Why oh why did Rodgers spout on about competion for places ie the goalkeeper, took pepe out for a dinner to explain all this etc. why tell us a pack of lies, just tell the truth, ok there's financial constraints to be considered but just be straight forward and don't lie to us we can understand it but if you tell lies about you will lose the support from the fans a lot quicker!

I personally think are transfers will balance this season, the flourish of transfers at the start of the season was covered by the Andy Carroll transfer. There will no more transfers until luis goes and when he does we will spend what will come in for him and we will have broken even in the transfer market and reduced the wage bill in the last couple of years significantly, which is fine except for the smoke and mirrors from the club. Personally I would prefer the truth!

Situations change, maybe Mignolet has turned out better than they expected and they don't see the need to have Reina as 2nd choice?

I know, the owners, ayre and rodgers are not helping themselves or the club by lying, it severly damages respect and all the fans want is peaceof mind

Guys, Reina wants out unfortunately the bids to buy him have either not been forthcoming or not meeting the valuation either way he does not want to stay that has been made clear.

BR made it clear from the start we need quality through out the team to create competition for places obviously this takes time to build the squad where we have multiple players to compete for each position and I believe BR has done great job so far combining talent and youth (first manager to utilise youth system) since Stevie came through. And times are looking good for our young players :)

In terms of additional players coming in BR has stated we are looking to bring additional players in to strengthen the first team, I would prefer to hear nothing till we make the signing as media frenzy usually makes the players prices go up.

Give BR a break 2nd season will see the making of his dreams and plans come to the fore. top 4 is this seasons goal I am happy with our current progress.

Jules in Australia

Agree0 Disagree0

When I saw Rogers say Liverpool wanted competition in the GK area I instantly thought "rubbish".

At the time Barcelona were interested in Reina but their interest cooled when Valdes decided to see out the last year of his contract. The quotes about competition for places were to say to Barca that we didn't need to sell and to raise the price.

What I think the fans need to realise is that the stuff that goes on the website is not only to the fans, but there are agendas that are put across too. Don't believe everything you read. think if there is a reason behind the quotes before taking them as gospel. These lies are little white lies that will benefit the club so long as the fans don't get rustled.

MIngolet played only one game for us. Just one game.
BR doesn't have a clue what's going on inside.
What was he talking to Reina when they had a dinner together?.

i think the reason of pepe going to napoli on loan is because at the end of the loan we could have him back and we can sell him where in italy he could make a bigger name for himself and we will get more for him, or if barca want him next season we might be able to get a fringe barca player in exchange, that's after the money we save on his wages and money from napoli for the loan, I think its a great move for us and pepe

football has changed, just look at chelsea/man u/ man c and abroad barca/madrid/bayern/psg they are the top teams and the 1 and only reason is money. milan used to be the best run club for many years that stopped 3 years ago when berlusconi started giving less money. dortmund build a good team and got were they wanted to be and now they will fall apart because the teams with money will buy their best players. we need to extend the ground asap, that's the only way we get back. let's say we buy 2/3 young players and they became stars we would have to sell them. we can build a team to get were we want to be but we can not keep them unless we generate more money.
money does not solve all problems but teams like manc/psg and chelsea will buy the best players including ours. we are 1 of the biggist clubs in the world but we will stay were we are without a bigger ground. buys like alberto/aspas could work out but, toure is a clever buy but we need to strenghten the back. our problems were at the back last season going forward we were fine malta

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No ac milan were well run until they did what we were doing under hicks and gillette- spending beyond our means and handing out stupid wages to a huge squad we didn't need. that's what broke milan.

Anonymous woolback {Ed001's Note - all caused by Silvio Berlusconi.}

Now it seems AC Milan are doing something similar to us with their youth system and buying young quality homegrown players.

Agree0 Disagree0

To the OP,
You can take Barca and MU out of your list. Both these teams used their youth systems to get them to the top. The clubs have spent big over the last however many seasons due to their success. It didn't start out like that.

i agree with peoples views on reina that there's no piont having sum1 on the bench on over 100k a week but I've seen today that napoli were put off qpr's cesar when they found out he was on 45k a week didn't want to mach it. so I don't think reinas move will be straight forward just hope we don't have to contribute to his wages like we did for aqualini!. redman matt {Ed001's Note - the deal with Cesar was all fine, it was QPR's asking for a loan fee that killed the deal, nothing to do with wages. His wages are a lot higher than 45k anyway, so that just shows what utter nonsense it is.}

ive heard suarez has agreed to sign a new deal with no champions league release clause init which means he will be allowed to leave next season if we fail to qualify for CL again

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Is it? Look how we did after chistmas, when we brought in coutinho & sturridge.

We get off to a good start we will be much closer.

BR has improved our home form, we had massive wins away, scored more goals & played attacking exciting football.

If he can improve our defending (especially at corners) and improve results against the top teams we will be in the mix for 4/5th.

And remember there is a long way to go in this transfer window yet.

Jimbob

Agree0 Disagree0

For free? no release clause means we we are not obliged to sell at any price.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hmm. No clue if this rumor is true or not, but frankly I'd be a little PO'd if he gets an improved contract in terms of wages and a new clause allowing him to leave easier, particularly since he's going to be banned for 10-15% of the season.

So far LFC have only spent £1m in the transfer market and yet we have to let Reina go for financial reasons, so on that basis not only are we skint but BR has obviously NOT been given any money to spend by FSG and yet they expect a top 4 finish, wishful thinking I say

alan50

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If you read the statement correctly you would know that he said its not financially suited to have reina sitting on the bench earning 110k a week if mignolet can keep him out of the starting xi. Also it is well known reina is frustrated at lack of champions league and was wanting a move so this is a win win and also frees up 110k for more signings. You need to see the bigger picture. We've made 4 signings, 4 very good signings and we've spent 1 mil is that not a good thing? I think it is.

Gazman10

Agree0 Disagree0

The only sensible words.in your post being 'so far'.

Come back when the transfer window is closed, then make a point, if you can.

So far we have brought new players in and got rid of £100k from wage bill, for a player who nobody seems to.want to.buy, and could well end up on our bench all season.

I despair at the so called fans who seem to live for knocking the club and management at every opportunity. How about waiting and seeing what the squad is like at end of window, its not as if there isn't enough time left ffs. Get a grip.

Two different things mate, transfers will be budgeted for. Getting Reina off the bill is more about week to week expenditure I think. Probably best a bit of research is done before asking about money guys, seems to me that's why the eds don't like to discuss it

Alvy

Agree0 Disagree0

Also got rid of Carroll for decent fee and his 100000 wages as well

In response to RDL, although spending more money on transfers compared to UTD the main reason for UTD's success has been their youth setup look at the figures for home grown talent that have come through the UTD ranks compared to ours.

As in my previous posts I believe BR is now utilising our talented youth players much more than previous managers and over the last 5yrs we have seen extended growth of the youth facilities and the youth scouting and training staff

Jules

"RDL, United started to get success by spending big on players, they are now self sufficient, and this helps sustain success as I said earlier"

Smithy, not sure how far back you'd go to validate this, but assuming I haven't fat-fingered something it looks to me like since the 1990-91 season (2 prior to to the Premier beginning when I'd personally say United's success really began), we've spent -342.4M on transfers, they've spent -310.4M. So, it's not that they've spent more than us (quite the opposite) just that they've largely spent more wisely I think.

