Despite the defeat I'm still really pleased with the way we are playing; except in defence.

Personally I wouldn't play Skrtle. He always seems to be blocking and saving the day with last minute challenges and there is no doubt he is committed to the cause. However, we have conceded in most games since his return.

I prefer defenders to be reading the game and in control so that they aren't always reacting to issues in a desperate fashion e.g. Alan Hansen or Beckenbauer.

With this in mind and all the publicity regarding shirt pulling I think it is time Toure came back in to help provide solidity especially at set pieces.

skrtel for me seems to get targeted by tactics of opposing managers, to put it bluntly imo he hasn't the balls to do the ugly side of being a centre half which in itself is strange considering how far he has come in the game, in a weird way some games he is fine but when targeted closely by a strong forward he starts grabbing and getting to close he dosent seem to realish the battle which for me is imperative in this position.i would like to see toure with either agger r sackho at some point I seen cara saying it would be hard for sackho and agger to play togeather as they r both left footed cbs so toure comes in with either.

Eds we've been linked with Iturbe again in January. Is there any truth in this or is it just bad rumours that ain't going to happen?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have explained before. Where do you get this nonsense from every day?}

Iturbe is on loan to some Italian club, parent club is Porto. U can't just cancel a loan move so that another club can buy the player.

When can we expect the artist sketches and details of capacity of the redeveloped anfield

Believable0 Unbelievable0

See info by LFC fan, and architect, Peter McGurk.
He suggests it will simply be "up and overs" on Main Stand and Anfield Road.
Nothing too fancy at all.
Functional and relatively affordable.

Eds (great site btw) is there any chance at all that Liverpool can sign Mata in January? (I don't think it is at all likely but would be great and he has been rumoured with us in the past). Also, do you know the latest news with Pastore? Thanks in advance!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I don't know of any links to Mata. Pastore may well be moving next summer - and it is possible that PSG will let him leave in January if a suitable bid is made or if an offer of a loan and guaranteed playing time is possible. I understand that AC Milan, Roma and Fenerbahce have asked to be informed if Pastore is available and his agent has spoken with Napoli, Zenit and AC Milan in addition to both Chelsea and Spurs. Right now his form is questionable as it was for most of last season and the player may well wish to move on if he does not get a regular place in the team. His agent has suggested also that Napoli have approached him directly. Right now, the interest of Liverpool is speculative only although they did make an enquiry about the player in 2010. Roma and Napoli would seem the two most viable options if he were to be available.}

Ed what do you mean that his form was questionable last year, as thought despite not watching him, wasn't he Chelsea's player of the season?

Cheers

Neil Jones wrote of Liverpool:

"Pretenders? Yes, but it might not be long before those first three letters are changed."

What? What are those three letters? B-A-R? Bartenders? I know we missed a few chances but a career change for our guys seems a bit drastic.

Must've meant Agger is due for a return to the side, after that shocking showing from Skittles.

On another note, who here thinks it's possible that everyone's favourite poster Harry is someone working in the same twisted humour as Carles from Hipster Runoff?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

C-O-N might be the three letters Neil was talking about?
Hopefully he's right

Agree0 Disagree0

Be careful, it's a con.

I dunno if your joking around but I think he means were CONtenders.

We looked really good against the 14 ManC players (Ref and Lines included) but still I just hope we strengthen in key areas come Jan cause if we can face ManC and just poor decisions along with a few errors i'd say we can be proud of what we have achieved so far this year and we will be better I believe as we are continually building character a fight. Hello Eds,
How was the Christmas, with Moses ineligible to play (I am happy) do you have any idea who is going to be included in the squad. I personally think it is IBE.

Thanks

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I would expect it to be Ibe.}

Ibe was injured in FA youth cup against Blackpool guys. Don't know how serious it was but didn't look good. I can see either Jack Dunn or Jordan Rossiter on the bench myself. YNWA

Agree0 Disagree0

Ibe is injured. I think it will be Kelly.

