Messi shd remain in Spain and do his wonders. He had a very terrible game - quiet for 90mins.

He's a lightweight:0)

20 Feb 2013 23:16:42
Ac milan played fantastic, they had pace, tactics were spot on and game plan which worked for them but 2nd leg will be a different ball game.

Thought last time Chelsea got a 2-2 there. It's all about character and playing as a team.

Barca have shown in the past that they struggle against defensive teams who hit them on the counter attack in Europe! It's what barca should expect from now on! It goes to show that if you can keep Messi quiet and make him drop deep for the ball then u have a chance against them! Barca just don't have a plan B at! They are out of the champions league

James

It's going to be different at the nou camp. Bigger pitch so will allow barca to play their game. I still reckon barca will go through at home.

Biggy Ballz

It's only half-time AC Milan are noted for collapsing in the 2nd half:0))

When Liverpool are in the Champions League it just feels like we can actually win it. There's something about our club, I don't know if its the fans the history or just the fact the European Cup runs through our clubs blood, but when we are in it especially at home we can take on anyone. Its something that I don't feel when I watch the other English clubs in Europe. I hope tomorrow is one of them special Anfield nights but more importantly I hope one day Liverpool will rise again so we can get back into that Champions League where our great club belongs. DBol

We aren't all this arrogant are we?

Chelsea and Manchester United have both won the CL since we did.

21 Feb 2013 01:02:01
ha are you kidding, apart from 2005 were you even alive when you won it? and if so those feelings must be long dead. You aren't even in it anymore and may never get there again with teams like everton tottenham and arsenal infront of you. United always play with the kinda passion where you feel they can win any game and you could just feel that chelsea were gna do it last year although underdogs. Check yoself before you wreck yoself Word

In 2005 we won it with an average team with players like Djimi Traore. How many other teams would even get out of the group stage that level of team? And we always seemed to win matches when the odds were heavily against us. Its hard to explain to a non-LFC fan

20 Feb 2013 20:49:03
I don't mean to come off as rude or arrogant but why on earth do we keep talking about the owners!

I like the owners mainly because our owners aren't in the damm newspapers everyday moaning unlike our previous owners our owners are solid i'm so sick of reading about the owners are good because they did this or we want them out because of this reason blah blah blah

Cant we just focus on Football? It's not a business site I've got my studies for that! and i'm guessing they are accurate rather than some of the posts I read

Half time report from the Liverpool U19s last 16 Nextgen game against Sporting Lisbon:

Losing 2-0 at the moment, but on the positive side of things; Ibe and Baio are looking great, Dunn looks like he can dribble and Lussey hit the post. But we've not really created much and there were a few misplaced long balls, especially early on.

They look a good team and have cut our defence open a few times with clever through balls. They dominated for the first 15minutes but since then, Liverpool have started to get back into the game.

Teixiera didn't travel btw

B101

Lost 4-0. Playing a really good team, so it isn't as bad as it looks. Good performance from Ibe in the second half too.

Piledriver

Liverpool actually had 6 first team players out injured or training with the first team, and used this game to give experience to some u18 and u16 players. I thought Adorjan was the stand out performer, but it was difficult for McLaughlin at left back against my man of the match Mane.

I want everyone to read this'
If FSG do sell up, IMO they have built a strong foundation for Liverpool football club. Two years ago, we were facing administraion, had no money to spend, our wage bill was astronomical and we were intoxicated with average players who wouldn't fight for the cause. Not to mention the huge debt!
FSG have made Lfc financially stable, we have a clear goal, they have invested heavily in us and we have a great young squad' we can only go up'
We WILL be great once again#

Big Al

Unfortunately this isn't quite true. Liverpool still have posted losses. The next owner to come in would again have to put their hand in to their own pocket to satisfy our need for new signings.

20 Feb 2013 19:00:36
i think 90% of lfc fans know that they won't score 4 goals tomoro without the 2 ineligible players despite all the media talk

so atleast we should win and watch a good game

red lobster

Why do they need 4 goals?

4 goals? We techbically only NEED to score 2 from open play which we can certainly do

The great thing about football is it's unpredictable. By the Barca just lost 2-0. Messi had a bad game.

Unless youhad bet on milanto win 2-0 at the san siro

then football is kinda boring

20 Feb 2013 18:55:35
Ed's we now Arsenal supporters getting more than a little fed up with their under performing team.
The players also appear to be doing a lot of finger pointing at each other, and there also seems more heat on Arsene Wenger's position at the club than normal.
We also know they have one of the best young english midfielders who supports LFC and quote's Stevie G who is no spring chicken as one of his hero's.
I know this is extremley optomistic but I can think of no better long term replacement for stevie than Jack Wilshere, playing alongside each other for the next few seasons for club and country.
Steve have a little word next time on England duty. He does not strike me as a kid who see's CL a priority and may look at LFC for our long term ambitions.
How much would he cost? please give me as many reasons as possible that this is just a pipe dream.
Dave {Ed001's Note - he is a Liverpool fan? I thought he was an Arsenal fan? Arsenal are not going to let him go cheap and it would be likely Citeh would beat anyone's price for him.}

No chance. He has come through the Arsenal academy.

As much as I would love JW here at Liverpool it certainly isn't going to happen. If JW did become available I think we would have to join a long queue of clubs bidding for him.

He went on record on saying he was an Arsenal fan and wants to live out his career there, easily found on google. End of argument

There is a chance of this happening in the same way as there is still a chance of LFC winning the PL this season

From london, he actually grew up a hammer

Why would Wilshere come to LFC?
He is highly regarded & an integral part of team which plays in Champions league. What better can we offer him to come?