The last window and this one are for the first time in quite a while I've seen what I think are prudent moves in a positive direction. Sturridge, Coutinho, Aspas, Toure, and to a slightly less extent, Mignolet are, for me, absolutely excellent acquisitions at very good prices. I think Alberto may also fall in that category longer term although I do think perhaps we paid a bit more than we might should have. My point is it looks to me like things are moving in very much a positive direction so I prefer to look at the glass as half-full rather than half-empty.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You clearly haven't watched minolet play very often

Agree0 Disagree0

Not sure if you think I'm over or underrating Mignolet? Personally I think he's a very good keeper and I'm happy to have him. I do think we perhaps paid maybe 1-2M more than we should have, but we wanted him and he wasn't necessarily for sale, so it is what it is- that's what I meant by 'slightly less extent' bit.

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh RDL - your lack of knowledge is amazing - United's success started with the freak time when a number of their youth squad got games for the first team, and blew Alan Hansens words " you win nothing with kids " out of the water- Beckham, Giggs, Neville, Scoles, Butt etc.
Their continued success has been to maintain that core of players, and at the same time spend very big money on players ( often breaking the British transfer record ) to fine tune from season to season, with no wholesale changes.

Appears that Suarez is staying and will be signing a new contract. Should be confirmed in a few days.

Liverpool adding to the squad wasnt dependant on Suarez Sale.

Reinas exit, what BR is saying pretty much reads as, we have had to look at the amount paid to out keeper and address, I.e. get shot of him and bring in someone who costs less per week. So all this competition malarkey was nonsense, it's more trimming.

This transfer window is shocking, we need strength in depth and have brought in players no better than those we have released or sold, is our squad any larger or better? No, are we likely to start this season in better shape? No!

And the borini apologists, stop, he really is a disappointment and I will openly state now that he will not even hit 6 goals this season.

I for one am happy with the squad we have at the momment. We have some really good individuals that are on par with all other stars in the BPL.Suarez, Coutinho, Sturridge, Agger.Lucas, Gerrard even Johnson and Enrique are players that if played on the right position will cut it in any of the other 10 teams in the upper part of the table.
We have some of the brightest tallents in the league too in the face of Sterling, Wisdom, Ibe, Henderson and Rossiter.
Give a look to the new boys too Aspas mostly is a player that may suprise a few this season and you can see this from his desire on the pitch, he is like Bellamy without the problems he had!
And still some people are unhappy which makes me sad.We are supporters for a reason in good and bad we should mourn when we fail and cheer up when we win but we should allways stick with the team no matter what, I don't believe that there are people thinking we don't play the most beutiful and dinamic football in the league atleast in the second half of the last season.
There is no reason to go on witchhunt over Brendan and FSG because he said it himself few times. There will be good and bad and it will take time to build the foundation of a future success.
We are red trough and trough and we should be proud with our club whatever happens.I for one will be behind the club whatever happens.I was behind the team even trough Hodgson and I think noone wants to go back there again.
Please people be positive and lovely supporters because that can only empower our future stars even more!

Cheers!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Well said mate, we do need a few more maybe but I'm sure we will improve again this year with the guys brought in.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry what you say about our squad is wishful thinking. Alberto, aspas are totally unproven in the BPL and to a certain extent were not great successes in Spain. They may come good but there is no way you can say they definitely will. I for one believe That BR is doing his best on a limited budget compared to the top 5 and we need to adjust our ambitions accordingly. We finished 7th last year and I think having Sturridge and Countinho for the whole season will get us 6th. can we overtake spurs/arsenal - at the moment no (maybe if spurs lose Bale). The fact that I remain to be convinced about the signings does not mean I will not be supporting LFC any less when the 11 are on the pitch.

Eds, would Marco Verratti be a viable option for us? It seems that his position is one that we need cover for. Plus, with the World Cup next year, he will want to secure more playing time and could achieve this at Liverpool. However, I could see his price tag as a problem? {Ed030's Note - No mate,He plays regularly for Psg and there is lot's of interest elswhere. }

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He chose PSG over Juventus. Juve really, REALLY wanted him, too.

They'd be stupid to sell him, and Juve would be snooping.

Hi Eds,

Can I ask a stupid question.
Do the 3rd party restrictions that exist in the UK extend to loans?
For example, could some wealthy excentric decide to buy a player personally and then loan the player to a club?
And could they do the loan with no loan fee and 50% of wages?

Just curious.

I could say this eloquently but basically, stop f*****g slagging off our manager. He is our manageer, and a promising one at that, plus inconsistency - constantly changing managers will not get us to the top any quicker. We are Liverpool. Not going to moan about the moaners but come on guys, we are not five year olds throwing tantrums over cookies. Let us just support our beloved club in the true Liverpool spirit. Look at BR look at his lack of a plan B, his terrible transfer dealings, let's be honest borini, yesil, shahin, Allen all pony, cout and Daniel worked well and I pray they continue to but that's a pretty grim batting average so far, no? Br took over an 8th placed team, a midtable team for a few years and managed more points in his first season than rafa, king kenny (both times) houllier hodgson plus more

Wake up and smell the coffee we are moving forward but we don't have billions to do it overnight either be patient or u know where the door is

Agree0 Disagree0

Mourinho had money as did AVB and I guessing you mean Mancini not Maldini who also had lots of cash. As far as Moyes is concerned he built a team over a long period of time stop talking out of your backside and show some support for our manager. Borini may not have set the league alight but look at Sturridge and Coutinho both of whom showed to be great signings. Instead of slagging people on here why not go back to football manager if you want unrealistic amounts of money or go and support another team because LFC deserves better than persons like you

Agree0 Disagree0

AVB did worse than Redknapp with pretty much the same players, Moyes- uhm he didn't over achieve with Everton, he was exactly where they should've been, they were around 8th for overall premier league spending and like 6th or 7th with wages so their positioning has been correct, and Mourinho spent how much in his first stint at Chelsea? Each club is unique and we are in a different position than most.

People reporting Suarez is now staying please get real.

He will get a move to Real just as soon as Real & Arsenal agree a fee for Higuian. Liverpool have conveniently removed one top earner from their wage bill opening up a potential return for Xabi. If he's valued at 9m and Arsenal pony up 25m then the Suarez deal can get done for between 35-40m.

Liverpool will use the 25-30m cash to buy long-term targets Christian Eriksen & Tiago Ilori. Coates will then be allowed to leave permanently or on loan and the final deal of the summer will be dependent on Skrtel leaving. If he does and we get more than 10m I believe we'll try for Papadopolous again or switch our attentions to Toby Alderweireld or Bruno Martins-Indi.

Spearing and Assaidi to leave and that's it.

Henderson will better again this year.
Allen will be better again this year.
Stirling will be better again this year.

The rest we have are good squad players.

We have no European footy to stifle mid weak preparations, unlike Spurs, and Arsenal - I think we can seriously push on and challenge for 4th. Not easy but we can do it!

Hi Eds

With us supposedly looking at 3-4 more signings, are these at all effected by Suarez?. By that I mean do we have to sell Suarez to fund these targets or if he goes will we add another player to our targets as his replacement. The reason I ask is I'm sure there must be money in the pot due to the fact we had a bid for HM accepted & that was before the Shelvey deal & Reina Loan. I know you Eds don't like talking about budgets & transfer fees as you've said on many occasion its all very complicated & I respect that but would you think FSG have put forward an "effective" budget for us to work with this summer, by which I don't mean £100+million like City or Chelsea, but a realistic amount to go get 2-3 top players. I do think FSG have done a great job of balancing the books but I would hope we don't have to sell players to fund new players as I don't think we'd ever move forward. I really dislike these trips away to far away countries while we are trying to prepare for the new season, i'd much rather be getting the new guys from abroad getting used to going to the likes of Stoke & Norwich by playing friendlies against Championship sides who park the bus & learn how to break them down but realise with European revenue this season these trips are needed. I just hope this trip still leaves us time to sign & bed in new faces. One final thing Eds, is there a deadline with Suarez, I mean surely we won't let him go in the last week of the transfer window without time to find replacement or us getting prices for replacement bumped up. Sorry for the essay just wondered were we are on a few things rather than ask "are we signing X player or why player. Cheers in advance {Ed019's Note - I wouldn't expect targets are reliant on Suarez}

eds I made a point earlier about fsg having no money as br said that being honest it was brought to reer a few months ago that basicly wages had to be cut why always cuts when were trying to improve its never going to be easy to improve while cutting? not that I agree about wages 110000 a week cause I wanted him sold he ain't as good anymore and one area wev improved for next season is goalkeeper. so its a positive but I don't like the vibe brendans giving. slightly worried. its not sending right message to new signings it came to our attention we had to get him out. eds do u think that was clubs decision or brendans if it was managers then it would be less worrying?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Of course FSG has money, but unfortunately LFC does not and hasn't for some time. The club needs to start making a profit, or at least not a giant loss on its own. Why do people see this as such a bad thing?