Would you be able to give an update on the Rodgers situation? No doubt the FA are going to try and make an example. Thanks

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Why is he a threat to FA?, should they not investigate the officials of the match, this is not the first time that Liverpool was stolen from clear goals and points, I find this terrible

Agree0 Disagree0

There are already plenty of examples. If guilty he'll get a fine which the club will pay. Move along, nothing to see here.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - The "club will pay"? Rather embarrassing for LFC, but not to worry.}

28 Dec 2013 00:42:55
No disrespect intended Ed, but i'm not embarrassed about what Brendan said, and i'm sure no one else is. Very few of us seem to be dwelling on the defeat, and have been taking positives from it, but come on, any one with eyes could see he made some poor decisions, including Skrtel's shirt pulling. Brendan just said what we were all feeling. Gutting to know we could perhaps have won a game where we were serious underdogs if it weren't for poor decisions by the officials. Decisions like this can have a big impact on our season, including club finances (if we lose points and fail to get top 4). I'm sure the owners wouldn't be impressed with that either. Now Bremdan has said something it may actually be looked into. May.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - You did not read it.}

Embarrassment? Nonsense. The only person that should be embarrassed is the Ref. I think all the Liverpool fans agree with Rodger's comments. Who cares what FA thinks?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Someone else who did not read it.}

I'm sure a Chelsea fan will be used to this scenario.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Why make it about me?}

Im pretty sure ed002 meant that the fine would be paid by BR. Why would the club pay it when it was BR who went on the rant?

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Ed002 meant that the fine will be paid by BR, not the club.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think the club will pay any fine. Rodgers said what everyone else knew was the truth and said it in defence of the club. If the FA fine him then I think the club will take care of it.
It happens all the time, Fergie, Mourinho etc incurred dozens of FA/Premier League fines which the club just pays off.
I doubt they will announce it, but they will take care of it in my opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I hope not, it would be wrong of the club to do so, just like any fine levied purely at staff. I very much doubt they will anyway, I think you are dreaming quite frankly.}

27 Dec 2013 20:13:20
Not sure if I think we should sign this Mohamed Salah player. If the ed is right and he has said he would only consider Utd, Chelsea or Madrid, then in my opinion its his loss and bugger him. i'd like us to sign players who want to play for us.

Skirtel always has a mistake in him, I have never been his biggest fan. He gets away with it against teams we score three or four goals, but in games against the better teams when games are decided on small margins I think he costs us. Plus he has forgotten how to defend at corners! I'd play Toure.

Hi Eds, with all this Left Back talk linking us with Cole, Bertrand etc I was pleased to see Brad Smith on the bench yesterday. I hope he gets his chance at LB as think he's going to be one hell of a player.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ed001 if your about just your opinion, do you think Rodgers is too trusting in Johnson to drop him? Or to distrusting in Kelly, Toure, McLaughlin? I do rate Johnson's but as you've mentioned before he lacks concentration, the past 5 games at least he should have been dropped, I wince whenever he's on the ball, also who do you think is the main threat at Chelsea for the upcoming game I'm confident in the team but fear hazard will get the better of Johnson.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - he rates Johnson highly, he performs well in training by all accounts, and he does have such immense ability. Kelly isn't ready to play every week, he needs to be eased back in, Toure is not a right back and McLaughlin is not seen as ready. I do believe Rodgers would like to ease Kelly in a little more, and I am sure he will do so as the season goes on, no doubt Johnson will pick up a knock, then it gives someone a chance to stake a claim to the place.}

Ok cheers ed, I'm loving the middle three and front three at the moment they just need to be more clinical in front of goal especially Allen, it would do him a world of good to score!

Agree0 Disagree0

I think McLaughlin has been injured for the past 2-3 weeks. He should be back now.

Eds fellow reds, the malky situation is dreadful . Good manager, seem a good bloke, can come and work for our club as a coach if no one wants him .

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I guarantee he will only be out of work as long as he wants to be. There were a number of clubs sounding him out even before he was sacked. Still, Tan has managed to unite all the fans that he split with the red/blue thing, even if it is only united against him!}

27 Dec 2013 18:02:10
Eds do you see Lioril and Alberto going out on loan in January or anyone else to make way if expected players arrive?

As for Rakatic, I've just watched youtube clips he looks a decent player if the links are true, what's your opinion on him?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I am told the club would like them to settle in at Liverpool over the course of the season then assess the options in the summer, depending on how they are getting on.

I like Rakitic, have for a while, I think he would be a good option in our midfield, though not my first choice, he is the best of the possible options, imo.}

Many thanks with your reply Ed.

Can I just ask please who would be your first choice? And what's the chances of them?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - my first choice would be Javi Martinez, Paul Pogba or Gary Medel, little to no chance of any of those.}

Ed001, why do you rate Paul Pogba so highly? And how does our academy players compare to united's academy players?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - because he is an excellent player, with plenty of time to develop into an even better player. Our academy has moved ahead of United's in recent years, especially if you leave out ones bought (such as Sterling, Ibe etc for us and Janusaj for them) and just judge on the real measure of an academy - the players it brings through from the local area. Theirs is suffering from a lack of investment, while ours was recently overhauled completely.}

Thanks Ed001, definitely my favourite Ed.

