What's does everyone make of klopps assessment of firmino as a striker who sometimes plays in midfield and not a midfielder who sometimes plays as a striker.

Believable4 Unbelievable2

23 Nov 2015 20:04:28
It wasn't an assessment of the player, Those were his instructions to Firmino for this specific game.

He's played false 9 and no.10 before, and then every so often on the wing, and capable in all 3 positions depending on what you're looking for in terms of strategy (obviously perfect for high press and counters rather than crosses into the box) . I still see him more naturally as a no.10 though.

Having said that, Klopp played Lewandowski as a no.10 for a while to teach him how to be a striker so perhaps he really does see him converting to that mould.

Personally was surprised he wasn't used before as a striker when our forwards were injured, have always seen him as a possibility there, especially after seeing him and Coutinho play exactly this setup for Brazil a while back and their link play was obvious then too.

I am not sure his finishing is good enough to play as a striker at the moment although it can improve of course as it improved with couts.

Klopps as u know is a master of motivation. he is good at telling people with pictures and analogies what he wanted. he wants firmino to see himself as a real striker not some part time striker. i remember ronaldo was once a winger at man united until he receive some kinda mental training that ask him to picture himself scoring goals from all angles.

Hey ed001, just curious what your thoughts were on Steve Nicol as a player. Never got to see him play and he's clearly Liverpool through and through. Seems to be one of the legends less talked about.

Just asking because the espnfc team always ask him things Liverpool related. They asked him about the team of the week and why lukaku was in ahead of Firmino.

They chattered on about statistics and what not. And he responded, quite hilariously, if Lukaku is that good, why is he playing for Everton?

Got a good laugh out of that.

Believable5 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - I loved Nicol as a player, he could play almost everywhere and look like it was his natural position. He may not have got the glory, but he was one of the most vital players at Liverpool. Couldn't half neck a pint down as well! Very underrated player, would walk into almost any team in the world on his day.}

23 Nov 2015 17:08:00
Was a good solid gutsy player. Could play anywhere across the back line and also lend a hand in midfield. He was Mr Reliable.

23 Nov 2015 20:02:52
Not that he never made it, but Veron really struggled at United and Chelsea on the field, and people kept questioning his starts, but united and Chelsea players from the time (talking retrospectively), said they couldn't hold it against sir Alex and (I think) Ranieri becuase in training he was exceptional and really just made himself undropable, but for some reason it didn't show on the field. There was a particular interview with Neville and Scholes I think where they pour adulation over him, but regret it never transferred.

After the last game, I wouldn't change a thing! A lot of people are clamoring for Benteke and/or Sturridge to come in, instead of Firmino, but I simply don't see the need. Firmino's impact on the game, as well as that of Lallana and Coutinho, in harrasing and closing down the opposing back four's efforts to move the ball forward, has been mostly underesimated. Every time a ManC player from the back four tried a second touch on the ball, one of those three was within a few feet and forcing them into a mistake or a long, inaccurate, hurried pass. This gegenpressing in the first 15 minutes, set the tone for the entire game and ManC never fully recovered. People are too obssessed with labels, ie. "striker" when the role a player plays is far more important. Is Firmino a striker? No. Was he influential in all 4 goals that were scored? Obviously, Yes. So why do we care if we have a striker playing or not, if the set up of those three (Firmino, Coutinho, Lallana) allows us to completely counter and upset the opposition's plans, and get a generaly unexpected victory out of it? Do we really care who is doing the goal scoring as long as we score and win? Would Sturridge or Benteke do the same amount of pressing Firmino was so effective in doing? Benteke is simply not agile enough and too slow for it. Sturridge simply doesn't like to do it, based on what I have seen the previous seasons. Of course, every team has to be addressed tactically and differently, every week. But for me, Firmino should be starting every week and Benteke and Sturridge shold be brought in whenever the tactical need requires it. Not to overdo it, but I think this last game was like "the shot that was heard throughout the league" in the same manner that we beat Arsenal at home 2 seasons ago. Within 20-30 minutes the game was pretty much over, and that game set the tone for the rest of the season. I would replace Milner with Henderson, and place the 11 that started against ManC as the base for the rest of the season, while changing individual players according to form, injuries and suspensions. I was one of those who wrote that we would not climb beyond 5th or 6th this season. But the way those three in front played the game showed me how not only how they could score goals, but also how our defensive deficiencies in both midfield and the back four were lessened.

Literally agree with every word. Hendo in for Milner, Sakho in for Lovren. Job done.