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jul 2013 21:26:26
In all honesty dude, more than anything it was probably Reina's decision.
FSG do have money. Unfortunately most of it is going on the £1 million a week losses we were making last season. They are doing what they can, but we were in a bad position when they took over, and the manager they hired at first let them down on multiple fronts.
They are doing what they can, but the boys on the pitch haven't always been doing what they can.
It started to turn around at the back end of last season, now we've got to see if this continues.
For now, all we can do is hope and trust.

I've just had a thought. Most of us fans like to think were a patient & supportive bunch and like to give our new players who haven't hit the ground running, the benefit of the doubt to deliver the goods i.e Lucas and Henderson. Two players who without nurturing would have left and now are important pieces in the 'jigsaw' so can't we afford the same to the guys in suits? Yes FSG/Ian Ayre and to a lesser extent Brendan have made mistakes by their own admission but instead of chastising them let's give them some backing instead of i.e vitriolic abuse of Linda Pizzuti on twitter (shameful cowardice). We can't buy top of the range Ferraris but sometimes a mix of BMW's, Honda's, Ford's, Chrysler's, Toyota's and Mercedes Benz are good enough to get us top 4 and then we can dream of the F1 Mclaren's, Ferraris etc. Ian Ayre is not my favourite believe me but he's a well respected business executive in the Far East and Middle East and maybe signing footballers isn't his forte but maybe he's
a quick learner? Guy's I know you want to win the Champions League and Premiership today but let's give the suits one more season at least

Hello Eds,
a question for Ed001 please
What do you make of our transfers so far this window? Do you see these signings good for a team looking to claim a top 4 spot?

I am personally going to be very honest, I expected much better and I was firstly very disappointed with Suarez for wanting out but seeing our dealings I wouldn't hold it against him. No top quality player bought in to improve the 1st team yet and doesn't look likely either.
I by no means saying we should have gone for 2-3 20 million players but one top class 20 million player plus 2-3 prudent quality players would have sufficed. To top it off we are happy keeping players like Downing, Flanagan and Spearing. It looks like we are looking to consolidate a good 6th placed finish. {Ed001's Note - I haven't seen enough of any of our signings to judge them, so I will give them a chance to prove whether or not they are good enough. I can't see them being worse then Carroll, so that has to be an improvement. My only disappointment is letting Suso go out on loan, for me that is a mistake, he should have had more chances last season too.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

"One 20m quality player and 2-3 proven quality players". Well, letting your evaluation of a 20m quality player go for a minute, it's appears to me that we have some 40 days yet to sign your 'top' player as we've already signed the quality squad players. Migs, Kolo, and Aspas have already proven themselves at the top level. Alberto looks like a shrewd buy as well but you only asked for 3 so he's a bonus.

Original Poster, hate to say this but you're a fool. You have not seen the players play so you should be ashamed of the way in which you have judged the players on value without seeing their ability.
Coutinho was £8m, a similar fee to that of Aspas and Alberto, would you tar him with the brush of your opinion? I have seen the new players and both Aspas and Alberto look to be astute buys. Aspas has a fantastic first touch and eye for a pass. Alberto has a great range of passing ability and great potential.

Anfield Andy

Agree0 Disagree0

Mignolet, Toure and Aspas will all be starters. All younger and as good or better than the players they will replace (Reina, Carra, Downing) and all on lower wages. Alberto has more upside than Shelvey. How is the summer a disappointment again?

Suarez was signing fans shirts when he arrived in Aus a number of sources have reported, I've even seen photos of fans at what appeared to be an airport with suarez shirts (fair enough they could be fakes), i'd just like to say if he leaves after signing fans shirts in Australia who've paid money to go see him and get his name on the shirts then he is the worst kind of player, he owes the club and fans one more season, or at least a move away that isn't a rival club in the prem.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

What? So he turns up at the Airport and signs shirts and your saying that if he wants to leave he shouldn't sign them. How bad is that going to look for the man. He's employed by the club, so he's representing the club on a tour of Asia and Australia. If fans who obviously know that he wants out of the club, want the player to autograph a shirt, the only decent thing he can do is sign it.I don't get some people on this site.Suarez wants champions league football and a pay rise to boot.He gave his all for that shirt he wore last season, unlike Torres who according to Carra downed tools.I say good look to him and move him on.Nobody will ever be bigger than the club.

As some see it.
Brendan R is at best an average manager, who buys cheap players that would never make a CL team. He tells lies to the fans, can't be trusted and is enjoying his spell in the limelight.

FSG are a bunch of money grabbing chancers. They want to make as much money out of LFC, sell off our best players, have a manger in place to do their bidding. They want to buy on the cheap, lower wages, cut all costs and squeeze every last penny out of LFC. When the well runs dry FSG will run too.

Pepe Reina is an outstanding goalkeeper, has improved year on year at LFC, should at least be kept to provide competition if not starting.

As I see it.
Brendan R is a young manager with massive potential. He knows what he wants. He knows financially, his hands are tied in many respects, 76,000 in Old Trafford, only 45,000 in Anfield. No CL in 5 years. He has had to sell big money earners, get them off the books to lower the wage bill. He can't compete in the market with CL teams, therefore he has to go after young players with potential, rather than established stars. His Liverpool team play an exciting brand of football, the squad is mainly young and hungry for success combined with successful veterans.

FSG bought this club when we were on our knees. They gave King Kenny 100 million and my hero blew it. But he is still my hero. They want to turn Liverpool FC into a successful, profit making club/company. They support BR but have told him to cut wages, sell players and buy cheap and young. FSG are about making profits, running Liverpool into the ground or keeping the club mid table will not turn a profit. Their aim is for glory, for profit but first they must put the club on a proper footing by eliminating waste. This is business, not government!

Pepe Reina has not been his best this past two seasons. We bought a new keeper, younger and potentially better than Reina. Reina was loaned out to give him a chance to be at the next world cup (loyalty), to take him off the wage bill (financial) and to sell him next year, probably to a Spanish club, as per Reina's own wishes. We get a new keeper, we give our loyal servant a chance to play in world cup, save millions in wages and then profit from his sale to a Spanish club which he is eager to do.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Well said Michael

Agree0 Disagree0

Wishful thinking on your behalf.

KK didn't get given £100m, it's easy to pick out numbers from the air, many forget the sales and wage cuts when it suits, plus it was comolli who was brought in by the owners who spent the money given.

FSG didn't know anything about football so it's sad they had to buy us, they have shown no ambition in any deparment. They bought us on the cheap and our now just hoping we will become good by buying cheaper younger players on lower wages.

Once Suarez goes what will be the difference between us and Sawnsea on the pitch, not much.

It's great that we all have different views but my pint is half empty with FSG.

BR I think can do a great job but not with his hands tied by FSG with having to sell before we buy.