20 Feb 2013 18:47:01
Ed001, what's your thoughts on Conor Coady? Do you rate him and think he could make it into the first team? {Ed001's Note - yes and yes. Once he settles down and plays as he can, I think he would be excellent in our current system, in any of the central midfield roles. He can play the sitting position that Lucas mans currently, but he is better when he drives forward and makes things happen.}

He was badly missed in the nextgen game tonight

20 Feb 2013 18:44:30
If Liverpool finish this season in around the 60pt mark we, as supporters, can't fail to recognise this as progress (last season 52pts finish) regardless of people's personal opinion on the manager, players etc. I think some fans need to get their head out of the clouds and look at the bigger picture, especially when having a go at Rodgers. 58-60pts should be a minimum and anything else a bonus, peace!

Ciario80

Agree with this. The progress may not be huge but if the team keep progressing by 8 points every season then in 4 years time we will finish first/second. A simplistic view I know but as we all know it took Ferguson 4 years to win the title and I don't think he took over man u in as bad a situation as BR took over LFC

4yrs is a lifetime in football, we have to cash in now while we have Suarez.
The nucleas of our players have been together a while Gerrard, Johnson, Skyrtel, Agger, Lucas, Pepe, Suarez, Downing, Henderson and Kelly: At the start of next season it would be the 3rd and more together.
So with the right additions? We have to do it now? Not 4yrs? They'll all be gone? So will half of our supporters, they'll have hung themseves. :- (

kidmillions

Haven't won the league for over 20 years and true fans don't dissapear off because we aren't winning anything. As for the players - none of them are bigger than the club and if they want to move on let them do so for the right price - there are always other top players around - example: Torres leaving and Suarez coming in

20 Feb 2013 18:38:17
IMO if we don't get fourth spot and CL football and with. the abuse FSG do get from some fans, I see them selling up and shutting up'

Big Al

We're not getting fourth. Are you nuts.

20 Feb 2013 18:37:38
hate seeing john aldridge on lfctv as he does talk some rubbish

20 Feb 2013 17:33:41
Can I just say I hope there is one hell of a atmosphere at anfield tomorrow night and get right behind the boys because anfield of late the atmosphere is absolutely terrible, the best game for atmosphere was the 1st Liverpool vrs Chelsea semi final ( Luis Garcia), that night anfield was bouncing, the singing started about a hour before ko and it was electric from start to finish, we need to get behind our team like this every week and show the world yeah ok we might not have the best team In the world but anfield is absolutely electric, C, mon REDMEN. Greeny s. wales

Those days are long gone. The supporters who used to create an atmosphere like that have been priced out of it and now watch on the telly or in the pub.

The only thing that Hodgson said that was spot on, was that he had yet to experience the Famous Anfield support.

Anyone else notice how the last 3 seasons we have started horribly and gathered pace over the second half of the season.

Changing the manager is not going to help this. We will once again have to start from scratch and slowly build bonds between players and the new manager. Same goes for the overhaul of new players.

Players will need time to build relationshipps and lean how to play with eachother.

Sacking your manager and buying 7/8 new players a season is not the way to win anything, look at Chelsea this season, barely top 4 and how much did they spend?

Stop calling for managers heads and acting like spoilt children because we didn't sign messi or ronaldo again this transfer window.

Keep it up and we will end up with nothing. Then you really will have somthing to moan about.

Ooh she's kopped.

Last season we were a lot better in the first half

I take it you're not including last season, because our form from January onwards was relegation standard!

Mate, do you really think we improved at the end of last season?
I think not.
We just need some consistency.

Phooey.

To your first sentence, what the hell happened last season then!?

Actually last season we started well under Kenny, being 4 points off fourth at Christmas. We end the season horribly though, loosing countless games.

Papa G

Gathered Pace? Really. Last season wasn't it something like 13/14 points from the last 11 games : ( (

I'd hardly say that we finished last season at all well! In fact, we were awful in the league in the last half of the season. But, I agree that changing the manager frequently is stupid on so many levels.

Oh like the 2nd half of last season where we picked up 20 out of the last 57 points.

Did you start supporting Liverpool yesterday?

20 Feb 2013 17:10:59
If we can emulate the atmosphere we had on Sunday after scoring our first goal there is no doubt in my mind that we can put more then 2 past Zenit. Anyone else feel goosebumps that night when the crowd were going wild and egging the team on. It kindda shows what one goal and heavy pressure can do to the crowd if we get an early goal and the crowd excited we have a good shot.

"I already know they will be up for the game but if I could urge them to get into the ground as early as they can and make as much noise as they can, then it will make our job an awful lot easier on Thursday because they are so important.

"I'd tell them to remember all of those players and all of those managers who have been quoted down the years as saying how difficult, hostile and good our crowd can be on their night.

"We know we can expect noise, passion, commitment. Hopefully there'll be a top team performance from us - that's how we want it to pan out.

"The fans have got a massive part to play. They are called the 12th man and this is an occasion that the players need them more than ever - especially after the result we got in the first leg. "

Liverpool will need to win by a three-goal-or-greater margin in order to overturn the defeat sustained at the Petrovsky Stadium a week ago.

Gerrard will lead the Reds out at Anfield as they go in search of goals against the Russians and as he emerges from the tunnel, he'll be greeted by a familiar, rousing tune.

"You'll Never Walk Alone is even more special to me now than when I first walked out at Anfield, " admitted the captain. "You understand what it means the older you get and how important it is to the club and to the fans. ''

Stevie G

It is sad that so many of our players, past and present, feel like they have to gee up the fans to wake up the 12th man that used to be the norm at anfield.

It's sadder still that 'fans' on message boards are slating the players for asking for some crowd support.

I read stuff like, "give us a win" or "show us something" and we'll cheer for you. I even see these 'fans' taking this opportunity to have a go at FSG and Rodgers in their responses. Just sad tired sheep bleating back what they've been told to believe.

I'm also noticing a swing back in favour of giving Carroll a chance again. Almost as if all these sheep are being fed talking points at the same time.

How about this; let's support the team. let's go there on Thursday and enjoy ourselves. Rock anfield, put some fear in to the Zenit team and energize the REDS. make it a night to remember simply because we came and truly supported this great club and enjoyed ourselves. Never know, you might enjoy it. Bitch later, if you must, cheer now.

