Just managed to watch some of the game as my daughter had mucked around with the digibox so only the 2nd half was recorded. When it did go to extra time, the recording cut out as soon as Cardiff scored their second goal. Tearing my hear out to get the final score. Gutted I missed the penalties but glad it went our way in the end. Fair play to Cardiff though, I always knew they'd be up for it and make things difficult for us. Aye, league cup champions 2012. YNWA!

At least i'm not alone, i had the match set to record, after the few hours delay i watched the match, was enjoying being 2-1 up with about 3-4 mins to go in extra time... then it cut out, i could only assume we had won it, so i waited until a replay was on today and saw Cardiff score no more than 1 minute after my recording cut out. Then had to watch Stevie and Charlie miss those penalties, i was a sweating, nervous wreck, thank christ it ended up the way it did.
Credit to Cardiff too, watching them play reminded me of how important it is to take your chances, they took their few chances and made 2 goals of it. Which made for a very tense match. We didn't capitalise on our chances and ended up just scraping through. So many thanks to Cardiff for the match and we may well see you a few times next year in the premier league if you can push through the play-off matches now.

Red7, I was bagging it for the last part of extra time. My daughter kept me level headed throughout the game though, copying her dad jumping up, shouting "yay!" when we scored. I'll make a red fan out of her yet!

It makes me laugh all these other fans coming on and slagging off the win. Had a ManU fan friend say the only reason they didn't take it seriously was to concentrate on CL...well that worked!! Arsenal.. would love to have their hands on a trophy right now (though good win today), ManC and Chealsea, well I thought we beat them to get to the final, no matter what it's still a win in our column and spurs , well 5-2 against your local rivals. So forgive me.. I think I'll celbrate just fine tonight with our cup! #itsthenameonthecupthatmatters!

Actually, your spelling was quite good. It's not really a response to the spelling. It's just that when people post things like "new he would miss his pen" (rubbishing one of the greatest players to ever play for our club) they leave a bit of an open goal.

Burton asked if this was the beginning of the end for Carra and I think Carra got a bit emotional and said that Burton was lucky to have his job after the Keyes and Gray sexism scandal in which Burton was suspended. Think he might've taken it the wrong way, but regardless Burton probably deserved it for his antics over the years.

i couldn't enjoy the match at all today and to be honest was a bag of nerves from the moment we conceded in the first half. I feel like more finals like this and I'm not to sure I'll be around to see many more as my poor ticker will probably call it a day and I wouldn't blame it. Special mention has to go to Cardiff though, i actually felt for them. I know there is never a nice way to lose in a final but penalties has to be the cruelest of ways.
Two players stood out for me today and that was Skrtel and Downing. Skrtel was immense today as he has been all season but my M.O.TM goes to Downing. Credit when credit is due, he was a constant threat out wide on the left and his standard of delivery was exceptional.
I know some fans will never be satisfied despite what anyone says and does but just to put some things into perspective. Same fans complaining about today's performance instead of enjoying the fact we have won our first piece of silverware in years are the same fans that were complaining earlier in the season when we were performing well and not getting the results to match. Granted it wasn't pretty and certainly not out finest performance but we got the the job done and history will read as follows, 2012 Carling Cup Winners Liverpool FC.

Disagree with disagreer. Andy can become great again, he just needs more support. If we have say Suarez Gerrard Andy and whoever is on the opposite wing to the crossee then we can attack the ball wherever it lands. Players can be small and sh*t in the air, but you get into the box it may just fall to you or the defence clear it out for a corner due to your pressure. We seem to only have 1 or two players in for a cross against 4-5 defenders. Its just not a good tactic and something I feel the team need to work on.

Thought I'd take he opportunity to get a few thoughts down after today's cup final "thrill ride". It was a huge relief (and joy) to win today but I can't help thinking that today's team is a long way behind the 2008/9 team that came so close, in almost every position.
Starting with Andy Carroll; I'm sorry, I just don't get it. I know it's not his fault we paid so far over his true value, but he shows no real drive or determination. Today he wasn't even trying to get into the positions where he would cause the most damage, preferring to wait at the edge of the area rather than take a chance by going inside. Downing began to provide some real opportunities for him today but he showed no initiative or desire. Kuyt needed to be brought on a lot sooner today, and when he was brought on, he showed that's he's superior to Carroll when he's played in his best position.
Suarez did not work against an organised defensive unit like Cardiff - he (and the whole team) generally seem to work better on the counter. He also seemed worryingly short of pace at times today and short of ideas; he frequently lost possession when a good first touch was needed more than a first time pass or flick.
Downing was excellent, Adam sound (but still is Alonso-) and Gerrard is struggling to have the impact he has had previously and hopefully will again. Henderson was shockingly bad albeit while being played out of position - that's still no excuse for that appalling "air-shot" attempt at a volley.
The defence is good at the moment but Henrique and Johnson do stand off far too much - they both need to get tighter to the man.
I worry because I desperately want the team to move forward but I can't see it happening at the moment. I know some people here don't agree with the importance of Champions League qualification, but the reality is any serious contender needs both the revenue and the draw it offers for top players. Hopefully today's win will give the team the boost they need - the battle for 4th is going all the way, and we desperately need a win against Arse next weekend to get things going again.