Agree0 Disagree0

Great post mate, 100% on the money. We will be a great team again but it takes time to build something unique. Just hope BR gets it.

Agree0 Disagree0

FSG did not give Kenny £100m. They sold Torres, Babel, Benayoun and a few others (not sure if Mascherano left when they were in charge or not), meaning that they actually gave just the standard amount that LFC managers have been given over the years (except when Rafa was given sweet FA for 2 seasons under the cowboys.

redmersey

Agree0 Disagree0

FSG did give Kenny 100 million to spend. What does it matter whether it was from sales or not, he was given 100 million, actually 118 million to spend and he decided to spend it on Carroll, Suarez, Downing, Henderson, Adam, Coates, Doni, Enrique and Bellamy.

If any one of you had 118 million to spend, could you have done a better job? I am of the opinion the money could definitely have been spend more wisely.

The real AG

Agree0 Disagree0

Hey AG and the point being is what exactly? Half of them players are still there and are still quality additions to the team.

Coates had potential, Adam done a job, Doni was cover and Bells was class.

So they screwed up on Carroll who to me seamed fine and a right battler that you need from time to time. Sorting the likes of John Terry and Vidic out.

Don't get you pal.

Alfie

Agree0 Disagree0

Alfie, it's quite clear he means we could have got a lot better value for 118m. Carroll was crazy overpriced, we overpaid for Downing and Henderson and even Adam too. All in all I think most would agree that 118m or however much could have been spent better.

I agree with your assessment on half of them being quality additions and on what you've said about each player except for Adam, whom I believe to be one of the most embarrassing signings in years. The only job Adam would have done was keep the local chipper in business!

We are currently in the market for 3 players.

-A left back for cover/competition
-A centre back for cover/competition
-An attacking forward for competition

We have little funds to purchase players however with Reina, Coates, Pacheco, Spearing and Assaidi off the books we could still afford 3 decent players.

- Ryan Bertrand
- Jannik Vestergaard
- Keisuke Honda

All three would be available for less than £20m in total.

Red Rum

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Not one of them would get in any of the top 5 teams. {Ed001's Note - Bertrand does get into one fairly often, so you are talking nonsense.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Would be great if Honda hadnt already signed for Milan {Ed001's Note - he hasn't yet.}

Agree0 Disagree0

27 league games in 3 seasons for Bertrand.

If he was good enough for Chelsea's first team he won't be sold. {Ed001's Note - he isn't being sold and 3 seasons is hardly fair on a lad coming through the youth system at a club with plentiful money. Getting that many games in that time, is suggestive of a player with a good future.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Honda will eventually go to AC milan and Bertrand doesn't want to leave Chelsea. They see him as the replacement for Cole so that deal doesn't seem likely.

Agree0 Disagree0

You do realize Bertrand was in the starting 11 for the Chelsea team that won the CL final, right?

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't want to sign Bertrand but it annoys me when you see people cherry picking stats which clearly don't reflect reality.

3 seasons of PL matches pulled there to suit your point but 70% of those appearances were all in the season just gone. He made 19 PL appearances last season so that's exactly half the games and you ignored this as it didn't suit your argument. You're better off not signing your posts with rubbish stats like that.

Not a moaning post, more of an inquisitive question, where is the money in going in we had 30 million to start and sold players and loaned how haven't we bought anyone over 20 million who will make an instant impact? Obviously well known players don't mean they are good but it would boost morale and they are more likely to have a quicker impact than an Alberto or Aspas, I would love us to put in a cheeky 12 million bid to bring Alonso back and pay him the wages from Reina!

BR visibly lacks the charisma of a Kenny or a Houiller or a Benitez. and I believe he isn't anywhere in the same league as these guys though many will bring forward the fact how King Kenny wasted loads of money on new signings. I'm going to try something a bit different, I'm going to look at some of the players supposedly up for transfer and see what would have to be done to make a success story of them. If you don't like it please say so and I won't do anymore on this topic.

1. Pepe Reina, let's be honest guys he's wanted to go for quite a while and unless we get champions league this season he's as good as gone, permanently though next season. He's a great goalie but with the wages he's on if his hearts not in it he's of no use to us.

2. John Flanagan, he's a good young player and I love his passion, but he doesn't have the pace or positioning for rb, the only other position I could see for him is dm, with his tackling, stamina and some work on his positioning he could be a great dm for us, I would try this out in the U21's and if it doesn't work then sell him.

3. Martin Skrtel: The lads a beast but there are questions over his attitude, he also isn't so great fitting into our new system, I would give him another season working on fitting into the system, his passing and also composure and see how he is towards the end of the season.

4. Sebastian Coates: The lad lacks concentration, positioning, strength and more noticeably pace. He is tall but doesn't have strength or pace, maybe if we do some serious work on his positioning he could become a useful player for us, he also needs to beef up in the gym. He also seems to panic when people run at him so work on his confidence. I hope we make a success of him though as with the right development he could become a top player.

Hey Eds

A question for you, if you have the time or inclination to answer please?

Do you know why we are loaning reina out?

Obviously I understand that we don't want a player on 100k per week warming the bench. However are there really no buyers out there for one of the top 10 goalkeepers in the world?

Or is it a case of interest from clubs that Reina was not prepared to move to? Or do we the lfc fans have a view of Riena's quality which is not matched by the world footballing community.

I am struggling to understand Liverpools policy of loaning out our expensive players ( Aqualini, carrol, cole now riena) when it has not really resulted in the kind of returns one may have expected. Not that I am being critical of the owners, I believe they are dong an excellent job, but I don't see similar loan deals resulting and below market value sales for our competitors

Thanks

Andy H {Ed052's Note - We're loaning him out as a)its the only options, seemingly. b) He wants to go. c) we want him to go. d)save wages. We've loaned out players before because we couldn't sell them, no point keeping them when you can get a fee and save wages}

Spot on. No club in the world has 2 top keepers on their books and keeps them happy for more than half a season. As soon as Mignolet was signed it was clear Pepe would be off. So many people on here seem to think what happens in FM will wash in real life! You have a top keeper as 1st choice and a capable back up who accepts their position in the squad. "Financially it is something we needed to look at, " Rodgers said.

"That would be the reason because obviously you wouldn't move on a top goalkeeper.

"It reared its head over the last few months and I had to prepare for it by bringing in a new goalkeeper.

So does this mean that the comment about competition for places was a lie?

It seems as though Rodgers has been forced to remove top earners at the club, or at least top earners he could replace like Carroll and Reina. Carroll wasn't going to be playing every week and there was always a fear that Reina might leave anyway. When you sit back and actually realise that these two players earned a total of approx £200,000 per week it shows you that it's all a bit mad. I'm guessing that Toure, Mignolet, Aspas and Alberto's combined wages won't come close to this figure.
Whether we like it or not we are going to have to come to terms with the fact that we are not in the position to have a team of players on £80,000-£120'000 per week.
I know there are many people who don't think Rodgers is a top manager at the minute and are worried about who he can attract. If Pellegrini, Mourinho, Guardiola etc came to the reds they would be wanting to sign very highly payed and priced players. Maybe it's time to realise that Rodgers is just what we need at the moment, a young seemingly very knowledgable manager who seems to be want to mould young hungry players into a particular ethic and style. In five or ten years time we may look back and realise that his efforts may have been as important as any takeover.
let's stop moaning about what we haven't got and back what we have got, I mean if you've been supporting us long enough you'll know we never do things easy anyway! The roller coaster ride of bein a red makes the good times all the sweeter and pulls us through the bad. Dont be an person. I'm happy with the signings we've made and even if i'm not happy i'd support them nonetheless. Have we signed a winger like chadli yet? But surely you're not that deluded to think that the four we've signed till now would be enough to secure CL for next season!