Everything that Ed001 said about Skrtel before is 100% spot on. He's nothing but liability. But instead of Kolo, I think Agger and Sakho is the perfect CB partnership.

On the other hand, I still can't believe we loan both Cissokho and Moses. Cissokho plays like he is scared of the opponents and Moses is missing all the time. Even our youngsters are better than them! Why did we loan them in the first place? and how do you rate them? Would love Ed001's opinion on this.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I have never rated Moses, I think he is an awful player, but I was hoping he had improved at Chelsea. Seems he has just got lazier. Hopefully he will spend the second half of the season proving me wrong though!
Cissokho is a Liverpool fan, he used to look like he was a good option, but clearly his confidence has gone and he is struggling to recover it.
I can see why we loaned those two players, I just think we would have been better off giving kids a chance instead. For instance, hanging on to Suso and playing him early in the season instead of Moses, I think he would have done so much more.
At the end of the day, I really can't argue with Rodgers' decisions though, he has done well and has us playing some great football. I just hope we don't go down the loan route again, it is not worth it, far better to blood some youngsters, imo.}

27 Dec 2013 17:13:36
Gerrard should play CB vs Chavski. Imagine him with all that time on the ball knocking 60 yard passes. There strikers are useless too, so he won't have to mark or do anything infact.

Hello fello reds,

Long time reader, first time poster since the registration process.

I'm here in London(from the states) for my first Non exhibition Liverpool match. I was wondering if there is a Liverpool friendly pub near the Bridge for a couple prematch pints that someone could recommend. Also my wife seems up for wearing our Liverpool shirts at the match. I know the Chelsea fans can be a little harsh but is there any reason why we shouldn't show our support(we are sitting in general population)?

Can't wait to see us kick blue arse and get to see anfield in person in a few days. cheers!

YNWA

Chris

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I called someone who works in the media and follows Liverpool and asked - and was recommended the Coach and Horses at Clapham which is where he will be - this would be a couple of miles south. I would think plan B might be to check with the London Supporters Club who have a web page which I found easily: www.lfclondon.co.uk/lfcfriendlypubs/.}

Thanks for your help Ed. I used the London supporters site to locate a pub to watch yesterday's match. I was very disappointed by the turnout of fans at this pub and general excitement during the game despite the pub receiving a 10/10 rating. The supporters in Boston are much more engaged including singing YNWA and in game chants. We even tried to chat up a few locals at the pub but they weren't interested. It was not what we were expecting.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - You will not find that sort of thing in London. Certainly no where in the Chelsea area. Perhaps a nice wine bar and a meal - but they won't let you in anywhere decent wearing any type of football shirt. Perhaps someone travelling could recommend somewhere, but suspect you will need to wait until you get to Liverpool for that sort of thing.}

What you have to realise about Chelsea is despite the lively fans, the people of the general area of Kensington and Chelsea are very boring. They're pretty much up their own ***** there.

Agree0 Disagree0

The nearest Liverpool-friendly pub is in Wigan.!

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks ed02. We're going to hit up the pub that you recommended. In your opinion is it safe to wear my pool shirt or root for Liverpool inside the bridge?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I am not so sure that it is unsafe, I guess where you are seated makes a difference and I normally don't sit with football fans.}

The only one I can suggest near by is famous 3 kings in west Kensington . I haven't been in a while but saw a few games v Manchester United and v man city there and it was always packed with Liverpool supporters and I think the owner/manager was a Liverpool supporter too! Good luck and enjoy anfield!

hopes for 2014

we bring in 2-3 quality players in jan goal scoring midfielder brendan seems to want would be good. a winger maybe another striker.pastore, salah, and a player I would love to have in r system rossi although would he want to sit on the bench I doubt it. so somebody as a squad player to come in and do a job when needed prob the likes of shane long would be good addition.going forward into the summer hopefully we r buying to at least play in the qualifying rounds of the cl and for me brendan is going to have to sort these mistakes at the back a top class centre back somebody like big sami r mark wright that can mark at set pieces would do the job.And of course let's hope suarez is really for keeps and the new development has a spade in the ground asap.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Aspas is better than Shane long. He works just as hard and is clever on the ball. I don't see any chance of him leaving in January. That would be just foolish. I'd be happy with rakitic, salah, and a right back.