All this moaning and groaning about the way we played, well frankly I don't give a rats ass. Cup finals, like derby games are often played with nerves and the occassion getting the better of certain players. Today was that day and yes a few players looked nervous, most notably Henderson, Carroll and surprisingly Suarez. But others stood up and made real name for themselves.
Skrtel, who has been immense all season, surely must be the most improved player this season. Kuyt, who wasn't on for long, showed his passion and commitment for our club and is really a man for the big occasions. Most amazingly Downing, was unreal today. All season he's looked a shadow of himself, but today like last week, he's starting to show why we brought him. He has great pace and stamina, good balance and excellent crossing. It's such a shame that he can't do it week in week out but that may come soon.
Finally praise to Kenny. He's bounced back from what was a badly managed situation with Suarez, with the press and fans (on this site) on his back. He's showed his strength of character and confidence in his players, which inspires confidence and earns us victory, today and hopefully more games to come.
It's great to have a cup after all this time, it's great to have a Wiley experienced manager and quality assistant and it's great to have a squad starting to gel and become a wonderful team. We need a couple of additions and a few players need to step up, but we're getting there and I for one am in for the ride, come what may.

Extra credit to Downing. He played on the right when Bellamy came on, and still played well. Not as effective, but still a major contributor. Not many wingers can perform that well on their non-preferred side.

If the bloke put in as much energy in the match as he did racing towards Pepe in celebration, and, as he did spraying the Champagne around then I wouldn't be on his back, but he didn't, the bloke is simply NOT good enough! he lacks energy, mobility and as for that "cultured" left foot, well, he either left that on Balckpool beach or he gnawed it off desperate for something to eat - his penalty exemplified that ... the bloke isn't up to the standard we require.
Hats off to Jamie and his post match interview with the Sky reporter ... it wasn't that "ar#eh#le" Shreeves (Kenny probably made sure of that), but yet another scum scraper .... you were lucky not to loose your job after the Wolves incident (words to that effect)! excellent Jamie! how to say - F##k off without actually saying it!

Ahoy - and well done to everyone who follows, supports, works for, plays for, looks out for, or own Liverpool Football Club.
We are 120 years old this year and have 40 trophies. I make no apologies to anyone for being so happy as todays feeling is a once in 1000 day occurence.
Every player was great - because we won.
I watched it on BBC and sky +'d it as JR Superstar was in the studio spouting his utter rubbish. I watched it back afterwards and at half time he said Cardiff deserved to be in front, at 90 mins he said we were fortunate to be in the game, at 120 minutes he said nerves had got the better of us and Cardiff deserved "something from the game" after the penalties he said he was "disapointed in the penalty takers as Suarez and Bellamy were not strong enough mentally to take penalties" Kenny and the club gave this buffoon a career and it was obvious today he has no respect for us.
We won a big shiny trophy Jamie and your Dad got whipped by Arsenal.
I am certain "Our Arry" won't get a £100k cheque into the goldfish's bank account tomorrow and if he is still having difficulty with the language I will personally read him the back pages of the paper tomorrow.

How funny is this post?! we troubled the top sides all throughout the season. we knocked city out of one cup, knocked united out of the other. we've beat arsenal and beat chelsea twice. what more proof do you actually want?
united lost to crystal palace...! cardiff were always going to be tough, it's the biggest stage of their life's, a 5/10 player would boost that up to 8 or 9 as it's the biggest match of their life. we did well, we weren't perfect but we stuck in there and won the cup.

Looked sluggish! He played 120+ minutes and looked fresher than a lot of players 10 years younger than him! And thats after being out with a long term injury too.
I also felt he would miss. I said so to the missus - but my reasoning was different to yours.
The best ones always miss.
Stevie is certainly one of the best. Not his best game certainly, but he led us to victory. Show some respect. He's our leader on the pitch!

Firstly, well done for Today, regardless of the style it was won in, on who played best at the end of the day you put the ball in the net when it mattered most.
It may only be the League Cup but everyone has to start somewhere. All I'm going to say is enjoy this success regardless of the trophy but remember that you still need to strengthen in quality and depth if you're going to mount a serious challenge for the league , I think you're still 3 or 4 signings away from being able to hold down a top 4 spot (not get it, hold it down, permanently).
So, like I said, well done, you done what was needed, celebrate your win but lets treat it like a domestic success and not go overboard with the "we're coming back" comments. Last time that happened you didn't win anything else until, well now. haha.

At the end of the day Liverpool only had three trophies to play for this season, the league, F.A. Cup and the Carling cup.
Realistically we were never going to win the league so to have won one of the two cups available to us, and doing well in the other is a great achievement.
The reason we support our clubs is to watch them lift trophies, we have done that today. There is likely to be many disappointed fans from other clubs who will not see that this year.