SpudRed

I thought we just had to win 2-0?

It would be naive in the extreme to believe they are all real LFC fans.
There's probably more wums posting on LFC sites than any other.
Because of our history and our failings over recent times we are an easy and favourite target of said wums.

20 Feb 2013 16:26:40
is it just me or is daniel sturridge a lot shorter looking than 6' 2''?

20 Feb 2013 17:40:57
He's as tall as 6. 2'

I heard he forgot to take off his Cuban heels when the doctor measured him

No was thinking that myself, he's more like 6'0" but think the official site has him recorded at 6'2" as you say. Regardless the boy has eased in seamlessly to the team, wait till he really hits a purple patch think there's plenty more to come from him.

Ciario80

Probably because he's 6'0"

20 Feb 2013 16:17:47
Weve scored more goals thab man city (currently)

Theyve had arguero tevez dzeko ballotelli david sulva etc

Weve had suarez and sterling only for most of the season

Rodgers, you are the man

Here's another great fact. There second and were seventh

Theyre second, have you seen there team? Dzeko is on the bench! Lol if rodgers was managing city he'd have the title wrapped up by now

Might as well give it up. We have too many 'fans' that are all or nothing these days.

It was obvious to anyone that knows football that our problem was mainly in attack and scoring goals. We've very obviously addressed that first and our first choice attacking four look ominously good now.

The next phase is shoring up the defense and central midfield to give the young players up front a platform to attack from. It'll come good in time. But it does seem like time is a harder thing to acquire than Radamel Falcao.

As witnessed by tomorrows game we have no cover for upfront.
We need 2 forwards and a keeper.

When you have two forwards ineligible and another injured even man city won't have cover up front

20 Feb 2013 15:58:54
Hi Ed 002,
I know the summer is far far away but if you were to forsee the future, do you think with changes Rodgers is doing and his plans for the next window (whatever it may mean) : a) will Liverpool be in a better financial condition, b) will Liverpool be able to compete for top 4 place next season with much more success than this year
thanks {Ed002's Note - (a) Liverpool are moving toward a better financial standing regardless. (b) Sure.}

20 Feb 2013 15:44:24
Hi ED hope all is well with you and thanks again for doing such a great job with this web site.

Did BR says Assaidi will be in squad for tomorrow's clash against Zenit.? {Ed002's Note - I really don't know.}

He's named in 18 man squad
John a

20 Feb 2013 15:29:26
Fellow Reds
like all of you I'm excited and curious as to who we'll sign in the summer but as you know unless we get top4 (we will if we win the remainder of ALL out league games!). unless we get top4, players will be reluctant to join!
And. now that Borini is out why doesn't BR give Morgan a chance? What happened to giving youngster a chance then? One thing Morgan has is composure in front of goal. a rare talent.
So come BR go for it.

YNWA

Morgan is out on loan

First you say we have to win ALL our remaining games, then you suggest we give Morgan a CHANCE. if we try for top 4 now is not the time to try out inexperienced players
fforestfach red

Actually Morgan has already returned from loan.

Morgan is in lisbon with the next gen group

Morgan was given a chance, he wasn't ready yet. He was given a loan move but he didn't get any games so he got recalled.

For all the slating that Rodgers gets at times, there can surely not be a leg to stand on when it comes to criticising him for not playing youth players or giving them a chance.

Its blatantly obvious that if you're good enough, you're old enough and BR will give you a chance to prove yourself.

Morgan is simply not ready yet for the first team. Doesn't mean he won't become a first teamer in the future, it just means he's not ready yet.

Morgan's playing for the 21s as I write this

Ed002.

You responded earlier that Carroll and Adams cost a little over £36 million. Could you break down what we actually paid for each of them and if we have to pay any other outstanding money.

Thanks {Ed002's Note - I didn't say that.}

The poster he replied to was Adam.

Melbourne spends more time here than the Chelsea page.

100% ed said that. {Ed002's Note - Seems the vegetables are out there again. Do you realise how much you are embarrassing the Liverpool fans?}

20 Feb 2013 14:16:37
St Etienne 77

Might seem strange but this post makes a lot more sense than 95% of the others on here.

Melbourne CFC

Is the St Etienne comment a reference to Ed002

"bright green - stylish without being tasteless or garish"

or to the atmosphere we need tomorrow. David Fairclough.

St etienne is a team in france. it must be a clue that we are signing ben arfa

77 the time of the fab lfc team a real dream team and fans who had no experience of european champions finals and st etienne have fab fans with a tradition of supporting the team who knock you out of the cup and indeed they did as I met lots of them in rome with their red and white colours tag

It's a subliminal message. Anyone reading this will chant non-stop for 90 minutes during the game on Thursday.

20 Feb 2013 13:34:40
Ed 02, are you wearing scary socks? {Ed002's Note - I have green socks on (both feet). It is a reasonably bright green - stylish without being tasteless or garish.}

20 Feb 2013 13:02:03
Hi eds,
With Sturridge being cup-tied for the europa league and Borini now injured, who is going to be a back up striker for Suarez on the bench against Zenit?
Will it be a youngster coming into the team? or using Shelvey as a make-shift striker?
Cheers, Wez {Ed002's Note - I suspect Shelvey.}

I hate shelvey in that wanna be striker role. he's not cut for it. i'd rather use suarez downing and assaidi and use shelvey there.

Totally agree slim. Shelvey just doesn't cut it

Neilp

I think he should play Sturridge upfront wearing a Sterling shirt. You never know

Please nooooooo!

Luis S up front, 5 in midfield, and counter attack.

Last game of the season, hope to see Jamie Carager up there as striker and signing off with a hatrick.

Is he not still the highest goal scorer in the Europa league?

Phooey.
I may be wrong, but he will be up there!