Afternoon Eds I am sick and tired of the lies and blatant disregard for the ordinary supporters, I said to my mate there is no way that Pepe will stay because of his wages, Rogers said last year over Andy Carroll we couldn't afford him to stay on the bench so ya knew PEPE was goodnight, now I don't mind Pepe going I think it's time, but mate don't pony us with oh yeah, Mignloet has come in for competition Blatant lies! And it makes Rogers look a gonk, I am worried what is going on at our club, seems as though slowly but surely we are getting rid of our galacticos and bringing in players with potential, I don't mind getting rid of the free loaders but how are we going to challenge the top sides, If we are not replacing the outgoing players with better players?we are on a precipice and I don't trust Werner or Henry
You would think that seeing the amount of support we have worldwide FSG would see that they need to invest more in quality players to take us to the next level, instead of wishing and hoping the 8mil players would blossom into our next Gerard or Suarez, very worrying times and it breaks my heart because LFC should be up there with all the top teams, Hicks and Gillette have a lot to answer for, but FSG need to understand what it means to be custodians of Liverpool Football Club bless ya loads Liam YNWA {Ed052's Note - We've replaced Reina with a better, younger and cheaper player. Whats to complain about?}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree but why the lies and deceit? Why don't they come out and speak the Truth?, if Suarez goes we are left with Coutinho, Borini, Aspas and Sturridge Coutinho is not an out an out striker plays more off the forward, or wing, Borini can't hit a barn door, Aspas looks good but will need time to settle and Sturridge who I really like needs to stay off the treatment table so we need an onion bag mate, also I understand we can't spend beyond our means but the level of players that are coming in are good for squad but you have to spend a few quid for the top jollie players or we will be scrapping for European places for a good while to come, I am realistic Ed but I saw Liverpool in their prime mate and the teams in the 80s, where did it all go wrong la bless ya loads thanks again Liam

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree a 100% with Liam

Agree0 Disagree0

I keep hearing we are selling our top players for cheaper potential, truth is even with Reina we could only manage 7th!

Agree0 Disagree0

What deceit and lies? I think you're taking press releases way too literally. Over the years there have been numerous examples where managers say certain things which if taken literally get contradicted. However, if you look at the bigger picture, you can often see the rationale for making a comment.

Reina and the need for competition for places. Competition for places is true however, if BR had come out and said Pepe's for sale, it would have been unsettling and we'd have got less money for him.

The Suarez saga is similar. BR has said he expects him to stay. Meaning either genuinely does or he's protecting his value so we don't sell him on the cheap.

It's very good PR in my opinion. Fans need to realise that interviews and press releases aren't completely directed at them. Wake up and see the bigger picture!

Ed052 would love to hear your thoughts on Downings performance?
I will say again there is no point in keeping SD he just doesn't offer anything in attack. Rather keep Assaidi. {Ed052's Note - Downing is better than Assiaidi as he works harder, and more importantly has a better end product, wether that is a cross or shot. He didn't play well yesterday, but is a good back up, cup player etc. Its almost not worth selling him, for the minimal fee we'd get, and low wages he's on, and he helps the English quota}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree there is not much point selling Downing in terms of transfer value, maybe £6m and the public embarrassment. But his wages are v. high, around 70k a week, and he's likely not to be first choice soon. No way he's justifying that now.
If after the first 2 games of the season, he hasn't played either game, (maybe we've signed someone else by then), then surely he'll be gone, most likely on loan, probably to West Ham ironically.
If Reina as a No.2 had to leave on his 100k a week, then Downing surely will as well being 'back-up' winger, all providing we sign another player. RC

Agree0 Disagree0

If Downing stays its because it suits all concerned. 2 yrs to go on contract he'd expect the club to be opening talks. We aren't. He wants to prove himself and is better all-round option than Others we could buy or some of our youngsters. So it's a marriage of convenience. We need his experience but well let his contract run down because we have young players ready to replace him in 1/2 yrs time. He doesn't want to drop down in class.

Agree0 Disagree0

The Op here Ed.
I disagree again Ed as you can't say 70K a week is small wages and we could have got 7-8 million from him and have gone for someone like Chadli.
A much better player for almost the same fee and will likely be on around 40-50K atmost. {Ed052's Note - I don't believe that Downing is on wages that high. Chadli will be on 60k or so, and, although a good player, we don't know how he is going to fit into Spurs and perform do we?}

Cheers Pal {Ed001's Note - I have been giving this thought over the last few hours, well inbetween getting hassled by my daughter and her friends, who seem incapable of doing even the simplest things for themselves. Oh and seem to think a money spider is a fearsome killing beast that is coiled to attack them at any moment. Which reminds me, for all those considering kids, don't, they come with this attachment they call 'friends', that spend their entire time bickering and moaning about each other, but never being able to bear more than a second apart. Ooops sorry got distracted then.

Right, I would go for Honda, if possible, I still love him as a player. Inigo Martinez looks a good centre half for our system, and let Kelly shift over to help out as cover. so a while back. rodgers tells the fans.
""I always felt it was important for us to have competition right the way through the squad, and that includes the goalkeepers, " he said.

"I spoke to Pepe about this a few months back and told him we wanted to bring in another goalkeeper as real competition.

"I was very open with my goalkeepers and they know the situation.

"Pepe has been terrific here, Brad Jones was excellent when he stood in last year and I felt we needed another one.

"Simon comes in and we've got great competition and when you've got competition it pushes everyone to perform.

And now. oh he knows what I want to do and financially we can't pay a top goalkeeper

so there's no way sureaz is staying either, . so i'm not here to complain i'm just saying that I can't as a fan believe anything the manager says now, and I just see Liverpool as doing everything on the cheap. in a way.
to me. this seems like a pet project that this manager is being allowed to change everything. bring in cheap and young and hope for the best.
i think he should of stayed at swansea and continued there because that club is ideal for those type of goals.

My couple of pennies worth regarding the new season.

Can we challenge for a top 4 position? Yes we can. We will not be short on goals next season having young very quick and quite technical players in the squad. I believe more goals will be scored from midfield this season than last. For me our weakness is defence and if BR deals with this responsibly then I believe it will be very difficult to beat us. We have bought quality goal keeper who pro rata in my opinion is better than Pepe. Our midfield is as good as any in the division and better than most.

The youngsters are proving themselves and I feel a new optimism is obvious. They actually believe they can win which for me will stamp out some of our inconsistent results. This is after all the biggest failing during seasons for us and I personally feel some of this is down to pure complacency.

Do we need Suarez? Hmmm we need a striker who scores goals and LS does this. Although I believe LS should leave I would hope we are prepared to spend on a proven import.

Will we finish Top 4? Probably not. I think we will just miss out. We have no European schedule where as many of our competitors do. We will be fresher and this later in the season may give us an edge. However, if our defence is improved dramatically especially from set plays then yes.

LFC are returning to former glory. Slow but sure. I don't believe BR has been given an ultimatum of top 4 or out and I do believe FSG are fully committed to the club having learned some good lessons over the last two years.

My prediction for the bookies purposes: 5th Place, 3 or 4 points behind 4th.

My heart says 1st but its been know to give false readings on occasion and my wallet had a good word with it a couple of years ago.

Wherever we finish I am sure the games are going to be good fast technical football.