I've read below how some of us disappointed with the performance and pointed fingers at some players while we are still playing, I'm ok with it but some comments are just plain negative. For many years, we were crying out loud for ugly wins that will take us further, and this is one of them. This is the day when all of us Liverpool fans should unite and celebrate together at the moment. This is what we have been waiting for in a long time and now the feeling of pride and glory is back to us and everyone involves with Liverpool FC. First year in charge for King Kenny and we won the cup and still progressing, the happiness and the team moral are positively connected, which is a great foundation that Kenny has installed. Overall, I'm very happy and glad that we at least have gain some momentums from the nightmare we have couple/few seasons ago. You Will Never Walk Alone.

I thought we deserved it. Cardiff played the role of under dogs fantastically and they are a credit to their club. But we were on top for the vast majority of the game.
In my opinion LFC have now contested the greatest EPL game 4-3 against Newcastle, the greatest end to a league campaign 2-0 versus Arsenal (unfortunately), the greatest Champions League final (no explanation needed), the greatest Uefa/Europa cup final 5-4 against Aalves, the greatest FA Cup final 3-3 against West Ham.
Is this the greatest league cup final too?

Those were all posted on the Man Utd banter page (don't understand how??).
Ye won the Carling Cup against Cardiff, who every year f**k up and fail to get promoted. They held ye for 120 minutes and it went to penalties. Its not that great an achievement to be honest. Man Utd haven't been playing their best at the moment, but we are still 2nd, and within touching distance of Man City, whereas Liverpool are in sixth? (not sure to be honest). Sure ye can celebrate Liverpool winning their first cup in 6 years, but ye are not really in a position to say Man Utd are in decline and that ye are better. Man Utd still have a chance to win the league and the UEFA cup, whereas Liverpool aren't even in Europe and most likely won't finish in top 4, no offence. Maybe next year if ye are in the position we are ye can start saying we are in decline.
Anyway, well done to the Liverpool lads. Maybe they didn't play great, but they still won and thats all that matters at the end of the day.

There is absolutely no doubt that manchester united will win the UEFA Cup as they would appear to be the only team taking part. He did not play well. His shot in the 2nd minute was a peach, but other than that he was average at best. I noticed on at least 3 occasions when Cardiff broke away on the counter attack, Glen Johnson was standing in central midfield doing absolutely nothing. His mad roaming is getting worse and more dangerous.

120 minutes against a Cardiff team that were drained after 80 minutes and we only get a 2-2 draw, We were blessed to win it on peno's but in all honesty this win changes nothing, i want liverpool to be challenging for league titles, i just hope this cup win make us complacesent, We need a major over haul in the summer, I think Kenny is passed it, His signings have been awful all season and again today, Carroll, adama nd henderson were shocking. The bloke interviewing carra basically said to carra that he'd really made the most of the win and was that because this is his last season. Carra said are you the manager and also said you were lucky to be in the job after wolves. The bloke interviewing asked carra another question and carra gave him a glare and snarl then walked away.

Cardiff showed how solid a team they have become and did Wales proud. But Liverpool's extra quality just came through on the day. Goodness me that was Birmingham all over again! I have to say the boys were very poor today. That's the worst I've seen Luis play so sell him now (joke). Henderson had my blood boiling too he was extremely poor and the sub was made at the right time. As for Downing that was as close to a £20m performance I've seen from him he was fantastic and the standout player by far for us. Well done Stu and please keep it up! A mention to our flying Dutchman as well he was superb when he came on. And did anyone see the Gerrard pen save? Awesome from the Cardiff keeper. The engineering train's derailment, near Winsford, has meant the cancellation of trains from Liverpool Lime Street to Crewe.
Fans going to the match, against Cardiff City at Wembley, were advised to reach Crewe or other stations by alternative means.
Virgin Trains apologised and said coaches would be laid on.
"Due to the high number of passengers intending to travel from Liverpool/Runcorn to London for the football at Wembley it is recommended that if possible they consider driving to Crewe, Stafford or Stoke stations and use rail services from there," a spokesman said.
"Coaches will be provided to connect Liverpool and Crewe and Runcorn and Stafford," a spokesman said.

Torres has lost his acceleration off the mark/pace which was his best asset (knee injury). Whilst he might regain his confidence which will lead to his touch/finishing returning, he will never be the same player we saw.

Hey eds the pool never make it easy for themselves in cup finals normally making us fans sweat so I'm hoping for a less tense game today;) ps u should start a dart page it's the 2nd biggest sport in uk nowadays {Ed001's Note - people have suggested that in the past, but none of the editors we have know anything about it, other than playing it in the pub after a few bevvies. I dont know why so many people look down they,re noses at darts its a great sport and a fantastic spectator sport and players like phil taylor don,t get enough credit for what he has achieved 15 times world champion if that was any other sport he would be well known in every household in the country and it is definately a sport any person who puts eight hours practice in a day has got to be classed as a sport if its not a sport surely the same can be said about snooker and golf and no one ever questions them as sports
