Hi Ed's and fellow posters,

What do you think of the strategy used againt Man City?

Isn't it a significant shift from Klopp's heavy metal and gegen press strategy?

The goal was good but how often do they go in? 1 in 10 chances maybe.

We played with two banks of four (aka) double bus parked in our own half and let City have the ball and were waiting to hit them on counter after the first goal.

The fact that we went without a striker and all midfielders says that we wanted to play on the counter and the goal made our job just easy.

The fact that City didn't get going
well into the 2nd half made it easier for us.

From a neutral point of view the game was dull and did not live up to the exiciting standards that was expected of.

One good sign to take note is Klopp is prepared to change the system/ style based on the opponent and team did well to pull it off.

Finally good win well grind/ ground out. The ability to play a different system and still get the result shows a very good sign.

Cheers and Happy New Year.

Believable3 Unbelievable5

{Ed001's Note - we played a 4-1-4-1, so it was not two banks of four at all.}

01 Jan 2017 22:51:59
Doesn't matter to me, we won, we got the 3 points against a top team. That'll do me just fine, couldn't care less what tactics was used, it worked.

01 Jan 2017 23:17:01
Firmino mane are forward players . Aguero did not have 1 touch in are boxs . Klopp out master pep and we could of been in 2 or 3 times if the ball was right. They had the ball but did naver really with it.

01 Jan 2017 23:33:29
I was there and I personally thought it was an exciting one. They had us on the ropes a bit second half but we hung on and defended well. Got the big 3 points. Lotta matches this month. got to keep our focus and keep cracking on.

Any word on Hendo?

01 Jan 2017 23:36:22
Klopp employed the best tactics to beat Man City. Good to see tactical versatility when needed.

01 Jan 2017 23:49:42
I thought it was one of if not the best performance of the season. No it wasn't played at 100mph but that is why I liked it. Thought they were very compact and solid but still kept the ball moving. I think it was a master stroke by JK as I'm sure City didn't expect us to play that way.

02 Jan 2017 00:36:21
I rekon klopp and co hav had a look at how best to take on the festive period games in total. Convenient how the schedule fell and allowed a plan vs city so the lads would have some energy in the tank for the full strength side to take on sunderland. Well that's what I rekon!

02 Jan 2017 07:34:25
Hello faith, the way we play against city sitting back and chasing ball is more energy sapping .

01 Jan 2017 23:37:35
I'm not sure if it was a tactic or just the way the game panned out. The early goal meant we didn't need to take unnecessary risks and we could afford to close the game out. Perhaps it could be the fabled 'plan b' that Ed2 is always going on about?

02 Jan 2017 09:16:45
It was a planned set up and it took a while for me to understand the reason. This team uisually attack even in the 94th minute. There was no reason to sit back other than a tactical approach.

02 Jan 2017 09:21:16
Planned set up Pip, This team attacks even in the 95th min. There was no other reason to sit back.

02 Jan 2017 13:36:06
I heard Klopp saying that it was not the intention of playing so deep more of a tactic of not leaving our defence isolated against De brune, Aguero, Silva an Sterling who don't really track back. We could not allow Milner and Clyne to press to high because how good City are at counter attacks. It did show that we can play a different way and gain the same 3 points.

02 Jan 2017 14:42:11
I think that Klopp has taken some lessons from games against teams who the technical ability to bypass our press. We stilk press but attack specifc signs. E. g., vs city when yaya got the ball with his back to goal you saw Lallana flying at him. J don't velieve that the way we played vs city was more energy sapping than other games we've played but I get the point about chasing around etc. Just had the sense it was a more controlled match so the running was centralised to half the fueld mostly. And also the benefit is s we see, baasically a full strength line up 2 days later. Klopp has the swuad tuned to go for it. Hope it works!

01 Jan 2017 21:56:13
I thought emre can done a good job the other night against city, so I hope he keeps his place alongside hendo and winaldum in future games. Just puzzled who is coutihno going to replace out of our front 3 who have been great along with origi.

01 Jan 2017 22:48:30
This is a good problem to have. players not making the first team are taking their chances when called upon. this keeps every1 on their toes for spots and good form a must. my opinion is that while fit Lallana must stay in that midfield 3. obviously that includes Henderson in the deeper position. Wijnaldum has made it pretty hard to drop after scoring the winner against city lol. Coutinho/ Firmino/ Mane infront of Wijnaldum/ Lallana/ Henderson is what i think klopp will pick when fit. what i would really like to see (mainly against teams that are going to park the bus) is Firmino/ Sturridge/ Mane infront of Coutinho/ Lallana/ Henderson.