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Dec 2013 22:50:03
Long's not great, but I don't know how you could say Aspas is better than him. Aspas played a few games at the start of the season. I could barely comprehend how ineffective he was in them, then he got injured and has played 11 minutes of football despite being on the bench for 4 comfortable wins that provided an excellent opportunity to give the lad some game time. (Makes me speculate that Rodgers has decided he's made a mistake and wants to get shot of him as quickly and quietly as possible.)

That's better than Long in your opinion is it? You must really not like Long.

Maureen is up to his usual mind-games. He's saying that Liverpool have the advantage of winning the title because we play 40 games and Chelsea play 60. In honesty, I will be really glad to beat the rent boys and their boring way of football. They're just an expensive version of Stoke.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He's right, we are fresher and that is 20 less games for our player to pick up knocks and pull things. We get 6 days to prepare for a team, we can train harder Monday and tuesday because the guys still have 4 or 5 days until the next game keeping us fitter.

We should go for Cabaye he's class!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree with u on that mate. But I think we will end up signing Rakitic who is also a damn good player and can score a handful of goals from midfield which we are lacking right now. Also with Sevilla well documented financial problems, we could well end up paying less than 10 million for Rakitic which would be an absolute steal. ON the other hand, Cabaye would be prices at around 20 million pounds and I doubt BR would use all that money on one player

Afternoon eds and contributors.

It's pretty much the halfway point in the season so I thought I would give an HONEST assessment of the squad (the ones that play) so far.

Mignolet : Brilliant addition to the squad . Yes he made a mistake yesterday but he’s already gained us points with outstanding displays, Stoke, Villa and Everton spring to mind.
Johnson: Pedestrian, lazy and at times looks uninterested. Time to cash in on him and give someone else a chance at RB I think.
Toure: A great addition to the squad. Along with Mignolet, Toure was responsible for the great start to the season we made. A commanding presence on the field and provides a wealth of experience of it.
Skrtel: Showed patience and waited for his chance. At times he looks back to his best but seems to be insistent on pulling shirts in the box, only a matter of time until he costs us points by giving away a penalty.
Sakho: A shaky start but now seems to have found his feet (apart from a crazy 10 minutes against City). He’s strong in the tackle, good in the air and quick. Will only get better!
Agger: Looks confident when he plays but has lost his place. He will need to show the same patience as Skrtel and wait for his chance.
Enrique: Still our best LB but has suffered from injury.
Cissokho: I’m not sure what to make of him to be honest – he seems to get caught out position and doesn’t stop crosses from coming in, and he doesn’t seem to affect the game going forward. Maybe he just needs games to get his confidence, or maybe he’s just not good enough.
Flanagan: For a young RB to play LB and perform at the level he has is remarkable. I’m still not 100% sure whether he will make it at Liverpool but he’s damn well giving it his all. Good luck to the lad.
Lucas: With injuries now behind him, and bad injuries at that, he now seems to be back to his best. He’s playing consistently well again. He still annoys me with the silly fouls he gives away in dangerous areas but I suppose that’s down to the role he plays.
Henderson: Brilliant! If he can just add a few more goals to his game then he will have cracked it.
Allen: He appears to be growing in confidence every game, not quite at the level he was showing when he first signed but he’s getting there.
Gerrard: His delivery from dead ball situations has been top quality this year (apart from corners, I can take a better corner; at least I can clear the first man). We all know his legs are going and he can’t play the game the way he used to, but he’s still an important member of the team. My personal opinion is that he needs to be phased out of the starting 11. His injury could have given BR an easy way to do this. We play better football when he isn’t in the team. We keep the ball a hell of a lot better AND we press a lot higher up AND a lot faster AND for the whole game! He’s still a massive player for us but I hope he doesn’t just walk back into the team when he’s fit. He should have to earn his place – like Skrtel did and like Agger is doing now.
Coutinho: Is starting to show the form he did last year. His injury set him back I think but he’s scored a couple of goals lately and his technical ability and his range of passing was always going to shine through again. In my opinion he needs to play centrally in the number 10 role, he’s much more dangerous there. It’s good that our front 3 is pretty fluid because he doesn’t end up stuck out wide. He’s taking one for the team at the minute I think. I believe BR wants him in the n.10 role but can’t get him in there at the moment. Great player!
Sterling: Playing really well at the moment, he seems to be playing with great confidence and is actually running at players and scaring them. He appears to have added goals to his game which is a massive plus. If he wants to keep his place in the team when Sturridge is fit and new recruits are added then he needs to keep his performance levels up and keep scoring goals.
Moses: I was excited when we signed him. That excitement didn’t last long though. I don’t know if he’s sulking because he’s not starting games but when he comes on he adds absolutely nothing. He seems, like Johnson, to be lazy and uninterested. I would rather Ibe was given the chance.
Aspas: Technically good player. He’s quick and can supposedly finish, but he needs playing time and needs to put a bit of timber on. The jury is still out for me.
Sturridge: Before his injury he was quite brilliant. He did everything a striker should; held the ball up, fetched others into play, ran in behind, took players on and of course scored a lot of goals. I just hope he continues with the form he’s shown for Liverpool when he returns.
Suarez: What can I say? He does things other pro footballers can only dream of, never mind us fans. He seems to be turning over a new leaf as well which is brilliant. Whether he’s here next season or not, Suarez has been sensational.

