+ mil to show that we really want to win the league and also to bring more quality into our side. Transfers like Lamber, Remy and Markovic are really just to cover our backs and let other players rest since we have more games, how are we going to get remotely close to winning the league without buying a big signing to replace Suarez who of course was the best player in the league and possibly the world last year, even when we had him we didn't win. Also we have made no defensive signings yet unless you count can who can play full back. Do you think we will make a marquee signing? and do you think we will challenge to win the league this year. I know its still relatively early on in the transfer window but I just want to know your thoughts.

Thanks :)

Believable7 Unbelievable12

{Ed002's Note - So who will be impressed by Liverpool by simply wasting money for no apparent reason? Would another £30M of debt help the club in any way?}

We wouldn't be wasting money if it was a solid signing and it would definately help but it just depends who it was.

Agree4 Disagree7

The club are not looking to replace Suarez

Via tactics, and re shaping the team, the club are looking to replace the goals he scored

We have bought Lallana, lambert and markovic, on top of the attacking talent we already have plus the possibility of another striker up front, and Ibe, suso and texeira coming into the squad

How hard can it be to understand?

Do you want Ronaldo and messi on the bench?

Agree7 Disagree5

You don't need to spend huge amounts of money to win the league, perform well or show the clubs ambition. it would just be to appease a portion of our fans.

remy will be a great signing for what he costs

Agree7 Disagree0

Would Fellaini or Anderson make you happy, Frostistotle? How about Andy Carroll?

Agree3 Disagree5

What is with you people and the so-called "big signings"? The eds are saying that lfc no longer does that anymore. We are in debt and need to reign in the spending but for some reason, some of you are too thick to understand this simple point. We didn`t have a big name signing last year and we almost won the league by teamwrk, deterination and a fluid system of play that terrorrized the whole of England. We were close to administration BECAUSE of these big names on big wages who didn`t give a hoot about playing for the team and fans and they all jumped ship at the first opportunity. I trust the ownersand BR to never put us in a position of liquidation again. If you want big names, I suggest u stop supporting LFC because that will NEVER happen. We will only spend big money if the player is worth it like Sanchez was when we were in for him.

Agree8 Disagree11

Guess we could have paid £30M for Lambert, £45M for Lallana, and maybe £25M for Can to satisfy your desire for big spending.

Agree5 Disagree4

My post wasnt about me wanting us to spend a lot of money it was about us bringing in someone to try and score goals like suarez did and I know we aren't going to find a suarez replacement because he was a fantastic player. But I don't think lambert and remy are going to supply us with the goals we need and will be missing from next season. If we can found someone for cheap and can score lots of goals that's great. But we all know they cost a lot of money and in my opinion remy or lambert isn't a good enough replacement. :)

Agree7 Disagree5

Also I don't appreciate all of this hate, calling me thick and telling me to stop supporting LFC, this is my opinion and if you don't agree then that's fine but there is really no need to be rude :/

Agree13 Disagree3

20 Jul 2014 00:13:35
Everyone is being rude because the post was stupid. You didn't even suggest who to buy it was basically let's piss away 30 million on a player because the ones we bought already are not good enough because they didn't cost over 30 million.

Agree5 Disagree2

20 Jul 2014 00:33:32
We don't need any big name signing if remy pulls his wait and changes his attitude he could be a good peice of business he's been signed just to keep sturridge on his toes he can't play 2 full games a week sturridge is going to be our main guy let's see if he can handle it I think he can be better than sourez hrs matured at Liverpool he's acting like sterlings big brother which 2 years ago he he needed we have more than enough attacking options now all we need is a good lb and if lovren comes in more than happy we don't need any more mid sterling will be better this year and Ibe Is going to surprise a lot of people expect him to get a lot of game time towards the back end of the season he's the next big thing to come through our academy. Cheers guys great site love to know what you all think .

Agree2 Disagree0

To be honest, we don't really need someone like Suarez, we just need someone who's going to put the ball in the net when it comes to them. The rest of the team do the work, build-up wise, its the finishing that let's us down the majority of the time. may I also remind you that our win percentage was higher without Suarez last year, Ok, less goals and excitement, I admit, but still got the results. We just need the right player for the system, not the right system for the player.

Agree1 Disagree0

Frostistotle, I agree with you. I think lots of reds have considered the success of some of our more expensive signings (Carroll, Downing) have been very poor compared with some gems we've found on the cheap (Sturridge, Coutinho), but are forgetting the reasons players are worth more generally are because they're good players, in the same way talented players only go on the cheap when they've got little left on their contract or they aren't featuring often enough either for their satisfaction or for the club's economic sense.
We overpaid for Carroll but we would have had to overpay for whoever we were going to replace Torres with as there was barely a day left of the window and everyone knew how much cash we had to spend.
If we were to buy Reus somehow, I'm 95% sure he would be a worthwhile investment, same with Griezmann and to an extent Benzema.
All our fans though are terrified that we spend this £45million, Reus scores a couple, picks up a lengthy injury and comes back half the player he ever was, we fail to make the Champions League places and suddenly we are once again staring bankruptcy in the face.
But it could go the other way. Reus could hit 25 goals, pick up the player of the year title, we win the league, FA cup and reach the Semi-Finals of the Champions League and suddenly Reus has brought £100million into the club and is worth >£60million.
It's always a risk paying a lot of money for any commodity, in both the football industry and the real world.
I hope we do make a top signing because I believe without another star in the side we won't go on to win the Premier League, and possibly miss out on top four.
But in buying Markovic, Emre Can and the like, Brendan has set us up so we are a side that will improve and, hopefully, if we were to miss out on top four we would have a stronger team for the following season without having to heavily invest like United are this summer.
I'd love a big signing, I really would, but there's got to come a point where we accept whatever Brendan wants.
If Rodgers wants Reus, he should be backed- we have the money.
But if Brendan believes we can continue to improve without spending too heavily on a new star then so be it.
Woah I need a word count on this!

Agree2 Disagree3

Haha I wish I had never written that post, its my opinion if i'm wrong i'm wrong we will see how the season folds out. LFC is a family and I don't get why fellow supporters are having a go at me for my opinion, am I not entitled to have one?

Agree2 Disagree1

You're absolutely allowed your opinion, but it might be helpful if you specify who specifically you think we need at £30M+ as at least that would be a basis for discussion. Saying just spend money in someone is a bit pointless.

Agree1 Disagree0

Frost, I did not mean to call you thick or insensitive. However, you have to understand that big names don`t always work out as we have all found out in the recent past (Downing, Carroll, and even Adam. In fact, Hendo has only begun to come on). We wanted Sanchez at 30m because he is the closet thing on the market to Suarez BUT he chose Arsenal. Chelsea bought Willian for 30m and Oscar for 25m and IMO for those amounts, they are completely useless. Give me Coutinho and Sterling anyday for a fraction of those prices. If BR don`t think we need a big name, then I trust hi and I suggest you start giving him the benefit of the doubt instead of getting caught up in the media circus. Besides, the Suarez you speak of was NOT a big name when we got him. He was a very good player who still needed 4 chances to score a goal. It was BR thru his tactical acumen and astute man management, that literally BUILT the Suarez we know today by not only set up the whole team to play to his strengths but by also getting Suarez to believe, in spite of his travails on and of the field, that he can be the best finisher in the PL and arguably the best player in the world. The Suarez that terrorized England at the WC was noy built by Tabarez. BR built that lethal finisher that sent England packing just like he built Sterling, built Sturridge, built Henderson, reinvented Gerrard, took a 7th placed team to within a whisker of the PL and got us back into the CL all by daring to play attacking football regardless of the circumstances, and so on and on. BR has shown that he can hack it hence, he is the reigning manager of the year. If you cannot trust BR after all he as achieved in such a short time then bro, I don`t know what else to tell you than to go support another team because frankly, I have run out of options.

Agree3 Disagree0

Come on Ed it doesn't matter if the signing is any good, its about the message it sends to other teams.
"Got any sh"& players we can spend 30million on"

Agree1 Disagree1

I'd go for a 60 million signing, he would be twice the player?

Agree2 Disagree0

You should really phrase your post better then. all you said is that we should sign a player for 30 mill to show intent which is ludacris and naive. We bought lalanna and markovic both 20 mill plus if we had spent 40 mill plus on each would you be happier?

I think you dug yourself into a hole hadn't read any of the 50 posts with people saying the same nonsense down the page and then got a little embarrassed. but as I said you can say all you like but your original post was ridiculous and any like it will receive abuse!

Agree1 Disagree0

But spud we've got the Suarez money and our magical bottomless pit of gold. sure we may as well buy all the players in the world that cost 30 mill plus we can get our hands on then we'll win everything!

Agree0 Disagree0

Quote from John Henry
'We will build and grow from within, buy prudently and cleverly and never again waste resources on inflated transfer fees and unrealistic wages. We have no fear of spending and competing with the very best but we will not overpay for players.'

Why do people not want Remy at Liverpool? He scored 14 goals in 29 games at an average PL team. Imagine what he can do when he has more chances in games!