Agree15 Disagree1

23 Nov 2015 15:53:09
I agree that they played very well in a counter-attacking capacity, but I don't know if that would have been the team I'd select if I was looking to break down a team. But you need all sorts of options to win a title. The core of the squad in place is extremely solid, you've just got to have a few interchangeable parts, and we definitely do. Fantastic performance from Firmino, Coutinho is on PotY form right now and Can played his best game in a red shirt. There is a lot to be proud of about Saturday's performance, but we can't get ahead of ourselves. Sure feels good though!

Agree7 Disagree1

23 Nov 2015 17:34:27
Ra is right. Why should Benteke or Studge especially, just walk into the team? What has he done to earn that right? We are winning and scoring goals so until the opponents and or tactics dictate otherwise, he and or Benteke should just sit tight and encourage the team.

Agree3 Disagree1

23 Nov 2015 17:38:31
Against most other teams they won't have a problem with kicking it long, sitting back, crouding out the space. As well as it works against teams that press, it won't work as well against teams that play to hit us on the break, we will need a striker to score more. Firmino stays in in my eyes though, just games where we expect to be on top, benteke or Sturridge up front.

Agree3 Disagree0

23 Nov 2015 18:26:56
Agree and disagree. You have to be willing to adapt to what is in front of you - there's no point in a team set to rush and counterattack an opposition who is perfectly happy to sit there for the draw or try and nick a win. I'm happy with whatever and whoever Klopp selects for the job at hand - winning a game will not always be the same tactic.

Agree4 Disagree0

23 Nov 2015 21:22:37
I would say our issues will come at home where playing counter attack will be more difficult.

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Nov 2015 03:40:10
Agree 100% Agger, it's our ability to break down a packed defence with the opposition placing 10 players behind the ball that will define our season. That's why we need other options when Coutinho/Firmino are struggling to create space for a break through the middle.

Benteke will be invaluable in situations where we have to play with more width to stretch the defence (eg a 4-3-3 with Firmino/Benteke/Ibe upfront), and someone to feed off the resulting crosses.

Alternatively we could play 2 upfront with Benteke/Sturridge who would complement each others styles nicely.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Nov 2015 23:30:00
Great post. Very much agree.

I'm also curious about this point, I've seen a few times argued on here, about how people would not have gone with the same XI, if we were playing a team that would fall back and concede possession-- the assumption is that Firmino/Coutinho/Lallana wouldn't be able to break down a defense that has dropped deep. Instead, you go with Benteke or Sturridge.

I actually think this has it backwards. It is precisely the darting runs, creative movement, flick ons, through balls, and technical link-up play we saw between Firmino/Coutinho/Lallana, and to a lesser extent Can, that is necessary to break down defenses, including those that drop deep and concede possession.

The problem we had under Rodgers was that we would pass the ball around the box pointlessly, with nobody making such creative runs or darting through with pace, and eventually we would hoof a bad long ball or cross into the box, which would be cleared easily.

I could see Benteke's strength in the air being a nice option to call on in different circumstances, as a way of keeping teams guessing and mixing things up, but otherwise, this would be my Starting XI, with Hendo in for Milner, Sakho for Lovren.

Agree2 Disagree1

24 Nov 2015 12:27:31
I disagree with adapting. Focus on being so good at your own game that the opposition have to adapt. Do you think Barcelona ever adapt based on opposition? Do they heck. Same players, same tactics, same formation. They're just so good at it its near impossible to stop.

Coutinho, Firmino and Lallana have a near telepathic chemistry. Why change that?

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Nov 2015 13:07:41
ra1969, i can't disa gree with you, also it was the same team that beat chelsea so klopp knows what he needs for certain games, against the top teams he plays the top 3 because they have the agility and speed to close down the defenders when we are pressing high up the field, as you say benteke is not agile enough or he is not quick enough also, again he will use this team when we play the top teams away from home, klopp knows what he is doing and he is getting the best out of our players so long may it continue, its great the way he has got his tactics across so quickly and the players seem to be taking them on board just as quick, i have just watched natch of the day which i recireded and i think countino has put some muscle on in his legs, so the players have not just got better but they have put muscle on making the stonger in the challange nad it will be harder for them to get knocked of the ball,

