It's lovely when they happens Wexford.
I'm very much into my Carp fishing and go to France a couple of times a year ( for a week at a time ) with a good friend of mine.

Last year, Cameron Brannigan was fishig the same complex ( in France ) as my friend and his son. They ended up getting chatting and pretty much spent the week having a kick about on the bank, chatting LFC and he signed his shirt.

They are now friends on Facebook and keep in touch. it's great stuff.

By the way, I used to supply menswear to B Corcoran's in Wexford ( assuming that's where you are from ) visitors the town a number of towns, lovely place!

The son in law to the owner of the shop is a big LFac fan too!

Matip has clearance to play for us during AFCON, wonder if he'll start tomorrow.

20 Jan 2017 22:28:03
Dont think he will start, as Klopp will have set up his defence with practise drills, but this is great news, and a real lift for the club .

21 Jan 2017 07:41:29
He'll be needed next week

20 Jan 2017 21:50:21
Just wanted to say I for one am delighted at the return of Gerrard to the club I believe his experience will be priceless for the young players.

Welcome home Stevie G!

21 Jan 2017 03:39:41
A role at the academy is a good fit and hopefully he can help push the youngsters on in their development.

20 Jan 2017 22:48:57
Hopefully he is more professional with theses younger guys than he was reported to have been with the younger guys during his playing days.

21 Jan 2017 10:41:22
Considering he will be a youth coach, I would be staggered if he didn't try to treat the players well.

20 Jan 2017 21:46:26
Matip can play! Yes! Come on Liverpool let's go get this title! YNWA!

20 Jan 2017 22:08:50
Just the boost we needed, hope he plays tomorrow in lieu of Klavan.

21 Jan 2017 07:13:37
With you there Higgins, just need to get Origi and Studge amongst the goals again.

20 Jan 2017 21:38:36

Looks like at least another 10 days for a decision on Matip. FIFA are looking like having an investigation.

Believable0 Unbelievable10

20 Jan 2017 21:23:59
FIFA probably need the 10 days just to get the thumbs out of their backsides!

20 Jan 2017 21:37:14
Matip is now free to play apparently, charges dropped.

20 Jan 2017 21:39:03
Fifa have said he's eligible!

20 Jan 2017 21:41:16
He has got clearance to play from tomorrow.

20 Jan 2017 18:57:28
That's harsh Ed 25. It's good he's back in some capacity. The connection with Liverpool is important and him being there could attract promising young talent.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - its not a bad thing von but you would think that with the money he,s got he would crack a smile now and again..

20 Jan 2017 23:39:53
I've always thought the same #25

20 Jan 2017 18:00:10

20 Jan 2017 18:23:59
Well at least Ken is a Liverpool fan, so that's a good start.

20 Jan 2017 18:24:52
Not going to happen

20 Jan 2017 18:50:31
It's true boys! LFC dinner lady just told me that she seen him and Klopp sharing currywurst and having a cheeky stein. I can't believe it but she seemed to innocent to lie.

Seems a done deal can't wait to see ken aguero pull on the famous shirt!

20 Jan 2017 18:56:37
Ah we love talking about Aguero in here! ;-)

20 Jan 2017 20:43:14
I have it on good authority he is on his way City are happy to do business with us after getting such a bargain with Sterling.

20 Jan 2017 20:38:45
Is Ken Aguero joining the playing staff? Awesome, we need his shorts for luck.

20 Jan 2017 21:25:47
Update . Ken hasn't been seen at Anfield, Melwood or sharing a Mcflurry with Klopp.

20 Jan 2017 22:32:10
Will he bring his lucky pants with him

21 Jan 2017 02:15:12
Sanchez over aguero anyday

21 Jan 2017 07:50:04
We're better off targeting Ben Aguero

20 Jan 2017 17:33:07
We often talk about how players do and don't work in certain systems which begs the question, should the system be designed to suit the players or should the players that most suit the system be picked? For Liverpool 13/ 14 is a great example of the former, Rodgers set up to get the best out of Suarez. Klopp, however, picks the system first and then gets the players to adapt to it.

At City the rumour is that Aguero can leave as Guardiola doesn't think he fits but Aguero is debatably the best striker in Premier League history, surely the manger should adapt to get such a good player into his team?

Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable5

20 Jan 2017 18:34:14
Aguero isn't even "arguably" the best striker in premier league history .

{Ed025's Note - compared to suarez hes a no mark mate..

20 Jan 2017 19:07:10
To your original point however I am a massive advicate for bringing in players that will suit your system. Purely because the system is essentially your identiry yea? So then establishing an identity to me is one of the first steps in develooing the club and then you need the right players to deliver that.

I think you need flexibility too in terms of tactics etc - defending when you need to, long ball when you HAVE TO and so forth. But that our primary system is etablished!

20 Jan 2017 19:00:43
I truly do not believe BR set anything up intentionally to suit anyone. He stumbled across lightening in a bottle midway thru that title run and then the next season he REEEEALLY showed his ineptitude and inability to develop an identity with the players he had once suarez left.

20 Jan 2017 21:03:40
I think you play the system to suit the majority of your best players, not just one, and I think the current system suits us well, relying on hard working players like Hendo, Llalana, Firmino etc.

13/ 14 was a decent example perhaps, however the diamond also was also perfect for Sturridge, Sterling, Coutinho and Hendo so don't think it was just about suiting Suarez.

20 Jan 2017 20:52:46
I agree with Faith. The system is essential because that is the bedrock of a group and a path to success on the pitch. Then we can add the players with the qualities necessary to fit the scheme. Of course, there are small exceptions and tweaks can be made to accommodate very talented players who may not naturally fit the required system.

As for BR's system, it was never his "system". It was Marcelo Bielsa (a god of the high press system) who recommended it to BR during a coaching seminar, as Ed01 mentioned profusely at the time and it worked cos we had the players who could thrive in it. We know it wasn't his system cos the season after, he reverted back to his failed slow, sideways passing stuff that got us nowhere, to the point of him being sacked.

20 Jan 2017 23:19:55
Putney, I am generally a fan of players fitting systems, but within those systems you need a core/ spine of 4 playersand the rest can come and go based on injuries, player sales purchases, or rotations.

Historically most teams IMO were built around a stable core of players who could play a system, or who were good players. Schmeichel, Bruce, keane, cantona
van der sar, ferdy, scholes, rooney.
cech terry, makelele Lampard Drogba
Hart, Kompany, yaya, ageuro.
the other playersaround that spine tend to come and go, without affecting the team, but when you miss one or 2from that spine, the team is drastically affected, none more evident for me than cities failures without kompany and aguero, or cheleas collapse when lampard picked up hisinjuries in 2010/ 11

I would be hesistant personally to build a team around one or 2 players, as you're solely relying on them eprforming week in and outand no doubt, it would give thm a significant ego, as well as being man marked out the game at times. It has been pointed out, Argentina fail when Messi is simply tracked (tagged) by a marker out the game, teams focussed on stopping mcmanaman back in the day and fowler. If you stopped their quality, you stopped lfc.

It has to be said though, systems can be found out, ed002 points to this regarding klopps early success and then ''demise'' after the workaround for his system was discovered. Same with Leicester this year. I think any system should have a plan b and c.

Overall i'd say i'd build a team of player to fit a system rather than build a system or team around 1 player.

21 Jan 2017 03:11:28
I agree with about Rodgers.

Rodgers first master stroke was to isolate and flog Big Andy Carroll because he did not suit his style of play.
His last master stroke was to spend millions signing the big target man Bendeke to add a direct dimension to the group.
Enough said but I still feel sorry for Kenny to have that mule Rodgers belittling his squad.

21 Jan 2017 03:43:08
You play systems and get the players to adapt or bring in players who already fit it. No individual is greater then the team - how many times have we heard Klopp talk about the importance of the collective? It is a team game and the system is what dictates the fluidity of the team - that has to be the priority. I would have thought that any top-class player, like Aquero, could fit into pretty much any system though. Personally I just think Guardiola is doing a bit of a rubbish job.

20 Jan 2017 22:47:08
Glad I generated some discussion. Quick one for rollanfield, Aguero has the best strike rate of any premier league player. If we had that debate he would be included in it.