Believable6 Unbelievable3

Attitude. Wages. A bit one dimensional. Concerns over whether he'll throw a tantrum if he's not in the starting 11.

Agree5 Disagree2

I`ve known Remy since he was in the academy at Lyon and he was the closest thing to Thierry Henry according to the then french media. He was a big succes at Marseilles but I think he got caught up w/ the wrong crowd and that might have led to some bad decisions. IMO, he`s still a very good player and based on his stats at newcastle last yr, he still has goals in him. He is quick, can play on the wings and as a CF and can still find the net. He just needs to focus and make better decisions on and off the field. I think if anyone can get the best out of him, BR can. Studge had the sae bad rap like Remy does now and look what BR has turned him into. Remy has the opportunity to be just as good if not better than studge BUT it is up to him and ONLY up to him.

Agree3 Disagree1

RDL are they your own opinions, and are they grounded in any facts, or just the re-gurgitated thoughts and perceptions of certain eds and poster's on here at the moment.

I remember hearing similar guff on here before we signed Sturridge. Give the guy a chance FFS.

Agree1 Disagree2

The poster asked why people don't want Remy, those are some the reasons- I never said I shared them as, for me, I see the logic in the move even if I'm not particularly in love with the idea.

And I wouldn't compare Remy and Sturridge at all. Many people thought (and still foolishly think) Sturridge was greedy/selfish on the ball and on the pitch, but I don't recall anyone ever questioning his off-field activities or his attitude in the dressing room.

Agree1 Disagree0

You`re wrong, RDL. You are entitled to your opinion BUT I disagree with oyu on certain issues. A lot of fans question and still question Dan`s attitude on or off the field. especially after the spat he had w/ Suarez during the Everton route. Those who think Remy is greedy and all that are just beieving the whole media circus. Remy might have caused that on his own and has defo made his mistakes. However like Sturridge, he has a chance to redeem himself at the biggest club he`ll ever play at w/ a manager who will develop him instead of an incompetent half-wit like Pardew. His ability is still there and the boy`s talent is undeniable. He just need sto bring it together and I personally will support him because if he succeeds, LFC suceeds and that should be the only thing that matters.

Agree2 Disagree1

19 Jul 2014 21:34:49
I will be absolutely gutted if the Borini transfer doesn't go through, £14 million is a bonkers sum of money and if it doesn't happen I will lay the blame squarely at the feet of Rogers. If he won't go then leave him with kids WTF was he doing playing him today. I am not happy with the manager at all ATM.

Believable4 Unbelievable17

If he is holding out for a return to italy can you imagine what the italian teams will offer 7 mill tops or a loan with right to buy which they won't take up I think ridgers needs to put arm round shoulder tell him he will be 5th choice and convince him sunderland is the right move for him the Sunderland fans really want him too he could be a hero up there

Agree5 Disagree0

Not sure why you are blaming the manager on what is now a personal choice for the player. Who by the way has handled him self with dignity and respect in his time with us.

C

Agree9 Disagree0

Therein lies the hypocrisy of a lot of supporters. If a player is pushing to move to another club, he's a traitor and a turncoat (even if the offer is a good one).
If the player won't leave the club when there is a good offer, there is an outrage. Unless, he is a fan favorite like Danny Agger.
So, it seems it is ok to leave the club as long as you're seen to be surplus to requirements or a really cool guy, otherwise show us the money instead of the loyalty.

Agree14 Disagree0

I agree Waro, Rodgers shouldn't have played Borini today in case he got injured unless Borini told him he wasn't going anywhere( as reports suggest tonight). However for that type of dough if I was Rodgers I'd say to Borini"look, we are still going to sign Remy (or another striker) so you may aswell go". The only danger would be if Borini said ok, I'll sit on my arse for 2 years and go on a free and get a huge signing on fee.

Agree1 Disagree1

19 Jul 2014 23:35:22
I don't really see what Rodgers has done wrong here.

The odds that playing against Preston influenced Borini's decision are about nil. Can't imagine any footballer thinking: "Wow I played 60 minutes of our first pre-season game where 10 members of our squad weren't available, the gaffer must have plans for me!"

As for 'he could have been injured', his hamstring could've gone in training either, couldn't it? Do we take a player out of training and pack him in cotton wool and bubblewrap whenever there's a transfer bid?

If the rumours are true and Borini doesn't want to go to Sunderland and is prepared to play chicken with us and hold out for a move to alternative club, well here's reality: We can't force Borini to sign a contract with Sunderland. I'd imagine the fact that we've accepted a bid for him, signed a striker, two attacking midfielders and are continually linked to more has probably made the point to Borini that we don't need him. And if that's not enough, he's probably been told as much. You don't say to a player "yeah, I need you, but I'll accept this bid from Sunderland anyway".

I suppose we could leave him behind on our US trip, but let's actually see what happens with that before we hammer the manager for it.

Agree0 Disagree0

How is it Rodgers' fault if Borini wants to stay and fight for a spot? Unless you're saying it's admirable how Rodgers instills such faith in the players that they're willing to do anything to be a part if our squad, it makes no sense to me to be heaved off about the situation.

Agree2 Disagree0

AC Milan might be the perfect move for Borini and they could have Inzaghi manage Italy's new Inzaghi.

But, if Borini wants to stay the club can't (and due to Rodgers relationship with him) won't force him out. The club didn't flock him around trying to sell him, rather just received a fee that couldn't be refused.

Remy is still available for the same fee and we still have money to spend, I don't see any reason not to still pursue a deal for Remy.

Agree0 Disagree0

Come on Waro, it can't be all Brendan's fault.
FSG and Ian Ayre must take their share of the blame.

Agree1 Disagree0

Are we actually riping a guy here who have said " I want to stay and prove myself and become a success with LFC" 1 minute people are shouting - We want players who want to put our shirt on and the next annoyed they want too - Little confused - And as for i'm not happy with BR - i'd imagine if Borini turned and had scored 3 or 4 goals i'm sure this would be a different post?

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jul 2014 20:54:21
On Saturday evening, Italian transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio has revealed that Fabio Borini has rejected a Sunderland return and is set to hold out at Anfield for a better move.

Di Marzio has an almost faultless record when it comes to transfer news and he has revealed that Borini does not want to return to Sunderland.

The 23-year-old former Chelsea forward has told Brendan Rodgers that he wishes to stay at Anfield and is happy to see out the remaining two years of his contract at Liverpool.

Believable4 Unbelievable1

Good for him. He signed a contract with us and wants to see it out. He will be a decent squad player

Agree0 Disagree1

Well if he wants to be 3rd or 4th choice then that is his choice.

Agree0 Disagree2

Send him back on loan to Sunderland.

Ibe has been superb in these 2 games. Hope he keeps it up he could turn world class if he works as hard as Sterling has (not to say Sterling is, yet anyway)

Believable10 Unbelievable0

Ibe reminds me of john barnes with his dribbles and ball control if he turns out to be half as good as john barnes he will be a grwat player hope he gets game time with us or on loan to further his development

Agree1 Disagree0

He's a talent alright but is not ready for the first team yet in my view. He gives the ball away too often and his decision making is pretty poor still so he would benefit from a full season on loan where he plays all year. Then BR can really help him on.

Agree0 Disagree0

I disagree Giblet; Ibe drives forward with power and is v direct; Barnes was an elegant player; who could drift round players with ease.

I've got high hopes for Ibe but I do feel a loan would be beneficial; playeing 40-50 games against Championship players would be a good learning curve IMO.

Hi eds
Just seen on ssn web site that Lille forward soloman kalou o open to a Liverpool move but Lille are weighting to see what happens about the origi deal first
If soloman kalou was a possible deal I would hope he isn't the class of player we are looking for no disrespect to kalou but I'm hoping for bigger and better players to come in
Whats your thoughts eds? Thanks

Believable5 Unbelievable0

Kalou should stay well away from Anfield because he`s not worth the trouble. His best days ar WAY behind him.

Agree2 Disagree0

He was never a good player

Agree0 Disagree2

Get out there and abuse him if you are not just trolling. Some sort of hate campaign from Liverpool supporters - start it up. Spew your hate. I know he is not a Liverpool player, but show him what it would be like if he were.}

I don`t know which Ed this is BUT I will tell him/her that I don`t hate anyone and don`t have a hateful bone in my body because to me, hate is too strong a word to be used in an arena of life as trivial as a football pitch. Having said that, I don`t want Kalou here based on the fact that IMO, his best days are well behind him and he`s not good enough for what we are trying to achieve. Whether he`s a good player or not doesn`t matter to me because I`ve never cared for him as a player since his Chelsea days. My not wanting him here is based ONLY on football reasons and not on hatred or any of that nonsense you speak of. Clear? Good!

Agree2 Disagree0

Wouldn't get a game at LFC. Not good enough.

Remy over borini is a no brained simple as that!

If we had stuck with Borini, Lambert and Studge there would of been all kinds of moaning! But obviously we have changed it and bang still more moaning.