01 Jan 2017 23:35:04
He's going to replace Mané while he's away, and we'll figure it out when Mané returns (hopefully fit and healthy) .

02 Jan 2017 06:31:16
Can struggled and was poor imo. Not sure which game where you watching. He is lazy and doesn't track back enough. We were utterly exposed once Hendo left. The only period of time when City had us on the ropes.

{Ed001's Note - tracked back well enough a few times to get back and make tackles when we needed him. He is far from lazy, he just has a tendency to sell himself on the halfway line when he should be just holding up the opposing player. Experience will teach him not to throw himself in, hopefully, in time.}

02 Jan 2017 06:58:50
He doesn't have the discipline and composure to play the holding role. It needs a lot of patience and good vision to read the game infront of you. To cut of the passing and anticipate it. He better learn it fast or he could be replaced. We shall see how Stewart plays today.

{Ed001's Note - it takes a while to learn patience and develop good vision. It is usually a product of experience and maturity. Can is still young, as is Stewart, and both make mistakes, the key is if they learn from them.}

02 Jan 2017 08:15:46
Another issue with Can is he keeps the ball too long and doesn't release it quick enough which is why we pass backward and sideways to recycle the possession. People need to get over from the fact big strong powerful lad would easily become a top notch CM.

02 Jan 2017 09:27:23
Can and lazy should never be seen in the same sentence.

01 Jan 2017 19:55:16

Pretty sure that united have only beaten Spurs and would sit on five points. Either way, it is a bit irrelevant if, after beating a title contender, we then go and lose to Bournemouth etc.

01 Jan 2017 21:01:43
United beat Arsenal didn't they?

01 Jan 2017 21:01:43
United beat Arsenal didn't they?

01 Jan 2017 21:14:00
Andy Giroud scored in the 90 mins to make it 1-1.

01 Jan 2017 21:14:38
No arsenal and United drew.

02 Jan 2017 00:16:15
Und are a different team now compared with when we played them.

They are the dark horse to watch along with Chelsea in the new year.

I hope they are one of the teams that will take points of Chelsea.

02 Jan 2017 02:22:22
My bad.

01 Jan 2017 19:42:01
Hello Ed01, If you are around mate,
Do yo think the academy should also be coached exactly the same way as the first team? It would certainly take out the transitional time for the youngsters to bed into the first team.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - yes and it is and has been for years.}

01 Jan 2017 21:18:42
Thanks mate.

01 Jan 2017 17:05:25
happy new year ed002, have a great 2017.

{Ed002's Note - And you KK.}

01 Jan 2017 16:03:20
No midfielder in Europe's top 5 leagues has been involved in more goals this season than Adam Lallana (14).

7 assists
7 goals

Hats off to the lad, he's really impressed me has Lallana, during the summer I was hoping he'd be on his way out the door, thank god he wasn't he's such a vital player now. Onwards and upwards, times are good :) YNWA.

Believable18 Unbelievable1

01 Jan 2017 17:02:10
I must confess I was one of those who thought lallana may not live up to his potential but I am delighted at how he is performing this season.

01 Jan 2017 17:46:58
The brutal reality is that under BR, Lallana was average at best. Under Klopp however, one of the best creative midfielders in England. Well done to him.

01 Jan 2017 19:10:23
Can we all take the above lesson and apply it to karius please guys?

01 Jan 2017 20:34:26
To the disagree person. Have some stones and argue why karius shouldn't be given the benefit of the doubt when applying the above lesson?

01 Jan 2017 20:47:08
Agreed, I felt in the summer, how is he going to get in the team with the players we have bought, but he along with Milner have become vital to this liverpool team. Lallana is at the peak of his career, and it just shows what a good coach can do for a talented player. I think the eds have mentioned that he is not allowed as much time on the ball, where he was taking 20 touches before he only takes 1 or 2 etc, it has made a massive difference to his game and given him a clarity.

Heard a good joke today. Klopp to Miler "Oi Millie, you have any Euro's in your pockets? Milner: No boss, only Sterling.

{Ed025's Note - love it kev..