After a decent start to the transfer window, I was starting to feel quite optimistic about the future, not anymore. The fact that we have no money to spend, unless somebody is sold, is a massive concern, especially as it is not the squad/ fringe players who aren't good enough going, like Downing, it's some of our best players, in Pepe, Agger and Suarez. What is particularly worrying is how prepared most fans seem to be to accept mediocrity, too busy trying to prove they are a 'superfan' and never criticising anything anyone at the club does.
My main concern is that other than those in charge at the academy, nobody in any high power role at the club has a clue about running a massive football club, they are all so out of their depth it is unreal. We have Brendan Rodgers, the FSG yes man, who continues to make himself look foolish in the press with his blag sayings. Plus him continuously lying, telling everyone Mignolet was brought in as competition, and then a few weeks alter telling us we had to get his wage of the books. Expect and equally embarassing come down in the next few weeks regarding Suarez. Everytime he speaks to the press, I cringe. He'll be gone this time next year.
Next is Ian Ayre, a man who was very good in his previous role at the club, but should have stayed their. He should not be the one in charge of the day to day running of the football club, last Summer, and the Suarez/Evra affair proved that.
I also feel as though we will never win a major trophy under FSG. Being self sufficient has never led to success in this league, sustaining it maybe, but not getting it. I also very much doubt that anything will be done on the stadium front in their time here, we are no closer to work on the stadium than we were when they came in.
Unless something drastic changes, then we can never expect to finish higher than 6th in the League. That is where we are now, we have become a midtable club, you can all sit and accept that, I certainly won't.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Americans are up in arms as well, Red Sox the same cost cutting, wage cutting is happening.

Your spot on some fans will lap up anything to prove they are "real" fans.

I've watched Lpool year in, year out since I was 5 and my uncle took me to the games.

Lpool have no real ambition atm, they lack leadership. As a "real " fan let me just say that Shankly, Paisley, Fagan, Bennet, Robinson would be disgusted at how the club has become.

Whats worse is some of you sit there while our better players are sold or loaned, Reina loaned to a club that are cash rich atm, and you swallow all the crap. Remember us fans the moaners in 4 years when we are still rebuilding every year, just changing the mediocre with even more mediocrity.

If anyone 20 years ago had told me LFC would be like this i'd have laughed in their face.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm sorry but these owners have been fantastic. Obviously, if you have pots full of money like Chelsea, Man city, PSG, Real madrid you can almost effectively buy success. However many clubs can't do this. We have in fact spent a hell of a lot money in the last decade or so but have wasted far to much of it on average players.

Dortmund are the perfect example of not having to spend much money to be successful. 2nd place in the league and a champions league final isn't half bad for starters.

We can't just go out and spend 55million on Cavani nor can we attract those kind of players at the moment. Its all about taking small steps and the progress we have made in a year is bigger than I even imagined.

Take a look at our team from the last year or so to now. Look at the young, rejuvenated team compared to the older less pacey team. I tell you what, we may have to be a little patient but with players like sterling, Ibe, suso, coutinho, sturridge you're telling me we are not good enough to compete in the future?! We are very fortunate to have these players at our club.

Top 4 is a realistic possibility even though it is will be massively difficult. I believe we many come 5th which is not midtable. You cannot expect to come 7th to winning the league the next it is just not a realistic aim.

Danny

Agree0 Disagree0

I am tired of "fans" like you. We do not accept mediocrity but accept the state our club is in and have patience. Rome wasn't built in a day. Selling our best players like Reina, Suarez and agger? Reina and Suarez WANT TO LEAVE and as for agger you are merely speculating. Rodgers hasn't lied, he can't come outright and say they are leaving as this decreases their value!

Agree0 Disagree0

Smithy,
FSG / the club want to reduce the wage bill. There are a number of players on CL level wages still who may be moved on in the next year or two.
It's looking like the policy is to get younger players on a reduced wage to replace them rather than like-for-like replacements.
If we do get the stadium sorted, this could be a reasonable approach. Don't forget it's going to cost £275m plus to do that.
If Anfield gets re-developed, I'm prepared to live with the new approach.
But, if it doesn't, you may be right.
The Juicer

Agree0 Disagree0

What to you suggest Smithy? If you can not accept it.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said Smithy, I completely agree mate. It's painful watching it unfold. I'm not sure whether these owners just want to get the books in order and permission in place for the ground extension then sell or whether or not they will indeed carry out the ground extension sit on the revenue for a couple of years, hope the investment in youth pays off and gets us into the champions league and then sell. Either way, they are not here for the right reasons and that's been glaringly obvious from the outset.

They bought the club at a peppercorn in a distressed market when exchange rates worked in their favour, have spent £42 mill net to date, whilst saddling £111 mill debt on the club and have slashed the wage bill. Someone's making money somewhere. Off the back of a record sponsorship deal and enhanced tv revenue, while other clubs are spending like drunken sailors, Teds told he has to sell to buy! Small wonder Carras retired, he'd had enough of it.

Ozone

Agree0 Disagree0

You make some fair points, but if self-sufficiency isn't the route to success, what do you think would be a better choice? Insolvency?

By any reasonable estimation I would consider United as surely what one could describe as self-sufficient (by a good distance the largest revenues in the league and a very reasonable wage bill as compared to turnover) and they seem to have done quite well. Unfortunately our revenue is nowhere near their levels or even in the top 4 for that matter. This is just reality and we need to accept it for what it is. FSG have been supportive but they do not have near endless piles of cash to throw at new signings. So, as BR said, we look to find players who are hungry to become stars- this is the only sustainable route forward unless someone with piles of money steps forward and offers to buy the club from FSG and thus far I haven't seen a whole lot takers.

Agree0 Disagree0

Have to agree with Smithy. Ayre needs help with transfers and we need to attract better players and keep the best players for stability over the next 3 years.

Agree0 Disagree0

What a ridiculous post and the second post is the same. You have no business sense pal, and I've been supporting LFC for 40 years so please don't play the 'I've supported for years, therefore I know it all' card. Have any of you fools ever run a business? I don't mean worked in one, I mean owned one? I do and you make me chuckle with your naive views. Also, have you ever heard of FFP rules? We currently don't comply with them and spending so spending big sums on players doesn't exactly get us closer to compliance. The owners appear very committed to the cause and are trying to work smart by focusing on marketing and global revenue generation I.e.Lebron James (I think that's his name). We're all entitled to opinions but try to understand how business works before passing judgement on stuff you clearly have no clue about

Agree0 Disagree0

Danny, Dortmund have an absolutely brilliant manager and an excellent CEO, we do not have either. Our squad may be younger than it was this time a year ago, and we certainly have improved the depth, but if Agger and Suarez leave the first 11 will be worse.
The Juicer, the policy you describe is correct, but it's flawed, taking massive risks on kids who have only played in Spains second devision for example. We also have a huge turnover of players every summer and are stuck in this "transition" because of it, which I also don't understand.
Ozone, I think FSG bought us thinking they could find a quick fix, get us back in the Champions League, and sell us on for a massive profit, not realising the problems the club had/have. To try and solve this the squad is now being asset stripped, and genuine quality is being replaced by unproven youngsters.
RDL, United started to get success by spending big on players, they are now self sufficient, and this helps sustain success as I said earlier. I certainly can never see us competing with United, City and Chelsea under FSG unless the academy strikes gold, and produces a golden generation of players.

Defend the statement that someone is making money somewhere, Ozone. Complete BS. The club hasn't had positive returns in many, many years and much of the debt they've saddled the club with is in the form of a no interest loan from themselves to the club.

Again if the owners perhaps got more support from some sections of the fan base rather than being moaned at because they're not scouse, they're not bottomless pits of cash, they're too American, they know nothing of football, receiving death threats and other not so nice messages on twitter and the like perhaps they might actually come to not just view the club as an investment (which I will agree is precisely how they likely look at it at the moment) but feel like a part of the family and actually go beyond supportive to being entrenched in what LFC means. From my perspective there are a certain subset of fans who never gave them a chance and never made them feel welcome- a big chance missed out on I say.