Facts we only need 3 strikers, Markovic is an option up top! We lost Suarez 31 goals. Sturridge hope 20, Lambert 10 and Remy 15-20, can you honestly say hand on heart Borini would of been in the 15-20 bracket? Remember he doesn't get penatlies or free kicks at Liverpool (I'm not sure of the numbers but I know he had a few pens)

And the reason we took Remy over someone else is the fact of the initial fee (I don't care about signing on fees/agent fees all that bull) just the fee in the paper and on ssn. Studge is the main man in a 4-3-3 formstion, if we had got a 20 mil (bony for example) there is more pressure to play him from fans and owners due to the price but with only playing one up top do we then drop Sturridge, NO! but Remy at 8.5mil no pressure to play and when he bangs 15+ goals brendan will be praised for his choice and we will be laffin at Chelski for paying 30 mil for Costa!

Remy = Success
Borini = Not ready and needs games which we can't give! Hopefully he goes and gets his 30+ games and becomes a superstar but unfortunately we couldn't have give him the development he needs!

Oh and last thing about Remy only having pace and a good finish (isnt that a strikers main attribute?) And we need pace up top, I'll delve into it a little bit. If for example we play with a slow front man, opposition teams can push up tight and close the space for attacking mids to play in and therefor drive you to long balls because you can't control the posesstion (look at Bayern with madzukic under pep, hense why he played Muller up top and has bought lewondowski) but if you put pace up top the defenders have to drop off so they don't get caught out (like Everton did at anfield, playing the high line vs studge and sterling haha) so and then we have space to play the ball around and with the new quality of Lallana and Markovic on the ball we will be a force!

And if Sturridge got injured as always we would have no pace up top, so with Remy we have that (i don't care if he doesn't move from the defenders side) as long as he is ready to turn, run and finish when one of our players finds him! Its no good having 11 behind the ball, were not Chelski reds, WE ARE LIVERPOOL!

Well I don't feel sorry for Borini.

I don't feel sorry for a player who would not be a starter for LFC getting a move to another premier league side.

I don't feel sorry for a player bagging another big signing on fee
I don't feel sorry for a lad in his 20's getting paid millions for playing football.

There are others more deserving of sympathy.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

The world of football and reality are very different, the "sympathy" for Borini is within the context of the footballing world. You know this.

Agree3 Disagree0

Spot on Seano. Being wealthy doesn't mean you are never deserving of any sympathy and understanding (not that I'd know)

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree, Seano. I felt for the guy today. He made some fantastic runs but is never given the pass. He might have scored a few today with better supply and was clearly frustrated but kept his professionalism

Agree0 Disagree0

So the sympathy is deserved for what reason?

Is it because he makes fantastic runs and doesn't get a pass? Lol

Hey eds

If we got Remy for 8.5 as reported that is very nice. Do you know if his clause was 8.5 or just permission to talk to champion league teams?

Also Lambert played for us as a kid so is he classed as a home grown club player for the champions league?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Eds fellow reds, there's a lot of people saying loan ibe out this season .we did that last year to birmingham and they didn't play him better of to keep him at ANFIELD . At least we controll his playing time

Believable0 Unbelievable2

He won't get a game here at the moment and that's what he needs more than anything. It's hard to picture a match day 18 where he can even make the bench unless we seriously start selling a lot of players.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not the best logic there Lewis.

Ibe was loaned out to the wrong side last season. With the right side, he can flourish, like Wisdom.

If he stays at LFC next season, he will not be making many appearances.

Agree0 Disagree0

Anyone think Derby may be a good fit for him?

It might be my memory but I was of the believe McClaren is a v good coach (just not as good manager); maybe also at that level it will allow him to hone his decision making for an assault on the premiership the following year.

Agree0 Disagree0

Think you are quite correct Hoola would not be the worst scenario in the world is Ibe went on loan at Derby for a season.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

The two aren't connected IMO.
We bought him for 10 and sold him for 14. It didn't work out for club or player. But good business.
A space opened up with Borini's departure that was filled by a decent player [in Remy] and at a fairly reasonable price.

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - The numbers are wrong and you have not included a currency. Why bother with this.}

He does seem a nice guy but from what I have seen of him play he just isn't quite good enough for us.

He only scored 10 goals for Sunderland last season, and some of them were penalties.

Someone like Remy or Bony look a lot more threatening with their pace and power, and in some ways their selfish nature makes them better goal scorers.

I think it will be the best solution for both sides if we get 14 million for him, and he gets to play regularly in a team that will play to his strengths.

Cant ever question his commitment and attitude to the team which is rare these days.

Agree0 Disagree0

I said the same Madmax.
Perhaps the first time I can't see the benefit of the moves, apart from possibly saving a bit of money?

Borini seemed a class bloke and for what he lacked in ability he made up for with his commitment and effort. Good luck to him.

Attacking wise we have bought very well. Lambert he.remains a question mark but I will back him. Can is an excellent midfielder.
Defensivly if we buy lovren who is a top CB.
We could be devastating. What makes Liverpool so strong.is not individuals but our play. Our style of play makes us the most devastating in the PL. If lovren is bought and a quailty LB, we will create damage. Will we win the PL? IMO we will fall short however.United fans hoping Liverpool to drop out of the top 4, its not happening, look elsewhere

I don't see where the thinking is here. Now Remy? Still Shopping in the Bargain basement of football when we've secured Champions League!? We could attract every single one of these when we was finishing 7th. Where's the world class players to replace the best striker on the planet we've just sold?

Believable8 Unbelievable5

IMO maybe Rodgers is thinking that even without Suarez his cheaper reinforcements will produce enough goals as scoring wasn't the problem, leaving more money for the defence?

'World class' players require either huge salaries and/or a team consistently in the CL. Many clubs can provide both, some clubs can provide one or the other, we (at the moment) can't claim either.

I've been a big fan of suso since he broke into the first team, I was going to get his name on the back of my shirt this season when he came back from loan but started to read about us using him in deals etc

Do you know if we did try to offload him or what Brendan's plans are for him, or your personal opinion on what will happen for him this season?

Good to see Coates play today, and I'd be happy if he stayed as I think he has more to offer than Skrtel, Agger, and Toure. Lloyd Jones looks a good prospect too. I think if we sign Lovren then we could afford to let Toure, Agger, and Skrtel go which would leave Sakho and Lovren first choice with Ilori, Kelly, Coates and Jones as reserve. Of course Coates is more less gone but, as I said, I'd like him to stay. And Agger leaving would be sad as he has shown loyalty but keeping him for that reason would be a mistake.

Believable3 Unbelievable8

Coates is just too slow to play in our system. He can improve on his dodgy positioning, rash tackling and general lack of interest, but he will still be too slow.

It's time for him to move on, Kelly and Wisdom are much better options at CB and his wages aren't exactly tiny.

Agree1 Disagree1

19 Jul 2014 19:18:14
Coates has been here under 2 managers for 3 years and has played 12 PL games for LFC.

He i, unfortunately, not at the level of Skrtel or Toure, let alone Agger.

Agree1 Disagree1

I think Coates would do well in the Italian League; he wants (based upon previous outings in the 1st team) too much time on the ball and is a tad slow.

Nothing against the guy and who can forget the 18 yard overhead kick against QPR!

Agree0 Disagree0

I have said it from day 1, Coates is our best bet for countering lanky strikers and route 1 play in general once BR realises it he will see the squad value of Coates and keep him for a rainy day.

Hi Eds

I know these are very old news now but still be happy to get your view on that. I saw an interview with BR saying Sanchez went to Arsenal becuase he wanted to live in London. I understand from what he said that had he wanted to come to LFC we would have taking him for the same fee. This kind of contradict the current percpetion of everyone here (including myself, I have to admit) that 'big names' which cost a lot of money (say above 25M) are out of question for us

Agree4 Disagree0

19 Jul 2014 17:04:03
The old U21s who has been out on loan still play so well together. (plus rossiter, ibe, peterson, stewart, coates, jones).

Good goals from Suso and Peterson, excellent game and double assists from Ibe, Rossiter also played really well looked much shaper than Lucas. I wonder if Peterson could have included himself in the Tour, though we already have 29 outfield players going, definitely think he should have gone ahead of Phillips.

Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

19 Jul 2014 18:26:13
Peterson has been included in the Tour of USA in place of Borini.

Agree3 Disagree0

You're bang on with Peterson, in truth I know absolutely nothing about Phillips but how de-motivating it must be to score 2 goals in your first 2 appearances for the first team, to then be told that a reasonably unheard of player 2 or more years younger is going ahead of you plus others who don't realistically look like making it at LFC. Hopefully BR & co re-consider a little.

like you said, I think Suso, Rossiter & Ibe were excellent. Ibe still a little wasteful on occasions but it's certainly not a surprise for an 18 year old and his vast level of quality is there for all to see. I'm really hoping both Suso & Ibe can feature for the side next year.

Agree0 Disagree0

My favorite bit about Peterson is the lad busts a gut to close down everything, however fruitless the attempt and even if it's only a friendly. Looks like one trying his best to force his way into the lineup which I massively appreciate.