01 Jan 2017 22:33:39
kevlaw - Haha excellent mate. Agreed with you 87red mate spot on.

01 Jan 2017 23:24:36
In regard to the karius comment, he's young n needs time, remember de gea's first season? .

01 Jan 2017 15:32:21
At first during the game i was very disappointed with how we were playing, then realized we were not going for all out attack as usual. Klopp surprised me with that, was I the only one surprised. now if he can combine the attacking with the last nights gritty display at the right times I have a lot more confidence about the title. We need to beat Chelsea though.
Ed001 if you are around, what will Klopp do today, a light training session or just relax and when will they go to Sunderland-tonight and stay in a hotel or in the morning.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it will be purely recovery work and then it is likely they will head over this evening and stay in a hotel tonight.}

01 Jan 2017 16:06:25
Thanks Edoo1

Dont post much as I used to as most questions covered, on this site two/ three time a day, best football site no question.

you and Ed002 are a class apart, happy new year to everybody. let's hope 2017 is ours.

{Ed001's Note - thank you very much, happy new year to you too. Let's hope it is a good one for all of us!}

01 Jan 2017 15:29:06
Would like to open the Milner debate again if that's ok.

Now I was one of the dumbfounded ones who thought Klopp had lost his mind by deciding Milner should be our left back this season, I'm happy to not only been proved wrong but made to look completely stupid, so well done Milner and Klopp, that's why your on stupid wages I suppose.

I'm just wondering though, would Milner make an even better right back than a left back?
He's doing an amazing job and I'm not suggesting changing what's working, just asking everyone's opinion, on the one hand if Milner was on the right he would be even more effective with his attacking and crossing especially, but does him being on the left give him discipline, make him concentrate more and make him more defensively sound? I remember glen Johnson looking a lot better on the left than the right because he was out his comfort zone and needed to concentrate more.

I'm only asking as Milner in my eyes is a much better player than clyne and I wonder if he could take his place in the team if we where to target a new left back, or would you keep Milner there and target a new right back?

Believable10 Unbelievable1

01 Jan 2017 15:39:28
Couldn't argee more mate.

01 Jan 2017 15:51:13
Personally I would leave Milner where he is. we have back up there with Moreno. With clyne I think is place will go to Trent sooner rather than later. We have four c backs. The goalkeepers I am also be happy with as the competition will improve both. Happy with midfielders and forwards also so I'm hoping we don't buy a player just for the squad as we also have some talented youngsters. Obviously if we sell anyone that changes things.

01 Jan 2017 16:43:49
Been saying the same thing for weeks Mikey, as it stands neither milner nor Clyne get to the byline very often, due to weak left foot for Milly and a lack of confidence I believe for clyne.
However it's working so I guess better leave well enough alone.

01 Jan 2017 17:30:45
Clyne has been superb these last 4 games.
Has been solid and looked a threat going forward.
Some people always need to be negative.

01 Jan 2017 18:26:53
In Clyne we have one of the best RBs in the league. If it's not broken don't fix it is my theory.

Chuck Milly in goal let see how he does 😂. Although in seriousness if Milner isn't playing LB does he get into the team? I would like to think yes but where would he fit in?

01 Jan 2017 18:20:18
Can't say I agree Clyne looks great going forward, he still can't ross for toffee, I'll also wait and see how he gets on without mane, who takes 2 opposition player with him everytime.
We still have 2 fullbacks on loan as well.
Milner is playing very well atm, his positioning is excellent. I'm still frustrated by his constant need to put the ball back onto his right foot, its very predictable. If he starts crossing with his left foot, he could really trouble defenses.
If we were to sell flanno and wisdom tomorrow, I;d still consider our fullback positions weak. Moreno improved in the 1 game is aw where he filled in, Clyne for me is not a long terms solution to an ambitious team. It's a lot of pressure on TAA to ask him to step in at such an early age.

02 Jan 2017 00:20:20
Milner was man of the match last night.

01 Jan 2017 14:49:11
Right I was an advocate of we don't need to buy anyone this summer.

But I'll be honest if Henderson's heel injury is as bad as last time (I'm taking rest of the season), then I think we should bring someone in this window.

Stewart and Emre are fine but they cannot do what Henderson does and we saw yesterday once Hendo went off our midfield lost its shape and looked more penetrable.

Then again I'm not sure who's out there that's available and can do what Hendo does as he is a class player.

Believable7 Unbelievable8

01 Jan 2017 14:57:49
But if we buy somebody who has all those attributes, what happens when the captain is fit again? Short to mid term injury doesn't free up space in the squad for a new first team player,
On the other hand, if Lucas goes and Henderson is long term out.

01 Jan 2017 15:10:20
Can was exposed playing that deeper role when Hendo went off. He doesn't have the discipline or positional sense to play there. Stewart is a true DM just like Lucas and Klopp plays with someone who is better on the ball.
We ll have to wait to see the extent of his injury.