I hope we don’t bring in too many players in January, two should be enough I think. CM and a winger should be the priorities in my opinion. We are only involved in two competitions so with two more additions our squad should be more than big enough. We need quality not quantity this season.

referees today were at their worst
But they shouldn't be called biased

under Dalglish he was regarded as england's best right back
There was no motivation in him yesterday Hopefully Mclaughlin is ready in a season or two

Everyone keeps raving about Rakitic's 33million pound release clause but how low do the ends think Sevilla would accept a bid given their financial trouble, 7-8million has been quoted, which for a player of his quality would be a steal. My question is if Rakitic and Salah or two other players come in in January do they expect players to leave? Will Aspas be loaned, Will Moses or Cissokho be sent back?, can't see any space for them in the squad when Gerrard, Flanno and Enrique return, Cissokho is third choice left back now and I rate young Luis alberto as a better attacking midfielder than moses.

My take on the city game.
I have seen us play better but I thought we played quite well. We more than had our moments in this game.
Poor marking and dealing with the incoming ball rather than the players shirt cost us for 1 goal and Skertel in my opinion is at fault for the second goal as well. As they highlighted after the game it is Skertel who opens up the pass for Navas to slide in Negredo in for the second goal.
Skertel has been immense this season no-one can deny this but yesterday, arguably both goals are down to his bad judgement. Sahko had a funny 10 mins there as well but I thought he otherwise did ok. Cissokho played ok and was not a weak link and the whole team including Skertel played pretty well.
I think the penalty shouts even themselves out to be honest. Skertel could have been penalised more than once which offsets the suarez penalty late on. The ref was a bit of a homer but they mainly always are in the big games because the crowd does sway the odd decision!
The offside was awful though wasn't it. Where's Sian Massey when you need her!
Rodgers was right to highlight the offside though.
In the context of the game, the offside did not matter much, we did score the first goal soon after anyway but it's not the first time we have been done by poor officiating (everton away last year springs to mind) and the game may have gone a different way had that goal been given ( maybe Hart fouls Sterling and is sent off for example).
All in all I thought we did well and were unlucky not to claim at least a point. 12pts from 15 is not bad form and hopefully Rodgers can continue his run of not losing 2 games in a row against Chelsea.
I said to my mate this season. All I want is for Liverpool to compete this year. Well we are competing and after Sunday (chelsea away) the worst position we can be in is being 6pts off the top of the league.
I would have snapped your hand off for that at the start of the season. The city players were relieved to get that win and that speaks volumes for the way we are playing at the moment and as for winning the league. Why can't we win it! Apparently everyone else can win it but we can't for some reason.
I suggest every fan takes a look at our form after Sunday's game at Chelsea to see the massive improvement we have made in 2013.
If we keep to the same level of form for the next few months then we are right in the middle of all the other top teams. Sunday's game for me is a bonus game. We beat Spurs which is the equivalent of drawing against City, Spurs and Chelsea anyway so I hope we go for it and try to win the game.
I would be tempted to play Toure and Agger but I think Sahko will keep his place. I think either Agger or Toure will replace Skertel for Sunday.
I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday period Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

Spot on. Sian Massey is best assistant referee in the Prem. She would have known how to judge an offside properly. Yesterday's call was truly terrible.

For the free kick that Lucas conceded which led to their corner and first goal, is it just me or was Lucas being fouled rather than the other way around?