again i will say it, i feel we will go on a winning run of games now that we have started winning games, and because of this we will have a chance of not just finishing in the top 4 but we could win the prem and another cup, so a double or maybe a treble could be on the cards, but for this to happen we have to first go on a winning streak then we will need luck, because our last game showed we have the pglayers and tactics and manager to win the prem so with a bit/lot of luck we could win the prem /europa or even the treble, it would be worth a £1 or £2 bet on it, just out of interest, our next game will show us how we are going to play for the rest of the season if we win it and perform the same a we did against man city then the other top teams better get out of our way, i'm now looking forward to our games something i lost when BR was our manager also what strikes me is the way klopp is smiling all the time, its infectious because after a game when he goes to our players they end up smiling giving them a fell good factor where as BR's smile was creepy lol ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Nov 2015 13:40:39
EMS - yes, Barcelona do adapt. Every single game. Every top team adapts; I'm not taking about big sweeping changes but they do change game on game. That's why you do things like opposition analysis - why would you bother if you weren't planning on adapting to it?

Agree1 Disagree0

23 Nov 2015 14:56:54
One of the key things we still need to fix is making Anfield a fortress again. While our high press game works well against sides who want to play football (leaving space for us to exploit when we gain possession - we only had around 40% in the period we scored 3 vs City), we still seem to struggle against sides conceding possession to us, playing a low block and relying on a swift counter (eg. Crystal Palace) .

I suspect a large part of the problem previously was both the FBs and the CMs pushing high, often leaving only 2 CBs + Lucas facing a 3 on 3, which thankfully Klopp seems to be rectifying with bit more discipline and balance when going forward, but we still need to figure out how to break down a stubborn defence.

I hope and think Benteke will key to scoring in a packed box, so while I love to see Firmino (and in time Sturridge) upfront with their mobility and press, I also am glad we have an option to go route 1 if we need it. Perhaps even a Sturridge or Firmino/Benteke partnership to play off each other?

What really impressed me most about the City game though was how well drilled the side were. The side seemed to switch from a 4-2-3-1 to 4-1-4-1 to a 4-4-2 depending how deep we were in Defence, while Everyone seemed to know where they needed to be, whether dropping deep to cover or pushing up in a press. Coutinho flicked from dropping back wide to being an outlet for the counter (often ahead of Firmino), Milner was occasionally a powerhouse in midfield, then creating width up front, Lucas was at one point a DM, then shifted to shutting down De Bryune who was outstanding. And in attack Firmino and Coutinho seemed to be telepathically linked with clear idea of what the other was up to. Can't wait to see how those two develop together in the coming months.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

23 Nov 2015 17:38:29
To add to your point, I think Lucas is back to his pre injury best. He was a beast in midfield n made Fernando and the hapless Yaya Toure look poorer than ordinary.

Agree5 Disagree1

23 Nov 2015 19:54:17
Lucas was brilliant I Saturday, to me he is the main man in the team, a leader and organiser of what's around him. Can had a near faultless game, his yellow was harsh too. The front 3 were relentless and it was like having 3 Rushies on the pitch with how they never gave Man City a second on the ball.

Was watching Sly Sports News earlier, and that fella Gayle does my head right in. Was basically saying its easy to play the pressing game and score goals that way. Didn't give us one bit of credit for going away to City and smashing them 4-1!

I know we shouldn't get carried away with Saturdays result, after what happened the week after Shamford Bridge with Palace, but the team looks hungry, everyone knows their role and they are all fighting for each other with 100% commitment for the 90 min.

Agree3 Disagree1

24 Nov 2015 00:07:00
Agree, you can also look pretty stupid with a pressing game that's badly executed, leaves the Defence exposed if you're just running around further up the pitch like a headless chicken. There was clearly a very structured approach last game as to who was where and who pressed whom, then a quick transition into Attack and lots of Creative freedom in the final third (eg Can being the furthest player forward just before his back heel, and Coutinho often playing almost second striker at times)

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Nov 2015 11:42:48
The Sky sports commentators never give us anything and that guy, Gayle was it, is just the worst. Just wish we could get a decent radio commentary (city doesn't reach out in Snowdonia) and turn the annoying babble from sky off. Bit like you used to be able to do with the cricket!