01 Jan 2017 15:12:58
Stewart has proven he is a classy back up. If Hendo is out for a few games, no problem. If Hendo is out for the season, we perhaps need to adjust the system slightly to suit the players who are fit. Simple really. Nothing stopping us going 4-2-3-1 with Wijnaldum and Stewart/ Can in front of the back 4.

Don't panic lads. We have quality, and in depth.

01 Jan 2017 15:23:24
Stewart is brilliant on the ball Harry. Some of his forward passing is excellent and he used to occassionally play on the wing as a youth player, such is his quality on the ball. He probably doesn't have the same range as Hendo. For example, I can't see him hitting many raking diagonals. However to say he is just a pure defensive player is just offensive and frankly wrong. He is the perfect back up. This for him is his chance to nail down the position and make Henderson fight to get back in.

01 Jan 2017 15:28:21
I would love Dele Alli! Still can't believe we didn't go all out and get him. Only 20 years old, Liverpool his boy hood club. Still hopeful.

01 Jan 2017 15:30:07
We're overrun with players.

01 Jan 2017 16:59:03
Okay fair enough fellas.

You're probably right. I'm panicking a bit. I think Henderson is just so key to how we play that I'm worried our style will suffer and results too without him.

01 Jan 2017 17:43:35
Well MK, I take your words on Stewart. In that case he should be picked ahead of Can. Don't you think so? Stewart should have been on the pitch when Hendo was taken off yesterday!

01 Jan 2017 18:07:54
Was Stewart on the bench Harry? I genuinely don't know!

01 Jan 2017 18:15:03
Exactly my point. Klopp would prefer Can in that role in case Henderson needs to be taken off. Stewart only occupies the bench of Can is out with an injury. Since we don't play with specialist the first three pick remains Hendo, Wiji and Can.

01 Jan 2017 22:12:14
Stewart dribbles a little too much sometimes and is prone to get tackled in our defensive third.

02 Jan 2017 00:40:09
If you have lucas on the bench there is no need to carry stewart as well. And can offers more dynasim to the team in a variety of midfield roles that benefit coming off the bench vs what you would bring steeart on for, which is purely to shut up shop. But Lucas covers that role too.

01 Jan 2017 14:30:16
I'm probably getting ahead of myself but this morning I found myself looking at the fixtures for the run in, we play city at the end of March and then in our final nine games don't have to play any direct rivals for the top four (well assuming it stays as is and there are no surprise teams making a run) . Ok one of them is Everton but that's at Anfield. I guess my point is that as long as we stay within touching distance of the top that run should help push us on. Here's to a huge 2017 for the reds!

Believable17 Unbelievable0

01 Jan 2017 14:47:49
One game at a time Jonno;)

01 Jan 2017 15:31:14
Who have we dropped points against in the first half of the season?

Burnley, Bournemouth, West Ham, Saints, Spuds and ManUtd.

01 Jan 2017 15:15:57
I worry about the teams not in contention for top 4 more than the ones who are, Klopp has a brilliant record against the top teams in this league, it's the teams we are expected to win against that cause us the most problems, look at who has beaten us this year.

01 Jan 2017 16:50:22
Any and every game presents a chance to drop points. no disrespect bruv but I really fathom to understand how people still talk like this! One game at a time!

01 Jan 2017 12:34:19

Macca will pop up when we least expect it, he always seems to anyway. No doubt he's got lots of juicy information for us.

01 Jan 2017 13:25:25
Ed02 has given a brilliant podcast on the targets and I don't see any changes from those.

01 Jan 2017 11:57:30
Don't you just love media spinsters! We beat Stoke 1-4 and it's all "this defence is going to cost Liverpool a place in the top 4". Chelsea beat Stoke 4-2 and now it's "Great battling performance. They were asked different questions and they found the answers just like all good title challengers".

No fault of Chelsea might I add, just funny the way the media can completely change the way a result is viewed by the general public. We have only conceded 21 goals in 19 games. Only Chelsea (13) and Man United (19) can better that. Arsenal and Spurs could better that as well as long as they don't get thumped in their 19th games today. Guess my point is, we have the 5th best defensive record in the league at the midway point, but the best offensive record to go with it. So it really isn't anything to write home about that we have conceded just over a goal a game when we are scoring an average of about 2.5! Let's not forget that we have played the 3 big London clubs in London already this season and taken 7 points! Let's see how many they take back to London from the fortress that is Anfield!