But we spent a fortune and chopped and changed managers and overpaid for players for years and that got us 6th, 7th and 8th. You think we should keep smashing our heads against a brick wall whilst also endangering the futu of the club? That's the ultimate in "mediocre" thinking. I am happy to wait and do it right rather than think we can cut corners and spend our way to success when clearly there are 4 clubs enjoying a massive advantage over us and a 5th that did what were doing 4/5 yrs ago and are now challenging for top 4 regularly. A strategy must to be stuck to otherwise we are just reacting to random events.

More clean sheets (as a percentage), made less mistakes and his distribution was better. Moreover, Mignolet is a far superior keeper to Reina.}

Agree0 Disagree0

No way is Jones better than Reina Ed52, You have made your self look a bit silly.I actually agree with what you're saying that it makes sense to let him go and let someone else pay his wage, than have him sit on the bench, and the last couple of seasons he's shown inconsistency, but to come out and say that Jones is a better keeper, Ridiculous comment.If Jones was in our goal for the whole of last season we wouldn't have finished in the top half of the table. {Ed052's Note - Last season, Jones had more clean sheets (as a percentage) I believe. He made less mistakes and his distribution was better. Jones of 2013 is no where near as good as Reina of 2006. But Jones is more reliable than a 2013 Reina}

Was given this suggestion by a fellow red yesterday regarding the Suarez situation.

It's fair to say that most press have a bias against LFC and it's also fair to say that Suarez isn't the most liked of players they report on.

Behind the scenes the new PR person, the manager and Suarez sit down to discuss a plan to turn it all around.

First of all Suarez says he wants to move abroad due to the press. All reporters now have to report on the fact that he wants to leave because of them. After a few articles they start dropping in comments like "world class", "massive talent", "loss to the premier league". Maybe they start feeling a touch guilty (maybe not much though).

Then horror of horrors, he suggests he could stay in England and move to one of their favourite London clubs. Now what are they going to do? Better start ramping up the positive side of the press for him in case it does happen. Then right at the end he decides to stay at LFC after all.

Now what are they going to do? They've been using a lot of positive comments about him in quite a few articles. They can't suddenly change back to how they were treating him before. There's much more awareness of the hate campaign against him in the first place to the point he was considering leaving. Plus they've written a few nice pieces about him, so to backtrack just because he didn't move after all will expose their anti LFC bias as well.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Or the other theory is that Suarez is a disloyal mercenary

Agree0 Disagree0

Spot on
Dont know what the media guys problems are
It is as if they all work for Man U or on their payroll.
Jealousy will get them no where

Agree0 Disagree0

I think your a little bit delusional. We have seen many negative things reported about Suarez since he has been at Liverpool and even before he joined. But all have been because of the negative things he has done.
To say it's somewhat stopping because of intrest from arsenal is false, I have seen just as much negativity from the press, mostly reporting what a person he is for dragging our reputation down and his antics in trying to force a move.
He will get the same treatment in the press at arsenal unless he drastically improves his attitude. He won't though because he's unstable and a bit of a lunatic.
Don't confuse anti Suarez reporting with anti Liverpool reporting.

MIKEY

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think the press harass him all that much. They do criticize him but only when he does something stupid, so the criticism is not unjust.

The very same media also praise him whenever he plays well.

I do think he got a bit of a raw deal from ref in the first half of the season. The media thing is just an excuse in my opinion and I'd prefer if he were honest and just said he was leaving because we're not in Europe

Personally, I think Suarez will stay.

He doesn't strike me as the type who would join another PL team after what he has said. If he did go, I suspect Real Madrid would be his destination.

I think a lot of what he has said has been blown out of proportion. He admitted it would be his dream to play for Real Madrid; but I'm sure he is not the only player at Liverpool who, although I may not admit it, dreams of playing elsewhere.

Understandably, he doesn't want his daughter growing up hearing the media treat him the way they do, so you have to feel for him. (Yes, he brought it on himself I know but some of the abuse is over the top.)

If he stays (which I hope and think he will), we should support him as much as ever. Too many people already slagging him off. He is a world class player who improves our team significantly.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ah the naivety is astounding ;)

apparently Suarez told fans getting autographs in Aus that he will stay.

For what's its worth I don't really believe him if he did say that, but I hope he does stay for one more season.

Although he comes with so much baggage and off-field issues, we are not going to buy someone with his ability whilst out of the CL.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Why should FSG run the club at a loss - they are after all a business! Whilst it might be nice be owned by someone who doesn't care what it costs provided their toy inflates the perceived size of their penis, in the long term do you actually want someone who sees the club we all love as a toy. And who might equally get fed up, move on, and leave us stuffed. Also we can only play one goalkeeper at a time - or haven't you spotted this - so if Mignolet plays well Reina won't be missed in the slightest.

Br I had to get rid of pepe because of his wages & bring in another keeper & the eds want to know why reds are turning of the yanks we are getting rid of the high earners & bringing in cheap wage players how can we get top4 with this policy, agger johnson ls will be next if fsg can't finance the club propley put it up for sale {Ed001's Note - that is not what he said at all. Why post such a blatant lie? Do you deliberately twist everything you said to suit your idiotic bigoted beliefs?}

Believable0 Unbelievable1

It's a financial decision.

Replace a keeper (reina) with a keeper in better form (mignolet) for less a week. That's the financial decision.

Why leave a keeper (reina) on the bench on a high wage when that can be used towards bringing in other players that could be more effective.

Top 4? All the players like reina on big wages have failed to get into a UCL spot in last 4 years, so BR wants hungry players. BR needs to shake that culture up.

Jimbob

Agree0 Disagree0

Did you actually watch Mignolet last season? Reina has been poor for a couple of seasons now, on his day he is world class but makes quite a few mistakes. Mignolet is younger, cheaper and was excellent last season. JF92

Agree0 Disagree0

It's been fairly widely reported that LFCs finances need to improve and that lack of CL and some fairly disastrous buys in recent years have left us needing to trim costs. The squad was unbalanced when BR took over and LFC made a policy decision to buy young talented players and grow a team while retaining an experienced core of players to help bring the kids through. So against this backdrop are you really upset that LFC moved Kuyt, Bellamy, Aurelio, Doni, Cole on creating room for Sterling, Suso, Wisdom, Robinson and Ibe to get games? Upset that selling two overhyped British players like Carroll and Shelvey have paid for three players in Mignolet, Aspas and Alberto who surely will have more impact on the team together than the two players who we sold?

Agree0 Disagree0

We lost £1million a week last year. Retinas wages of our books take 1/10th away. I know finances obviously are not that simple but it would make no sense to leave him sitting on the bench!

I also believe that in order for us to make some quids from Reina once he gets his "Dream" move to Barca, his value won't be cut to shreds by rotting on the benches. Thus the inteligent move to send him on loan to Napoli (a coach that has great trust in Reina, CL as well as the rise in value due to his experience and play time).

Hence the 'Financial' issue that BR mentioned recently.

No, it's not because of us lacking in funds but making LFC a realistic financial platform before our soon to be accomplished CL qualification. Once qualified, imagine the space and freedom for LFC to flex their financial muscle and still be prudent, stable and within the FFP structure.

And after Carrol debacle, Suarez is ok with that so long as he goes to 1 of 4 teams he asked for in his Transfer request, he is letting FSG and BR do their Business. Arsenal are better then us, they consistently finish above us and spend at least most of the season in contention for trophys.
They always get top 4 and given our total lack of European football this season it's not unreal to expect a top footballer to consider them over us.
What arsenal need to bear in mind is Suarez may look at them as a stepping stone to United or city.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Arsenal are not better than us at all! Ok we might not be in europe THIS year BUT we do win trophys
FA CUP CARLING CUP ETC ETC.
So for Saurez to join them fill you boots mate cause your not going to win a thing!!