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Nov 2015 13:22:39
i also agree these pundits never give us any credit, we hammered city and all they said was that city had an off day, not that liverpool made them look like that through our hard work and pressing it does seem a lot of pundits don't give us any credit, the only one i can think of who is fair is alan shearer, he says it as he sees it, one of the worse for me is alan (i can't think of his 2nd name at the moment ) he used to play for arsenal as a striker he never ever gives us any credit, its all ways the fualt of the other team that we play because he will say the other team had an off day, and when we score a goal great goal or a great team goal he won't give us or the player credit, look at skertals goal, he smashed it passed englads number one and no one has gone on about that goal it was a great finish by skertal which no goal keeper would have saved because of the speed of it, but hey we will be able to gloat when we win the prem in the next season or 3, I've just remembered the pundits 2nd name, its alan smith who never gives us any credit what so ever, also i know he would have said that man city had an off game because of the international break not that we would not let them play because of the hard work we put in or the pressing all over the field, oh well its good his opinion does not matter to me or the team and players,

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Nov 2015 13:51:34
Henderson fully fit, does he come in for can or Milner? He's always been athletic so could do well there, can cross the ball well too. If he goes in the middle, could mean drolling firmino to cam, lallana to the right and bringing in benteke or Sturridge, we will need an out and out striker in games where the opposition sit back and don't get countered as easily as Saturday.

Believable0 Unbelievable2

23 Nov 2015 14:02:14
He is coming after a long-ish injury lay-off and I think we need to ease him back into action. Once fit, he probably will take Emre Can's place in the squad.

23 Nov 2015 15:03:38
Henderson for Can and let him challenge for a starting spot. He's played really well the last few games but Hendo has a better passing range, creates more assists, has greater mobility in defence and doesn't give the ball away as often.

I don't see why we'd need Hendo in the attacking mids with Coutinho, Firmino, Llalana, Milner and Ibe available there.

Agree3 Disagree5

23 Nov 2015 15:28:20
The natural answer is Can, but on current form it's Milner.

Agree2 Disagree2

23 Nov 2015 16:29:39
Can is a very good player and gives our midfield a lot of power something we have lacked in the past, more than deserves a place in the team. He is growing all the time into a position he is learning again, he was excellent against City.

Agree5 Disagree1

23 Nov 2015 17:41:26
Milner for me. He was average vs City along with Clyne.

Agree3 Disagree8

23 Nov 2015 18:01:58
Milner was very good against City probably his best game in a red shirt, obviously keeping Henderson out of the side when fit is a different matter but we don't need to rush players back and risk them as we have a fairly decent size squad, it will be great to see Rossitier back this week as well.

Agree5 Disagree2

23 Nov 2015 18:40:20
If we take off Milner, where would you fit in Henderson? Milner plays right midfield and I don't want Henderson being there. Klopp likes the 4-2-3-1 system and only changes it depending on how we are doing later in the game.

Agree2 Disagree1

23 Nov 2015 18:41:21
Obviously just a guess but I think Klopp will rotate Henderson, Can and Milner for the two midfield spots either side of Lucas. At the moment Allen is the backup for Lucas but Klopp doesn't appear to be convinced by his ability. I suspect that's one of the positions he is looking to bring in a player.

We shall soon see as I think Lucas is now suspended isn't he?

Agree2 Disagree2

23 Nov 2015 21:01:28
For Swansea he is.

Agree1 Disagree1

23 Nov 2015 20:52:06
Milner was probably our weakest MF against City.

I'd say he comes out for Hendo.

Can has to work on consistency, but his link up play with Firmino/Coutinho was great-- far better than anything we've seen from Milner.

I also think Hendo will link up great with Firmino/Coutino.

Agree1 Disagree1

23 Nov 2015 20:54:07
PS I should also say, Milner may have may the most perfectly timed through ball in the entire game against City, though Aguero couldn't pull the trigger on Milner's beautiful lay in for him.

Agree5 Disagree1

24 Nov 2015 07:46:41
Mighty Red - shouldn't the fact that even in a game where you consider Milner as having been 'very good' he still managed to slip in that pass? What good did he actually do to justify ignoring a slip like that?

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Nov 2015 23:42:37
Milner was poor and I was not the only one to see it. His dumb back pass almost cost us a goal. I would understand if a rookie did it. However, many of his apologists hail his experience, professionalism and work ethic, should be shocked by his blatant tactical and schoolboy error.

I wasn't. He can't pass, can't tackle and too slow. To crown it all, makes double than several players in the squad who are better than him. Go figure.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Nov 2015 13:08:03
Reading some of the posts below I was happy to see that I am not the only one who think Ming and Skertl are not a majour problem for us even if they are not world class. Saying this and without taking anything from our great performance going forward we did live dangerously in the back. Way too many back passes or not releasing the ball quick enough. Some of our players will try to overcome pressure from three opposition players by trying to keep the ball at any cost insteaf of sending it forward. Some work is required there.