Believable21 Unbelievable3

01 Jan 2017 12:34:47
MK you can't win with the press. Change their minds daily depending on results. Look at the national team, one win and it's our time, one loss and the press make them out to be the worst on the planet. Makes me laugh reading the papers.

01 Jan 2017 12:41:38
Without that lapse in concentration against Bournemouth, we'd have conceded three less goals as well! We're keeping clean sheets now which is very important. The media don't know what they're on about half the time.

01 Jan 2017 12:42:38
I have been making the same argument for weeks and thankfully, you have seen the same things I have, MK. The media are what they are and it seems some of them have it in for us and Klopp especially with this "bad defence and GK issue" nonsense. They always use statistics where it suits them and then still stick to a narrative even tho, it is being debunked as you just did. We don`t care what they think about us and frankliy, I never have especially after the chuckle bros started targeting Karius unfairly, IMO. We know how good we are and how awesome our manager is and that is what should matter.

01 Jan 2017 13:18:26
In reality our defense has done really well but it's not perfect. Clyne and Milner have been very strong defensively but Karius and Migs have shown flaws at times in goal and Lovren and Klavan have also made the odd mistake here and there. The problem is the media makes every mistake out to mean players are completely rubbish when in reality Karius and Klavan deserve a bit of time to settle into a new league, and it hasn't helped Lovren we haven't had a settled CB pairing for a while for a variety of reasons.

I suspect if we can get Matip back and playing with Lovren, and Karius gets the time he deserves then we will in time become one of the better defenses in the league - we're already not too far off if we give the back 4 the cover they need from midfield.

01 Jan 2017 14:22:55
I've noticed the same thing mk. I've noticed that were going under the radar a little bit in terms of how the pundits see us. I think ed1 summed it up pretty good with his match review. We used brilliant tactics against city, yet the pundits think they had an off day. I'm starting to think that all pundits have no clue about football.

01 Jan 2017 14:30:58
Don't read the media-watch the games and come tour your own conclusions.

01 Jan 2017 17:13:23
Well according to collymore we will finish outside the top 4 altogether because of our defence. I wouldn't worry about media and pundits, their opinions are just about as valid as ours on this site. so not much then!

01 Jan 2017 18:11:25
Honestly if it means going under the radar and being counted out then so be it. I'd prefer the pressure of us and we don't need to be recognised as genuine title contenders by them to actually be one. I think that suits us a lot more, so let the pundits play to the mainstream and the cliches. Defensively we have got a lot better. I think on paper we have a very decent defence, I'd say 5th best is about right. The problem is and has been for many years, are individual errors. It's only on occasion been down to shape or terrible defensive organisation, it's mostly individual errors and inability to defend set pieces. Now we are improving, I think the arguement some where trying to make is that we won't win the league with the way our defence and goalkeeper is, not that we have a shocking defence in regards to the rest of the league or can't compete, because that is simply untrue. But when you compare us with our direct rivals, then you see the point they might be trying to make, we are joint worst with city. However, they do exaggerate things and favouritism does exist to an extent. Just look how Karius came under such scrutiny and was called to be dropped but I didn't hear the same noise about bravo, even though in my opinion dropping Karius was the correct decision at the time.

The fact that we are clearly going for the league, people will say Chelsea are stronger back to front than we are, and let's face it they have been. We are a lot better offensively but they are a lot better defensively and we know defences win you titles whilst offences win you games. Our defence is now on track to what it should be. A few more games with good defensive performances and it won't be a stick for pundits to beat us with.

02 Jan 2017 01:47:26
I say long may it continue. If anything the press is taking the pressure off of us, they are writing us off and taking the expectations off us.
Maybe it's spurring klopp and the players to prove a point.

01 Jan 2017 11:34:55
Really interesting on the live chat last night. Before the game even started people was calling klopp a bottler for bringing in Can instead of Origi. Though it worked a trick. Guess that's why he's the manager and not anyone on here. Well played boys great win.

Wonder where the people off chat have gone now.