I think shelvey will play there

20 Feb 2013 12:58:44
Out:
Reina 12m
Carroll 17m
Skrtel 15m
Downing 7m
Borini 7m
Coates 6m
Shelvey 4m and buyback option
Spearing 3m
Wilson 2m

In:
Isco 17m
Balasz Dzsudszak 11m
Lovren 9m
Eminike 8m
Williams 8m
Zieler 7m
Diame 3.5m

Rubbish post from top to bottom.
More like:
Outs:
Reina - 10m
Carrol -? (nobody knows the provisions in his west ham contract)
Skrtel - 12m
Downing and borini highly unlikely to be sold.
Coates - 6m
Shelvey is a decent squad player. will stay.
Spearing - 1. 5 m
Wilson out of contract in summer, will leave for free.

I would like to see Ashley williams, Stefan de Vrij, Tom ince and Josep ilicic come in. All realistic and within price range. No one knows which keeper we are looking at, but I hope Simon Mignolet has been shortlisted.

Isco for 17m? What have u been smoking? Double that figure plz, and we are not scouting him anyways.

20 Feb 2013 17:49:00
Sell Downing for 7m?

Downing's never going to be worth the 20m we paid for him. So it's a case of whether he's worth more to us as the cash we can get or as a footballer. And I think we'd struggle to get a better player for 7m, and could very easily get a worse one.

We'd have to be able to find someone on half the wages to even contemplate selling Downing for that.

Ashley Williams? Please God NO!!!!

I'm a 37 year old disillusioned Liverpool supporter who lives in Chesterfield. This is not rumour talk but a bit of an exploration.

Fact number 1, I began following Liverpool as a 6 y/o boy because they were the best team in the land and my local team are crap.

Fact number 2, I've had many a ruck at school/university and even the local with other plastic supporters but, I've stood by beloved Reds defeat after defeat these last few years, often not sleeping at night and wanting to punch someone in the morning.

Fact number 3, If my wife ever walks in front of the TV again during anymore Liverpool matches she will get an opinion from me.

Fact number 4, As I only attend 2 or 3 home matches a season I understand I'm not as informed as others however, I'd be interested in comment in some of my team selection, fantasy decisions below.

Fact number 5, I like many others appreciated what Benitez was trying to do and very nearly did, but his execution wasn't the wisest hence the 'Fact' comments.

Right down to the nuts and bolts. IMHO, we should keep the nucleus of the British Squad and offload some of this foreign tat we keep bringing in. I understand our purse strings are tied but we have wasted our coffers historically.

The Attack
I personally would love to see Carrol, Sturridge & Suarez. With Downing playing something like his potential, the ability to fire crosses into the big man's suede would be absolute dynamite. SAS running amock as they please. Sturridge is our key though, he's the clinician amongst them. With the opposition defence worrying about the aerial threat of the big man and Suarez's twisty, turny, tricksie runs, up pops young Daniel and bags 30 a season. It won't happen but what a strike force. Strength in depth. Ship out Borrini till he gets himself sorted. (he must have something hidden deep away for him to be signed).

The Midfield
We also need that linking midfielder, with flair, creativity etc, I'm hoping Couthinio is the guy, but only briefly watched him. Were missing that Luis Garcia/Benayoun wizardry from Midfield and have been for a while.
Our boy Stevie is good for another 3/4 Seasons, just migrate him further into the midfield to accommodate his range of passing and stopping ability. Look at the heady days of Houlliers reign when he had Gary Mac, dinking the ball 5, 10, yards then unloading up to the guys up top. How old was he can't recall but I'm guessing 36+. Stevie can do this for us and be a master at it if he's used wisely of course.

Then we have Leiva, I recall everyone slating him on here when I first began frequenting the site, but what a turn around becoming one of our consistent performers. He's our Crab passing Ray Wilkins clone (better hair though), we need to concentrate on keeping him. Allen is a squad player but can learn a lot from SG & LL. Keep him as well.
JJS- I was initially impressed, then disappointed then impressed again only for the team performance against Oldham to cloud my impression once more, hopefully one for the future and can learn his trade from SG.
If Alonso is available in the summer we should pull out all the stops and bring him back!

The Defence
I like Enrique & Johnson, their both attacking minded and will bomb on, the very nature of this will leave them vulnerable at times but that's the nature of their game. I don't see any better alternatives and we need to utilise the youth to back up these positions.
CB's. Were pretty suspect from dead balls. Skertal (big lad looks scary but isn't. ) I don't rate him, had a good season last term, but I just think he played consistent in a bad overall team performance. If offers come in take them and strength with some nails British no nonsense do or die traditional Centre Back.
Agger is good, I love the guy tries hard but needs someone decent along side him. Carragher for example. But the lad is hanging the boots up so again see CB description previously. This for me is the key. Get the defence sorted with some British talent or certainly Northern European, if its going to cost a premium then so be it. We need hard lads that understand the league and how it plays, leave the football to the rest of the team.

Finally GK.
I loved Reina, thought he was one of our more reliable seniors. Just not sure anymore. I'd suspect that if a bid comes in from Spain that he would probably say good bye. It would be a shame, but life moves on and we need an English speaking replacement that can boss that defence about. I mean really give it to them. And please no more Zonal marking, it's rubbish.

Thanks for reading and any idea's on the CB's would be good. Ps. Not seen that much of Williams from Swansea to comment. (I was probably thinking of Shawcross when I was writing this).

Brookwald.

20 Feb 2013 13:41:09
i don't understand. why do we need caroll if are playing 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3.
both requires skills, hold up. pace. and excelent finishing abilities.
unfortunatly carol scores most goals with head.

can he atleast be a under performing giroud who cost arsenal 11 mill?
or an awful looking torres at chelsea.

he is not the player we would have ever wanted.

My wife hates football and dances in front of the telly, asking me would I sooner watch her or the footy? Jeez!
She's put on a bit weight lately, so I've had to get a bigger telly:0)

Yep. I've been to Chesterfield. Understand your pain.