Believable1 Unbelievable4

23 Nov 2015 14:04:39
The problem is both Mignolet and Skrtel play in positions where small mistakes will lead to goals, and both have made plenty of mistakes in the PAST, and probably has a mistake a game on them. Both have IMPROVED well under Klopp but long term, we need to look at better players IMO, but Klopp will almost certainly wait until the summer to see how they (and everybody else) gets on before taking a decision on them.

Agree2 Disagree4

Didn't Man City goal come directly from Skrtel and Mignolet fluffing their lines.

Agree1 Disagree3

23 Nov 2015 15:00:48
No. Skrtel gave away the ball, but Mignole passed to Clyne, which Clyne then passed to Skrtel, who then gave away the ball.

Agree1 Disagree2

23 Nov 2015 15:17:32
I'm sorry but Mignolet played an accurate pass on the wing to Clyne who had time and space to control the ball. Hardly a mistake, Clyne passed the ball back to Skrtel who played it 1st time. It was a good headed interception which broke up the move. Why the constant need for blame. It was 1 of the only times they did to us what we did to them all game.
Did we really think that City at the Etihad would not create chances.

Agree7 Disagree1

23 Nov 2015 17:13:55
I think we over sell that goal as a mistake. 95 times out of a hundred there was no danger. Unfortunately it was Aguero who received the ball and he punished with a stunning strike.

Agree4 Disagree1

23 Nov 2015 17:26:42
Skrtel had a strong game. Migs had a strong game. Just relax and enjoy it without the constant need for seeking out negatives.

I'm sure the fans that look for the bad points and the same fans than grunt and moan when we lose the ball or make a mistake at Anfield. This is part of the reason the players are so tense there and why it isn't the fortress it once was.

Obviously the majority of reds are with me, enjoyed the game and we're happy to see a great team performance capped by a sweet goal by Skrtel.

Not too fussed with the goal. That was a messing about that is bound to happen on the road vs a title fav. Klopp already addressed it post game as a situation where our guys needed to show for the ball and didn't. Nothing to see here, IMO.

How mindless are some people. I usually don't get frustrated this easy, but it is a FACT: Mignolet passed to Clyne, Clyne passed to Skrtel, who gave away the ball. Disagree all you want in the shadow of anonymity, but it won't change the facts.

Don't think klopp is the kind of guy who gets his head turned by money. He probably earns enough at Liverpool anyway. This guy seems to get stimulus from insane challenges others would deem futile to even attempt. How easy was it to let Liverpool be? With all the financial constraints the eds have constantly highlighted and the wealth of options at his disposal. It's an impossible job of sorts with extremely volatile and super sensitive nature of the fan base. A very rare breed in modern Era I must say, we fans are lucky to have him and he is lucky to have a project like Liverpool available, because its challenging projects like these which would help shine his personality. There is a game midweek and I think the weekend's team selection will be based on how we get along midweek against Bordeaux.

Agree1 Disagree0

23 Nov 2015 15:05:20
Lucas is suspended, Henderson is still coming back from injury (might come on later in the game) . Allen played well in the win against Rubin and unless he is injured against Bordeaux will probably play in the middle where Lucas has played under Klopp.

The only other potential change is Benteke in for one of the front three. I have a sneaking suspicion that we might see Enrique for the first time in a long time vs. Bordeaux.

Moreno has played a lot, Enrique trained over the break for the first time under Klopp and played the midweek u21 game vs. Benfica.

Believable0 Unbelievable3

23 Nov 2015 12:03:27
He wasn't an out and out DMF, he played alongside Barry in CM with Barry being the one who'd drop deeper most of the time. Milner was more like a quarterback type midfielder when he was at Villa, similar to what Rodgers wanted Gerrard to be.

Looks a really techinak cm. I'm sure arsenal were interest a while back.

{Ed001's Note - he has two brothers, I don't believe either are twins. He is unlikely to go anywhere without UAE connections, due to the fact that his entire family get UAE citizenship on the back of his ability. He is actually from Yemen. Plus he is very much a show pony, great skills but very little end product.}

23 Nov 2015 11:26:24
he is not that amazing at all. I have watched him live numerous times. Not only that, he is very lazy and also the level of football he is playing at is similar to league 1 or even lower than that. want to see something really amazing youtube the best skills and goals of a player called Shikabala or Youssef Msakni.