Made up for Suso and his goal.took it really well on the left peg, looked lively all game

Surely Ibe is knocking at the door, his talent and ability can't be questioned, but he also has a good build on him too for a young lad and won't get knocked off the ball easily in the prem, full of confidence, pacy, 2 footed and ready to step up the plate IMO

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - last I heard a decision was going to be made on him during preseason. Thinking was a loan move though. I do think he has potential, but he needs to improve his final ball.}

19 Jul 2014 18:28:26
Peterson was used as a striker towards the end of last season for the U-21's and he certainly has done well in the pre-season tour so far. He will be going to the States and I suspect a decision will be made on him after the Tour.

Preston 1-2 Liverpool.

Impressed with:

Jones - Commanded the area well and made a couple of good saves. Looked solid generally.
Lucas - Grew into the game and was generally tidy on the ball. Put in a couple of decent tackles. Probably not at his best still though.
Ibe - Was a threat from the minute he came on with his running and set up both goals. Assist for Petersen was top quality. Both the skill to squeeze past on the touchline and the composure to spot and pick out Petersen. One criticism is that he had a good chance in the first half and didn't put it away.
Suso - Constantly looked to create things and took his goal really well.

Newbies:

Can - Looked quite decent for 20 minutes before he went off. Completed his passes, tried to look forward when he could (he wasn't the DM btw, Lucas was), showed he's prepared to carry the ball with a powerful run when space opened up, and put in one very good tackle coming in from the side and cleanly dispossessing the player.
Lambert - Didn't get a lot of service because we didn't really play all that well first half. That said, he did go looking for the ball rather than sit in the penalty area and sulk. Probably the only time he got a good ball at the edge of the area, he was able to set up a chance for Ibe with good strength to hold off the defender and a neat reverse pass.

Overall:
Didn't play well in the first half, especially before Ibe came on. Lucas, Allen and Can retained the ball okay, but we had no penetration. Coutinho kept having to drop deep to collect the ball and then didn't really have an outlet for a forward pass when he did. Ibe gave us more of a threat when he came on, and Coutinho was better when he dropped into Can's position and was able to get on the ball facing Preston more easily, and with 3 men ahead of him rather than 2.

Better in the second half, the kids who came on played some neat stuff together, and we scored two good goals. Didn't exactly dominate them either though.

Hey, Ed001
I'm not sure if I'm completely mistaken but I think I vaguely remember you saying a couple of years ago that in Glen Johnsons contract it said that if he was fit with no injury that he had to start and in his prepared position at right-back. Although I don't know how strict it was as at the time he was filling in at left-back due to injuries and Kelly was starting at right-back.
If I'm mistaken then apologies but if this was the case is it still in his contract and could prevent Flanagan taking over as first choice right back.
Thanks

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - he can be asked to play anywhere, but it was in his contract he had to be in the team when fit. I assumed it was removed when he signed a new contract, but I don't know if it was.}

N.I_Red, Ed001
I don't know who agreed to this clause but it sounds unbelievable that someone could actually demand this be inserted into his contract. Should of been told to 'do one' when this was mentioned!
Maybe that clears a few thing up with why he never got dropped last season on the back of regular poor performances. I personally found it baffling that he continually got rewarded with a starting place when his performances last season did not deserve it.
I'm not trying to have a go at him personally but he was not up to the level required or the level he has previously performed to.

Is it something more common on the continent or just a one off?
Seems absolutely absurd to me to allow this. Form should be the only means of assuring your position in the team.

Got to say, if we can bring them through right and get them enough experience, the future looks really bright for us in an attacking sense, with Suso, Ibe, Sterling, Peterson and old man Coutinho. I know it's only pre season but Ibe and Suso have been impressive. Hopefully Ibe will get a loan and Suso can be integrated into the first team. We have a great crop of young players coming through, let's hope Brendan has the managerial chops to bring them through

Believable0 Unbelievable1

Strangely until the last 20 mins or so Ibe was making a lot of mistakes or his decision making wasn't great. However fair play for keeping at it got to love that determination.

I was v impressed by Rossiter again; a couple of devenders were out of position and he was there to stop the attack; crunching tackle and keeping it simple - hard to believe he is only 17. Normally young players are asked to play in different wider positions due to their inexperience but he looked the part I have to say.

19 Jul 2014 18:34:26

Remy, Lambert, Markovic, Lallana and Can in for Suarez, Borini, Alberto and Aspas.

Yes, quite happy with the deals so far.

LFC don't need quantity in defense, just quality. 1xLB and 1xCB.

A fair few defenders will be leaving too, starting with Andre Wisdom, who will join West Brom on loan for the year.

Agree0 Disagree0

Pretty happy yes. Lallana is a really exciting signing. What do you make of Herrera or Shaw and what are your thoughts for next season?

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jul 2014 16:06:33
Not entirely surprised about our bid/fee for Remy but must admit that I didn't see us going for him.
Weird one for me, how is Borini who struggled settling in to the league worth £14m when Remy who was flying is going for closer to £8m. Not complaining, think Remy is a good natural finisher, lots of strength and pace, let's hope Rodgers can influence the Frenchman in a similar way to Sturridge.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

Wages would be a part of it. To be honest, I'm not sure anyone apart from Sunderland where the lad seems quite well-liked would have been willing to pay that amount.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would imagine the difference in valuation is a combination of factors including Remy's 4 years older, Remy will demand higher wages and signing on fee, and perhaps other reasons like work rate and the position of the selling club

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jul 2014 15:50:54
FORWARD LINE:
RWs: Sterling, Ibe
By next February, Real Madrid will be sniffing around Sterling who by this time will be commanding a £60million price tag. For me, he is the key to our season and has the potential to be one of the best players in the league next season. A world beater. Ibe also will see some game time against cup opposition.

CFs: Sturridge, Remy, Lambert
Sturridge is world class. Simple as that. He will step up to the plate and Remy and Lambert are terrific options for when things need to be shaken up. The Remy signing will give us the opportunity to revert to two up top if we need to- Sturridge can work with either of those up front. Exciting.

LWs: Markovic, Peterson
Markovic will hopefully set the league alight and for me he has all the attributes needed to succeed. Unlikely to see Peterson feature as both Coutinho and Lallana can play out wide. Options-a-plenty.

MIDFIELD

DMs: Gerrard, Can, Brannagan
Gerrard will feature obviously a lot more than Can will but I think we will see a lot of Can coming on at 60 mins, allowing Gerrard to play at a high intensity for 60 as opposed to struggling for the last 30-40. Excited about Can- he will be some player I think.

CMs: Henderson, Lallana, Coutinho, Allen, Texeira, Canos
I expect Henderson to play every minute of every game if he's fit and happy- absolutely integral to everything Liverpool do. Lallana and Coutinho will rotate which is exciting, with both offering very different things. Allen will come on to sure up games and Texeira will break through in the cups.

Believable1 Unbelievable4

What I see the situation being like by Spetember 2nd:

BACKLINE

GKs: Mignolet, Reina, Jones
I see Reina staying - not because he wants to fight for his place but because no one wants to match his wages. If we can persuade him to take a small wage hit, I see him being a real asset in providing competition to Mignolet.

RBs: Flanagan, Johnson, McLaughlin
Flanagan to start for me. See him as a really solid player who can really stake his claim in Europe this season. Johnson to play against weaker opposition to exploit defensive frailties.

CBs: Lovren, Sakho, Skrtel, Ilori, Kelly, Toure
Lovren for me would make the ideal partner for Sakho. Pair up the classy, swashbuckling style of Lovren with the brute force of Sakho. Both in my eyes would be terrific at starting counter attacks. Skrtel and Ilori are viable options, and I expect Kelly to feature in cup competitions.

LB: Moreno, Smith, Enrique
I fully expect us to sign Moreno and if/when we do, he will start every game he is fit for. A huge upgrade on anything we have now. Smith would be ahead of Enrique for me in pecking order.

Believable2 Unbelievable3

Madness to keep Skrtel and Toure but get rid of Agger, strongly disagree.

Hello Eds
Is it true that Casillas is considering free transfer to the Epl after talks with Madrid?
If so I think he stand a better chance @ Liverpool than @ arsenal considering the fact that pepe is leaving and mignolet is still adjusting
He could provide lots of experience for the defence and it would be a chance for him to regain his throne as world best goalie. He wouldn't ask for too much wages too

Believable0 Unbelievable3

{Ed001's Note - he never had that throne, he has always been dodgy.}

Also Can had just been pulled off in the friendly, looked to settle well from the 20 minutes I saw! Hopefully just a precaution! Shaky start though defensively.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Ha think you can add Preston North End to that list, its taking us a while to go up a gear, tho, it must feel like a cup final to them .

Agree1 Disagree0

Our defence was shakey throughout that game until Coates and Lloyd-Jones came on. Very dodgy until that point, Lucas looked really tired as well which didn't help. Peoples over complicating remy. Personally i.hope his wages have been seriously reduced. However, goals win games. He knows where the net is, borini didn't simply. Quailty addition who will eat up chances. 20goal man imo and probably from the bench. Not the best footballer but a quailty forward

Big Al,

Remy or Lacazzate?