Is it just the spire that's twisted?

I agree with you millions,

ed.
can you please shed some views on ma doubt.
Arsenal were the team who started this youth policy. one for the future.
Yesterday. I found only wilshere in their team?
where has all dissaperaed.

we are exactly in the same position.
atleast they were in CL year in year out.

Afraid we also might loose so called future stars to club who fight for trophies. year in year out.

I feel sad for wenger. he made some players. stars. and they all are with clubs who fight for titles.

FSG need to udnerstand this clear.
Loyalty do exist. but when club like barca. real. bayern. comes after you. people become professional.

We need CL ASAP.

Very true

20 Feb 2013 13:19:31
Arsenal are a bad example as they refuse to put back into the kitty, something our owners thus far have done well!

Look up the term 'exactly' Harry.

As you point out, Arsenal have been in Champions League every year, but still loose all their best players. then why will being in the champions league keep ours? {Ed002's Note - I am not so sure they will be next season.}

20 Feb 2013 13:37:58
but common. they have money,, resource. and academy. but still failed misserably at the hands of bayern. and am sure. they would have got beaten by atleast 10 teams of current 16 in CL.
they are poor this seaosn in CL. so as domestic.

I suspect a bid for wilshere in soming summer.

havnet seen one youth product apart from wilshere in their team.

suso, sterling. ilbe. if we don't attain the minimum dream of a footballer to play in CL. people will move out.

Not winning anything with fabregas nasri wilshere song van persie walcott vermaen clichy, etc in your team is bad management they had a chance kept failing and that is why they left

Never thought I would say this, but I feel sorry for Arsenal (still vividly remember the 2-0 league victory when they stole the league from us - still hurts). They are going the same way as us, but for different reasons. Like us, they have lost some top-class players and they are looking unlikely to qualify for CL next year. That may cause an exodus of players.
It's a real shame this season that we have not taken advantage of their plight to get a cheap 4th place - shows just how bad a season we have had when spurs and everton are above us

Ed02 - what was the announcement you referred to, to happen on Wednesday please?

Have searched it & read all posts from Monday and can't find anything conclusive

Was it a rumor that never came into fruition? {Ed002's Note - I did not refer to any announcement. It was all in response to Twitter reports of an interview with Mike Jeffries regarding teh potential sale of the club - and it was months old and related to the valuation of teh club beinga ssessed last summer - which you already knew of. All that is happened is someone had raised this issue again - probably because the club's value has again (since Christmas) been assessed.}

Ed002 you were asked a question about FSG and a possible sale you suggested that would be a question better suited for Wednesday. today. So what's the deal why was the question better suited to today rather than Monday? {Ed002's Note - Because I was in France most of Monday.}

20 Feb 2013 10:46:36
Hi eds,

So Wednesday is here, what this news that we are waiting for and the Ed002 said he could chat more about on Wednesday? {Ed002's Note - I have a little more time so will try and answer any questions about the owners having the club' value re-assessed in respect of what return could be expected from a stock market floatation.}

So the FSG are considering floating us on the market? {Ed002's Note - As far as I am aware they are not looking to do that at this time, but they have established teh likely return they wopuld get if they did.}

Would they get a return on their investment Ed002?

Melbourne CFC {Ed002's Note - My understanding is that the valuation is such that after costs they would probably not get their total investment back at this time.}

I am against this sort of language generally but the only term I can think of is LOL.

Melbourne CFC

Would they even get their initial investment back? {Ed002's Note - Yes, there is no doubt about that.}

Ed002, 2 questions! If the valuation of the club was more and Fsg would have got their full investment back, would they be more inclined to float the club asap?

Secondly, It seems to me that Fsg will only look to float the club whenever that may be. Have they made any effort to find an investor to buy or will they do so in the future?

The Irish Rover {Ed002's Note - (a) They would only float the club if tehy wanted a quick out I would think. (b) "Investor" is a misunderstood term. If they sell a quarter of the club the money goes to them not the team.}}

Hi Ed002,

Do you think that the owners would sell if the opportunity arose?

Do you think that with all FSG are doing Liverpool will be in a good position when the FFPR come in?

Finally not Liverpool related, if Bayern give Pep the reported $240m to spend in the summer how will they meet the FFPR & where does the money come from? (I know that's 2 questions really)

Thanks for your time Ed, its much appreciated.

Crooky
YNWA {Ed002's Note - (a) Perhaps. (b) They will be fine - perhaps a strongly worded letter. (c) €278M euro - and they will say they are rebuilding and going in the right direction. They too might get a strongly worded letter.}

Why is everyone quick to get rid of Carroll, personally I think we can now get the best out of him.

1) He is not the big name anymore and the pressure to perform is off as we have other options so he will need to get his hunger back to gain that first team place.

2)We don't need him as a first teamer we have that in Sturridge but he can either fight for it or become a good substitute for last 20 mins who will bully tired defenders.

3) How many crosses have we put in recently where he could be getting his head on. Personally I think even if he got one goal every two games it would be crucial as a second string striker.

4)We have another attacking option when our first style isn't taking effect.

5)We might as well keep him we will never get what we paid for him back otherwise.

6)He is great on form but we rushed him (Lucas/Henderson) now we can give him that time to find his shooting boots that made him a real threat.

He is a great player and we all know what he can do a saying I always stand by might ring true but. " its better the devil you know than the devil you dont".

I would appreciate your constructive replys if you post back no just remember he's not a first team player but he could be a great second team player.

have you seen yesterday. bayern?
look at their strikers.
we nee dtop quality strikers. to compete in CL.
someone like torres when he was with chelsea.

4 players made others looks awful when they were with us.
gerrard. alonso. torres. mascherano.

we need to replace them with quality. not qualdity.

I reckon there is better back up options available for the sort of money we could get for him personally

Bristol Red

Rodgers just doesn't want him end of story. Nothing anyone can do about it his replacement is here in Danny and not a bad one at that. I do agree Rodgers was very harsh on him and it looks bad on the club, but maybe there was more to it.