Agree0 Disagree5

{Ed001's Note - then you would be wasting our time asking about randomers that are well known to not be going anywhere near us.}

23 Nov 2015 13:53:31
He had a trial at Man City and there were strong rumors he might sign for them a while back but nothing came off it. He is doing very well in the UAE league and is a top assist-er for his team but I am not so sure he is suitable for the PLs pace, intensity and physical nature.

I wouldn't call the UAE Pro League League 1 standard as it is never that easy to compare the leagues. UAE do have one of the most professional leagues in Asia and I think most of Asia remains an untapped market.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - there were rumours but no substance to him as there was not a chance of him signing for him once they took a look at him mate. They are pretty much the only team that he would be allowed to sign for and keep the visas. Oh and he is pretty much the only star in the UAE league, which is terrible, crowds are League 2 levels. It is a strange league, with the sheikhs owning the teams paying for pretty much everything. Not sure it is all that professional as you suggest though, it is playground stuff and they refuse to allow non-Emiratis in their academies, so the youth teams are embarrassingly bad.}

23 Nov 2015 15:06:09
His visa status I have no idea about Ed002, but professional in the sense that when you look at some of the other Asian leagues, this one is a country mile ahead of others and only behind the K-League, A League, Chinese, Japanese, Iranian, and perhaps the Qatari league. I don't know a lot about the specifics about the league itself mate such as the youth academies etc but I think it's a really difficult place to judge players.

Lanzini at West Ham was playing in UAE last seoson and did okay, but is now doing very well in the PL as an example. Better scouting could unearth gems like Lanzini I think.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Lanzini was very well known and was not scouted from the UAE league - Lazio and Roma had made their interest known two years ago.}

23 Nov 2015 09:44:03
There are some very apparent changes and improvements already noticeable under Klopp, but I get just as much pleasure from seeing the little things as well. On Saturday there was a City attack, just a ball over the top I think, and it was a foot-race between the City attacker and our defender (can't remember who exactly) . Suddenly, and completely unexpected based on previous evidence, Mignolet appeared in the picture about 10 metres out of the penalty area and cleared the danger. I don't think I have ever seen Mignolet do that before.

Believable10 Unbelievable0

23 Nov 2015 09:51:45
I have.

Then we changed it because he was a nervous neris.

I personally and I'm allowed. Still don't like him and want to see another keeper, wether that is ward or someone brought in I don't mind.

I just think he is always a game away from rrturing to his otherself.

Agree2 Disagree5

23 Nov 2015 10:13:48
Migonlet bugs me as he can have a decent run of games and then boom he slips and he finds it hard to get back. But since klopp has come in i have seen a different Migonlet some of the saves he has made have been world class (Chelsea Game with the lob) and the city game with sterling and Aguero link up, but i do still feel nervous with him in net.

Agree1 Disagree1

23 Nov 2015 10:32:37
what Mignolet lacks in distribution skills and ability with his feet he more than makes up for as a shot stopper (even though he is better with the direct balls than the corners) . As you mentioned even he has improved under Klop, but there is still a whole lot to be done.

Agree1 Disagree1

23 Nov 2015 10:50:43
No, his shot stopping does NOT "more than make up" for his deficiencies unless you are a championship level team.

Agree8 Disagree3

23 Nov 2015 10:46:33
My god xper. He is a goal keeper. You can't use he is a good shot stopper as a good attribute for a goal keeper, they all are. Ktd the rest of the skills that make them top class. How they are on crosses, how they distribute, commanding the defense, reading of the game, positioning, sweeping.

It could grate on me more about his shot stopping skills. Nothing personal pal but come on.

And if he didn't more than make uo for the rest he wouldn't concede 50 in a season would he.

Agree2 Disagree2

23 Nov 2015 13:01:59
Shot stopping is a basic requirement for a GK so don't know what u're on about there. I agree he has improved under Klopp but don't think he is what we need going forward.

Agree1 Disagree2

23 Nov 2015 12:28:52
His shot stopping is so overrated. When we were leading 4-1, Man City took a shot from the edge of the box that had no real power but decent hight, he just watched and delayed his save to make it look like it was a magnificent save while in the process pushing it like a little girl out wide to a city player who crossed it, luckily Skrtel managed to get his foot in a give away a corner before the tap in.