Agree0 Disagree1

^if your asking which one I would have preffered it would be lacazette, a betterfootballer, 4years younger and very good finisher whilst also on very low wages far less than Remy's. However remy is proven in the PL. Has cost about half of what lacazette would have and scored 14 goals in 26 appearances for a poor Newcastle team. Sort out his attitude he is a very good signing IMO

Agree3 Disagree0

Remy is cheaper (from a transfer fee perspective) and has Premier League experience though is older and apparently carries a poor attitude with him. Difficult to decide but our money is definitely limited, would say Remy on that basis alone (if his transfer fee and wages are not astronomical).

Agree1 Disagree0

Hi eds and fellow reds, just wanted to have my say on loci remy. My thoughts about his attitude and ability are very similar to what they were about Sturridge before he signed, in that I thought he could score goals and pace but had nothing else to his game but that buy didn't work out to bad did it? So hopefully with the right backing and coaching he could turn out to be a good squad player for us. And gives us a pact option to have through the middle if Sturridge gets injured. Thanks for reading.

I am really glad it looks like we are getting Remy. I've liked him ever since he was at QPR and in fact wanted him instead of Sturridge when he signed (how wrong was I?)

I think it also gives us a great option up front.

We can now play the diamond like last year, with 2 pacey forwards (Sturridge/Remy and Sterling behind)

We can play 2 wide players Sterling. Markovic, Ibe, Remy, with a central striker (Sturridge, Remy, Lambert).

We can play with a target man, Lambert, with 2 wide forwards (Sterling, Markovic, Ibe, Remy)

We can even play 3 up front with Lambert, Sturridge and Remy.

Is it just me that thinks our forward line actually is hardly any worse off with all of these options?

Hopefully this allows Rodgers to tinker and change things even more like he did so successfully last year.

Can't wait for the season start now!

Firstly why are we pushing through attacking players dead easy but struggling for our defenders? Is br giving the defenders a chance to prove themselves in preseason, see if sakho and skrtel have gelled better and if Enrique / smith impress? Or is it like tomo said lovren will happen after the Southampton game? (i mean he was spot on about Sanchez like lol)

second why sell borini and get remy? Why not add remy to studge, lambo and borini! See how it goes and if were still in all comps in January and if not ofload borini then? Or is the offer just to good to turn down, I mean if we can get 12 for him and 6/7 for assaidi ill be happy!

but my question is why play him in the friendly? Why not texteria? Watch borini bag a left foot, right foot, header hat trick now haha

thanks

Believable2 Unbelievable2

Do you think there's a small factor of attacking players wanting to join a highly scoring team, but defenders may be a bit wary about joining a side who concede a fair few! Obviously, if this was even considered it would be a very small influence.

Agree0 Disagree1

Maybe teams are asking a lot of money for the defenders we want and we aren't jumping and paying 20-25m straight away whereas our strikers have all been bought relatively cheaply with the exception of markovic and lallana. Teams know we need defenders and they know we've got the money in the bank at the moment.

One of the most Underrated English player. He could play almost 5 different positions. Excellent player to come off the bench and see off a close game.
He is a Jose Mourinho type player

Agree1 Disagree2

He is one of the worst players in the PL I've ever seen. can't cross, can't shoot, doesn't score much, poor technique, can't tackle, slow, positionally poor

Agree0 Disagree3

Play 5 different positions very poorly yes

Not a big fan of Milner, reminds me of Dirk Kuyt in many ways in that he works hard, never stops running but ultimately lacks a bit of quality.

Aside from a high workrate I don't see much else that he can bring to our team.

Remy to Liverpool, £8.5m Fee agreed

Ed, I know you didn't want this to happen, But why?

I understand that he'll be warming the bench, moaning non stop etc, but is he not the kind of depth we need? Only problem I have is the fact his wages are high, and that It probably means we're not going to sign an attacking replacement for Suarez, who could be considered 'World class' (If that was ever likely)

Believable0 Unbelievable2

Well if borini is leaving we haven't got any more players, just a bit more experience in our young squad! I can only think Rodgers is expecting a lot from ibe sterling suso coutinho etc, all of whom could be here for 10 years, so borini will always be a fringe player

Hey guys just signed up although been following the site regularly for years.
I've given it a fair amount of thought and my first post is going to be about who should fill our left back spot next season.
The Contenders:
Jose Enrique
Glen Johnson
Jon Flannagan
Jack Robinson
Brad Smith
Alberto Moreno
Ryan Bertrand
Marcos Rojo and
Ben Davies

1.Enrique
He is a solid player when fit but is prone to defensive lapses and often hold on to the ball for too long. Can be a good squad member though.
2.Johnson
It is well documented that Johnson plays better at LB as he concentrates more but while he isn't a bad player I would like if he moved on this summer as I think we had him for his best years and he served well even if he was lazy occasionally but there aare better options for us now.
3.Flannagan
Big appreciation to Flanna the way he played himself into a regular spot last year. His attitude is exemplary. he is a good defender and is decent going forward. if he improved his crossing he wuld really be a brilliant all round full back but I think he should be our 1st choice RB next season.
4.Robinson
Had an OK loan spell at Blackpool. He will make a very solid lower mid table prem LB but I don't think he will make it with us.
5.Smith
I really rate Brad Smith as a prospect but he is nowhere near ready to be our 1st choice LB yet but is an extreemly solid option for the future and in cup games against lower league teams.
6.Moreno
Perhaps the most high profile LB target for us. He has great pace, is a good tackler, a good passer, can cross well and shoot well too but he is weak in the air and not the strongest (he isn't weak mind you).
One big problem I personally have with Moreno is that for someone with this much obvious natural ability his end product is surprisingly low. However he is still very young and last year was his first full top flight season so I'm quite sure he will improve that. He is prone to the odd mistake (very rare) in defense but his age is probably the cause of that and this will improve too in time. The biggrst problem with Moreno is his eagerness to attack which sometimes gets him caught out in defense but his pace usually allows him to atone for any errors. His decision making needs work as well but that's something Rodgers seems to be good at sorting out. All in all I hink out of all our targets and options he is the best both presently and for years to come.
7.Bertrand
I honestly don't understand why people hate him so low. He may not be a glamouros option like others but he is a good player. Decent in defense and going forward. One thing that sets him apart from all the others in this list is his positional sense which is very very good. We could do a lot worse than Bertrand but havin said that we could do better as well.
8.Rojo
Another good palyer who I feel does not get the credit he deserves. All the things I said about Bertrand apply to Rojo too. He is a very good defender and is good going forward and has good positional sense too (not quite as good as Bertrand though). He would do well as our LB next year.
9.Davies
No doubt he is a good player but he is similar to Enrique in too many ways and I think we would be wasting money on him (that doesn't mean he's a bad player by any means just that he's not the one for LFC)

Now Finally I would like to highlight a player that I wish LFC would pursue. Ricardo Rodriguez. He is IMO the best young LB out there (even better than Shaw). He is very solid in defense, is a decent headerr of the ball, tackles well, position himself well, can dribble, can pass, is somethng of a dead ball specialist (a left footed one that we currently lack) and his crossing most of the time is sensational (he really is a very very good crosser. The bend and whip he puts on crosses is just great). Now I'm not saying he is flawlwss. He too can make mistakes and needs to improve on things but I think at 12 to 15 million we can persuade Wolfsburg to sell and I think he represents the best option for us should we pursue him.

In summary I would like our LB next season to be in oreder of preferance
1 Rodriguez
2.Rojo
3.Moreno
4.Bertrand
5.Enrique
Would love to hear feedback from the eds nad other poster (especially Ed001) on my post and if there's any other analysis you would like me to do similar to this one.
Thanks and Good Day to all

Liverpool have sold Luis Suarez for £75m while they have loaned out Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto. Sunderland are on the verge of sealing the signature of Fabio Borini for £14m. Oussama Assaidi looks set to join Stoke for around £7m while Napoli are discussing moves for Lucas Leiva and Pepe Reina. Liverpool may have lost Suarez and you could argue that they slightly over payed for Lallana but other than that the transfer business so far has been excellent. Rickie Lambert for £4m is a solid investment while Emre Can and Lazar Markovic have bags of talent and could prove to be bargains. Loic Remy looks next on Rodgers hit list and is expected to sign in the next few days for just £8m. Liverpool are also planning one last ditch attempt to sign Alberto Moreno after missing out on Ben Davies to Tottenham but Rodgers still holds an interest in another Swansea man, Michel Vorm could arrive at Anfield depending on Pepe Reina's fututre. Liverpool are still trying to sign Dejan Lovren from Southampton but are a couple of million away in terms of valuation. Rodgers is also planning one more big signing to add to his attacking line-up and Real Sociedad's Antionne Griezmann is the man, the French forward is believed to have a £24m release clause. Rodgers continue's to look to the future as he will sign Divock Origi for an initial £6m however the forward will spend next season on loan with current club Lille.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

Two totally different players, but would say they are both as good as each other in there own positions .think they both need at least one more season where they have there feet kept on the ground .i hope we don't put pressure on sterling to fill Luis boots, and the best thing for Barkley I think is for him to stay with bluenoses and continue to learn his trade .but they will both be top top players as long as they keep working hard

Barkley has potential, But He is over hyped and overrated by the media. He wouldn't do anything without two holding DM behind him.
Sterling worked hard to get into the first eleven, Was also dropped due off form, Sterling is Better as a player.