Also Glen Johnson annoys me so much. When he is one on one with a defender he tries to go past him but he just doesn't have the skill to do so, not to mention the fact that these days he runs like he's got weights attached to his feet. His footwork is extremely slow

Skrtel is a good tackler, but how can we continue to play a centre back who just doesn't want to even try to win headers, and instead tries to impede attackers from jumping properly?

Cissokho wasn't too bad, but it is times like these when you realise just how important enrique is to our team.

It is way to tight at the top of the table, and even though we are playing well, I can't help but feel Manchester United are catching up with us. I don't think Everton will be able to finish in the top 4, and spurs look a completely different side to last season, so our main challenger for fourth will be United. I hope we can hold them off.

Hi Ed001, I wanted to ask your opinion on a couple of questions if that's okay?

Firstly, who would you like to see us buy in Jan or summer from realistic options and who would you like to see them replace?

Secondly, with young Smith on the bench yesterday, who would you like to see given a chance on the bench or for part of a match from our outstanding crop of youngsters? Any time this season really.

Thanks as always and I hope you and the team of Eds had splendid Christmas's.

Cheers,
Bryan

{Ed001's Note - I think it would be dangerous to add too many players in January, as it can unbalance a side, especially one that is already in good form. Personally I would just like to see 2 additions. The first one to push/replace Sterling and provide another option, so that we never have to suffer Moses again, Salah looks the most realistic option. Secondly, I would add another option in central midfield, to replace any one of Gerrard, Henderson or Allen, or simply just to keep them playing so well to hold onto their place. That would be Rakitic.

The youngsters would be McLaughlin, though it is very difficult for him with Kelly and Flanno both being options at right back, Baio (who I think could provide us that strength and bite in midfield we lack, though is also yet another potential right back!), and Rossiter.}

Re Rakitic I live in Seville, and word has it that his wife (a Sevillana) would not be too happy with a move away.

Exactly what I want there ed salah looking the more likely though am I right?

{Ed001's Note - well more likely of the two, though Sevilla do have to sell players again soon.}

Last time I saw him, looked like he needed locking away in the gym for six months.

I haven't seen Rakitic play very much. Could you just tell me what type of a player he is and where he'd play. If you seem to think he would be a good addition, I just feel the need to know. Thanks in advance, cheers.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he is a central midfielder, decent all rounder rather than someone who stands out in any particular way, so to speak. He is one of those that seems to play well every time I see him, and is creative in his play, and technically proficient too. He doesn't get up and down like Hendo, but he is capable of getting forward and covering the back four as well. The thing which most stands out for me, as something we need, is he scores goals as well as creating them.}

He is similar to Yohan Cabaye.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - that is a very good comparison mate.}

Cabaye eh? That would really add another dimension to our attack, and defense to some extent. Would have loved Cabaye himself but saw somewhere that it was not possible. And someone who can get goals from midfield, which we have been desperate for, will be much appreciated.

Morning reds,

Before yesterday I didn't really see us as realistic title contenders, being top of the league is great, but we still had our two biggest fixtures of the season to play. We all know the aim for this season was to get top 4. However looking at that performance, I don't see any other team (other than City - obv) in the league being able to contain a performance like that. Clumsy mistakes lead to two goals for them, but these are mistakes that on another day wouldn't happen. The word on the street is that most neutrals think we deserved the win yesterday, as do I.

The second half to our season sees us play all of the current top 6 at home, and from what i've seen we've been getting better and better, with Sturridge and Gerrard yet to return. If we can keep up this momentum, and that's a big if, we can give City a run for their money in May. Winning the league is a game of consistency after all. May eat my words at the weekend, depending on the result, but right now i'm feeling optimistic. Nice to see our Blue neighbours up there as well, would love it if we both made top 4.

Cheers guys, hope you've all had a happy Christmas

Just repeating what others have said already, but I was so proud of the team and their effort! I always try to be fair and as unbiased as possible but I think we probably did enough second half to deserve all 3 points but would have been delighted with one also.

Sparing the stupid linesman's decision and a couple of more minor calling errors it was a blinding game!

End to end stuff, frantic, full of pace and creativity. We certainly did not play with the fear we seemed to last year (2012-13) against some teams and the days of more pointless back passes seem to have largely vansihed!