Believable12 Unbelievable0

01 Jan 2017 12:36:35
I had a different thoughts on the game before the kick off ( The usual style we play ) Though the display was completely against my expectations. Live chat means presenting / having your say on that moment.
It's not a ". Predict the scoreline. " You don't know what happens next and you only guess the way things are shaping up.
Don't think anyone would be disappointed with the result but certainly a few wild have lost their money on ". We creates tons of chances ", ". We have / had 70% of possession. "

01 Jan 2017 12:44:09
I`m starting to wonder if these "fans" are actually LFC supporters thru and thru.

01 Jan 2017 15:11:28
How can you watch the game properly and be typing francticlly on the live chat anyway?

01 Jan 2017 18:18:16
Yes I saw that also, it was harsh. I was thinking before the game that Can might well be brought into the team but I thought it would have been at the expense of wiji instead or origi as that's the usual switch we have done in the past. Only other way I could see us lining up was the exact same way as stoke but he changed it up a bit and I found it great. It shows he's improving vastly in regards to handling the premier league and changing tactics to suit certain opposition. These guys that say things like that in the chat have to refrain from judgement a bit until the match actually has talking points. But fans are different and we all have our opinions so questioning if they are thru and thru is also a bit harsh.

"Taxi for Mr Sakho".

01 Jan 2017 10:40:32
The owners should leave. Klopp out. Everyone out. It's an absolute disgrace we haven't signed anyone yet 😉.

01 Jan 2017 11:05:01
We need a keeper, a centre back, a left back, a midfielder to cover Hendo whilst he is out, a replacement for Gini who has no impact on the game, a new striker to cover injuries to Ings/ Sturridge, and a winger to cover Mane while he is away. Maybe a replacement for Coutinho as well in case he leaves.

Aside from that, the squad is pretty good though. Otherwise, FSG out!

01 Jan 2017 12:45:51
You guys are a riot.

01 Jan 2017 13:20:19
Bring back Brendon.

We. Need. CHARACTER!

31 Dec 2016 22:54:22
Hi Eds, just wondered regarding Countinho, are players who want champions league football bothered about how this is achieved? Eg. Would it make a difference to Couts depending on whether we finished a comfortable 4th or whether we missed out on winning the league on the final day of the season? Wishing all the Eds a great new year.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Players want to be winning things, so finishing first is a lot better than fourth.}

01 Jan 2017 06:31:13
where are all the loudmouths slagging off our defence? and what about klopp a 1 trick pony with no tactical prowess? he sent pep to school with his tactics, this result and performance is what title chasing teams are all about, mignolet did not have 1 single save to make and since the west ham game we have won 4 on the bounce and have only conceded 1 goal, remember a certain pundit predicted we would get relegated with our defence! lastly yes mane will be missed but we do have countinho to come back, which will be a massive plus.

Believable12 Unbelievable1

01 Jan 2017 08:01:20
Migs had at least 1 save. but i get what ya mean!
The main thing for me is that we don't over-react to results, good or bad. More important we learn from mistakes and keep trying to get better. Evidence so far is that Klopp and co are learning and helping the lads to bounce back from negative results. Since the west ham game we're perfect and only conceding 1 goal while plundering 9.
Still, consistency may eventually be our downfall! But hopefully we pick up enough points along the way to keep us in with a shout in the final rounds.

01 Jan 2017 08:36:28
No one expected liverpool to drop back from their usual attacking display. He should have had this a very long time ago.

01 Jan 2017 09:21:34
I've referred to this in past posts, when I asked everyone if they thought Klopp was evolving and adapting to the EPL. Last night we saw that he is indeed adapting, and has figured out what it takes and how to win in this league. You could have argued "one trick pony" for last year, because he approached most games like a boxer and wanted to simply outpunch the opponent while taking as many punches as he could. "Parking the bus" is reviled on these pages, but we did it very effectively at certain moments last night, and ManC was always at risk of taking a second goal for the slightest of mistakes or some luck for us. There is no disgrace in winning ugly, even though free flowing football is what we all want to see. Jose Mourinho has made an entire career of winning ugly.

My bet is that if we have done so well without Coutinho, then we'll do just as well without Mane (with Coutinho back) . But I would still want to give the youngsters (Ojo, Brannagan, Wilson) a shot, provided they are fit.

01 Jan 2017 09:41:22
A few posters could certainly take the credit of yesterday's display. For some strange reason beyond me this page always under rated defense and defending. It was often called the boring Italian style. People never wanted Klopp to change the tactics coz we were scoring for fun, We were creating chances for fun blah blah and more blah. For Once in years Klopp decided to use his head and not his heart and the result is evident.
There is no shame in dropping deep and making a shape which cut off opposition passing rhythm.

01 Jan 2017 11:04:50
Klopp summed up his tactic perfectly in the interview. Stop them feeding Ageuro. That's what we did. I still don't think it was a perfect defensive display. There were times they had success, particularly down our right hand side.

We didn't really park the bus, ever single player worked hard to get back, this was evident particularly when Sterling got one on one vs Klavan several times and gigi and hendo busted a gut to cut into the box denying him the ability to cut in while Klavan re positioned himself.