Agree3 Disagree0

I think sterling due to the fact he tactically better than barkley as he can play numerous positions.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm probably biased but I think Sterling's maturity for his age is what marks him out as a much better player than Barkley currently. I think Barkley will prove to be quality in future but at the current time Sterling is miles ahead in terms of talent, development, tactical understanding, game intelligence, I mean you name an attribute and Sterling is probably equal too if not better than Barkley (except shot power). Barkley is still very raw - Sterling is already looking like a very polished player and he is 19 and only getting better.

Hi eds

From reading this site and all the eds responses it looks like our transfer business is far from done. It also seems like we still have quite a few outgoing transfers to complete Borini Reina Assaidi Agger Coates Lucas and a few possible loans too.
My question is this BR has said he needs to increase the size of the squad to compete in all competitions.
Do you think if all the players above do move on we would have to bring in new players to fill the gaps in the squad that would leave. Then to actually increase the squad extra players would have to be brought in as well?
I think this sounds excessive to me. we already have brought in 4 players. The above mentioned players would require a further 6 players and to increase the squad you could be looking at a further 2 or 3 more. Can you see a transfer window with lfc bringing in possibly 12 new players? And while that makes it exciting for us fans do you think it would be possible to make them all gel to challenge for titles.
Thanks for the hard work out in by you all and I look forward to your response and views on my post

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - There is a limit on squad size. Three of the players you mention were not part of the squad. One didn't play last season and Liverpool is overloaded with centre backs.}

The general consensus here us remy over borini. Why? Remy would probably sulk at being second fiddle whereas borini would be ready and primed. Big shame if he goes

Believable4 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - Too late.}

Doesn't matter how ready and primed he is, he's never going to be good enough, IMO. And apparently that's Rodger's opinion also.

Maybe Remy has faith in his own ability and believes he can replace Sturridge, or play alongside him. I'd rather this than someone happy to accept that they're not good enough to play every week, I can't see how that lack of competition can raise standards.

Agree0 Disagree1

19 Jul 2014 13:37:34
I think Remy would start more games on the right along with Sturridge than Borini.
Remy has pace and he is a natural goal scorer, compared to Borini is still not the finished article.
But I would have personally gone for Lacazatte, He has got everything to play upfront with Sturridge in a Diamond. He is 23 and had an incredible season.

I've been struck by the number of comments slating our CBs, or at least crying out for better ones.
I can't help thinking that most PL CBs would have struggled to keep a tight defense bearing in mind BRs very offensive style of play.

They all made mistakes at various times. Kolo looked completely panicked once or twice, Agger lost his man at a few set pieces, Skrtel was caught out a few times, etc, etc.

But I wonder- how much better would other CBs have done playing in that system?
And btw, will Gerrard have the legs to cover them properly full the full 90 mins next season?

Surely a player like Ilori with his great pace is an ideal CB for a high-pressing system?
I must admit I haven't seen much of Lovren. Do people think he has the pace to play our system well, and the technical ability to play the ball out?

What qualities has he got that is attracting the club's interest so strongly?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Lovren isn't fast, but he's quick to react and fast off the mark. It's his reading of the gsme that makes him such an attractive option. He sees danger before it's even started and he is great at communicating to others so that he van order them to cut out that danger. He's a leader and a tactically astute defender. He has tenancies to be a little forceful in the challenge but that's better than neing to week in the challenge. He is also very good at tracking runs and marking his man (without grabbing his shirt).

In terms of on the ball ability, I genuinely wouldn't have known which was his stronger foot without googling it. He is very good on the ball. He can both pass it it or carry it out from defence and he has good vision to play a pass in between the lines rather than just sideways to his fullback or back to his keeper.

He is also very strong and knocks strikers off the ball effortlessly.

I would argue that last season only 4 defenders were better; Reid, Distin and Kompany. The problem with Reid is that West Hams deep style makes it easier for defenders to look good. It has to be said that the likes of Koscielny, Mertesacker, Terry and Cahill were not too far behind though. I'd feel very safe with Sakho and Lovren though and I think with a better partner Sakho would suddenly becone twice the player as you saw for France alongside Varane.

Agree1 Disagree0

Very good reader of the game and technically good. not the fastest but sakho is so they would compliment each other very well! That's what's attracting the club I would have said. they can both win the ball in the air sakho can use his pace to keep up with forwards when needed or lovren his brains to out smart them!

Agree0 Disagree0

Lovren isn't quick at all which is why the interest surprises me but he was a very good centre back last season in a team that played a higher line than us which shows he's clever enough with his positioning to be able to adapt even with his lack of pace

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jul 2014 13:47:10
Lovern is a cracking player, A Versatile defender who could play with both feet.
But There is one very important point, He enjoyed the luxury of 2 holding DM at Southampton, Things wouldn't be the same at Liverpool.
If we would have bought a top Quality DM in the Matic or Masch Mould, Agger-Sakho would have been fine.

Is it just me or have Liverpool sold there only world star player and are replacing him with more mediocre players. Liverpool will never be a force if they continue this. Manchester United who finished seventh last season have spent the same money roughly so far as Liverpool but have got 2 players where Liverpool have four. Arsenal Chelsea and City will all buy if not bought already quality players while we sign unknown and in some cases unproven players. Not having a dig at the signings who could well turn out to be good but to me to improve you need to buy quality over quantity. Rather reus or Vidal (examples) than three or four average players.

Man U had issues with there CB's last season; 2 have left - none replaced as yet; a talented but unprovern LB has arrived as well as CM / ACM from spain - unprovern in the PL.

I really do not think your statement adds up.

I think we have added quality; whether that is (lets say for arguments sake - the best in their position in the world on current performance and form) quality you want then I can agree but I do not think Liverpool will be addint those types of players like that for some time.

We haven't got the financial resources to do so currently. Nor the will to fail FFP like other clubs have recently.

Hi eds and reds.

Really sorry to bring Suarez's name into yet another post, but who is going to take our free kicks now he's gone?

There was a time last season when we got a free kick in a certain area and you KNEW he was going to score. We are really going to miss that I think.
Gerrard can land it on heads but he rarely blasts it in the top corner like S7 could.

Does anyone think we need to replace him with a midfielder who can score from outside the box?
We now have a wealth of players who are good with the ball and take people on, but with a likely option of scoring long-rangers on the pitch defenders won't know whether to press or sit. It would be a great tactical string to the team's bow.

So I think we should 'spend the Suarez money' / 'replace' him with a midfielder.

Can anyone suggest who this player could be?

Stoneage

ps - Liverpool FC currently have no number 7 and no number 9. When was the last time that was the case? Crazy.

Believable0 Unbelievable2

I would stop Gerrard taking free kicks outside the area unless to play into box

To shoot outside Lambert 1st choice and I think lallana is pretty good also

Agree1 Disagree0

Is this for real?

Footie manager syndrome at its best here.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well Gerrard Lambert coutinho lalanna and even sterling all work on their free kicks and have different qualities with them so I would say between all of these we have free kicks covered! As for goals from the middle. coutinho will be older better and hopefully get more same with sterling lalanna will certainly get a good few and finally Henderson I'll bet a large sum of money he'll get over 10 goals!

Agree0 Disagree0

So u want us to spend money on a player who is a dead ball specialist? How about actually letting world class talent like Markovic and Sterling develop their overall game by letting them take the free kicks and corners, and helping them become better. And what's with the obsession about numbers? Our season won't falter simply bcoz no player is not wearing '7' or '9'.

Believable8 Unbelievable0

19 Jul 2014 10:30:17
If the Remy deal goes through, I would imagine that's it for the final 3rd. I somehow doubt Isco, Reus and their ilk are really going to join. Essentially Remy, Lambert, Markovic in and Suarez, Borini and Aspas out. Of these only Suarez played a role last year (and obviously a big one at that!). However presumably Remy and Lambert will play more of a role than the outgoing duo did (otherwise why buy them?)

Add Can and Lallana and that's 5 new people to integrate into the setup. And that's before we address the defense. Assume 2 more there (a CB and LB) and that's 7, of which 4 or 5 will be in the starting lineup?

That's a lot of new faces to integrate unless BR is tearing up his playbook and starting fresh.

I know we need more options for the number of games we are going to play but one of the main reasons we were successful last season in my view was a largely consistent starting 11 and a couple of formations. And when we tried to bring in others (Aspas, Moses, changing defense), it didn't work as well.

I am largely happy with who we've brought in but BR really has his work cut out this season to get the team playing with multiple formations and new personnel.

Should be very interesting.