I see people saying no keeper in the world would have saved Agueros goal which in my humble opinion is hilarious. He stood jumping in the exact same spot without taking a single real step sideways, watch the goal from behind the goal and you will see if he only took 1 or 2 steps to his left instead of just jumping up and down he would have EASILY saved it. EASILY. I can think of many many GKs who would have saved that shot. He is without doubt the weakest link without a shadow of a doubt, and will cost us more points like he cost us vs Palace.

Agree1 Disagree5

23 Nov 2015 09:41:19
I was really pleased for Skrtel when he smashed that goal in on Saturday. Ok, it's not really what he's in the team for but all defenders like to bag the occasional goal, and it's important that they do so, especially a cracker like that. Skrtel has been hammered by a lot of supporters over a long period of time and has some high-profile detractors in this forum, but I think some of it is unfair. OK, he's not the best in the business or the best we've ever had and he was culpable in the passage of poor play that led to City's goal on Saturday but I'd say he has been our most reliable centre back for a number of years now. What he may lack in communication and reading of the game, he makes up for with spirit, battling and good old-fashioned no-nonsense defending. I would certainly rate him above any other centre back we've had at the club since Carragher and Hyppia, although I do rate Sakho highly and expect him to become our defensive rock if he can avoid frequent injury lay-offs. Skrtel is now on his fifth Liverpool manager. He's had at least the same number of centre-half partners, often changing from one match to the next and countless different full-back combinations either side of him. He's not always had the best of midfield cover in front of him either and, whilst I don't think Mignolet is the disaster that a lot of people make him out to be, he's not one of those keepers that really bosses the back four and breeds real confidence in the defenders.

Believable7 Unbelievable0

23 Nov 2015 10:00:48
I am not sure who started it, but this page has always criticized Skrtel. They bring up small small minute defects in him and blame the entire problem on his shoulder.
He is not a world class defender and he has never claimed to be one. But he does the job and survived 5 managers in the past 7 years at the club.

He is better than Cahil

Better than Per Mertesacker

Better than Demichelis

Better than Phil Johnes

All the above players are from top 4 clubs.

Blaming him for the goal conceded, what was Lucas doing to stop Aguero?

Ironically Klopp Favors Skrtel.

Brilliant post mate.

Agree5 Disagree9

23 Nov 2015 10:48:20
Sorry mate but you said it yourself - he lacks in communication and reading of the game. Spirit doesn't make up for that - his lack of comms, and his lack of positional sense, costs us both goals and games and the bottom line is that there is no way to cover that with spirit. A great last ditch tackle can't compensate for not doing the simple stuff consistently.

But yep, always gets bashed on here but always gets picked by the managers whilst the other defensive player has changed. Funny that?

Agree2 Disagree2

23 Nov 2015 13:05:50
You can say 'he's survived, he's outlasted etc'.

Another phrasing would be 'he's the common denominator to a lot of long standing defensive issues'.

The reason Skrtel has survived so long has been Agger's injuries, Sakho being out of favour and Lovren's deficiencies meaning that backing up or replacing him has never been a high enough priority. But he's still a weakness in the line.

Agree2 Disagree1

23 Nov 2015 13:10:48
Hijkle's post is spot on. The fact that he survived however many managers means absolutely nothing because his issues and flaws even after that period, still remain so what does that tell you. Last ditch tackles only means you were out of position to begin with so how is that a quality? Even Carra who played with him for years couldn't stand him as a CB partner. I agree he has improved under Klopp which makes Klopp a miracle worker in itself but don't fool urselves.

Agree2 Disagree0

23 Nov 2015 13:19:40
Klopp favours skrtel. OVER WHO!? Lovren has been injured and just came back, now Sakho's out, BR got rid of Wisdom, Kelly, Coates (probably helped Carra retire early too) and Ilori, Gomez is injured and Toure (just came back? ) Skrtel has no real competition, as long as he stays fit and other injure themselves. We will see where Skrtel is in 2 years as to whether Klopp favours him.

Ed001 has pointed out to you god knows how many times the reason Skrtel gets a lot of stick.

Sorry but there is no ''favouring'' going on, he has had no choice but to play him really.

Agree4 Disagree0

23 Nov 2015 14:56:02
Bob

Skrtel paired with Sakho when Lovren was fit and fine sitting on the bench and that would continue through out.

Klopp preferes Skrtel as the RCB.

Why should he wait two mroe years, He is 30+ and has been playing for the cliub from 7 years.
This is his last contract imo.

Agree0 Disagree1

23 Nov 2015 18:27:09
He paired best with Agger, and a few seasons ago they were rated as the best defenive partnership in the league. They clicked, but he hasn't done so well with other pairings.