We didn't press because we couldn't afford to, silva, toure sterling, fernandinho, KDB could bypass our mid with a few touches, and leave aguero one on one with klavan or lovren.

I loved the way we set out on their goal kicks, forcing Bravo to kick long, (pep must really regret what he said pre season here), it's what teams have done to us previously (united game) we won back possession pretty regularly from their kicks, we never gave the a chance to settle froma goal kick.

01 Jan 2017 11:08:35
For once Harry I agree. It was clear that City having an extra 24 hours rest gave them much fresher legs. Klopp quickly realised this and the second half was a brilliant change in tactics to what we are used to. We (excluding Lallana and Firmino who are like a couple of Duracell bunnies) didn't have the legs to press as a team. So we sat back a bit, held our shape and frustrated City to the point that their passing got sloppy.

Pep was schooled yesterday.

01 Jan 2017 11:35:20
Harry, you spent half time in the live chat talking about how City were dominating us and we were lucky to be winning and it was only a matter of time before they scored because we weren't playing well. You shot down a couple of posters who said exactly what you have in this postand told themto speak to you after the game. Glad to see you actually watched the second half instead of spouting nonsense.

01 Jan 2017 11:41:28
There was one incident in the 55th min where Silva opened up our midfield and had a shot just wide of the target. Other than it we were pretty compact.

We had no shots on target whole second half. No dribbles in between 49th to 73rd minute. We had only 7 dribbles all game ( Including Mignolet ) and we did not pose any threat going forward in the second half or even the entire match other than the goal and a couple in the first half.

Possession win you nothing if you don't do any thing with the ball is proved yet again. All this We dominated people will not quickly change their tongue in favor of what an accomplished defensive display.

First time under Klopp's regime we look like an unpredictable side who could turn up however we wish on the pitch.

I still feel gutted about the loss against Sevilla last season.

{Ed001's Note - seriously? We had no shots because we had no need to attack them. We were sitting back and waiting for them to come onto us to look for the counter. They were unable to even get at us to even give us something to counter on. You are the one that has been crying for months about how we should play like this and now we have you are crying we weren't attacking enough!}

01 Jan 2017 12:20:29
I don't know how could you say there was no need to attack them Ed01. A team primary based on attack attack and more attack philosophy. Where did I cry mate, I am presenting you how we played. Absolutely fine with deep defensive system. I am not a big fan of sending all the troops into the opposition area and get exposed on counter and hail it as the best offensive display and typical Liverpool style who believes in scoring numbers for fun.

{Ed001's Note - did we win? Then there was no need to attack them. We scored and stopped them scoring, that was enough.}

01 Jan 2017 12:23:49
Back

I am sorry but how many were confident on our defense before the game? We sat deep and the whole 70 mill fans know we are piss poor when it comes to see out a game. I am just one of them.

Did we not took the gas out against Bournemouth recently and conceded 4?

This team is basically built on solid attacking and even Klopp knows it. I don't think anyone would have thought the scoreline would have remained 1-0 against one of the best attacking team.

01 Jan 2017 12:31:18
Ha ha Ed01. We scored in the 8th min and had 82 mts to play against the best attack. Only Klopp knew what our tactics were except the fact we decided to play a midfielder for a striker. Did you know well in advance we would sit back and absorb pressure?
Liverpool these days takes time to get into the match and take full control dominating the ball and pressing up front which we did not yesterday and I am damn sure none actually guessed it would happen.

Could someone write and give me we will sit back against Sunderland preserving a single goal advantage?

{Ed001's Note - what are you talking about? None of what you are saying makes any sense Harry.}

01 Jan 2017 13:24:11
I am saying Liverpool played completely opposite to what they usually play and you cannot simply predict how they would play from here on. So assuming we don't need to attack / we don't need to defend is a pure wild card number. I honestly never thought the scoreline would remain 1-0.
I am happy we played completely opposite to Let's attack attack, attack system. But I wasn't prepared for that display nor I had any confidence we could beautifully see out 80 mts of the game with one goal margin.

01 Jan 2017 15:21:25
It's because of this belief that kloop and liverpool are one dimensional that kloop done what he done.
Pep and man city can only play one way they came to attack and counter press.
Kloop had liverpool drop off and be compact and play on the counter, stop the ball to silva and Aguero look where they had to drop to receive ball.
City end up with possession but all in front of us which led to the aimless passing we saw from city.
The only thing wrong with Klopp tactics yesterday was wondering scored to early if possible on our First counter attack. for the rest of game was to stop balls into Aguero with the belief that if we stopped him city couldn't hurt us.
Simple plan simple game but take a master coach to do the exact opposite to what everyone thinks you will do.
Pep looked a lost man yesterday with his subs in the last 2 minutes.
Kloop schooled him yesterday always be grateful we got him.