GREAT GAME LADS!
Thanks Eds as always and hope you got christmas wish list

In a fan of skrtle but in the last few weeks he's looked lost. Personally I would play him and agger because they have a good understanding with each other were him and sakho look like they struggling to communicate. For me glen should be dropped or replaced because he's been terrible in recent months. We need Enrique fit and. Playing and cut out the daft mistakes because apart from our defence we look a match fo anyone si bring on Chelsea and get back to winning ways.

good luck redmen

I don't know what's happened to the guy.
Started to play the player instead of the ball.
He was pulled out of position on a few occasions yesterday but at the same time made some FANTASTIC tackles.
If he can stop this stupid shirt pulling (which I think is going to cost us soon) he will be worth his place in the squad.

To be fair he also made a few great covering tackles and interceptions which would have lead to shots on goal. He got out muscled by Kompany for the first goal. Sahko would have dealt with him better but that's up to Rodgers who they are meant to mark.

Just like to wade in amd defend Mignolet who will no doubt get stick for the secomd City goal. Yes, he's not covered himself in glory, but in a one on one, whos expected to win? The striker. The fault for that goal lies with the centre backs. They are 2 on 1 with Negredo and Skrtel runs off out of position chasing the ball leaving Sakho 1 on 1 with Negredo. Instead of sticking with City's only striker Sakho follows Skrtel, leaving Negredo with acres of space. Poor. The whole game Sakho and more so Skrtel looked lost positionally, Skrtels only good moments coming from last-ditch tackles he wouldn't have had to have made if he had been in the proper position in the first place. So IMO to blame Mignolet for loosing a 1 on 1 he shouldn't have even faced is harsh.
Brendan needs to play Agger or Toure with Sakho and find a holding mid with more presence than Lucas to give cover. Then we will find ourselves with a more solid defence.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

What people need to start understanding is how well the team actually played. Hull is the only other team this season to go to the Etihad and not concede three or more goals. It was an outstanding performance, looking at the stats we deserved a draw but we didn't take the chances we created.
Mignolet, Skrtel and Sakho made mistakes. Mignolet should have stopped Negredo's shot but he didn't and that will be easily forgiven and fogotten.
Skrtel and Sakho's positioning for Negredo's goal was poor, but again that is easily forgiven and forgotten.
Sakho's passing was very worrying in the second half but that is unlike him, he is usually one of the best defenders.
They will learn from these mistakes and I doubt anything like the Negredo goal will happen again.
The main issue I have is Martin Skrtel during set pieces, his marking is very dangerous with his constant shirt pulling. He runs the risk of giving away penalties without actually stopping the player he is marking. It seems to be apart of his game and it's why we look so weak at defending set pieces, either he cuts it out or we should cut him out of the team.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would say that Skrtel and Sakho got pulled out of position due to good movement by Citeh.

Every time they won the ball they brok straightaway with Silva, Toure, Navas and at times Fernandinho all joining in. It is something, very minor point here and not a negative, we don't do on occasions as we put multiple passes together and the opponents get behind the ball.

No centre half wants someone running at them with the ball, plus a centre forward and two supporting players- always going to be on a loser. Unless of course your two fullbacks are positionally aware enough to realise the danger and tuck in narrow. and for those of you who recall I've been saying for over 2 years Johnson is not good enough for us to get top 4 and Cissokho has to fall into the same category.

Goode morning Eds and fellow reds. Very unlucky yesterday against the might of City. We're showing that we really can compete against the best.

Eds you mentioned that Arsenal have enquired about Salah, but at what level are they at with him please? I thought we were in prime position for him and still most sites claim that we have practically all ready done the deal for him?

How many do you think that we are looking at signing in January? We have a small squad as BR has said but I can't honestly see 3-5 new players in?

Hughes, Racitik, Alonso have all been linked as have many others. I'm just trying to piece together were we are at as regards to having a complete squad with a decent bench.

Any info would be appreciated Ed.

Happy belated Chrimbo to all

The other players I've asked about above is the genuine interest from us or mainly rumours?

Happy Belated Xmas Eds and fellow Reds!