I'd go so far as to say a big part of Lovren's struggles last season because of Skrtel although we were just so poor going backwards it can't solely be that - BR was naive in defensive.

I was surprised the club negotiated on his new contract; I hope Illori get's his chance come January. I think Klopp is the kind of manager to bring him on. Back to Skrts - he is nearing the latter stages of his career, the club has to be looking to long term solutions.

Lovren was out for a montha from mid september and missed 7 games. Even then I'm not sure Lovren replaces Skrtel. As I don' think either have shown themselves over the last year or so to be reliable. Lovren is a left CB too. You can' really say Klopp prefers any one he's been in charge for about 5 games of which he's rotated the squad in Europe and been forced to play Skrtel as we have no other right centre back.

Like I say we will see where Skrtel is in 2 years. I;m saying 2 years, as I;m expecting that's the point when Klopp will have built the squad HE wants and he PREFERS.

Vigouroux played the full 90 as swindons awful form continued losing 5-1 to Fleetwood.

Wisdom played the full 90 as Norwich lost 1-0 to Chelsea.

Ward played the full 90 and McLaughlin was an unused sub as Aberdeen drew 1-1 with Hamilton.

Markovic was an unused sub as fenerbache won 3-1.

Harry Wilson was a 70th min sub as Crewe lost 5-1 to Peterborough.

Yesil was an unused sub as luzern won 1-0.

Canos came on as a 60th minute sub and within minutes scored the opener as Brentford beat forest 2-1.

Ryan Kent played the full 90 as Coventry beat Gillingham 4-1.

All other loanees not mentioned are either injured or didn't make the match day squads.

What a ridiculous comment LionRed. Just because he's not being picked for Fenerbache doesn't mean that he's not good enough.

Harry Kane was deemed a failure at a few of his loans and didn't always play, but look at him now!

Wait till he's back playing under Klopp, I think he is exactly the type of player Klopp will love, and will prove a good squad player.

He's 20 years old! I'd prefer him to be part of our squad and klopp making that call ( who I'd say is better judged than anyone to see if he's good enough) than him sitting on the bench of a team that has no interest in progressing him as a player. He's not good enough. he's not fast, he does not have any finishing qualities and he's poor in the final third. This is what I saw when he played for us. He didn't start for Fenerbache before his injury and I doubt he'll get much playing time now. we need a new speedy winger, that's the hard facts of the matter. Cause Ibe can't be our only fast player in the squad.

Agree1 Disagree10

{Ed001's Note - are you sure you have watched him play? Markovic is quick, I am doubting you have even watched him play if you think he is not fast.}

23 Nov 2015 12:00:34
Markovic did start before his injury and this was his first game back, much like Sturridge being on the bench on Sat. He's very fast indeed which suggests you're either talking about a completely different player or don't know what your talking about.
The problem Markovic may have in the Prem is that he's so slight, not that that's stopped other players, but it is a disadvantage.

Agree4 Disagree0

23 Nov 2015 12:07:57
Markovic is very quick like Ed001 said and how can you judge him on the basis he was constantly played out of position with Rodgers and the times he was pushed further forward he played better (not perfect but better) Klopp could get the best out of him i think as we need that wide right player.

It never dawned on me until now but when JK brought Kolo on do you think that could be to see if he can play in that position as cover for next weekend? I noticed he played along side Lucas and he used to play in midfield many moons ago . Thanks for any feed back
Jamesee.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

23 Nov 2015 07:42:35
I'd be surprised if that was the case. Kolo is just not mobile enough. He'd surely go with Joe Allen first? How far away is Rossiter? I'd personally have a look at Cameron Brannagan first. I know he's been training at Melwood lately, maybe Ed002 would have an opinion or a more "in the know" poster?

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - Kolo is much more mobile than Allen, so that makes little sense as a reasoning to use him instead of Kolo. Branagan is not a holding midfielder, it would be Chirivella for that role from the youth teams.}

23 Nov 2015 08:48:21
Ah that's right, I've heard chirivella mentioned as a holding mid. Not sure if I agree on kolo being more mobile than Allen, maybe a few years ago? Just my opinion.

Agree1 Disagree4

23 Nov 2015 09:48:34
I don't think Chirivella is anywhere near ready to play regular football for the 1st team. He doesn't even stand out when playing for the u-21s. At least a couple of years away from being ready. He needs to grow a lot for that to happen. Rossiter is more ready for that role.