21 Jan 2017 10:29:17
Ed25, you're being far too nice to us these days, has Mr Klopp made you see the error of your ways? Are you going to do a Carra and switch allegiances? You're tempted aren't you? ;-)

{Ed025's Note - im afraid not super, blues are born mate not manufactured, being a scouser a lot of my friends (and 2 sons) are reds so its hard not to be nice to you, and i must admit i do like klopp because hes a bit of a wierdo and is always upbeat just like me, i do wish the reds well but will be massively disappointed if you win the league, i just wont be able to stand the crowing that would bring...so heres to yet another 27 years of underachievement.. :)

20 Jan 2017 14:41:34
Hi ed02 hope your well. Your usually the voice of reason on here when it comes to Liverpools money situation, I'm wondering why we haven't yet had a sponsor for the new stand? I know you mentioned a while back we were looking but all seems to have gone quiet. From a fans point of view these owners seem to be heading in the right direction after years of poor buidness practice, is that a fair assumption? And do you see a point soon where we will be on a comparative footing with Chelsea and utd? Thanks for your time.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - The club are still looking but sponsoring a stand is not an attractive option. It was originally offered as a package with the training kit to Bet Victor but I don;t know if they would be interested in extending their deal. I think the assumption is fair and the TV money has been the big boost. Getting on equal terms with MU is unlikely but perhaps Chelsea would not be too big a step.}

20 Jan 2017 15:28:39
Thanks for the reply, very clear and hopefully people will respect that and no abuse. I've been going to see them since early 80's and there was a period when KK took over that we could compete for any player and did for a while so it's frustrating, but that's the club's fault for poor management. UTD have always had huge resources to b honest and your right, the only way to get close is a long period of success whilst they struggle. I've lost track ed, where you based these days?

{Ed002's Note - Right now I am in a hotel at Chelsea Harbour in London.}

20 Jan 2017 16:01:25
Pint after work, Ed?

{Ed002's Note - I don't drink pints. My wives and I will be heading for the Bluebird to, as you Brits say, strap on the nosebag later - but first cocktails.}

20 Jan 2017 16:43:01
Chelsea HARBOUR?
What is the world coming to? It was Chelsea Docks when I lived on the New King's Road.
I think you should have a pint and a pickled egg whilst you're throwing some arrows. Oh, and mind you treat that wonder dog proper.
BTW. Thanks for all the information formation you put out on here.

{Ed002's Note - You are welcome. We lived off the Fulham TRoad when we first moved to England.}

20 Jan 2017 17:13:03
Pray tell what you and your wives will be doing with the nosebag ed02, i am an innocent soul and no nothing if such matters.

{Ed002's Note - They will no doubt be building up a vast bill for me to pay. Seems it is the Hawksmoor and not the Bluebird now.}

20 Jan 2017 19:46:18
Are those the names of night clubs or birds? You have such an interesting life ed, ever thought about publishing your memoirs?

{Ed002's Note - They are restaurants - we all need to eat.}

20 Jan 2017 21:35:23
A polygamous lesbian marriage, that is so 2017 ed. As a reader I am sincerely proud.

21 Jan 2017 07:33:00
Hawksmoor is a lovely stakehouse!
Porterhouse is the cut that I tend to go with. Did you get yourself a portion of bone marrow? I can only manage a little before it gets to heavy. Stake and nasal power what I fun night you are in for or you could go nasal power and stake but not sure it will be as enjoyable

21 Jan 2017 07:51:32
That could be a working title for the memoirs " we all need to eat " 😎

20 Jan 2017 12:46:06
What's this I am hearing about Aguero Man City are willing to listen to offers. Can't be true surely.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

20 Jan 2017 13:02:55
From the outside looking in, I doesn't look like Pep really favours Aguero, and his style of play doesn't suit him much for me. I think pep's system needs quite a large tweak to actually work for the premiership.
As it stands though. City have, Sterling, Silva, KDB, GabrielJesus, JesusNavas, Sane, Iheanacho, Nolitoand Aguero fighting for 4 starting positions. It makes sense Navas will go, but possibly some of the other names too. I actually preferred Silva in the deeper role in the 2 games he played there just like pipco has played at times.

I certainly think some of the big names could go (I'd expect Navas to be offloaded at the bare minimum. )

20 Jan 2017 13:05:16
Ed's have been saying this since the summer at least

20 Jan 2017 13:27:41
What do you all think of the the 'get the player to match the system' versus the 'use a system that gets the best out of the players' debate?