Agree0 Disagree0

But Liverpool have won more than Arsenal in the last 10 years. Arsenal may win a cup but league no, 4 th place probably.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm sorry but the OP is correct Arsenal are better than us and the argument about we've won more than them is irrelevant (unfortunately) the top players would much rather be in the CL every year than win a cup. {Ed001's Note - not always true, ridiculous statement. Total generalisation of thousands of individuals. The best players want to win things, preferably the biggest competitions possible. The Champions League thing is more because a UCL team is one that is likely to win trophies domestically, as well as having a chance to win trophies in Europe.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Really Ed? A ridiculous post? There are only 2 things that interest the best players
1) huge money
2) Champions League
Tell me the last "top quality" player (a little subjective I know but we all know what I mean) who signed for a non CL team because he thought they may do well in the domestic cup?
Stop deluding yourself {Ed001's Note - hmmm is that what I said? No. So Chris, give it a rest. Read it back and try and understand it, then you can start again. You think every player is the same. Stop generalising, the best players are interested in different things. They aren't all only after the money, else Messi would be playing in Russia, with a salary so high he could buy Barca out of his loose change at the end of the week. You don't become considered the best player without winning things anyway, but no one mentioned cups except you trying to make yourself look like you were right, by twisting my words. I guess you have forgotten the league is a domestic trophy?}

Agree0 Disagree0

I said top players would rather be in the CL than win a cup, you said this was a ridiculous statement.
It simply isn't {Ed001's Note - yes it is because you don't know any of them personally. So you are assuming every single one of them is the same as you think. The FA Cup is seen by many foreign players as more prestigious than merely qualifying for the UCL. Some want to play for the CL teams because those are the ones with the most chance to pick up trophies. Some will just play for whoever offers them the most money and not give a monkey's about CL or other trophies.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm not going to carry this on Ed as it'll go nowhere as you've obviously got your argumentative head on tonight.
Lets just clear up my point
Of course I don't know them personally but if you simply look at which players sign for which clubs you have your answer.
I don't want this to be the case but it just is, how else do you explain the fact that Liverpool is one of the two largest clubs in England and yet yourself and the other Eds on here constantly tell us that we are going to get top players because either we don't pay enough or we don't have CL?

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jul 2013 02:06:19
Honestly don't understand why Suarez would want to join Arsenal. Barcelona or Real I can understand but Arsenal are no better than us and although they have champions league football, they will not get close to winning it. If he thinks he gets picked on at Liverpool, if he goes back on his word of not joining another English club, he will get slated even more. Liverpool need to be strong and not sell to a rival club in the premier leauge. The price to the foreign clubs is minimum 40M. Not 25m, not 39m. If there is a player that WE are interested then fair enough but it should be on our terms. Suarez is the type of player who would give 100% even if he is unhappy so I have no concerns if he was to stay.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Arsenal are better than us and their excellent manager has proved that for the last number of seasons. really heartwarming to see Kelly playing again, and I hope we can play Ibe more often, I realize he is young but he is such a good player, I hope gets loads of game time, some players looked way out of touch today, Johnson was woeful apart from one defensive interception, his passing was so weak it was "hospital balls" Enrique huffed and puffed but did ok, let's hope he is at his peak at the start of the season, and my last words go to Assaidi, I really like this player and selling him I think is a mistake, selling him for £3 million is a bigger mistake, he should be given a fair chance and dare I say it played more central in the attack and not on the wing, remember Thierry Henry was a converted winger! he didn't do too bad, did he?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree it would not be ideal to re-name Anfield but Anfield will ALWAYS be Anfield so if we get a nice few quid for it to improve us I think maybe it should be took.

Agree0 Disagree0

I was trying to say Assaidi looked more effective through the middle, and it may not be a bad idea to try and play him there, Henty was an example of a winger moving position to a more central role, no way was I comparing Assaidi to Henry, Henry was the only example I could think of at the time.

With our shirt sponsorship deal with Standard Chartered being extended I guess this means the possible deal with Qatari telecom company ooredoo is now dead?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

They were touted as STADIUM sponsors, not shirt, from when we were looking to build a new ground. Possible that even with an expanded Anfield there could be some sort of stadium sponsorship touted again, but it would be very unwelcome by the fans and would likely be abandoned pretty quickly. Annoys me that we're only looking to increase capacity to 60k though when it could be pushed to 70-75k easily enough.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm pretty sure the ooredoo deal was never for shirt sponsorship it was the training gear and possibly melwood wasn't it?

Agree0 Disagree0

Above 60k and there's some sort of legal obligation to sort out transport links etc for the ground which massively ups the cost.

Still confused about the Suarez situation. Seems to me that there's no decency left. If a player wants to move he should formally request a transfer or keep his mouth shut. I also still don't understand the 40 million 'open talks with a player' clause. Does it mean we would have to sell and at what price? Sorry to ask the same old questions but it seems like we are all struggling a bit with this one.
Nan's Scarf

Believable0 Unbelievable0

A 40m+ bid would mean he can talk to other clubs, not agree a contract or have a bid accepted or be put up for sale or anything else. However, if a player wants to leave we won't want to keep them, which is why we brought in Mignolet knowing that Reina wanted to go. Suarez will meet with BR & Ayre - if he tells them he wants to leave then we will let him if the ofers are right for us. Same goes for Agger, though it's much more likely he could be convinced to stay for at least another season if Barca came in for him as he loves the club.

what do you think eds/supporters?

swissred

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'm not the biggest fan of johnson as regulars know but I wouldn't be replacing him anytime soon. Too many changes in defence already and too many problems that need sorting before the right back position.
I think by the time we get round to looking to replace Johnson we might already have a ready made replacement in one of the many youngsters we have coming through, so spending much needed money now is pointless when we can hold on a few seasons and replace him for free.
To be fair though I can see Johnson improving this season. Mainly due to toure giving him a much needed talking to every time he cocks up.

He seems to be trying so hard to impress, I always thought good strikers have a natural instinct to hit the target and score goals, borini has that but is trying to hard and not using his instincts.
He deserves our support for as long as he is trying so hard to impress us, it shows a good attitude. His natural ability to score goals will come. It's
when players don't show willing that we need to drop our support. I can think of one player right now who fits the bill.

With Rodgers comments that something will happen while he is Oz, I assume that the Suarez affair will come to a head next week and, we can assume the players we are targeting will see some major developments.

If it is 1 or 2 players we are looking at then he is assuming Suarez isn't going, as this will be a attacking midfielder and a defender. If Suarez does go then we must be looking at another player up top.

Still think we are a couple of players short after that of having a good squad, a DMC, LB and maybe a winger and I'd be happy but appreciate that we would have to ship Downing/Skrtel etc. before we could be in a position to do that

Your middle paragraph is correct. We're not looking for another DM though as BR's switched to almost exclusively playing 4231, meaning Gerrard, Lucas, Hendo and Allen are the 4 competing for the places in the '2'. BR looking at another creative player for the '3', a LB to give Enrique competition and a replacement for Coates if he thinks it too soon for Wisdom to step up. If Suarez leaves a replacement will be signed. If Agger or Skrtel leave there'll be a replacement too. We're not looking for a striker though as Aspas will back up Sturridge for the '1' position. Keepers now sorted too.

Hi Eds,

Any idea who the 'exciting' new signing Rodgers referred to in his press conference is?

Sorry if it has been mentioned already but I have checked the previous posts.

Many thanks {Ed001's Note - sorry no idea, not had a chance to check out the press conference to even know if he said anything of the kind.}

I prefer this quote from Rodgers rather than leaning on a single word of a rather lengthy interview-

"I am not necessarily looking for stars. I am looking for players who are hungry to become stars."

Much more accurate I think as to what the transfer strategy is.