Eds, do you expect the cost of buying players to exceed last season's? It seems like lots of clubs, including Liverpool of course, are spending silly money trying to recruit players. So are we expecting record figures this year, or something close to last year? Just thought I should ask.
Thanks.

Ill just put this out there for those interested. Lacazette is currently on a fifth of what remy is earning a week and i'm aware his attitude is poor. I personally would opt fot lacazette now( though would probably want 1st team football). Origi I am not.convinced at all. I am not convinced he is good enough and it is most likely he will go back on loan which is off no use to us next season if sturridge were to get injured anf Lambert has a dodgy back

Hi Ed001, a quick question for you when you have time. I was wondering if you knew why McLaughlin wasn't included in the pre-season tour? I was hoping to see him fight for the place and he was at pre-season last year. The same for Rossiter.

Cheers

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - weren't both playing internationals and so late back to training?}

Well rossiter played the first friendly? So I really don't know about him!

I watched him, Shanek but was curious as to why both aren't being given the time in USA. Maybe Eds point about an international means they've more international games lined up

Hi Eds, hope all is well.

With Liverpool looking to off load Borini now too, surely some movement of some kind regarding a striker is necessary? To your knowledge, is Ibe going to be given more of a chance this year? Have the club targeted a player or two to bring in to increase the striking options, Cavani possibly?

Thanks as always,

KingGiggsy

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - they aren't 'looking to offload' Borini, it is just that Sunderland have made an offer that meets the valuation set on him.}

Ok fair point. What about the rest of my original post Ed, any info you can give would be appreciated.

{Ed001's Note - Ibe might yet go out on loan, but they are looking to get him game time yes. Not looking at Cavani that I know of.}

19 Jul 2014 09:11:33
Ed002, in your opinion, do you think a club should engage in transfer talks with multiple clubs simultaneously to get a player for the same position?Like what is going on with Moreno, Bertrand and Davies. The various selling clubs will surely be upset?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - It is not uncommon to be looking at several players for the same position and perhaps have some level of discussion with two. What I see as less likely is making bids on two at the same time.}

Have targets been lost because of such tactics Ed? For instance a player could feel that a club is not showing its intent to the fullest ie trying to sign other players as well, and hence tell the club off. Would appreciate if you could name a player who fell into such a category in the past :)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Sure.}

It appears that Everton are close to signing Lukaku, I'm staggered that we haven't tried to sign him. Proven premiership goalscorer and an immense talent.
Big mistake in my opinion

Believable2 Unbelievable9

Where would he play for us? The CF position is already taken by Sturridge with Lambert as cover. Why waste 20-25 million pounds on a player we do not need? No doubt he is a quality player, but would be a luxury signing, not a necessity. Someone like Griezmann who can play anywhere across the front line would come in handy though.

Agree2 Disagree0

I don't think Everton will be paying anywhere near that sort of price though which is why I think it'll be an opportunity missed. Agree about Griezman though

Morning Eds

Great to see Edoo1 back with your very informative replies, I totally agree about Remy, he is a 100m sprinter in football boots and just does not fit the mould of BR's philosophy, and tends to sulk in the centre circle rather than tracking back helping his midfield, his attitude is appalling.

Eds001. have the club / BR registered any interest with other clubs / players for any one season loan deals?

Or would that come later on once he feels he has finished his business in the market in terms of buys / sales? And there are still vacant squad roles to fill

Or are the intentions to fill the vacant squad numbers with committed buys and then from The Acadamy

It seems a shame to bring in second rate players in on loan to fill gaps ( cissokho / Moses . who have or course, and rightly so got returned) when we have so muchnyoung talent knocking on the door, along with Suso and Texeria who i'd love to see both get a chance next season

Or was cissokho / Moses brought in on loan last season because of financial restrictions / reasons to actually buy players and BR thinking that certain Acadamey players maybe were just a season away to step up to the plate. and loan options won't happen this coming season? ( I'm not obsessed by loan players by the way, just wondering BR chose them 2 over the Acadamey)

Thanks in advance Eds001

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I have not heard of any loan movement yet. That was just about giving him time to find the right players. Now he has had that time, I would only expect loans if we can't seal signings again.}

Eds. so it was the club monitoring BR to trust him in his signings, before giving him X amount to actually go and buy players and his desision making in terms of bringing quality in and adding quality in depth?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - no it is because we have a bigger pot to use due to the increased TV revenue.}

19 Jul 2014 09:24:02
Gotta say I'm not impressed by these Remy links. If Remy is our option I'd much rather keep Borini who has a far better attitude and overall more to his game than Remy.

Borini is happy to be at Anfield and fight for his place. He will cost us nothing as he's already there, and his movement and all round game is far superior than Remy's.

Moving on from Remy I would much prefer us to try and sign Isco from Real Madrid if possible obviously. Whether it be a loan to buy option or a straight forward permanent deal.

I would also prefer us to take a chance on Munian of Bilboa. Ok he's had a bad season this season but the manager could get the best out of him again.

Both these players have bags of quality and would suit our play and criteria much more than Remy. Admittadly they would be more expensive options but still they would offer so much more than Remy could.

Eds do you know if Real would be willing to release Isco? Is he considered surplus?

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - as far as I am aware they are looking to give him more time, last I heard they were considering a loan move for the season.}

19 Jul 2014 09:12:51
Good to see your back ed001, I was wondering if you could give me your take on the transfer business so far and who you would like to see Liverpool bring in? Ed002 gave a detailed and honest response which I thought was a great read, I'm curious what your thoughts are as well? Thanks and once again great site with reliable and honest feedback.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I am not sure to be honest about it.
I am glad Suarez is gone, much as he is a truly great player, he spent far too much time sat on the sidelines banned and was far too much trouble to deserve his obscene wages.
I would like to keep Borini myself, but I can't see him getting the chance centrally, which is where he should be being played, his movement off the ball is far too good in the box to play him where he can't get in there enough.
I have no problem with the releases of Hodzic and Sokolik, neither were good enough to have a future with us.
Aspas on loan to Sevilla will be good for him, he deserves the chance to play regularly, his attitude was exemplary. Unfortunately he just wasn't fitting in to the league, despite his nice touch and control, it was useless when he was just knocked off the ball so easily. Hopefully he will have a brilliant season personally, the lad deserves it.
I like the signing of Lambert, we needed some experience up front to guide youngsters through, and he is a great example, having come all the way up from the lower leagues through his own efforts. Good player too, more of a deep lying forward, a creator rather than a poacher, but he does get goals too. Only worry for me, as he should still have a good few years left in the tank otherwise, is his back problem. Hopefully he won't be playing every game anyway, so he should be able to get the rest it needs.
Lallana I really like, he isn't lightning fast, but he has got acceleration to get himself space to do something. Plus the skill to get past someone with the ball. He glides past people, rather than sprints past them, with the ball glued to his foot. I like that in a player, as it means they don't lose it so readily as a player who relies on pace, who requires a lot of space to get the best out of his ability. Lallana can just create his own space in a tight situation. Also he works so hard. He runs himself into the ground every match.
I am not sure about Can and Markovic. I have never even seen Can play, that I know of.}

19 Jul 2014 10:55:25
Thanks for the detailed reply ed001, I am very excited by the prospect of markovic but am worried that Chelsea could of signed him for half the price we paid and chose not to, I'm hoping they regret it and he lives up to the hype . like sturridge!

Agree0 Disagree0

You know those fast players you talked about, those who rely on pace, well markovic is one of those Ed. But for a 20 yr old he's a good catch for Liverpool. Never afraid to run at players and his final ball release is a bit different. Maybe he plays it too soon. Well a few games into the season and you'll know anyways ;)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Only seen him play once, think it was against Nice. Hit and miss for me, did a really awesome flick over one of the defenders but it came to nothing. Rest of the game, he was anonymous. Who would you want out of
Davies/Bertrand
if it comes down to them two?

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - can I choose Smith instead?}

I wish ed Really its a case of crocodile vs python

Agree0 Disagree0

Have to agree with Ed. Just give Smith a chance at least. What's the point of buying a 21 year old LB when we have a 20 year old LB who could use the game time? If he's not good enough, then let him move on.

Agree1 Disagree0

99.99% of the fans on this page would chooses Smith. Given a proper chance, the lad could well be first choice left back by the time the season ends. The only difference between Smith and our targets (Moreno, Bertrand, Davies) is experience. Give Smith regular games, he will be better than all 3 of them.

Agree1 Disagree0

Smith will be boss one day. hopefully not to far in the future

19 Jul 2014 12:02:23
Smith hasn't been included for the tour of USA and I think it is fairly obvious that unfortunately, Smith won't be trusted with being a competitive option along with Enrique and LFC are definitely looking for a LB.

The Real AG:

If Sunderland have paye £14M for Borini, why did they not get Balotelli, I know the wages would have been very high but I doubt anyone would have seen that happening.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - forget wages and price, why would Balotelli want to join them? Nothing against Sunderland, just that he would not want to join a struggling team.}

It's an absolute peach of a deal for Liverpool. He offered nothing. I like the guy, I really do, always humble and tried his best, but £14M for someone who completely lacks anything in terms of goals and affecting the game is great for the club. Good look Fabio

I've seen a few mention it and I am going to bring up the subject once more.