First of all I don't think he is premiership quality let alone Liverpool quality.
Why would be give up £10m-17m just
to have him as a bench warmer?
Last of all - if he would be prepared to be what you foresee him being, what would that say about his ambition?

20 Feb 2013 12:36:06
I never agreed with sending him out on loan in the first place. The problem he has at Liverpool is nobody understands his price tag. We negotiated a deal with Chelsea and Newcastle that we wanted Carroll + 15m for Torres.
After that, Newcastle and Chelsea did all the money negotiations. Newcastle said Jump, and Chelsea said how high! So Newcastle slapped a 35m price tag on Carroll as they knew Chelsea were desperate for Torres. This meant (due to our part of the deal) that if Chelsea wanted Torres, they had to pay us 35m + 15m which = 50m.

Carroll didn't cost us 35m. That was just the fee we paid due to Chelseas desperation/negotiation.

If you don't believe me, google John Henrys interview shortly after the transfer window Carroll was signed. I've explained this hundreds of times. Until people start to understand Carrolls fee, he will never get a fair crack at LFC; and that's a shame because he's ten times the quality of Borini, and a very unique style of forward.

Carroll was sent out on loan the summer just gone for turning up to training drunk though, so arguably, he blew his chance here? I'd personally like to see him given one last chance in Pre-season, as Carroll could be (as you say) a great back-up option for us, and Sturridge should take some of the pressure off him to start banging them in every week. Carroll won't peak until he's about 30, so why sell him now, when he's potentially a monster of a forward to have in our ranks? I'd say the balls in his court to start preforming, change his lifestyle, and change his atttude. The potential has always been there.

YNWA! (Adam) {Ed002's Note - You have been misled or misunderstood something somewhere down the line with this story with talk of Chelsea and Liverpool negotiating etc. Adam and Carroll cost Liverpool a touch over £36M.}

I think it looked worse for the club to spend 35 mil on an unproven player then realizing we made a tremendous error and shunning him after he didn't live up to it. I'm not saying we treated him right, because we really didn't. Hopefully he can raise some value for himself at west ham so we can recoup as much as that massive mistake as possible this summer.

I agree he is a different option for us, but the time for convincing looks over for BR.

I think he isn't skillful enough and too slow for BR's style of play. We got mugged big time by Newcastle. I hope we sell him for at least the 17 million that has been reported in the press.

If that's the case Ed, I apologise, but these are John Henrys words. I watched the interview on LFC TV. If he was lying, or distorting the actual negotiation process, I apologise.

"The fee for Torres was dependent on what Newcastle asked for Carroll, " Henry said, explaining that Liverpool wanted Carroll, plus 15m, to replace Torres. Together with the 6m sale of Ryan Babel to Hoffenheim, that effectively financed Liverpool's 22.8m signing of Luis Surez, meaning the club bought two strikers but net, spent almost nothing. "The negotiation for us was simply the difference in prices paid by Chelsea and to Newcastle, " Henry said. "Those prices could have been 35m [from Chelsea for Torres] and 20m [to Newcastle for Carroll], 40 and 25 or 50 and 35. It was ultimately up to Newcastle how much this was all going to cost. They [Newcastle] made a hell of a deal. We felt the same way. "

There's a section of the interview, just to prove i'm not lying. Whether John Henry was or not, I don't know.

YNWA! (Adam) {Ed002's Note - He was simplifying the matter and I don't see where he said "Newcastle and Chelsea did all the money negotiations".}

I totally agree, I would have kept him to begin with. People said he wouldn't fit the system but I think that's a load of old carp. The downside to having a big lad in the team is lazy defenders and midfielders seeing it as an easy option to go for the long ball up top instead of playing it out from the back.

I'd be happy to see him return and give us another dimension against the more physical teams, some one who can get in amongst the cb's and create space for Suarez/sturridge etc. plus gives you an arial threat at set pieces.

It's not his fault we was stupid enough to pay £20m over the odds for him.

what loads of rubbish.
caroll and torres deals are different.
chelsea paid too much. so did we paid.
chelsea had,, have and will ever have money.
we never had. and probably we have dried all our money.

should ahve accepted and kept the torres money with us.
y on earth did we paid that sort of money.

I think he is comes in elite group of most expensive strikers of all time.

with under 5 gaols to his name.

20 Feb 2013 13:38:19
I suppose technically he doesn't use those exact words ed. But how could Chelsea and Newcastle negoatiate a deal that hinges on their valuations of two players, without even contacting one another? If my assumption that they spoke is wrong, then my apologies. I'm not claiming to know everything about the deal, just extracting what I can from John Henrys interview.

My original point is simply that Liverpool Valued Carroll at 15m less than they valued Torres, and we just paid what we did accordingly with what Chelsea paid us, making Carrolls fee look god awful on our part. When in fact, we got a young target man and 15m for a past it cripple. Regardless of whether Chelsea and Newcastle negotiated with eachother at some level.

Thanks for your replies though, I appreciate your input on the subject :)

YNWA! (Adam) {Ed002's Note - They didn't negotiate Adam. Whichever way you look at it, Liverpool paid a little over £36M for Andy Carroll.}

You would like him to just be a sort of part time 20 minute, £35 Mil, £80k a week striker? Good thinking batman!
You'll have us bankrupt.
Get whatever money for him and get rid, great in the air! my asp!
Matt Smith the young lad from Oldham is a better header of the ball than Carroll.

2005 can't recall use having top strikers , will and desire can go a long way.