Frustrating result against City despite an excellent game yesterday Liverpool played superbly at times, fast paced attacking and the relationship between Sterling & Suarez was exceptional. As for the refereeing and assistants they were extremely poor but we must not let that detract from the current spirit, confidence and togetherness we have in the squad at this present moment in time! It is encouraging and fantastic to finally be watching a young talented Liverpool team that are going in to big games with a 50% chance or more of taking three points from them and maintaining some consistency! Refs like Mason, Atkinson and Webb are not biased against Liverpool they are just poor referees and probably do favour other teams over Suarez if anyone simply because of his competitive and over zealous nature and desire to win, along with his past! I know Skrtel is frustrating and if officials are watching his shenanigans in the box then that will cost us points this season so he will have to beware, even still he is at least fighting for the LFC cause and giving his all unlike Johnson who I have defended in the past. He had an absolute shocker again yesterday and offered nothing to the team offensively whilst wasting possession, poor distribution and lacklustre positional sense! On his game he used to be a positive decent right back but not anymore and he will need to improve if we are going to push for a top four place this season! Coutinho is still improving to somewhere like the form earlier in the year and Sakho despite a mad ten minute spell is still better than most centre backs in the league and will only get better for me - he is a powerhouse! Cissokho needs more time he did alright yesterday and put across some decent crosses, while Lucas, Allen and Hendo were excellent against one of the best midfields in the division! Chelsea will be difficult on Sunday but the season doesn't rely on that result although a loss will put us back from the pack! Finally we as Liverpool fans should have huge optimism for the second half of the season as we have a better fixture list than most in that we would have already played most of our difficult away fixtures to City, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Everton and Newcastle and will be playing most of our Champions league completion at the Home of football "The Mighty Anfield" All the best to LFC fans and EDS for 2014 and Happy New Year!

Wanted to point out that after tomorrow's game we have played man city, Chelsea, arsenal, spurs, Everton, Newcastle and Swansea all away from home. The only real tough matches away second half of the season will be united and soton. Our home form this season has been fantastic so surely this will spur us on to secure top 4 or even the title.

Watched the game and have to say proud of our performance, still looked a bit frail defensively and had watching us defend set pieces. Just look vulnerable from them. Saying that had we been more clinical or the referee made basic decisions we could have easily gone in 2-0 or even 3-0/3-1 up. The first goal was great play and had coutinho finished the chance saurez laid for him it would have been an amazing piece of team play and one of the nicest goals I've seen in a while. But main points about it were we were great going forward with players stepping up their game so positive about the season. We'll get sturridge and stevie back plus new signings (hopefully Salah) which will give us depth to change games with our bench, which we lack.
But main point. Why was lee mason the referee in the first place? I know you could argue the offside wasn't his fault but throughout the game he was poor! For both teams; saurez should have had a pen via shirt pulling, skrtel may as well as just taken kompany's shirt every corner, lescott going through saurez without touching the ball isn't a foul, saurez was booked for attempting to get a ball over the top (despite making absolutely no contact whatsoever and having every right to go for it) Moses' booking didn't seem right and the free kick which led to their equalizer for me wasn't a foul. I honestly think I'd do better despite being no where near trained or even fit enough to keep up with play! Just don't see why for the biggest game on Boxing Day one of the top refs wasn't chosen? Everyone may disagree who the best ref is but no one would put mason in the top 3, so why put him in charge of such a massive game!? Also makes me laugh that he is one of the refs Mark Halsey said "Wasn't fit for purpose"

Believable0 Unbelievable0

27 Dec 2013 00:06:39
Glen Johnson was consistent again and a good performance from the rest of the squad nevertheless. We deserved more than two points.
yeah, we got screwed over by the refs but Ed, what's going to happen with Brendan? You can't just blame him for being a Manc so obviously this will cost hima few thousand quid.
Onto Chelsea, we need 3 points and this match is key if we cut out the mistakes and have better finishing.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I am sure the FA will fine him and give him a touchline ban, though Fergie has said far worse in the past and got nothing.}

26 Dec 2013 23:58:32
Sterling, 2 yards onside, whistle blows. is this reality?

Managers and players get interviewed and are asked about their wrong doings, at the very least referees should make a short written apology when they make decisions like that.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I have to say that if goal line technology has been introduced into the game then I am sure it would be possible to allow a fourth official to take a look at these incidents. The game could continue and it takes seconds to review the decision and the play can be pulled back if the official deems fit. I have seen some poor off side decisions that are real close, but yesterday it must have been 2 YARDS ONSIDE (that's being generous).
These decisions are costing teams points and in tern will cost managers there jobs.
As for the other decisions, yes Suarez should have been awarded a penalty BUT if we are being honest Skrtle could have given 2 maybe 3 away too.
Lets not get too hung up about it. There's more positives than negatives to take from the game.
Bring on Chelsea and the 2nd half of the season.

Just feel mugged by them, ok Mignolet is at fault for their second, but we should have been two nil up and he gifted them the free kick which led to the passage of play which they equalised. Honestly, seeing the words Lee Mason as the ref is as bad as Howard Webb.