I've seen that Walcott is actually likely to be fit for September so that for me makes the potential for buying him greater. I heard it was Christmas time? Obviously may not be totally match fit till Christmas! Anyhow I'd love to see us bid for him. With his pace and coutinho through balls (check out the pre season match all be it against Brondby) we could terrorise defences!

Believable1 Unbelievable3

Who's place would he take in the team?

{Ed001's Note - yours....}

Agree0 Disagree0

But ed how will he take kens place? Will he happy being a private "special" masseuse for the players?;-);-)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I was meaning watching from the sidelines, as that will no doubt where he spends most of his career due to injuries. Unfortunately the lad is fragile and will always suffer hamstring problems or calf issues etc.}

Walcott's a quality player, lots of pace and has actually improved his end product massively over the last 2 seasons. Injuries however will kill any chance of a move away from the gooners. He probably won't be first choice there with Sanchez there now. Could be worth a punt next season once he has proved his fitness.

Hi all,

I'm looking forward to the game today and can't wait to see Markovic play, even if just starting pre-season. Hope he gets a run-out.

There's a great article about him on Liverpooltv website that may get the sceptics excited about having him in our team.

Also, with the sales of Suarez, Borini and Assaidi I wanted to play fantasy football for a first time albeit with a touch of reality. I'd like us to buy Lovren, Moreno, Remy, Origi, Bakkali and Ali with the money. 3 for now and 3 great prospects for next year onwards.

Macro Raus would be in there if I was being really stupid but it's just some fun with no intention of getting bogged down with financial sensibility. It's a banter page after all :-)

I'm really happy with our team now and, should Reina stay as competition, the only position I'm a little nervous about is LB as we have a stack of players there but no one has looked so good and consistent that they've claimed the 1st spot hands down.

Thank to anyone who reads this and takes time to comment although I would say that you've far too much time on your hands! :-)

Have a great weekend and thanks as always for the great work Eds

morn ed01 with Rodgers getting rid off his first buys is he realiseing his mistakes ie borini and aspas and do u think he has learnt from these? also do u think remi is the right choice to replace them and is 3 strikers enough cheers

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - yes, Rodgers is always evaluating his own work, as well as those around him, looking for ways to improve on what everyone does.
No to Remy, I don't think he is the right choice to sign for us at all, not good enough, not the right kind of attitude, on or off the pitch, to deserve to wear a Liverbird on his chest.
3 strikers is plenty if you play one up top. Also enough if there is a youth team player you want to use at times.}

It's such a simple thing to consider (improving what you previously did) but not everyone does it or if they try to have they made the right decision when they try to improve.

If Rodgers improves this season then I think we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. Also some of the younger players will be a year older and more experienced.

I do like what we've done in the transfer window this year; i'd still like to see some of the players who aren't going to play to be moved on; hopefully we will not have many players over 22 being sent out on loan.

The team does looklike it has more strength in depth and better options; although I still think we need 3 players with Borini likely to go (LB, CB & CF).

Agree1 Disagree0

Ed001, nice to have you back mate!

If not aremy, would you welcome Bony at around the £19-£20m figure beng touted! Do you think he would also welcome the opportunity to challenge Sturridge or do you think they could dovetail together?

Thanks

Z

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I am not convinced we need anyone to be honest. But Bony does seem like the best available option, unless Lacazette is as good as people say.}

Thanks ed. I would also have a preference for Bony. Lacazette is unproven in the prem so I would prefer someone a bit more proven to give an immediate impact, especially as we already have Markovic, Can and possibly Moreno or Rojo (depending on the reports!) coming in who will require some time to get used to the prem's pace and physicality.

I was hoping Borini was going to get a chance this season but if we are making our money back on him and bring in a replacement and sign another forward then who am I to complain?

This is going to be one of the busiest transfer windows for LFC yet!

I would love to hear Ed001's opinion on Remy once he's available. Thanks

Believable3 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - not a fan, he can hit the ball well, that is true, he is good if a ball is played into him on the burst so he can smack it into the corner, but he lacks skill and technique. His first touch is poor, hence why he is better when a ball is played into him over the top to run onto, where he can use his pace to make sure the touch is not too loose. I just don't see what good he would do in our system, he is best utilised in a team sitting deep and using long balls out of defence over the top of the opposition defence. What is the point of getting him, when we already have Sturridge, who is perfectly capable of playing that tactic, but is also much better at controlling possession and playing passing football. Remy is an extremely average player, overall, who can finish. His workrate is not that good, his attitude is appalling, he is a true mercenary and he would add nothing to a top four team. To play in the higher echelons, you need players that add more to the team than just one facet. You need strikers to get involved in build up play, to really push on and challenge for trophies, to work hard, chase lost causes, make runs to draw away defenders knowing they aren't going to be receiving the ball etc. He just does none of those things. He will score goals, but it would be like when Lineker went to Everton to replace Gray. Lineker scored more, but they won less trophies, because Gray offered them far more as an all round player. Remy wouldn't improve our team, he is not even in Lineker's class as a goalscorer either. Just not a player who should be anywhere near a Champions League team.}

Ed 001 would you prefer Lfc going for Lacazette?

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - yes. I haven't seen enough of him to judge him, but at least he might turn out to be a good signing. In my opinion Remy is just trouble and not a good enough player.}

A good review Ed. I just hope 002 is right and we want Lacazette, Origi or Huntelaar in that order of preference. They all offer something extra. Pace and skill eith Lacazette, Pace and power with Origi, and hold up play and poaching with Huntelaar.

Like you, I'm not a fan of Remy. I can't see how he would fit into our team as anything other than a lone striker at the expense of Danny.

Agree1 Disagree0

Sorry edo1 sought asked this question a minute ago on rumours anyway who would u like to see brought in realistic I no your big on using the youth but I think one of the academy could be are 4 striker so we still need one cheers

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I have no idea who would be realistic options to be brought in, that I have seen enough of to want to sign. I would rather the spaces in the squad were left in midfield, if anywhere, as we have so many good young midfielders. I know we have Ibe, in particular, that could be a great striker, but I would have liked to see him get regular football out on loan next season, rather than mostly watching from the bench.}

{Ed001's Note - you are welcome mate.}

Got to agree with you Ed; I think it would be a mistake if we bought him.

Do you think we are in for Remy?

Not sure who I would want as the new striker; only due to not knowing who we could get (and not to loan back out).

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I have been away a few days, so not caught up yet, but last I heard he was being offered around to Champions League teams in the major leagues and none had shown much real interest. Newcastle are now signing replacements, if he is not careful he will have nowhere to go. This story smacks to me of an agent stirring up chat to remind clubs he is on the market.}

Ed suggestion for poll of the day now borini has gone. bony or Remy. They seem to be our main two targets anyway not sure how much truth there is in either but I'd be interested to see which the fans would prefer.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed033's Note - The poll of the day has 'Yes' or 'No' options only, to keep it simple. I have put up a Liverpool voting poll up instead. Click on Bony or Remy to vote

Neither. I like Bony but feel they want to much for a player of his potential. I don't like Remy because of his history with the police and his general attitude.

I want Lacazette to replace Borini.

Agree1 Disagree0

Never once seen this boy lacazette. out of bony and Remy I would take bony all day long. Anyone care to divulge on what type of player lacazette is?

Agree0 Disagree0

Lacazette is fast, skillful, a good finisher for his age (15 goals last season) and technically very good. I can't really think of a player to compare him to. He's quite unique to be honest. He can play anywhere across a front 3. Lyon are my french team so I've seen a lot of him. He is particularly adept at beating his made and has a hell of a shot.

If he had to compare him to someone, I'd say a cross between Suarez and Defoe. Not as tricky as Luis or as clinucal as Defoe, but a kind of hybrid of the two. I say this because he dribbles the ball similar to Suarez making beating his man look easy at times, but his shooting is far more like Defoe's. Power and swerve rather than finesse. He is only 23 and I think he'd be an excellent long term buy who could even play with Sturridge. Whilst he lacks Suarez's creativity, he is very adept at creating space with unselfish runs.

Of all the strikers we've been linked with, he is the one I think we should be targetting. He is the game changer and he has the potential to be world class.

Agree2 Disagree0

Thanks for the info EMS/Ed1. I've not seen much of Bony or Remy to be honest and have just read what websites, journalists etc have been saying they could bring to the team. No one mentioned the stuff about Remy you guys did so it doesn't sound such an appealing buy now. Unless BR thinks he can improve him a lot. Lacazette sounds good from what you say but again all I can do is trust in what I read from my fellow posters and fans. I have seen Origi though and like the way he plays

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers ems. I always loved Defoe as a finisher and obviously Suarez as a dribbler so if he does both I'm in! ;) I still would love bony I think Lambert could teach him so many things and he could be pure quality! Although lacazette I'll also be happy with. Remy I just simply don't want although that goal he scored the back end of the 2013 season was special! One of my favorite goals in the premier league era!