01 Jan 2017 04:02:00
Where's all the wjnaldum people now that were slagging him off since he arrived.

Under a rock I bet

This guy is improving game on game, he's like a silent assassin in play you don't realise he's there but he's always involved in the important build up and backtracking that many have not noticed.

01 Jan 2017 05:41:43
I always felt he needed a crackerjack moment savvy, as you say he has quietly gone about his business, he showed us exactly why he was purchased with this performance and capped it off with a trademark goal, plus if Henderson is injured we are going to need more displays from him like he gave against city, I hope he now becomes more confident in a Liverpool shirt.

01 Jan 2017 08:08:26
Kingkenny7 - gini find more confidence in the jersey or the fans find more confidence in him wearing the jersey!?

01 Jan 2017 08:55:21
both faith, the more support we give him, the better he will play, its a win, win situation for both parties.

01 Jan 2017 09:13:29
He's played really well in a few games recently but that goal last night, he nearly bust the net with that header.

01 Jan 2017 09:24:09
With ya kk! On that note, Would love to see Anfield rocking all game to spur the boys on. Can feel the tension all the way thru me telly lol.

01 Jan 2017 11:08:16
Wijnaldum played well yesterday and got a goal, It doesn't suddenly mean he's played well in every previous game! I never got the logic of ''i told you so'' from 1 very good game in 19, there are still plenty of times he's not composed enough in the last 3rd and surrenders possession in games as he gets cught in 2 minds and that he's too bus pointing at players where he wants them, and completely abandoning his own player to mark who's running 5 yards off him.

He played a vital part in a good team ethic yesterday, but 1 game does not make an entire season.

Hi eds and reds
Any news on Hendersons injury?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - apparently it was his heel again. Worrying.}

01 Jan 2017 08:25:18
Looked his mouth Yano. He didn't have any issues walking. I thought he had a tooth knocked out or summit.

{Ed001's Note - it may have looked like that (and I did wonder why he was coming off for what looked to be a mouth injury as well), but they have said it was a heel problem.}

01 Jan 2017 09:10:38
Klopp apparently confirmed that it was not the same heel that caused him issues last season.

01 Jan 2017 13:32:40
It could be both injuries.

He may have contracted Harry's foot in mouth disease?

01 Jan 2017 00:29:37
I am completely drunk and I am dancing nude here. We love Liverpool we love Liverpool.
Cmon Reds, You made me dream twice and took that away from me. Please get me the title Reds. Oh please get me the title.

{Ed001's Note - I don't think anything can help remove that image!}

01 Jan 2017 09:54:48
FAR TOO MUCH INFORMATION!

01 Jan 2017 01:42:54
Loved watching that win - not for the football which was scrappy as, but for the way we showed we can nullify some of the best attacking players in the league and go win a completely different way to vs. Stoke. That sort of versatility is needed in a title winning side as you can't always win playing pretty football, and sometimes it's about grit and heart and just not rolling over when under pressure. Up the reds!

01 Jan 2017 02:48:04
Zimbo, I can't help but arrogantly think that we're still winning games playing at our lowest.

01 Jan 2017 03:41:02
Exactly zimbo. I'm not expecting us to win the league, but we are definitely in a good position to go and fight for it. I can't wait for us to play in the Champions League again next season.

01 Jan 2017 06:00:19
Yeah agree zimbo, in seasons past we've crumbled at points like this, pivotal games going the wrong way, so good to see us get the win today, I don't expect the title, but top 3 or pos 2?

01 Jan 2017 08:09:23
G. neville wanted to see us pull a result not playing at our best, hopefully that suffice for him! Not that hia opinion really matters!

01 Jan 2017 09:11:35
Why worry about what Ratman says. The best moment of 2016,watching him fail at Valencia.

01 Jan 2017 09:17:29
We've dealt with quite a bit of pressure recently.
Most times we've gone out 9 points behind with a game in hand and won.
We're not letting Chelsea get away quite so easily. Hopefully Senegal get trashed in the AFCON and Mane can come back for the Chelsea match 😉.

01 Jan 2017 09:25:54
Ye ron, hard to know what mentality the lads really go into each game with given we've played after chelsea a lot recently. But either way they have responded well.