Aguero is one of the best Strikers in the world, I think I'm right in saying he has the best strike rate in Premier League history. Surely if you have a player that good you tailor the playing style to suit him rather than get him to adapt to your way of playing.

20 Jan 2017 13:42:03
It's a good discussion Putney. Might be worth making a completely separate thread for it? and leave this one to a city discussion about the player movement If you copy paste it, .

20 Jan 2017 14:21:59
I had a browse at the City rumors page and ED002 did say that Aguero is available for transfer.

20 Jan 2017 14:29:47
One of the best forwards in the world. Someone who will bang 20-30 + a season and you look to sell. Where is a middle-eastern billionaire when you need one!

20 Jan 2017 14:16:02
Isnt Aguero facing the same fate as Sturridge? Individually both right up there, doesn't fit into either system. Expect both to move out in the summer. City will break the bank to land Auba and Liverpool will look for a lesser version of Auba.

20 Jan 2017 15:59:29
Sturridge and Aguero atm are completely different players . stu after his injury has completely lost his pace and mobility which is necessary playing in our system. In fact he can't even take on players.

20 Jan 2017 17:06:02
If I'm not mistaken, Aubameyang has made it clear that it is Real Madrid or bust for him were he to move from BVB. But then, things may change. As great a forward as Kun is, he may not be the right one for the way Pep likes to play, as strange as that might sound. Separate question, would Aguero fit Klopp`s system?

20 Jan 2017 08:57:21
hi Ed, Ed's. just quick question from watching Aspas in La Liga this year it surprises me to see him scoring regularly for Celta and he seems to have upped his game since he left us. I know he was highly rated before he came but what went wrong or was he just not physically up to the standard required for the PL.

thanks.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - he never got a chance to adjust and didn't get the early run of goals he needed to help him settle. He was a little on the lightweight side, but that is something that could very easily have been fixed given time. He just needed to get used to the fact that getting slammed into shoulder to shoulder was not a foul here, like it is in Spain. He always had the ability and most definitely had the workrate!}

20 Jan 2017 11:54:02
thanks Ed just think he might get another chance at a big club in Spain before too long and we might end up regretting letting him go. watching him play I like his attitude

{Ed001's Note - I have regretted that we let him go many times, but the decision was made and he is not a youngster, so it is time for him to enjoy his career in Spain.}

20 Jan 2017 12:26:47
Can't really understand why we would sign a player and then the manager does not back him. I'm pretty sure Rodgers would have asked the club to sign him unless he was a board signing? . Aspas has the ability no doubt and watching him torment Barcelona last year (what a performance by him) also against Real Madrid this week got me thinking imagine we signed him he would cost us 15million+. Good luck to the lad and well done.

20 Jan 2017 12:54:34
He had seriously tough luck in terms of being in a title contention side behind the two best strikers in the league and Sterling, all of whom were playing well in a largely injury free season. It's a shame he didn't get longer than one season to see if he could adapt as undoubtedly he'd have played much more with Suarez leaving and Sturridge's injuries leading to us playing Sterling as the sole striker. Sadly patience seems to be dying in the modern game, a shame because I think he could have been a great signing.

20 Jan 2017 13:06:06
He got jumped on by the fans for being lightweight and going as Ed001 mentioned. Coinciding with this Studge and Suarez formed a good Partnership and the emegergence of Sterling and switch to the diamond to accommodate all 3 didn't leave much room for Aspas. Sadly he also got remembered for ''that corner'' vs Chelsea. I think most fans made their mind up by that point on him.

20 Jan 2017 13:08:52
You have to remember the context of his signing, he came in at the beginning of the 13/ 14 season taking Borini's place in the squad. I always assumed he knew he would only be considered a back up.

20 Jan 2017 13:47:06
I always knew Aspas had the aility as he was already highly rated in Spain before he came to us. But as Ed said, he just couldn't get going for diverse reasons. I have watched him a lot since he went back to Celta and he's even gotten better and better. Don't be surprised if Barcelona sign him eventually as he has tormented them (and lately Real Madrid) for the past two years.

21 Jan 2017 05:00:53
He had a very good pre season but then barely got a look in for games. Never had a good run to turn it around and trying to usurp studge and Suarez at that time was impossible. Why we didn't keep him after Suarez went is beyond me.