I seem to remember Chelsea bid 40 million plus Sturridge for Torres, was there any truth to that eds {Ed002's Note - I would ignore the number but there was consideration at one time that Sturridge could have been used in a transaction.}

Carroll will never fit into this team as he's got no pace. In fact, he never really fitted into Kenny's team either for the same reason.
Off load him for whatever price and take the loss

Hi Eds, fellow reds,

LFC are reported to be organizing a massive Haarlem shake for before the game so if you there give it loads. they are trying desperately to help the dyre atmosphere of late. should be fun

Really. How funny would that be

It has been running round my mind about LFC fans owning LFC since last night when I read Bayern are owned 82% by fans also Barca are owned by fans, both these clubs are arguably two of the best in Europe at the moment. So why did this idea never materialize when H&G where on they way out. I'm thinking RBS would have thought of this as a messy option and a straight deal with FSG was better on there part. Can the Ed's shed any light on why it didn't happen and if they think it would be still possible if FSG were to consider selling or even selling 80% {Ed002's Note - It is not quite as simple as you think and it is not the fans per se that own either club. The closest you would get to fan ownership in England is a stock exchange floatation but if that were to happen, in all probability the club would move in to the hands of institutional owners (insurance companies etc.) buying most of the shares, but it would perhaps open the door to a small proportion being sold to individual investors.}

So it would be best for let's say SOS to create a company with let's say 500k shareholders and then the company created by SOS would make an offer for the club on behalf of the shareholders. We have a fan base that's just massive, bigger than most others around the world so I would have thought that this is a valid option. Just thinking out loud here {Ed002's Note - No it is not an option.}

I think it did once, Phil Thompson maybe brought it up 100000 fans buy £5000 each= £500mil it's getting that together tho.
Kp

SOS, is that the Spirit of Shankly nutters?

It has to be an option? ya can't just rule it out point blank.

KP its a pipe dream, it will never happen.

Nutter's?

Ah come on now. First supporters union ever created in UK. It was started by the group shareLiverpool then sons of shankly joined with them became spirit of shankly and there long term aim is for fan ownership. just wondering what went wrong surely we have a large enough fan base to so it.

So 500k fans buy the club.

Then what? FSG are ploughing in money as it is. It's not a case of buying the club and everything is hunky dorry.

You have to finance the running of the club too. Germany don't have the ridiculous scenario we have with billionaires financing rivals.

Football as we know it in this country would have to change dramatically before it's a viable option.

I short, forget it.

How do those clubs function as a structure and how do they find their money, ed?

Something I always wondered. {Ed002's Note - I am not going to try and explain how the function but they have income from advertising, matchdays, prize money, television etc the same as other clubs. Barcelona additionally carry a significant dept (perhaps 50% of their value) and are now very much in to the sell-to-buy position. Both clubs turn over significantly more than Liverpool and Bayern Munich will be looking to refresh their squad this coming year.}

Just reading of the 50 + 1 rule in German football.
What happens after every season ed, is there an AGM at which things are voted through?
If you had a large institutional shareholder (say BMW), who owned 49%, I presume they'd have a block vote?
So they'd only need 2% of the rest to pass a motion. And there could be lobbying, commercial coercion, PR campaigns. It could all get messy. But it seems to work for them, as does Proportional Representation in their politics.
I'm not sure that would translate to us over here. {Ed002's Note - The rule exists for clubs being "sold" in the future and is there, fundmentally, to protect from foreign ownership arriving and creating an imbalance. Similar rules exist in the USA for Sports businesses. The clubs that were already in breach of the rule when introduced are exempt from it. There are perhaps not the amount of motions or proposals made that it is an issue.}

Yes we your right we might not be able to match the other clubs that are used as personal toys, but we are not matching them now either. and never will under FSG. SO WHERES THE PROBLEM??????

How would transfers be funded? Don't we ask the owners to dig deep at the minute surely a fan ownership would set us back financially.

Fester

SOS have their own agenda and look to undermine anyone who doesn't agree with thime so yeah I would go as far as saying nutters!

{Ed002's Note - And infiltrated by a couple of neo political groups and at least a couple of journalists.}

With regards to recent lost about how Bayern attack corners:

I completely agree. I remember in youth football, my team had a very good corner system.

5 /6 of us stood out of the box.
Me in the far corner of the 18yrd box cus I was very small, and 4/5 bigger lads on the edge of the box evenly spread apart. When the corner was taken, one player ran at the keeper, one to the front stick, one to the back stick, and the best header just judged the flight and went straight for the ball. My job on the back stick was to fire in any excessively deep corners, or put it back in from the opposite wing, should it be missed. The last player on the edge would wait there for any knockdowns or poor clearances, leaving is with 4 players back defending (the wing backs, quicker of the two centre backs, and the midfielder who couldn't hit a barn door acting as a sweeper in between their box and the half way line.

I'm going to be honest, marking is much poorer in youth football, but you should've seen the defenders faces when 4/5 players charge at them.
A. They don't know who to mark.
B. They panic and lose their man.
C. They lose the aerial battle because we had a run up.
I bet we scored 25 goals a season from corners. At 5ft 5at the time I still managed 5 goals a season from corners. So I agree with you (kidmillions I think?) That the best way to attack corners, is to sack off the hustle bustle, and just charge the box down and attack the ball!

YNWA! (Adam)

There is the zone defense for corners three players hold the 6yrd box, 1 on each corner and the middle and all other players mark the opponents, usually also a player on each post. The guy in the middle of the 6yrd attacks the ball

Fiorentina sporting director Daniele Prade said: 'We like Fabio Borini, but it's hard to see that Liverpool will let him go. '

This is a deal i'd like to see happen, even though I have hoped he would produce he isn't capable of playing for LFC. Send him off to Aqualaini & co

Akillani faraway better than Charlie Adam, Allen, shelve, downing, and etc, wy they don't take, borini, Allen, and the rest of our flops, so this way we learn our lesson.

How can you say that? When has the kid had a chance? He has been injured and played out of position, at least his best position, since he came to us. I for one would like to see him get a proper chance when he's back.

20 Feb 2013 12:24:05
i really don't know why do we buy kids?
If somehow we get to manage top4.
we would be hammerd by clubs like bayern. dortumand. real. barca.

Dont know its been 4 years.
when are we going to replace. torres and alonso?
33 goals in one season.
24 in second season.
96% pass accuaracy for alonso.

I'll be over the moon if we get 8 to 10 million for Borini. He has been unlucky with injuries but I don't think he's suited for the premier league and to be honest just not good enough for us. He does have the right attitude but that's not enough. 1 goal in his first season and we paid 10 million or something for him. FAIL

Red PG

Jay Spearing is better than Aqualaini!

Borini to me is just another Ngog, you wouldn't mind if he ran around and burst a gut but he us far too lazy and has not stood out in any of the games he has played for us this season

Most people have seen enough of Fabio Borini to know that he will not be the the prolific scorer that we need and were hoping for.
Why people keep hoping he will set the PL alight I don't know- more in hope than in expectation.

I would love to see him get better quickly so that he can be sold

20 Feb 2013 09:49:23
Hi Eds forgot to add but just wanted to ask if you rate Mohamed Sissoko, yes, the one who played for us. Would he be a good signing for the DM position and how much would he cost if we became interested?

Red PG {Ed002's Note - I don't see him returning to Liverpool.}

It's a funny old world isn't it? Arsenal lose to Bayern, and FSG get stick for it!

This was our golden opportunity to get at the top of the league, they including purslow, ayre, miss that on bringing rodgers instead of Benitez, just rodgers flop signing says it, and he want a overhaul of player but his flop signing are mention it not (borini, Allen, etc. ), from the lack of knowledge from fsg on football matter, we need a urgently a manager hu can our directors of futbal, chairman, club runner, and all that skills, I cannot find it on rodgers, its only 1 answer, BENITEZ, Chelsea despite hating him took, now our chance its even toughter. Unfinish bussines sud be finished, and this its how our challence should start.

Eds - can you stop running people's posts through an English to Polish, Polish to Magyar, Magyar to Japanese and finally Japanese to English translation please. It makes perfectly sensible and well written posts come out like absolute bo**ocks.

Could someone please translate what the fella above me said.

No - it was in Polish

-------------------------------------------------

I think its trying to communicate lol.

I'll try a waffle to 'sense' translate:

"Last summer was our Golden opportunity to start challenging for the League. Rafa Benitez was after the Liverpool job and FSG ignored his advances.
Rodgers signings Borini and Allen are evidence that he is not up to the standard of Benitez.
The appointment of Rodgers is also evidence that FSG are clueless on footballing matters. They should have appointed Rafa because he has the ability to run our club as manager, director of football, chairman and he's got bare skills.
Chelsea despite hating Benitez, took a chance on him, and now they will win the league, making it even tougher for FSG to bring him in as manager. He has unfinished business at Liverpool fc. Appointing him is the starting point of our transition. "

Well. it reads okay now, but still struggling to find any sense haha!

YNWA! (Adam)

I think you are too harsh on Brendon. His last 2 signings have been (on early indications at least) quite good. I think we should remember that we are buying for the future and that the lads that have been under performing (recently) or just had bad luck (Borini) may prove themselves yet. Hendo and Downing are prime examples.
I could list a number of Rafa bad buys - but you know, most managers have good and bad buys - you just don't know how a player is going to fit in to the club culture, with his fellow players, in a new town/country etc. Remember, Rafa also wanted to buy Barry - for Alonso! (Almost a criminal offence).
I like Rafa - but right now Brendon is our manager and I will support him until he isn't (which I hope is far in the future). Yes, he may be a little inexperienced for such a 'big' club but I think he may turn out good.
As an aside, I think that Chelsea winning the title this season is about as likely as me winning the lottery.

Hey gents. I was just wondering, does anybody know how N'gog Os doing in the championship? Replied would be much appreciated

I was in that much of a hurry to reply to this and quash anythoughts of Ngog returning I accidentally pressed agree. So poor that he makes Milan barros's Liverpool career look prolific. Robbie Keene was a million times better when he was at Liverpool and we got rid of him because he couldn't/didn't score enough.

8 appearances and 6 goals for bolton in the championship so not a bad return.

apparently Fulham tried to sign him in the summer as well. never knew that.

got this from wikipedia mind.

Seen him a few times playing for Bolton and he has scored but he is still a poor player. The guy has no pace, no strength, no footwork and scoring is still a hard task for him. On more of a lighter note, Spearing looks like he's done well and got a lot of games under his belt but unfortunately for him there is no room for him anymore at LFC.

FowlerGod.

P. S its 13 goals in 5 games now for Ngog.

5 goals in 13 I meant.

Just my thoughts on what will be a managerial merry-go-round this summer.

Mourinho to PSG or Man City

Arsene Wenger or rafa to Real Madrid

Jurgen Klopp to Arsenal or Chelsea.

Klopp will 100% not be moving to Chelsea, I think he will stay at Dortmund, Rafa will probably end up at Real Madrid and Mourinho at Cty where he will already inherit a very good team and have silly amount o money to buy the title as he did at Chelsea.

BigD who do yo think will get the Chelsea Job?

JM is wanting the Man U job I reckon, if he took the City job I don't think he would be welcome at Man U when the time comes.

Myk

Conte will get the Chelsea job.

Plymouth Red.

Warnock to Chelsea, Ferguson to retire in June only to take over City in August. Mourinho will take the United job but will be sacked after 2 games as Woy declares his desire to come to United as a player manager. Heard all this from a very reliable source on twitter, but keep it quiet yeh.

NOT sure conte will go to chelsea leaving behind his invincibles plus they already have llorente in pocket. probably pellegrini, laudrup, schushter have a decent chance at chelsea job. just a guess

i think all these fans moaning about fsg need to have a bit of a memory check 3 years ago we were nearly in administration. when something so big is going in the wrong direction it takes time to stop it turn it around and then get it back up to speed have patience guys we have got it turned around now we will start moving again. just remember it took city 3 years to get to the top even with crazy money.
